Blues Traveler is an American rock, blues and jam band, formed by John Popper and Brendan Hill in 1987, from Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.

Originally formed under the moniker The Establishment by harmonicist, singer and guitarist John Popper and drummer Brendan Lee, the band’s earliest releases were in the form of cassette tapes featuring original songs as well as covers, including Van Morrison’s “Gloria". The band began jamming regularly and building a repertoire of songs before moving to New York City and performing on the club circuit, soon making a name for themselves as relentless live performers.

With a line-up consisting of Popper, Lee, guitarist Chan Kinchla, and bassist Bobby Sheehan, the band signed with A&M Records who released their self-titled debut album in 1990, and their subsequent album “Travelers & Thieves” in 1991. Following a dangerous motorcycle accident lead-man Popper was unable to perform for a number of months, however returned to release the band’s third studio album, aptly named “Save His Soul”.

The band’s fourth full-length “Four” in 1994 represented a mainstream breakthrough for Blues Traveler, despite poor sales to begin with. The 1995 Grammy Award winning single “Run-Around”, taken from the album, became one of the year’s most popular and best-selling singles and catapulted the album “Four” to popularity. Following the release the band played ’94’s Woodstock Festival and opened for the Rolling Stones. In an attempt to capture the magic of the band’s live performances they release the double album “Live from the Fall” in 1996, followed by their fifth full-length “Straight on Till Morning” in 1997.

In 1999 bassist Bobby Sheehan was found dead in his home with cocaine, Valium and heroin in his system, deemed an accidental suicide, he was eventually replaced by Kinchla’s younger brother Tad. Along with new keyboardist Ben Wilson, Blues Traveler released an EP entitled “Decisions of the Sky: A Traveler’s Tale of Sun and Storm”, followed by their sixth full-length “Bridge” in 2001.

With a move away from A&M to Sanctuary Records, the band released “Truth Be Told” in 2003, followed by another live album “Live on the Rocks” the year after. Blues Traveler subsequently released the Jay-Bennett-produced “Bastardos!” in 2005, a cover album of their own songs “Cover Yourself” in 2007, “North Hollywood Shootout” on the label Verve Forecast, and the group’s 11th studio album “Suzie Crack the Whip” in June 2012.

Live reviews

If you like the blues, chances are you’re gonna like Blues Traveler- and if you’ve never heard frontman John Popper’s second-to-none harmonica-playing skills before, prepare to be blown away.

The band formed in the early 1990s, along with the wave of Grateful Dead-esuqe jam bands like Phish and Widespread Panic, and have been playing the blues and, erm, travelling (back in the day they gained a reputation for non-stop tour schedules), ever since. Their blend of psychedelic rock, old-school blues and habitual improvised on-stage jamming makes their shows something continually unique, even with their playing nightly for months at a time.

Blues Traveler have made an annual occurrence of playing at the beautiful and iconic venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, for the last 20-odd years, and this was were I caught the travelin’ band of Princeton blues rockers a couple of years back. They played amidst fireworks (!), and their close to 2 hour set consisted of solid classics like ‘Save His Soul’ (a rarity in their current live set), and the foot-stomping ‘Love Of My Life’, for which Popper traded his harmonica for guitar. The highlight though, had to be the band’s spectacular opener, a raucous cover of Jimi Hendrix’s unforgettable version of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. This was a uniquely awesome show in a venue to match, and Blues Traveler are still doing what they do best, even two decades on.

Blues Traveler are one jam band that I actually like. I saw them at H.O.R.D.E. Fest a few times back in the day and they were always awesome. In 2013, they performed Save His Soul in its entirety to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that album, and again, they were awesome. Last year they were also very good, but I just couldn’t get into their collaborative selections with 3OH!3. Unfortunately, it seems they have gone even further down that electronic/jam/hip-hop fusion road over the past year. The show started out great, with “Things Are Looking Up” followed by “Dropping Some NYC” and “But Anyway”, but then control was handed over to Rome Ramirez. I like Rome, but I found it strange that Popper was taking a step back from his own show. “Run-Around” put the train back on its track for a minute, but then it was time for another collaboration with Hanson…as if we hadn’t had enough of them. Covering “What I Got” with Rome provided a good taste of what’s to come at Reggae on the Rocks this year, but again, wasn’t this a Blues Traveler show? - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/06/4th-of-july-red-rocks-07-04-15/#sthash.9PBpEXKt.dpuf

Blues Traveler, the name is a great clue to the kinds of music they make, traditional blues with a wonderfully free spirited vibe. Although the genre of Blues is very much at the core of what the band does, there is influence from the genres of psychedelica, rock, folk and soul.

A band unmatched in musical passion, having toured their discography for over twenty years they appear to get better with every single show. Classic tracks such as 'Hook' have been re-imagined and developed to include more complex instrumental and is delivered in a generally more sincere manner. The crowd watches on in almost complete silence whilst the band works onstage and only make themselves heard to cheer loudly at the closure of each track.

By the time the band performs 'But Anyway' every musician onstage is quietly prepared to perform to their extreme for the audience and use all of their musical ability that is required for this folk heavy piece of Blues. Blues Traveler are very much an act who's values and processes do not appear to have changed in their 25 year career span.

Excellent show. Brothers Keeper were the supporting band - John Popper sat in with Brothers Keeper on their last number, before he came on with Blues Traveler. After the concert, we went into the Downtown Saloon where a local blues band were playing. When they finished, John Popper and Brothers Keeper got up and gave an impromptu concert in the pub! Brilliant! We had come to Leesburg from the UK to hear Blues Traveler - When We told John that he bought us a drink! Great guy!

The band was amazing!!! The venue was cool because its small and intimate. Good sound. The only complaint was the assholes that attended. Some of the audience were disrespectful and obnoxious...which happens at concerts, but this took the cake. Maybe because its Reno?

A very nice show but too few songs of the past. It was nice they played stuff from their up-coming album, but there's nothing better then the good ole rock and roll. It was a good night except for the security personnel who were a little too pushy.

Run-Around the Block: The Enduring Story of Blues Traveler’s Iconic Hit

Twitter

Blues Traveler’s Milestone: A Closer Look

“blues traveler: celebrating decades of harmonica-fueled rock legacy and infectious tunes, transcending a one-hit wonder status.”.

When it comes to American rock bands that have made an indelible mark in the world of music, Blues Traveler is undoubtedly one of them. Formed in Princeton, New Jersey in 1987, the band has seen numerous changes in its lineup over the years, but the core members – John Popper (vocals, harmonica), Chan Kinchla (guitar), and Brendan Hill (drums) – have remained constant throughout. Their brother Tad Kinchla (bass) and Ben Wilson (keyboards) joined in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

Perhaps best known for their 1994 hit “Run-Around,” Blues Traveler gained widespread popularity and recognition with this infectious track that showcased Popper’s harmonica prowess and the band’s tight, energetic musicianship. The song, which is featured on their fourth studio album, “Four,” received heavy airplay on both radio and television throughout the 90s, making it one of their most successful and enduring songs till date.

Allow me to take a step back and highlight a few potential drawbacks, as any seasoned music critic must. One could argue that Blues Traveler, like many bands from their era, fell prey to the dreaded “one-hit wonder” curse. While “Run-Around” continues to be their most recognizable tune, they never quite managed to surpass or even replicate its chart-topping success. However, true fans of the band will argue that their extensive discography, featuring more than a dozen albums, is packed with hidden gems and fan favorites.

Despite any perceived shortcomings, Blues Traveler’s accomplishments cannot be denied. Their song “Run-Around” won them a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1996, and the band has sold millions of albums worldwide. Additionally, they have cultivated a loyal fan base through their electrifying live performances and have been a staple on the festival circuit for decades.

In conclusion, while Blues Traveler may not have consistently dominated the charts, their impact on the rock scene and their impressive musicianship – particularly John Popper’s harmonica virtuosity – have earned them a lasting legacy. “Run-Around” serves as a testament to the band’s unique sound and their ability to craft infectiously catchy tunes, and it continues to resonate with fans both old and new.

Charting the Success of a Catchy Tune

“run-around” harmonica magic: blues traveler’s catchy tune skyrockets to chart history, earning accolades and grammy gold..

“Run-Around” was released on February 28, 1995, as the lead single from Blues Traveler’s fourth album, Four. With its infectious harmonica riff and memorable chorus, the song quickly gained traction and found its way up the US Billboard charts.

Initially, “Run-Around” made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at position 92 on April 29, 1995. But it didn’t take long for the song’s popularity to grow, as it steadily climbed the charts over the following months. Its peak position on the Hot 100 was at number 8, which it achieved on August 19, 1995. This accomplishment marked Blues Traveler’s first and only top 10 hit on the Hot 100.

In addition to its Hot 100 success, “Run-Around” also dominated the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart. The song peaked at number 2 on this chart and held the position for six non-consecutive weeks, showcasing its appeal to a broader audience. Meanwhile, it also made its way up the Mainstream Top 40 chart, reaching a peak position of 20.

The song’s chart performance was also notable for its longevity. “Run-Around” spent a total of 49 weeks on the Hot 100 chart, a testament to its enduring popularity. Furthermore, at the time, the song set the record for the longest-charting single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, remaining on the chart for an impressive 54 weeks.

As far as chart trivia goes, “Run-Around” was the fastest-charting song by a new Warner Bros. artist at the time since Madonna ’s “Like a Virgin” in 1984, an impressive feat for Blues Traveler. Its success also helped the band secure a Grammy award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1996.

All in all, “Run-Around” was a massive success for Blues Traveler, propelling them to new heights in the music industry and solidifying their place in the annals of chart history.

Dissecting the Lyrics of a 90s Classic

Like a game show contestant with a parting gift I could not believe my eyes When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend Who needs to humor me and tell me lies Yeah, humor me and tell me lies

And I’ll lie too and say I don’t mind And as we seek so shall we find And when you’re feeling open I’ll still be here But not without a certain degree of fear Of what will be with you and me I still can see things hopefully

But you Why you wanna give me a run-around Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up When all it does is slow me down

And shake me and my confidence About a great many things But I’ve been there I can see it cower Like a nervous magician waiting in the wings

Of a bad play where the heroes are right And nobody thinks or expects too much And Hollywood’s calling for the movie rights Singing, “Hey babe, let’s keep in touch” Hey baby, let’s keep in touch

But I want more than a touch I want you to reach me And show me all the things no one else can see So what you feel becomes mine as well And soon if we’re lucky we’d be unable to tell

What’s yours and mine the fishing’s fine And it doesn’t have to rhyme so don’t you feed me a line

“Run-Around” by Blues Traveler is a song that encapsulates the spirit of the ’90s with its catchy melody and introspective lyrics. Released in 1994 as part of their fourth album, “Four,” this song struck a chord with listeners as it delved into themes of love and trust in relationships.

The opening verse, with a nod to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” sets a somber tone by describing the weight of a midnight phone call and the lies told by a trusted friend. This theme of deceit continues throughout the song, highlighting the struggle of wanting to trust and believe in the person you’re with, yet feeling betrayed by their actions.

However, the chorus offers a glimpse of hope and resilience . The singer questions why their partner is giving them a “run-around” and whether it’s meant to speed things up or slow them down in their relationship. This uncertainty, while frustrating, also showcases the desire to work through challenges and grow together.

The lyrics also depict a longing for a deeper connection and understanding, as shown in the lines “I want more than a touch, I want you to reach me / And show me all the things no one else can see.” This desire for true intimacy resonated with listeners who found solace in the song’s honest and raw portrayal of love and relationships during the ’90s.

In an era marked by significant social and political changes, “Run-Around” reflected the personal struggles and emotional complexities faced by many during that time. The song’s lyrics, woven together with Blues Traveler’s signature harmonica-driven sound and John Popper’s soulful voice, made it a memorable and enduring hit in the ’90s music scene.

A Visual Feast: The Magic Behind the “Run-Around” Music Video

Dive into the whimsical world of blues traveler’s “run-around” music video, an enchanting blend of live-action and stop-motion magic that stands the test of time..

Blues Traveler’s iconic song, “Run-Around,” is complemented by an equally enchanting music video that has become as memorable as the song itself. Directed by the highly talented and versatile Ken Fox, the magic-infused video features the band performing while trapped inside a diorama box, with the camera panning to reveal a mix of live-action and stop-motion animation.

The production of the music video was an intricate process involving an inventive and creative approach to storytelling. In a nod to the Wizard of Oz, the video opens in black and white, with the diorama box being set up in a dusty attic. It swiftly transitions into a vivid and colorful display once the music kicks in, bringing the diorama to life. A fascinating blend of mediums, the video showcases the band members interacting seamlessly with the stop-motion animations, creating a sense of wonder and delight.

One of the noteworthy aspects of the “Run-Around” music video is its budget, which is estimated to be around $140,000. While this may not seem like a massive amount by today’s standards, it was quite a significant investment during the mid-90s. The result is a visually stunning and engaging video that has stood the test of time.

Throughout the video, viewers are treated to a variety of whimsical and eccentric characters, such as a fire-breathing dragon, a dancing skeleton, and even Blues Traveler’s frontman, John Popper, appearing as a wizard. The combination of these elements creates a fantastical world that draws the audience in and perfectly mirrors the energetic and lively nature of the song.

Over the years, the “Run-Around” music video has garnered a cult following, inspiring fans to create their own tributes and interpretations. Various YouTube videos showcase fans’ creative takes on the concept, further solidifying the song’s status as a beloved classic.

In summary, the “Run-Around” music video stands out as a timeless and captivating visual accompaniment to Blues Traveler’s hit song. With its enchanting fusion of live-action and stop-motion animation, the video continues to capture the imagination of viewers and remains an integral part of the track’s enduring appeal.

The Mastermind Behind “Run-Around”: John Popper

John Popper, the lead vocalist and harmonica player of Blues Traveler, is also the talented composer behind the band’s biggest hit, “Run-Around.” With an innate gift for combining catchy melodies and engaging lyrics, Popper has established himself as a prominent figure in the world of blues and rock music. In addition to “Run-Around,” John Popper has composed a plethora of Blues Traveler’s memorable tunes, such as “Hook,” “But Anyway,” and “Carolina Blues.” Throughout his successful career, Popper’s compositions have consistently showcased his ability to captivate audiences with his storytelling and musicianship, making him an influential force in the music landscape.

Awards, Accolades, and Cultural Impact

“run-around”: a ’90s grammy-winning classic transcending generations through heartfelt lyrics, infectious melodies, and its mark on tv, film, and gaming – the quintessential blues traveler anthem..

“Run-Around” has garnered much recognition and praise in the music industry over the years. Released in 1994, as part of Blues Traveler’s fourth studio album titled “Four,” the song skyrocketed to fame, cementing its place as one of the quintessential records of the ’90s. The catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics struck a chord with listeners worldwide, earning the song the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1996.

The song’s popularity extended well beyond the realm of music. It made its mark in various forms of media, making appearances in television, movies, and video games. “Run-Around” was prominently featured in the 1996 film “Kingpin,” starring Woody Harrelson, and Randy Quaid. The song’s infectious guitar riffs and harmonica solos provided the perfect backdrop for the film’s themes of friendship and redemption.

In the realm of television, “Run-Around” was used in the hit ’90s sitcom “Friends” in the season 2 episode titled “The One With The Baby On The Bus.” The song’s upbeat tempo and playful lyrics added a sense of fun and spontaneity to the beloved show, further highlighting the band’s versatility and broad appeal.

Furthermore, the song has also made its way into the world of video games. It was included in the popular Guitar Hero franchise, giving players the chance to relive the magic of this timeless classic by jamming along to the iconic guitar and harmonica parts that John Popper so effortlessly brought to life.

As with many popular songs, “Run-Around” has inspired a slew of cover versions over the years. These renditions span a variety of genres and showcase the song’s adaptability and enduring charm. A notable 2019 cover by the band Hootie & The Blowfish stands out as a favorite, with Darius Rucker’s smooth vocals blending seamlessly with the song’s signature harmonica riff, giving it a fresh and modern twist.

Over the years, “Run-Around” has continued to resonate with audiences, solidifying its status as a timeless classic that transcends generations. Its numerous accolades, media appearances, and cover versions serve as a testament to the enduring appeal and impact of this unforgettable Blues Traveler hit.

Diving into the Musical Structure

“Run-Around,” a classic track by Blues Traveler, showcases the band’s signature sound and musical prowess. Delving into the song’s structure, we can pick apart its various components and better understand the elements that contribute to its enduring appeal.

One of the first things to note about “Run-Around” is that it’s written in the key of G Major. The harmonic structure of the song predominantly revolves around the chords G, C, and D, which are the I, IV, and V chords within the key. These chords provide a strong sense of resolution and contribute to the song’s catchy and upbeat nature.

Throughout the verses, the song follows a chord progression of G-C-D-G, which creates a sense of familiarity and allows the listener to easily follow along. The chorus, in contrast, introduces an interesting variation to the chord progression, moving from G to D to C and back to G, which adds a sense of freshness and variety to the overall structure. This subtle change in the chord progression helps drive home the impact of the chorus and makes it more memorable.

As for tempo, “Run-Around” clocks in at a moderate pace, with a tempo of around 152 BPM (beats per minute). This tempo places the song in a sweet spot for listeners, as it’s not too slow to be considered a ballad, but not too fast to be a full-blown dance track. The moderate tempo allows the band to showcase their musicianship while still maintaining an accessible and radio-friendly sound.

The song’s arrangement features a mix of instruments that complement each other nicely, with the harmonica taking the lead in the intro and instrumental breaks, and the guitar driving the rhythm throughout. The bass and drums provide a solid foundation for the other instruments to build upon, while the keyboard adds a layer of depth and harmony. The tight interplay between these instruments creates a rich and dynamic sound that’s instantly recognizable as Blues Traveler’s signature style.

Another noteworthy aspect of “Run-Around” is its use of dynamics. The song starts off relatively mellow, with the harmonica and guitar gently introducing the main melody. As the song progresses, the band gradually builds up the energy, culminating in an explosive harmonica solo that’s a testament to John Popper’s virtuosity. This dynamic contrast is a key component of the song’s structure and contributes to its engaging and entertaining nature.

In conclusion, “Run-Around” by Blues Traveler boasts a well-crafted musical structure that expertly combines chord progressions, tempo, arrangement, and dynamics to create a memorable and enjoyable listening experience. This classic track is a shining example of the band’s musical talents and serves as a testament to their enduring appeal in the world of rock and blues music.

'We love anything funky': Blues Traveler happy to be back on Cohasset's spinning stage

During Blues Traveler’s formative years, as college students playing bars in New York City, the musicians were happy to have friends and other musicians join them onstage. Having people sit in and jam for a tune or two was just a normal part of the scene.

Now with its latest album, “Traveler’s Blues,” released July 30, the band has gone back to that idea, and stylistically gone back to its roots in the blues. The album’s 11 songs feature an eclectic list of guests, from rock singer Crystal Bowersox to soul duo The War and Treaty, to blues-rock icon Warren Haynes, jazz guitarist John Scofield, blues singer Keb Mo, jazz singer Rita Wilson and fast-rising blues phenom Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.

Blues Traveler’s 31-date national tour will swing through New England this week, headlining the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on Friday night, playing the Hampton Beach Casino on Saturday night, and then performing at the Cape Cod Melody Tent on Sunday night. The tour is a double-header, since it also includes soul-funk group J.J. Grey and Mofro.

Blues Traveler had its origins in the mid-1980s in Princeton, New Jersey, where high school pals John Popper and drummer Brendan Hill began jamming on old blues tunes. They recruited a football player, Chan Kinchla, to play guitar, and soon added bassist Bobby Sheehan, and began getting gigs.

Within a few years, the quartet was all attending college in Manhattan, Kinchla at NYU, and the other three at The New School, while also playing gigs as many nights as possible. When they were offered a record contract in 1990, the guys dropped out of college and began a run that would make them one of the biggest acts in the 1990s.

Those '90s heydays

Eventually Blues Traveler’s first three albums would go gold, but it was their “Four” album in 1994 that really propelled them into rock’s top rank. It went six-times platinum, won them a Grammy, and contained the massive single hit “Run-Around.”

Despite the name, Blues Traveler never really did straight blues, but a jam band blend of rock and soul, funk and jazzy improvisation. By that time Ben Wilson had joined on keyboards, with Popper on vocals and harmonica, Kinchla on guitar, Sheehan on bass and Hill on drums.

1998’s “Straight on ‘Til Morning” also went platinum and continued the band’s string of success. In the early 1990s the band was the driving force behind the multi-act H.O.R.D.E. Tours (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) that brought together bands in all kinds of disparate styles, united by their love of jamming and cross-pollination.

Things began to get difficult as the decade wound down. Sheehan died of a drug overdose in 1999. Popper had some health issues and had to step away from touring for a while after heart surgery. Chad’s brother, Tad Kinchla, took over on bass, and once Popper recovered the band continued to tour. But as record companies began restructuring and falling apart, Blues Traveler was jettisoned from A&M Records and shifted to a series of smaller, independent labels.

Blues Traveler had just released its last studio album in 2018 and like many other bands had a full slate of concerts scheduled for 2020 before the pandemic put everything on hiatus. In some ways, the new album was almost a signature pandemic work, something the band had always wanted to do and finally had the time to put together.

“That was the kind of music world we came from,” said Chan Kinchla last week from an Atlantic City tour stop. “Playing in New York City around 1987, we played all over the Lower East Side from ’87 to ’89. At that time, they had a cabaret law that you could only have three in a band, so every little bar had music. It could be blues, jazz, funk or whatever, but everyone sat in with everybody else and would just hang out. We had a great many conversations about doing something like this album. It just seemed like the natural next phase."

'Traveler's Blues'

“Like everyone else, at the beginning of the lockdowns, we thought we’d be out a couple months at most and then out touring again in the summer,” Kinchla said. “As it turned out, we had all this time on our hands. We had spent over a decade saying we needed to make a blues record and had the idea but never followed through. We were lucky to be connected to Round Hill Records and began looking through their huge catalog of music. All through last September/October we put it together and drafted our plans.”

Blues Traveler secured producer Matt Rollings for the project and headed down to Nashville to record in late 2020.

“Arranging for all the guests was a collaborative effort,” Kinchla said. “We had a huge list we reached out to. There were some problems with logistics and COVID protocols, but when we got in the studio Matt kept it as straight up as possible. Blues works best with as little fluff as possible and when we got all the tracks done, with these guests, hearing them was like Christmas morning.”

The most notable cut for jamband fans will be the old classic “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” with Haynes adding his trademark guitar mastery.

“We met Warren way back in 1990, when we opened for the Allman Brothers Band for a couple of summers,” said Kinchla. “And then Gov’t Mule played on the H.O.R.D.E. Tour a bunch. He’s an amazing player and I’m in awe of what he does there.”

The first single off the new album is a smart reworking of the pop hit “Crazy,” with Scofield’s guitar adding some jazzy excursions while Rita Wilson (aka Mrs. Tom Hanks) trades vocals with Popper in a jazzy-blues style. It is a striking track, but begs the question of how hard it is to duplicate on tour without the guests.

“ 'Crazy’ was Matt Rollings’ idea, that among all these blues songs, we ought to include a little diversion with a more contemporary pop tune,” Kinchla explained. “This version gives it a little more depth and takes it in more of a rhythm-and-blues direction."

One standout track is definitely “Roadhouse Blues,” the old Doors chestnut, which features guest Mickey Raphael, best known for his decades playing harmonica in Willie Nelson’s band. Popper and Raphael turn the song into a sizzling blues harp blowout.

“That Doors song is interesting,” said Kinchla. “As kids of the ‘80s, we were always listening to classic rock radio. That’s why so many cool jam bands come out of that era. While we try to re-interpret some of the songs here, with that one we tried to stick to the original because it’s such a great vehicle for guys like John and Mickey to jam on.”

Big Mama Thornton’s old classic “Ball and Chain” gets updated with "Kingfish" Ingram on guitar.

“I stole a lot of his riffs,” said Kinchla, laughing. “It was just good to get back on track with a real blues feel there. He’s just an awesome young guitar player.”

JJ Grey joins tour

The co-headlining tour with JJ Grey and Mofro seems like a natural, and there could be some jamming between the two bands. And Blues Traveler is eager to get back to the summer tents too.

“This is a great pairing with JJ,” said Kinchla. “We expect to be doing some collaborating later on. We’re going to try some tonight in Atlantic City with their horns. And are those tent stages in Massachusetts still rotating? There are only a couple of those stages left in the country, and they seem to be bunched in New England, but we just love anything funky like that.”

Blues Traveler & Big Head Todd and the Monsters Team Up for Epic Co-Headline Summer Tour

Article contributed by dmk publicity | published on tuesday, april 2, 2024.

blues traveler tour history

After a highly-successful run last summer, Grammy® Award-winning artist Blues Traveler and Platinum-Selling rockers Big Head Todd and the Monsters have announced that they are, once again, bringing the “Blue Monsters Tour” to venues across the country. Featuring an arsenal of songs from over three decades, including both the smash hits that defined their careers as well as rarely performed live gems, the coveted co-headline tour was hailed as one of the best of the 2023 season by critics and fans alike.

The “Blue Monsters Tour 2024” routing kicks off July 30 at MAD Amphitheater in El Dorado, AR and will hit the Midwest and East Coast before culminating August 24 at the Univest Performance Center in Quakertown, PA.

Tickets for “Blue Monsters Tour 2024” go on sale Friday, April 5 at 10 AM local time at https://bluestraveler.com .

Long-time touring partners, the two iconic bands first performed together in 1993 for the H.O.R.D.E Tour, and have spent the past 30 years on many of the same bills. In addition to the 1994, 1997, and 2015 H.O.R.D.E. Tours, they were also part of the A-list lineups for the 2001 “Moondance Jam,” the 2002 “One World, One Heart Festival,” the 2012 “Last Summer on Earth Tour,” and the 2019 “BeachLife Festival.” Through these experiences, the groups have forged a friendship that transcends both time and music.

Multi-Platinum-Selling Band Blues Traveler currently has 15 hit studio albums to their credit, including the iconic four, which went six-times Platinum and spawned the definitive “Run-Around” (garnering their first Grammy® Award), as well as Traveler’s Soul, which was released in October 2023. Traveler’s Soul was Blues Traveler’s second critically-acclaimed album of genre covers, featuring their interpretations of classic Soul and R&B hits originally recorded by artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Impressions, TLC, The Meters, Dr. John, Ann Peebles, and more. This record followed the wildly successful Traveler’s Blues release (Round Hill Records/ Black Hill Records, 2021), spotlighting the band’s renditions of songs from The American Blues Songbook and earning them a Grammy nod for “Best Traditional Blues Album.”

During the “Blue Monsters Tour 2024,” audiences can expect to hear all of Blues Traveler’s hits, including their Billboard-topping smash singles like “Hook” and “But Anyway,” as well as fan- and band-favorites from throughout their catalog.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters, have dedicated 40 years to their music career. Quietly becoming an American institution in this time– thanks to their writing, recording, and touring (totaling over 3,500 performances, countless sold out shows in amphitheaters, on the high seas, and even beaming their tunes to outer space (literally)) –they have earned the endorsement of everyone from Robert Plant to The Denver Broncos, and tallied tens of millions of streams.

The group also has 13 studio albums to their credit, including the 1993 breakout Sister Sweetly. Powered by staples like “Broken Hearted Savior,” “It’s Alright,” and “Bittersweet,” the record eventually went Platinum, leading to a support slot for Plant on tour. During the “Blue Monsters Tour 2024,” fans can expect to hear these hits plus many more.

Blues Traveler Unveil 2023 Tour Dates, Detail New Album ‘Live and Acoustic Fall of 1997’

Blues Traveler Unveil 2023 Tour Dates, Detail New Album ‘Live and Acoustic Fall of 1997’

Blues Traveler has announced they’ll set out on a 2023 tour in conjunction with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated album, Live and Acoustic Fall of 1997 .

The tour will kick off on April 25 at the Fox Theatre in Hutchinson, Kan., and conclude on May 24 at the Flying Monkey in Plymouth, N.H. During their travels, the band will play at beautiful theaters like the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, N.Y. and more.

This announcement follows the success of the band’s 35th-anniversary tour. Fans can anticipate performances of the hits from the 14-album collection that defined Blues Traveler as six-time Platinum rockers.

The exclusive double LP will feature performances of the only Blues Traveler live acoustic sets. Blues Traveler intertwined acoustic performances between electric sets during their fall 1997 tour, which was inspired by the band’s successful acoustic performance at Neil Young’s Bridge School benefit .

“This EXCLUSIVE limited-edition double LP is a selection of many of the highlights from our legendary 1997 fall tour that produced the only acoustic sets that the original line up of Blues Traveler, including our beloved friend and bassist, Bobby Sheehan ever played on tour,” said Blues Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla in a press release. “These previously unheard and uncirculated tracks are remastered from the original 2-track soundboard recordings for the ultimate Blues Traveler live and acoustic experience.”

Notably, Live and Acoustic Fall of 1997 will include classics such as “Run-Around,” “But Anyway,” “The Mountains Win Again,” and other deeper cuts on a limited edition colored vinyl.

Pre-order the album via Experience Vinyl here .

Tickets for the 2023 tour will be released Friday, Jan. 27, via Blues Traveler’s website. Learn more and find tickets here .

Blues Traveler

The Blues Traveler show originally scheduled for April 30 has been rescheduled for November 21. Please hold on to your tickets as they will be valid for the new date.  Please reach out to point of purchase with any questions or concerns.

30 years ago, the four original members of Blues Traveler, who had known each other since their early teens -- John Popper, Chandler Kinchla, the late Bobby Sheehan and Brendan Hill -- gathered in the basement of their drummer's parents' Princeton, NJ, home and the seeds were planted for a band who has released a total of 13 studio albums, four of which have gone gold, three platinum and one six-times platinum. Over the course of its illustrious career, Blues Traveler has sold more than 10 million combined units worldwide, played over 2,000 live shows in front of more than 30 million people, and, in "Run-Around," had the longest-charting radio single in Billboard history, which earned them a Grammy® for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Their movie credits include Blues Brothers 2000, Kingpin, Wildflowers and others. A television favorite, they have been featured on Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, VH1's Behind the Music and they hold the record for the most appearances of any artist on The Late Show with David Letterman. "We started this whole adventure as a team," says Brendan Hill. "We've taken every step of this as a group together, from the basement to moving to New York, getting signed, hiring a manager, to achieving all our goals." "I'm a firm believer that rock and roll keeps you young," adds co-founding member Chan Kinchla. "Because I don't feel any different than I did when we started, even though I've got a wife, two kids and all kind of life in between. We still go back to that mentality we had as kids, smoking pot and learning to jam. We had our first epiphanies about music together. This is a real family affair." "The way the songs have held up moves me," admits legendary frontman Popper, who has gotten down to a svelte 280 from a high of 436 after a gastric bypass 10 years ago, which he admits saved his life. "We've really got nothing but love from our audience. If something has quality, it's constantly reconsidered through the ages. And that's what we're doing this for... posterity. We've never been 25 before, so having this kind of retrospective, as songwriters, it's an opportunity for long forgotten songs get their day in court." From the suburbs of New Jersey, Blues Traveler moved to New York in the late '80s, where they became part of a jam-band scene that packed clubs like Nightingale's, McGoverns and Kenny's Castaways, where they would share the bill with Spin Doctors and Phish. Represented early on by Bill Graham and son David, Blues Traveler's live reputation led to a deal with A&M Records, for whom they released their self-titled debut, which produced songs like the hit "But Anyway," "Gina" and "100 Years," eventually going gold simultaneously with the album Four. The following year came Travelers & Thieves, also now gold, with songs like "What's For Breakfast." The subsequent gold release Save His Soul followed in 1993, with songs like "N.Y. Prophesie," whose lyrics were actually co-written by John's Hungarian father, Robert. The recording, and resulting tour, was marked by Popper having to sing from a wheelchair, the result of a motorcycle accident that almost took his life and destroyed the band, which led to a deeper investment from A&M to help support the band during a mettle-testing period in their career. The band's Four, released in 1994, was a watershed moment for the group, eventually selling more than six million albums on the strength of the singles "Run-Around" and "Hook." "The fact we had that success in the middle of our career, rather than early on, was beneficial because it opened doors to a whole new audience that we continue to court today," says Hill. The band's next album, the now-platinum Straight on till Morning, released in 1997, produced the memorable "Carolina Blues," a longtime staple of Blues Traveler's live show. After that, tragedy struck when bassist Bobby Sheehan was found dead in New Orleans on August 20, 1999, at the age of 31. It was a wake-up call for Popper, who vowed to lose his extra weight after help from friends like Howard Stern and Roseanne Barr. Deciding to soldier on, the group brought in Chan's brother Tad to replace Sheehan on bass and, at the same time, enlisted keyboardist Ben Wilson. "I kind of vicariously grew up around the band," says Tad, four years younger than his older brother. "I saw all the trials and tribulations moving forward, and then lightning striking." "They wanted to bring in someone who could be part of the band," recalls Wilson. "They wanted keyboard to play a little bit more of a part of the sound. Apparently, Bobby had always wanted to have a keyboard player in the band. So adding me was a bit of a nod to him." The transition took place in 2001 on the aptly named studio album Bridge, the band's last for major label group Interscope Geffen A&M, on songs like "Back in the Day" and "Girl Inside My Head." "That was us looking back," admits Popper. "It was the end of an era. We wanted to call it 'Bridge Out of Brooklyn' as an homage to Bobby, but we decided to talk about where the bridge was going rather than where it was coming from." Truth Be Told, recorded in Ojai and Santa Barbara, CA, followed in 2003 on the Sanctuary label and proved a fun experience for the band as they explored their more pop side on songs like Tad's "Let Her and Let Go" and "Unable to Get Free," both represented on this compilation. Bastardos, produced by former Wilco member Jay Bennett for the Vanguard label, featured "Amber Awaits," Popper's ode to one of several New England Patriots cheerleaders with whom he fell in love while on a USO Tour of Iraq and Afghanistan. North Hollywood Shootout, recorded in 2008 and released on Verve Forecast, produces a pair of tracks for the collection, Chan Kinchla's Led Zeppelin-esque "Remember It" and Wilson's "You, Me and Everything." Currently putting the finishing touches on their tenth studio album -- the first to feature outside songwriters in addition to the band members' contributions -- the group is taking the opportunity of their milestone to not just look behind, but ahead. "We intend to keep going as long as they pay us," laughs Popper, resplendent in bathrobe, Simpsons pajamas and Samurai sword dangling from a belt loop. "We're going to be in everybody's face this year. I feel like I'm in my prime. I was convinced I'd be dead at 37." "We're brothers," concludes Chan. "We're not done. We've got a few more swings left, some more damage to do. I'm sure we bug the shit out of one another at times, but it's an honor to play onstage with these guys. They are awesome musicians. You have to keep touch with that. And never forget it." Still alive and kicking, Blues Traveler prepares for the next 25 years, with a comprehensive overview of the first, in one deluxe package.
