“Travel shorts” can mean something different depending on who you ask. For me, I look to pack two different types of shorts in my bag when I travel in warm weather or summer months.

I want a pair of shorts that I can wear to look “presentable,” like if I’m going out to dinner or to an event at a friend’s wedding weekend. I also want a pair of shorts that will maximize comfort and function, but have plenty of flexibility as well. In reality, these two categories are often two different types of shorts.

In this roundup, I’ve tested and rounded up my favorite shorts for travel, and I’ll mix and match between those two categories. Keep that in mind when going through the list!

For reference, I am 5’9” tall, and about 165 pounds. More “athletic” styles usually fit and flatter me the best.

With all of that said, let’s jump right in to see the best travel shorts for men this year.

Public Rec Workday Short

The Public Rec Workday Shorts are an excellent choice for travel shorts, coming from the thoughtful folks at Public Rec . I’m so happy with the way they fit, with the color options and how comfy they are. The moment I put them on, I thought that these may be my #1 new favorite shorts for the year.

best lightweight travel shorts

The shorts have a good balance between being casual and presentable, with the option to walk around all day in them and feel comfortable.

In terms of materials, they are made from 100% polyester. This makes them super easy to wash again and again.

best lightweight travel shorts

They have belt loops, which are good if you need a belt, or if you want to dress them up with a belt. There’s a hidden side zipper pocket, which is useful for stashing away something small and valuable.

best lightweight travel shorts

They fit very true to size, like the website says. I wear a size 32 width, and I wouldn’t size up or down at all. In terms of the length, they don’t feel especially too short or long, so they’re flattering from the start.

I have nothing bad to say about the Workday Shorts and hope to wear them for years to come both when traveling and when home.

Stay minimal and comfortable with the Public Rec Workday Short, a versatile piece for any occasion.

Bluffworks Ascender Shorts

I started wearing the Bluffworks Ascender Shorts in 2019 and until recently, I barely wore any other pair of shorts. These shorts are a truly fantastic option for someone looking for a great pair of travel shorts. They have come on every summer and early fall trip of ours since I can remember.

best lightweight travel shorts

Bluffworks has been one of my go-to brands for travel since 2016. I have a lot of their products and everything I own is durable, high quality and built to last. Having a suit from Bluffworks taught me that you really can pack a suit for a trip and it won’t wrinkle.

The Ascender Shorts are 100% polyester, making them simple to wash. I always hang them dry rather than put them in the dryer. They look fantastic and crisp, wear after wear.

They have tons of pockets, much like most Bluffworks products for men (and women). There’s a back phone pocket, which I don’t use too often, but it’s good for a passport or anything that shape that you might need to keep out of your front or back pockets temporarily for security.

best lightweight travel shorts

They’re lightweight and packable. They feel like they have more structure on the outside. They’re made from Bluffworks’s signature Ascender fabric, so if they feel like they could also be pants, it’s because they are the “shorts version” of the best-selling Ascender Chino pants for men.

These shorts really are wrinkle-resistant, but not immune to wrinkles. My photos above might show an extreme case of wrinkles because I had them rolled up in a ball before I took the photos. Oops! I took photos on another day, which you can see here.

best lightweight travel shorts

Regarding the size on these: they fit true to size, which is also something I’ve lucked out with in wearing Bluffworks apparel for travel. After several years, they’ve held up great, aside from the color fading ever so slightly. They don’t show too many signs of heavy wear, even after wearing them through so many countries and cities, from NYC to Puerto Rico to Mexico.

Check out the shorts you'll want to live in all summer and during trips.

Western Rise Boundless Short

The Western Rise Boundless Shorts have been my favorite shorts to wear around the house and around my neighborhood on the weekends. They’re super cozy and surprisingly durable. I like taking them on a trip when I want a travel short that has an athletic feel. If you’re not familiar with Western Rise, check out this page where I talk all about the brand as well as our travel interview with Western Rise’s Co-Founder Kelly .

With the rest of the options on this list, I’d say that the Boundless Shorts are slightly less casual than some other options, and they’re more “athletic.” I think the photos on Western Rise’s website make the shorts seem more passable as regular shorts.

best lightweight travel shorts

They have a substantially thick waistband, which you don’t notice if your shirt is not tucked in. After a lot of wears, the band still has plenty of tension and it hasn’t worn out even a little bit.

best lightweight travel shorts

Some shorts that tend to favor the athletic side only come in small, medium, large and x-large. What’s unique about the Boundless Shorts is that you can get really granular with your sizing and pick the exact size that works for you from all the waist sizes, 28 to 40.

You can apparently take these shorts with you in the pool or ocean, which I have yet to do on a trip!

I can say that after these shorts come out of the washer, they don’t feel especially wet. Instead of putting them in the dryer, I always hang them dry. The large waistband will be the last to dry. Keep that in mind if you plan to take a quick dip and then go on with your day.

best lightweight travel shorts

The zippered pockets might come in handy if you take a hotel room key or something else waterproof with you in the water during your trip.

Experience limitless comfort with the Western Rise Boundless Short, designed for flexibility and durability.

Western Rise Evolution Short

The Evolution Shorts from Western Rise are a casual and laid-back answer to travel shorts that are ready for anything. Basically, they’re a modern pair of travel bottoms for warm weather that look decent whether you’re flying, taking a road trip with stops, hitting some nightlife at night in your destination or going to the beach for a day.

best lightweight travel shorts

Like the Boundless Shorts (above), they come in a range of numerical waist sizes, from 28 to 40. Western Rise designed these shorts to be the only shorts you’d need on a trip, if you have a variety of uses (everything except swimming and working out, basically). If you plan to go to the hotel gym or go for a run while on vacation, I suggest checking out one of the more athletic-style pairs of travel shorts I continue to suggest below.

best lightweight travel shorts

As for stretch, the Evolution Shorts have a four-way stretch, which is one of my favorite features of any travel shorts. Second, the pockets have a few good aspects to note: the interior pockets have mesh drainage, in case you get caught in some rain, and there’s a zippered wallet-style pocket for protecting against theft.

You could wear the Evolution Shorts with a polo, a wrinkle-free button-down shirt or a simple T-shirt to look great while on the go.

Transform your summer wardrobe with the Western Rise Evolution Short, offering a perfect balance between comfort and style.

DUER No Sweat Short

As you may have seen within our other gear reviews , I’m a huge fan of DUER products. The DUER Performance Denim jeans are one of my favorite pair of pants, and I tried the Fireside jeans for winter travel! I wear my Performance Denim almost every day, actually. DUER does make a pair of the Performance Denim shorts as well.

I’m here to talk about DUER’s No Sweat Shorts . There are a few things that I like about these shorts, which make the list as some of the best travel-worthy shorts for guys. First, superficially, the No Sweat Shorts come in a lot of colors, from the really nice “Wood Smoke” to the fresh “Stone Blue,” and I appreciate this because I’m not a huge fan of classic blue jean shorts.

Second, the signature gusset in the No Sweat Shorts is what originally turned me onto DUER pants. I like how the durability of my Performance Denim jeans are carried over to the shorts. I’ve gone on hikes, slept on night buses and took long walks through cities in my DUER jeans. Through those various adventures, the gusset has held up and has provided a super comfortable fit.

I tend to see exactly how helpful the gusset is when I bend down to pick up my phone or some luggage, and the two sides of the pants or shorts feel reinforced. With the same gusset in the No Sweat Shorts, they’ll last for years upon years. (Also, they come in a women’s version, which is great for a woman in your life! See it at Becca’s list of the best travel shorts for women .)

Grab a pair of these handy shorts for your next trip.

Free Fly Men’s Tradewind Shorts

The Free Fly Men’s Tradewind Shorts are awesome if you’re on a trip to a humid place, or if you’ll be on the water a lot (think boating, fishing or hanging at a lake). They’re also great for looking decent and put-together while playing golf or dining out during travel.

Thanks to a lightweight blend of cotton and polyester with 8% Spandex and DWR (which repels moisture), these shorts are soft and feel like chinos, with great UPF 50+ sun protection. If you’re intrigued by the Free Fly brand , I recommend checking out all the products for men , which are meant for empowering life outdoors.

Free Fly Men's Tradewind Short

These relaxed chino shorts are perfect for humid destinations or being on the water.

Swrve TRANSVERSE Trouser Shorts

I think what’s attractive about the TRANSVERSE shorts from Swrve is that they’re a decent-looking pair of shorts you’d wear day to day while traveling, but they are completely geared toward being active in a flash.

best lightweight travel shorts

With the reinforced gusset at the inseam, water-resistant four-way stretch fabric and a rear zippered pocket, you could be out mountain biking in these as soon as you were done with lunch. Swrve built these for men who value comfort, as the low waist in the front was built to avoid digging into your middle, while the higher waistband in the back should cover your rear when you bend down.

The TRANSVERSE shorts are built for adventure and have a modest 9” inseam. They come in sizes 28 to 38. Keep in mind that these shorts are not necessarily meant to be lightweight, so if you’re seeking something weightless, check out the other options above for your desired travel uses.

best lightweight travel shorts

I have a pair of these and you should know that the sizing is a little different than most shorts. Measure your existing favorite pair of shorts to see what the waist measures. That number is your size of Swrve. For example, even though my Public Rec Workday shorts are a 32, the waist measures 33. I ordered a 33 for the TRANSVERSE Trouser Shorts and they fit great.

I could have gone a little bigger because the pockets fit a little on the snug side. My waist size usually fluctuates about a half size during the spring and summer months because I am generally more active in those months.

Move with ease in the Swrve TRANSVERSE Trouser Shorts, designed for flexibility and durability.

Mission Workshop STAHL : LT

The Mission STAHL : LT shorts are made of really unique fabric. They’re pretty stiff, but stretchy and forgiving at the same time. I’d say these are a specialty pair of shorts, as the material is a military-spec textile.

best lightweight travel shorts

The 10” inseam is typically long for most men, so this is an aspect of them you have to be interested in and ready for. I’d say these shorts work best for men with long legs, or tall guys. In fact, they’re perfect for tall guys who find a traditional 7’’ inseam to be much too short.

There are a ton of pockets (well, six of them), which makes the Stahl LT shorts ideal as general utility shorts that will do you well during a trip.

best lightweight travel shorts

They’re water resistant because of the outer coating, which is a special coating on the fabric.

They’re lightweight and feel very high-quality, which is reflected in the price (note that they are made in New York, not abroad).

Experience the durability and functionality of the Mission Workshop STAHL : LT, designed to withstand any adventure.

Myles Everyday Short

If you’re looking for a pair of travel shorts that comes in 14 (yes, you read that right!) colors, check out the Myles Everyday Short . They’re a minimalist and cool pair of shorts with a drawstring waistband and four-way stretch you’ll definitely enjoy. I’d say I like the Dark Oak and Fog colors best.

A unique feature of ordering them to get your size is being able to pick the inseam length (6 in., 8 in., 10 in.) in addition to your waist size (sized in Small through XL). These might be good for petite guys, or guys who are tall and find that travel shorts tend to hit too high on the thigh.

These also have mesh front pockets to hold your stuff, and a water-repellent finish on top of the ultra-soft weave. They come at an affordable price, and the enthusiastic five-star reviews could probably speak for themselves.

Stay cool and comfortable with the Myles Everyday Short, designed for active men who value style and comfort.

Public Rec Flex Short

Public Rec is one of my favorite brands for travel apparel, and most of their products are winners in my mind. The Public Rec Flex Shorts are kind of an interesting item: they have an athletic look at first glance, but if you were to hide the waistband, you could dress them up a tad.

One helpful aspect of the ordering experience is that you get to choose a customizable waist size for these. Pair your waist size (28 to 44) with a desired inseam, with three choices from 5.5 inches to 9.5 inches, depending on your height and how you like your shorts to look.

You also get a choice of having them as “unlined” or “lined.” You don’t need to wear underwear with the lined version (shhh!). Lined shorts are good to double as a baiting suit, so that makes the Flex Shorts pretty versatile.

Overall, they’re great for lounging while on vacation, or maybe you can wear them at home so that you feel like you’re on vacation . They serve a dual purpose for travel, because they can be a bathing suit, workout shorts or shorts to hang around in and be comfy in.

Stay flexible and cool with the Public Rec Flex Short, a staple for any active wardrobe.

prAna Stretch Zion Short II

prAna is a cool company that makes men’s and women’s basics in a lot of great colors and styles. They also focus on sustainability. Their Stretch Zion Short II is a nice mainstay of their men’s shorts collection, and it’s made from the proprietary ReZion fabric, which is a recycled nylon blend stretch performance fabric. They have a unique waist adjustment buckle and strap that you can show off if you have your shirt tucked in.

The Stretch Zion Short II is one of the few shorts that offers all the way up to a 12” inseam. This means they could be great for tall guys, or just men who have long legs and find that other shorts sit too high on the thigh. If you prefer shorts that hit your knees, explore the different inseams lengths available on these shorts.

My personal preference would be an 8-inch inseam, and that can even be a little to long for me when I look for a flattering shorts fit.

These Zion shorts are called “Short II” because they’re the second “iteration” of the Zion Short I, based on customer feedback. For travel, the thoughtful design that optimizes performance, breathability, moisture-wicking technology and comfort will be helpful on any summer trip.

Experience nature with the prAna Stretch Zion Short II, designed for flexibility and durability.

prAna Brion Short II

Coming again from prAna, the Brion Short II is the second iteration of the Brion Shorts, based on previous customer feedback. It’s a casual type of short, and more traditional than the prAna Zion shorts, best worn with a T-shirt or button-down during a trip.

These shorts come in two inseam lengths for men: 9” and 11”. Like the Zion shorts, tall men and men who enjoy the look of shorts hitting the knee will benefit with these options. There’s a significant difference in these two lengths in terms of how they look.

The Brion Short II is made with the same fabric as the Stretch Zion (ReZion), meaning you get UPF 50+ material that is abrasion-resistant and moisture-wicking. These are all ideal qualities for a trip when you’re walking in the sun sightseeing, or sitting outside at a bar with a cocktail on a rooftop.

Embrace the outdoors with the prAna Brion Short II, designed for maximum flexibility.

Patagonia Baggies Shorts in 5”

Maybe you’re laughing at the name of these highly-recommended shorts from Patagonia. The versatility of these shorts is no joke, though: they’re good for all-weather running, they can double as a quick bathing suit when you left yours at home, they’re nice for the general “active travel” category like easy hiking and they’re excellent “all-around versatile shorts if you don’t need to dress up.”

The lightweight factor of these shorts is probably what sets them apart. Made from recycled 100% nylon, they give off a retro 80s feel, and with the 5” inseam, be ready to show off those legs you’ve worked for all year at the gym!

The Men’s Baggies Shorts come in lots of fun colors (15 of them!) and a variety of sizes from men’s XS to men’s XXL, which is kind of rare to see from retailers. The mesh liner lends itself to the design that lets you go in and out of water without needing boxers.

They also come in a 7” inseam option.

Experience the freedom of movement with Patagonia Baggies Shorts in 5”, perfect for beach days, hikes, or lounging at home.

REI Co-op Trailmade Amphib shorts

Just like the name, the REI Trailmade Amphib shorts will almost let you turn into a frog if you plan to spend a trip on wet hikes or in and out of the ocean on a day to day. These active shorts for travel are pretty affordable, not crossing the $50 threshold, and if you’re lucky, you can find several colors on sale for $10 less at any given time.

There’s a built-in adjustable waistband that not only looks cool, but helps if you want to tighten them before wading through water while trekking, or simply hopping in a hotel pool. The material is resistant to snags and tears, which is good for more adventurous hikes and bouldering.

The main benefit of the Amphib shorts is that they’re a solid choice for being in and out of water, and not having to change clothes. The blend of 89% nylon and 11% polyester lets them dry exceptionally quickly, meaning that they may even be dry before your flight home.

Stay active and comfortable in the REI Co-op Trailmade Amphib shorts, perfect for any outdoor activity.

Cotopaxi Veza Adventure Short

We’re big fans of Cotopaxi as a brand. They stand for quality and sustainability, and their products are really well-respected in the travel space.

The Veza Adventure shorts are great everyday shorts, and they’re pretty “attractive” as far as activewear for travel tends to go. In warmer months, you can wear these shorts from the moment you wake up, through going on a flight and arriving at your destination.

The Veza shorts feature a thick waistband, which I’ve found to be comfortable and long-lasting in similar styles of shorts that I own, like my shorts from Western Rise. There’s only one inseam option for the Veza shorts, and it’s 8 inches. This inseam length is not too short and not too long. It’s probably just right!

Because of the zipper pockets and blend of nylon and spandex, you’ll be happy with the functionality and overall comfort of these. They also come in some fresh colors, with “Raspberry” and “Spice” as colors that would look awesome in trip photos. A bonus feature is a gusset, making them reinforced like my DUER shorts.

Stay active with the Cotopaxi Veza Adventure Short, designed for your outdoor adventures.

Vuori Ripstop Short

Vuori is known for their athletic-first clothing lines and the company is a climate-neutral certified brand. You can expect high-quality clothing from Vuori, and have peace of mind that your items were made in a sustainable way.

The Ripstop shorts from Vuori caught my attention because they are made from 98% organic cotton and 2% elastane. From my experience, even a little amount of elastane goes a long way in making shorts and pants avoid feeling stiff. I’m also glad to see that Vuori is promoting a range of sizes for men, from XS to XXL, with these shorts.

These are really nice-looking casual shorts that will make you feel great through out the day. Cotton isn’t necessarily the best material for unlimited use, but if you have access to a washing machine during your trip, or the space to be packing several different outfit options, that shouldn’t be a problem.

I tend to under-pack and not bring enough options with me. And because of that, my travel outfits sometimes feel limited, or I have to wash items in the sink! I realize that not everyone is like that, and you may want a pair of high-quality comfy shorts to wear a few times — not five times during your trip.

When you’re not traveling, these shorts are going to be a perfect summer weekend option.

Stay active in the Vuori Ripstop Short, combining durable material with optimal mobility.

lululemon Commission Classic-Fit Short 7” Warpstreme

We like lululemon for their thoughtful range of products that make you feel good while working out, as well as wearing their products for loungewear. The men’s Commission Classic-Fit Shorts are a minimalist and simple choice for shorts made from the company’s signature “Warpstreme” fabric, which has four-way stretch, sweat-wicking, wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying capabilities.

They are sturdy shorts made in the chino style that will look good for a wide variety of occasions. I’d be very happy to dress these up with a button-down if going out to eat, or wearing them with a graphic tee while on the go.

As for beneficial travel features, they have a secure and hidden (!) zipper pocket where you can quickly stash valuables like a credit card, room key or collection of spare change. The back pockets have snap closures.

Keep it casual and stylish with the lululemon Commission Classic-Fit Short 7” Warpstreme, a summer staple.

How I made this list

I did a lot of research to determine some of the better brands out there that are making great travel shorts. When I first searched around, I found a lot of the same products circulating on other lists that I found online!

I wanted to wait until I had personal experience in really trying out several different pairs of shorts before forming an opinion on any.

Below, I have some criteria that went into making my list.

Your shorts should be comfortable, especially if you bring them when you travel and wear them multiple times.

In my criteria and in my testing, shorts still need to be comfortable, to endure long flights or sitting for long periods of time (like on a train or in the car).

While I do love my trusty Levi’s 511 Cutoff shorts, they are not comfortable for being in one place for a long time. My wife Becca and I often travel for extended periods of time, and I often make the mistake of bringing these shorts to wear on a plane, train or car ride. They don’t do too well because they’re kind of stiff and thick. Oopsies.

Comfort also means something different for men with varying body types. Sure, material can lend itself to being stretchy or soft; however, some shorts will fit better for certain people.

I have more of an athletic build. My waist size doesn’t always match up to some dimensions of leg sizes. For example, a pair of shorts might fit perfectly in the quads, but will barely fit around my waist, or vice versa.

So, finding shorts that fit me and are comfortable is subjective to my body type.

Functionality and features

For my list of the best travel shorts for men, I looked for shorts that had a combination of these features below. The perfect pair of shorts doesn’t necessarily have to have every box checked. But, if they enable the feature, they should do it well!

Zipper pockets

For travel shorts, zipper pockets are sort of a must, if you’re traveling to Europe, South/Central America or really any place where pickpockets are known to lurk (like Barcelona or Colombia ). Good zipper pockets make it a little harder for someone to snoop in your pockets and easily grab your wallet or phone. I note this because I’ve had friends who’ve gotten their phones stolen out of their back pockets in a snap, in both Spain and in some cities in Latin America.

Even for everyday life, zipper pockets are pretty useful in having peace of mind that something important won’t fall out of your pockets! Plus, you can impress your friends with them

Hidden pockets

Hidden pockets are a nice touch in travel shorts, for keeping your items safe. Similar to how zipper pockets protect your valuables, hidden pockets make it harder to figure out where your valuables are .

Some hidden pockets also double as zipper pockets.

The drawback of hidden pockets is that they can be in non-standard places for pockets. I have one in a pair of my shorts, and having my wallet in a hidden pockets feels a little clunky. I usually stash away something like a piece of paper or a single coin. Anything larger feels like a nuisance.

Belt loops vs drawstring

Some travel shorts try to impress you by having drawstrings. For athletic shorts, that makes sense. You wouldn’t wear a belt when you go running, for example. If your shorts are a little more on the “business beach casual” side (like maybe khaki-colored shorts with a button-up shirt), having a drawstring show up in your outfit might be a turn-off.

Some shorts offer this feature as a way to not need a belt.

This might be appealing to you, but I haven’t been sold on the feature, yet! Additionally, when you wash drawstrings, it’s really easy for them to wrap around the washing machine, or get stuck inside the waistband.

But, if you’re looking for a great belt to use for shorts that do have belt loops, I’ve been enjoying my Arcade belt a lot and I recommend it. You can check it out on Amazon or on Arcade directly.

Activity, like hiking, running or other things

When you’re looking for shorts, there’s not really a single pair that will cover you in all circumstances. The shorts that you want to have to look casual and feel comfortable probably aren’t the shorts that you might wear to the gym and to go swimming.

But, the shorts that you wear out to a nice and casual dinner might be the same shorts that you can take on a hike. It took me a few years to figure this out!

In another way, the shorts that you bring to the beach can also be used for running.

I try and group together my activities and try to plan which types of shorts make the most sense for those occasions.

The benefit of (most) travel shorts is that you can often wash them overnight, and they’ll dry by the time you need them in the morning. The reason is because most travel shorts are made from quick-drying material.

I once forgot running shorts, but luckily had a pair of nylon shorts that I used for a workout in Mexico City . I washed these shorts a few times and they were always dry the morning after. I did point a fan toward them for helping them to dry off, so I knew they would be really dry!

This isn’t a huge factor for me, but it’s nice that it’s a feature of clothing if you’re conscious about being protected from the sun. For travel shorts, if you’re outside all day with no shade, this holds a high amount of value to help keep you safe from the harmful rays of the sun.

UPF is the clothing equivalent to SPF, if you haven’t heard of it (and I only learned about it recently). It’s fairly standard for most of the shorts on the list to have a UPF rating of 50. It isn’t called out so much, so if it’s a deal-breaker, I’d encourage you to look at the product descriptions after clicking through to each product.

Materials are pretty important and are something to look out for when picking your final pair of shorts. When you look for shorts that are branded as travel shorts, you can almost expect that the material will be pretty stretchy, durable and will be made from something really fancy. Let’s take a look at what you can expect.

Quick-drying

A lot of materials are branded to be quick-drying. Pretty much anything except denim or think cotton is quick-drying, in my opinion.

What you want to look out for is any materials with double fabric or reinforced stitches. Those variants probably won’t dry as quickly, because they have more material to dry. It’s like when you stack T-shirts, the top one probably will dry first. The last part to dry will be where they are touching.

Quick-drying material might mean a slightly less durable pair of shorts. Keep that in mind when doing your search.

Breathability

Depending on the climate you’re going to be in, breathability may or may not be important to you. Sitting on a long flight and immediately going to India where it’s going to be 150 degrees F??? You might want the most breathable shorts possible. Or, skip the shorts all together!

If you’re spending time in moderate temperatures like the mid 70s on your trip, breathability might not be as important to you.

Similar to quick-drying, breathable shorts might sacrifice durability.

Stretchiness

Stretchiness used to be limited to spandex. There have been a lot of really cool products to hit the market that integrate spandex-like material into denim and make them extremely lightweight, comfortable and durable.

For me, if shorts are stiff and don’t have any flexibility, they don’t make good travel shorts. You’re one lunge or squat away from splitting your pants, and I’ve split quite a few.

Stain and water resistance

Dockers stain defenders was the first pair of pants I remember seeing that had this feature. The commercials implied that you could spill anything on them and they never stained.

Now, lots of other brands have this type of material and fabric technology.

Dockers was targeting people going to work or people who never wanted to wear khakis. The shorts that you’ll find on this list aren’t only for dressing business casual, though. Stain and water resistant shorts are great for getting stuck in the rain, wearing multiple times or not showing that they’re actually pretty dirty.

And it’s implied that because water and potential spills bead right off, they’re fairly quick to dry as well.

Smell resistance

Because “travel shorts” by definition usually means that you’ll wear them a few times, you don’t want them to smell bad after their first wear. Most travel shorts aren’t made from material that hold smells. It’s called “odor control” by most brands.

Something to look out for is that if your shorts do get wet, allow them to dry. Because, even the most advanced material will probably smell if it has been damp for a day or two.

I wouldn’t roll up your wet clothes in a ball. Try to lay them out in a sunny or warm area. That should help!

The Best Travel Shorts for Men in 2024

Travel and adventure require clothing items designed a little differently to ensure they remain comfortable and breathable.

Whether you’re on a trail, in a plane, discovering a new city, or exploring a park, travel takes you places…and your clothing should be able to keep up. But what makes good travel apparel? We want things that are comfy, breathable, hopefully a little water-resistant, and when it comes to shorts and pants, we want a good amount of pocket space too.

For shorts especially, this is important. If you’re wearing shorts for travel, it’s likely going to be warm out, so you want to feel comfortable and cool. If the trip isn’t too long, you’re going to want pockets (preferably that zip) so you can keep a few things with you and (hopefully) ditch the backpack or bag.

Here are some of my favorite travel shorts, tried and tested and guaranteed to be perfect for your next adventure – I also recently reviewed the best travel underwear for men if you’re interested in completing the outfit.

  • Best overall travel shorts: Vuori Banks Shorts
  • Best shorts for the trail: REI Co-Op Trailmade Shorts
  • Best for all kinds of adventure: Topo Designs Global Shorts
  • Best lightweight shorts: Chubbies Lakesides
  • Best athletic shorts: Lululemon License to Train Short

Best Overall Shorts: Vuori Banks Shorts

Tan Vuori shorts being worn by a guy

The rundown: California-based Vuori uses its home state as inspiration, giving almost all of their pieces a “ready for the beach or mountains” functionality, making them perfect for travelers who enjoy a bit of both worlds.

  • Quick drying
  • Made with recycled plastic bottles
  • zipped back pocket
  • Thinner material offers less protection if you’re in an environment that’s rocky or with a lot of brush

Vuori’s Banks Shorts are made with a breathable quick-drying material, so you can feel free to hop in the water. The stretchy design also makes them perfect for the hike home.

They also have a causal and athletic look to them, so they’re not just built for adventure, but are also great to wear out to a coffee shop or to walk your dog to the park, giving them tons of re-wear value. From the plane to the beach to breakfast the next morning, these shorts fit the bill for just about any occasion.

Best Shorts for the Trail: REI Trailmade Shorts

Tan REI shorts being worn by a guy

The rundown: REI is the mothership for outdoor lovers, so it’s no surprise that their brand is excellent for travelers, especially ones who are taking on lofty adventures.

  • Pockets, pockets, pockets! Five in total!
  • Water-repellant finish
  • Made with sustainable Bluesign materials
  • Thicker short is great for durability, but makes them a little more constricting
  • Only one of the pockets has a zipper

Falling in a grey area between lightweight and heavy-duty, REI’s Trailmade shorts are certainly lighter than your standard cotton or twill shorts, but the rugged nylon gives them a hefty dose of durability. That durability is great for anyone who wants to go hiking or exploring during their travels. The short’s water-repellent finish is also an excellent touch, especially for anyone who knows they’re visiting a rainy destination or will be spending long periods outdoors.

One thing to note is that the sturdy nylon shorts are a bit restrictive. I wore these during a recent trip to Costa Rica, and while on the trail in 90-degree heat I had moments where I definitely wished I had something a little lighter and stretchier. But for cooler temps when you want to feel snug in your shorts, these are perfect.

Best For All Kinds of Adventures: Topo Designs Global Shorts

black TOPO shorts being worn by a guy

The rundown: In the last decade, Topo has exploded into one of the most popular outdoor brands in the country, best known for their quirky designs and their splashes of bright colors.

  • 4-way stretch
  • Quick-dry material
  • casual look
  • Thickest short on the list, which, depending on the scenario, could be a pro or con

Topo’s Global Short is like an adventure-ready pair of classic shorts. Visually, it looks like a casual pair of shorts that you could easily wear out to lunch or the store. But thanks to its four-way stretch design and quick-drying material, these shorts are for more than just everyday wear.

The thickness of the material makes them super sturdy and the four-way stretch actually makes them more flexible than the lighter REI pair mentioned previously. If you’re the kind of person who packs ultra-light and only wants to bring one pair of shorts that can work for any and every occasion, this is it.

The shorts also have two zipped back pockets, so you can carry your wallet and keys without worrying that they might slip out or be pickpocketed.

Best Lightweight Short: Chubbies Lakesides

dark blue shorts from Chubbies being worn by a guy

The rundown: I love these shorts. I wear them on my daily walks along the river. I wear them to the gym. I wear them when I hang out with friends. I wear them everywhere. I basically live in them.

  • Super lightweight
  • Incredibly stretchy
  • Moisture-wicking
  • The least protective of any short on the list

I love Chubbies’ Lakesides shorts. I love them. I currently have another pair on the way right now. They are so unbelievably stretchy and comfortable, while still having a great casual look to them. You’d think you were wearing featherlight running shorts made of nothing. But the material holds up and is way more durable than you’d expect based on the feel. It has the look and feel of proper shorts, all while giving you maximum flexibility and comfort.

But, I’ll admit that they’re best when you don’t need much in your pockets since these shorts have the least storage space of any shorts on the list. If you’re going to be wearing a backpack anyways, or are traveling light and won’t be stuffing your pockets from every angle, these will be your new go-to shorts.

Best Athletic Shorts: Lululemon License to Train Short

Blue lululemon shorts being worn by a guy

The rundown: Let’s all just be real here – most people these days live in athleticwear. Hell, the term “athleisure” was literally created because we all love to live our lives in athletic clothing, which makes sense too since athleticwear tends to be comfy, stretchy, and breathable.

  • Durable, yet lightweight
  • zipped pickets (a rarity for athletic shorts)
  • Tapered fit makes it look more like a casual short
  • Quick drying and sweat-wicking
  • Because of their thicker material, they’re not as soft and flexible as other athletic shorts

Anyone who has ever been to Lululemon knows that some of their shorts are…let’s just say “flimsy”. Some feel like they’re made of tissue paper and might tear just from holding them. Luckily, they also make thicker, sturdier shorts, like the Licence to Train collection. With a heavier, abrasion-resistant fabric that’s both moisture-wicking and made from recycled materials, these shorts are perfect for Lulu fans who want something a little more tough.

As an athletic short, they’re way lighter than the more adventure-focused shorts on this list, but they still have a good amount of heft to them. I’ve worn these to the gym, on hikes, and on a plane. They’re super versatile, and thanks to the zipped pockets, I never have to worry about losing anything.

The only real downside to these is that, because of their heartier fabric, they are a little bit more restrictive than some other athletic shorts. But compared to their strengths, that’s nothing more than a slight annoyance.

Factors to Consider

Remember that your personal choices might differ from mine. While thicker shorts are generally better if you’re going to do some hardcore backcountry activities, you might not like the way they feel. On the flip side, not everyone is into really thin stretchy shorts either.

Hell, some people even like to wear pants throughout the summer. You know yourself better than anyone else, so while this is a great guide to get you started, trust your instincts. You know how you like to travel more than anyone else.

Why Trust Us

You can trust this guide because I own all of these shorts (and that’s actually me in the photos – please, no autographs!) I’ve worn these shorts while journeying through Costa Rica, hiking the Texas Hill Country, on rides at Disneyland, and while traveling in planes and towns across the country on work assignments.

These genuinely are my favorites because they’ve withstood travel activities of all kinds. From hiking the side of a volcano, to riding a roller coaster, sitting on an airplane, playing by the river, and more.

Table of Contents

Travel shorts are the epitome of “less is more.” It just doesn’t get better than a pair of travel shorts that fits you perfectly while performing the way you want.

If you’re anything like me, your bony knees just can’t wait for summer. But how do you know which shorts are good for travel, and which of your short pants ain’t up to snuff for your next adventure?

Traveling with the right pair of comfy, versatile, stylish travel shorts can be a game-changer. Here’s how to find the perfect pair of travel shorts, our favorite travel-friendly features, and some of the best travel shorts available right now. And, FYI, there may be jorts on this list. You’ve been warned.

best lightweight travel shorts

What to Look for in Travel Shorts

Evaluating what makes a great pair of “travel” shorts, is surprisingly simple. You just have to ask how the shorts pack (are they lightweight and wrinkle-resistant ) and how they perform (can they handle what you like to do?)

Here are the most important features to look for in a pair of travel shorts:

Lightweight

Featherweight shorts (less than 8 ounces) are perfect for chucking in your bag for impromptu adventures and are super easy to pack when it’s cold out .

Quick-Drying

The ability to hang dry your shorts in a few hours is huge. Prioritize quick-drying fabrics like nylon and poly blends are the best.

Breathability

You’re probably wearing shorts because it’s hot out, right? So make sure they can breathe with features like mesh pockets and gussets, especially if you’re headed somewhere muggy like Southeast Asia .

Zippered Pockets

Or velcro if you’re nasty.

You can’t call a pair of shorts “travel shorts” unless they have at least one pocket that zips closed. Too many things have fallen out of my pocket on busses and in cafes over the years to ignore the importance of either an interior zippered pocket (like the Bluffworks travel pants ) or at least one rear zippered pocket.

Bonus points for seam sealed zipper pockets to keep your phone or headphones safe in a downpour.

4-Way Stretch

Shorts = action, so get a pair of shorts that can stretch to handle hiking, biking, swimming, jumping, yoga, and even rock climbing. Stretch is a bigger deal than you think, and thanks to hybrid fabrics, performance travel shorts don’t have to look like they belong in a Crossfit gym.

Other (perhaps optional) features to look for:

Stain & Odor Resistance

While it’s not a deal breaker if shorts aren’t stain proof it is a nice if your shorts don’t look like crap after two weeks.

This one is a personal preference, but if you spend a lot of time in and out of the water, a drawstring can be great. Other people remove the drawstring as soon as possible. I like it, but I’m a surfer and a climber who’s weight can fluctuate a lot while on long trips.

You do you, but I think the drawstring is a nice value add, especially if it means you don’t need to wear a belt.

Built-In Waist Straps

Some travel shorts, particularly hiking shorts, feature a little toggle or cinch strap to snug your shorts up without a belt. I don’t love these, since they don’t look great when you’re just walking around town, but if you’re going to spend a lot of time on the trail, they can be great, especially if you carry a heavy phone and snacks in your pockets.

If that list of features seems like a lot, just answer these questions before packing shorts for your trip:

  • Do these shorts travel well? Do they wrinkle easily? Are they heavy or bulky?
  • Are they designed for the stuff I like to do? Can you swim in them? Are they stretchy enough to go climbing or hiking? Do they breathe? How quickly do they dry?

If you can answer “yes” to both of those questions, you’ve got yourself a great pair of travel shorts, friendo.

Best Travel Shorts: Men’s Picks

You don’t need to pack more than one—maybe two—pairs of shorts for your next trip. Obviously if you’re headed somewhere tropical you’ll be tempted to squeeze in a third pair, but honestly, two pairs of shorts is more than enough, especially if you get shorts that are designed for swimming, hiking, and happy hour in the city.

Here’s a short list (hey-O!) of my favorite men’s travel shorts for all kinds of activities and budgets.

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Travel Shorts: Public Rec All Day Everyday Shorts ($68)

I just like these shorts. They’re comfy, beautifully designed, and perfect for traveling no matter what you’re doing or where you’re going. The cut, fit, and moisture wicking, poly blend nylon fabric somehow manage to thread the needle for almost any situation—from the office (yeah) to a beach bbq. They just look good.

But, the performance is why they make such great travel pants. The two zippered front pockets keep your phone and wallet safe, and if you have more to carry the back pockets are roomy enough for snacks and headphones.

The only controversial feature (which happens to be my favorite part) is the elastic waist. Some people prefer belt loops to cinch up their travel shorts, but if you get the right fit , the comfy elastic waistband will fit like a gentle hug. And they have a lot of colors to choose from.

Snag a pair for your next summer trip and travel in comfort and style.

Honorable Mention: Outlier New Way Shorts ($125)

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Hybrid Travel Shorts: Western Rise Boundless Shorts ($85)

The Western Rise Boundless travel shorts can handle just about anything you throw at them. The doubleweave fabric is a tight enough weave to provide stain protection and a decent amount of water-resistance, yet it’s still lightweight and breathable for muggy days around town.

The reason I like the Boundless shorts so much isn’t just the build quality, but the cut and fit. These shorts just look good, and they happen to perform like a champ. The poly-blend contains 13% spandex (that’s a lot), so it has an ample amount of 4-way stretch. That’s huge for me since I like to bike and climb. And the zippered rear pocket is great for keeping everything snug and safe while I’m on the go.

My number one rule (besides always pack a carry on backpack !) is simple: Always pack a swimsuit . I’ve found that a good pair of hybrid shorts is more than enough for the occasional (or even frequent) dip in the hot tub or swim at the beach. The Boundless shorts are essentially my swimsuit and my shorts, which helps slim my packing list way down.

Honorable Mention: Howler Brothers Horizon Hybrid Shorts ($69)

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Budget Travel Shorts: Uniqlo Airism Dry Ex Shorts ($19)

Ok, cards on the table: these are not “travel” shorts in the strict definition of the term. But they are great for traveling—specifically hanging out in a hostel or hotel at the end of the day. Travel shorts don’t have to be fancy to be good.

Getting nice and comfy at the end of a long day is an underrated, yet extremely important, part of travel. Packing for downtime without taking up your whole bag is what separates the pros from the n00bs, and this pair of lightweight, extremely versatile shorts have been in my bag for years.

They’re lightweight for easy packing, breathable for hot nights, comfy enough to sleep in (which I do), and have pockets for keeping a few things with you if have to shuffle around a hostel common room. The new version even has a zippered right pocket (what!?) to keep your stuff safe on the go.

I can workout, go for a run, rock climb, or even swim in them in a pinch. They’re a great utility hitter, and I’m always happy to pack them for short or long haul trips .

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Hiking Shorts: Prana Stretch Zion Shorts ($52)

These OG travel shorts are great for the active trekker. While they are a little “trailish” for some city travelers, they’re just so danged good at what they do.

The fabric is rugged, durable, and water (sweat) wicking, while also allowing for lots of stretch thanks to a 3% spandex blend. I like the adjustable waistband strap (belts are meh when I’m hiking), and the vented gussets let these bad boys breathe on the trail. Yes, they have a cargo pocket, but it’s flat seam stitched so it’s blends in when not in use. And if you need to use it, you’ll be glad you have a solid stash pocket for your snacks and supplies. If you’re traveling in summer (or spring, or fall, really), and plan to go hiking or trekking, these are fantastic travel shorts.

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Travel Chino Shorts: Proof Nomad Shorts ($68)

If you don’t want to look like you just stepped off the trail, these travel shorts are for you. In fact, they’re a strong contender for my favorite travel shorts.

The Proof Nomad shorts are clean, sleek, and built to perform. Made from “Japanese Toray twill,” a comfy, stretch, technical performance fabric, these shorts can equally handle heat, sweat, rain, stains, and air-conditioned digital nomad coworking spaces .

They look great, feel better, and still pack travel-friendly features like a hidden zipper pocket to keep your wallet or passport safe and stashed away. I like a good trail short as much as the next guy, but if you want to look dapper at a beer garden patio or beach bonfire, this is the travel short for you.

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Lightweight Travel Shorts: H&M Short Swim Shorts ($12)

I picked up a pair of these tiny little bad boys a few years ago, and they’re still going strong. They’re featherweight, easy to pack, super quick drying, and stylish as hell (especially in Europe).

American guys usually opt for long board shorts that hit below the knee, but I’m telling you, shorter is better. These short shorts are easy to pack, and even easier to wear. And, bonus: the mesh lining inside means you can comfortably wear these shorts without underwear, which can stretch your packing list significantly . Seriously, that’s awesome if you’re going hiking or for a swim.

I will say that the mesh pockets aren’t great for wallets or phones, so if you’re exploring in these, you’ll want a daypack . However, I’ve worn them on hiking treks, around the city during summer, and even the occasional bike ride. If you’re looking for an ultralight pair of summer utility shorts, pick up a pair for less than $20. And if you want something a little longer, they have all length shorts available.

Honorable Mention: Oliver’s Apparel All Over Shorts ($68)

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Athletic Travel Shorts: Oliver’s All Over Shorts ($68)

If you’re one of those “active guys,” you need a pair of high performance travel shorts for the gym, your morning run, or just all the cool stuff you plan on doing all day long. Enter the aptly named “All Over” shorts from Olivers Apparel.

Designed for the guy on the go, these surprisingly stylish travel shorts are a lightweight yet durable travel choice for working up a sweat. They can swim, climb, run, or just lounge like a champ. Definitely a great choice for hotter climates too.

Honorable Mention: Manduka Yoga Shorts ($58-$74)

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Travel Shorts for Women

When it comes to options in the pants-shorts-skirt-skort-capri space, women have so many more choices than men. This is great, and it’s also a challenge. Finding the perfect pair of travel shorts, that goes from adventure to sundowner cocktails and are versatile enough to wear almost anywhere, feels like winning the summer wardrobe lottery. Try these options on for size:

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Travel Shorts: Columbia’s Saturday Trail Shorts ($45)

Great material, UPF protected, a preferable inseam length (no wedgies here), and multiple sizes are what make these a winner.

I love Colombia’s Saturday Trail short for women , which won’t put you back financially (they’re less than $45 a pair) and come in a variety of neutral colors—perfect for wearing over and over again.

This pair of travel shorts for women includes Columbia’s signature sun protection, Omni-Shade™, as well as its advanced repellency technology, Omni-Shield™ (ideal if you tend to spill on yourself at every meal, like me). Made with 96% nylon, these quick dry shorts are light, wrinkle resistant, and will be ready for action just as much as you are!

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Stretch Shorts: 4-Way Stretch Pocket Short from 90 Degree by Reflex ($19.99)

If four-way stretch didn’t pique your interest, maybe this will: these workout-friendly shorts have pockets with zippers (making your keys and ID way less likely to go missing!).

Though mostly polyester (88%), I still love the color variety and utility of these travel shorts for women .

The drawstring waist means you won’t lose your trusty bottoms even if/when you binge on too much carbonara and gelato (no judgment here!).

Keep in mind that these shorts are pretty teeny-tiny, so they might not make sense for everyday wear. Even so, they won’t take up too much space in your carry-on as exercise clothes or jammies.

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Budget Shorts: Frill Trim Tie Waist Striped Shorts from Romwe ($7.95)

Having a pair of sweet, sassy, patterned shorts tucked in your backpack for those special night outs isn’t such a bad idea—especially when you buy a pair for less than $10 from Romwe.

Not only are these cute shorts perfect for travel, they’ll be turning eyes in the corner pub or along the beach on the reg. Their wide legs and elastic waist means, yes, you should definitely spring for more spring rolls.

Just keep in mind that their polyester composition means you need to plan for more dry-time!

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Adjustable Length Shorts: Tranquility – Stretch Travel Short from Paskho ($58)

These adorable, pink-hued shorts sell themselves, but they’re even more than meets the eye. With multi-zip pockets and an adjustable inseam of 8.5 inches, they’re perfect for travelers headed to more conservative destinations on their adventure.

A relaxed fit means your legs look like they go on #fordays, and the hems can be rolled or not depending on your style. The contrasting black thread gives these shorts a super modern look—perfect for both a day of sunbathing or a night catching live music with friends.

What’s more, Paskho has business-wide commitment to sustainability efforts for the planet, so 1% of your purchase is dedicated to helping our mother!

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Versatile Shorts: Prana’s Olivia Shorts ($44)

If you’d rather ride a train across Tanzania for 44 hours than wear a pair of shorts with a < 5in inseam, then you’ll love these seven inchers from Prana.

Prana sets the bar for quality construction of their clothing, and their shorts aren’t any different. The Olivia boasts four pockets and their signature zion stretch fabric.

These shorts can be casual, dressy, or great for bouldering. At $44 a pair, you might be wise to stock up with more than one!

best lightweight travel shorts

Best Travel Skort: Patagonia’s Tech Fishing Skort ($59)

The only thing fishy about Patagonia’s Tech Fishing Skort is how you can be *so* comfortable while looking *so* stylish.

A skort can be the secret weapon of your travel fashion game, and Patagonia’s is truly made for the gal who loves to warm up for happy hour with a quick hike.

With a water repellent finish and four total pockets, it’s no wonder these skorts are finding their way into more and more carry on backpacks in 2019!

Travel shorts are the epitome of “less is more.” Take everything you like about your favorite travel pants and cut the legs off for even lighter gear that goes even further. It just doesn’t get better than a pair of travel shorts that fits you perfectly while performing the way you want.

  • You don’t need more than one (max 2) pairs of travel shorts
  • 4-way stretch is essential (get at least 3% spandex blends)
  • Make sure at least one pocket zips closed to keep your stuff safe on the go
  • Quick dry fabric is everything
  • Get a fit and style you’ll actually want to wear, even if they don’t look like “travel” shorts

7 great men’s travel shorts for any kind of travel.

There is no “perfect” pair of travel shorts – but – there is the possibility of finding a pair of men’s travel shorts that perform well in the activities you have planned, pack down small, and look good by your standards.  The first step in picking a good pair of travel shorts is ensuring they have the right materials and features that make traveling, and moving quickly, easier

Synthetic materials that are quick-drying, lightly water-resistant, odor-resistant, and stain resistant

Synthetic materials, such as blends between nylon and polyester with slight stretch added, created the perfect function for versatile frequently worn shorts.

The quick-drying nature allows you to go for a swim and dry while walking or wash the shorts in a sink a hang dry without the worry of waiting two days for dry shorts.

Stain and odor resistance let’s you get more wears in between washes without the look (or smell) of the shorts giving you away.  This way you can spend more time sightseeing and less time hunting for a laundromat.

Flow-through pockets, allowing water to pass through when swimming

Flow-through pockets, usually incorporated with mesh that lets water flow through, is a luxurious plus that makes unassuming shorts more suitable for swimming.

Zippered security pockets

No matter how vigilant you are while traveling, pickpockets can happen.  Having a zippered pocket makes this a little less likely.  Zippered pockets are also great for storing items while you head in for a swim

best lightweight travel shorts

Versatile Design, Cut, and Style

There are plenty of men’s travel shorts on the market, but, unlike women’s travel shorts most of the options lack any style or fashion sense.

best lightweight travel shorts

A big differentiator between most shorts, and the dictator of the conditions you can wear them in, are the style and cut.  Plenty of shorts are made of very technical nylon and polyester blends that perform well but aren’t at all suited for the rooftop bar.  In a warm-weather location, chinos style shorts will be suitable for virtually everywhere while running shorts just might get you turned away.

To step up your fashion game while traveling, aim for shorts with a classic yet fashionable fit.

If you plan on getting wet in your shorts, a durable drawstring is a plus.  After losing my shorts surfing one time, I spent half a day adding drawstrings to my shorts…and it was well worth it.

BEST TYPES OF MEN’S TRAVEL SHORTS

Chinos shorts.

Cut like a short pair of the classic “Chinos” khakis, the shorts version of chinos have a great look, and if constructed of technical materials (polyester, nylon, quick-drying, etc.) they’ll be the most versatile short you own, going from swimming to nightlife without missing a beat.

Hiking Shorts

For those spending more time in the great outdoors, hiking shorts will be extremely useful.  Generally built of more durable fabrics that are sweat-wicking and quick-drying, these shorts tend to have more secure pockets and a looser, more comfortable cut, although newer hiking shorts add slight stretch in to achieve more of a form fit.

If you’re a hiker or simply looking for a very functional pair of shorts and don’t care as much about style, pickup hiking shorts.

Athletic Shorts/Running Shorts

Generally streamlined with fewer pockets and built with stretchy and athletic materials, athletic shorts, and running shorts create a great activewear option at the sacrifice of pockets.  These shorts are usually created to be sweat-wicking and quick-drying, making them doubly suited for swimming and beachside activities.

With several new companies designing “gym shorts” with a more fashion-forward fit, it’s easy to find a pair of athletic shorts that are easy to wear all day and still look good.

If you’re getting a pair of these, pick up a slim fit waist pack to hold your extra items in the missing pockets.

Board Shorts

Made to get wet and dry quickly, but (with a bit of stretch) made to move with you and stay stylish at the same time.  Designed in shorties or longs, board shorts provide great water-focused function and good looks…and they’re absolutely essential if you plan on surfing.  If your vacation will revolve around the water, pickup some board shorts.

How to Pick A Good Pair of Travel Shorts

The perfect travel short depends heavily on your plans and your style.  To figure out the best travel shorts for you, ask yourself:

What activities will you be doing?

What’s most important for you to do in your shorts.

– Looking good? Aim for chinos shorts .

– Hiking and trekking? Aimi for hiking shorts .

– Running? Aim for athletic shorts or running .

– Swimming & getting wet? Aim for board shorts .

– Walking around town? Aim for running shorts, hiking shorts, or chinos with technical fabrics

Tip: In the end, pair at least one activewear short with one casual wear short

  • One pair of travel shorts (casual) to look good casually, such as chino style shorts, ideally made with “technical” fabrics
  • One pair of activewear travel shorts suitable for your most common activities, such as shorts for hiking, running, or swimming.  Hiking shorts, running shorts, and board shorts will be your best activewear option

Additional Tips for Buying a Good Pair of Travel Shorts:

Search amazon for travel clothing, consider going to a tailor to fix “almost” shorts.

  • Budget option: Pair one casual short with one technical short
  • Check used clothing forums for used pieces of great, high dollar gear.
  • If you can’t find the perfect pair of shorts due to pockets, carry a good backpack or pickup a slim waist bag to hold your valuables while on the move

Several big manufacturers as well as no name manufacturers have 100’s of great shorts between $15 and $35 that you’ll never see in the stores.   Thanks to Amazon’s generous return possibility you can order these with free shipping through Amazon Prime  and ship them back for free, with free shipping, if they don’t suit you.  I’ve done this plenty of gear and it makes the shopping experience much less stressful and

Click here to search Amazon for some great, inexpensive Travel Shorts

Sometimes a manufacturer has great fabrics, the perfect pockets setup, and a decent idea…but the fit is just off.  Don’t be afraid to buy a $15 pair of shorts and take them to a tailor for $10 to shorten the length, narrow the legs, or slim the waist.  In the end, you’ll have a better fitting short for only $25, which is 1/5 the price of the high dollar brands.

I’ve done this with hiking pants several times, and converted $15 wrinkle-free oxford dress shirts from Uniqlo to beach-worthy short sleeve button-downs for an extra $10.  Don’t be afraid to talk to a tailor about making your gear more fashion-forward , on the cheap

Check used clothing forums to get great, high dollar gear on the cheap.

From eBay to Reddit used gear site, plenty of people are passing off lightly used yet excellent pieces of gear at half the purchase price.  Check these options out before dismissing the price.

If you can’t find the perfect pair of shorts due to pockets, carry a good backpack or pickup a slim fit waist bag

I haven’t found the perfect short with a great pocket set up yet, so I either carry a backpack with me all the time or carry this slim fit waist bag that fits under my shirt.

Anytime I’m walking through a crowded metroplex with passport and credit cards, I feel 10x more comfortable with this thing slung across my chest or under my shirt.  For $10, it’s a great investment.

The Best Travel Shorts For Men: 8 of the Best Shorts for Men Who Travel

Let’s take a closer look at the top 8 contenders for men’s travel shorts:

1. Columbia Silver Ridge Travel Cargo Shorts

best lightweight travel shorts

PRODUCT FEATURES

Multiple secure pockets

The Columbia Men Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts feature many various sized pockets to hold different personal items.

Between the top pockets with a security flap on the bum and two zippered ones on the thighs, you’ll never be short of space to keep your phone, cash, or keys secure. There are also two regular pockets on the side.

Built-in belt

I like these shorts for a variety of reasons, but the built-in belt is one particular feature that’d prove useful on the road.

The waist band’s partially elasticated anyway, which adds to the comfort level, but having a belt means you can adjust them to your preferred size (and make sure they stay snug if you lose weight throughout your travels).

You can wear them loose when lounging around, and tighten up the belt when engaging in outdoor activities.

Versatile shorts & UPF 50 sun protection

The materials deserve a mention too.

Their heavy-duty nylon fabric would make these cargo shorts both durable and moisture-wicking (read: breathable); the varying neutral colours you can choose from mean they’re less likely to show up any dirt/stains you collect on the move.

Finally, these cargo shorts offer UPF 50+ sun protection, which means you can wear these shorts outside without worrying about those harmful UV rays affecting your thighs!

All told, these Columbia shorts are hard to fault.

Let’s face it, they aren’t going to win any award for style, but they’re definitely a high-quality, versatile pair of shorts made by a reputable brand in the industry.

The popularity speaks for itself. With over 1000 reviews, of which more than 700 hundred rated them 5-stars, you can definitely buy these shorts with confidence.

  • High-performing in wet weather
  • Extremely breathable and comfortable
  • Available in numerous neutral colours
  • UPF sun protection
  • Well made & durable
  • These shorts should dry pretty quickly, but they’re not intended for swimming

2. XKTTAC Men’s Quick Dry Shorts (Best Hiking Shorts Mens)

best lightweight travel shorts

Designed for outdoor wear

These XKTTAC shorts would be a perfect choice for any travellers who plan to spend lots of time outdoors. Their tactical design is perfectly suited to outdoor activities!

You’ll enjoy high-quality sun (UPF 50+) protection, abrasion resistance, and tear-resistance at the seams. The fabric is light, breathable, stretchy, quick-drying, water-resistant, and great at wicking away moisture as well.

With 4 big/deep pockets and 2 smaller front pockets (with zips), you’re well covered in the pocket department too.

Another cool feature is its ‘reflective strip’ design to help you show up better on early morning/ late night excursions.

Elasticated closure

Instead of closing tightly with buttons, these shorts have an elastic waistband with a clasp that fastens shut.

This allows the shorts to automatically adjust to your waist size, without you having to fumble with buttons and drawstrings.

The waistband’s adjustable too, with a strip of material that you can pull tighter and attach to a slip of Velcro.

High-quality and durable shorts

If you’re looking for a well-made, high-quality pair of shorts to take on your travels, then then you can’t go wrong with the XKTTACs.

With reinforced seams, reinforced buttoms, YKK zippers, and stretchable material, they’re sure to offer the perfect combination of comfort and durability.

The dark colours mean they’re well suited to hiding dirt and stains as well.

Once again, I’d say these shorts are designed to be practical as opposed to stylish. But they’re still fairly smart and could definitely be worn for more than just outdoor pursuits.

  • Size chart included so that you can find your perfect fit
  • 6 different zippered pockets offer a greater storage space
  • Breathable and comfortable
  • Great-quality
  • Perfect for outdoor usage
  • Not the most stylish set of shorts out there

3. Columbia Sportswear Backcast III Water Shorts

best lightweight travel shorts

Omni shade protection

I like the look of these Columbia shorts a lot. Why?

Because they seem like a useful combo of stylish, smart, and (relatively) practical.

They’re far more fashionable than many shorts here, but would still be useful in the outdoors. The nylon fabric’s certified UPF 50+, which means you don’t have to worry about UVA or UVB rays when you’re out and about on sunny days.

The tight weave construction makes sure that there’s full UV protection.

Made for swimming

These quality shorts are as comfortable and practical to wear in the sea as they are on land.

The ‘PFG swim-ready’ design would make swimming in them a dream. Their quick-drying capability means you could get out and dry off in a flash.

That’s good news if you’re out and about, fancy a dip somewhere, and don’t want to get changed afterwards. You’d wear these shorts into the water, keep them on when you get out, and continue to wear them thereafter!

The light-weight, breathable, and quick-wicking material means you’d stay cooler in warm weather too.

Flexible fitting options

Okay, so these Columbia shorts don’t come with all the practicality of other shorts on this list, but they would be versatile.

You could wear them on the beach, in the pool, as everyday shorts, and more), comfortable, perfect for casual use, and ideal for any water-based activities.

Furthermore, the elastic waistband would provide a snug fit and the hoops mean you could wear a belt with them if you want them any tighter.

Throw in the wide array of colours and you can pick a pair to suit your individual style/needs.

  • Available in a wide variety of colours
  • Stylish & versatile
  • Protection from the sun
  • Interior mesh provides breathable support
  • Zip closed-back security pocket keeps your phone/keys safe
  • No fancy features of outdoor/tactical shorts

4. Wrangler Authentics Cargo Shorts (Best Men’s Cargo Shorts)

best lightweight travel shorts

Easy to maintain

Looking for a sturdy, well-made, and versatile pair of shorts that’d be easy to maintain on the road?

These Wrangler Performance shorts would be a solid option. From dark colours that wouldn’t show up the stains to machine washable materials, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more ‘easy-going’ pair of shorts.

  • Comfort flex waistband

I like the flex waistband of these shorts too, which gives the waistband extra elasticity and helps it adjust to your size. The result?

You can look forward to a relaxed and snug fit. If it ever starts feeling a little loose, then the hoops mean you could wear a belt to tighten everything up.

With 94% nylon and 6% spandex, you can expect a sturdy and stretchy fabric that’d be both comfortable and well-suited to any adventurous activity.

Despite those attributes, though, these shorts do seem to lack the adjustability of others on this list. The lack of belt, drawstring, or other gizmo to tighten things up could be an issue if you lose weight or buy a pair that’s a little too large.

Style & storage

I reckon these shorts look great as well, which would make them well-suited to a range of activities on your travels.

From smarter evenings out to general use and into the great outdoors, they have all the attributes you need in any scenario.

And one part of that is the ‘storage-space’ they come with. Have more than just your phone, wallet and keys to carry safely? The 6 various pockets have your covered. These include 2 cargo zip pockets, 2 back pockets, and 2 ‘slash’ pockets for easy access storage.

  • Made to be an all-day comfort wear
  • Versatile design
  • Stylish & relaxed fit
  • Quick-drying material
  • The back pockets do not have a zipper closure

Here are four more of the best travel shorts for men…

5. JINSHI Outdoor Sports Shorts (Best Lightweight Travel Shorts)

best lightweight travel shorts

Stylish, sporty, & multipurpose

These Jinshi sports shorts are another versatile choice. Lightweight, elasticated, breathable, and quick-drying, they’d be a great fit for all occasions.

Whether you’re lounging around in the hostel, going for a run, hitting the beach, or exploring a new city, the Jinshi shorts should keep you feeling comfortable and looking stylish at all times.

Zip-closed security pockets

These shorts don’t boast the endless array of pockets and compartments of proper outdoor/hiking shorts.

But they do have three zippered pockets that a) reduce the risk of dropping/losing your items and b) keep you safe from pickpockets.

All told, those zippers are handy additions and make these shorts even better-suited to the road.

Comfortable & versatile

With 95% polyester and 5% spandex, the Jinshi shorts would be amazingly comfortable to wear on your travels.

On top of the quality overall design, the elasticated waistband would provide a snug fit from the outset; a drawstring means you could adjust the size to your specific needs.

Dark-coloured, quick-drying, and lightweight, they’d be convenient, stain-resistant additions to anybody’s backpack/suitcase!

  • Comfortable
  • Zippered pockets for security
  • Stylish and great for sports
  • Some customers complain that the sizing is inconsistent

-> Read more about the JINSHI shorts here!

6. LEE Dungarees Belted Wyoming Cargo Shorts (Most Comfortable Shorts for Men)

best lightweight travel shorts

Incredible comfort

These shorts are woven with 100% cotton, making them incredibly soft and comfortable for the wearer.

Their loose fit also helps in this regard- the lack of restriction meaning you’d have plenty of room to move around in!

That’s good news for anybody who wants to wear these shorts on a hike as well as for general day-to-day use. There’s also a belt included to keep the shorts cinched tight.

However, that 100% cotton could spell trouble in bad weather. These are heavy shorts compared to others on this list anyway. But they’re absorbent nature means they’ll really weigh you down when wet!

Likewise, you might have to be careful when washing then to ensure they don’t shrink.

Lots of pockets/storage space

These shorts definitely aren’t short on storage space.

They’ve been specially designed with a total of 9 pockets, spanning the front, back, and sides. This array of shapes and sizes mean you’ll have plenty of room for everything and anything you want to carry around on your person.

Even better, all of the pocket flaps are reinforced and secured with buttons and Velcro, keeping your belongings safer on the move.

Stylish choice

These cargo shorts might not be the most practical pair on this list, but they are some of the more fashionable ones! And that attribute only adds to the versatility on offer.

You could as easily wear them out on the town as you could for general day to day use and on the occasional hike too.

With a bunch of different colours to choose from, though, I would recommend opting for a darker material. That’ll stave off the stains and ensure they remain as good-looking throughout your trip.

  • Machine washable
  • Stylish design
  • Well-made and super popular online
  • Belt included
  • Practical array of buttoned pockets
  • Less than ideal for swimming or getting wet
  • 100% cotton means they could fade, wrinkle or shrink on the road

-> Read more about the Lee shorts here!

7. Unionbay Cordova Messenger Cargo Shorts

best lightweight travel shorts

Super comfortable & long inseam

Anybody hunting for a comfortable pair of cargo shorts for their travels should like the look of these Unionbay Cordova Messengers.

Measuring a full 15 inches, these shorts have one of the longest inseams on this list, dropping below the knee and guaranteeing ample room for movement. That should also provide a whole lot of comfort for the wearer.

The hems have drawstring ties too, which means you can pull these tight if you wish.

FYI, the length of these shorts would come in handy if you plan on visiting temples/holy sites on your travels.

Many of these places have a strict, conservative dress-code and ask that visitors cover their knees at all times as a sign of respect. That wouldn’t be an issue if you were wearing a pair of these Unionbays!

Comes with an adjustable belt

These shorts don’t come with an elasticated waistband and are fastened using a good old-fashioned zipper fly and button instead.

Now, this could be an issue if you lose or gain weight on the road (expect them to fall down or get a little tight, respectively), but they do come with a belt that’d help out with the former.

That lack of elasticity could also make them slightly less forgiving and mean a lesser degree of comfort around your waist if you’re wearing them for outdoor activities.

The 100% cotton could cause trouble in adverse weather as well.

Highly popular, many colours/styles, & multiple pockets

All told, though, these Unionbays are some of the best cargo shorts for men I could find

Aside from their comfortable nature and the adjustable belt that’s included, you’ll enjoy the multitude of useful pockets (all with flaps for added security) and the wide array of colours that you have to choose from (helping you find a pair to meet your aesthetic requirements).

With around 9,000 top-rated reviews, out there, you know you’re going to end up with a high-quality pair of shorts to wear on your travels.

  • Great choice of colours available
  • Adjustable tabs at hem/cuffs
  • Highly popular
  • Useful length for visiting sights of cultural significance overseas
  • Adjustable belt included
  • The waistband isn’t elasticated

-> Read more about the Unionbay shorts here!

8. PrAna Zion Lightweight Water-Repellent Shorts (My Pick: Best Travel Shorts Mens)

best lightweight travel shorts

  • Versatile shorts

The prAna Zion shorts are probably my pick for the best men’s travel shorts on this list. And that’s largely because they’re so versatile.

They have a stylish look to them, which means they’d be suitable for nights out and general day to day wear.

But they’re also made from durable materials, with a good degree of stretchiness that’d make them both comfortable to wear and ideal for outdoor activities too. In other words, they tick all the right boxes in terms of aesthetics and practicality.

You could buy a single pair of these Zion shorts and wear them for almost anything on your travels.

Perfect materials

Another practical advantage of the Zion shorts is the fabric they’re made from.

With 97% Nylon and 3% spandex, they have all the elasticity/stretch that you need on the move and a material that both wicks moisture away and is quick to dry. It also features a UPF of 50+ to protect you from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun.

The result?

These awesome shorts can be worn in all settings and any weather conditions- be it sunny and dry, or rainy and wet. I imagine that’s just one more reason why they’ve been rated 4.7/5 over hundreds of reviews.

Durable fabric, various colours, adjustable waistband

These shorts would be super durable too.

The heavy-duty materials mean they’d be resistant to tears and the reinforced seams and rivets mean they’d stand up to any adventurous activity you throw at them. I like that the waistband can be adjusted too.

The classic button closure fastens the shorts together, and the adjustable ‘belt’ on the right-hand side means you can pull them tighter if you need to. That all amounts to extra comfort and a better fit when you’re out and about.

To top it all off, you’ve got plenty of pockets and a host of different colours to choose from too.

  • Adjustable waistband
  • Super stylish
  • Practical, durable, and well-made
  • UV protection
  • Moisture-wicking and quick-drying
  • None that I can see!

Choosing the best shorts for travelling isn’t easy. The following considerations should help!

Don’t Forget to Check Out…

  • The best backpacks for back pain
  • The different types of backpacks

How to Choose the Best Shorts for Travelling

There’s no ‘shortage’ of options when it comes to buying the best shorts for travelling.

But that isn’t always a good thing! With so many high-quality shorts to choose from, picking one pair over the others can be a definite challenge.

Taking certain considerations into account should make your life a little easier though. After all, not all shorts are made equal and the best travel shorts have to tick certain boxes in order to be well-suited to life on the road.

I hope the coming section will prove useful in this regard. Keeping the following factors in mind should help you find and buy the best men’s travel shorts possible.

1. Versatility & Durability

First off, the best travel shorts tend to be versatile and durable.

In other words, you can wear them in all sorts of situations without having to worry about them ripping, wrinkling, or getting damaged in any other way. Let’s dive a bit deeper though…

Versatility’s a key attribute for most gear in your backpack. If one item can serve multiple purposes, then you don’t have to carry as much stuff around. That saves space and weight, making your life far easier on the road.

As far as shorts are concerned, versatility means being able to wear the same shorts on the beach, in the water, or out on the town. You’ll look as good and stay as comfortable regardless of what you’re doing.

Finding a well-made, high-quality, and durable pair of shorts means you’ll be able to wear them time and time again without worrying about them getting damaged or worn out.

You can get stuck into adventurous activities without having to replace your shorts every few weeks, saving money down the line and ensuring you still look somewhat presentable on the road!

2. Size & Weight

Size and weight have been and always will be two primary considerations for travellers and backpackers!

Smaller, lightweight gear is always preferable when you’ve got minimal space in your backpack/suitcase and have to lug everything around on your shoulders.

The same goes for your travel shorts. Now, the size you need will depend on your body type and the style you want. But I’d say that lightweight shorts (instead of bulky/heavy ones) are the best bet.

Aside from the practical packing benefits, they’re cooler to wear in warm weather and quicker to dry if they get wet.

Another point on sizing: try to buy travel shorts with a little give in them and that come with a built-in belt or drawstring. This allows you to adjust the size of the shorts as you go through the trip. It might seem unnecessary, but you never know if/when you’re going to lose weight or put some on while travelling!

bestbackpackingshorts-2057429

Comfort and practicality are two of the most important considerations when choosing the best shorts for travelling.

3. Stretch & Comfort

It goes without saying that the best backpacking shorts are comfortable to wear as well. The last thing you want is to be walking around in state of discomfort all day long!

Remember, the nature of travel (if you pack light) is that you won’t have many clothes to choose from. This might literally be the only pair of shorts you have with you, which means they sure as hell need to be comfy.

Weight (lighter shorts are comfier when you’re on the move a lot), material (lightweight, quick-drying, and soft to the touch are best), and fit (it’s never fun walking around in unforgiving shorts that don’t fit properly) all come into play here.

However, I think stretch is arguably the most important factor when it comes to comfort.

For one thing, stretchiness is great for versatility- you can move more easily and with less restriction. This lets you wear the shorts for all sorts of different activities and occasions, from running and climbing to doing yoga and lazing around on the beach/in the hostel.

4. Pockets & Zippers

Be sure to take the number and style of pockets on the shorts into account as well.

After all, you’re bound to carry around a host of personal items when you’re out and about on your adventure.

And, when you don’t want to lug a daypack around with you, having a range of good-quality zippered pockets will help you transport everything from your phone and keys to your cash and camera.

Now, I wouldn’t say these features are essential when buying travel shorts (you could always carry a bag with you instead).

But they’d definitely be convenient additions- especially when you’re carrying valuables in crowded places. The pockets would make everything more convenient than carrying things in your hand(s); the zippers would protect it from pesky pickpockets.

Once again, it’s all about versatility and practicality. Having more pockets on a pair of the best men’s cargo shorts is sure to make your life easier on your trip.

5. Quick-Drying and Stain Resistant

Last but not least, having a pair of men’s quick-dry shorts would be ideal- especially if you plan on travelling in wet weather or want to be able to swim in them.

The quick-drying material means you could go for a dip without getting changed and be dry again soon after. That’s always useful when you’re on the move.

Stain-resistance would be another practical attribute. Honestly, travel can be a dirty business- especially when you like doing adventurous activities and/or don’t have the luxury of carrying multiple pairs of shorts to change into when one set gets mucky.

Colour comes into the equation here too.

Those bright white shorts might be a great fashion statement, but they’re far from ideal when you’re on a long, muddy hike in the great outdoors. Those light colours will show dirt, stains, and marks much more than darker shades, and can be a lot harder to clean.

Darker materials tend to be the smarter choice.

Time to Buy the Best Mens Travel Shorts Possible

There you have it: the best men’s travel shorts on the market.

I know from personal experience how hard it can be to find the best travel shorts for men!

That’s why I decided to put this buying guide together. With any luck, it will have highlighted a selection of the best travel shorts out there and helped you settle on the perfect pair for your upcoming trip.

13 Best Travel Shorts with Zipper Pockets

Many people plan their trips during the warmer weather, or to places that are generally quite sunny. When traveling to such places, one essential item of clothing is a good pair of shorts. While shorts that are light, stylish, and quick-drying are the preferred choice, travel shorts with zipper pockets are an added bonus. What’s even better are travel shorts with hidden pockets, especially if you’re traveling in areas known for pickpockets.

Travel is all about convenience and comfort and the last thing you want to be bogged down with is your attire. Just like the best leggings for travel or even the best travel pajamas , travel shorts should offer an unparalleled level of comfort.

How To Choose The Best Travel Shorts With Zipper Pockets

Travel often involves multiple activities such as hiking, swimming or just walking around town. So the shorts you choose will largely depend on the activity you’re going to be engaged in. That being said, whatever activity you’re engaged in, you want to be sure that your travel shorts are durable and comfortable enough.

Certain features such as fabric, fit, and functionality need to be considered when choosing a good pair of travel shorts with zipper pockets.

If you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, fabrics that dry quickly should be your go-to option. Synthetic materials are the preferred choice because they’re usually moisture-wicking, water-resistant, and breathable. Even if you’re caught in an unprecedented downpour, with these fabrics you won’t have to suffer in drenched shorts for long. The advantage of synthetic fabric is that they also have UPF 50+ sun protection.

When choosing travel shorts with hidden pockets, another feature to look out for in the material is the resistance to stains and wrinkles. No one wants to be wasting time ironing even if you do have the best travel steamers for clothes . Fabric that is odor resistant is also a bonus when traveling.

Functionality and Style

Of course, you want to look your best even when you’re traveling so the style of the shorts does matter. While women have the option of stylish-looking shorts, with men the styles are quite limited. Shorts that have a classic yet fashionable fit are great for travel as you can also wear them at a rooftop bar or a beachside cafe.

Travel shorts with zipper pockets offer secure storage space but you’ll also want shorts that are multifunctional.

Secure Pockets with Depth

While hidden pockets are an excellent option for keeping pickpockets at bay, you also need to make sure that they have enough depth. Shallow pockets will not hold much. It’s also important to have at least one zippered pocket when traveling. That way you’ll be able to keep your essentials secure. A bonus would be to have a seam-sealed zipper pocket for protection from the rain.

Are Athletic Running Shorts Good For Travel?

Athletic shorts are made from moisture-wicking fabric that is quick-drying. While these may not be a great option for walking around in, they’re quite good for swimming and beachside activities. However, with clothing brands upgrading their attire these days, you can probably find a fashionable pair of running shorts that can be worn all day.

Why Is It So Important For Travel Shorts To Be Stretchy?

Whether you’re sitting for hours behind the steering wheel or hiking through rough terrain, fabric that allows big movements is the preferred choice. Stretch fabric allows you to engage in various activities, providing you with more versatility.

The 5 Best Lightweight Shorts for Men 2023 | Linen, Hemp, Stretch

' src=

If you’re wearing shorts, make it count: make them high quality, and if you wait until the last possible second to stop wearing jeans and start wearing shorts you probably want the lightest weight shorts you can get. Many of the shorts I’ve collected below are linen, or hemp, or really lightweight cotton — but there’s one with a stretchy performance fabric that’s surprisingly breathable as well.

Alex Crane Linen Bo Shorts

Table of Contents

1. Alex Crane – Bo Short ($75)

  • 7-inch inseam
  • Soft and breathable
  • A dozen colors to choose from

I’m dropping this in first because these are the only shorts I have that are 100% linen . Alex Crane is an entire brand dedicated to lightweight fabrics, or “breezy clothes” as they say on their site because,

breeze is a spirit, it’s a reminder to jump in the ocean and watch the clouds and hum a tune.

Who could say no to that? Well, you might, at $75 for a pair but they’re not the most expensive shorts out there and the product has a great story. The linen comes from flax, which is grown in a farming co-op in Normandy, France, and the fibers are separated by a process called ‘dew retting’ meaning they basically let the sun and rain do it throughout the month of August.

The fibers are spun into yarn and woven into fabric in a facility in India that uses 80% carbon neutral electricity, and the facility is certified with a bunch of working conditions organizations like SA 800.

Alex Crane Linen Shorts and Sabah Slippers

Although linen is sometimes a bit rough and itchy, Alex Crane treats it with biodegradable enzymes so it’s soft from the get go — you don’t have to wear and wash them a bunch of times first. Mine are the “Pine” color that you often see in their advertising, but the shorts come in a dozen other colors.

So it’s a cool company, cool fabric, and a simply designed, logo-free product, just note that you need to size up. My waist is 32 inches and I usually get a medium, but these are a large.

Taylor Stitch Apres Short

2. Taylor Stitch’s Apres Short ($88)

  • 8 inch inseam
  • 6 ounce hemp
  • Breathable and antibacterial
  • Loose, comfy fit

These ones are made of 6oz hemp instead of  linen, which is very durable: according to most sources it’s 8 times stronger than linen. It’s one of the most eco friendly fibers as well: an average yield gets you almost twice as much material as linen, and although it does need more water and nutrients than linen to grow, it still requires about half as much water as cotton and it grows much faster and makes more fiber.

Taylor Stitch Apres Short Standing

Anyway, hemp is great. It’s very antibacterial, so it won’t stink so much during summer adventures, and it’s very breathable because it doesn’t hold a lot of moisture.

It was probably dumb to include it on this list because the product is almost sold out, but it’s super comfy: it’s a pretty loose, easy going fit (even on me and my powerlifter’s butt), it’s got button-through back pockets to keep your stuff secure, and it’s worth getting if they’re still out. If not, sorry to tell you how great these are.

Rythm Classic Jam Black Shorts on a table

3. Rhythm. Classic linen Jam ($50)

  • 55% linen 45% Cotton blend
  • Made in China

Rhythm. with a period is an Australian brand that has managed to expand a bit into the American market with their classic, beachy vibes. This is their Classic linen jam, inspired by what they call a timeless design, and they’re really nice: super lightweight and breathable from the linen but fairly substantial from the cotton.

Rhythm Classic Jam Shorts Walking

It’s made with an adjustable cord which I prefer for shorts (my weight yo yos a lot) and besides the logo stitched to the bottom of the left leg opening, they’re very simple to look at.

Weirdly they advertise the outseam, which is 17 inches, and not the inseam which is what people actually want to know, but I clocked mine at about 7 inches. They cost just 50 bucks which is pretty reasonable for something of this quality, but it makes sense given they’re made in China.

Flint and Tinder 365 Shorts

4. Flint and Tinder’s 365 short ($64)

  • Available in 7- and 9-inch inseams and 7 colors.
  • Chino cut, more dressy than the other more beachy shorts
  • 98% cotton and 2% spandex

Next up, with hundreds of reviews, we have Flint and Tinder’s flagship short, which is available in 7- and 9-inch inseams and 7 colors. Unlike the other options on this list, it’s cut like a chino, so you’ve got a fly and belt loops for a more dressed up feel.

Flint and Tinder 365 Shorts with a blue top

It’s worth noting this isn’t made with linen or hemp or anything, it’s 8 ounces per square yard of 98% cotton and 2% spandex. That 2% is why I’m including it, because that stretch is what sells it for a lot of guys: it makes it a short that looks pretty smart when you’re out, but also comfy for lying around the house or a pool party.

These are made in Indonesia, in a sustainable factory where they recycle and repurpose 98% of the water used, which is a nice touch. They cost 64 bucks and you get a 20-dollar discount if you get two pairs.

Wellen Blue Shorts

5. Wellen Easy Chino Short ($68)

  • 8-inch inseam
  • 68% cotton, 32% linen
  • Good for athletic guys
  • Might have to size up if you have a big butt or thighs

The last one to mention is the Wellen Easy Chino Short. This is the one I’ve been wearing the most this summer, largely because it’s my only blue pair of shorts, but I really dig the 68% cotton and 32% linen material, which is breathable but robust.

Wellen Blue Chino Shorts

Wellen is one of these companies that emphasizes sustainability: the cotton is organic, which matters because organic cotton produces half as much CO2 as regular cotton, uses less water, and there are no pesticides.

The only thing I’d change is to make the drawstring the same color as the shorts (like the Apres short does) because they stand out if you happen to have bought a shirt that’s a bit too short for you. (Which always happens to me because I have a long torso.)

They’re also fairly tight; I got a medium and my butt looks really big in them, so if your butt or thighs are large for your waistline, you might want to size up. But the general consensus is they have more room in the thighs and butt than a lot of shorts out there, so they might be a good pick for “athletic guys” or bigger thighed guys.

Best Lightweight Shorts for Summer

Wrapping It Up

I think there’s something for just about every guy here. If you want a comfy, beach ready pair of shorts the Wellens, the Bo shorts, Apres, Jams and Easy Chinos are perfect. If your priority is eco-frendliness, the Alex Crane Bo shorts or the organic Wellen ones are good picks. After something more traditional that you can wear to a casual night out? The Flint and Tinder 365, have the stretch and dressiness you need. Even if you don’t normally wear shorts, give a few of these a go.

best boots for men

Men don’t have a lot of rites of passage. We finish school, we get jobs, maybe we wear a suit, maybe we don’t. We’re told that adulthood starts at 18 or 21, but the older we get the more we realize that isn’t true. Maturity comes slower than that and while this may sound silly, I think one of the marks of manhood is the first time you pay top dollar for a pair of quality, durable, head-turning boots.  Read more

Shoppers Are Ditching Their Stiff Denim Shorts for This Breathable $10 Cotton Pair That's Perfect for Beach Trips

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

I’ll be honest, I dread when it becomes time to remove my stiff denim shorts from the depths of my closet each year and pack them for an upcoming trip. In my opinion, there’s nothing less comfortable than slipping into tight denim on the way to the beach or even on a day out sightseeing, so I’ve found myself searching for alternatives that still maintain a sense of style without making me chafed and irritated.

After months of keeping my eyes peeled, I seem to have stumbled upon a pair of shorts that are universally loved by Amazon shoppers — and the best part is, they’re currently on sale. If you’re anything like me and are tired of pretending to prefer denim shorts to comfort, the Kissmoda Women’s Summer Shorts are currently on sale starting at just $10, so you can revamp your summer wardrobe without shelling out money that could be spent enjoying your vacation.

To buy: amazon.com , $10 (originally $13)

These loose-fitting, breathable shorts stray far away from the discomfort of a traditional structured short and are made with a lightweight cotton material that allows you to move freely throughout your day without being restricted by your clothing. A drawstring closure and elastic waistband ensure you’ll be comfortable whether you’re sitting or standing, making them a staple for tourist activities and even hours spent sitting on a lengthy flight.

A 3-inch inseam strikes the perfect balance of length, and these shorts even feature two deep side pockets and two back pockets which are excellent for holding your phone, keys, and other smaller essentials while you’re on the go. Not to mention they come in 40 effortless color and pattern variations with sizes ranging from S to 3XL so you won’t have to struggle finding shorts that actually suit your personal taste.

To buy: amazon.com , $18 (originally $28)

More than 3,700 shoppers have given these comfortable cotton shorts a five-star rating at Amazon, and from busy travel days to relaxing beach excursions, people can’t get enough of this summer staple for all of the adventures on their to-do list. One customer dubbed them “comfortable, classic shorts,” explaining that the pockets provide a “convenient and secure spot for my keys and phone,” while also noting that they are “perfect for the beach and to throw on over my swimsuit before going for a bite to eat.” In fact, another shopper even shared that they like the material of these shorts “more than denim” since it’s “cooler and lighter” to wear during the summertime.

Naturally, you want to invest in clothing that you can continue to wear even outside of your travels, and one customer confirms that while they initially “bought these shorts for a vacation,” they now “wear them all the time.” They raved that the cotton material is “incredibly comfortable and stretchy,” adding that they are “super cute and match any outfit.” Meanwhile, another shopper even went as far as to call them their “favorite summer shorts,” noting that this was the second year they purchased them after going down in size, explaining that they “always get at least four [pairs]” so they can “wear them all week.”

To buy: amazon.com , $24 (originally $28)

It’s never easy to find a pair of shorts that are actually stylish, flattering, and above all, comfortable, but the Kissmoda Women’s Summer Shorts have managed to check all the boxes as we head into the season of warm-weather travel. Right now, the shopper-loved shorts are on sale for as little as $10 in select colors, so don’t miss out on grabbing a pair (or two!) before your next vacation so you can look as cool as you are comfortable.

At the time of publishing, the price started at $10.

Should I wear shorts?

Shorts are a controversial topic on Travel Fashion Girl. Not all female travelers feel comfortable wearing them and some even say you shouldn’t use them after a certain age (30, ouch).

Hearing so many opinions about one of my absolute favorite pieces of clothing caused a bit of internal conflict in my life. I chase the sun. I live by the sea. I don’t like wearing skirts. And I love wearing shorts.

BUT was I no longer allowed to wear them in my early thirties? Heartbreak.

summer-shorts-for-women

During my time living in Playa del Carmen , any confusion I’ve had about women wearing shorts has subsided. I’ve seen women of all ages, shapes, and sizes wearing stylish shorts that were not only vacation appropriate – they were extremely flattering, too. If they could wear them, why can’t I?

An Italian fashion stylist in Rome explained to me her theory about shorts: if you have the legs, why not? It’s as simple as that.

With newfound confidence, I’m eager to wear my favorite piece of clothing once again and I’ve recently come across several pairs of stylish shorts for ladies that I thought were absolutely perfect for travel!

is there a link to the cute shorts you are wearing (the black/purpish pink?) so cute!

Alex

Hi Theresa, the Violet Diamond Shorts were from Soul Escape but I don’t think the company still exists any more. I brought them a few years ago. 🙂

Kathy

I’ve been traveling to Italy now annually for 25 years. Neither Italian women nor Italian men wear shorts, except at the seaside, and even then not so much. Unless you want to show you are a tourist, particularly an American tourist, better to leave your shorts at home, particularly short shorts.

Hi Kathy, thank you for taking the time to share your packing advice for Italy with us! Happy travels! ?

where is soul escape?

alex

I think they went out of business 🙁

Shayna Abraham

I have had shorts on my mind and am a bit skiddish about finding some that fit well with my body shape. I love seeing all these options. Thank you.

Travel Fashion Girl

Glad you like the article Shayna 🙂 If you love shorts then give some a go!

Kristin 2z

Love them all…

Terri A

Those violet diamond shorts are definitely cute. I definitely wouldn’t mind wearing those! They look super comfy!!

🙂 I totally agree!

Jacqueline Rudy

If shorts not good after 30 then I’ve had a 20yr fashion faux pas. Yikes.

I totally love them after 30 Jacqueline! Keep wearing them 🙂

Gabby

I love shorts all summer, I’m not interested in spending my interested trying not to flash people in skirts, but one problem I’ve noticed with shorts shopping lately is that a lot of the more relaxed, breezy style shorts lately look really weird when I put them on. I tend to get a weird FUPA-looking, diaper-ish baggy front! It is the weirdest thing and I’ve noticed it across a number of brands. I have no idea what causes it! I’m really interested in hearing about the chambray shorts you got and if you see the same strange effect.

I totally understand what you mean, and have had this problem in the past! These shorts don’t have that affect on me, which is why I love them!

kiki

Hahahaha, what?? No shorts after 30?? Hahahaha….. who said that, a 20 year old?

I agree Kiki! If you have the legs then go for it 🙂 I absolutely love this style and brand!

Best Hiking Shorts of 2024

From thick and durable designs for backcountry adventures to quick-drying options for days on the water, below are our favorite hiking shorts of the year.

Hiking shorts (prAna Stretch Zion closeup in Utah)

Switchback Travel

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases. Read more about us .

Most hikers know the value of a quality pair of hiking pants, but for midsummer conditions or particularly active days on the trail, we turn to hiking shorts. In addition to being more breathable and quicker to dry, most of our favorite modern hiking shorts are impressively durable, boast functional storage, and have handy adjustments at the waist for dialing in fit. From technical and performance-ready softshell designs to everyday-friendly options that wear well both around town and outdoors, below are our favorite hiking shorts of 2024. For more information, see our comparison table and buying advice below the picks. Of note: Most of the testing and information below is focused on men’s designs, but we've also written a dedicated round-up on the best women’s hiking shorts .

Editor’s note: We updated our hiking shorts guide on March 20, 2024, to add the latest Patagonia Quandary Shorts, which were recently revamped with improved comfort and a stronger sustainability slant. We also moved the Patagonia Multi Trails up in our rankings given their versatility for both running and hiking.

Our Team's Hiking Short Picks

  • Best Overall Hiking Shorts: Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts
  • Best Budget Hiking Shorts: Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts
  • A Durable Short with Great Storage: Kuhl Renegade Short
  • Best Quick-Drying Hiking Shorts: Patagonia Baggies 5”
  • A Versatile Short for Running and Hiking:  Patagonia Multi Trails

Best Overall Hiking Shorts

1. outdoor research ferrosi shorts 10" ($85).

Outdoor Research Ferrosi hiking shorts

Outdoor Research can be hit or miss in the performance department, but their Ferrosi collection is a real winner. We have a lot of experience with the namesake fabric—we’ve worn several variations of Ferrosi pants and softshell jackets over the years—and the shorts were similarly quick to impress. In sum, they’re lightweight, breathable, and stand up very well to long-term use. The generous amount of spandex in the design helps with durability (the fabric “gives” rather than tearing under pressure) and adds a nice dose of stretch and mobility for movement-dependent activities like hiking and backpacking. Finally, we love the versatile length and regular cut: The 10-inch shorts fell just above the knees on our 5’9” tester, providing decent coverage without feeling too long or baggy.

What’s not to like with the Ferrosi Shorts? First, the internal drawcord on the 10-inch inseam model isn’t as effective at dialing in fit as a built-in belt like you get with the prAna Stretch Zion II below, although the loops make it easy to add one (note: The 7-in. variation comes with a belt). Second, some may prefer a little more storage, although we personally love the simple yet practical layout that includes zippered pockets at the right hip and rear, as well as a drop-in left back pocket and hand pockets. Prior versions of the Ferrosi had reports of the waistband loosening over time, but Outdoor Research addressed the issue during a recent update, and we haven’t had any problems with security to date. And importantly, the retooled fabric now uses recycled nylon (46%) without compromising on quality, looks, or overall performance. It’s always a risk updating such a popular line, but we think OR did a great job this time around, making the latest Ferrosi our favorite overall design this season. See the Men's OR Ferrosi Shorts 10"   See the Women's OR Ferrosi Shorts 7"

Best Budget Hiking Shorts

2. columbia silver ridge cargo shorts ($50).

Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts

The Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts above are an undeniably premium and well-built design, but the $85 price tag will likely deter many budget-conscious shoppers. Enter the Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts, which will save you a considerable $35 while still offering good all-around performance. The 100% nylon construction is breathable and dries quickly, making them a great option for hikers and travelers alike. Storage is another highlight, including deep and easily accessible hand pockets, three massive cargo-style pockets (two at the back and one on the right leg), and a zippered security pocket on the left thigh. All told, for casual summer hiking and backpacking, the Silver Ridge is well appointed and a standout value.

What do you sacrifice by saving with the Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts? The most glaring omission is the lack of built-in stretch, which is a notable downside for mobility. By comparison, the Ferrosi above includes 14% spandex for a sizable boost in freedom of movement, although we appreciate that Columbia included a gusset to help when squatting or bending over. In addition, the zippers certainly aren’t the smoothest we’ve used, and the cheaper materials won’t hold up as well as the more premium designs here. Finally, some users report issues with the fit, including tightness around the hips and waist that’s particularly noticeable when ascending steep slopes. But you’d be hard-pressed to find better overall performance for less, which is why we’ve included the Silver Ridge here. For a stretchier but equally affordable alternative, we also like REI's Trailmade Shorts , although they lack the generous storage of the Columbia. See the Men's Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts

A Durable Short with Great Storage

3. kuhl renegade short ($79).

KUHL Renegade hiking shorts

Kuhl has made a name for themselves in the hiking apparel space with their distinctive utilitarian styling, which isn’t for everyone but does add a nice technical slant. Another Kuhl hallmark is their excellent build quality, which is readily apparent in the Renegade Short: The closure system includes a sturdy metal snap and oversized fly zipper, the length is practical with coverage down to the knee, and the fabric is stretchy yet tough with a noticeably high-end feel (it’s reminiscent of Patagonia’s Quandary below but a little thicker and tougher). And those who prioritize generous storage will be very pleased by the eight-pocket layout, including two hand pockets, two rear pockets, and two zippered side pockets that don’t get in the way like traditional cargo designs. Rounding out the build are drop-in-style pockets at the back/side of the leg, which don’t work well for valuables due to the lack of zippers but are great for items like snacks that you’ll want quick access to.

The Kuhl Renegade is decently streamlined considering the number of pockets, but there’s no denying that it’s bulkier and busier than many other options here. Some won’t mind this trade-off for the bump in storage, but we personally like a little more simplicity in our hiking shorts, especially on long day hikes and other mileage-heavy objectives. And at this price point, we prefer the stretchier and softer fabric that you get with OR’s Ferrosi above. But both are well-made and capable hiking designs, and the Renegade’s smart mix of durability and storage makes it very popular year after year. See the Men's Kuhl Renegade Short

Best Quick-Drying Hiking Shorts

4. patagonia baggies shorts 5” ($65).

Patagonia Baggies Shorts

Patagonia’s Baggies may look relatively unassuming at first glance, but there’s much more to these shorts than meets the eye. First is versatility: The Baggies fit the part for everything from hiking and water sports to everyday use, with specialized features for swimming like a hanging mesh liner and vertical pockets to limit drag. The all-nylon construction is also fast to dry yet surprisingly tough—great for quick dips along the trail during hot summer hikes. The elastic waistband is simple but decently comfortable with an interior drawcord for snugging things down, and we love the remarkable range of vibrant colorways and designs (18 between the two inseams at the time of publishing), including a couple retro-looking multi-tone options. All told, the Baggies hit a nice balance between style and performance, making them a classic choice for both in and out of the water.

What are the downsides? While we personally like the Baggies’ relaxed fit, some won’t love the looser cut for hiking. To be sure, the 5” inseam version we tested will be less prone to swishing than the  7” Baggies Longs , but the shorter length won’t work for everyone. The bright and board-short-like styling may also seem a little flashy, especially if you’re used to more traditional designs like the Kuhl Renegade above. If that’s the case, The North Face’s Rolling Sun Packable Shorts below are similarly quick to dry but have more standard and subdued looks (plus zippered storage, which the Baggies forego). Finally, the Baggies are a little stiff and lack the soft feel of designs like the Ferrosi above, but the laid-back fit and timeless styling have made them a summertime classic. Bonus: With a recent update, the Baggies are now built with Patagonia’s NetPlus fabric that’s made with nylon from recycled fishing nets. Other quick-drying and water-ready options to consider include REI’s Trailmade Amphib and Adidas’ Terrex Multi Shorts. See the Men's Patagonia Baggies 5"   See the Women's Patagonia Baggies 5"

A Versatile Short for Running and Hiking

5. patagonia multi trails ($79).

Patagonia Multi Trails trail running shorts

Running shorts are commonplace for hikers and thru-hikers thanks to their light and airy feel, but most designs fall short in features and durability, which makes Patagonia’s Multi Trails an intriguing option. Building off a standard trail running short—complete with a built-in boxer-brief liner—Patagonia incorporated some thoughtful hiking-focused features, including a fairly generous 8-inch length (many running shorts are much shorter) and beefed-up polyester shell fabric. Additionally, while many running shorts are lacking in storage, the Multi Trails sports two zippered pockets at the front and a snap pocket at the back (and the back pocket doubles as a stuff sack for the shorts). In practice, the zippered storage has proven invaluable on the trail and eliminated any concerns about securely stashing valuables and essentials.

Though it's not a master of any single discipline, the Multi Trails' versatility is what earns it a high spot on our list. Runners may prefer a little more stretch in the fabric—the shorts don't restrict movement but are certainly stiffer than your average running design—and a tougher nylon build would make the Multi Trails a bit more off-trail-ready. But sometimes, the sweet spot is finding an option that can do it all—even if you have to make some small sacrifices in the name of all-around performance. It’s here, as a jack of all trades, that the Multi Trails excels. See the Men's Patagonia Multi Trails   See the Women's Patagonia Multi Trails

Best of the Rest

6. prana stretch zion short ii ($75).

Prana Stretch Zion II hiking shorts

Right away, we’ll note that the original prAna Stretch Zion short—as well as its extremely popular pant sibling—used to be our go-to hiking option. However, we have to admit we’re a little let down by the follow-up II. As far as positives go, the latest ReZion fabric is more sustainable than ever with 95% recycled nylon while still hitting a nice mix of toughness and stretch. For reference, it’s thicker than both the Ferrosi above and Patagonia Quandary below and a bit more protective as a result (and importantly, it still breathes reasonably well). Further, the built-in belt is fairly unique in the hiking short market, and we’ve found the simple design to be very effective at quickly dialing in a fit and fine-tuning adjustments throughout the day. Finally, unlike the Stretch Zion Pant II, we think the shorts fit great and are quite comfortable.

Now for the downsides: The latest ReZion fabric has an odd and somewhat cheap and shiny look to it—which is especially noticeable in the sun—and we question prAna’s decision to swap the old metal button closure for a flimsier webbing/plastic design (it strikes us as more prone to failure over time). You also miss out on a zippered back pocket, which we like for travel and securing valuables. You do get a full cargo pocket on the left leg that can be accessed from either the top or side, but we’re not sold on the dual access since it requires securing both sides to prevent items from spilling out. To be clear, the Stretch Zion II still is a solid hiking short—and has plenty of appeal if you like the thicker and more substantial build—but we can’t help but feel like it’s a step back from the original. 7. Patagonia Quandary Shorts ($89)

Patagonia Quandary hiking shorts

Next up are the Patagonia Quandary Shorts, which go head-to-head with the Outdoor Research Ferrosi above as a lightweight and simple design with widespread appeal. Like the Ferrosi, the Quandary has a fairly streamlined but functional storage layout that comprises two drop-in-style hand pockets, two rear pockets (the left one has a zipper), and an additional zippered pocket at the right thigh. The fit adjustment system is similar, too, including an internal drawcord at the front to dial in tautness at the waist and loops for adding a belt if needed. The Ferrosi wins out in stretch and has a more softshell-like feel, but the latest Quandary is more supple than ever (the past version felt notably cheaper). And we appreciate that Patagonia upped the sustainability focus with the new model—the shorts are now made from recycled fishing nets—along with adding a new inseam length (8 in.).

That said, we do have some nitpicks with the design. First is the internal drawcord, which doesn't hold nearly as well as a built-in belt and requires retying throughout the day. Next are the Quandary's zippers, which don’t operate as smoothly as some of the competition, including the Ferrosi and Stretch Zion above. It’s not a major difference, but they do have a slightly cheaper and flimsier feel. As we touched on above, the OR also wins out in comfort with its softer materials, although the Quandary’s nylon-heavy build has a cleaner look that some will prefer for travel and everyday wear (plus, it's highly durable). For a slightly more streamlined alternative, we also like Patagonia's Terravia , which is stretchier than the Quandary and boasts more zippered storage but costs an additional $20 and comes in fewer sizes. 8. Arc’teryx Gamma Quick Dry Short ($120)

Arc'teryx Gamma Quick Dry hiking shorts

We’ve tested a lot of Arc’teryx’s technical hiking pants over the years, and many have been heavy and almost softshell-like in feel. Their Gamma Quick Dry Short bucks that trend, combining thin and quick-drying fabrics (hence the name) with practical storage and the premium fit and finish we’ve come to expect from the brand. All of the Gamma’s five pockets have zippers, which is pretty uncommon in the hiking short market, and we love Arc’teryx’s streamlined but functional integrated belt (as long as your pack’s hipbelt rides above the waistband, which has never been an issue for us). And despite their light and airy feel, the shorts are good at blocking wind and surprisingly durable to boot.

All in all, the Arc’teryx Gamma Quick Dry Shorts are a purpose-built option for warm-weather hiking—and a very high-quality one at that. However, $120 for a pair of hiking shorts is a tough sell, especially when you can get similar levels of performance and durability with cheaper options like the $85 OR Ferrosi, $89 Patagonia Quandary, and others above. The Ferrosi is a particularly strong alternative with comparable breathability and more stretch (14% vs. 6% for the Gamma)—although it doesn’t have a belt in the 10-inch version and is a little less premium-feeling. In the end, the Gamma’s value (or lack thereof) pushes it slightly down our rankings, but we still think it’s a fantastic all-around option. See the Men's Arc'teryx Gamma Quick Dry Short

9. Vuori Ripstop Short ($74)

Vuori Ripstop hiking shorts

Athleisure brand Vuori is a relative newcomer to the outdoor scene, but many folks (ourselves included) love the balance of fashion and function. True to form, their Ripstop Short here is easily one of the most stylish options on the market, combining super durable materials and practical storage (two zippered pockets) in a modern and good-looking package. In a departure from standard nylon and polyester constructions, the Ripstop’s cotton-heavy build does limit its backcountry appeal—we don’t advise bringing the shorts along on multi-day outings into the wilderness or into unpredictable weather (Colorado’s notorious mid-day thunderstorms, for instance). But the Ripstop Short excels as a summer day hiker and easily pulls double duty for everyday wear (the shorter 9-in. inseam helps), which is a winning combination for many.

Comfort is another highlight of the Vuori Ripstop Short’s design (and many cotton pants in general). It can’t match the mobility of performance options like the Patagonia Quandary, prAna Stretch Zion, or Outdoor Research Ferrosi above, but the touch of elastane (2%) and gusseted crotch offer enough give for most activities. We also found the unique waistband design—including a button, zippered fly, exterior drawstring, and elastic along the perimeter— to be very functional for dialing in fit. The biggest deterrent for many will be the lack of performance chops: Cotton doesn’t breathe all that well and holds onto moisture when wet, which is a bad combination for high exertion and warmer temperatures. But the Ripstop Short has its place as a casual option that can hold its own on easy to moderate day hikes, and we certainly appreciate the toughness and confidence-inspiring build quality. See the Men's Vuori Ripstop Short

10. Fjallraven Abisko Shorts ($110)

Fjallraven Abisko hiking shorts

We fell in love with women's Fjallraven Abisko Trekking Tights a few summers back and have used them extensively for everything from hiking and backpacking to multi-pitch rock climbing. While decidedly less technical, their Abisko Shorts are equally well executed with the premium workmanship we’ve come to expect from the Scandinavian brand. The headliner here is Fjallraven’s legendary G-1000 fabric, which uses a mix of polyester and cotton to effectively balance durability, moisture-wicking, and comfort. Another unique feature is the waist design, which is slightly lower at the front and higher in the back to maximize comfort when carrying a pack. Added up, the Abisko Shorts are one of the most purpose-built options here and highly capable for hiking, backpacking, and even climbing.

As with most Fjallraven products we’ve tested, all of the Abisko’s details are well sorted, too: You get extra fabric at the crotch to minimize rubbing, sturdy metal hardware, and functional storage including flap-protected cargo pockets at each side and hipbelt-friendly hand pockets with zippers, the latter of which is a rarity in the hiking short market. Fjallraven products don’t come cheap—at $110, the Abisko Shorts are the second-priciest option on our list after the $120 Arc’teryx Gamma Quick Dry above—but that’s certainly not a knock on quality or overall craftsmanship. And we also want to touch on the Abisko Hike Shorts ($120) , which are similarly technical but thinner and more ventilated for true hot-weather use. See the Men's Fjallraven Abisko Shorts

11. REI Co-op Sahara Cargo Shorts ($60)

REI Co-op Sahara Cargo Shorts

REI’s Sahara collection is their flagship hiking bottoms line, and the Cargo Shorts here are a nice reflection of the brand’s focus on value. For just $10 more than the Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts above, the Sahara uses noticeably higher-quality materials, including a small dose of spandex (4%) for improved mobility (the Columbia is 100% nylon). The fabric itself is soft and supple—on par with pricier alternatives like the Patagonia Quandary above—and the shorts have the light, airy, and breathable feel that we love for hot-weather hikes. Storage isn’t bad either, including dual cargo pockets (one with a flap and one with a zipper) as well as standard hand and rear pockets. Taken together, the Sahara Cargo Shorts are another well-rounded REI design at a good price.

In this case, however, the devil is in the details. Specifically, the Sahara Shorts have a loose fit in the legs that’s comfortable but does give them a slightly less modern look than much of the competition (of course, this part is subjective). Additionally, while we appreciate that the hand pockets are deep, they extend all the way into the cargo pocket space and can create some awkward overlap when both pockets are in use. The belt loops are also noticeably tiny and couldn’t accommodate my Arcade belt (a pretty classic hiking choice), and the plastic button closure isn’t very confidence-inspiring with thin thread holding it in place. Again, the Sahara Cargo Shorts do feel more premium and durable than the Columbia Silver Ridge above, but we were admittedly disappointed by the finer details.  See the Men's REI Sahara Cargo Shorts   See the Women's Sahara Bermuda Shorts

12. The North Face Rolling Sun Packable Shorts ($65)

The North Face Rolling Sun shorts

Patagonia’s Baggies above are the classic choice for mixed hiking and water activities, but The North Face’s Rolling Sun Packable Shorts are arguably the more versatile option. The lack of hanging liner is a plus for traditional hikers, and the thin fabric with its unique textured interior dries out very quickly after a soaking. The shorts are also extremely soft and stretchy, and the styling crosses over well for everyday use. You can even pack them into their own pocket, which is great for travel or stuffing away into a pack on a longer backpacking trip that may involve some lake dips. Finally, the Rolling Sun offers more coverage than the Baggies with a 9-inch inseam (there’s also a 7-in. version available) for about the same price.

Why the last-place finish for The North Face Rolling Sun Packable Shorts? While we like how soft and stretchy the fabric is, the trade-off is that it’s not all that tough. In fact, it’s a pretty clear step down from the burlier Patagonia Baggies and noticeably less durable than the rest of our top picks above. In practice, this means the shorts have been more prone to scuffs and damage from contact with rock, which greatly limits their backcountry appeal. To be fair, the Rolling Sun Shorts are a solid option for warm-weather hiking and as a backup short for swimming on backpacking trips, but the drop in durability and abrasion resistance is a significant and undeniable drawback—especially for those who are hard on their gear. Hiking Short Comparison Table

About our testing process.

The Switchback Travel team has tested dozens of hiking shorts over the years, from technical designs with tough fabrics and ample storage to quick-drying options for water sports like paddle boarding and kayaking. Former editor-in-chief John Ellings compiled our initial list of 13 picks in 2022 after extensive testing from the Utah desert to his home in the wet and rugged Pacific Northwest. Managing editor Sarah Nelson has also provided input on many women’s designs (for a full list, we’ve put together a separate women’s hiking shorts round-up ). Contributing editor Nick Mott took over this guide in 2024 and continues to put new shorts through their paces on hiking and backpacking adventures in Montana.

In putting together our current list of 12 hiking shorts, we drew from our own on-trail experiences, reached out to testers for additional info, and scoured online hiking forums for feedback from the wider hiking community. When we test hiking shorts, we take them into the field and evaluate how the fabrics hold up, how quick they are to dry after getting wet, and how they fit and feel on different body types (we often have both male and female testers). We also pay close attention to the waistband style and number of pockets, as comfort and convenience are top priorities for many hikers (ourselves included). Our list changes over time, and we’ll be sure to include any noteworthy additions as they become available.

Hiking Short Buying Advice

What defines a hiking short.

  • Wearing Running Shorts for Hiking

Hiking Short Materials

Thickness and durability, quick-drying hiking shorts, waistband styles, inseams and length, sizing and fit, upf and sun ratings, sustainability, women’s-specific hiking shorts, hiking shorts vs. hiking pants.

There’s certainly no rulebook on hiking attire, and in 2024, people hit the trail in everything from running shorts to quick-drying, water-ready designs. Depending on the conditions and day’s objective, one of those might even be your best option. That said, there's also a cadre of shorts purpose-built for hiking, which tout features like durable and breathable fabrics, functional storage, extended coverage, waistbelts that fit securely and ride comfortably underneath a backpack hipbelt, and more. If you're looking for the best-performing and longest-lasting tool for the job, hiking shorts are a great place to start. And the good news is that the market is extremely varied, from technical, performance-ready offerings to more casual designs that look just as good in town as they do on the trail.

Hiking shorts (in pile on rock)

Wearing Running Shorts for Hiking

We’ll be honest: We often wear running shorts while hiking. In terms of benefits, they’re lightweight, offer great comfort and freedom of movement, and dry quickly—they're especially great for unseasonably hot days or when mixing some running in on your hike. However, there are several clear downsides. For one, storage is lacking: Some running shorts have no pockets, while others have just one or two small pouches for a set of keys or pair of earbuds. Due to their thinner constructions, running shorts also won't hold up well to trail abuse, and dollar for dollar, hiking shorts will certainly provide a lot more value over time. Finally, with short inseams and minimal fabric, running shorts offer very limited protection from the sun, wind and cold, pesky bugs, and sharp branches. But we do love the comfort they provide and think that hiking shorts could take some cues from running shorts when it comes to simple yet comfortable waistbands and free-flowing designs.

Hiking shorts (running short alternative)

For those who like the idea of hiking in a running short, there are a few designs that stand out to us as more capable than others. We like Patagonia’s Multi Trails collection in particular, which combines features from both trail running and hiking designs. From the former, you get light and airy fabrics along with a built-in boxer-brief liner, but like the latter, you get the longer inseam, multiple zippered pockets, and beefed-up polyester shell fabric. It’s certainly not the most versatile option—we prefer a little more stretch for running, and standard nylon hiking pants offer better toughness and weather resistance. That said, some may find those trade-offs worth it for the added mobility, ventilation, and comfort of the Multi Trails and other running-focused designs.

Like hiking pants, most hiking shorts are made of nylon or polyester. These materials are reasonably durable, breathable, good at wicking moisture, and offer great freedom of movement due to their lightweight makeup. Many designs—like our top-ranked Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts and prAna Stretch Zion II—also incorporate some elastane or spandex for added stretch, which is a real boon for everything from high-stepping over logs to setting up camp. The added give and thickness also make these shorts among the most durable here, great for brushing up against rock and branches, sitting on rough surfaces, and withstanding the wear and tear of a heavy backpack.

Hiking shorts (backpacking uphill in Ferrosi shorts)

We’ve also included a handful of outliers on this list. The Vuori Ripstop Short , for example, is made with 98% cotton, a rarity these days in outdoor clothing. In general, cotton lacks the durability and mobility of nylon or polyester, and unlike synthetic blends, it absorbs water, meaning it’s not as quick-drying and can get heavy when wet. The upside is that the Ripstop Short is impressively comfortable and stylish, which is all some hikers need for casual days on the trail. In the end, it’s a good idea to tailor your hiking short choice to your objective: We prefer stretch-nylon blends for serious hiking, 100% nylon shorts for water sports, and cotton or fitted designs for more casual days out.

One of the headlining features of a hiking short is durability, especially when compared to casual or running-specific designs. Hiking shorts are meant to take a beating on the trail and around camp and ideally should last you multiple seasons of use. However, we still see a lot of variation within the category. As mentioned above, nylon and polyester shorts are generally more robust than cotton styles, and (in most cases) thicker designs are more resistant to abrasion. We've also found that some—but not too much—added stretch can increase durability, allowing a fabric to give rather than tear when stressed.

Hiking shorts (hiking in desert)

Considering the factors above, one of the most durable shorts here is the Kuhl Renegade , which uses a mix of 95% nylon and 5% spandex that provides a nice balance of stretch and toughness. And it's also worth noting that there are some exceptions to these rules: The Vuori Ripstop Shorts (98% cotton), for example, feature a strong Teflon coating for tear and stain resistance that far exceeds most cotton designs. On a similar note, one of our testers wore a pair of Patagonia Baggies (relatively thin nylon with no stretch) for over five seasons of mountain guiding without sustaining a single hole or tear.

When you're hiking in the heat of summer, nothing beats a refreshing dip in a trail-side lake or stream. Most of the hiking shorts above will dry out fairly quickly in warm and sunny conditions, but thin, nylon designs like the Patagonia Baggies are the best tool for the job (The North Face’s polyester Rolling Sun Packable Shorts are similarly quick to dry). On the other hand, thicker synthetic options like the Fjallraven Abisko Shorts and those with more added stretch tend to absorb more water, and cotton is the worst culprit of all. Many shorts will also add a durable water-repellent finish to keep water from penetrating the fabric, but keep in mind that this can degrade over time (you can always revive it by applying a new treatment like Nikwax’s TX.Direct Spray-On ). In the end, if you're looking for a quick-drying short for trail-side swimming and other water-based activities, your best bet is a thin, nylon design with relatively short inseam, mesh pockets, and not too much added bulk at the waist (running shorts work well, too).

Hiking shorts (The North Face Rolling Sun shorts in Utah)

Finding a pair of hiking shorts that fits well can be a daunting task, but the good news is that there are a wide variety of waistband designs on the market for fine-tuning fit. Starting at the basic end of the spectrum are standard button-and-fly closures with belt loops (like the Kuhl Renegade and Fjallraven Abisko ), while others come with elastic waistbands, integrated belts, and/or drawstrings. There are inherent pros and cons to each style, and a final decision will come down to personal preference and your intended uses.

Hiking shorts (waistband comparison)

As we mentioned, designs with standard button-and-fly closures frequently come with belt loops. You’ll have to provide the belt separately, but it should be pretty easy to get a customized fit all around. On the flip side, some shorts already come with integrated belts or drawstrings for dialing in fit right out of the box. That said, you'll want to make sure they're fairly low-profile if you're wearing a backpacking pack or harness, as any excess material or bulk can get in the way and cause discomfort. Shorts like the Patagonia Multi Trails and Baggies and Vuori Ripstop Short also build a strip of elastic into their waistbands, which adds a nice dose of comfort and stretch around the waist. In the end, there’s no all-encompassing solution, and you’ll want to go with what works and feels best for you: Some prefer the sleekness of belt-free waistbands, while others care more about fit customization than additional bulk under a hipbelt.

Hiking shorts (built-in belt on prAna Stretch Zion II)

Functional storage is a key consideration for many hikers (ourselves included). Ideally, we want a pair of shorts to be able to fit a smartphone in at least one of its pockets and secure items like a key or lip balm in another zippered pocket. Unfortunately, these features aren’t always present, and if storage is important to you, you’ll have to shop discriminately. That said, all of the shorts listed above include at least one pocket, and many sport upwards of four or five: two on the front, two at the back, and perhaps one on the side (keep in mind though, these aren’t always super functional). Given that the topic of pockets and storage is so important to us, we make sure to call it out in the write-ups above.

Hiking shorts (closeup of zippered pocket)

The hiking shorts on our list come in a range of lengths, which is most commonly measured in terms of the inseam (the length from the crotch seam to the hem). These span from the Patagonia Baggies (5 in.) to the Arc’teryx Gamma Quick Dry and Fjallraven Abisko Shorts (both 11 in.). We also often see shorts offered in multiple inseam options, such as the OR Ferrosi Shorts (7 or 10 in.), Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts (10 or 12 in.), and many other picks above. Exceptions include the Patagonia Multi Trails, Vuori Ripstop Short, Fjallraven Abisko, and REI Sahara Cargo.

Hiking shorts (Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts in red canyon)

The length of short you choose will predominantly come down to a matter of personal preference, although it’s important to acknowledge that longer shorts do offer more protection from both the sun and sharp objects like branches and boulders (on the other hand, shorter designs generally provide more freedom of movement and ventilation). Finally, keep in mind that some manufacturers also list an outseam measurement, which specifies the length from the waist to the hem. This is far more common for women’s-specific designs and boardshorts but nevertheless can be helpful for giving you an idea of how high-waisted the short might be, which many hikers will appreciate for added coverage when bending over and high-stepping over trail obstacles.

We’ve put up with our fair share of baggy, ill-fitting hiking shorts over the years, but the good news is that the market has improved significantly of late, incorporating stretchy fabrics and features like sleek elastic waistbands and gussets for better range of motion. Many brands have also expanded their lineups to include a range of plus-sized options, which we’re happy to see (REI Co-op and Kuhl are leaders in this movement). And as we mentioned above, it’s fairly common for a short to come in multiple inseam lengths—the prAna Stretch Zion II , for example, is offered in 8, 10, and 12-inch lengths, while the women’s Halle II comes in 5- and 7-inch options. As with hiking pants, it’s best to try on several shorts before you buy, but we do our best to call out fit and sizing discrepancies in the write-ups above to help online shoppers.

Hiking shorts (hiking in Utah in Outdoor Research Ferrosi)

Some hiking shorts boast a UPF rating, which is a measurement of their ability to block harmful UV sun rays. A couple examples include the Outdoor Research Ferrosi Shorts and REI Sahara Cargo Shorts (both UPF 50+). Keep in mind, however, that the lack of leg coverage does detract from shorts’ sun-blocking ability. In other words, unlike with full-coverage hiking pants, you’ll likely still need to apply sunscreen to your lower legs. As usual, it will help to identify what you’ll be using your shorts for before determining if you want or need UPF protection.

Hiking shorts (OR Ferrosi fabric closeup)

The outdoor industry has seen a big jump in sustainable practices and eco-friendly materials of late, and hiking shorts are no exception. In this case, common measures include the use of recycled fabrics and bluesign-approved materials, the latter of which indicates they’re safe for the environment, workers, and consumers. Finally, some shorts—including Patagonia’s Baggies collection —also use PFC-free DWR coatings that forgo the use of harmful perfluorocarbons.

REI Co-op, prAna, and Patagonia are three leaders in the sustainability realm, as evidenced by the Sahara Cargo Shorts (96% recycled nylon and bluesign-approved fabrics), Stretch Zion II Shorts (95% recycled nylon and bluesign-approved fabrics), and Multi Trails Shorts (90% recycled polyester and also bluesign-approved). The Multi Trails also tack on a Fair Trade Certification, indicating that Patagonia put extra money into production to ensure that workers have access to fair compensation, healthcare and childcare programs, and more. And their Quandary and Baggies are made with nylon from recycled fishing nets, which is an innovative step toward reducing ocean plastic pollution. In the end, we appreciate when brands go the extra mile in being eco-conscious and transparent about their practices (and particularly when it doesn't compromise quality and performance).

Hiking shorts (pitching REI tent in Patagonia Baggies)

Our picks above were selected primarily based on the experiences of male-identifying testers, although you’ll notice we link to both the men’s and women’s versions whenever available. Additionally, due to this category’s noteworthy variation in styles, we’ve also tested and compiled a unique round-up of the best women’s hiking shorts where you’ll find many of the same models here (names and colorways sometimes differ) as well as a variety of women’s-specific hiking shorts.

Hiking shorts (men's prAna Stretch Zion II and women's Halle II)

If you're hitting the trail in mild to hot conditions, you'll be faced with the decision of whether to wear a pair of hiking pants or shorts. With pants, you get significantly more protection (from sun, sharp objects, and bugs), and if temperatures drop or the wind picks up, your legs will be better insulated against the elements. Pants generally offer more storage as well, don't bunch up when worn underneath a harness, and can guard against debris getting into your hiking shoes or boots. In short, they're the more high-performance design and generally our choice for variable days, mountain environments, or when we want maximum protection.

Hiking pants (hiking in Patgonia in the Arc'teryx Gamma Quick Dry)

On the flip side, shorts are by far the more breathable choice, and they also tend to dry out more quickly after getting wet thanks to their more minimalist builds. We generally prefer them on hot days or when we know we'll be playing in or around water (or needing to ford rivers). They're also the better choice if you're mixing in a little running with your hiking: With less fabric, shorts won't weigh you down as much as pants, and you won't have to deal with the legs brushing up against each other with each stride. Oftentimes, we'll bring shorts for the hiking portion of our day and pack a pair of pants for our destination, whether it's a climbing route, a campsite, or an exposed mountaintop. For the most versatile option, convertible pants (like the Patagonia Quandary Convertible Pants ) zip off at the knee and convert to shorts, but the design is polarizing and certainly not for everyone. The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
