Haneda, which welcomes travelers from all over the globe at its famous international airport, is a small district located in the Greater Tokyo Area. Despite being readily associated with Haneda Airport, the district is far from being limited to it. Here you can find a wide variety of places where you can get first-hand experience of the many different facets of Japanese culture, not to mention the incredible number of cafes and restaurants you can easily get to before your flight. Here are 20 things that you should check out while in Haneda!

Formally named Tokyo International Airport, Haneda Airport was officially inaugurated in 1931, but it was already in existence by 1917, under the name Haneda Airfield. The airfield was expanded after the Great Kanto earthquake – which struck Tokyo and the surrounding region in 1923 – to offer an alternative to the delivery of supplies by air, in case the railway network was damaged in a similar way again in the future. Currently, besides its regular services, Haneda Airport is almost exclusively the airport of choice from which the Japanese imperial family and prime minister depart from to go on official trips, and where dignitaries from other countries arrive in Japan. 

Haneda Airport has a long and interesting history, having even been seized by the American occupation forces for some years after the war. By the Tokyo Olympic Games of 1964, the airport started serving more and more tourists and it is now one of the most famous airports in Japan. How about taking the opportunity to visit and explore the history of some tourist spots around the airport? 

2. Jonanjima Seaside Park

Located along the Tokyo Bay and a 10-minute car ride from Haneda Airport, Jonanjima Seaside Park was opened to the public in 1991. The park hosts a variety of different attractions, including areas for camping and BBQ, a skateboard park, a dog run, clam digging spaces, and much more, not to mention you get an up-close view of airplanes departing from and arriving at Haneda Airport.

One of the main features of Jonanjima Seaside Park’s camping and BBQ facilities is that you can make use of them empty-handed. They have everything you might need at the park. Suppose you came prepared but forgot the coal, for example; you don't have to worry, because you can buy it there! As mentioned before, the park has a privileged view of airplanes coming and going from Haneda Airport, but you can also see ships and boats crossing the waters of Tokyo Bay as well. It is the perfect place to bring the family or go on a date. 

3. JAL Factory Tour SKY MUSEUM

Japan Airlines’ SKY MUSEUM is located a mere 2-minute walk from Shin Seibijo Station on the Tokyo Monorail line. The visit to the museum is followed by a tour through JAL’s hangar and maintenance facilities, where they explain the work of aircraft mechanics, flight crew, and flight attendants. The tour is particularly popular among parents with children and offers a valuable experience that can be enjoyed by adults and young children as well.  

During the 1 hour and 40 minutes long visit, you can learn about the history of Japan Airlines, get to know different airplane parts, see the cabin crew uniform throughout the years, and even take part in a class where you can ask in more detail about the company, how airplanes work, and anything else you would like to know more about. If you want, you can even try the uniforms and take some pictures to keep as a reminder of your visit! The museum shop has a full lineup of products that will certainly please aviation enthusiasts. 

4. Keihinjima Tsubasa Park

Opened to the public in 1971, Keihinjima Tsubasa Park is located right in front of Haneda Airport Runway B, providing a close-up view of airplanes landing and taking off. The park is frequently used by aviation enthusiasts and for shooting TV shows. If you love airplanes or are a fan of Japanese dramas (or maybe both!), Keihinjima Tsubasa Park is just the place you're looking for. 

The park is a fine strip of land extending 1.1 km along the bay. At the spacious green area in the northern part of the park, you can relax on the grass, play sports, fish, and much more. Even if you come empty-handed you can enjoy a nice barbeque here. It's a great place to visit for both adults and children! Keihinjima Tsubasa Park is the perfect place to spend a lazy day and enjoy the beautiful landscape that Haneda offers. 

5. Haneda Shrine

The origins of Haneda Shrine trace back approximately 800 years to when a prominent feudal lord of the region called Namekata Yojiro is said to have worshipped the deity Gozu Tenno. Affectionately called “Tenno-san,” this Shinto shrine was the place of veneration for the Tokugawa clan during the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1861, shogun Tokugawa Iesada came to the shrine to pray for the end of a smallpox epidemic that was ravaging Japan. His prayers were answered, and since then, worshipers from all over Japan come to the shrine to supplicate for the recovery of loved ones.  

Haneda Airport is one of the shrine’s parishioners, so many people come here to wish for a safe flight. It's also known as a matchmaking shrine because the mythological Susano-o, god of the sea and storms, and his wife, goddess Kushinada-hime, are enshrined here. Haneda Shrine is here for you whenever you are feeling uneasy about flying or are having trouble finding that special someone. 

6. Anamori Inari Shrine

In the year of 1804, during the reclamation of agricultural land that took place in Haneda, violent waves breached the sea embankment protecting the area and numerous villages were massively damaged by the flood. In order to appease the sea, villagers built a shrine dedicated to Inari, the god of agriculture, on top of the embankment. Their success in the task is said to have been the origin of Anamori Inari Shrine.

Blessings are said to be brought upon those who take some of the sacred sand from the shrine and scatter it around their house. Anamori Inari Shrine also has omamori (lucky charms) prepared with the sacred sand especially recommended for those who want to always be under the protection of the shrine. The shrine is only a 5-minute drive from Haneda Airport so you shouldn’t miss the chance to make a visit.

8. Haginaka Park

Located approximately a 5-minute walk from Otorii Station, Haginaka Park has a wide range of attractions that you can enjoy all year long. At the Traffic Park, for example, children have the chance to play in different vehicles, such as a steam locomotive, railway train, and a truck. The area even has a bicycle course equipped with traffic lights where they can practice their riding skills. The huge slide in the center of Garakuta Park is also very popular. 

Haginaka Park has a complete lineup of sports facilities as well, including baseball fields and an indoor pool open throughout the year. Different varieties of trees, such as cherry and ume (Japanese plum), can be found all along the park, making it the perfect spot for picnics and cherry blossom parties. An assembly hall is also located in its precincts, making the park a great place not only for children and their parents, but for the elderly and everyone else who lives in the area as well. 

9. Omori Shell Mounds Garden

Omori Shell Mounds Garden is located a 5-minute walk from Omori Station and around a 15-minute ride by car from Haneda Airport. It is here that American professor and zoologist Edward S. Morse excavated the Omori shell mound in a famous event that is even described in textbooks used in Japanese schools.

At Omori Shell Mounds Garden, you can find a statue of Professor Morse and you can learn more about the shell mounds and the civilization that produced them during the Jomon period (14,000 – 300 BCE) of Japanese history, not to mention the excavated area showing the layers of shells found in the region! In the center of the garden, there is an area called Jomon Park equipped with a water mist fountain that sends mist into the air 2 times per hour. If you come here during summertime you will see many kids playing around the fountain. 

10. Ikegami Honmonji

Located roughly a 20-minute car ride from Haneda Airport, Ikegami Honmonji is one of the most well-known sightseeing spots in the area. It is in this temple that the prominent Buddhist priest Nichiren, the founder to what became to be known as Nichiren Buddhism, passed away in during the 13th century. Every year on the eve of Nichiren’s death anniversary, October 12th, approximately 300,000 devotees visit the temple to pay their respects. 

Ikegami Honmonji houses many places of interest, including the oldest pagoda in the region of Kanto, erected by shogun Tokugawa Hidehata in 1607, and the Main Hall where a statue of Nichiren is kept. The temple is also famous for its cherry blossoms which create beautiful sceneries among the many historical buildings of its precincts. Candle nights and outdoor concerts are just a few examples among the numerous events that are held throughout the year at the temple, completely transforming the atmosphere of the place!

The store always has the newest releases of Mercedes Benz on display at its Gallery Space, so if you are a car fanatic, you shouldn’t miss the chance to take a look here!

The store also has a cafe that offers some great dishes, such as eggs benedict, tarts, and doughnuts, all of them decorated with the brand’s distinctive logo. The store is surrounded by luxury cars making it a great place to come on a date too! 

3. Edo Koji

Located at Haneda Airport International Passenger Terminal, Edo Koji recreates the old days of the Edo period. It is a place you should try and visit even if you don’t have a plane to catch. The area is filled with restaurants where you can try authentic Japanese food, such as Edomae sushi (sushi made with marinated fish), yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and oden (hot pot of vegetables and fish cakes, slowly simmered in broth).

Constructed with red pillars similar to those seen at the famous Kanda Shrine, Edo Koji is home to a variety of attractions, including a mock Edo-style theater built under the supervision of renowned Kabuki actor, Kanzaburo Nakamura the 18th. Everything in the area was built with natural wood and traditional cutting tools in order to recreate the architecture of those days. Foreign tourists, as well as locals, can feel what the Japanese culture is all about first hand at this well-known sightseeing spot in the middle of Haneda Airport. 

4. Tsurutontan Haneda Airport Branch

Tsurutontan is an udon (thick chewy noodles made of wheat flour) restaurant located at the above mentioned Edo Koji. With a beautiful inner design inspired by Japan’s four season aesthetics and culture, Tsurutontan attracts not only tourists but a wide range of Japanese customers who are about to leave the country or are coming back from abroad.

The secret behind Tsurutontan’s popularity is not limited to its easy access: their noodles are 70 cm long! On top of it, you can order up to three extra servings of noodles entirely free of charge. They also have a great variety of seasonal and limited dishes that you can only eat at this branch of the restaurant. This is the perfect place to eat if you want to have a real taste of Japanese food. 

5. Yojiya Cafe Haneda Airport Terminal 1 Branch

Yojiya is a famous brand from Kyoto that is known countrywide for the emblematic female face printed on the package of its beauty products. Yojiya Cafe, which is located in Haneda Airport Terminal 1, not only sells the brand’s goods, including their famous aburatori-gami (oil blotting paper), but also offers a space where customers can enjoy a relaxing teatime.

Yojiya Cafe offers a wide variety of dishes and its beautiful lattes are very popular among the clientele. The store’s relaxing atmosphere provides the perfect place to come with a group of girlfriends or on a date. Also, this is one of the stores where you can get your hands on the Aloe Aburatori-gami, which is limited to Haneda Airport. Yojiya has another location in Terminal 2 as well but there is no cafe area there. 

5 Hidden Gems to Visit in Haneda

Ota City Tourist Information Center is located right next to Keikyu-Kamata Station. The center is closely involved with the local community and can provide you with great tips about sightseeing places and hands-on cultural experiences. Information is available in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean, so the center is a real hidden gem for travelers in Japan.

The center holds events about Japanese culture on a regular basis and anyone can participate. There are presentations about Japanese calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, kimono dressing workshops, origami classes, and much more. There are even classes for local residents who want to learn English. Here you can also find locally made sweets and Japanese sake for sale. With so much on offer, how about starting your visit to Haneda at Ota City Tourist Information Center? 

2. Book Cafe Uduki

Book Cafe Uduki is located very near Anamori Inari Shrine, a 5-minute ride by car from Haneda Airport. Here you can order a drink, grab one of the numerous books the cafe has available and read while you wait for your flight. Unwind with the sound of classical music and Latin rhythms in a very relaxed atmosphere. 

Uduki has a variety of popular dishes, including matcha (green tea), breakfast sets, and their famous Haneda puddings. They also serve alcoholic beverages so you are more than welcome to drop by at night too. Their bookshelves are filled with titles somewhat different than what you would expect from a similar cafe. It's the kind of place you always end up staying more than you planned.

Located a few seconds away from Otorii Station’s ticket gate, bb.q OLIVE CHICKEN cafe is the number one fried chicken chain restaurant from South Korea, with more than 2,500 stores in 25 different countries. The chain is renowned for the crispy chicken and variety of sauces it offers. Gather some friends or come on a date and enjoy their delicious chicken in one of the tables. 

With a host of different foods, such as the spicy Yangnyeom Chicken, Olive Chicken Curry Rice, and their signature menu, the Golden Olive Chicken, bb.q OLIVE CHICKEN cafe has everything to please people who enjoy good food. They also have a wide variety of lighter dishes, such as sandwiches and salads, not to mention their hamburger which is very reasonably priced. In addition to tables, the restaurant is also furnished with a counter, so if you are after a quick bite this place is for you. 

You'll be able to find hacco a 3-minute walk from Anamori-inari Station and right next to an elementary school. Choose a seat on the sofa, counter, or tables in this lovely coffee shop situated on the 5th floor and enjoy some alone time. Or, if you wish, bring some friends or that special someone and enjoy the relaxing European-style atmosphere of this hidden gem of a shop.

With a menu that includes freshly baked muffins and drinks served in big gorgeous cups, you will be taking pictures of everything here before you even realize it! Besides the food and drinks, hacco also sells home accessories and holds art exhibitions. This lovely coffee shop only opens during lunch hours from Tuesday to Saturday, so if you are ever in the area on one of these days, don’t miss the chance to drop by. 

5. Rengetsu

Rengetsu is a cafe situated right next to Ikegami Honmonji. Cherished by visitors to the temple since its conception, Rengetsu was built in the early 1900s and has previously been a soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurant, an inn, and a banquet hall for wedding parties. Its beautiful architecture, typical of old Japanese houses, makes you feel as if you went back in time. 

In addition to its lunch menu, Rengetsu features a great selection of desserts. The hojicha (rosted green tea) pudding has been an all-time favorite among guests since it first opened. There is also a wide variety of juices and flavored milks which will definitely be well received by children! Whenever you are sightseeing around Ikegami Honmonji, come take a break and relax a little at Rengetsu.

7 Exciting Places to Visit Near Haneda Airport! Two Days in Kawasaki, Ota, and Shinagawa

Haneda Airport, an excellent transportation hub, is one of the major gateways for those visiting Tokyo. Ota City, Shinagawa City, and Kawasaki City are located near the airport and offer a variety of wonderful places to visit. This article features a two-day tour of seven destinations in this area.

Two-Day Tour of Great Places to Visit near Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport , or Tokyo International Airport , has undergone major changes in recent years. The international terminal is now called Terminal 3. Additionally, the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail—the main transportation lines for accessing the airport—have been changed to Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station.

However, these changes are not only occurring inside the airport. There are changes in areas surrounding the airport, such as Ota and Shinagawa, which are part of Tokyo, and Kawasaki City.

This article recommends a two-day itinerary of seven exciting places to visit in this area. This itinerary was created based on the latest information, including some hot spots that will make you feel nostalgic!

1. Day One at Sundown: Footbaths and Spectacular Views at HANEDA INNOVATION CITY

HANEDA INNOVATION CITY is a large-scale complex connected to Tenkubashi Station along the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail. It is the next stop from Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station.

This facility is based on cutting-edge research and culture.

It consists of company offices developing the latest technology, restaurants, and hotels featuring Japanese culture, a hall for live performances, and a relaxation spot.

At HANEDA INNOVATION CITY, you'll find the Ashiyu Sky Deck furnished with a foot bath. Visitors can experience this soothing service free of charge.

Since Haneda Airport is visible from the Sky Deck, visitors can enjoy the fusion of airplanes, a product of modern technology, and a traditional foot bath.

The sky deck is frequented by amateur photographers taking snapshots of the sunrise, sunset, and nighttime view. Depending on the weather, you can see Mt. Fuji, the iconic mountain of Japan, from here!

The site also has a towel vending machine, so visitors don't need to worry about bringing something to dry their feet.

2. Day One at Night: A Heaven for Budget Gourmet Bites at Kamata Station

For dinner on the first night, let's visit the area around Kamata Station to taste the local cuisine. The station is connected to the JR Keihin Tohoku, Keikyu, and Tokyu lines.

You'll discover a wide variety of budget-friendly eateries that serve crispy-winged gyoza, ramen noodles, and tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlets) along the streets. The area turns even more lively at night when the izakaya pubs start to open.

3. Day Two in the Early Morning: Visit Kawasaki Daishi to Ward off Bad Luck

Kawasaki Daishi (Kongozan Kinjoin Heikenji) is a temple with over 890 years of history.

From Kamata Station, it takes about 30 minutes by train to reach the temple. Ride the JR Keihin Tohoku Line to Kawasaki, switch to the Keikyu Daishi Line, and get off at Kawasaki Daishi Station. It is an eight-minute walk to the temple.

The Nakamise Dori shopping street is located along the approach to the temple. You'll find shops selling daruma dolls to ward off evil, Japanese confections, and rice crackers.

The most famous local confection is the kuzu-mochi, a gelatinous dessert served with soybean flour and sugar cane syrup. There are various dishes to be savored during a stroll while enjoying the sights.

Kawasaki Daishi was founded in the year 1128. A statue of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism, is enshrined in the main hall.

At the temple, goma (fire) rituals are performed daily to fulfill visitors' wishes, including warding off evil. Goma, or "homa" in Sanskrit, is a ceremony of cleansing worldly desires by the fire emanating from Buddha's wisdom.

4. Day Two in the Morning: Be Smitten by Cuteness at Noborito Station

Noborito Station , servicing the JR and Odakyu Lines, is the nearest station to the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum.

After off-boarding the Odakyu Line at Noborito Station, you'll notice the interior filled with motifs inspired by Doraemon, a very popular manga and animation character in Japan, created by manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio.

The ticket gates are painted in Doraemon colors, and the bell on Doraemon's collar is visible on the station's sign, restrooms, and lockers.

Elevators are designed with the iconic "Dokodemo Door" ("Anywhere Door"), which appears in the Doraemon comic series. Visitors will have fun wondering if they might be teleported somewhere.

Additionally, Odakyu Noborito Station has many features that will immerse you in the world of Doraemon!

5. Day Two in the Morning: Return to Childhood at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum

Kawasaki Fujiko F. Fujio Museum is a facility displaying the works of Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator behind Doraemon. Museum-goers of all ages can experience his art via original drawings and other works.

You may think that the exhibitions are limited to Doraemon. However, the museum shows aspects of the author's life unknown to the public alongside his inspirations and creative process.

In addition to Doraemon, a famous character worldwide, there are all-time favorites such as Kiteretsu Daihyakka and Perman on display.

At the museum, visitors can meet the characters created by Fujiko F. Fujio.

"Harappa," an outdoor garden on the third floor, features Korosuke, Perman, and Q-Taro, stirring the childhood memory of visitors. Woodcutter's Pond, one of Doraemon's gadgets, is re-created in the exhibition room on the second floor alongside a reimagined Gian (Big G), who appears clean-cut and gentle.

6. Day Two in the Afternoon: Have a Great Time Shopping at Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street

Togoshi Ginza , located near Haneda Airport, is the longest shopping street in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The total length stretches for 1.3 kilometers.

It is accessible from either Togoshi Station (Toei Asakusa Line) or Togoshi-Ginza Station (Tokyu Ikegami Line).

While many places in Japan have "Ginza" in their name, Togoshi Ginza is said to be the first of its kind.

The original Ginza district in Tokyo's Chuo Ward was devastated by the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. The legend goes that Togoshi residents removed the debris, using it to repair local roads. This ended up with the street being named Togoshi Ginza.

More than 350 shops line the street. Cars are temporarily shut out daily, so pedestrians can enjoy shopping without worrying about vehicles.

Can you leave Haneda Airport during a layover?

As of 2023, there are 70 countries have the right to enter Japan without a visa for short stays.

Passport holders from the United States, Canada, Singapore, United Kingdom, and Australia are allowed to leave the airport during a layover in Japan. Holders of passports from these countries are exempt from obtaining a visa for short-term stays.

Passport holders from India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are exempt from obtaining a Visa based on specific conditions.

Passport holders from the Philippines, Vietnam, India, China are required to obtain a visa.

For travelers from other countries, please refer to the guidance by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan .

Haneda Innovation City is located just one station away from Haneda Airport Terminal 3, connected to Tenkubashi Station on the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail. It partially opened in 2020 and is set for its grand opening on November 16, 2023.

Izumi Tenku no Yu

Izumi Tenku no Yu is a 24-hour spa facility located in Haneda Airport Garden, which is directly connected to Haneda Airport Terminal 3. The spa offers a variety of services including hot springs, saunas, stone saunas, and dining options.

The cost for adults is 4,800 yen, while children from 4 years old to elementary school age are charged 2,000 yen.

Guests staying at Hotel Villa Fontaine receive a discount: 2,000 yen off for adults and 1,000 yen off for children. Face towels and bath towels are included, and adults also receive loungewear and access to the stone sauna.

Please note that the bathing area is closed for cleaning from 10 a.m. to midday. Additionally, reclining chairs are available, but their number is limited.

Anamori Inari Shrine

The Anaishi Inari Shrine is renowned for its thousands of torii gates. During the Edo period, the area where Haneda Airport now stands was a tidal flat, which was later reclaimed and developed.

However, due to the constant threat of flooding in this area, a shrine was built for protection.

This shrine was named “Anaishi Inari Daimyojin,” symbolizing the deity that protects the fields from the damages caused by tidal waves.

The shrine flourished, and the donation of red torii gates became a trend. In 1911, an astonishing 46,797 torii gates were dedicated. After the war, the shrine was relocated to its current location. The number of torii gates reduced to around 1,000, but the shrine continues to attract numerous visitors and boasts many torii gates.

Today, it’s also known as a shrine for aviation and travel safety. It’s conveniently located just 6 minutes by car and 12 minutes by train from Haneda Airport.

14 Top Things To Do In Haneda, Japan

Introduction

Tokyo is one of the most visited cities in the world, and with good reason. Tokyo has something for everyone to enjoy, from exciting temples and shrines to modern culinary options. However, there are many other places to visit in Japan outside of Tokyo that can be just as fun and exciting. One such place is Haneda Airport, located 28 km (17 miles) southeast of central Tokyo and accessible by train or shuttle bus from Haneda Airport Station on the Keikyu Line (Train) or Yokohama City Air Terminal Station on the Toei Oedo Line (Shuttle Bus).

Toei Oedo Line

The Toei Oedo line is a monorail line that runs from Shimbashi Station to Haneda Airport. The line has 11 stations and is 11.4km long, making it the third-longest monorail system in Japan. It was opened in 1994, but the track itself was initially built by the Keihin Electric Railway Co., Ltd., who then transferred ownership over to Toei in 1998. The Toei Oedo line is owned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei) and is operated by Keisei Electric Railway Co., Ltd.

Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line

The Aqua Line is a train that runs across Tokyo Bay, connecting central Tokyo with Haneda Airport. It's a short distance---only 12 stops---but it's a fun way to see the city and get some fresh air at the same time.

The Aqua Line is open from 6:00 am until 11:30 pm (the last train departs at 10:50 pm). Fares range from 200 yen to 400 yen depending on how far you ride, with reduced fares for children under 6 years old and seniors over 65 years old. You can purchase your ticket before boarding or directly from the conductor on board---just remember to validate your ticket at one of the orange machines before entering any station!

While riding this train, keep an eye out for some beautiful views of Mount Fuji in between stretches of the urban landscape as well as nearby islands such as Odaiba and Miyakejima.

Hamarikyu Gardens

You'll find Hamarikyu Gardens in the northeast corner of Odaiba, along the waterfront. The garden is open year-round, but most of its facilities are closed during the winter.

The name Hamarikyu translates as "sea and mooring place" and was given by Tokugawa Iemitsu, who built the garden at this exact location in 1631.

The main feature of this six-hectare landscape is a pond that is crossed by two bridges: one wooden bridge with an artistic wind chime on top (which you can cross for free) and another stone bridge that costs 100 yen per person to cross (300 yen per couple).

Odaiba Kaihin Park

Odaiba Kaihin Park is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. Located on Odaiba Island, just east of Tokyo Bay, this park features an open-air theater that hosts musical performances and festivals throughout the year. You can also take a ride on one of its popular Ferris wheels or enjoy an evening stroll through its cherry blossom-lined paths.

The park offers plenty of places to eat as well---from traditional Japanese cuisine at sushi shops to Western-style food at fast food restaurants like McDonald's and KFC. For those who fancy themselves connoisseurs (or simply want to try something different), there are even several high-end establishments such as La Tour D'Argent where you can sample French cuisine with breathtaking views over Tokyo Bay that come with a hefty price tag ($$$$).

If you're coming from Haneda Airport then taking the monorail might be your best bet. It will stop at various stations along its route before arriving at Odaiba Kaihin Park station where it will drop passengers off near exit 8A or B depending on which direction they're headed in--just follow signs for "Odiba" or "Tokyo" until reaching these exits!

National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation is a museum of science, technology, and innovation. It's located in Odaiba, which is a man-made island in Tokyo Bay. It opened in 1996 and was designed by architect Toyo Ito.

The museum has a planetarium that shows films about space, stars, and constellations through the use of high-quality digital projectors. You can also see planets like Mercury or Mars with your own eyes through telescopes located on the roof of the building.

There's also an IMAX theater that shows short films about science every day as well as longer movies during its regular screenings (Japanese only). How to Access Haneda Airport from Central Tokyo?

When accessing Haneda Airport from central Tokyo, it is recommended to use either the Tokyo Monorail or the Keikyu Railway.

If you are using the Tokyo Monorail, you can reach the airport from Hamamatsucho Station in approximately 13 minutes. Similarly, if you opt for the Keikyu Railway, you can access the airport from Shinagawa Station in about the same time.

The Tokyo Monorail has two stations: ‘Terminal 1 & 2 Station’ and ‘Terminal 3 Station’. The Keikyu Railway is divided into three stations, one each for Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. As the terminal you need depends on the airline you are flying with, please be careful not to get off at the wrong station.

Haneda Airpor t is composed of three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. We will explain the recommended points of interest for each terminal.

When touring the tourist spots of each terminal, it is advisable to use the free shuttle bus service available for inter-terminal travel. The free shuttle bus allows you to move between the three terminals in about 10 minutes.

Terminal 1 Overview

Firstly, let’s introduce the highlights of Terminal 1, where domestic flights from airlines such as Japan Airlines, Japan Transocean Air, and Skymark Airlines arrive and depart.

Observation Deck

A favor ite spot for airplane enthusiasts, where one can watch planes departing to various parts of Japan, is the observation deck located on the rooftop of Te rminal 1.

One of the reasons the observation deck at Haneda Airport’s Terminal 1 is popular among fans is that it features larger-sized fences instead of finer mesh ones, making it easier for visitors to view the airplanes. Additionally, there are areas with roofs to protect from rain and strong sunlight.

Haneda Aviation Shrine

Originally, it was a shrine on the rooftop of the old Terminal 1, where pilots and cabin crew would pray for safe flights. However, it was relocated to its current location to coincide with the terminal’s renovation.

Nowadays, because of its association with the phrase ‘planes do not crash,’ it is also known as the ‘Never Crash Shrine’. Students and others often visit to pray for success in exams and tests.

Although it is located in a somewhat inconspicuous place, if you are using the airport for traveling to exams or similar occasions, consider visiting for a prayer of success.

Next, I will introduce the highlights of Terminal 2, where domestic flights from All Nippon Airways (ANA), AIRDO, and Solaseed Air arrive and depart.

Additionally, on the 5th floor of Terminal 2, there is an indoor observation space called FLIGHT DECK TOKYO. This area can be used without concern for weather or temperature, so please consider stopping by here on days with bad weather.

UPPER DECKTOKYO

When you want to enjoy delicious gourmet food at Terminal 2, UPPER DECK TOKYO on the 3rd floor is recommended.

Located right above the departure lobby, this area is a food court where you can enjoy dishes from eight countries including Italy, Turkey, and Spain, with nine different types of cuisine.

The chairs and tables are also designed with care, making it a stylish food court that does not feel casual and is popular among visitors.

Finally, I will introduce the highlights of Terminal 3, which is used for international flights arriving and departing from Haneda.

The area features buildings with a warm wooden exterior and gentle lantern lights. It is lined with shops where you can enjoy Japanese food culture, including yakitor i, oden, and Edo-style sushi. There are also photogenic spots like wooden benches with bright red umbrellas, which are particularly popular among foreign tourists as places to rest and take pictures.

Additionally, there are shops selling Japanese-style goods such as traditional crafts and miscellaneous goods, making it a great area for choosing souvenirs for friends overseas.

TOKYO POP TOWN

TOKYO PO P TOWN is a shopping zone composed of two areas: ‘HOT ZONE’ and ‘COOL ZONE’.

The Haneda Airport Garden, a newly opened mixed-use commercial facility directly connected to Terminal 3 of Haneda Airport in 2023, is also a spot to enjoy when visiting Haneda Airport.

Inside the facility, there are about 80 shops including stores selling local specialties from various regions of Japan and restaurants. It also houses a 1,717-room airport hotel.

A special highlight is the ‘ Izumi Tenku no Yu ‘, which is available 24 hours a day. Here, you can soak in the hot springs while viewing airplanes taking off and landing at Haneda Airport, as well as Mount Fuji. There’s also an open-air bath, so you can enjoy the natural hot springs while immersed in a sense of openness.

With a stone sauna and dining area also available, it offers various uses, such as a place to relax before a flight or after arriving on a late-night flight.

11 best things to do at Haneda Airport Garden, the new lifestyle complex at Haneda T3

The new complex at Tokyo's Haneda Airport T3 has shops, restaurants and a spa to enjoy while waiting for your flight

Haneda Airport is less than an hour from popular Tokyo destinations like Asakusa, Shibuya and Shinjuku, making it the city's most convenient airport. It also has plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you busy while waiting for your flight. You can easily hop between the three terminals, too, by using the free shuttle buses .

On your next trip to Haneda Airport, it's worth making a beeline for Terminal 3 to visit Haneda Airport Garden , which opened in January 2023. This new complex features 80 new restaurants, cafés and shops. What's more, it also boasts two hotels plus a spa with an outdoor hot spring.

To help you make the most of this new complex, we've compiled a list of the 11 best things you can do at Haneda Airport Garden.

Relax in a rooftop onsen

• Haneda Airport

Izumi Tenku no Yu is a 24-hour spa directly connected to Haneda Airport Terminal 3, featuring around a dozen hot springs and baths. Relax in the outdoor bath while watching planes come and go, and even catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji on clear days. There are also plenty of couches and reclining chairs, plus dry, steam and stone saunas. 

It costs ¥4,800 for adults (¥4,000 between 1am to 5am) and ¥2,000 for primary school students and under. The admission fee includes a face towel, bath towel and access to the entire facility. Those staying at Hotel Villa Fontine receive a ¥2,000 discount (¥1,000 for children).

Do note that baths are not available between 10am to 1pm daily, and that hotel guests have priority entering Izumi Tenku no Yu if the facility reaches capacity.

Feast on curry

• Restaurants

Enjoy one last filling meal before you fly out of Tokyo at Japan Loves Curry. This space actually houses two curry restaurants: Kanazawa-born chain Go Go Curry and Pakistani venue Siddique.

Go Go Curry’s most popular dish is the pork loin katsu curry (from ¥950) served over white rice and with a side of shredded cabbage. Siddique, meanwhile, is well known for its vegetarian saag paneer (¥1,200), chicken biriyani (¥1,200) and kebab curry rice (¥1,100), which are all halal certified.

Pick up a Japanese tea souvenir

This tea shop from Shizuoka prefecture sells a wide selection of tea leaves, teaware and antique tableware. The Haneda-exclusive Art Print Package Teabag Collection makes for a nice souvenir; it's available in six flavours including matcha and hojicha.  You’ll also find rare selections of tokoname and nabeshima pottery teapots and teacups as well.  

Shop for a unique umbrella

Fukui Yougasa has been selling handmade umbrellas since 1972 in Fukui prefecture and stocks an impressive range at this store. You can choose from six kinds of products including a compact umbrella that easily fits in a handbag, parasols that protect you from UV rays and a completely water-resistant umbrella that doesn’t collect raindrops.  

Customisation is also possible. You can pick out your favourite fabric, colour, design, size, handle and even the angle of the canopy to make your own personal umbrella.

Get creative with wooden puzzles

• Toys and games

Takumi has opened its first physical store inside Haneda Airport selling its popular puzzle sets. Each set comes with a series of pieces designed by Japanese craftsmen, which you can construct into useful boxes, characters, animals, vehicles and even famous landmarks.

There are three main types of puzzles offered depending on the type of material –  the wooden ‘ki-gu-mi’, paper ‘si-gu-mi’ and bamboo ‘wa-gu-mi’. These sets don’t require any additional tools to assemble, but the ‘eugy’ wooden series comes with glue to stick the pieces together.

Snack on traditional Japanese sweets

This Japanese confectionery store from Ebisu specialises in kintsuba, a red bean paste block covered in a thin layer of batter made with flour and water. The kintsuba here have flavours infused into the batter and are sweetened with sudaki cane sugar.

You’ll find traditional Japanese flavours like black bean, matcha, sweet potato and black sugar, as well as more Western flavours like double chocolate and rum raisin. 

Keep an eye out for seasonal offerings like cherry, chocolate orange, blueberry, chocolate banana, muscat grape and coffee as well. While this sweet treat pairs well with a warm cup of green tea, it also goes nicely with sake.

The wrapping paper featuring Mt Fuji and cherry blossoms are designed by Morio Nakajima, a bathhouse muralist. After you eat your kintsuba, you can use the wrapper to make origami paper cranes. 

Upgrade your tableware

Long-established tableware store Kichijoji Kikuya has been selling traditional Japanese glassware, lacquerware and kitchen sundries since 1949. Here you’ll find beautiful rice bowls, cups, saucers and sake sets with intricate Japanese illustrations of cherry blossoms and Mt Fuji. There are also traditional regional crafts like Nanbu tekki teapots, iron kettles and Arita-yaki porcelain pottery.

It can be quite pricey shopping here, but there are budget-friendly gifts in the form of chopstick rests and manekineko (beckoning cat) figurines.

Dine on classic Japanese food

This Edo-themed food hall is the place to enjoy your favourite Japanese food before you fly out.  There’s a mouthwatering array of options including cold soba noodles with shrimp tempura, kaisendon (sashimi over rice) with generous slices of tuna sashimi, shoyu (soy sauce) ramen, and a 100 percent beef hamburger with grated daikon. You won’t leave Japan feeling hungry.

Buy some artistic souvenirs

Tobi-Bito Sweets Tokyo is not only limited to souvenirs from Tokyo. Here you’ll find Kit-Kat, Hi-Chew candy, rice crackers and all sorts of other regional snacks from around Japan. 

You can even get a range of goods licensed by Tokyo National Museum , including postcards, folders and other stationery items. But we highly recommend getting the shrimp crackers and cookies printed with ukiyo-e artworks by Japanese artists Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai, or the kompeito (Japanese sugar candy) and chocolates in artistic packaging.

Choose some fancy socks

The socks at Ande Tokyo are handcrafted in Japan using linen yarn and Mino Japanese washi paper yarn. This paper yarn is known for being tough, waterproof and for having antibacterial properties. It’s also much lighter compared to cotton and provides good ventilation for the feet. 

The socks come in different lengths ranging from ankle socks to those that go up to your calves. You can choose a simple mono-colour that goes with just about any outfit, or pick something with a funky design. 

The red and white packaging features the Japanese flag and is made entirely with recycled paper, making a pair of these socks a perfect souvenir from your trip.

Spend a comfortable night at the airport

Hotel Villa Fontaine at Haneda Airport is separated into two different sections. The Grand Hotel has several types of Western and Japanese-style rooms, plus wheelchair-accessible options. What’s more, this hotel has a rooftop hot spring with panoramic views of the city.

The Premia Hotel, on the other hand, has 160 guest rooms that come in six different types. It’s conveniently connected to Terminal 3 and you can enter the hotel with your baggage carts. The hotel also has two restaurants and a bar with views of the Tama River.

Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda Airport (Haneda), is one of the two major airports serving the greater Tokyo area, the other being Narita International Airport (Narita). Haneda is located in Ōta, the largest of the 23 districts in Tokyo Prefecture, just 15 kilometers south of Tokyo Station and is closer to central Tokyo compared to Narita, which is located about 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo in Narita, Chiba.

In the past, Haneda was used primarily for domestic flights in Japan. Then, in 2010, it launched its new international terminal, now called Terminal 3, making it a convenient airport for international travelers visiting Tokyo.

Haneda Airport’s Terminals

The airport is divided into three terminals, with Terminals 1 and 2 handling mostly domestic flights and Terminal 3 operating mostly international flights. (See Highlights below for more information).

Travel between terminals is easy with the airport’s free and frequent shuttle buses that have travel times of less than 10 minutes.

Passengers with transfers between international flights (international to international, domestic to international, or international to domestic) can acquire a Transit Boarding Ticket for the Keikyu Line or Tokyo Monorail free of charge. These rail services travel between Terminals 1 and 3 and Terminals 2 and 3. Travelers with international flight transfers can also utilize the airport’s Transit Bus Service, which runs every 15 minutes and, similarly, travels between Terminals 1 and 3 and Terminals 2 and 3.

Terminals 1 and 2 are linked via a 400 meters long moving walkway.

Haneda provides a plethora of services to ensure that guests’ travels go as smoothly as possible. Some essential travel services include ATM’s, money exchange, travel insurance, luggage storage, coin lockers, and Wi-Fi rental, to name a few. The airport also has clinics and drugstores on-site.

In addition to its convenient offerings, the airport also prides itself on creating comfortable and enjoyable experiences for travelers. For instance, guests can relax in lounges, unwind in massage chairs, or refresh themselves in the shower rooms.

For passengers with long layovers, the airport is home to three hotels (one in each terminal). Guests can stay at First Cabin (capsule hotel) in Terminal 1, Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu in Terminal 2, or The Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Haneda in Terminal 3. Haneda also connects travelers to hotels in the surrounding area via free shuttle services.

All three terminals have convenient car rental counters, including popular Japanese companies such as Nippon Rent-A-Car and Orix Rent-A-Car.

Enjoy Haneda Airport!

Apart from its efficient and excellent travel services, Haneda also has no shortage of restaurants and shops for guests to pass the time. With early morning, late night, and 24 hour restaurants located before and after security checks, passengers will not be disappointed. The restaurants sell Japanese, Western, Chinese, cafe, and fast food, as well as alcohol at bars. Terminal 3 is home to an especially fun eating experience at Edo Ko-ji, which is a traditional styled Japanese “street” lined with restaurants.

After refueling with some food, guests can peruse the airport’s shops during their downtime and pick up some last minute souvenirs. Terminals 1 and 2

Terminals 1 and 2 are home to the two major Japanese domestic airlines Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) as well as AIR DO, SKYMARK, Solaseed Air, and Star Flyer. JAL primarily operates out of Terminal 1, while ANA mainly uses Terminal 2. Although both terminals mostly handle domestic flights, Terminal 2 runs a few international ANA flights.

In addition to international flights via Japanese airlines ANA, JAL, and Peach, Terminal 3 also hosts a number of foreign airlines from around the world, including Air Canada, Air China, Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, and Korean Air. Edo Ko-ji, located in Terminal 3, is a traditional styled Japanese “street” lined with restaurants and shops. The warm red and wooden tones of the area create an inviting atmosphere and transport visitors from the modernly designed airport to Japan’s Edo past. How to Get There

Reach Haneda Airport by train, monorail, bus or taxi.

By train: Take the JR Yamanote Line to Shinagawa. From there, transfer to the Keikyu Airport Line bound for Haneda Airport. Journeys from Shinagawa can take up to 30 minutes.

By monorail: Departing from JR Hamamatsucho Station, also on the Yamanote Line, the Tokyo Monorail provides a scenic seaside journey to Haneda Airport. Airport Express services take as little as 13 minutes.

By bus: A number of limousine buses service Haneda Airport from major train stations and hotels in the greater Tokyo area.

By taxi: Various providers offer flat-rate taxi services to and from Haneda Airport. Late-night services and expressway surcharges cost extra.

When planning your journey, be aware that public transport in Tokyo doesn't run 24 hours. The first connections to the airport via the Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu Railways reach Terminal 3 around 5:15 and 5:30. Early morning bus services from the center of Tokyo and Yokohama start arriving around 4:30. For late-night arrivals, the last trains and buses into the city end just after midnight.

What to do when you're not flying

As the busiest airport in Japan (and one of the top five busiest in the world), Haneda has everything you'd expect from a modern domestic and international airport. Free Wi-Fi, airport lounges, and a variety of dining and shopping options are all at hand.

Unique to Haneda, Edo Alley is a shopping and dining area in Terminal 3 that recreates an Edo streetscape, giving a feel for Tokyo of yesteryear. To enhance the effect, Edo Alley is accessed by crossing a replica of Nihonbashi, the historic center point of all roads in Japan. If you're in Terminal 1, look for Haneda's own aviation shrine and pray for a safe flight.

For more modern Japan, visit Tokyo Pop Town, which stocks a wide array of anime, manga, and character merchandise. Or consider renting a "Robohon" for a robot guided tour.
