Bimini Cruise Port: Everything You Need To Know

Picture of Doug Parker

A new port joins Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, giving cruisers more of a selection when choosing a Bahamian itinerary.

In July 2021, Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port welcomed its first cruise ship when  Crystal Serenity  docked with cruise passengers. Four days later, Carnival Cruise Line made its first call there with Carnival Horizon.

Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port

Located 55 nautical miles off the coast of Miami, the Bimini Islands is primarily a beach destination with some added history tours sprinkled in. With a total population of under 2,000 people living there, it’s practically untouched, with the exception of a few resorts.

Bimini is actually made up of two islands, North and South Bimini. The cruise port is on North Bimini, and the airport is on South Bimini. You can take a quick ride between the two islands with the local ferry service at $8 per person each way.

Bimini Distance from Miami

The island is 62 miles south of Grand Bahama Island, 127 miles northwest of Nassau, 77 miles from West Palm Beach, and 58 miles from Port Everglades.

This island was called Virgin Voyages’ private resort destination . However, Virgin is only utilizing a beach and beach club on Bimini, which is open to other cruise passengers when a Virgin ship is not there.

Pier Location

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that can now hold the largest cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels (225,000 gross tons).

The ship docks in East Bimini. The pier was originally built for the now-defunct Bimini Superfast but was recently expanded to accommodate the world’s largest cruise vessels.

There’s a charm to the pier because it’s so new to major cruise lines, and it hasn’t been developed or overrun by Caribbean staple shops like Diamonds International.

Aside from cruise ships, high-speed ferry service from Balearia Caribbean also makes stops there, running routes from Fort Lauderdale to North Bimini Island.

Balearia Caribbean at North Bimini

Being right off the coast of South Florida, there isn’t much difference in the weather. You can expect the same weather as you would in Miami, Florida (so pack shorts!).

The temperatures range from around 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the dead of summer. Even with the humidity, the breeze off the ocean tends to make it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures average between 77 degrees in the winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Legal tender is the Bahamian dollar ($BSD), but US currency is accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas. If paying in cash, make sure to confirm you’re getting a change in US currency.

There are ATM machines around the resorts, but expect to pay a steep service fee to access them. Credit cards and digital payments are also accepted at most locations on the island, especially at the large resorts.

Getting Around

Even though the island is only seven miles long, you may want to find a way to get around.

A Resorts Worlds tram service makes select stops around the island and operates every 30 minutes. These trams have marked pick-up locations and will take you to different Resorts World properties from the cruise ship. (Note: they only operate between Resorts World properties.)

Anyone can use the Resorts World tram. Just keep in mind it will take you to one of their properties where you can go to a casino, beach, or eat.

bimini bahamas resorts world tram

Taxi rates will vary by where you want to go, but the common fare was $5 per person to most locations. The cruise pier is at the midway point of the island, so it’s equal distance to both the northern and southern areas.

By Golf Cart

A couple of golf cart rental companies on the island charge around $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 per day for a six-seater. With little traffic on the island, it’s an easy and stress-free way to explore on your own timetable.

If you’re sticking close to the pier, you can obviously walk to your destination. The Resorts World Hilton is about a 10-minute walk from the ship.

To explore beyond that, however, you’ll want to find a form of transportation — if only because of the heat!

golf cart rental

As I mentioned earlier, one charm of Bimini is that it hasn’t been overdeveloped, especially when it comes to the area around the pier. As it becomes more popular in the coming years, that’s likely to change, but for now, it’s one of the things that makes this port so appealing.

A small market with a few shops is just south of the cruise pier. Otherwise, you’re limited to shopping at one of the Resorts World properties if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir.

While shopping for basic necessities, keep in mind that you are on an island with limited resources, so items in the resort gift shops tend to be on the pricey side as they all have to be imported from the mainland.

What To Do in Bimini

Cruise ship at Bimini

Bimini is primarily a beach destination that focuses on water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with sharks, and jet skiing.

If you want to explore on your own, you can rent a golf cart or set out with food (and plenty of water to stay hydrated) and explore the island.

Cruise lines offer around a dozen shore excursions in Bimini, but if you’re looking for something a little different, we’ve listed some things to do in the area. If this is your first time visiting Bimini, here are some suggestions.

Local Beaches

Some of the quietest and best beaches in Bimini run together on the southwestern side of the island in Alice Town: Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill.

There is also a string of beaches north of the resort area’s cruise port. Keep in mind that you’ll be required to pay a fee if you’d like to use a sun chair, resort facilities, pool, or a lounger.

Beach Club 360

Typically sold by the cruise line, this new private beach package is good if you’re looking to spend a day at the beach. Located right next to Resorts World Bimini Beach, the stretch of beach has some of the clearest turquoise waters in the Bahamas.

The club has options to rent cabanas, umbrellas, and beach chairs. The price of varies depending on your cruise line and which add-ons you’d like. This premium beachfront complex has two lagoon pools, swim-up bars, DJs playing music, and plenty of beachfront property.

Beach Club 360

Explore a Shipwreck

You can set up a trip out to the SS Sapona wreck through one of the resorts. The World War I ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926 and has remained ever since. The artificial reef is filled with sea life. This can be booked at Resorts World or in advance.

Historic Attractions

Bimini’s rich history is seen throughout the island, like the SS Sapona wreck we mentioned. You can explore some of the local histories at Bimini Museum, where you’ll learn about some of the famous folks who’ve made the island their home over the years (including former resident Ernest Hemingway).

There is no charge to enter the museum, but they do take donations.

Also relatively close to the pier is Dolphin House Museum, a three-story home made entirely out of recycled materials, including many items that washed up on the shore.

SS Sapona shipwreck bimini bahamas

If you’re a shark or marine life lover, you’ll love Bimini. Since the waters of the Bahamas are so warm, the Bimini Biological Field Station has a shark lab set up.

Visitors can sign up for a tour of the station and even participate in research or adopt a shark. And in case you’re concerned, the area is filled with lemon sharks, which aren’t aggressive and have zero recorded fatalities against humans.

(Note: The Shark Lab is currently closed because of the pandemic, but you can sign up for expeditions.)

You will be required to take a one-mile ferry ride to South Bimini to explore the Shark Lab.

Local Food and Drink Favorites

The local food favorite is the conch. You can order it prepared in a variety of ways, the most popular being fried conch fritters or ceviche. Conch can be ordered from almost any restaurant that serves seafood, and even a couple of roadside stands serve up this marine mollusk.

In speaking with the locals, there are two popular drinks that Bimini serves, Goombay Smash (four different types of rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice) and Rum Runners (assorted fruit juices, banana liquor, rum, and grenadine), which were made famous by the illegal smuggling of rum between Miami and Bimini.

bimini bahamas bar cocktails

Final Thoughts

Except for Carnival Corporation’s Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Bimini has the clearest and cleanest waters of any place where cruise ships stop in the region.

We did the Beach Club package ($64.99 per person through the cruise line) during our recent visit, spending the day going back and forth between the lagoon swimming pools and the beach.

The tram service was complimentary and took us directly from the beach to the cruise ship. The roads are bumpy, so hold tight when on the tram.

Overall, it was a memorable experience that I’d book again on another cruise to Bimini.

Bimini Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Robert Marmion

Bimini is a new port in the Bahamas that should quickly become a favorite of cruisers for its easy access to beaches and activities. There are however a few tricks to getting the most for your money in Bimini.

Arrival at the Pier in Bimini Bahamas

Your ship will dock at the pier and you’ll be able to walk right into the port. It is a flat and wide pier, with plenty of room for all passengers.

Bimini Bahamas Pier

At the end of the pier you’ll come to a parking lot that acts as a pickup station for the island tram, which is run by Resorts World. The tram is free and will take you to most of the Resorts World properties and activities. You should plan on riding the tram.

Bimini Resorts World tram

You could also walk across the bridge into town for direct access to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rentals, and taxis, but the tram also stops at Kayak Beach and Fisherman’s village. Unless you really just like walking in the heat, take the tram to one of those stops if you are wanting to go there.

Many people were making that walk, likely because it looks like the tram is only for passengers on shore excursions, but we confirmed with staff that it is free for everyone.

Kayak Beach Bimini

Kayak Beach Bimini

The first stop on the tram is Kayak Beach. The water here is not as good as the upcoming beaches, and there is no reason to get off here unless you just want to get to the beach as quickly as possible. You could also pick up a taxi at this stop. As noted by the lack of people in the picture, there are better beaches to come!

Fisherman’s Village

Bimini Fisherman's Village

The 2nd tram stop is Fisherman’s Village, which is mostly shopping. If you’d like to get a few gifts from the Bimini Cruise Port, this is the place to do it.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

The third stop for the tram is Resorts World Bimini Beach. We booked a shore excursion, which is basically a day pass to the resort for $39 on our cruise ship. Included in that price was a welcome drink, but no lunch. Many people will get off at this stop as it is the same stop as Beach 360.

bimini cruise dock

Resorts World is amazing, with crystal clear water and resort style pools, food and restrooms. It is everything you could ask for in a day at the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas were provided by the pool at no cost and there was no trouble finding an open spot as the resort is large.

If you are looking for the best beach and want access to facilities, this is the place you should go.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

There was an option on our cruise to book the resort with lunch included for an extra $25. The price seemed high and this was confirmed by looking at the menu once we got there. All meals were $15, so it was a $10 markup by the cruise ship on lunch. Skip the included lunch and just buy what you would like when you get there.

Bimini Beach Lunch Menu

Resorts World Bimini Beach has two resort style pools, one for adults only and one for families. We found neither to be crowded and there were great places to sit all around.

Resorts World Bimini Pool

Another option you might be tempted by is the pool cabana. These seemed like they were really overpriced at $399, we didn’t see anyone in them the entire time we were there.

Your excursion will include a welcome drink, and you do need to pick it up on arrival, but don’t get too excited about it. The voucher is not good for any drink you want at the bar.

bimini cruise dock

Bimini Cruise Port Best Free Beach

The best free option is Paradise Beach, which is located directly next to the Resorts World Beach. In fact while at Resorts World Bimini Beach we walked up to Paradise Beach because it was much less crowded.

Paradise Beach Bimini

To reach Paradise Beach, get off at the stop after Resorts World. You’ll have access to a free beautiful beach, and food trucks, but no resort amenities. The main downfall to this beach is there is nowhere to wash off the saltwater after going in the water, but an excursion here would be completely free.

Our cruise was offering an excursion to Paradise Beach with a snorkel for $75 per person. The beach and tram are free though, so you are basically renting a snorkel for $75!

Where you go on Bimini will come down to if you want restrooms and a resort freshwater pool, and if you are willing to pay $39 for that. If you want that, go to Resorts World Bimini Beach, if not, go to Paradise Beach for free.

Resorts World Casino

On the way back to the ship the tram will stop at Resorts World Casino (and Fisherman’s Village again). Get off here if you’d like to play in a casino during your Bimini Cruise Port stop.

Bimini Cruise Port

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that accommodates the world’s largest cruise ships and vessels of all sizes. The cruise port is within walking distance of the Resorts World Bimini Complex.

Since this is a newer cruise port, the pier is charming and less developed. Unlike other Caribbean cruise destinations, which house popular cruise port shops including Diamonds International, this isn’t the case with Bimini. Instead, there are local shops to purchase souvenirs and crafts.

Bimini cruise port can accommodate two cruise ships at a time, making this island a nice change from busier ports of call. Cruise passengers can take a taxi, a shuttle service, or use a tour guide to visit the island.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Bimini Cruise Port

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Bahamian dollar ($BSD) is the official currency for the Bahamas. However, U.S. currency is widely accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas.

In Bimini, the majority of businesses and restaurants accept U.S. cast of credit cards. Furthermore, local vendors will accept U.S. money when you’re shopping for souvenirs.

English is the official language of the Bahamas. However, locals may speak Bahamianese or Creole. For the most part, everyone speaks and understands English in Bimini.

Since Bimini is located in the Bahamas, it operates on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship’s time will be the same as the time on land.

Typically, when you visit Bimini, the temperatures range from 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. However, the breeze from the ocean makes it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures vary between 77 degrees in the middle of winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Getting Around Bimini

Although Bimini is only 7 miles long, there are a few ways to get around the island.

Here are a few ways you can get around Bimini:

Resorts World Tram

Bimini Bahamas cruise port

The Resorts Worlds tram service operates every 30 minutes and makes several stops around the Island. In fact there’s a stop right within short walking distance at the cruise port.

The tram is completely free and available for anyone to use. However, keep in mind that it will only take you to the Resort World properties, where you can visit the casino, beach, resorts, and restaurants.

You’ll find the free pick-up location right outside your cruise ship. It’s easy to find the pick-up location, and many people use the tram when visiting Bimini.

When you visit Bimini, there will be taxi services available. The taxi rates vary depending on where you want to go, but the common fare is between $5-$10 per person. Since the cruise port is the midway point of the island, the southern and northern parts are equal distances from the pier.

By Golf Cart

Bimini Bahamas cruise port golf cart rental

There are a few golf cart rental companies that operate in Bimini. They charge approximately $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 for a six-seater. Golf cart rentals are a great way to explore the beautiful island.

Tip: I have heard from other cruisers that there may be some room to negotiate prices.

If you want to stay close to the cruise port, you can always walk to your destination. Bimini is a small island and is very walkable!

The Resorts World Hilton resort is a 10-15 minute walk from the cruise ship. Bring water if you plan to walk because it can be very hot in Bimini.

On a visit to Bimini, you can expect to discover quaint towns that still hold their charm. There are miles of beautiful white sand beaches, and it is a scuba diving paradise with its marine life. You’ll find historical landmarks and plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture whether it is noshing on conch at one of the rustic stands or shopping at the Bimini Craft Center. These are some of the things to do in Bimini but there are plenty more.

Bimini in the Bahamas is becoming a destination for many cruise lines since the Resort World Cruise Port opened in the summer of 2021. The huge dock can accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world. Bimini has welcomed guests, including Ernest Hemmingway and Dr. Martin Luther King, for many years. The island is often overlooked for its more populated neighboring islands and even with the arrival of cruise ships, it still has a hidden gem feel to it. Other than Resort World, the rest of the island is like a step back in time and you can easily imagine what drew Hemmingway to it.

I was on a Press Trip to learn about the Holland America Rotterdam, but I arranged and paid for my day on Bimini Island.

1. Resorts World Tram

I arrived on Holland America Rotterdam and in no time was taking a long stroll down the dock. When you get off your ship, you will see a sign reading: “Walkway to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rental, and taxi to town.” You will also see the complimentary Bimini Tram. It can, however, be confusing when you come off the cruise ship. You are asked if you booked a tour, and they direct you to the tram, but it is free for everyone. I walked the pier to stretch my legs but with the heat, it can feel challenging. After a long day, our guide dropped us off to catch the tram back to the cruise ship.

Pro Tip: There is a golf cart rental place at the end of the dock off to the right. The cart can be rented for $60 cash.

Kayak Beach.

2. Fisherman’s Village And Kayak Beach

Located at the end of the dock, you’ll find a few businesses and the lovely Kayak Beach. As the name suggests, you can rent watercraft here. I thought it was lovely and a great place to get some sun not too far from the ship.

Guide Cleveland Maxwell.

3. Bimini Island Tours

I highly recommend booking a tour with Bimini Island Tours . This is a one-man show with guide Cleveland Maxwell Rolle Jr. — but you can call him Max. This tour was the highlight of my trip and Max was a joy. He is a Bahamahost certified with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investment, and Aviation as well as a certified Eco Tour Guide with the Bahamas National Trust. We met as strangers but left as family, literally; I think Max is related to half the people on the island.

I tend to explore on my own, but in this case, my experience would have been totally different. I was able to see so much more. This is a sleepy island and many of the businesses open at a more leisurely pace. Max planned our itinerary and made sure that someone met us at each stop. Having a local Biminite really made a difference in getting to meet so many interesting people with such great stories. I truly had an authentic Bahamian experience.

These are the places and people I met during my tour with Bimini Island Tours. Because Max is a private guide, he can tailor your trip to what you would like to see and experience. Max communicated by email, set up the perfect day, and sent me a final itinerary for my approval.

The Resorts World Beach.

4. Resorts World

My tour with Max started with a driving tour of this resort. This is a great option if you just want a day at the beach. You can book a package with your cruise, or simply take the tram and pay at the desk. The beach club is Virgin Cruise Lines “private beach” when their ships are in port. At other times the beach club is run by Resorts World and open to the public. It is a beautiful beach with two pools for a resort experience. You can also splurge on a cabana. The property has a casino as well. It is a pretty resort with not much local about it. I chose to spend my time supporting the local businesses.

Nate Hanna with freshly baked Bimini Bread.

5. Nate’s Bakery

One of the things I appreciated most on this tour was the opportunity to visit small local businesses. Nate Hanna has been baking bread since the 1970s. He started his own store after the death of his mother who started the business. When you walk in the door, Nate welcomes you with his big, bold personality and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air.

He started the business following in the footsteps of his late mother who ran a successful bakery. Her photo is prominently displayed in the shop. Nate bakes fresh Bimini bread every day. The classic recipe is a sweet rich bread made with generous amounts of sugar and coconut milk. It is so tasty especially when baked with all the love and care Nate pours into it.

Legendary boat builder Ansil Saunders

6. Ansil’s Boat House

Meeting Mr. Ansil Saunders was one of the highlights of my trip. He had our whole group in tears when he shared his experiences meeting and serving as a guide to Dr. Martin Luther King when he visited Bimini. King found inspiration to write his Nobel Peace Prize speech during his time exploring the mangrove forests in a boat with Ansil.

As a child, Ansil’s family lived next door to the house Ernest Hemmingway stayed in during his time in Bimini. In addition to his great tales, Ansil’s boats are legendary. He builds one boat a year: a 16-foot bone fisher which is a shallow draft boat made to catch bonefish. Ansil holds the world record for the largest bonefish caught.

7. The War Memorial And Heroes Park

This is just a quick stop to see the park that honors Bimini’s veterans of World War I and II as well as local heroes. The park has a lovely view of the ocean.

Mr. Ashley Saunders, builder and artist with his creation the Dolphin House.

8. The Dolphin House Museum

The Dolphin House is an incredible work of art created by Mr. Ashley Saunders (Ansil’s brother). He wasn’t always an artist, but an experience swimming with the wild dolphins of Bimini woke up the artistic spirit within him. You’ll find descriptions of this as a kitschy tourist attraction, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Saunders is incredibly talented and built the entire home from the ground up using materials found around the island and that washed ashore. He was upcycling before it was a thing, and he has created an incredible work of art. Join him and take a tour as he explains his inspiration for every mosaic, window, and built-in piece of furniture in the Dolphin House Museum, his home. Such a unique experience and one of the many things I loved doing in Bimini .

9. Radio Beach

We just did a quick stop on the Radio Beach. It’s definitely the tourist beach with shops, food stands, and, most importantly, public restrooms. It is named after the radio towers nearby and was the site of the first radio and telegraph station in 1920. It is also easily accessible by golf cart if you choose to rent one instead of taking a tour.

A Cuban refugee raft near one of the island's Conch Shacks.

10. Visit A Conch Shack

Conch is plentiful in Bimini, and you will see piles of shells in the water especially near the Conch Shack, where you can try Conch Salad, a local specialty. The salad is like ceviche only made with conch, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, and citrus juices. The Conch is prepared fresh each day. Behind each stand along the water, you can see fenced in areas where the conch is stored until it is harvested. At one of the stops, Max pointed out a rough-looking raft which turned out to be one Cuban refugees escaped on. There are so many to choose from, but Joe’s Conch Shack stands out.

“We put more love and care in it,” said the young lady working when asked what makes Joe’s stand out from the rest. “We cut up everything right in front of you.” So, you can see how fresh it is.

Bimini Craft Center.

11. Bimini Craft Center – Arts, Crafts, Souvenirs and Food

For those that love to shop, head to the Bimini Craft Center where you will find 17 booths filled with locally-made island crafts, hats, T-shirts, and other souvenirs. Located in the heart of Alice Town, you have the chance to meet friendly locals and learn about their history from interpretive signs throughout the center. Free Wi-Fi is available as well as public restrooms. Each day, a local food truck parks there, selling a variety of Bahamian food. It’s well worth the stop.

12. Ernest Hemingway Ruins – Tales of the Excentric Writer

As you drive through Alice Town, you will see some ruins with a big interpretive sign highlighting Ernest Hemingway’s stay on Bimini. The island was a huge inspiration for him, and he loved sport fishing in the area. It is said that Bimini gave him the insight to write The Old Man and the Sea .

Locals share tales of his infamous behavior on the island. It is also said that he was a heavy drinker and walked around with a 40-ounce bottle of rum stashed in his pocket. A boxing aficionado, Hemingway would bet $10 that someone couldn’t knock him out with one punch. He would allow the first hit and taunt them to make sure it was a hard one. The next thing the challenger knew, he was laid out with someone dumping water over him to wake him up.

Cracked Lobster at the Three Daughters Restaurant.

13. Three Daughters Restaurant

Finish your day with a meal at Three Daughters restaurant and enjoy their specialties, either the cracked lobster or cracked conch. I asked Max where he goes to eat, and he said this was his favorite. You can eat in or get your food to go. Filled mostly with locals and the occasional tourist, the food here was fantastic. The interior is nothing fancy, but you can eat on the screened porch for an excellent view.

The cracked lobster was deep-fried. I had never had it prepared this way and it was so tasty, crispy, and crunchy without being greasy. This is a family-run business with Leroy Rolle bringing fresh-caught fish and lobster right to the restaurant. On a sad note, Kim Rolle, one of the owners, was the first to die of COVID-19 on the island.

It was a great day in Bimini, and I just loved the local aspect of this trip. It felt authentic, not touristy. I highly recommend booking with Bimini Island Tours. Max is a treasure and his familiar relationships on the island truly enhanced our experience.

What are the most popular activities on Bimini?

What cruise ships can dock at the bimini pier, when is the best time of year to visit bimini island, how to get from south bimini to north bimini, is bimini a private island for virgin voyages, does bimini, bahamas have an airport, what airlines fly to bimini, bahamas, do you need a passport when traveling to bimini, are prices in bimini expensive, where to stay in bimini, bahamas, what’s the weather like in bimini.

Bimini is 54 miles from Miami

The small island chain is about 54 miles directly east of Miami, Florida .  It’s also the western most district of the Bahamas. Mainland United States is actually closer to Bimini than the capital city, Nassau, which is over 130 miles to the southeast .

The proximity to the US allows for some to make day trips to the islands by way of high speed ferries. More on that later.

Bimini is only about 9 square miles in totality. Two main islands make up most of the island chain: North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini is 7 miles long and only about 750 feet wide.  South Bimini is about 3 miles long and about half a mile wide.

The water around the islands is very shallow at 20-30 feet in most places. To the west, between Miami and Bimini the Gulf Stream flows northward through water 6,000 feet deep, and this brings a variety of fish to the area.

There’s a reason this island of the Bahamas is so popular for sport fishing. The marine life is diverse around Bimini.

This small island has a rich history waiting to be explored. From its early days as a haven for pirates to its current status as an up-and-coming paradise, Bimini is sure to amaze you with its beauty and culture.

Known by locals as “ The Gateway to the Bahamas ,” Bimini was first settled by indigenous Lucayan people and still retains its Lucayan name “Bimini” which means “small islands” .

The island originally was attractive mainly due to its plentiful fish population and peaceful atmosphere – traits which still define Bimini today.

A world-famous vacation spot for vacationers, the island earned its fame through the contributions of journalist and author Ernest Hemingway .

Hemingway’s many accomplishments, including the two novels “Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream,” were inspired by his visits to Bimini .

Bimini is also known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital of the World because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing in the world.

gateway to the bahamas, Bimini islands

On July 4th, 2021 Bimini welcomed its first cruise ship into the newly finished Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port , the official name for the cruise port on North Bimini island.

The single-pier port was developed by Resorts World Bimini.  It is just one of three ports in the Bahamas that is situated on a non-private island, along with Freeport and Nassau.

With a population of only about 2,000 full time residents, Bimini Bahamas is an exotic destination not yet overrun by tourism and commercialism. You won’t find a Diamonds International in this vacation spot. Beaches are clean and open.

Quiet streets have more golf carts and bicycles than actual cars . And with only one cruise ship docked at the pier at one time, the cruise passenger population is at least slightly limited.

There are no bridges between North and South Bimini . However, there are ferries that will take you back and forth so you can explore some of the activities on our list below.

I also recommend renting a golf cart for easy transportation on your own. It costs $60 for the entire day and travel on the island is very laid back and simple. Just remember to drive on the left hand side of the road. Queens Highway is the main road through North Bimini.

Most cruise lines offer an excursion to Resorts World Bimini which has a casino and beach club. The resort provides the free tram service to the resort and other drop off locations. No ticket is needed. You can walk out of the port area from the cruise ship, but it’s a fairly long walk.

The first tram stop is Resorts World Bimini. The 2nd stop on the tram is Paradise Beach where you can rent loungers, umbrellas, kayaks, and the golf carts mentioned above.

beach club by Virgin Voyages from above

Ultimate List of Things to Do and See in Bimini Bahamas

1. beach club.

When visiting Bimini with Virgin Voyages, the Beach Club is included at no extra charge.  Virgin partnered with World Resorts to offer the Beach Club as the cruise line’s “private island destination”. The Beach Club has two swimming pools and an exclusive private area for guests staying in Rock Star suites.

A buffet lunch is served at the Beach Club and soft drinks are included, just like on Virgin ships.

When visiting Bimini with other cruise lines, there is a charge to get in the Beach Club and you will also have to pay for food and basic beverages. There is a free tram that will take you from the pier right to the Beach Club.

2. See the underwater, mystical Bimini Wall (Bimini Road)

For a truly remarkable underwater experience that comes with some controversy, check out a dive to the Bimini Wall. This underwater rock formation, sometimes called the Bimini Road has had many conspiracy theories as to its origin.

Is it an ancient road to the lost city of Atlantis?  Was it caused by a tsunami? Man-made or natural, the large rectangular limestone slabs have inspired all kinds of theories. The structure is about half a mile long and is 18 feet below the water.

3. Experience the best beaches of Bimini

This is the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach day. Use our list for the best sandy beaches in Bimini, or you can just rent a golf cart and drive around the small island to find them yourself.

You will find some great beach locations at the south end of the north island. The waters of Bimini are truly remarkable.

One of the many white sandy beaches in Bimini

Below are some of the highest rated beaches in the Bimini islands. These beaches never feel overcrowded, but some are more secluded than others.

  • Radio Beach – Probably the most popular beach due to its beauty and easy access, Radio Beach is very close to Alice Town. It’s the only public beach on the islands to have public amenities as bathrooms and food vendors.
  • Tiki Hut Beach – With a 2 mile-long stretch of white sand, Tiki Hut Beach offers a great getaway. Palm trees and vegetation provide are all around, helping make the beach on South Bimini island seem even more secluded.
  • Porgy Bay Beach – This is a cozy, quaint beach in North Bimini just south of Resorts World Bimini in Bailey Town.
  • Spook Hill – Shallow and calm waters can be found at Spook Hill beach, and it’s one of the most popular beaches in Bimini for good reason. The name comes from the proximity of the beach to a local cemetery but don’t let that scare you away from the soft as talc sand.
  • Blister Beach – A lovely beach in North Bimini known for its calmer waters and great snorkeling, this beach also goes by the name Bimini Bay Beach.
  • Resort World Bimini Beach – Perfect for a resort style beach, this area is a 4.5 acre beach with room for up to 2,000 people.
  • Local Cays with great beach spots – If you feel like getting a little further away from the main Bimini islands you can check out some incredible local cays. Turtle Rocks, Piquet Rocks, Holm Cay, North Cat Cay (Honeymoon Harbour), and South Cat Cay are just a few local beaches to get away from it all.

4. Go on a shark dive with Bimini Bull Run

You will get up close an personal with Caribbean bull sharks on this Bimini island excursion. The number of sharks you see while on this cage dive is really quite impressive. Shark fishing is actually illegal in the Bahamas and these creatures thrive in the crystal clear waters.

All you need is a diving mask and a belt and you can plunge into the shark-infested waters for a very unique experience. The sharks are given scraps of food all around the cage and the visibility in these waters is second-to-none.

5. Explore the wreckage of the S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona’s wreckage has remained in place for almost 100 years, after the concrete ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson and was built to transport troops during the first World War, although it never did so.  The vessel was made out of concrete since steel was not as readily available at the time.

This popular dive site is perfect for snorkeling as well, as the wreck sits in just 15 feet of water. The shipwreck site was used as a bombing target for United States fighter pilots during World War II , so the ship shows significant damage.

But divers are still able to see inside the concrete hull of the ship and find many varieties of marine life around the area. History lovers and diving enthusiasts alike will find something to love at the S.S. Sapona wreckage site.

6. Visit Rainbow Reef and Tuna Alley

These two amazing dive sites are part of the same reef system off the coast of North Cat Cay . A short boat ride south from the main Bimini islands to the Bimini Cays will get you there, and you can explore both the same day.

  • Rainbow Reef is one of the most colorful (hence the name) and shallow reefs in Bimini. Accessible by boat, the maximum depth of the reef is about 20 feet. As part of a protected marine park over 100 species of fish can be found in the area. If you decide to dive or snorkel to the deepest parts of the reef you may find sea turtles and nurse sharks that frequent the reef. Typically this area is teeming with marine life and there is an abundance of coral to admire.
  • Tuna Alley has been called by some divers “the best dive site in the Caribbean”. An underwater wall over 100 feet tall inspires awe in most guests who view this site. This is another reef right near North Cat Cay. There are several canyons under the water that are perfect for exploring. The water is pristine as well, as the Gulf Stream’s current helps wash out any debris and keep the seas looking “ Bimini blue” . The name of this scuba diving site was inspired by the numerous tuna that can often be found near the reef.

7. Explore Victory Reef

Victory Reef is also teeming with life and divers can expect to find fish, sea turtles, lobsters and sharks in the area. Most recommend the site for drift diving, as you can drift along with the marine life and enjoy the tall, vibrant, and abundant coral along this beautiful reef. The reef is located south of North Cat Cay , which is south of the Bimini islands and it’s depth runs from 30 – 80 feet.

8. Tour Dolphin House Museum

For $10 per person , you can check out a very unique museum in Bimini. Built completely from recycled materials, this enchanting building houses eclectic mosaics that reflect the islands history. Perhaps the door on the building says it best, “Welcome to Bimini’s most unique and artistic structure.  Built by Ashley Saunders . A bridge between human and dolphin consciousness. A work in progress since 1993.”

As the museum truly is a work in progress you can expect new things to be added all the time. Keep in mind the museum is also the artist’s home, so it’s more of residence than an exhibit. Still, everywhere you turn in the Dolphin House you will find something unique, built by hand, and made from recycled materials . There are 3 levels of the building to explore with a roof top terrace that overlooks the beautiful water.

9. Stop by the legendary Fountain of Youth

According to legend, Arawak Indians in the area told the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon about a Fountain of Youth in Bimini. In 1513 the ambitious explorer set out to find Bimini but failed to find the islands or the fountain. Then he went on to discover the Gulf Stream and Florida instead.

Today there is a 1,000 year-old well carved out of limestone rock that locals refer to as the Fountain of Youth. The well is fairly deep and there is fresh water way down at the bottom. As far as it’s healing properties…. I will just say that being in the calming atmosphere of Bimini is enough to keep one young.

10. Hilton at Resort World Bimini

Hilton at Resort World Bimini is a beautiful resort. It offers an array of amenities and activities such as a private beach, swimming pool, spa, fitness center, restaurants, parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours, tennis courts and more.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary shuttles to the nearby marina or enjoy sailing excursions on crystal clear waters. From deep sea fishing trips to snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions, there is plenty to do around this stunning property. There’s also a casino inside if you feel like leaving some donations to the 750-acre resort .

11. Visit Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina

This resort has been in its current location in Alice Town since 1947 and is the perfect destination for sports fisherman looking for a big-game fishing experience. While the name of the resort kind of says it all, Bimini Big Game Club Resort has a plethora of activities to take part in.

Amenities include a pool, game area with pool and ping pong, a dive shop, several restaurants, massage services and more. There are hotel and dive packages if you plan on spending the night, or you can book one of their Bimini Dive Safaris to check out Hammerheads and dolphins. Guided fishing excursions from the resort are offered for both new and experienced anglers.  Bimini holds multiple world records for fish caught in the area, so you never know what you might find.

12. Visit Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center

Since the scuba center is located in Bimini Big Game Club Resort I could have just put it in the same category, but I didn’t want those looking exclusively for diving experiences to miss this one. Neal Watson is President of the Bahamas Dive Association and is world-renown for his diving savvy. Oh, and Neal is also Director of Dive Operations for Guy Harvey Outpost so he knows what he’s doing.

Today the scuba center is operated by father and son. There are over 20 dive sites that have buoys marking their location. They are placed and maintained by commercial dive operators. If you want to see any of the reefs or dive sites already mentioned in this article and want a pro to show you the ropes, this is a great starting point.

Because of Bimini’s proximity to the Gulf Stream it is not uncommon for visitors to see spotted dolphins, Loggerhead turtles, Southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and barracudas, along with numerous kingfish and tropical fish.

13. Take a Boat Charter

Whether you want to charter a boat in Bimini for some deep sea fishing, spear fishing, snorkeling, or just some sightseeing around the beautiful Bimini islands, you can easily find a charter boat to take you out.

There are many companies in Bimini that offer fishing charters, and they range from private boats to larger vessels with experienced captains and crew. Many of the boats also come equipped with amenities like air-conditioning, cabins, and full kitchens. You can book a charter for a half-day or full day trip depending on your needs, and prices vary based on the size of the boat, the length of your trip, and other special requests.

Before booking any charter make sure to inquire about their safety record and what type of insurance coverage is provided by the company. That way you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re in good hands while out on the water. One of the more popular charter services is Bimini Brown Charters . They have been doing this for a long time and really know the area.

Bimini Cruise Port Guide

Just 50 miles from the coast of Florida, Bimini is a world unto itself. It was one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite places where he came to write as well as fish for the elusive blue marlin. With a population of only 2,000, the islands never feel crowded. On your Bimini cruise, you’ll find the North Island is a bit more lively, the South Island a bit more relaxed.

These unspoiled islands are endowed with peaceful, pristine beaches, friendly locals, fresh seafood, and some of the best sportfishing and water sports in the world. Diving and snorkeling enthusiasts will be in paradise here, where gorgeous coral reefs, colorful fish, blue holes created by sunken limestone, and shipwrecks await. Enjoy the uncomplicated way of island life on a cruise to the Bahamas with Celebrity Cruises.

Since the warm waters of The Bahamas run right through the Gulf Stream, the Bimini Biological Field Station set up a shark lab here. Tour the station, learn about the research done, and even adopt a shark. Non-aggressive lemon sharks are common in the area.

Dolphin House Museum

A lifelong labor of love and a must-see, 5th generation Biminite historian and poet, Ashley Saunders, built this charming and quirky museum from shells, sea glass, recycled tiles, coins, and objects salvaged from area shipwrecks. It’s all an amazing tribute to the wonders of the ocean.

Bimini Road

Off Bimini’s north coast lies the mysterious Bimini Road, submerged under about 18 feet of water. Snorkel or scuba to see giant rocks neatly laid out in a road-like line for a half-mile. Some people like to think it may be a part of the sunken Lost City of Atlantis; others think it’s simply a result of natural forces.

Top things to do in bimini, lounge on the beach.

Some of the best beaches in Bimini are on the southwest side of the North Island, like Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill. On Bimini beaches, you’ll enjoy fun water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and paddleboarding. Of course, you can also do nothing more than gloriously soak up some sun while sipping an icy cold Kalik.

Snorkel or Dive

Bimini is full of exciting places to snorkel or scuba dive. Go snorkeling at Rainbow Reef, a protected marine park with dozens of species of fish. Experienced divers can visit the Continental Shelf on a two-tank dive. Or explore the fascinating S.S. Sapona shipwreck and learn about the concrete ship’s storied history.

While on your Bimini cruise, spend some time fishing these impossibly turquoise waters. Anglers from all over come here hoping to catch bonefish, blue marlin, tuna, amberjack, sailfish, and more. In fact, over 50 fishing world records were set in these waters. Hemingway’s time fishing and living in Bimini even inspired his prize-winning The Old Man and the Sea .

Top Food & Drink Spots in Bimini

From sophisticated seafood restaurants to casual beachside conch shacks, Bimini is a foodie’s paradise. Seafood is king, especially conch meat, which is transformed into fresh salads, fritters, chowder, and ceviche. Sweet, fresh-baked Bimini bread is another staple not to be missed.

Rum is a favored island beverage, and there are two cocktails that rise to the top of the most-popular list: Goombay Smash, which features four types of rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice; and Rum Runners, made with fruit juices, banana liqueur, rum, and grenadine.

Culture & History of Bimini

Bimini, also called The Biminis, is actually three islands: North Island, South Island, and the uninhabited East Island. The first inhabitants in Bimini were the Lucayans, and in their language, the name "Bimini" means "two islands". Bimini currently has a population of about only 2,000 people, most of whom live in Alice Town on North Bimini.

Some of Bimini’s famed visitors include Juan Ponce de Leon, who searched for the Fountain of Youth here; Ernest Hemingway, who wrote and fished on the islands; and Martin Luther King, Jr., who wrote his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize here.

Transportation in Bimini

Transportation is not a problem on the seven-mile-long North Island. One of the most popular ways to get around is by golf cart or bicycle, which are available to rent. Be aware that driving is on the left side of the road here. If you want to travel between the North and the South Island, you can simply take the daily ferry. Taxis are also plentiful.

Shopping Near the Bimini Cruise Port

On the North Island, King’s Highway is the easiest place to find shops for souvenirs or something to eat. There’s also a small market just south of the cruise pier. Find a stall run by a local craftsperson at the Craft Centre in Alice Town for handcrafted mementos made by a local.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of The Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar ($BSD). U.S. currency is also accepted. Most shops and restaurants accept debit cards or credit cards, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand.

Discovering Bimini

bimini islands

Bimini is a picturesque island chain in the Bahamas famous for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and diverse marine life. The islands only have small communities of local inhabitants. They live in Port Royal (South Bimini), Bailey Town, and Alice Town on North Bimini. The main roads connecting the communities are King’s Highway and Queen’s Highway.

The name Bimini means “the twins” or “two islands” in the ancient Lucayan language. Bimini consists of two main islands—North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini Island

The beautiful 7-mile North Bimini is a low-lying island with gorgeous beaches along its coast. The island is only 700 feet (200 m) wide. This part of Bimini has the Cruise Port and most of the luxury resorts.

South Bimini Island

South Bimini is the quieter of the two islands and is known for its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. It’s home to the Bimini Sands Resort and Marina, Bimini Biological Field Station (Shark Lab), and a network of nature trails. The island offers serene beaches and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

East Bimini Island

There is no official designation of an “East Bimini.” Sometimes, the larger, triangular-shaped part of North Bimini is referred to as a separate area, but it is not considered a distinct island. This part of Bimini is characterized by its untouched landscape and tranquil environment. It has secluded beaches, dense mangroves, and excellent spots for bird-watching.

In this article, I’ll only refer to North and South Bimini, including attractions on the north side of North Bimini.

Getting from the Cruise Port to Bimini Attractions

Bimini shuttle

Bimini doesn’t have any public transport system. However, you have three transportation options when on the island for a day. These are:

Free shuttle: A free tram takes tourists to the main attractions and beaches in North Bimini.

Golf cart hire: Hiring a golf cart is the most convenient way to explore the island. This gives you the freedom to go beach hopping and find hidden gems on this paradise island. Just remember to drive on the left.

Taxi:  Taxis are widely available at Bimini Cruise Port and the airport. To get to North Bimini from South Bimini Airport, take a taxi to the South Ferry Dock. Then a water taxi will take you to the ferry port in Alice Town—a journey of around ten minutes.

Free Things to Do in Bimini

Bimini offers a wealth of attractions that will keep you busy for the entire day in port. The good news is that plenty of free activities cater to diverse interests, from stunning beaches to markets, nature trails, and historical sites.

Here’s a guide to some of the top spots you can explore without spending a Bahamian cent.

The pristine beach is lined with palm trees and lush vegetation, providing plenty of shade and a tropical environment.

Alice Town Beach is an urban beach conveniently located near bars, restaurants, and restrooms. Also, the beach has water sports rentals for paddle boarding, snorkeling, surfing, and beach sports. This expansive beach always has peaceful, relaxing spots on busy cruise days.

Aerial view of Bimini Island in the Bahamas

Bimini, Bahamas

A cruise to Bimini sweeps passengers to a small Bahamian island, surrounded by sea so vivid blue it has its own nickname, “Bimini Blues.” While unwinding with a beach read is a wonderful possibility, there are shipwrecks to explore and stingrays to meet. Bimini, Bahamas encompasses two islands and the Bimini cruise port is on North Bimini, which is 7 miles long. A tram will whisk you to various locations around the island right from the pier. There are also golf cart and bike rentals available. Spend a day at Resorts World Bimini and go from the private beach to the pool or casino. In the Gulf Stream, Bimini is known for a rich profusion of marine life and was a favorite retreat of Ernest Hemingway for sport fishing. Take a boat to Honeymoon Harbour, a hidden stretch of sand favored by stingrays. Watch these disc-shaped creatures undulate over white sand. Several whale species feed off these bountiful Bahamas coastlands and Atlantic spotted dolphins often pop by. Venture into Alice Town on the King’s Highway for local specialties, like succulent conch salad sliced and diced before your eyes. A trip to the beach is a must on your Bimini cruise. The S.S. Sapona wreck off South Bimini is an excellent snorkeling and dive destination. Paradise Beach on North Bimini is a popular pick for a full day of sand and sun.

Visiting Bimini Island by Cruise Ship

Touring Bimini Island from a Cruise Ship

bimini cruise dock

We just got back from a cruise on the Carnival Magic. (nice ship) One of the ports of call was to Bimini Island in the Bahamas, which we had never been to. I knew there was a ferry from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, but I did not know that cruise ships were stopping there. Apparently it is a new thing…And boy was it worth it! We were the only ship at the dock, which made it nice. But there are plenty of things to do on the island to spread people out.

bimini cruise dock

Bimini Island is a very small island at only 7 miles long and 700 feet wide. It is sort of in the shape of a triangle with gaps at one of the corners. South Bimini is much larger, but inaccessible from where the cruise ship docks. The eastern part of North Bimini is also much larger, but that part is mostly wilderness.  Alice Town and other things to do are all on the strip of land where the cruise ship docks.

Transportation on Bimini Island

One thing we almost never do on a safe island is take the cruise ship excursions. The ship’s excursions to the beach were $65 for two people to hang out a resort and pay for their food and drinks. We had already decided to figure out a way to get to the beach on our own. We always bring our snorkel equipment, so we never need to rent any. You will have a pretty good view of The Island from the ship when it’s at the dock, so you can spot Radio Beach way at the southern tip (see picture).

The Resorts World Tram Service and Beach Excursion

bimini cruise dock

The Resorts World Bimini is located north of the cruise port terminal, and sponsors a free tram which will take you from the dock (close to where the ship is) to the hotel to spend the day at their pool and Beach 360 . That is also a paid cruise excursion. At the time this was written, it was $64.99 for 2 people which included a welcome drink and 2 beach chairs. The Resorts World Bimini sits on 4.5 acres, and features two lagoon pools, lounge chairs and day beds, hammocks, oceanfront and poolside private cabanas, and two bars. If you want a no-hassle day where everything is taken care of for you, then definitely do this excursion. There was a huge line for this, so we know most of the passengers participated in this excursion.

Alice Town and Radio Beach by Golf Cart or Tram

bimini cruise dock

If you want to go into Alice Town or to Radio Beach, which are both south of the dock, you can either rent a golf cart for $60 per day or take a $5 per person taxi-tram into town. You will have to walk the entire way down a very long pier to get to the main road on land. There is an information booth at the very end where the pier road ends at the main island road.

You will pass the golf cart storage area as you walk down the pier road, don’t go there. That’s just where they store the carts, not where you rent them. You rent golf carts and pick up the taxi-tram from the information booth on the main road. If you choose the taxi-tram, keep in mind that you will have to wait for a return tram, and there is no set schedule. If you are willing to do all of that, then the taxi-tram is the way to go. If you have 4 people in your group, then you might consider the golf carts because you can take them all the way to the southern tip of the island and park near the beach, then come back when you want.

bimini cruise dock

The taxi-tram driver gave us a little tour, talking about the history of the island as we drove into town. However, the sound system was so bad we could not understand one word she said. I did include pictures here for you to see what the drive was like. It was cool because the island is so narrow in places that you can see water on both sides of the street. It is about a 5 to 10 minute ride into town which is where the entrance to the beach is. If you want to go all the way to the southern tip of the island, you will either have to walk or take a golf cart.

Sport Fishing on Bimini Island

bimini cruise dock

As many of you know, Bimini is known for it’s sports fishing. You can book a fishing charter at the marina or go to Radio Beach where there are boats anchored right in the shallows that you can swim up to and charter. They run about $400 for half day and $800 for full day. Here is the business card I got from one of them. I have no idea how good they are or if they’re legit, but the boats looked nice and the taxi driver seemed to think they were ok. Definitely book at your own risk. Or you can book a fishing excursion through the cruise line if you want that security. You can also check out the Bimini Bahamas website for more info. I took a picture of the business card in the taxi, so it’s a bit blurry.

Radio Beach

bimini cruise dock

Once the tram drops you off near the shopping stalls, it’s just a short walk up the sidewalk to get to the beach. Right at the beach entrance, you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas, and there is Sherry’s Paradise Beach Bar has cold drinks and food. We chose to walk south along the beach to find the wreck that we heard about. We were told that it was a good place to snorkel. It was only about half a mile south of the entrance to Radio Beach, and the walk was just beautiful. We were the only ones on the beach which made it even better. Make sure you bring some sneakers to walk along the beach there, because it is not sandy in a lot of places. It’s basically one giant flat rock, but it can be rough for bare feet.

Snorkeling on Bimini Island

bimini cruise dock

We found the wreck pretty easily, but it was almost completely out of water, so not a great place to snorkel. My husband went in, but I stayed on shore. It was a little rough getting in, and the wreck is made of sharp, rusted metal. So I didn’t want to chance it. Getting in was not easy, because the rocks were large and sharp and the waves were smashing up against them. It was only about another hundred yards past the wreck to the get to the very tip of the island.

bimini cruise dock

There, we found a nice place to snorkel but it’s right next to the Channel where the charter boats go in and out, so be very careful and stick close to the rocks. It was easier to get into the water there because there was a sloped area that was protected from direct waves. The beach there is nice and sandy to sit on for people who don’t want to go in the water. We saw so many fish even just standing knee deep! The fish that we saw snorkeling around the far tip of the point were really beautiful. But it was a little windy out there so the conditions were a little bit rough at times. It was fine for an experienced snorkel or diver. We are both certified divers, so it was fine with us.

Beachcombing on Bimini

bimini cruise dock

After we were finished snorkeling, we walked back to Radio Beach and had an ice cold beer from Sherry’s Paradise Beach Bar . It’s a cute open-air place where you can get food and drinks. While at the beach we found tons of shells, including lots of Queen Conch shells that were sitting in the sand. Never pick one out of the water because there could be something living in it. It is illegal to take Queen Conch shells with a living or dead animal inside. They will ask you when you board the ship if you got the shells off the sand or out of the water, so best to just pick them up out of the dry sand. And they’re everywhere, so that is easy to do.

We found lots of other shells there as well, so if you enjoy beachcombing, this is definitely the place to go. It is legal to collect shells there and bring them back into the U.S. The water temperature was perfect and it was so clear that it was very pleasant to just walk around in the water.

How to Get Back to the Ship

bimini cruise dock

We hung out at the beach for about three hours before heading back into town (about a 5 minute walk). There are several little shops for T-shirts and gifts where you wait for the tram, so we looked around while we waited. But we waited quite a while, and there was no tram in sight, so a taxi stopped and offered to take us back to the dock for $5 each. We took that deal and had a nice ride back. There are some duty-free shops not far from the cruise ship terminal where the taxis generally stop. They sell cigars in other items if that is something you are looking for.

On the walk down the pier to the ship we saw a sea turtle swimming alongside us…so cool! It’s a long walk back, and it’s hot, so be prepared. But the view of the beach by the pier is beautiful. It’s a very pristine area around the dock.

The Bimini Fast Ferry from Fort Lauderdale

bimini cruise dock

We did see the Bimini Fast Ferry from Fort Lauderdale on the way back. That boat is amazing! It looks like something space-aged. Apparently the ride is about 2 hours. There are different prices you can pay, for day trips, one way, or returning on a different day. The ferry also has service from Bimini to Freeport Bahamas. So you can always take a day trip there if you are staying on Bimini for some time. The Bahamas DO require proof of vaccination, so be sure you have that in order before you plan your trip. Only those who were vaccinated against COVID-19 were allowed off the ship onto Bimini. They are strict about this. Check out the Bimini Fast Ferry website for more information on tickets and schedules.

It was nice to go where there were no crowds, because most people take the tram to the Resorts World Beach and hang out at their expansive pool and beach. So if you want a relaxing day on a stunning beach, this is the place to do it. We really enjoyed Bimini island and would definitely take a ship that goes back there. I did make a video with all of this information (plus video) on my YouTube Channel.

Exploring the Idyllic Island Paradise of Bimini

If you’re in search of an unforgettable cruise in the Caribbean , Bimini in the Bahamas is a destination worth considering. Just a short cruise away from mainland Florida, this idyllic island offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Bimini has the clearest and cleanest waters in the region which makes snorkeling and diving particularly enjoyable. Marine life is diverse around Bimiini and the islands are popular for sport fishing.

Let’s dive into the reasons why taking a cruise to Bimini is an excellent choice, discuss the cruise lines that travel to the island, and highlight the exciting activities and attractions to explore during your visit.

A Little Bit About Bimini

Only about 9 square miles, there are two main islands that make up the island chain, North Bimini and South Bimini, with a much smaller third island, East Bimini. The waters surrounding the islands are shallow at just 20 to 30 feet in most places.

Known as the “Gateway to the Bahamas,” Bimini was settled by indigenous Lucayan people. They christened the area Bimini, meaning “two islands” or “twin islands.”

In the past, the islands were also a haven for pirates, and during the Prohibition period in the United States, the islands’ close proximity made them an excellent haven and supply point for rum-running.

Ernest Hemingway lived in Bimini for two years, from 1935 to 1937. It was here that he worked on To Have and Have Not and fished aboard his boat Pilar .

Bimini has been a favorite cruising ground for America’s yachting set, because of its location off the Florida coast where the Gulf Stream meets the Bahama Banks. The channel here between North and South Bimini is a large and sheltered harbor ideal for boaters.

Bimini is known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing anywhere in the world.

Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port

Opened in the summer of 2021,   Bimini’s New Cruise Port at Resorts World has made it possible for Oasis-class vessels to dock directly in the area. Resorts World Bimini is an expansive beachfront resort that has a hotel, casino, marina and a private beach.

Cruise Lines That Travel to Bimini

Things to Do in Bimini

Although Bimini is a small island, it offers a wealth of activities and attractions to suit a short cruise visit. Bimini Cruise Port has many things to do that are not your run-of-the-mill tourist activities.

Here are some highlights to consider during your time on the island:

Explore Bimini’s Beaches: Bimini boasts pristine beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it a haven for beach lovers. From the powdery sands of Alice Town Beach to the secluded sands of Radio Beach, you’ll find the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Dive into Underwater Adventures: Bimini is a paradise for divers and snorkelers, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Explore sites like the famous Bimini Road, a series of underwater rock formations believed to be part of an ancient civilization, or swim with dolphins in their natural habitat.

Visit the Bimini Biological Field Station: Also known as the “Shark Lab,” this research facility allows visitors to learn about marine conservation and observe shark research up close. At Bimini Biological Field Station you can join educational tours and even participate in snorkeling expeditions to encounter these majestic creatures in their natural environment.

Experience the Healing Hole: Bimini is home to the legendary Fountain of Youth, a natural underwater spring known as The Healing Hole . It is believed to have rejuvenating properties due to its mineral-rich water. Take a refreshing dip and see if the legends hold true.

Dolphin House Museum: The Dolphin House Museum is full of items collected across the Bimini islands. It is an ocean-inspired museum built using recycled, salvaged and donated materials. A truly unique spot to visit on the island.

Snorkel the S.S. Sapona Shipwreck: the S.S. Sapona is one of a fleet of concrete ships commissioned by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson when steel was in short supply and troops needed to be transported during WWI.

The ship was completed after the end of the war, and so was sold for scrap. Briefly used as a casino, and then for oil storage, Sapona was bought to be used as a floating warehouse to store and distribute liquor during the prohibition.

During a hurricane in 1926, the ship ran aground and was damaged beyond repair. Today, the Sapona Shipwreck  sits in 15 feet of water and makes for a fascinating snorkel site.

Discover Local Culture: Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Bimini by visiting the local art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Enjoy delicious Bahamian cuisine, sip on a refreshing cocktail, and engage with friendly locals who are eager to share their island’s rich heritage.

Bimini Is Worth The Visit

With its beautiful beaches, diving excursion, fantastic marine life and laid-back atmosphere, Bimini is a refreshing place to visit. Year-round warm temperatures that rarely get below 60, make it pleasant to visit almost any time of the year.

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

I f you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely that the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary — and for good reason. Found on both Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages , Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas — one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida — the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers have lots of choices. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in summer. Plus, wave season — when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year — runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain. You also won't have to contend with potential itinerary changes due to hurricane season , which runs from June through October.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found in summer, with lower temperatures during winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

Islands in the Bahamas are featured on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix of ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore, and even Gulf Coast departures from Galveston, Texas. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston, South Carolina.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, the country's proximity to the East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "Big Nine" brands — Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages.

One unique outlier is Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line), which operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort there, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas if they wish to do so before returning to Florida on the ship several days later.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, take a quick taxi ride to Paradise Island, which is home to the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use the outdoor pools and waterslides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style johnnycakes.

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands that can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers on their first visit, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright-blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Bimini Beach Club on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

Most of the cruise industry's private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually a barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also offer water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also available, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings , consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during wave season, when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for extras like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in restaurants that charge fees for meals. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates if you live in Florida, military discounts or " kids sail free " promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. Dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a trip to this popular cruise region.

Cruise Hive: New Shopping Center Opens Near Bimini Cruise Port

Fisherman's Village at Resorts World Bimini

Resorts World Bimini’s Fisherman’s Village, just a short distance from the Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port, has completed its final expansion at the open-air, island-themed shopping center in the Bahamas.

The central hub for shopping has expanded its reef-themed retail offerings to support the more than one million passengers who have visited the cruise port since its opening in 2021.

Fisherman’s Village now features various boutiques, including Beach Essentials, The Reef, Home Reef, Reef Fit, Splash, Elephant Gem, Reef Joint, and the latest addition, Rainbow Reef.

“Fisherman’s Village has been carefully curated to provide a unique and elevated shopping experience for all visitors, whether staying at our resort or visiting via cruise,”   said Robert DeSalvio, president of Genting Americas East, which owns Resorts World.

“The boutiques at Fisherman’s Village are named for our love and respect for Bimini’s vast marine life, which brings visitors near and far to discover our corner of the world,”  he added.  “We hope for all who come to Bimini to find a feeling of comfort and enjoyment at Fisherman’s Village.”

The retail offerings at Fisherman’s Village now include an array of stores catering to different interests. Beach Essentials provides necessary items for beachgoers, while The Reef and Home Reef offer a selection of home goods.

Reef Fit focuses on athleisure wear and athletic goods, and Splash offers various women’s clothing and resort wear. Elephant Gem presents unique jewelry options.

Reef Joint, which provides gourmet snacks and souvenirs, and Rainbow Reef, which features tie-dye and colorful clothing and beach necessities, are the last two additions.

The center also features the Healing Hole restaurant, which offers Bahamian cuisine and specialty island cocktails, with live music daily. Guests can access Fisherman’s Village via a complimentary trolley that runs every 10 to 15 minutes from the cruise port.

Open-Air Market for Major Cruise Lines

Located on the seven-mile island of  Bimini , Fisherman’s Village is a part of Resorts World Bimini, a 305-room hotel with four pools, 16 restaurants and bars, and a casino.

Following the completion of the Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port three years ago, major cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises have been docking regularly.

Cruise Ship Docked in Bimini

Genting Group also operates two cruises through its Resorts World Cruises, which launched in 2022 in Asia. Cruises depart from Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Hong Kong; Jakarta, Indonesia; Keelung, Taiwan; Port Klang, Malaysia; and Singapore.

Hundreds of passengers will enjoy the finished open-air market at the official opening on June 21. Carnival Cruise Line’s  Carnival Glory  and  Carnival Conquest ; Royal Caribbean’s  Allure of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas ,  Freedom of the Seas , and  Symphony of the Seas ; Norwegian Cruise Line’s  Norwegian Gem ; Virgin Voyages’  Valiant Lady ; MSC Cruises’  MSC Magnifica ; and Celebrity Cruises’  Celebrity Reflection  are currently scheduled to visit Bimini this month.

Eastern Caribbean vs. Western Caribbean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Sherri Eisenberg

Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean cruises might sound similar when you start researching them. Just about wherever you go, you'll enjoy sunny days, sandy shores, sparkling seas and balmy breezes. But the reality is that Caribbean islands' personalities can vary as widely as those of regions of the U.S.

Additionally, it's important to remember that Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean refer to cruise ship route types rather than literal descriptions of locations on a map.

So, which Caribbean itinerary is your best choice? Read on for our evaluation on how to make the right choice for your next cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Embarkation ports

Typically, you sail to the Eastern Caribbean from ports in Florida — in most cases, Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral , the port on the coast near Orlando — as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico, and a few Eastern Seaboard ports, such as New York City. For Western Caribbean sailings, you can depart from Florida ports, as well as Galveston, Texas; Mobile, Alabama; and New Orleans.

So, which embarkation port is best for you? There's no secret to it: whichever one you can get to the fastest and the cheapest.

That said, if you see an itinerary that embarks in the Caribbean, know that you'll get a little extra time in the islands in exchange for that longer flight. On the flip side, itineraries that embark in the Northeast require you to sail the oft-rough seas of the Atlantic to get down to those pale blue Caribbean waters. You will also need longer than a week to sail from more northern home ports to destinations beyond the Bahamas.

Itineraries

bimini cruise dock

Weeklong, round-trip cruises are common in both parts of the Caribbean, but you can also find shorter and longer options.

Common ports in the Eastern Caribbean include both big, crowded, touristy options and some smaller, sleepier islands, which are typically only accessible by small ships or during shore excursions. Itineraries might include visits to Grand Turk, St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin), the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix), the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda), Puerto Rico and ports in the Bahamas — including the cruise lines' private islands . Small vessels (and some larger vessels) might also call in Antigua, Anguilla and Dominica, as well as the tony island of St. Barts.

In the Western Caribbean, you might call on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Honduras, Belize and Mexican ports such as Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso. Some of these ports — in the thick of a strong Caribbean cruise season — can be lined up with large cruise ships; for example, you can find as many as seven ships calling on Cozumel on a busy day.

Beaches and water sports

If your fantasy is stretching out in the sun and splashing in the surf, you'll want to pick your Caribbean itinerary carefully so you can live the dream. When it comes to beaches, the Eastern Caribbean islands have the Western ones beat in most cases, but you can find sandy shores on most Caribbean itineraries.

With just a short cab ride from the cruise port, you can escape the throngs and find a quiet, sandy strand to call your own. After a few hours in the sun, you'll agree it was worth the effort, especially in Grand Turk and the Virgin Islands.

When it comes to water sports, some of the easiest opportunities to paddleboard, sail, kayak and parasail are available on the cruise lines' private islands, mainly located in the Bahamas. At Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay , Holland America 's Half Moon Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line 's Harvest Caye and Great Stirrup Cay, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee , and MSC Cruises' Ocean Cay , you'll find more opportunities to get out on the water than you could take advantage of in a day.

You can find visits to cruise line private islands on many weeklong or longer Eastern or Western Caribbean itineraries.

Shore excursions

bimini cruise dock

Where the Mexico ports of Cancun, Costa Maya and Progreso in the Western Caribbean shine is in historical sites, especially when it comes to the spectacular pre-Colombian Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza and Tulum. You can tour Mayan sites from Belize as well.

Equally impressive, though a totally different experience, is a day spent snorkeling or diving around the reefs off the Western Caribbean coasts of arid Grand Cayman (known for sea turtles and rays), Jamaica (known for underwater cliffs and unusually colorful coral) and Belize (where you might even get to see whale sharks).

That said, you'll have your pick of island tours, water-based activities and boat rides of all kinds on any itinerary you choose.

In both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, you'll find ports that are designed for shopping, with a mix of luxury boutiques and knickknack stores spread out around the cruise ship terminal.

In Nassau, Bahamas, the famous straw market sells everything from cheaply made souvenirs to local crafts, T-shirts and designer knockoffs. St. Thomas and Grand Cayman also offer a mix of jewelry shops and bric-a-brac, as well as duty-free liquor stores offering rum tastings.

If you luck into an itinerary with St. Barts on the roster, you'll find small French-Caribbean boutiques full of chic resortwear and elegant sandals, as well as rum made with Tahitian vanilla beans.

Bottom line

bimini cruise dock

While every cruise line has its own personality and a type of traveler that would find it ideal, so does every itinerary. You'll want to choose your route carefully and research the individual islands to make sure you are picking not only a ship but also a sailing that plays to your preferences.

That said, our advice is that if you're a beach lover who is looking for peace amid the palm trees, the Eastern Caribbean is the way to go. Those who sunburn easily and are looking for other entertainment than just the joy of their toes in the sand — including history buffs and divers — should consider the Western Caribbean their ideal choice.

If you're looking for a fun-in-the-sun vacation, with a mix of active and relaxing days, you'll be happy no matter where your Caribbean cruise takes you.
