Interlaken serves as an excellent base for exploring attractions in the Jungfrau Region, making it a popular starting point for many visitors on their alpine journey to Jungfraujoch. Begin your journey from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch with the Wengernalp Railway, enjoying a high-altitude transport adventure and a breathtaking ascent through an alpine wonderland.
Jungfraujoch , which sits at 3,463 meters above sea level, is a saddle between the mountains Jungfrau (4,158 meters above sea level) and Mönch (4,110 meters above sea level).
If you would like to embark on a highly-rated guided tour from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch , you may book it via GetYourGuide – From Interlaken: Day Trip to Jungfraujoch Mountain. In my opinion, a seamless experience to Jungfraujoch and comprehensive information about the region make the guide worth booking.
How to Get From Interlaken to Jungfraujoch
Most tourists start their journey from Jungfraujoch in Interlaken Ost . There are four ways to reach Jungfraujoch from Interlaken and they couldn’t be more different. So, what are these four options? Let’s find out more.
Option 1: Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen and Wengen
The scenic train ride from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, glacier-bound and awe-inspiring, is an unforgettable experience. The train departs from Interlaken Ost station and travels through the Lauterbrunnen Valley, passing by waterfalls and the picturesque village. The train then ascends to Kleine Scheidegg; here, passengers can enjoy a spectacular view of the famous trio of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
Here is the route that you will have to take from Interlaken Ost to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen:
- Lauterbrunnen – Travel by train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen village, then board the Wengernalpbahn (WAB), connecting Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg, featuring the world’s longest continuous rack railway at 19,114 meters.
- Wengen – As you ascend the mountain from Lauterbrunnen, you will be able to see almost the entire Lauterbrunnen Valley; furthermore, you’ll arrive in the car-free village of Wengen. Your train seamlessly continues its journey to Kleine Scheidegg—no need for a transfer.
- Kleine Scheidegg – Following the stop in Wengen, the train will then ascend to Kleine Scheidegg. Located 2,061 meters above sea level, Kleine Scheidegg offers spectacular views of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
- Eiger Glacier – Transfer at Kleine Scheidegg for Eiger Gletscher, then catch the ascending train to Jungfraujoch. The train then passes through the Jungfrau Tunnel and arrives at Jungfraujoch station where captivating scenery with glacial permafrost awaits.
Option 2: Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express
Alternatively, you can travel from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via the Grindelwald Terminal . At the terminal, you can take the Eiger Express Gondola to the Eiger Glacier and finally to Jungfraujoch.
Here is the aerial transport route that you will take from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald Terminal:
- Grindelwald Terminal – From Interlaken, you will take the train to Grindelwald Terminal. Grindelwald Terminal is a new terminal that connects passengers to either Männlichen or Eiger Glacier (Eigergletscher).
- Eiger Glacier via Eiger Express – Experience the Jungfraujoch Ascent as the Eiger Express Alpine Cableway brings you from Grindelwald Terminal to the Eiger Glacier. The train then passes through the Jungfrau Tunnel and arrives at Jungfraujoch station where the celestial observatory, snowy pinnacles, and the ice-covered expanse of Konkordiaplatz awaits.
Option 3: Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald
As a third option for your journey from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, consider the scenic alpine traverse that starts at the Grindelwald Train Station. From there, catch a train that will lead you to Kleine Scheidegg, making stops at Grindelwald Grund, Brandegg, and Alpiglen along the way.
Here is the transport route that you will take from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald:
- Grindelwald – Your train will stop in Grindelwald, the last stop of the journey from Interlaken.
- Kleine Scheidegg – From Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg, the cog railway passes through Grindelwald Grund, Brandegg, and Alpiglen. Along the way, you’ll be able to see the spectacular Eiger North Face.
- Eiger Glacier – From the Eiger Glacier, the Jungfrau Railway eventually reaches the Jungfraujoch station, where visitors can immerse themselves in the frozen splendor of the surrounding landscape.
Option 4: Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Guided Tour
A fourth option would be to join a 7-hour guided tour to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken . On this tour, you can enjoy a panoramic cable car ride, see the Eiger north face, visit the Sphinx Observation terrace, and explore the tunnels of the Ice Palace. This is a well-organized, highly-rated trip that is well worth the additional fee.
From Interlaken , you can take a guided tour of Jungfraujoch . You’ll travel from Interlaken to Grindelwald by coach. Then, you will ride the Eiger Express cable car from the Grindelwald terminal to the Eiger Glacier. After you change to a cogwheel railway, you will arrive in Jungfraujoch.
At the top, you will see the Great Aletsch Glacier , snow-capped peaks, and Switzerland’s neighboring countries. You can also see the Sphinx Observation Terrace and tunnels at the Ice Palace . Refreshments and meals can be purchased at the restaurant.
During the descent, you’ll pass Wengen and stop at Lauterbrunnen , where your coach waits for you to head back to Interlaken.
With GetYourGuide , you can reserve your spot now and pay later. To book the tour from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via GetYourGuide , simply click here – From Interlaken: Day Trip to Jungfraujoch Mountain.
Which Route to Jungfraujoch is Best?
The best route depends on what you want to see or what mode of transportation you prefer. These routes are equally beautiful, and I’m not going to preach that one is better than the other.
Take the first option if you wish to take in the scenery, and get a glimpse of Wengen and its surroundings. As an alternative route, going via Grindelwald is also a beautiful experience. Other views include Schreckhorn and the village of Grindelwald itself.
If you can’t decide, why not do both? Take the train to Jungfraujoch and take the Eiger Express down. Go up via the Eiger Express and go down by the Wengeralpbahn via Lauterbrunnen.
So which route is better depends on what you want to see. To make it easier for you, I have listed the highlights of choosing one over the other.
Highlights of Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen – Wengen
- Lauterbrunnen – Village with 72 waterfalls
- The car-free village of Wengen
- Kleine Scheidegg Mountain Pass
- Staubbach Waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen
Highlights of Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald
- Eiger Express
- Grindelwald Terminal – practical terminal that allows you to reach either Eiger Glacier or Männlichen Mountain.
- Grindelwald First , Bachalpsee , and Pfingstegg – Although you will not see these on the way to Jungfraujoch, you can visit these places in Grindelwald after.
Whichever route you choose to lead you from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch , I hope you enjoy it.

The best time to visit Interlaken and the Jungfrau region
As you might expect from a ski region, the Jungfrau winter months find the area awash with skiers and snowboarders who flock to Interlaken and the surrounding area to take to the snow-clad slopes.
Summer is no less popular, with holidaymakers flocking to the region for hiking and mountain excursions and to admire the stunning scenery.
The summits of the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch mountains will be cold at any time of year, but during late spring, summer and early autumn you can expect to experience warmer weather in the Interlaken area.
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Swiss Alps, the Jungfrau Ski Region is home to 70 kilometres of cross country trails and more than 250 kilometres of pistes, making it the ideal destination for those who love snow sports.
There are also ample opportunities for sledging, snowshoeing, winter hiking and ice skating, too.
You can expect heavy snowfall and cold conditions during winter. The mercury tends to stay below zero degrees celsius during the ski season, but things do warm up a little from March onwards.
So what’s the Jungfrau weather like during the warmer seasons? While the highest reaches of the mountains are cooler and may stay snow-capped all year round, the towns are a lot more pleasantly warm during the Swiss summer.
During June, July and August in particular, you may break into a sweat when hiking in temperatures of up to 24°C, and even during September it should be at least 10°C overnight in Interlaken.
The summer months are the perfect time to enjoy a refreshing dip in one of the Jungfrau Region’s beautiful lakes.
Spring and Autumn (Fall)
If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, Spring and Autumn (Fall) are the best seasons to visit. Visitors in Fall will be rewarded with the changing colours of the leaves, whilst those arriving in Spring will be greeted with wildflowers bursting with colour.
What to See in Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region
The stunning alpine scenery will have you eager to get outdoors and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Popular mountain excursions to enjoy include Harder Kulm , Jungfraujoch , Schilthorn and Schynige Platte .
Lake cruises on Lakes Thun and Brienz are an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, there are plenty of adventure sports on offer, endless hiking trails to explore and skiing and snowboarding are popular pastimes in winter.
Each of these has its own attractions, and wherever you roam or take a trip on the Jungfrau railway to, breathtaking scenery will greet you at every turn.
You may see snow capped alpine peaks even during summer, and whatever time of year you visit this part of Switzerland there are glittering lakes to sail on, gorges and glaciers to see and charming Alpine villages to capture on camera.
Whenever you visit and wherever you go, there’s lots to explore and plenty to do in this gorgeous part of Europe.
If you’re visiting the area for a few days or more, consider purchasing the Jungfrau Travel Pass which offers free and discounted travel on trains, funiculars, cableways and boats in the region.
Popular things to do in the Jungfrau region
While the availability of some pastimes is determined by the season, some of the attractions and activities of the Interlaken area are equally delightful all year round.
Many hikers can be found in the Jungfraujoch region during the warmer months. Once the snow has melted away by late spring, the array of hiking tracks that traverse the slopes and valleys are revealed.
Breathing in the freshest mountain air while the sun shines down is just one of the simple pleasures available to those who visit the Interlaken area in summer, and there are trails to suit all abilities.
Some of the best include a Giessbach Falls hike taken after the funicular train trip up to the top. You can also take a funicular to Mount Niesen for a panoramic hike around the ridge, or head to the Hasliberg mountain range which lies to the east of Interlaken.
Getting to Niederhorn peak involves both funicular and gondola rides, while you can travel by an historic cogwheel train to Schynige Platte, the departure point of which is just outside Interlaken.
Skiing and Snowsports
If you’re in the area during winter, then it’s pretty likely that you came to make the most of the magnificent ski slopes that the region is so abundant in.
Whether you prefer to take to the pistes or explore the magical landscape by cross country skiing, there’s something here for all abilities.
Other winter pursuits available include snowshoeing tours and sledging rides that will whizz you through this Swiss winter wonderland at high speed.
With numerous mountain ranges, lakes and valleys to explore, there’s lots to do in the Jungfrau region.
There are many pretty resorts and villages to discover too, from the bigger towns of Grindelwald and Interlaken, popular villages like Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Wengen, as well as other charming villages and hamlets.
Mountain Excursions
Jungfrau Railways operate a number of mountain routes including those to reach the summits of Jungfraujoch, Schynigge Platte, Harder Kulm and more.
This can make the Jungfrau region pass (also called the Jungfrau Travel Pass, and mentioned below) a worthwhile purchase for those who wish to delve deeper into the area.
Adrenaline sports
Adrenaline junkies may also appreciate the chance to sample exciting sports such as paragliding, skydiving or bungy jumping while in the area. In winter, taking a sledge down the snowy slopes can also fill both kids and adults with a thrilling sense of adventure.

An unforgettable experience I can hardly believe we are on the roof of Europe. An unforgettable experience. We would love to go hiking again, but we don't have enough time. We'll do it the next trip because one thing's for sure – we will return. Tricia Edwards Melbourne, Australia
This unspoilt area is magnificent I am here with my work colleagues. We are on our annual business trip and it's quite fantastic. This panorama is so extensive. The eternal unspoilt snow is impressive. Daniel Schalbetter Salesman Thun, Switzerland
Upwards in comfort The railway here is extremely comfortable and perfectly suited to older people and families – much better than a cable car. There is nowhere else with such a comfortable ascent. Laura Weber Doctor Germany

Frequently asked questions
High mountains: what is the best clothing for a trip to the jungfraujoch.
On your excursion to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, to the highest railway station in Europe, you will climb to an altitude of 3,454 metres above sea level and reach the alpine mountain world. In summer and winter, temperatures below freezing point are to be expected and weather changes can also occur at short notice. We recommend that you dress according to the so-called “onion principle” so that you can adapt your clothing to the conditions. The basic equipment for the excursion includes a jacket, closed shoes, a hat, a pair of gloves and sunglasses because of the high-altitude sun.
Does the weather play a role when visiting the Jungfraujoch?
Don’t worry about the weather. There is plenty to see and do on the Jungfraujoch in all weather, even the journey itself is worth the trip. Even if it is cloudy in the valley and it looks like bad weather, at an altitude of 3,454 metres above sea level and above, the clouds can often only be seen from above.
Where can I park?
For day visitors arriving by car, we recommend using the Park+Ride Matten bei Interlaken. An overview of all car parks and parking spaces and their live status can be found on the Parking page.
How often does a train go to the Jungfraujoch each day or how many connections are there?
The fastest and most comfortable way takes you via Grindelwald Terminal / the new Eiger Express tricable gondola to the Jungfraujoch. From the Eiger Glacier station there is a connection to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe every 30 minutes, depending on season and demand. For details, please visit jungfrau.ch/fahrplan .
How much does it cost for a child to travel to the Jungfraujoch?
Children up to 5 years of age always travel free of charge. Children aged 6 to 15 either travel free with the Junior Card or Children's Travelpass, or pay CHF 20.-. The above-mentioned family cards can be purchased for CHF 30 per child at any SBB station in Switzerland. The family reductions such as the Junior Card, Children's Travelpass or Swiss Family Card are not valid in combination with the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Unlimited Jungfrau Summer Pass. Children aged 6-15.99 years require the Jungfrau Travel Pass or Unlimited Jungfrau Summer Pass at a price of CHF 30.00 net per child.
Give yourself enough time
The visit to the Jungfraujoch is a day trip. It is best to reserve a whole day for this. Especially in summer, the hike to the Mönchsjochhütte and a visit to the Snow Fun Park (both on the large Aletsch glacier) are well worth your time.

This 7-day Train Journey Passes Through 5 European Countries — and Includes a Ride on Europe's Highest Railway
This train trip includes travel to five countries, a five-night stay in a Swiss village, and a trip on one of the most iconic railways on Earth.
Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Every once in a while, a train trip pops up that is exceptional — and if riding Europe’s highest railway and celebrating the New Year in Switzerland isn’t exceptional, I don’t know what is. The “Interlaken and the Jungfrau Express at New Year” from train tour company Vacations By Rail is a guided week-long tour — by train — through five countries over the New Year holiday. Along the way, guests will be treated to a breathtaking ride on the Jungfrau Railway , the highest train station in Europe, a cable-car journey to the highest peak in the Bernese Alps, and five nights in a small Swiss village. The cherry on top is a New Year’s Eve gala dinner with newfound friends in Interlaken, Switzerland.
The trip starts and ends in London and promises travelers seven days of train travel and mountain views. Lodging at four-star properties is included, as are most meals.
The journey kicks off in London, where travelers will hop aboard their first train of the journey: the Eurostar to Brussels, Belgium. After a train change in Brussels, the journey continues to Cologne, Germany where guests will check into their first hotel and enjoy dinner.
The next morning, everyone hops aboard a German railway line for the journey into Switzerland along the scenic Rhine Gorge , which is known for its steep mountain walls punctuated by castles and fortresses. The final destination is Interlaken, Switzerland, a city set in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps under the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.
Interlaken, a quaint Swiss village set between mountains and lakes, will be home for the next five nights . From there, the group will head out on smaller, day trips, including a train trip to the mountain village of Mürren where a cable car whisks travelers to the top of Schilthorn Mountain, a peak with a rotating restaurant that was featured in the James Bond film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."
After a down-day in Interlaken — where travelers can explore the area’s 45 mountain railways and aerial gondolas on their own — the group will make their way to Grindelwald, a snowy Alpine village set at the base of the Eiger, before returning to Interlaken for a special New Year’s Eve dinner.
On New Year’s Day, the trip will culminate with an excursion on the Jungfrau Railway, an iconic route that tunnels through the Eiger mountain and tops out at Jungfraujoch, a lookout platform at 11,332 feet in elevation — well above the perennial snowline.
From the heights of Jungfraujoch, the tour continues via train to Basel and then Paris , where travelers will hop aboard their final train: the Eurostar back to London.
The trip runs Dec. 27 or 28, 2023 through Jan. 2 or 3, 2024. The week-long adventure is currently on sale for $2,595 a person and includes all rail travel, six nights of hotel accommodation, a professional tour escort and local guides, and 11 meals. Guests are responsible for purchasing their flights to and from London and arranging airport transfers.
