What's The Difference Between Bourbon And Brandy?

B randy and bourbon, despite sharing a warm amber hue and finding common ground in both cocktails and culinary applications, are distinct spirits with unique characteristics that set them apart. These two beloved spirits may seem interchangeable at first glance, but a closer look reveals a tapestry of differences in their production, flavor profiles, and cultural significance.

Brandy, a broad category encompassing spirits distilled from fermented fruit juices, often brings to mind the rich, velvety notes of grapes. Whether it's the luxurious Cognac from France or the robust American brandy, these spirits deliver a nuanced sweetness and a complex bouquet of fruity aromas. Brandies thrive in the sophistication of snifters, inviting slow sips to appreciate their intricate layers.

On the other hand, bourbon emerges from the heart of American whiskey culture, crafted primarily from corn mash. The charred oak barrels used for aging impart a deep, caramelized sweetness along with hints of vanilla and a robust, smoky finish. Bourbon's versatility shines in cocktails, from the classic Mint Julep to the tart Bourbon Sour.

While brandy whispers tales of European elegance, bourbon boasts a proud American heritage rooted in Kentucky's bourbon country. The distinction lies not only in ingredients but also in the art of aging and the cultural narratives woven into each bottle. So, whether you're savoring the velvety embrace of brandy or relishing the bold spirit of bourbon, know that these amber elixirs, though united in color, diverge on a spirited journey of taste and tradition.

What Is Bourbon?

Bourbon, an American whiskey steeped in history and tradition, stands as a testament to the country's rich distilling heritage. Originating in Kentucky in the late 18th century, bourbon has evolved into a quintessentially American spirit with distinct characteristics.

Crafted from a mash bill that must legally contain at least 51% corn, the remaining grain components are typically some combination of rye, barley, and wheat in varying amounts, and contribute to the whiskey's complex flavor profile. Further magic happens in charred new oak barrels, which are never reused for bourbon , where bourbon matures, absorbing the rich, caramelized sugars from the wood. This aging process imparts a deep amber color and infuses the spirit with layers of flavor.

Bourbon's flavor profile is a blend of sweet and savory notes. Expect a palate of caramel, vanilla, and toffee derived from the corn, balanced by a subtle pepperiness from grain, especially rye. Subtle smoky oak undertones arise from the charred barrels, creating a robust drinking experience.

Versatility is at the heart of bourbon's allure. While sipping it neat or on the rocks highlights its intricate nuances, bourbon also thrivers in cocktails. From the timeless Whiskey Sour to the trendy Bourbon Smash , its bold character enhances the drinking experience. Bourbon's presence extends beyond the glass, finding a place in culinary delights as well. Whether used in barbecue glazes or decadent desserts, bourbon adds a distinctive American touch to gastronomy.

What Is Brandy?

Brandy, a venerable spirit with roots reaching back centuries, has woven a tapestry of sophistication and flavor through the annals of distillation history. Originating from the Dutch word "brandewijn," meaning burned wine, brandy's journey has been one of refinement and diversity. Made through the distillation of fermented fruit juices, brandy's essence lies in the luscious bounty of grapes, apples, pears, or other fruits. The process begins with the fermentation of these fruits, followed by distillation, creating a potent elixir that matures gracefully over time.

The flavor profile of brandy is a symphony of complexities. Grape brandies , like Cognac from France, boast velvety textures with hints of dried fruits, vanilla, and a subtle warmth. Apple and pear brandies offer a crisp, fruity experience, while brandies from diverse fruits add a unique touch to the palate.

Beyond its standalone sipping allure, brandy has etched its mark in mixology. Classic cocktails like the Sidecar and the Brandy Alexander showcase its versatility, while brandy-based punches bring conviviality to gatherings. Moreover, brandy finds its way into the culinary realm, enhancing the flavors of sauces like au poivre , desserts, and even flambéed dishes.

Bourbon Requires New Barrels... Legally

Aging plays a pivotal role in shaping the character and flavor of the final product. Bourbon and brandy, both esteemed in their own right, follow distinct paths when it comes to maturation, reflecting the legal requirements that govern their production.

Bourbon adheres to stringent regulations, one of which dictates that it must be barrel-aged for a minimum of two years in new charred oak barrels. This deliberate process not only imparts a rich amber hue to the spirit but also infuses it with the complex flavors derived from the charred wood. The result is a smooth, well-rounded bourbon, aged to perfection.

In contrast, brandy embraces a spectrum of possibilities in terms of aging. Brandy can be enjoyed in its unaged and white form , showcasing the pristine essence of the distilled fruit juices. Alternatively, brandy can undergo the transformative influence of oak barrel aging. The choice between an unaged, crystal-clear brandy and one with a golden tint rests in the hands of the distiller, allowing for a versatile range of expressions.

Brandy Is Simpler To Make

Spirit production involves a meticulous dance between ingredients and processes, and when comparing brandy and bourbon, the different levels of intensity in production become evident. Brandy, crafted from fermented fruit juices, follows a relatively straightforward path to distillation. The process begins with the extraction of fruit juice, which is then subjected to fermentation. Once the sugars in the juice transform into alcohol, the liquid is distilled, capturing the essence of the fruit in a pure and unembellished form. This simplicity in production allows brandy makers to focus on the unique flavors of the fruit without the complexities of mashing and brewing.

Conversely, the journey to create bourbon is a more intricate affair. Bourbon's foundation lies in a grain mash. This grain mixture is cooked, fermented into what is known as distiller's beer, and then distilled to extract the desired spirits. The additional steps of mashing and brewing, along with the specific regulations governing bourbon production, create a more involved process. Add to that the requirement that bourbon see at least two years in new charred oak barrels as opposed to no such requirement for brandy, and the work of bringing to market bourbon becomes quite a bit more laborious in comparison.

Different Spirits For Different Cocktails

Bourbon and brandy offer distinct flavor profiles that contribute to their unique roles in the world of cocktails. Bourbon boasts a robust and sweet character. Its flavor profile often features notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak, derived from the charred barrels in which it matures. These elements create a warm and full-bodied taste that stands out in classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned and Manhattan.

On the other hand, brandy encompasses a wide range of styles, from the fruity and floral notes of grape brandy to the richer and spicier tones found in apple or pear brandies. This diversity allows brandy to lend itself to an array of cocktails , including the citrusy Sidecar and the dessert-leaning Brandy Alexander.

When comparing the two, bourbon tends to offer a sweeter and more intense flavor profile, while brandy provides a broader spectrum of fruity and nuanced tastes. Bartenders often choose bourbon when crafting cocktails that require a bold and assertive base, emphasizing its caramel and vanilla undertones. Meanwhile, brandy's versatility makes it a favorite for mixologists seeking a spirit that can adapt to sweet cocktail creations.

Today’s brandy takes on numerous shapes and forms, delighting drinkers with unexpected expressions of the classic distilled wine. It’s often a favorite when enjoyed in cocktails such as the Sidecar and Brandy Crusta. If we’re talking old, old school, brandy even featured in early-1800s Mint Juleps. The distilled spirit also packs a punch as an after-dinner digestif when enjoyed by itself.

While brandy can be created anywhere in the world, the most well-known versions — Cognac and Armagnac — hail from two southwest regions in France. Grape-based brandies also abound in other countries, including the United States where it has deep, historical roots. Other styles of brandy might be created from apples (i.e. Calvados) or cherries, while famed Italian brandy grappa is based on the leftover pomace from winemaking.

While this infographic focuses primarily on grape-based expressions of brandy, fruit-based versions are also enjoyed worldwide. Follow the spirits’ journey, from vine to aged, distilled wine, in the graphic below.

Brandy’s Journey

The importance of self advocacy.

Image portraying Brandy and her two kids. She is a woman dealing with breast cancer while embodying self advocacy.

Brandy is a woman who embodies strength and self advocacy. Brandy also happens to be a mom of two and a woman battling breast cancer, just your typical superhero.

It all started when Brandy found a lump on her breast in the shower. This journey has taught her the importance of standing up for herself, despite the obstacles in her way. Brandy had to fight for her diagnosis, struggle to support her family financially, and find resources on her own. Her story emphasizes the importance of self breast exams and finding an understanding doctor to help navigate the way.

Despite finding a lump on her own, it was very difficult for Brandy to get a mammogram. Her insurance kept denying her due to her young age. This made it extremely difficult for her to find a doctor, allowing the cancer to grow even more. By this time, she had two tumors that had dramatically increased in size. While the first doctor she saw was skeptical of the lumps due to her age, she was able to see a second doctor for another opinion. The doctor diagnosed her with stage 2 breast cancer. This proves the importance of self advocacy. Following this diagnosis she quickly received many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Brandy is now going in monthly to continue her treatment.

Brandy shared that one of her takeaways from having breast cancer is understanding that disease is not a death sentence. While she’s had to face obstacles, Brandy wishes there were more people who understood that cancer is not the end of the world. In fact, it may be a new beginning. Brandy doesn’t need people to be sorry for her because she is strong and getting treatment. That being said, breast cancer certainly makes things difficult. Through her experience with breast cancer, Brandy’s husband also received a health diagnosis of his own that made the financial side of things even more difficult.

Brandy decided to search for financial support online and found United Breast Cancer Foundation. UBCF supported Brandy through the individual grant and the child sponsorship programs. This support allowed her to keep her utilities on and support her two wonderful children. Brandy would most definitely recommend UBCF to those dealing with breast cancer.

UBCF is grateful for donors and the impact they have on those affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. For more information on how to donate or receive aid from UBCF, please visit UBCF.org.

Role of Customer Journey Mapping in Brand Journey

Role of Customer Journey Mapping in Brand Journey

Customer Journey Mapping is an important tool for Brand Journey. It helps identify customer touchpoints and understand the overall journey a customer takes toward engaging with your brand.

A customer journey map helps companies to understand how users interact with their brand at multiple points throughout the customer experience. This can include identifying areas for improvement in customer satisfaction as well as developing relationships with potential customers.

By mapping customer journeys, businesses can identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to optimize customer experiences. This helps create a more unified Brand Journey that resonates with customers.

It also allows businesses to measure the success of Brand Journey activities and make changes as needed. It provides valuable feedback on how well Brand Journey elements are being received by customers and allows businesses to adjust Brand Journey activities accordingly.

Job title aside, the customer journey is all about understanding the process your potential customers go through to consider, research and purchase your products and services. Brand managers, customer experience managers, and brand strategists are all tasked with optimizing this journey to ensure customer satisfaction.

Conclusion!

At the end of your Brand Journey, you’ll have a clear vision of who you are and what makes you unique.

You’ll also have a plan for how you want to express that vision through your brand.

Taking the time to understand and develop your Brand Journey will help you create a relevant and cohesive brand that stands out from the competition.

Viral TikTok Breaks Down How Beautifully Bluey Depicts One Character’s Infertility

“Well, there’s something Auntie Brandy wants more than anything.”

Bluey is hailed by parents as being A+ children’s entertainment (with plenty of educational moments to boot!). But it also addresses tender, delicate issues in a sensitive way. These subtle nods to challenges like being gluten-free or having a rainbow baby are often first noticed by diehard fans. The most recent example of this has to do with Chili’s sister Brandy Cattle, also known as Auntie Brandy to Bluey and Bingo. TikTok discovered a connection between Auntie Brandy’s infertility journey and one of Chili’s early parenting moments from a previous episode — and it will break your heart. Note: Spoilers for Season 3 are ahead.

The theory shows just how deep Auntie Brandy longs for a baby.

TikTok user @world.shaker posted about this theory on Sunday, which has since gone viral. “#Bluey has emotionally destroyed me with this callback,” he wrote, before using the hashtags #infertility and #infertilityjourney among others. This theory has gone viral because it ties two episodes together in such a way that would be a huge coincidence if it wasn’t true.

First, a little background. His new video is in response to a comment from a previous video , in which he said, “Nothing’s really made me cry like ‘Baby Race,’ you know?” referring to Season 2, Episode 50 of Bluey. TikTok user @brittany.elizabet5 commented, “Brings me back to ‘maybe she saw something she really wanted’ from baby race and it wrecked me 😭😭😭.” This comment prompted him to look into the connection, and this new viral video is the result.

View on TikTok

In the video, (which he warns, “ Bluey Season 3 spoilers incoming”), @world.shaker pulls up Season 3, Episode 31 of Bluey, “Onesies,” where Auntie Brandy is playing with Bingo in a tiger onesie. Chili can be heard explaining why she hasn’t been around to visit the kids in a while.

“Well, there’s something Auntie Brandy wants more than anything as well,” she says. “And she can’t have it. And there’s not really anything anyone can do.” It’s implied that she’s talking about a baby, which is already extremely sad. But the earlier episode from Season 2 provides even more heartbreaking context.

Next, @world.shaker plays a clip from “Baby Race,” which is a flashback episode from when Bluey was a baby. “Why did I decide to walk in the kitchen?” Bluey asks in this episode, which shows her in a diaper walking behind Chili doing the dishes.

“I don’t know, sweetie,” Chili responds, as Chili turns around, surprised to see Bluey reaching out her. Her shocked face quickly turns to delight as she gets the biggest smile on her face seeing her daughter walk for the first time.

“Maybe you just saw something you wanted,” adds Bingo. At this point, @world.shaker has mashed the two clips on top of each other. On the bottom video, you can see baby Bluey reaching out to her Mum — aka, the “something” she wanted. She has a tear of joy in her eyes as she lifts her arms to welcome her baby. On the top, Auntie Brandy is seen lying on her side in the grass. After playing with Bingo, her niece runs away from her. Brandy just lies in the grass with arms reaching out to nothing as she has no baby to reach back toward her. It’s incredibly, deeply sad.

Despite not having any children of her own, Auntie Brandy views her nieces as hers and loves them so powerfully, yet, nothing can quite compare to having a baby of her own. It’s clear the pain of seeing those little ones is just too much to bear, and seeing it compared to Chili’s bond with her daughters makes the moment even more impactful.

“When people ask why we care about a kids’ show, you show them this clip,” @world.shaker says at the end of the video, looking emotional. He also commented on the video, writing, “The hands. One child walking towards while the other runs away. Their faces.” Bluey gets deep.

People were relating to Brandy’s journey.

Commenters on the video were feeling for Brandy. “GIVE AUNTIE BRANDY A BABY DAMMIT 😭,” one person wrote. “That’s the fastest something has ever made me cry, congrats,” another said.

“Omg so Brandy hasn’t seen Chilli & Bandit in 4 years bcoz they have the kids she can’t have & she can’t be around that😳 Omg. That’s dark & so sad,” wrote another.

“My name is Brandy and I've been struggling with infertility for 12 years,” one person commented. “This scene wrecked me.”

Someone else suggested, “I hope in a future episode Aunty Brandy can adopt. It could be a different breed of dog and they could have a discussion about all types of families.”

Bluey can open a conversation about infertility with kids.

Director of the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand Manuela Toledo said “Onesies” was a good episode to help parents talk to kid about infertility or kids born from fertility treatments.

“There's lots of different causes of fertility, that program's not appropriate to go into why Brandy didn't have a baby or wants to have a baby and can't have a baby at the moment,” said Toldeo, per ABC News Australia .“ It's really important to understand it's not just medical infertility, where people try and they can't have a baby.”

She added, “There's also lots of social factors that might come into it. Maybe she's a single woman and hasn't been able to find a sperm donor, or maybe she's in a same-sex relationship and they haven't been able to utilise sperm or they haven't been successful with a sperm donor. There's lots of other things that could be going on in the background, but I think the important thing is that it actually opens that conversation.”

Leave it to Bluey to depict something so raw in such a beautiful, heartbreaking way.

The Best Bottles Of Brandy Under $30, Just In Time For Thanksgiving

Zach Johnston

It’s always a good time for tasty, cheap brandy. That’s no small category, either. There’s a lot of quality juice at affordable price points — due to the fact that a fair amount of it is made here in the U.S. So while our parameter here is “under $30,” we’re not talking about swill. Any of these bottles would make a great bottle to bring to Thanksgiving dinner or gift for the dark spirits lover in your life.

The 15 bottles below are our picks for the best cheap bottles of brandy to buy right now. Perfect if you’re whipping up a batch of hot toddies to fight the cold winter nights. A quick note on deciphering brandy labels before we begin: In general, you’ll see VS, VSOP, and XO on bottles, like “Hennessey VSOP.” “VS” means “very special” and is a blend of at least two-year-old brandies. “VSOP” means “very superior old pale” and is a blend of at least four-year-old brandies. “XO” means “extra old” and is a blend of at least six-year-old brandies (sometimes this is called “Napoléon” as well). And, lastly, there’s “Hors d’âge” which means the brandy is aged for up to ten years or longer.

Of course, there are different words for each of these terms if the brandy is from, say, Spain. Also, brandy makers in the U.S. often use the French designations with zero respect for the age regulations they’re meant for, which adds a confusing wrinkle. Regardless, the info and the bottles here should get you started on your brandy journey, just in time for the beginning of the holiday season.

Paul Masson Grande Amber Brandy

brandy journey

Style: California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $11.99

The Brandy:

This American brandy is a blend of California winemaking and Kentucky bourbon ingenuity. The grapes are grown in California and the brandy is aged and bottled in Kentucky. According to the label, this brandy spends three years aging in oak before going into the bottle.

A distant note of grape juice underpins clear bourbon caramel and vanilla flavors. Light touches of bitterness and black pepper spice mingle with the caramel sweetness. That light spice carries on to a thin, sweet finish.

Bottom Line:

This is solidly in the “mixing” category. Brandy old fashioned, eggnog, mulled wine , and the aforementioned hot toddy are all viable candidates.

Korbel Brandy

brandy journey

Style: California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $12.99

Korbel is a must-have for whipping up Wisconsin’s favorite drink, the brandy old fashioned . As with all the brandies on this list, that also makes it the perfect candidate for a hot toddy.

This Sonoma brandy actually gains a lot of depth over its two years in the barrel. There’s a clear sense of caramel that leans towards a butterscotch sweetness. The oak comes through with a hint of spice. There’s a slight minerality with a clear note of vinous grapes on the warming finish.

This is designed for the old fashioned. Use it for that! It also works really well with cola (especially Coke).

E&J VSOP Premium Brandy

brandy journey

Style: California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $13.49

E&J VSOP hails from the iconic Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery in Modesto, California. The juice is aged for two years before bottling, making it pretty versatile at this price point. You can drink this stuff in a highball or cocktail. It also works as a great dessert brandy. Pour some of this over a sponge cake or ice cream and you’ve got a nice boozy bump to that dessert.

Wet brown sugar mingles with baking spices and a note of sunny meadows. Cream soda dominates the palate with a wisp of bourbon vanilla, maple syrup, and plummy sherry. The end is bold and long-lasting with a return of the warming spice alongside a little bit of oak.

We’re still squarely in the mixing category with this one. Still, give it shot on the rocks or in a highball with some fizzy water to cool it down.

Paul Masson Grande Amber VSOP Brandy

brandy journey

Style: California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $14.20

We can’t go on without hitting on Paul Masson’s VSOP. This is one of the better brandies you’ll find for under $20 in the U.S. This expression is the blend of Paul Masson’s Grand Amber (above) and imported Cognac. That addition of the real-deal stuff from France sets this brandy above the rest of the pack.

Notes of fatty hazelnuts and dry Champagne grapes lead the way. There’s a matrix of spices at play, with cloves out front. Cigar smoke, oily espresso beans, and freshly ground allspice round out the sip before it reaches a dry finish.

This is starting to get into workhorse brandy territory with applications in cocktails, highballs, and on the rocks working well with this expression.

St-Rémy VSOP

brandy journey

Style: French Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $14.99

St-Rémy is a classic French gateway brandy. Its price point is the biggest draw, but the booze is backed up with a decent grape-forward essence. That’s thanks to a base wine that’s a blend of — deep breath — Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Gamay, Ugni Blanc, Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The juice is then aged for four years in small format French oak barrels before hitting the bottle.

This is a big departure from the Californian brandies populating this list thus far. Fruit orchards, rays of sunshine, and wildflowers lead the way on this sip. That wide-focus narrows on the palate to present ripe apricots and peaches with an almost honeysuckle floral hint that’s cut by a lemon rind citrus on the very end with a final dry, vinous touch.

You can warm this one up in a snifter, in the sense that it’s a solid entry point French brandy that’ll help build your palate and lead you to better things in the brandy world.

Korbel Brandy XS

brandy journey

Style: Blended California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $14.99

Korbel XS is the “Extra Smooth” brandy that’s a stand out on this list. The brandy is spiked with vanilla, spices, sugars, and orange essence to really amp up the mixability of the brandy.

There’s a clear bitterness upfront with whiffs of orange and baking spices. Later, the taste leans into cream soda vanilla that errs a little saccharine. The spices, bitter orange, and soda pop vanilla all combine on a quick end that fades with a slight burn.

This works really well in an old fashioned or Brandy Alexander (think chocolate and orange with a creamy body).

E&J Brandy XO

brandy journey

Style: California Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $14.99

E&J’s XO deserves some love. Although this is designated as an “XO,” it’s still only aged for a minimum of two years. It is, however, charcoal filtered. A lot of the harsher edges are whittled away through that process.

That classic creamy vanilla of U.S. produced brandy is front-and-center. There’s a good sense of rich toffee and very dark brown sugar on those vanilla coattails. The finish is velvety, creamy, sweet, and full of that continued presence of vanilla.

This is a dark, spicy, and sweet brandy that suits the Christmas sipping season where the eggnog flows and we all bathe in mulled wine.

Presidente Brandy

brandy journey

Style: Mexican Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $15.99

Mexico’s Presidente Brandy is making big waves in the U.S. and with good reason. This is a solid brandy at an accessible price. This was also one of the most popular drinks in Mexico for a very long time — so much so that it was the “ National Drink of Mexico ” at one point.

There are notes of vanilla that are tempered by rich marzipan. The vanilla dries out and has more of a saltwater taffy essence as oak, spice, and a hint of florals linger in the background. The finish holds onto the dryness and ends strong.

While you can drink this one neat or on the rocks, it really shines as a base spirit for a great cocktail.

Raynal VSOP Brandy

brandy journey

Style: French Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $16.79

Raynal is one of the biggest French brandies in the United States. It’s the perfect balance between affordability and quality. The brandy is a blend of white grapes from Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne that are then aged in French oak for the requisite four years.

This brandy smells like velvet and nuts (walnuts and almonds dominate). Hints of freshly grated ginger spice things up with a nice underbelly of candied dried fruits next to a wisp of fresh flowers. The finish is vinous and dry, with a lingering moment of ginger and nuttiness.

That sharp ginger makes this a nice base for a sidecar cocktail spiked with ginger syrup. It’s also a quality brandy for a highball.

brandy journey

Style: French Brandy ABV: 40% Average Price: $19.99

St-Rémy XO is a mellowed and very tasty brandy that’s always around $20 a bottle. This brandy is a masterclass in French grapes. It blends distilled wines from Burgundy, Champagne, Rhône Valley, Languedoc Roussillon, Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and Beaujolais into each bottle.

Figs, gingerbread, sun-dried grapes, and butterscotch are present up top. The sweetness of figs peak as a clear espresso bean bitterness counterpoints that fruity sweet edge. There’s an echo of wildflowers in the background as the bitterness and sweetness fades with a nice velvet texture at the end.

This is a solid sipper (with a little ice). Take your time with it to let it open up in the glass and then your senses.

Laird’s Straight Applejack 86

brandy journey

Style: American Fruit Brandy ABV: 43% Average Price: $25.25

This apple brandy, or applejack if you will, is 100 percent apple brandy made from 17 pounds of apples per bottle of brandy. This is a very German-American spirit with clear heritage derived from Germanic fruit brandies married to U.S. aging processes like bourbon and Tennessee whiskey.

Granny Smith apples baked in butter, cinnamon, bourbon vanilla and caramel, and brandy lead the way here. Then a billow of smoke arrives with a clear sense of the charred oak barrel. The vanilla, spice, and tart apple carry through to a bold and warm finish that feels like the ghosts of a fallow apple orchard.

This is nice on the rocks or as a funky and fruity old fashioned base.

Lustau Brandy Solera Gran Reserva

brandy journey

Style: Spanish Brandy Distillery: Lustau Age: 40% Average Price: $26.40

This is a shockingly decent brandy at this price point. Lustau is so revered in distilling circles that Ireland’s iconic Redbreast uses their used barrels to age one of their best high-end expressions. The Gran Reserva expression is aged in used Amontillado sherry casks for around three years under the Spanish sun in Jerez, Spain.

Orange, coconut oil, oak, vanilla, toasted almonds, and baking spices lead the way. There’s a real sense of freshly ground nutmeg and allspice that leads to a rich and buttery fruit cake full of sun-dried fruits. Espresso and dark chocolate bitterness cut in and highjack the spices, sending them to a warm and sunny end with a hint of dry Spanish grass.

Let this warm nicely in a big snifter and then take your time nosing and sipping. It’ll help you get a deeper knowledge and entry into the world of Spanish brandy.

De Luze VS Cognac

brandy journey

Style: Cognac Age: 40% Average Price: $26.99

This a real-deal brandy from Cognac. The heritage of this Cognac house goes back 24 generations to the 1600s. The juice is a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne grapes from some of the best vineyards in the Grande Champagne region of Cognac. The expression is then aged for two years in French oak before direct bottling without any meddling.

This is a dialed-in sip. Equally sweet and earthy prunes and dates lead towards a rush of wildflowers in full bloom. Soft notes of orange zest and lemon citrus dance with wisps of oaky smoke, Christmas spices, and deep green grape leaves. A note of lavender mingles with roasted nuts as the velvet finish hits flowers, fruit, and oak notes. This is pure sunshine.

Cognac for under $30? Sign us up! This is a decent sipper with a little warmth that really embraces you as it goes down.

Metaxa 5 Stars

brandy journey

Style: Greek Brandy ABV: 38% Average Price: $27.99

This Greek spirit is a blend of brandy, Muscat wine, and botanicals (not unlike gin). It’s then aged for five years — hence the “Five Star” designation. This process makes for a wholly unique experience with botanicals like anise and rose shining through the distilled grape base.

Bold stone fruit, fresh honeycomb, and a field of wildflowers lead the way. Then the spices hit with a big dose of Christmas spices leading into a bowl of dried roses. The fruit comes back with a note of oak on the finish.

This is a definite mixer for highballs. Really fizzy water, lots of ice, and a twist of lime or lemon really open this blend up in the glass.

Courvoisier VS Cognac

brandy journey

Style: Cognac ABV: 40% Average Price: $28.99

This Cognac just squeaks by at $28.99 per bottle. This is a good entry-level brandy that has pretty solid name recognition. The juice is a blend of four to seven-year-old brandies made primarily from grapes grown in the Fins Bois region with a solid percentage of Petite Champagne grapes thrown in to balance things out.

Dried grapes, ripe apples and pears, and creamy chocolate mingle on the nose. The florals feel more like a fruit orchard in full bloom on a spring day. Coffee bitterness arrives next to barrel spiciness with a wisp of smoke lurking far in the background. The fruit and florals bring about a quiet-yet-warming final note.

Another Cognac for under $30? That’s a win for this list. It’s also a win for you. This is a very sippable brandy that also works as a great gift for any brandy lover.
