Italy - Private Travel
In Italy, art and life are the same thing. With more cultural sites than anywhere else, Italy is a trove of fascinating treasures, from the canals of Venice to the cobblestone streets of Palermo.
A trove of fascinating treasures from the canals of Venice to the cobblestone streets of Palermo.
Italy’s nickname, Bel Paese “Beautiful Country,” is supremely apt. The scenery from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea delivers a varied tableau – mountains and lakes, volcanos and caves, rolling countryside, and sandy beaches. You simply have to determine the spots that seem to call your name. The international influence of Italy’s extraordinary gastronomy and its inspiring fashion is infused into the social and cultural fabric of the entire world. And the way the people appreciate the finer things in life couldn’t make a luxury vacation here more appealing.

What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? A ladies' food and shopping trip across Italy, including Rome, Lake Como, Sorrento, Cinque Terre and Portofino. It was such a fun trip to plan from beginning to end and the ladies enjoyed every minute of it and planned to do it again!
Natalie Thomson
What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? I booked a group of 14-16 people on a Uniworld River Cruise, who wanted to include a cycling trip. I researched several companies asking if they would follow our river cruise down the Rhine. There were a lot of components, but it turned out perfect!

Custom Trip to Italy 2023
Dear Stefania, Our time in Italy was fascinating with your help. We had a great time and were able to enjoy all Italy had to offer with the easy navigation. We are truly spoiled with all the service we had from the tours and drivers you arranged. The chef in Tuscany was so inviting and took such good care of us... We had a great day learning so much, not just about cooking but about the area, the farming and the Italian lifestyle. The boys were just thrilled with the experience. Rome was fascinating with all the history and we absolutely loved the hotel and the rooftop patio. The tours in Rome were so helpful to teach us the history. The travel to Positano was easy as the driver had all the work to do while we enjoyed the views and became familiar with the area. We had great weather and enjoyed the beach, hiking and shopping while we explored the area. Thank you for planning such a great trip. We very much enjoyed our time in Italy and cannot wait to go back. Sincerely, Bob and Evelyn V. Columbus, OH
We've returned, Enrico, and before I get mired in several hundred emails in my inbox, I want to offer my compliments and thanks for what you arranged for us. Villa I Barronci was simply lovely -- such a peaceful, relaxing, comfortable place in a delightful setting. The Maalot was a magnificent place. We thought it was perfectly located as well. The staff was friendly and helpful. So thanks for your arrangements and assistance with our questions and preferences. All in all, we view this as having been a really wonderful vacation. Ray C. Arlington, VA
Custom Italy Honeymoon Trip
Stefania - George and I returned last night from our trip of a lifetime! I keep telling people that it felt like a dream. So with laundry and luggage on the floor, I wanted to stop and send you this message! That tells you just how much we enjoyed our trip. Every detail, every transfer, restaurant recommendation, etc. was spot on. We could not have asked for better insight or a better planned trip. The tours.... oh the tours... were fantasic. We learned so much and while we expected the guides to be nice, we were not prepared for just how thorough and nice they would be. Not to mention funny! We enjoyed them as much as we did the sights that they led us through. The hotels were amazing as well. The rooms were great, but their locations were exactly where we needed to be to have the trip we sought after. But I must say that when we stepped onto the property at Hotel Caruso, I felt like we had stepped into a postcard. The flowers and the views were breathtaking. We spent a lot of time just trying to take it all in. There are no words that I can type, and even with a minor dissertation I couldn't cover it all. I have uploaded over 700 pictures and came home 8 pounds heavier! And this morning I went to the Italian grocer/importer to get my fresh mozzarella. I can't even eat food the way I used to. You planned a trip and anniversary celebration that can never be topped. We thank you!! Susan & George M. Charlotte North Caroline

Italy has been a popular travel destination for over 2000 years. What's not to like? Natural and cultural opulence abounds, and luxury and style are endemic. For art aficionados, part of ancient Rome seems buried under every doormat, Renaissance Florence is an open-air museum, and the next medieval fresco cycle is just a hill town away. For gourmets, there's the olive oil of Tuscany, the pasta of Bologna, the seafood of Venice, the wine of Chianti, and for dessert, the pastries of Naples. For sun worshippers, the deep blue Adriatic washes the white sand beaches of Puglia, and the Tyrrhenian brushes against the tiny harbors and steep cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. Italy is where monks chant in a Romanesque abbey, whitewashed houses stand next to fields of sunflowers, artisan workshops and Prada outlets both thrive, and aristocratic villas are converted into five-star hotels.

Luxury Italy Vacations & Tours
Why should you travel to italy with us.
Italy fires your imagination; with the slick purr of an Alfa Romeo, and the staggered terraces of the Amalfi Coast. It’s a country that sells itself. So why go with us?
Details, details, details – that’s why. A sommelier-guided tour of Rome’s best enoteche (wine bars). A private table at Sarah Cicolini’s Appio-Latino restaurant. In Sicily, a luxury picnic amongst the 2,000-year-old ruins of the Valley of Temples, and in the wild North: a trek into the dramatic ‘pale hills’ of the Dolomites, searching for mountain air, natural wine, and a canopy of stars. This is ideal stuff for families, friends, lovers, and solo travelers. But wherever you decide to go, it’s our job to create a perfectly bespoke travel itinerary, and not simply to sell you what’s gone before. That would be far too easy. And very un-Italian.
Example Italy trips

Italy – the land of renowned renaissance masterpieces, rich gelato, rolling vineyards, and azure waters. Arguably the most infatuating country in Europe, there is something for everyone, from the gastronomic delights in Modena to the dazzling labyrinths of Venice , the striking ruins of Pompeii to the designer storefronts in Milan . Both romantic and family focused, your luxury Italian vacation awaits.
MORE ABOUT LUXURY VACATIONS IN ITALY
Thanks to the dazzling ceiling frescos at the Vatican and the gaping hole in the Pantheon, Rome doesn’t limit its wonders to eye-level. Be it tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain or standing small underneath the impressive Colosseum, Rome is a fascinating place that has you peering upwards in wonder. Here you’ll explore tales of emperors, gladiators, wealth, and war with our family-friendly adventure.
UNCOVER THE ANCIENT STORIES OF ROME
Italy is diverse – from the snow-capped peaks of the Alps to the urban subwaypolis of Milan – there’s no shortage of landscapes to get lost in on your luxury escape. Experience some of the best wine in the world with our private Tuscany tours , or set up shop on the island of Capri, where turquoise waters lap onto sun-soaked beaches. The choice is yours.
GRAPES AND GROTTOS ON HIDDEN PEAKS
While Italy doesn’t scream Winter Wonderland, we think it should. Cozy and homey, it’s not just for the skiers – think wellness spas, hot tubs with unbeatable vistas, sauna sessions and Turkish baths for your luxury vacation this time. Nights can be filled with horse-drawn carriage rides to charming villages, cluttered with Christmas markets and illuminated castles. It may not be your average Italian vacation, but it will be one that delivers everlasting memories.
A WINTER ESCAPE INTO THE MESMERISING DOLOMITES
If Italy was an art gallery then Tuscany, both rural and urban, would be its masterpiece. Learn the little-known stories hidden in the Renaissance architecture of Florence on a private guided tour. Take a private hot air balloon ride over Val d’Orcia’s calm and colorful hills en route to wine tasting at the region’s best-in-class vineyards before joining a truffle hunt with some locals.
Rolling hills of Tuscany
Romance runs through the city that provided the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Around the corner from every busy photo op are quaint streets and piazzas peppered with alluring architecture and fine dining. Private table at the much-loved Bottega del Vino? Space is limited and we make no guarantees about how much room you’ll have for dessert after you’ve mopped up the exquisite Baccalà con Polenta and Risotto con Vino Amarone.
Romantic Verona
The home of Italian futurism and the motor car, Milan is an evolving city steeped in history. Why not experience its best contradictions? Indoors, you can get lost in an endless supply of 20th-century art, treat your taste buds with the aroma and soft taste of infused risotto alla Milanese, or stroll the Quadrilatero d’Oro for retail therapy via the world’s most exclusive brands, such as Salvatore Ferragamo and Bottega Veneta.
Fashionable Milan
We don’t limit you to bricks and mortar hotels. Luxury Blink camping lets you spend a night anywhere. Explore breathtaking Tuscan hilltops, escape to alpine serenity at Lake Lugano, or head into the untouched wilderness along the Amalfi Coast. Whether you’re planning a remote retreat or simply getting away from city life for a night of bliss, Blink allows you to experience a different side to Italy and feel true tranquility.
Blink luxury camping
Soak up the history of the Sistine Chapel and stroll around the Raphael Rooms at your leisure, enjoying the papal city in complete privacy. The iconic St. Peter’s Basilica presents the finest hour of Renaissance architecture and is also the ideal spot to appreciate panoramic views of the Vatican gardens.
Visit as part of ‘The Young Pope’ guided tour (inspired by the landmark 2016 series) and spend eight nights in the lap of luxury, with your very own private jet, prestige hotels, unique dining experiences, and more.
Enjoy exclusive access to the Vatican
Take to the air with a unique helicopter tour over Lake Como and enjoy the neoclassical architecture set against the hypnotic waters from above. Survey the striking green hills and take in the dramatic scenery with the wind running through your hair. When you’re ready to take a break, stop off for a bite to eat at the breathtaking Isola Bella island, privately catered for with fresh-caught pesce persico ready to satisfy your taste buds.
This is just one of our many exciting experiences on Lake Como.
Explore Lake Como from a private helicopter
With a private Jeep tour taking you through the winding slopes, explore the ever-changing lunar-esque environment of the explosive Mount Etna. From bubbling lava to the smoking cap, feel the heat of the active volcano like nothing else, with exclusive views of the wondrous Sicilian landscape, this is like nowhere else in Italy and our all-inclusive trip is one to remember.
Get close and personal with Europe’s highest volcano
The best of Italy
- Where to go
- The Best Hotels
Welcome to the ‘eternal city’ – sacked, burnt to the ground, and rising resplendent.
The Vatican City, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum and the modernist abandon of the EUR district. Our trips to Rome do justice to its curious and ancient history; with cucina povera and enotecas (rustic cooking and on-trend wine bars, in effect).
The Dolomites
The so-called pale mountains are the home of thrilling climbs and slow food.
Steep, rugged, beautiful, otherworldly. This is a very different Italy to Sicily and the Amalfi coast. Some come for its slow food, others for its ski resorts and local obsession with via ferrata (pre-roped, semi-climbing routes). For hikers, the remote villages and stunningly clear air are reason enough.
This is where the Italians go to relax.
Limestone clifftop towns and patient Adriatic waters. Puglia is the calm ‘breadbasket’ of Italy – providing much of the country’s olive oil and wheat. The food is roughly beautiful and amazingly fresh. Towns like Ostuni and Matera are a honeycomb of labyrinths and mazes. At Borgo Egnazia, you’ll encounter one of the world’s most immersive hotels.
Casa Angelina, Amalfi Coast
Borgo Pignano, Tuscany
Hotel de Russie, A Rocco Forte Hotel, Rome

What is the best time to travel to italy.
The best time of year to go to Italy depends on what you prefer from your vacation:
- Visit in the summer (between July and September) for the warmest weather.
- Visit in spring (April – June), or fall (late September – October) for milder weather and less crowds.
- Visit in winter (November – February) for Christmas markets and quiet cities.
How many days do I need to see Italy?
It can take a lifetime to explore all of Italy, but we recommend a minimum of 7 days to see the best of one of Italy’s regions. To visit multiple regions all over Italy, consider a 2 or 3 week tour. Our itineraries can be booked back-to-back, or we can create a private tour around the amount of time you have, and the places you wish to see.
What should I pack for Italy?
- We suggest clothes that can be worn in layers
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A cardigan or light jacket for the evenings
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- These are just a few helpful suggestions, but we are happy to provide a full recommended packing list in your booking confirmation.
I want to experience an authentic Italian tradition, can I plan my trip around this?
Absolutely, we love the different Italian traditions (read our blog on them here) and can arrange a trip to suit the location and dates of whichever tradition in Italy you want to experience!

Ultimate Italy
Step into the ancient world, as a Local Expert shows you the cobblestone alleyways of Pompeii, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel in VIP style, and the gravity-defying Tower of Pisa.
What is Italy known for?
Must-see landmarks
Traditional cuisine
World-class wines
To truly experience Italy, be sure to go to the incredible Sistine Chapel on a private after-hours visit, the glorious Vatican Museums, the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, the famous St. Peter’s Basilica, and the largest amphitheatre ever built – the Colosseum - while venturing in Rome. See for yourself how the unfortunate town of Pompeii came to be frozen in time following the almighty volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the first century. Venturing in Florence has to include admiring Michelangelo’s Statue of David, among other impressive art collections within the Accademia Gallery. In Venice, the majestic Doge’s Palace, Saint Mark’s Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, and a gondola ride on the romantic canals are an absolute must. On Luxury Gold’s ‘Ultimate Italy’ 13-day tour, experiencing all of these major landmarks is a given. You’ll get to do all this in true VIP style with exclusive, private access and no waiting in line as you visit the best that Rome, the Isle of Capri, Florence, Tuscany and Venice have to offer - perfetto!
Do you know your bucantini from your cannelloni? Italy does pasta like nowhere else; hundreds of different kinds exist and when you add to that the multitude of options for accompanying rich sauces, sampling the ultimate pasta dish becomes quite the adventure. Together with pizza, these noteworthy Italian staples are not the end of the story. In Venice, you might be surprised to learn that rice, rather than pasta, will typically be served alongside delicious fish dishes. The antipasto (the traditional first course before a main meal) takes many guises, usually in the form of cured or pickled meats, olives, a variety of vegetables, or an assortment of cheeses. And when it comes to desserts, Italian treats like gelato, tiramisu, biscotti, tartufo (an ice-cream based dessert, usually with a syrup or frozen fruit center) and zeppole (deep-fried dough balls) are a must for anyone with a sweet tooth.
If you love wine, you will be in your element in Italy, with over 70 DOCG wines (the highest classification, indicating the finest production and quality) to choose from. Wine is in itself an ‘event’ in Italy; you can visit vineyards, learn the secrets of the best grape-growing techniques, make an afternoon or evening of wine tasting, and of course savor the optimum varieties while dining. Chianti, Prosecco, Gavi di Gavi and Barolo are just some of many delights you can try during an Italian vacation.
While your first thoughts of Italian scenery are likely to be the picturesque canals of Venice, Italy boasts a range of surprisingly varied landscapes, with everything from the highest Alpine mountain - Monte Bianco (more commonly known as Mont Blanc), to the ancient canyons of the Po Valley. Olive groves and vineyards, the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, Italian Riviera towns, and 13 volcanoes all have their place.
Given the diverse landscapes in Italy, native Italian wildlife is equally varied and includes: marmots, Alpine ibexes, rabbits, wolves, lynxes, stoats, owls, woodpeckers, golden eagles, herons, deer, mountain hares, crested porcupines, badgers and chamois (goat-antelopes with short horns).

Italy's Great Cities
Absolutely loved my tour. Salvatore was a great guide, as were all the local guides. The accommodations were good, the sights were unbelievable, and the excursions were equally as awesome/worth the extra money. I'd recommend this tour to anyone!
Rome and Tuscan Highlights (9 Days)
Fabio was an excellent tour guide. He emailed us prior to arrival to let us know about a change of schedule which was much appreciated. He was very well versed on history and customs and knew the cities well, giving us a complete picture of past and present life in Italy. The tour guides in each city were also informative and engaging. Fabio's fun personality made the trip enjoyable for us and our 3 children, all in their 20s.
Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days)
I'd give 6 stars if I could ! It was a trip of a lifetime..we were so excited about the iconic sights we saw and had forgotten about other wonderful events and locations; as the tour around Capri; the inside Venice tour etc. The driving was excellent and the tour guide Elena was wonderful....we will cherish the memory forever !!
Country Roads of Italy (Classic, 16 Days)
Ok, I have to,be up front from the beginning. I didn't think a coach tour would be for me. I'm not too keen on lengthy bus travel and had grave concerns that I would be restless and sore after hours in the seat. Well, nothing could have been further from the truth. What a time we have had!!! Rome, Sorrento, Orvieto, Perugia, Radda in Chianti, Lucca, Parma and Venice. Phew, sounds exhausting right? Nope, it was exhilarating. To be fair, it's a busy pace and we did have quite a few "sparrow-fart" starts but once on the road Brad, our fabulous Tour Director, kept us entertained with his extraordinary knowledge of the history and nuances of the places we visited. He had so many interesting facts and figures in his head we decided that next quiz night any of us had, he was on our table. We had people of varying degrees of fitness and walkability and Brad was across things for everyone, at times suggesting alternative routes and at others ensuring that the complexity of the stroll was explained so informed decisions could be made. He did somewhat underestimate the length of stroll from time to time but we just smiled and started joking with him about whether it was a normal Block or a Brad Block. The hotels were all excellent quality although it appears that European bathrooms aren't required to adhere to the same standards as those we enjoy at home. In fact, I think European baths are preposterous in their economy of width. At least they have an emergency cord which can be used when suction gets the better of you
The Best of Italy
Sometimes it took quite a while to hear from anyone when I had a question.
Sicilian Secrets
The trip was well organized. The guide - Placido certainly knew his subjects and was very happy to answer questions. The accomodation was all very good as were the breakfasts. .The group was large and I didn't realise that when I booked. Also you did need to be fit ( I am) but some people found the wakking/steps very difficult
- Wine tasting
Italy's Treasures Art, Food & Wine of Italy (Stresa to Venice) (2024)
Italian Elegance (Classic, 12 Days)
Wonderful itinerary, we got to see all the very best of northern Italy! So much included, very informative we loved every minute of it.
Sicily in Depth (Small Groups, End Malta, 4 Days, 11 Days)
Italian Escapade (Classic, 13 Days)
Our trip to Italy was magical, full of long lasting memories and spectacular experiences. Such as the VIP access entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, I will never forget how we zipped pass the very long queue. Also, staying right on Venice Island, what can I say, we were right in the middle of all the action! Another special place is the beautiful Capri Island and having one of the very best Lemon Granitas. This trip was so well planned however, our Travel Director Daniele made the trip extra special and had the most wonderful sense of humor!

Rome’s Most Exclusive VIP Tours
During a visit to the Vatican which exhausts most tourists for its sensory overload, I feel energized — that’s all thanks to my guide, Angelo. Instead of getting overwhelmed, I’m peacefully communing in front of mosaics, paintings, mummies, and bronze statues. In the Pio Clementino Museum area, I swoon over Nero’s utterly immense, decadent bathtub, carved from purple stone and valued at some two billion dollars — utterly alone. Calmly led through the throngs by Angelo Amorico, founder of family-owned, Rome-based Access Italy , a Virtuoso member and one of the world’s most elite onsite luxury destination management companies, I find peace in a place that normally sends my heart aflutter. Partaking of the company’s uber VIP Vatican tour, we shoot through some of the holy complex’s nine miles of opulent nooks and corners. As if by magic, velvet ropes lift for Angelo, secret passageways get revealed, doors seem miraculously to be left unlocked — all for the pleasure of our intimate tour. My Vatican experience, an adventure raved about by Oprah, who uses Access Italy every chance she gets (she’s also cooked with them, toured the Appian Way with them and explored Sicily with them) gives me a private moment in the Sistine Chapel (unheard of) as well as allows me time in a room I am not supposed to name where only cardinals and other lofty leaders tread. In a word: I am gobsmacked.
More On Access Italy
Based in Rome and specializing in Rome (and all of Italy), this electrifyingly elegant coterie of guides (usually Angelo, his handsome sons, and or other fascinating family friends), lead travelers around Rome summoning the unexpected feeling that you’ve been welcomed into their elite clan. Cooking class with a famous chef occur at their house — a restored nunnery near the Piazza Navona — yacht outings to Ponza happen on a friend’s vessel, a priest just might leave a door ajar in a sacred place (you get the picture). Exclusive, breathtaking, and thoroughly VIP, these (pricy) tours stand out as some of the best I’ve experienced in the world.
Archeorunning
Back when I lived in Spain and went to Italy often, nobody in Rome ran. I remember being looked at askance by locals on the streets when I’d dash across the cobblestones in jogging shoes. But times have changed. Now, the world’s most captivating art historian (also a trainer for the Italian National Olympic Committee), Isabella Calidonna — you can call her Isa —will pick you up in the early morning at your hotel for a running tour of the Eternal City, meant to showcase its artistic highlights. Don’t want to wake up early? You must. That’s when you have Rome’s streets all to yourselves. Isa, ever passionate, will share her wealth of architectural knowledge, pointing out artful nooks and telling stories while leading you on a calorie-burning jaunt through Rome. Don’t like to run? Don’t stop reading. Isa also leads walking tours. Whether walking or jogging, your customized tour will accommodate any level — and take you to corners of Rome you’ve never scrutinized – even if you know the city well. Love movies? This licensed guide offers a range of tours including film tours that cover hotspots seen in flicks such as Angels and Demons and Roman Holiday . And at the tour’s end, there’s always coffee at Sant’ Eustachio (Rome’s best cappuccino) or, depending on the hour, wine at an al fresco bar.
Daverro Rome
Oversized Aperol Spritzes at a bevy of stellar locales beloved by locals is just one of the tours you can do with cool kid Lauren Caramico , an expat who hails from the United States but has deep roots in Rome. An inveterate foodie who knows all the skinny on culinary gossip and gastronomic tittle tattle, Lauren literally has a best friend in every buzzy bar and restaurant in Rome. On her food centric tours you’ll belly up to the bar or cut the line to hobnob with the owners of popular epicurean hotspots, join residents at their favorite pizza snugs and gobble up the Eternal City’s most storied gelato. Whatever you crave, Lauren can cook up a plan to satisfy your gastronomic whims. Loosely translated daverro means “for real.” With Lauren’s bespoke itineraries from cocktail jaunts to pizza noshes to truffle hunts, you chew and digest Italy with veracity.
Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese
A breath away from the Borghese Gardens, this villa hotel was recently re-imagined by architect Jean-Philippe Nuel to evoke French flair and Roman regality. Bountifully baroque rooms, a rooftop bar, and stellar service are mainstays of the property, but guided experiences reign as Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese’s tour de force. Subject matter ranges from photography to fashion. A boon for kiddos who sometimes get left out of the mix, the hotel proudly features multigenerational outings meant to spur a love of history and culture via riveting activities such as a Gladiator School, Stargazing like a Roman (led by an astronomer), or horseback riding on the Appian Way. For a dose of Roman zen, parents can participate in Yoga Around Rome, an outing that leads yoga practices in secret, historical sites such as at the Villa Torlonia or in the Giardino degli Aranci. For male Fashionistas who admire Roman style, the Men’s Fashion Experience tempts. Led by Italian fashion influencer, menswear consultant, and model Giorgio Giangiulio, the customized program promises to revamp your wardrobe like dolce far niente.
Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome
Perhaps no other hotel group has as passionate an impulse to immerse guests into the culture of its setting as Asia-based Anantara . With its prodigious expansion in Europe, the group takes the cultural offerings to a whole other realm. Just lounging in the common rooms of this Neoclassical marble fantasy near the Via Veneto would be enough (Hello classy Lobby Bar with your Murano glass chandelier), but the hotel’s team has partnered with some of Rome’s most fascinating — even whimsical — guides to provide unexpected and novel ways to sightsee the Eternal City. Consider the Vespa Tour, meant to borrow its mood from Roman Holiday . Join this one and you’ll ride through Rome in a double sidecar with a personal driver guide. You’ll whiz through the crowds to see sights such as Trevi Fountain and the Villa Borghese. In winter months, you can switch to a vintage Fiat 500 to stay warm. Alternatively, slowly roll through Rome in a golf cart on an Eat, Pray Love Tour. A wonderful way to slow travel through Rome’s various neighborhoods, this jaunt has less to do with the book/movie (read: none really) than it does eating cakes and swilling coffee at local pasticcerie, ruminating in obscure churches full of stories, and falling in love with a side of Rome you’ve never seen no matter how many times you have visited.

The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022
These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .
When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.
The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."
Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.
Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."
No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.
1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.
A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

I've lived in Italy for a decade. Here are the hidden-gem locations you've been missing
- As a child, I traveled around Italy on family vacations and now live in the northern Veneto region.
- Over the years, I've made a conscious effort to explore the less-crowded areas of the country.
- Some of my favorite hidden gems include places like Lake Iseo, Urbino, and Alba.
In recent years, over-tourism has forced Venice to introduce a daytripper fee to combat congestion on some of the city's busiest days, and Sardinia has introduced a reservation system for some of its most popular beaches.
That said, there's never been a better time to scratch off the obvious destinations from your Italy itinerary and take a chance on a place that isn't in the guidebooks.
I've been traveling the country since childhood, initially with my parents on family vacations , and then as a resident of the northern Veneto region as a journalist.
Over the past few years, I've made a conscious effort to go where the crowds don't. Here are my recommendations if you're looking to experience Italy's culture, nature, and food without the hassle of large crowds.
The Basilicata region is filled with unique treasures.
Occupying the arch of Italy's boot, Basilicata has never been a region of prosperity or fame. However, one place you may have seen on standard tourist itineraries is Matera.
Matera is filled with caves where inhabitants lived in poverty until the 1950s . Now, however, visitors can duck into rock-hewn churches and sleep in five-star cave hotels. You may have even spotted the city in the James Bond movie "No Time to Die."
The rest of the Basilicata region shouldn't be overlooked either. It's peppered with treasures from the village of Castelmezzano — which clings to jagged rock face — to the Maratea coastline with black beaches and summery villages.
Although it's known as the region that "doesn't exist," Molise has a lot to offer.
Ironically, Molise is best known as the region that " doesn't exist " — an phrase stemming from the fact that even Italians struggle to pinpoint it on a map or name more than one of its cities.
The region lies on Italy's eastern coastline just north of Puglia. Its capital, Campobasso, is crowned by the mountaintop Monforte Castle.
My favorite city in the region, however, is coastal Termoli, with pastel-painted houses inside ancient walls, a honey-hued cathedral, and a Belvedere Tower with pretty views of the harbor.
Don't miss out on the restaurants serving the famed brodetto alla termolese, a rich tomato and pepper-based seafood soup that originated in Termoli .
Skip crowded Lake Como and check out Lake Iseo instead.
With flashy Lake Como to one side and sun-drenched Lake Garda to the other, it's not surprising that Lake Iseo gets overlooked. However, the over 15-mile-long body of water has its fair share of elegant, flower-adorned villages and waterside promenades.
I recommend taking a ferry to car-free Monte Isola, which is known as the biggest lake island in Europe .
Once there, visitors can rent bikes and peddle around the nature-rich perimeter of the island, or hike up the path to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola on the island's mountain summit.
Urbino was a center for art and learning in the Renaissance Era.
Urbino is a walled city in the central Marche region of Italy. The city was a hotbed of learning and art during the Renaissance Era under the rule of Federico da Montefeltro.
A highlight of Urbino is the monumental 15th-century building called Palazzo Ducale, which is now known as the National Gallery of the Marche.
Travelers can visit the complex and wander the cavernous rooms displaying paintings by artists like Raphael, who was born in the city.
Alba is known for great food, wine, and shopping.
Alba is the elegant, upscale capital of Piedmont's Le Langhe , a hilly zone draped with vineyards and wineries.
Before slipping into a post-lunch food coma at one of the many restaurants, wander the pristine city, and window shop at its high-end stores.
Then, head to stylish bars that offer a range of stellar local wines, including potent reds like Barolo and Barbaresco.
Alba is also known for producing the white truffle , which is hunted by experts and their sharp-nosed dogs. Each year, Alba's International White Truffle Fair showcases and celebrates the prized tuber.
