Tour St. James’ Park at Newcastle United

st james park tour prices

Taking a tour of St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United FC, is like visiting the city’s cathedral.

st james park tour prices

St. James’ Park looms above central Newcastle.

I assume Newcastle, a wonderful and historic city, has a fine cathedral … somewhere. But without a doubt the biggest house of worship in town, the one that inspires the most devotion and passion, the one you will see rivers of people flowing towards every other weekend, is the 52,000-seat football ground at the top of the hill. It is visible from literally every part of town.

I can’t think of a place — certainly one the size of Newcastle — more connected and thoroughly associated with its football club. They have had success, but not won anything major for 50 years or more, and yet the fans fill St. James’ Park on a regular basis, travel with the best of them, and demand much of the their club — much more than they’ve been getting.

And at the hub of it all is a truly amazing stadium. With 52,000+ seats, it is now the eighth largest in England — the seventh largest for a club, with Wembley being the largest of all. But that’s only been a recent development, since West Ham moved into London Stadium, Tottenham into their new place, and there were expansions at Manchester City and Liverpool . And when I attended a game there, it was a Tuesday night, against Norwich City in the Championship , and there were more than 45,000 people there, singing like crazy.

By the way, this has been their home — this location, anyway — since 1892!

st james park tour prices

Magnificent St. James’ Park is right in the middle of town, 15 minutes from the station.

The stadium is so packed into the middle of town that a city street goes under one stand (at right).

They offer several tours, two of which are pretty standard for clubs:

  • The Classic Tour (£18) is the usual deal, going pitch-side and into VIP, media and dressing room areas.

But they have another tour that sound amazing.

The other is the Rooftop Tour for only £22.50! You go 150 feet up onto the roof, which is the largest cantilever structure in Europe. It’s glass to let the sun hit the grass, on the rare occasion it shines in the northeast of England. The tour happens twice each (non-game) weekend day from April to October.

I only found out about this option during my regular tour, so I didn’t get to do it. Here is a panorama from the top tier, featuring the Georgie accent of our cool guide:

You can book all these tours on the club’s website .

The rest of the rooftop tour is the usual stuff: media room, dressing rooms, pitch-side, but they also include the security control room, which is kind of cool.

Here is the tunnel walk-out, a feature of every tour. The guy with the beard is our guide, and the two older fellas are the two Dennises. More on them in a bit.

After my tour, the Dennises invited me out for a pint at The Strawberry Pub, right across the street from the ground and an absolute must-visit if you’re on a soccer tour. On game days it will be, as they say, heaving. On others, stop in for a pint and check out the memorabilia.

st james park tour prices

The Strawberry Pub.

Another hard and fast rule of English soccer travel: If local fans offer to buy you a pint, say yes. And then buy them one back. This is especially true if the offer comes from two older, utterly charming men, both named Dennis, who have been supporting Newcastle since the days of black-and-white photographs, who remember the three FA Cup wins in the 50s, who come to town for a pint every now and then, just because.

st james park tour prices

Inside the Strawberry Pub.

If you haven’t guessed, I did say yes, and even though I don’t drink alcohol anymore, sitting with the Dennises in the Strawberry, sipping lemonade while they told me stories about the old days, and trying to make them laugh, was one of the highlights of all my English soccer travels. Occasionally I would make one of them nod his head and say “Aye” in agreement with me, and at least once I made them laugh, and I got a “Good lad” from them. I wanted to hug everybody when I walked out of there, and (don’t tell my friends in Sunderland ), but I really admire the heck out of Newcastle United and hope they do well … for the Dennises, I mean.

Anyway, below is my phot0 gallery from the tour; click on the first image to scroll through them all. To read my other stuff about Newcastle — including the hospitality options I sell there — you can check their club page on this site. For more information on taking a tour, see  nufc.co.uk .

Sit Where?

Best seats at Newcastle United’s St James’s Park

  • Posted by by Matt Preston

When attending a Newcastle United game at St James’ Park, choosing the right seat can make all the difference in your experience. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to decide where to sit. However, with a little guidance, you can find the perfect spot to enjoy the game.

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a seat is your budget. Seats closer to the pitch and in the middle of the stand tend to be more expensive, while seats further away from the pitch and at the ends of the stand are usually cheaper.

However, keep in mind that cheaper seats may have a more limited view of the pitch.

Another factor to consider is the atmosphere. If you’re looking for a lively and energetic atmosphere, the Gallowgate End is the place to be.

This stand is known for its passionate fans and lively chants. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, the Milburn Stand may be a better choice. This stand is known for its comfortable seating and great views of the pitch.

About the Stadium

St James’ Park is the home of Newcastle United Football Club, located on the edge of Newcastle’s city centre. It is the largest football stadium in the North East of England, with a seating capacity of 52,305.

The stadium has four main stands, each with its own unique atmosphere and views of the pitch. The Milburn Stand is the largest stand and is located on the east side of the stadium.

It offers excellent views of the pitch and is the most popular stand among home supporters.

st james park tour prices

The Leazes Stand is located on the west side of the stadium and is the oldest stand. It has a steep rake, which means that the seats are close to the pitch, providing excellent views.

The Gallowgate Stand is located on the north side of the stadium and is known for its lively atmosphere. The Sir John Hall Stand is located on the south side of the stadium and offers excellent views of the pitch.

St James’ Park has a rich history and has undergone several renovations over the years. The most recent renovation was completed in 2000, which included the addition of a new roof and the installation of executive boxes.

While the stadium has many positive aspects, there are also some issues that visitors should be aware of. The stadium can be difficult to navigate, especially for first-time visitors.

The concourses can be narrow and crowded, and the toilets can be difficult to find. Additionally, the stadium can be noisy, which may be an issue for some visitors.

Overall, St James’ Park is a fantastic stadium with a rich history and a unique atmosphere. While there are some issues that visitors should be aware of, they are outweighed by the stadium’s many positive aspects. If you are a football fan, a visit to St James’ Park is definitely worth your time.

History and Redevelopment

St. James’ Park has been the home of Newcastle United Football Club since 1892. The stadium has undergone several redevelopments over the years to increase its capacity and improve facilities for fans.

In the early 20th century, the stadium was expanded to accommodate up to 60,000 spectators. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s when Sir John Hall took over the club that significant redevelopment work took place. The Leazes End was rebuilt, and a new two-tier stand was built on the Milburn side of the ground, increasing the capacity to over 36,000.

st james park tour prices

In 1998, the stadium was expanded again with the construction of the Sir John Hall Stand, which added an additional 11,000 seats. The stand was named after the former Newcastle United chairman who oversaw the redevelopment of the stadium.

In recent years, there have been discussions about further expanding the stadium to increase its capacity to 80,000 seats. However, the club has yet to announce any concrete plans for redevelopment.

Despite the stadium’s rich history and numerous redevelopments, there have been some issues with the stadium’s design. The asymmetrical shape of the ground and the distance between the pitch and the stands can make it difficult for some fans to see the action on the pitch. Additionally, the stadium’s location in the heart of the city can make access and parking difficult on matchdays.

However, despite these issues, St. James’ Park remains one of the most iconic stadiums in English football. Its unique design and passionate fanbase make it a must-visit destination for any football fan.

Notable Players and Managers

When it comes to Newcastle United, there have been many notable players and managers throughout the years. From legendary players to successful managers, the club has seen its fair share of talent.

Some of the most notable players to have played for Newcastle United include Alan Shearer, Jackie Milburn, and Peter Beardsley.

Shearer is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and a true legend of the game. Milburn, on the other hand, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have ever played for the club. Beardsley, meanwhile, is a fan favorite who played for the club on two separate occasions.

In terms of managers, Newcastle United has seen some of the biggest names in the sport take charge of the team. Sir Bobby Robson, Kevin Keegan, and Rafa Benitez are just a few of the notable names to have managed the club.

Robson, in particular, is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the club’s history, having led the team to a successful period in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

While the club has seen its fair share of success over the years, there have also been some issues. The club has had a reputation for being somewhat unstable at times, with ownership issues and managerial changes causing problems.

However, despite these issues, the club has always managed to bounce back and remain a force to be reckoned with in the world of football.

Overall, Newcastle United is a club with a rich history and a bright future. Whether you’re a fan of the club or just a lover of the beautiful game, there’s no denying the impact that Newcastle United has had on the sport.

For visiting supporters, the away section is located in the Leazes Stand, which is situated on the East side of the stadium.

This section can accommodate up to 3,000 away fans and is separated from the home supporters by a partition.

The view from this section is generally considered to be good, with the seats being elevated and providing a clear view of the pitch.

To access the away section, visiting supporters must enter the stadium via turnstiles 91-94, which are located on the East side of the stadium near the Leazes End.

These turnstiles are clearly marked with signage indicating that they are for away supporters only. Upon entering the stadium, visiting supporters will be directed to their designated section by stewards.

st james park tour prices

The hype around Newcastle United is maybe bigger than ever right now. The club's Average attendance ranks among one of the highest in the country and every football fan knows St James' Park is one of the best places in world football to catch a game. With Eddie Howe's revival in full swing in the Premier League and Champions League games back for the 2023/2024 season, tickets to games are in high demand as you can expect.

So if you're planning a visit to St James' Park for a game this season, just what exactly is the process?

How can I get tickets?

All Premier League home match tickets this season will be made available via a ballot process for Members. After each ballot period has closed, a ticket forwarding and resale listing will open for Season Ticket Holders. Any tickets listed for resale will then be made available to Members to purchase.

Being a member brings a range of exclusive benefits and priority access to home match tickets. Members will have a priority period for home match tickets. This season, the opportunity to attend online fan events with legends and players is included. The Club is also introducing a specific Membership category for international fans. Membership is priced at £37 for adults and £20 for under-18’s. Membership can be purchased at here . You can find out when tickets for games go on sale here .

When do tickets usually go on sale?

As mentioned above, one of the perks of being a member is that you have priority access for tickets. Those who are not members, however, still have the opportunity to buy tickets on the separate Online General Sale and Full General Sale dates.

Ordinarily there are one week gaps between the Members Sale, the Online General and the Full General sale dates. You can find more details on this here .

How much are tickets?

With Newcastle being back in the Champions League this season, tickets for group stage games against Milan, Dortmund and PSG will be £55 for adults and £30 for concessions.

What will my ticket look like?

For the 2023/24 season Newcastle have introduced digital tickets which will be available to download to your smart phone.

Your mobile pass is an electronic version of your physical ticket which enables you to scan into St. James’ Park using your phone and NFC technology. This is the same technology used for Apple Pay and Google Pay, so you may already be used to using it regularly. Newcastle have a guide in place to help you use them.

Are season tickets still available?

Season tickets have been renewed for the 2023/2024 season. Price wise, it was revealed that these tickets would rise by a blended average of 3.3% with the club freezing season ticket prices for juniors, while prices for other categories will rise by 5%. Supporters on existing long-term price deals will continue to have their prices frozen for the upcoming campaign.

A season ticket for an adult for the current season ranges between £753 - £1,108. For a full breakdown you can find out more about Newcastle's season ticket prices here and to find out more information on season tickets go here .

I'm a fan of the away team. Where do I sit and how do I get tickets?

The away section at St James' Park is notorious for how high up it is. Located on level 7 of the Leazes Stand it seats around 3,000. For tickets, you must go through your own club and generally need to have accumulated credits over time.

Can I book a stadium tour?

You can. You can book your place on an upcoming stadium tour through TripAdvisor . There are four different types of tours available that vary in price and you can find out more about St James' Park tours here .

What If I can't get a ticket?

If all else fails you can always watch the Magpies play on TV. Sky Sports, TNT Sports and Amazon split the Premier League games throughout the 2022/23 season.

You can get Sky Sports here from £22 a month . You can get TNT here while Amazon games will be taking place in December and you find out more here . Fans of Newcastle can also follow the inner workings of the club with Amazon series, We Are Newcastle United which you can watch on Amazon .

Runners by St. James's Lake in spring

Welcome to St. James's Park

Pomp and circumstance. Buckingham Palace. And a princely pod of pelicans!

Things to see and do in St. James’s Park

Take a stroll to Duck Island or the seven-mile Diana Memorial Walk through four Royal Parks. Take tea at a café by The Mall. Take a working lunch in the sunshine. Make friends with a pelican.

Take in the view. Take your time. St. James’s Park has so much to see and do.

St. James’s Park – pageantry, pelicans and picnics

If you love the spectacle and pageantry of a big royal event, a picnic at the bandstand or simply a quiet stroll after work, St. James’s Park is a park for every occasion.

It’s a hugely popular Royal Park, yet it never feels overcrowded, even when the sun brings out office workers on their lunch breaks. It’s a lovely place for a sandwich from one of our kiosks, or a picnic – and you can hire a deckchair if you’re going to make an afternoon of it.

Not surprisingly, since it’s flanked on two sides by royal palaces, St. James’s Park is best known for its royal connections and ceremonies – it plays host to weekly royal events, such as Changing the Guard, outside Buckingham Palace and major state occasions such as Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade in early June. The Mall is the great historical processional route, seen so often on television during landmark royal events.

Whether you’ve planned to attend one of these on your trip to London, or you live here and haven’t quite got round to going yet – combine it with a visit to St. James’s Park.

During ‘Changing The Guard’ ceremony, Police Officers are always present to ensure a safe and smooth event. If you are coming to watch, please do take care of your personal possessions at all times.  As with all crowded places, pickpockets have been known to operate in this area. Please report any suspicious behaviour to a Police Officer. For further advice, please visit the Metropolitan Police website .

Don’t miss Duck Island cottage, a quaint, seventeenth century cottage that once belonged to the royal duck keeper. Right by the lake, it's here that you're likely to see the park's famous pelicans. Not a palace, but no less lovely, is the elegant Storey’s Gate Café . For the best views of Buckingham Palace – and The London Eye – stand on the Blue Bridge.

Best time to see the pelicans

The six resident pelicans are fed fresh fish daily between 2:30pm and 3pm. It's always a popular sight.

The wildlife of St. James’s Park

The park, and in particular St. James’s Park lake , is a wonderful natural habitat and haven for wildlife and a great place to spot water-loving birds, from ducks, coots and moorhens, to shy Little Grebes and the occasional Black Swan. The lake in particular has been a major focus for our conservation and biodiversity – you’ll see the newly planted wildflower meadows and established reed beds fringing the water. These provide cover and sanctuary for nesting birds. Duck Island, a focal point in the park, was once a duck decoy.

Take your time and you should spot a rewarding variety of birdlife. Including pelicans – who are pretty easy to spot!

St. James’s Park – its history and monuments

St. James’s Park has a rich royal history from the time of King Henry VIII. It’s home to so many high profile royal events. But even Kings enjoy a moment to stroll unnoticed in the crowd – King Charles II used to meet his mistress, Nell Gwynn here. St. James’s Park’s history is full of surprises and secret stories – not all of them so romantic. King Charles II took his final walk through the park, on his way to be executed.

The park also has the highest concentration of statues, monuments and memorials by area of any of the Royal Parks. From the statue of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother – resplendent in a flamboyant plumed hat – to the simple, white marble Boy Statue.

The best way to uncover the history of the park is to join one of our monthly guided walks, or download a self-guided walking tour map, and discover at your leisure.

Art and culture in the park

Lovers of military history will find a visit to the Churchill War Rooms, where Sir Winston Churchill planned major Allied offensives in the Second World War, or the Household Cavalry Museum a stimulating and thought-provoking way to spend a few hours. Or if contemporary and cutting edge visual art is your passion, stop by The Institute of Contemporary Arts or The Mall Galleries, both situated in St. James’s Park.

Something for everyone

Take a look at some of the most popular activities and events in St. James's Park this winter.

Had a wonderful time in St. James's Park?

The Royal Parks are home to much of the city’s wildlife and amazing history. As a charity, we rely on kind people like you to help us care for St. James's Park. Anything you are able to give will help us continue to protect and preserve it.

The path alongside The Mall in St. James's Park

The Mall in St James’s Park is a grand processional route in honour of Queen Victoria, which has seen innumerable historic Royal processions.

Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade is the ceremonial parade ground in St James's Park and is the scene of Trooping the Colour on the King’s official birthday in June.

Duck Island

Sam Fender – Newcastle St. James’ Park Shows 2023 – FAQs

We asked the promoter to prepare a guide to help you navigate your way through any questions relating to the shows and ticket sales. We want to do everything we can to make sure that tickets only end up in the hands of genuine fans.

How can I buy Tickets?

Sam Fender and the promoter are committed to combating unethical secondary ticketing and resale.

For the 2023 SJP shows, we are operating a ‘’names-on-tickets’’ system to prevent unethical resale.

Your tickets will be sent to you much nearer to the shows.

So where should I buy my ‘’face value’’ tickets from?

All official ticket agent websites will be listed on tour advertising and at Samfender.com

Only buy tickets from the authorised websites:

www.ticketmaster.co.uk   www.seetickets.com   www.eventim.co.uk   www.gigantic.com www.Myticket.co.uk www.eventtravel.com

When will they go on general sale?

10am Friday 9th September.

How much are the ‘’face value’’ tickets?

The tickets are £57.50 and £47.50. All tickets are subject to a maximum 10 percent booking fee plus postage/transaction charges per order.

How do I arrange to buy tickets for someone requiring disabled access?

Persons requiring accessible seating, wheelchair bays or walking ambulant seats should contact the Club directly on 0344 372 1892 (option 1) to purchase Tickets.

Proof of disability (that is, statement of medium or high rate DLA for care / mobility, enhanced PIP for care / mobility along with further eligibility found at  https://www.nufc.co.uk/fans/info-for-disabled-fans/ ) will be required and any Tickets purchased will be placed on hold for 3 (three) working days whilst the Club awaits such proof.

If the proof is not received by the end of this period, the Tickets will be released for sale and the Ticket holder will be issued with a refund.

Proof of disability can be sent to  [email protected]   or posted to: Newcastle United Football Company Limited, St. James Park, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 4ST FAO: The Box Office.

BSL Interpretation is also available and can be booked by contacting: [email protected] .

What is unethical secondary ticketing and ticket resale?

Unethical secondary ticketing is when people buy tickets at face value and then re-sell them at inflated prices via non-artist approved methods and websites, thus denying real fans the chance to buy at face value.

Ticket touts and unauthorised resellers use multiple payment cards, false identities and sophisticated computer programmes (‘bots’) to buy up large amounts of tickets which they then offer for resale at highly-inflated prices.

How many tickets can I buy?

There will be a strict limit of 4 standing or 6 seated tickets per show date per transaction. This restriction is in place in order to give as many people as possible a fair chance to buy tickets. The whole party must arrive at the same time as the lead booker who bought the tickets.

PLEASE NOTE that any and all transactions that are detected as bot purchases, patrons creating duplicate accounts in order to purchase more than the ticket limit or any action that indicates a suspicious purchase in excess of the ticket limit, will be cancelled.

But we want to go as a bigger group/family?

You will have to try to complete another order.

Can I buy tickets as a gift?

The matching ID of the surname of the lead booker will be an entry requirement, the other tickets bought by that person can be used for other people if they ALL arrive with the lead booker.  If you want to buy as gifts, then you’ll also have to attend to get your recipients into the show.

What are the entry requirements?

Lead bookers may be required to produce email booking confirmation and a valid form of photo ID that matches the name on the confirmation.

Accepted forms of Photo ID are – A current driver’s licence (including provisional licence), a current or recently expired passport (provided the picture is a good resemblance of the holder) or the government backed PASS scheme  http://www.pass-scheme.org.uk/

What are the age restrictions?

All venue age restrictions are clearly displayed at the sales pages on the ticket agent websites.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult

No under 14’s on the pitch.

I can’t find my confirmation email?

In the first instance please check your junk or spam folder. If that doesn’t work, contact the customer services of the ticket agent you booked through. If you are unsure which company you bought from, this information is usually displayed on your credit card statement or bank statement.

I can’t go any more and need to sell on my ticket. What do I do?

The reselling of any Sam Fender ticket is strictly forbidden other than through the official face value resale platform of your original point of purchase or via Twickets. Any Sam Fender ticket offered for resale elsewhere, either on or offline (including Viagogo or any other unauthorised source including all secondary ticket retail websites), will result in the entire original booking being cancelled. The original purchaser and their party will be refused admission and any other purchases they hold will also be cancelled.

When will we receive our tickets?

They’ll be sent to you nearer to the time of the shows.

Are cameras allowed?

Professional cameras (deemed as cameras with removable lenses), video and recording equipment are strictly forbidden. Personal use cameras and smart-phone cameras are fine.

How early should we turn up?

Please check ticket agent websites for door opening times and do allow yourself plenty of time to get in before the start of the show.

I can’t get in with my tickets, it failed to scan and I’ve been turned away at the turnstile?

Don’t worry, we can try and help you. In the first instance head to the box office where someone will be able to help you work out what’s gone wrong. Remember DO NOT buy a ticket from someone you don’t know either in person on the street OR from an unauthorised secondary ticket website.

For further information regarding unauthorised ticket resale, please see below:

Recently the government has strengthened legislation designed to protect consumers, notably the Consumer Rights Act and the Digital Economy Bill. We are working with National Trading Standards and the Police Action Fraud Division to report all breaches of these acts as well as reporting any illegally advertised tickets to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Ticketing details released for England's clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James' Park

Ticketing details released for England's clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James' Park

It has recently been announced that St James' Park will play host to one of two England friendlies before the Three Lions head off to partake in Euro 2024.

Newcastle United's iconic stadium will host England vs Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday 3rd June with a 7:45pm kick-off.

This will be the first time since 2005 that St James' Park has hosted an England game, however, the stadium was used in 2012 as an Olympic venue.

Ticket release dates and prices have been released

The official England website has released information on when tickets will go on sale and how much they will cost.

Anthony Gordon

Tickets for the game at Newcastle will go on sale across the following dates:

• England Supporters Travel Club (2022-2024 England Supporters Travel Club members): Monday 26 February (12pm) – Thursday 29 February (11.59pm)

• My England Football members: Friday 1 March (12pm) – Monday 4 March (11.59pm)

• General sale: Friday 8 March (12pm)

Ticket Prices : £65, £50, £40 & £30 (FAMILY ENCLOSURE - £25 Adults/£12.50 Children under 16)

Concessions – Now available for OAPSs, students and U16s elsewhere in the stadium - £10 discount.

Will there by any Newcastle players involved to watch?

The big question will of course be, how many, if any Newcastle United players will be on display in that game?

Gareth Southgate yesterday came in for some flak from Newcastle fans after it was revealed that he was considering calling up Kobbie Mainoo over Lewis Miley .

The fact that Anthony Gordon has been one of the most in-form players in the league this season and still isn't being called up is another huge bone of contention. Perhaps by the time this fixture comes around at St James' Park, Southgate will have seen sense.
