Jordan Smith, Oliver Wilson, even Ben Griffin... the last few weeks have given us some fantastic stories, in victory and defeat, from players who fought hard to achieve something which had at times seemed so far away.

For Griffin, who stood up for a post-round interview after throwing away the Bermuda Championship, the ultimate goal remains out of reach, and yet here was a player who little more than a year ago had been doing an office job and contemplating if professional golf was going to work out at all.

For Smith and Wilson, contrasting struggles – one seeking to fulfil his potential, the other to rebuild his career – ended in similarly emotional wins, both having failed to deliver on promises made to themselves: whatever you do, don't cry when you speak to Sky Sports afterwards.

It's these stories which give sport its beating heart, and thanks to Sky Sports' decision to broadcast this week's Challenge Tour Grand Final for the very first time, we'll get more of them in the coming days. All 45 players heading to Mallorca have guaranteed that they can tread this road again next year, but none of them wants to. The goal is to secure one of 20 DP World Tour cards.

Sky Bet's latest offer for Sporting Life readers

Returning to Club de Golf Alcanada, where Francesco Laporta triumphed in six-under in 2019, ought to ensure they each have to work hard for it. This course isn't long, but two of its par-fives stretch beyond 600 yards and only one of the other such holes is a penalty kick. The rest of Alcanada is all but sure to prove challenging providing there's some wind, and the forecast suggests we'll get it from Thursday afternoon well into the weekend.

Playing in the wind when you're under immense pressure is extremely difficult, in fact it's about as difficult as golf gets. Just ask Griffin. It also tends to favour those who've been around the block and back again, which is partly why the old man of the field, Matthew Baldwin, deserves his place towards the head of the market.

Baldwin though is 22nd on the Road to Mallorca standings, and it's hard to escape the fact that there's a divide in this field: those guaranteed or all but their cards on the big tour next year, and those either with a target on their backs, or on the outside looking in. Standings leader Jeremy Freigburghaus can focus solely on winning the event, as can JC Ritchie and a handful of others, and that's hugely beneficial.

Since David Drysdale won this from 45th in the standings back in 2005, just one other player has triumphed from outside the top 20, and that was two years later. We're therefore 15 years out from the last time a player ranked in Baldwin's position managed to secure their secondary goal for the week and lift the Grand Final trophy, and if that continues we can rule out six players trading at 33/1 or shorter.

In fact, it makes sense to creep further towards the top of the rankings when narrowing down the field. Seven of the last eight champions came from inside the top 10, the exception having been 11th, and these are the players who don't have to worry about what damage a bad week at the wrong time might do. It's a freedom which, come crunch time on Sunday, might be decisive.

World Cup guide

The best bet at the prices is the man in 10th, ROBIN SCIOT-SIEGRIST , who has been a model of consistency and can be rewarded for that in the same way that Justin Suh was in the Korn Ferry Tour's equivalent.

  • CLICK HERE to back Sciot-Siegrist with Sky Bet

Sciot-Siegrist of course doesn't carry Suh's potential but he has won at this level and threatened to on the DP World Tour, contending at 13th Beach when third. That's one of two top-10s and both came by the sea, the other in Mauritius at this time of year.

Coastal golf seems to suit the Parisian, because he was tied second here three years ago, too. That was akin to the dreaded fourth place in an Olympic final, as he would've earned promotion had he finished second on his own, only to see Sebastian Heisele scramble a closing par to hand the card to Sebastian Garcia-Rodriguez instead.

Sciot-Siegrist started that week ranked 37th and, interviewed after his second round, made clear he knew exactly what was required with just 15 cards available. Surely that explains an over-par back-nine on Sunday as the birdies dried up at a course he said he really liked, and he'll feel as though he has a score to settle.

This time around he has nothing to worry about and I do think Alcanada is a really nice fit. It ties in particularly well with Morgado and he's one of the few players in this field with form over there in Portugal, again demonstrating his effectiveness when courses need to be picked apart.

Four of his 14 career top-fives have come since July to underline the fact that this really has been the best season of his career and, free from the pressure which will weigh heavy on some rivals including a handful who carry greater potential, this solid yardstick can prove the one they all have to beat.

Further up the betting, Oscar Lengden would be my pick of those in need of a big week. He's contended at Morgado and boasts a progressive 20-17-15-10 record in this event, while the fact he's returned from injury this year might help him to see this as a free hit.

The same logic applies to SIMON FORSSTROM and I will include the Swede despite the fact he's down in 40th place, albeit he wouldn't have been recommended at anything under 40/1.

  • CLICK HERE to back Forsstrom with Sky Bet

At least Forsstrom can focus on winning as that's what he'll probably need to do, while I like the fact he's only played in 10 events, fewer than everyone in this field, having been on the Nordic Golf League until July.

Surely, qualifying for this was above his expectations and of all 25 players who are currently shy of the required mark, he's the one who should be delighted whatever happens.

The fact he's splitting Alfie Plant and Felix Mory, who've played 23 and 25 events respectively, tells you how well Forsstrom has played and he's been a regular on leaderboards, sitting inside the top 20 at halfway on seven occasions during this spell. Three top-10s is a good return and one of those came two starts ago before he again started well at Frilford Heath.

A former Challenge Tour winner, he also boasts some of the best Morgado form in the field with 17th and 22nd to his name there, so at 40s and upwards might just be able to do the unthinkable and win to earn DP World Tour membership for the first time in his career.

One man who's been there already is JENS DANTORP and he looks a rock-solid option from towards the top of the market.

  • CLICK HERE to back Dantorp with Sky Bet

Back-to-form when fourth in Oxfordshire last time, Dantorp will be hoping that's a portent to a huge week here as back in summer, he bagged five top-10s in six Challenge Tour starts and then made it seven in eight with two more on the DP World Tour.

All four top-10s at that higher level have been by the sea, two of them at Hillside and Fairmont St Andrews during the aforementioned stretch, and in two Challenge Tour starts in Spain this year he's been 54-hole leader the first time and then won the second – under tough conditions to boot.

Only four birdies all day on 18... Jens Dantorp was one of them 👊 #CazooClassic pic.twitter.com/eZQtaOOUu8 — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 23, 2022

He's not made much of an impact in this in the last two years but note his starting positions of 27th and 14th, either looking over his shoulder or straining to sneak inside the top 20. In 2016, he was a fast-finishing second when nothing less would've done, whereas a year earlier, when tied for the lead entering round four, he stalled to narrowly miss out on a card.

This time he's fifth, with the pressure well and truly off, and can focus on trying to end the year at the top of the Road to Mallorca standings. Prolific on the Nordic Golf League where he won the Order of Merit in 2011, he's well capable of winning his fourth Challenge Tour title and perhaps graduating at the top of the class.

Dantorp is preferred to JC Ritchie, who has played better in Spain than he has most places in Europe and has won the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit before. Second entering the final event, he can improve on last year's poor weekend when the pressure was well and truly on, but Dantorp's form is stronger right now and that swings the vote in his favour.

Others of note include the rest of a talented bunch of Frenchmen, with even rank outsider Pierre Pineau of some interest after a closing 63 last time and Jeong Weon Ko the bubble boy in 20th. However, under the anticipated conditions I expect we'll see experience play a big part in what's a welcome addition to the golfing TV schedule.

Former can't-miss-kid matteo manassero tastes victory on challenge tour 10 years after his biggest win, share this article.

challenge tour odds

What a long strange trip it has been for Matteo Manassero to return to the winner’s circle.

On the weekend of the 10-year anniversary of his BMW PGA Championship victory, the 30-year-old Italian claimed his maiden European Challenge Tour title at the Copenhagen Challenge.

Manassero, a four-time DP World Tour winner and the youngest player to win three times on the European circuit, shot a bogey-free final-round 66, which was good enough for a one-shot victory at 12 under par and his first title since winning the 2020 Toscana Open on the Alps Tour.

Born near Verona, he started playing golf at age three with a set of plastic clubs. At 16, he became the youngest winner of the British Amateur Championship in 2009 before taking the silver medal for low amateur in the 2009 British Open Championship. Manassero climbed as high as 25 th in the Official World Golf Ranking and seemed destined for greater things. But the short-hitting Italian chased distance gains and lost control of his swing and his game. He entered the week No. 575 in the world.

Manassero started the day six shots behind overnight leader Matias Honkala, but made a three-foot birdie putt on the 72 nd hole to secure his first DP World Tour-sanctioned victory since his heroics at Wentworth in 2013.

“There are a lot of emotions,” he said. “It has been 10 years now since I won on Tour so I guess May is a good time of the year for me.

“My wife never caddies for me but this week she was here, so it’s been the perfect week and as good as any other I’ve ever had.”

Manassero started strongly in the final round with back-to-back birdies from the second hole before tacking on another at the eighth. With Honkala dropping back and South African teenager Casey Jarvis also picking up shots, Manassero was in a three-way share of the lead. However, he rose to the top with birdies at the 14 th  and 15 th  before the clincher at 18 to be crowned champion at Royal Golf Club by one stroke ahead of Jarvis. Manassero enjoyed the moment after being lost in golf’s wilderness for a decade, a can’t-miss-kid who has been one of the biggest disappointments in the professional game.

“I’ve had a lot of down periods during those ten years but I’m still here and now I’m holding the trophy, which means I’ve done a lot of good things as well in that period of time,” he said. “In the past maybe I didn’t enjoy enough of the good times, but I definitely will now.

“I came into this week with doubts about my game and I wasn’t feeling great. This golf course isn’t a course that you can afford not to be feeling great but sometimes you grind, and it doesn’t happen and sometimes all of a sudden it clicks.

“Golf is strange and hard to understand at times, and probably we shouldn’t try too hard to understand it.”

Manassero improved to fifth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings up from 40 th  position, while Jarvis moves up to second from 15 th  place.

2023 Hero World Challenge odds: Tiger Woods is our long-shot in his big return

Tiger Woods is at the bottom of the 2023 Hero World Challenge betting odds, so we're picking him as our long shot to win in his return.

David Cannon/Getty Images

The official PGA Tour season may be over, but many of the stars in the game are teeing it up at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge this week, and we’re picking Tiger as our long-shot to win in his return to competition. Here’s our pick, the Hero World Challenge odds, betting favorites and everything else you need to know.

Hero World Challenge odds: Long-shot bet

This week’s event features only 20 players, and all are among the best in the game. Typically this would mean there are no long shots in the field.

Tiger Woods smiles at a 2022 Hero World Challenge press conference.

Tour Confidential: Tiger Woods’ game, TGL’s postponement, PIP results, golf deals

But with Woods making his big return to competition this week after many, many months off the course, he’s been installed at the bottom of the odds-to-win list at +5000.

That’s good enough to make him our long-shot pick of the week. Should Tiger pull off an unlikely win in his return to golf, you can turn a $10 bet into $500.

Hero World Challenge odds: The favorites

Leading the betting odds for the star-studded Hero World Challenge is Viktor Hovland , who has won the last two Hero events, at +400.

Close behind Hovland in second is Scottie Scheffler at +450, with Collin Morikawa and Max Homa tied at +750.

You can see the top 10 in Hero World Challenge betting odds as of Monday morning below, or head over to BetMGM to see the full list of odds and bets for this week.

2023 Hero World Challenge betting odds (Top 10 and ties)

Viktor Hovland (+400) Scottie Scheffler (+450) Collin Morikawa (+750) Max Homa (+750) Justin Thomas (+1400) Matt Fitzpatrick (+1600) Cameron Young (+2000) Rickie Fowler (+2000) Wyndham Clark (+2000) Jordan Spieth (+2200) Sam Burns (+2200) Tony Finau (+2200)

How last week’s long shot fared

At the RSM Classic, the final PGA Tour event of the 2022-23 season, we picked Adam Schenk at +6600 to pull off a long-shot win.

Though Schenk didn’t come through with a W, he did shoot a final-round 65 to secure a T19 finish, giving us another top-20 hit, our 14th of the season in the final tournament.

2024 GEICO 500: What you need to know

  • Penske Racing’s Ryan Blaney has taken checkers 3 times in 19 Cup starts with 8 top-10 finishes and a 14.5 AFP
  • RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski has burned up the track at Talladega, posting 6 wins, 10 top-5 finishes and 320 laps led in 30 Cup starts with a solid 15.9 AFP
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has posted a win with 6 top-5 finishes and 9 top-10 showings in 21 Cup starts with a 15.7 AFP
  • Hendrick’s Alex Bowman has had tremendous difficulty at Talladega in 16 Cup starts, posting just a single top-5 run with 4 top-10 finishes and a terrible 23.9 AFP
  • Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. has also struggled over the years at Talladega, managing just 3 top-5 finishes, 9 top-10 finishes and 95 laps led in 38 Cup starts with a 21.3 AFP
  • Hendrick’s Kyle Larson has posted a subpar 22.9 AFP in his 18 Cup starts with a single top-5 finish and 3 top-10 results
  • Alabama native Bubba Wallace has a victory at Talladega in 12 Cup starts, posting 91 laps led with 3 DNFs and a 20.0 AFP

2024 GEICO 500 – Expert pick

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:36 a.m. ET.

RYAN BLANEY (+900) is looking to become a back-to-back winner at Talladega for the 1st time since he took checkers in October 2019 and June 2020 in consecutive Talladega starts.

He has posted 3 wins, 6 top-5 finishes, 8 top-10 showings and 283 laps led in 19 Cup starts.

2024 GEICO 500 – Contender

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. (+ 2200 ) is worth a roll of the dice for the chance to multiply up by 22 times. The Olive Branch, Miss., native has picked up a win at ‘Dega before, earning checkers on May 7, 2017.

In 21 Cup starts, Stenhouse has a win, 6 top-5 finishes and 9 top-10 runs with 118 laps led, while turning in a 15.7 AFP.

2024 GEICO 500 – Props and matchbets

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. ( -115 ) over Michael McDowell (-115) in a matchbet is the way to go.

We covered Stenhouse’s numbers at Talladega above, but McDowell has struggled mightily over the years. The Front Row Motorsports driver, who will start from the pole on Sunday, has just 4 top-10 finishes with just 7 laps led in 26 career Cup starts at Talladega, while posting a horrific 26.0 AFP. Stenhouse should be a slam-dunk play.

RICKY STENHOUSE JR. TOP 10 FINISHING POSITION ( +140 ) at plus-money is still a strong prop play based on the information above.

In addition, CHASE ELLIOTT TOP-10 FINISHING POSITION (-110) is also a strong value based upon his historic averages at the track.

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard, scores: J.T. Poston leads with Masters star Ludvig Åberg in hunt after Round 1

Scottie scheffler is also in the mix but sitting six shots back after the first 18 holes on thursday.

RBC Heritage - Round One

In one of the stranger transitions this PGA Tour season, the RBC Heritage started on Thursday just four days after the final round of the Masters. It's a great field in a no-cut, big-money event, which is fun for fans. However, it felt odd to watch golfers play a regular PGA Tour stop so quickly after the first major championship of the year.

So, it was no surprise to see some of the bigger stars struggle a bit and some lesser names rise to the top of the leaderboard. One of those names is J.T. Poston, who shot a round-of-the-day 8-under 63. He's trailed by, well, everybody else in the field at the $20 million event at Hilton Head.

Let's take a look at his round as well as those on the chase going into Round 2 on Friday.

1. J.T. Poston (-8)

Poston was second in the field in putting on Thursday, which is why he's leading. But he also hit it well, which has not been the case. After putting together five top 20s in six starts on the West Coast, Poston has no top 20s in four starts since heading east.

He credited better ball-striking (he was top 15 in that category on Thursday), but also gave a shout out to his wife for allowing him to get a little sleep with their newborn on the road.

"We've got a two-bedroom condo," explained Poston. "My mom is staying with us. We've got her in her little setup. Last night my wife was great; she got up in the middle of the night a couple times when she was ready to eat or being fussy and let me sleep, so maybe we'll keep doing that."

Other contenders

T2. Collin Morikawa, Seamus Power (-6) T4. Austin Eckroat, Mackenzie Hughes, Sahith Theegala, Patrick Rodgers, Ludvig Aberg, Sepp Straka (-5)

Åberg has the look you want to see from a young potential star going into this event off a solo second at the Masters. He's a flusher's flusher, hit 13 of 14 fairways on Thursday with that perfect swing of his and cruised to a 66 with absolutely nothing on or around the greens.

Terrifying stuff.

"My focus shifted right when I got here," said Åberg. "We were trying to make sure that last week was last week and this week was this week. But, yeah, obviously last week is still something I look back on with a smile. But, yeah, my focus is here this week, and hopefully we'll be able to keep up good golf.

"I'd like to think that I'm young and I'll be able to handle it," he added about playing three consecutive weeks. "But, yes, I think I'll crash for a few days next week when I'm not playing. But I'm looking forward to the rest of the week."

Scottie ... again?

Scottie Scheffler has lost to one golfer since March 1 -- that was Stephan Jager at the Houston Open a few weeks ago. He's defeated ... everyone else he's played, including wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Players Championship and, of course, last week's Masters. Could that continue this week? He's off to a decent start at 2 under that included a double bogey.

It's his 36th consecutive round at or under par to start 2024.

"It would have felt better if I got off to a better start," said Scheffler, who made double at the third hole after botching a bunker shot and failing to get up and down. "I tried to give myself a little bit of grace there, but I got pretty frustrated towards the middle of the round because I was playing good, felt like I was hitting good putts and my speed was maybe a touch off.

"I shanked the bunker shot on 3. I shank it a decent amount, but never in competition ... I tried to kind of give myself a little bit of grace there. It clearly was just a mental lapse and I wasn't quite into it yet. Tried to give myself a little bit of time. I had a much better back nine. Hit a lot of really good shots. Hit some nice putts, too. Looking forward to the rest of the week."

Scheffler looked the way anyone would look after winning the Masters: physically and emotionally exhausted.

"I think I was maybe too settled down to start the day. I wasn't quite into the competition. I think maybe it was a bit of fatigue, whatever it was. But I felt like I was still kind of getting adjusted to the golf course."

Scheffler is not in a great position for a fourth win in five starts because of when this tournament lands on the schedule. Beating the best players in the world in a given week is difficult enough as it is. Doing so after the emotional toll of winning a Masters is monumental. If anyone can do it, it's him. But there were definitely some mistakes in there early for Scheffler that we are unaccustomed to seeing.

Those mistakes will be cleaned up eventually, and Scheffler will play his way into the tournament. The question for him after Round 1 is whether falling outside the top 20 after the first day will prohibit him from yet another victory.

2024 RBC Heritage updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Collin Morikawa: 6-1
  • J.T. Poston: 7-1
  • Ludvig Aberg: 7-1
  • Scottie Scheffler: 10-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 11-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 12-1

I'm in on Åberg getting a victory this week, and I like those 7-1 odds. Which means Scheffler is definitely going to shoot 64 on Friday and surge into the lead. Guys who hit it great and you should keep an eye on include Cameron Young (20-1) and Russell Henley (28-1).
