Really excellent cruise and incredible views. Staff all friendly and very knowledgeable, especially our bus driver, Ryan, across from Queenstown who made sure the journey was as good as the cruise traveller1694, Via TripAdvisor
Such a beautiful trip. Easy pickup. So glad I went with RealNZ. It seemed to be the only bus with a glass roof, which was definitely needed to appreciate the soaring views of glaciers and mountains along the way. Driver Nathan had great commentary, learnt a lot along the way. Appreciated the photo stops and comfort stops. Milford Sound cruise was seamless, and breathtaking. 100% recommend. tona0, Via TripAdvisor
This trip was incredible, if you are visiting Queenstown/Te Anau it is an absolute bucket list trip!! The pickup was really easy - RealNZ sent a taxi to pick us up from our hotel in Queenstown, which included in the price. Our driver Paulie absolutely made the trip - he provided insightful and funny commentary for almost 6 hours non-stop on the way to Milford Sound and had such detailed knowledge of the flora and fauna in the region. The bus has windowed ceilings, so you can see a very wide angle view, which gives an incredible view of the mountains for the entire drive. The bus also stops several times on the way, including in Te Anau (if coming from Queenstown), and several points in Fiordland, to take in the view and get some picture. The boat tour is also incredible - I would recommend bringing your own lunch rather than getting the included lunch, and spending as much time as possible on one of the viewing decks! The whole experience was incredibly well planned, with almost no effort on our end, and completely seamless. Again, if you are in Queenstown or Te Anau, this is an absolute must!! soumyak2012, via TripAdvisor
Our tour guide, Nathan, was just excellent! He literally narrated non-stop for the entire trip to Milford Sound, filled us in with all the interesting and worthy sights/things to take note. Obviously he wouldn't have done it without good knowledge of what is going on, not to mention on all the wonderful pit stops he made. Wonderful trip! Make sure you get Nathan of RealNZ. pengyeww, Via TripAdvisor
Amazing experience! The milford sound is a stunning area! An absolute must do when visiting New Zealand! Hannah S, Via TripAdvisor
Our day trip coach driver/tour guide Nathan was a wealth of knowledge and loads of fun to be with our entire 10hrs Milford Sounds day trip! Super friendly, very passionate with sharing his knowledge and very attentive towards us travelers. We felt very safe, and came back from our trip full of knowledge of the entire route heading to and from Queenstown to Milford Sounds! Great awesome experience on the RealNZ cruise, the boat was very large, plenty of space for people to take pics and nice sparkly clean toilets. Awesome experience getting up and close to the waterfalls but skipper was amazing to get us close enough without drenching us passengers! Can't recommend RealNZ enough! Connector141991323 Via TripAdvisor
Our super bus driver/guide was SO right that the heavy rain we were having would make our cruise on Milford Sound an EPIC trip! The combination of rain and Milford Sound, along with hanging out on the bow of the Milford Haven and getting drenched, made for an awesome experience and life-long memory! If you have any flexibility in your Milford Sound tour dates, shoot for a rainy day. And get outside! And to reiterate, our Real NZ bus driver/guide provided wonderful commentary while providing a comfortable and safe ride. Its a long day from Queenstown, but his commentary and music made for a great trip. Thank you! Y7756QJmikek, Via TripAdvisor

How long does the Milford Sound cruise last?

Milford Sound cruises vary in duration, typically lasting between 1.5 to 2 hours. The exact length depends on factors such as your chosen vessel, weather, wildlife encounters, and overall conditions. During these scenic cruises, you'll navigate the entire length of the stunning fiord. Departing from the Visitor Terminal, the cruise takes you to the Tasman Sea, offering breathtaking views of mountains, waterfalls, and captivating landscapes before returning to the terminal. Explore our fleet to see the average cruising time of each vessel.

What's the difference between the Milford Sound cruise options?

The main differences between our Milford Sound cruise options are the size and layout of each vessel, their food offerings, departure times, and cruise length. Explore our fleet or take this 2-minute quiz to see which vessel floats your boat!

Where does the Milford Sound cruise go?

The Milford Sound cruise sets off from the Visitor Terminal and travels up one side of the fiord out to the Tasman Sea, before returning to the Terminal along the other side. This is to make sure you don’t miss out on any spectacular waterfalls, mountain views, and wildlife.

Where does the Milford Sound cruise leave from?

The Milford Sound cruise sets off from the Milford Terminal , located at the centre of Milford Sound’s small centre. The address is Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, Milford Sound 9679, and the phone number is +64 3 249 6000 . If you’re getting a coach and cruise with RealNZ, we’ll have arranged a coach pickup or meeting location with you prior to travel.

How do I get to Milford Sound for my cruise?

You get to Milford Sound via the single Milford Road that runs from Te Anau straight through to Milford Sound, going through the Fiordland National Park. You can travel to Milford Sound by driving yourself, or you can opt to sit back, relax and catch our comfortable and spacious coaches. Our professional drivers will take you there, pausing at all the important stop-off points so you can take in all the incredible viewpoints. Read more on how to get to Milford Sound .

Will I see wildlife on the Milford Sound cruise?

Going on a Milford Sound cruise gives you the unique opportunity to encounter native wildlife living in this remote paradise. There might be playful Keas, Fiordland crested penguins, chatty dolphins, graceful albatross, and relaxed NZ fur seals. However, it's essential to appreciate that these creatures are wild, often unpredictable, and some are facing decline. While knowledgeable nature guides will search for wildlife, the animals’ spontaneity means sightings are not guaranteed. A journey into Milford Sound offers a chance to connect with the natural world, and each sighting becomes a testament to the untamed beauty of this incredible environment.

Is the Milford Sound cruise child-friendly?

The Milford Sound cruise is extremely child-friendly, offering an unforgettable experience for your little ones. While exploring the vessel, it's important to be cautious due to potential hazards like steps and railings. Ensuring your children's safety is paramount. Kids will love the cruise, especially as it brings them up close to magnificent waterfalls and offers opportunities to spot fascinating wildlife.

To make the most of the journey, pack essentials for a comfortable day trip, including waterproof layers, a sun hat, and ample food and water. Additionally, bring along games to keep them entertained during travel.

What is the Milford Sound cruise cancellation policy?

Our Milford Sound cruise has a 24-hour cancellation policy for bookings made directly with RealNZ. Full refunds will be given in the event of a cancellation, and amendments can be made to your booking when RealNZ receives notification at least 24 hours prior (NZ time) to your departure time. This does not account for Milford Sound Overnight Cruises, which asks for 14 days' notice prior to departure.

Does the Milford Sound coach make any scenic stops?

The Milford Sound coach makes multiple stops along the way to Milford Sound so you can take in the incredible views and also pause for amenities like restrooms and snacks. From Queenstown, you’ll stop in Te Anau for a restroom break, snacks, and coffee, before heading into the Fiordland National Park. Here, you’ll stop at Mirror Lakes to take in the incredible reflection of the mountains in the still waters. You’ll also stop further along the road in the Eglington Valley to absorb the immensity of the Fiordland mountains. Later, you might stop at another restroom before travelling on to Monkey Creek, the best spot to see the mischievous Keas in action. A short stop might be made at the entrance to the Homer Tunnel while you’re waiting to enter before making your way into the centre of Milford Sound.

Can I bring my luggage on the coach?

There is limited luggage space on the coach to Milford Sound. If needed, we can store larger luggage in the undercarriage of the coach while you’re on the cruise and only if you’ll be returning on the same coach. However, there’s no space in the coach seating area for large bags.

Where does the coach pick up from?

In Queenstown, the coach will pick you up from our RealNZ Visitor Centre at 88 Beach Street, Queenstown, 9300. Our coaches can make pick-ups from select accommodations, contact us at +64 3 249 6000 if you’d like to enquire or make a pickup request. Check your booking confirmation email to see if you have already arranged a pickup.

We are also able to pick up guests from Te Anau, from the RealNZ Visitor Centre , 85 Lakefront Drive, Te Anau 9640. Accommodation pickups in Te Anau are not available.

Do I need to bring a car seat for my child on the coach?

Car seats are not mandatory on our coaches and we do not have them available for hire. If you want to bring a car seat for your child on the coach, you are more than welcome but you must provide your own.

How long does the coach take?

The coach to Milford Sound takes between 4-5 hours from Queenstown and between 2-3 from Te Anau. These times includes stops in Te Anau, and along the Milford Road for photos, scenery, and wildlife. The journey back is slightly faster, as we make fewer stops. Sit back, relax and watch the magnificent views roll by on our coach.

Is there parking available in Milford Sound?

Both paid and free parking are available in Milford Sound. The main car park in Milford Sound is the closest to the Visitor Terminal and is clearly signposted as you enter the small village centre. It is only a 5 - 10-minute walk along a beautiful path with views of the fiord and costs an hourly rate of $10. The free parking is slightly further away from the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, about a 25-minute stroll along a scenic forested pathway and is located at Deepwater Basin Road. You should allow 45 minutes to 1 hour to park your vehicle and transfer to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, where you should check-in for your cruise 20 minutes prior to departure.

Are cruises wheelchair accessible/safe for impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, our vessels all have at least one sea sill that the guests will need to navigate. None have fully accessible bathrooms on board. However, there are accessible bathrooms at the Milford terminal. Below are the vessel descriptions based on accessibility:

The Sovereign: Our most accessible, though guests still need to be able to navigate a sea-sill, and it can’t accommodate electric wheelchairs due to turnaround space.

Milford Haven: Guests need to navigate a sea-sill and will be confined to the café level; there is an outdoor viewing deck on the same level, which can be accessed via a sea-sill but turning in a wheelchair can be tight.

Milford Mariner: Not recommended for wheelchair users due to steep, narrow stairs to the main viewing deck and high sea-sills.

The Sinbad: Semi-accessible bathroom on board but accessed over high sea-sills, no access to the top deck.

Do you cater to dietary requirements on the cruises?

We can cater to dietary requirements on the cruises. Please let us know what requirements you have when you make your booking, and we can make sure there are options for you.

Will I get cold or wet on the Milford Sound cruise?

Milford Sound can be a cold and wet place, but that doesn’t mean you need to be! Pack for most weather outcomes, like a rain jacket, a warm layer, sunscreen, and a sunhat, and you’ll be comfortable for whatever the weather brings.

Will the cruise go ahead in bad weather?

Aside from road closure due to snow, the Milford Sound cruise is likely to go ahead in most weather. Very strong wind is usually the only weather to cause cancellations, but Milford Sound is typically sheltered from wind and rough tides. In Milford Sound, we welcome heavy rain, as it brings out the hundreds of waterfalls.

New Zealand by Cruise Ship: A Guide

car cruise nz

Summer is here, and the cruise ship season, predicted to be New Zealand’s biggest ever, has begun. Between November 1st and April 30th 33 ships (up from 28 ships last summer) will make as many as 600 stops in ports all around the country. Another biggest ever is the arrival before Christmas of the Ovation of the Seas , the newest leviathan from Royal Caribbean and the largest mega-liner to sail kiwi waters at a stonking 348m (1142′) long. She arrived in Doubtful, Dusky and Milford Sounds on December 21st, wallowed into Port Chalmers the next day, then turned north on a typical cruise route which included stops at Picton, Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland .

If you are coming to NZ by ship this season there’s quite a lot to take in on your brief stopovers, and to make the most of your holiday you need to be prepared. You can of course:

  • Remain aboard the ship, suspiciously surveying the harbour and waterfront from the safety of an air conditioned lounge.
  • Go for a wander around the local shops or cafes, then meander back to the ship.
  • Board a bus and get a guided tour, there are many to choose from.

But if you really want to explore, on your own terms and schedule, you should be considering a rental car. NZ Rent a Car can meet you at many of the ports regularly visited by cruise ships, and within minutes you can be on the road, away from the herds of tourists queuing for souvenirs and taking photos of the ship. If you do decide to hire a car and plan your own personal tour our key piece of advice is to plan your day trip – tours, activities, and for that matter rental cars, can be booked out months in advance. Also, allow time: The ship may dock at 7am but there can be delays before you will be permitted to clear customs, which takes more time. Allow for traffic which may affect your route, especially if you are traveling in or out of major cities on weekdays. Check Google maps for driving time estimates, and consider opting for a GPS with your car to save navigation delays.

Here is our round up of local must-sees, must-do’s, and must-knows as recommended by our branch staff!

Things to do in Dunedin

Dunedin is a common stop for cruise ships, although in reality they don’t go up the Victoria Channel, the narrow dredged passage through Otago Harbour. Instead the ship docks at Port Chalmers and passengers make their way into nearby Dunedin in rental cars and tour buses. Here’s what people come to see in Dunedin:

baldwin-street

Cadbury Chocolate Factory   Take a tour of Cadbury World, grab a few kiwi-made chocolate souvenirs, and kid yourself that you’ll save them for the nieces and nephews and won’t scoff them during the voyage home.

Moeraki Boulders   On the windswept Otago coast, the tiny fishing village of Moeraki has a rich Maori, whaling and sealing history. These days people flock to see the Moeraki boulders, clusters of perfectly formed geological eggs. The town is about an hour’s drive from Port Chalmers, and the rocks are a 45 minute walk from there, either on the beach or along the Millennium Walkway. It is also common to see yellow-eyed and blue penguins, seabirds, and even seals along the coast.

Olveston House Built at the dawn of the 20th century, this spectacular 35 room residence represents the pinnacle of Edwardian opulence and elegance. From the grand exterior designed by Sir Ernest George, to the collections of furniture, art and ceramics housed within, Olveston is breathtaking.

For more ideas see our post 5 Must Do’s in Dunedin  and our older piece on Port Chalmers  to read about the critical role this port played in Kiwi history.

Things to do in Picton

Picton is a picturesque harbour town cradled in Queen Charlotte Sound. It’s also a major transport hub, being the South Island terminal for the inter-island ferries, where cars head south on SH1, and trains such as the Coastal Pacific snake down the eastern seaboard towards Christchurch and Dunedin. There is much to enjoy around the Marlborough region too, as the idyllic, sheltered Sounds are home to seals, dolphins and other marine celebrities, and the wineries that the district is famous for.

Queen Charlotte Drive is a 34km minor road from Picton to Havelock rated highly for its scenery, in fact it is part of a drive promoted as the Treasured Pathway, which continues on through Nelson, Richmond, and around the long parabolic perfection of Golden Bay. Cruise ship visitors won’t get that far, but Queen Charlotte Drive is feast enough. The road curls through the forested hills and dips down to skirt past beaches, so allow time for lots of photo stops, a stroll or two, or maybe a picnic.

vineyard

Vineyards Galore Marlborough is NZ’s premier wine region, and if you have the slightest interest in the nectar of the grape you may not know where to start. Look up your favourite winery, or consult this Wine Trail Map to plot your day out.

Karaka Point Walk There are a few good walks in the neighbourhood which you may like to tackle, but Karaka Point is a short one – just 10 minutes each way. The track takes you to the remnants of an old Maori Pa (fort), and some of their terraced ground is still apparent. You get a good view of Queen Charlotte Sound (as did the Maori lookouts), and there are paths down to beaches which can be walked at low tide. This walk is about 8km from Picton, and directions are simple: grab a picnic lunch in town and take Waikawa Rd until it becomes Port Underwood Rd. Park at the idyllic waterfront rest area, the walk begins from there.

Blenheim Riverside Railway  Barely 20 minutes drive from Picton is Blenheim, a popular day trip for cruise ship visitors. As well as the usual bevy of vineyards there is an adorable miniature train which runs from the CBD and parallels Taylor River. Sadly it is volunteer operated, so it opens only two Sundays a month.

Mailboat Cruises If the days at sea have only whet your appetite for… more days at sea, the local mailboat invites you along for a ride. Learn some local history, meet some local characters, and enjoy a more intimate view of Queen Charlotte Sound and photogenic spots like Ship Cove. See our blog post for more info.

Things to do in Napier

website_article_header_image_-_napier_1

In 1931 Napier was devastated by a massive earthquake, the worst natural disaster in New Zealand history. From the rubble rose a new Napier, the whole central city being simultaneously rebuilt in a rhapsody of Art Deco, and it is now regarded as one of the two best preserved Art Deco towns in the world, alongside South Beach, Miami.  This draws thousands of tourists to Napier every year, and the city hosts the highly successful Art Deco Weekend each summer. Watch out for this year’s event on February 15 – 19.

Wineries  The Hawkes Bay region is famous for its vineyards – Mission Estate , Church Road , and Craggy Range are probably the best known, but there are dozens to choose from. Do your own homework or just ask Jonathan at our Napier branch for his recommendations!

Cape Kidnappers  A mere 22km from Napier is Cape Kidnappers, a breeding ground for 3 – 6000 pairs of Australasian Gannets. Cars can go no further than the end of Clifton Rd, but from there tour operators such as Gannet Safaris , and  Gannet Beach Adventures  take over, giving you an up-close encounter with amazing coastal scenery and beaches carpeted with nesting seabirds. These tours are a treat but are immensely popular and need to be booked in advance!

Havelock North  Known locally as simply “The Village”, this modest town punches well above its weight when it comes to boutique bars, cafes, shopping and scenery. Take the road up to TeMata Peak’s 400m high lookout, where on a clear day you can see Napier and Mt Ruapehu.

White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve  Half an hour north of Napier is a superb Kahikatea (white pine) forest, where you can take a short, easy bush walk (one is even suitable for wheelchairs). As well as pine and Nikau palms, keep an eye out for native birds including Tui, pigeons, fantails, bellbirds, silvereyes and  grey warblers.

Things to do in Tauranga

Mount Maunganui New Zealand

Tauranga is without a doubt New Zealand’s fastest growing city. Its port is the busiest in the country, and the neighbouring suburbs of Papamoa and Mount Maunganui are renown for their white sand beaches, cafes and restaurants. Activities such as dolphin watching tours are popular as the sheltered harbour has an abundance of marine life. Visitors who choose to stay local can find plenty to do . Often, though, the port is seen as a gateway to the tourist meccas of Rotorua and Matamata, according to our Tauranga branch staff, as most of their ex-ship hirers go to:

Te Puia Thermal Reserve   Rotorua is a temptation once you’re in a rental car, as it is only an hour’s drive from Tauranga city on SH36. Rotorua is famous for its odour (don’t worry, you stop noticing it after a few minutes!) and its thermal geysers. Te Puia features more than 500 of these springs, including  Pohutu  which erupts up to 20 times a day, blasting steam and water 30m high. Te Puia is also home to the National Carving School and the National Weaving School, where you can see traditional Māori woodcarvers and weavers at work, plus a carved Maori meeting house, a cafe, galleries, a kiwi bird reserve, and inevitably, a gift shop. Ninety minute tours depart hourly from 9am, and 45-minute cultural performances start at 10.15am, 12.15pm and 3.15pm.

Hell’s Gate   If seeing the mud pools isn’t enough for you, you can visit this thermal spa facility and bathe in the stuff. The mud spa is thought to have therapeutic properties, and you can cap it off with a massage or a sulphur spa. For the non-mudbath inclined, check out the bush walks, the Kakahi Hot Falls, various pools and eruptions, or carve yourself a traditional-style souvenir. See their website to book a package that suits your tastes.

Skyline Gondolas   Along with its sister operation in Queenstown, this Rotorua attraction offers a bird’s-eye view of Rotorua in weather-proof 8 seat gondolas, rather like a lateral Ferris wheel. Other on-site attractions include such adrenalin-inducing activities as luge, ziplines, and a skyswing, and you can lunch at the Stratosfare Restaurant.

Hobbiton   A recreation of some of the movie sets used in Sir Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, and in some cases the actual sets, this attraction used 12 acres of pastoral Waikato farmland to represent Tolkein’s Middle Earth. Guides are reported to be entertaining and full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and you can finish your tour with an ale at the Dragon Inn. You’ll find it in Matamata, the tiny rural town that became one of the world’s great tourist destinations. A mere 40 minutes drive from Tauranga, Hobbiton is immensely popular and tours must be booked in advance.

 Things to do in Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, so many will seek out the boutique shops of Parnell, Newmarket and Ponsonby. Some will climb Mt Eden or Mt Victoria for panoramic views of the city and harbour. Some will bungy off the Sky Tower. But Auckland’s defining features are it’s two coastlines with their conflicting personalities. Built between the Manukau Harbour to the west, and the Waitemata to the east, each corner of this sprawling metropolis has its own character and texture.

Waitaks

East Coast Beaches As little as 20km away from the tumultuous west coast, the eastern shore’s temperament is a world apart. White sands, sheltered waters, and urban conveniences are the hallmarks of the Waitemata beaches. A stones throw from the city is Mission Bay and St Heliers beaches, the North Shore has Takapuna beach , Browns Bay , Long Bay Regional Park , and just north of Auckland is Orewa beach and its cafe-lined highway. There are too many to name, the whole seaboard is a treasure.

Kumeu Wineries If you’re keen on wine tours or wine tasting, this north-western outpost has the goods. Take SH16 from the city and watch for the Kumeu exit – on a clear day you should be there in under 25 minutes.

Matakana Head north on SH1 to reach Matakana, about an hour north of Auckland. 20 years ago Matakana boasted little more than a petrol station and a pub. It has grown beyond recognition thanks to the success of its weekly  Farmers Markets , exceptional local vineyards and cafes, and proximity to beaches and larger towns such as Warkworth. Now they even have a cinema… The road north has tolls, let your rental car operator know if you plan to head north and they can pre-pay this for you.

Hobbiton  (see Tauranga) is another popular choice from Auckland. Of course, if you’re stopping at Tauranga it makes sense to do it from there, but if you’re not and Hobbiton is on your bucket list allow for a two hour drive each way.

Cruise ships that visit New Zealand

Cruising in the picture-perfect Marlborough Sounds

Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough

By Rob Suisted

Cruise to New Zealand aboard one of the many ships that sail to and around New Zealand, each offering a unique experience.

The majority of cruise lines visit New Zealand during the October – April summer cruise season. A shorter winter cruise season also runs from April – July. Most of the world's major cruise companies offer cruise services to New Zealand. In a typical year, more than 25 different ships visit New Zealand's coast. Cruises between Australia and New Zealand offer the opportunity to travel the length of both North and South Islands. Most depart from Auckland in New Zealand, or Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane in Australia. Typically they visit New Zealand destinations including the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Fiordland. The Marlborough Sounds and Stewart Island are also popular ports of call.

Round the world

Round the world cruises visit New Zealand from all over the globe. These cruises can take as long as 150 nights, with some liners spending two weeks or more travelling the length of New Zealand and others spending shorter periods visiting just one or two ports. Some shorter ‘round the world cruises’ visit just a few countries – the USA, Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, for example. Round the world cruises are often sold in sections, for those passengers who don’t want to take the entire trip.

Expedition cruises mix visits to large ports with scenic visits to less-frequented locations that many large cruise liners do not visit. Some expedition cruises visit New Zealand’s South Island on the way to sub-Antarctic islands, while others visit smaller New Zealand locations, such as Stewart Island or Kaikoura.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

  • Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • Everest Lodge to Lodge

Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

In Maori, its name means "land of the long white cloud". There could be no more poetic a description for this country with peaks stretching up into the sky, water infiltrating as lakes, fiords, rivers and towering waterfalls, and a culture that is as sophisticated as it is complex. New Zealand attracts travellers and reignites their taste for adventure and passion for discovery.

Must-Sees - New Zealand

Maori traditions, a vibrant capital, majestic fiords, geothermal phenomena... New Zealand has a mix of culture and nature that makes travelling to the land of the kiwis a unique experience. Here are some places you must visit if you want to take full advantage of this adventure .

Learn about Maori culture - North Island

Learn about Maori culture - North Island

Maori culture has contributed hugely to New Zealand's reputation abroad. Indeed, it is fascinating. However, there is much more to it than the famous haka, including delicate art and unique mythology. In Wellington, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (meaning "our place") contains collections of items, clothes, photographs and art tracing the country's history in a fun way. A visit here is full of fascinating discoveries and should be combined with watching a Maori dance performance.

Gauge Wellington's pulse - North Island

Gauge Wellington's pulse - North Island

Wellington is known as the coolest little capital in the world! Located in the very south of North Island, New Zealand's capital has a unique charm and atmosphere. Wellington gives off a contagious energy, driven by its locals, flurry of culture and many cafes and restaurants, like Cuba Street with its bohemian feel. The famous cable car (a red funicular with a vintage look) takes visitors 120 metres up into the hills to enjoy views over the city. It is next to a botanic garden : a natural and peaceful haven to stroll around. Covering more than 25 hectares, exotic forests sit alongside features including the superb Lady Norwood Rose Garden containing multi-award winning flowers.

Sail through the fiords - South Island

Sail through the fiords - South Island

The further south you go, the more it feels like you're on an adventure. The marvellous Fiordland National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 and is home to incredible scenery with lakes, rivers, rainforests and fiords. Each fiord has a surprise up its sleeve when you sail through it, like Marlborough Sound , where the water is turquoise. The vertical waterfalls, cliffs and peaks around Milford Sound are vertigo-inducing. With its three branches and 421 metre depth in places, Doubtful Sound is one of the biggest fiords in New Zealand. It provides an opportunity to see remarkable wildlife including the rare native Fiordland penguin.

Stretch your legs on an iconic walk - South Island

Stretch your legs on an iconic walk - South Island

From the charming coastal town of Picton on North Island, you can take a boat to one of New Zealand's best-known hiking trails: the Queen Charlotte Track . 70 kilometres long, it is divided into stages, allowing travellers to complete short walks. Plant enthusiasts will enjoy the huge colonies of tree ferns, manukas and beech trees. However, the Track is really famous for the views it offers during hikes: there are breathtaking panoramas of the coast and its various bays.

Visit the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal site - North Island

Visit the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal site - North Island

Head to the very north of North Island. Located 90 minutes in the car from Tauranga, Rotorua is a little paradise for those who enjoy unusual landscapes. Here, you find Wai-O-Tapu , which means "sacred waters". Several paths allow visitors to explore this area created by thousands of years of volcanic activity . Fumaroles, craters, hot and cold water sources and the famous " champagne pool " renowned for its size and green and ochre shades all contribute to an almost supernatural panorama. Nearby, the Pohutu Geyser (meaning "huge spurt" or "explosion") puts on no less of a show!

Dos. New Zealanders are always polite and welcoming to visitors. They expect some basic etiquette and a friendly attitude in return.

Don'ts. Maori sites are considered sacred. Listen to your guide's advice about how to behave at different landmarks and make sure to ask permission before taking photos.

Unique features

In August 2019, a team of scientists announced that they had identified the fossil of a giant penguin on New Zealand's South Island. The animal lived 66 to 56 million years ago, was 1.6 metres tall and weighed 80 kilos. This made it 40 centimetres taller and 4 times heavier than today's penguins. The country was already known for having been home to one of the biggest birds to have ever existed. The moa, which became extinct at the end of the 18th century, could reach 3.6 m tall and weigh 200 kilos.

Essential phrases

Although English is mostly spoken (with a strong accent), some Maori words and expressions slip into everyday phrases. Here are some.

Hello / Good evening: Kia ora Goodbye, see you soon: Ka kite ano Welcome: Haere mai How are you?: Kei te pehea koe? (address to a person) My name is...

car cruise nz

Hangi is more than a dish: it's a traditional Maori cooking technique where a hole is dug in the ground, then hot volcanic rocks are put at the bottom. Next, wire baskets containing the food (pork, chicken, mutton or lamb, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, onions, etc.) are inserted. A low heat is used for cooking.

Myths and legends

Maori has a rich mythology. Of all the legends told, the creation story is one of the best-known. In the beginning there was Rangi-nui (the Sky), who joined together with Papa-tuanuku (the Earth). Their constant embrace plunged the world into darkness. Fed up with the lack of light, their children decided to separate them. Pushing with all his might, Tane-mahuta (the guardian of the forest and the birds) managed to part them. In doing so, he injured his mother. Blood poured onto the Earth for the first time, dyeing New Zealand's soil red. This is why all Maori sites are ochre. Sad to no longer be alongside his wife, the Sky began to cry and rain fell for the first time, filling up the oceans.

In the spotlight

Kiwi birds are so symbolic of New Zealand that New Zealanders are called "kiwis". These birds are one of the species on the island that are especially endangered. Being unable to fly, kiwi populations have decreased sharply in recent years. The government has launched a plan to increase their numbers from 70,000 to 100,000 by 2030. Measures include extending the protected areas where they live, managing predators better and furthering knowledge about the five kiwi species.

Books. Finding oneself, understanding the world and humans... In Au pays du long nuage blanc (In the Land of the Long White Cloud) , Charles Juliet publishes the diary he kept for five months in Wellington. He tells of meeting other artists, gives his impressions of this bustling city and legendary country and knocks together some poems. This is an intimate way to immerse yourself in New Zealand, whose Maori name, Aotearoa, means "land of the long white cloud".

Music. Maori music is mostly vocal and accompanied by percussion that provides the beat for the dances that go with it. There are songs for all occasions: welcome songs, healing songs and ritual songs. The haka is a challenge or war chant danced with or without weapons.

Film. There is no better way to explore New Zealand landscapes from a new perspective than watching the Lord of the Rings films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's books. They were filmed in some 45 locations on North and South Islands: Matamata, Mount Ngauruhoe, Tawhai Falls, Mount Victoria, Kawarau River, etc.

“We hired a car from Rite Price Car Rentals while on a cruise. A shuttle van was waiting for us as we disembarked and took us the short distance to the car rental office. Everything was very well organised and we were quickly on our way. The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave us some good advice on places to see. At the end of the day, we were shuttled back to the ship. We would recommend using this company.”

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

car cruise nz

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Hawke’s Bay serial burglar jailed for three years, two months after victim tracked her on GPS

A “recidivist spree burglar” was found by one of her victims using a GPS fob attached to a set of keys she had stolen.

Layna Brown, 35, committed at least 11 burglaries over the course of a year to feed her addictions, stealing anything from bank cards to a brand new electric bike, still in its packaging.

Now she is going to jail after a quick-thinking victim went looking for her using his phone to zero in on the location-finding device on a set of keys she had taken from his car.

Dayna Brown's victim used a GPS key fob to track her to Joll Road in Havelock North. Image / Google Maps

Brown appeared in the Hastings District Court on 11 charges of burglary and a raft of other offences, including possessing utensils for methamphetamine and cannabis.

The burglaries, to which she pleaded guilty, spanned nearly a year from October 2022 and involved both commercial and residential properties around Hastings and Napier .

Some of the offending occurred after she absconded from electronically monitored bail .

Judge Gordon Matenga said that Brown had taken several bank cards that could be used easily to make a “quick dollar” - she used them soon afterwards to buy things at a supermarket and petrol stations.

However, she also took larger goods including a mini dirt bike, a drone, a vintage radio, hunting gear, a camera and lens, a walkie-talkie and clothing.

She took the $3000 electric bicycle from a van parked on a driveway in Napier.

Brown was linked to two of the burglaries by leaving fingerprints.

Last October, Brown took a $1500 HP laptop from an unlocked vehicle. She also took the keys with a global position system (GPS) fob attached.

The owner used the device to track Brown to a road in Havelock North. He went there, saw his stolen items in her vehicle, confronted Brown and called police.

Brown left before the police arrived but the victim had taken her vehicle registration number.

Officers later found stolen items in her car, including fuel cards, sunglasses and the laptop.

Reviewing reports on Brown, a mother, Judge Matenga said she was sometimes described as loving, caring and good-hearted.

But he said she had a different side, which was manipulative and dishonest.

“You clearly have had a significant issue dealing with your substance abuses,” Judge Matenga said.

“When you are in the grip of your addiction you will do anything, it seems, to get your fix.”

Judge Matenga described Brown as a “recidivist spree burglar”.

He said he accepted she was remorseful, but the only realistic sentence was one of imprisonment.

In sending her to prison for three years and two months, Judge Matenga said he would not give her any credit for time she had spent on electronically monitored bail, because she had offended when she was supposed to be on it.

He said he would not make an order for reparation, because her sentence meant there was no realistic prospect that she would be able to pay for it in the next three years.

Ric Stevens spent many years working for the former New Zealand Press Association news agency, including as a political reporter at Parliament, before holding senior positions at various daily newspapers. He joined NZME’s Open Justice team in 2022 and is based in Hawke’s Bay. His writing in the crime and justice sphere is informed by four years of front-line experience as a probation officer.

Disney Cruise Line Employee Faces Child Pornography Charge

Tirso Neri, 44, was charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography.

Broward County Sheriff's Office

A Disney Cruise Line employee faces criminal charges on allegations he possessed child sex abuse material.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security took Tirso Neri, 44, of the Philippines, into custody at the Port Everglades port in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday.

He has been charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography, per a federal criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

Neri worked on the Disney Dream ship.

According to the complaint, authorities discovered sexually explicit photographs and videos of young children on two of his cellphones: a Samsung Galaxy and an Oppo smartphone.

The child sex abuse material was found in December after the ship docked in Fort Lauderdale. The cruise started in the Bahamas.

Authorities discovered on the Samsung a folder “titled with the name of an apparent victim that contained numerous sexually explicit pictures and videos of an Asian girl who appeared to be under 18 years of age,” per the complaint.

Authorities said the folder appeared to have been downloaded around August 2019.

Neri told authorities that he belonged to several social media chat groups and had downloaded adult pornography.

However, when authorities asked Neri about folders found on the Samsung phone that allegedly contained child sex abuse images, Neri claimed “sometimes he obtains folders in the chat groups and saves them to his phone without looking at them and then deletes them after,” per the complaint.

Authorities said they conducted forensic examinations on the phones and found numerous images of child sex abuse material on Neri’s Oppo smartphone, including videos “that were saved in a folder titled ‘Private.”

“In accordance with our zero-tolerance policy for this kind of alleged behavior, this individual is no longer with the company,” the Disney cruise line told PEOPLE in an emailed statement.

It is unclear if he has entered pleas or retained an attorney.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, text "STRENGTH" to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 to be connected to a certified crisis counselor.

It's easy to bash tech, but I've started taking robotaxis — and they're awesome

Your browser does not support the video element.

  • Unlike other hyped-up tech, self-driving taxis look like they could be the real thing.
  • You can take Waymo's software-powered taxis in San Francisco and Phoenix. They work just like an Uber.
  • Waymo's robot taxis aren't perfect, and there are very reasonable concerns about them. But also: They're self-driving taxis that really work!

Insider Today

It's easy to crap on tech. We — I — do it all the time.

Sometimes it's because tech doesn't work the way I want it to . Sometimes it's schadenfreude about a big hyped thing that falls flat . Sometimes it's just a sense that the tech we all depend on may be harming us in ways we don't understand and can't control.

But also: Sometimes tech reminds you that tech can be awesome, in the golly-gee-can-you-believe-it sense some of us used to have about this stuff.

Which is exactly how I felt after my last trip to San Francisco, when I took several rides in Waymo's robotaxis .

That's partly because the tech is … amazing. You really are in a car, driving around the city, with no one in the driver's seat. Software and sensors take care of everything.

And partly because the tech already seems so … normal. You order a Waymo via an app, just like an Uber or Lyft. It shows up, you get in, it takes you where you want to go, and you get out.

Yes, my 13-year-old son and I spent the first few minutes in our first Waymo texting our friends and family: OMG IM IN A SELF DRIVING TAXI. We also documented it on social, of course.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Peter Kafka (@pkafka)

We also felt a bit of the trepidatious rush you get when you sit down in a roller coaster and have that internal debate: Is this safe? It must be safe, because otherwise they wouldn't let you do it, right? But seriously, is this safe?

But after those first few minutes of novelty, we went back to doing what we always do in an Uber or a Lyft: zoning out on our phones, staring out the window, and spending next to no time thinking about who, or what, was driving us.

Which, to me, is really the most amazing part: This stuff is here, now, and you can … just use it.

At least some people can. Waymo, which is owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet, has a couple hundred self-driving cars roaming around San Francisco, and access is still limited there via a waiting list, as well as by geography . You can't get a Waymo to pick you up at San Francisco International Airport, for instance, or take you across the Bay Bridge to Oakland.

In Phoenix, where Waymo first launched consumer access , it has about the same number of cars but no waiting list. And now it's starting to roll out in Los Angeles and Austin.

We've heard about self-driving taxis forever, but they're just starting to become a reality

While Waymo says it drives tens of thousands of trips a week, even the most tech-savvy people I talk to have yet to ride in one.

And it's reasonable to have concerns about this tech as it rolls out. Waymo's rival Cruise halted its service last fall after a slew of incidents, including a grisly one where a self-driving Cruise dragged a pedestrian who had been hit by a human-driven car.

Related stories

Self-driving tech is also an obvious problem for humans who depend on ride-hailing services to make a living. (On my previous trip to San Francisco, one of my Uber drivers told me he had previously been a recruiter at Amazon who lost his job during one of Amazon's recent layoff rounds .)

And to be honest, I'm not even sure I would always order a Waymo if I had a chance. Right now, beyond the novelty, the big upside for me is that the fleet's cars — electric Jaguars — are comfortable and clean. And that the per-trip cost is about the same as an Uber Comfort (one level up from the base Uber X fare) — but really a bit cheaper, since you're not tipping your robot driver.

But there's no reason to believe that the cars will remain pristine, and that pricing will stay low, as this stuff rolls out more broadly. (Waymo doesn't disclose financials, and the company wouldn't tell me if it's making money on each trip. I assume it does not, for now; we do know Waymo has invested billions in this since it started out as a Google project in 2009.)

Still, I can think of all kinds of uses for Waymo — right now. Like using it for food delivery — which is happening in Phoenix, via Uber Eats . Maybe it's for people who believe a robot is more reliable than a human driver — at least we know a Waymo won't watch TikTok while driving on the highway like a Lyft driver did when I was in their back seat a couple of years ago .

Or maybe it's simply for people who would rather not interact with another human when they're in a taxi. Which is what David Margines, Waymo's director of product management, says is the service's chief appeal for customers right now. "It's their own space," he says.

Waymo's self-driving cars aren't perfect

Yes, there are still some issues with Waymo, at least in the rides I took recently. One is simply figuring out how to get in the thing: When your Waymo arrives, you unlock its doors with your phone — but only once it has driven to a very precise location that Waymo knows and you don't.

Which led, a couple times, to some awkward slow dancing between myself and the robot car. It would stop when I got near but wouldn't let me in because it wasn't exactly where it was supposed to be. Then I'd step away, and then it would lurch forward toward its still-unknown-to-me target spot. Then I'd step forward and it would stop — but it still wouldn't let me in.

On one of my trips, this happened on a particularly tight, winding San Francisco street. As my Waymo and I negotiated with each other, we ended up blocking multiple cars, including a minivan whose driver started honking at us in frustration.

"You can't honk at a robot," I told her, not very helpfully. "It doesn't care."

Meanwhile, a guy walking by stopped and took out his phone to record the scene. "You can put a cone on it to disable it," he told me, unprompted. Apparently he's right?

More worrisome to me was that on one of my trips — to a Warriors game at the Chase Center arena — at a busy intersection, a Waymo in front of us wouldn't respond to a traffic cop trying to wave it through a red light. Then another Waymo pulled up beside it and also didn't respond to the cop. So now three Waymos were sitting there, blocking traffic and waiting for the light. The traffic cop stopped trying to move us and just held his hands over his head in disgust.

I figured this was a well-known and understandable problem for Waymos — of course their software and sensors wouldn't respond to humans telling them to override traffic signals! Think of the problems that could cause!

But Margines told me that Waymos are, in fact, supposed to understand human signals like a traffic cop. A Waymo PR person sent me this clip from Waymo CEO Dmitri Dolgov showing a Waymo doing just that:

Leveraging AI for semantic understanding of complex driving scenes is a key capability of the #WaymoDriver . Check out this example of it autonomously interpreting and adhering to a police officer directing traffic in Los Angeles. pic.twitter.com/PyPqVaOc6B — Dmitri Dolgov (@dmitri_dolgov) January 19, 2024

But unlike with other Big New Tech innovations I've seen in the past — anyone still have a 3D TV in their living room? — I don't think self-driving tech is going away. I think the people behind the tech will figure out its possibilities, its limitations, and the places it does and doesn't make sense.

Meanwhile, Cruise is starting up again , but this time with humans in the driver's seat. Elon Musk has promised to unveil his robotaxi this summer, and while your doubt about anything Musk says is well warranted, you never know. So I think that one way or another, we are going to make some version of this standard for many of us in the not-far-off future.

Is that great? I don't know. But it really is amazing.
