Active for nearly 40 years, Boston’s combination of hard progressive rock, phenomenal guitar work, and soaring vocals is still as riveting and relevant as ever. In 2013, the acclaimed rockers dropped their sixth studio album – and first since the death of lead singer Brad Delp in 2007 – Life, Love & Hope. Delp sings on a handful of the tracks, while several other vocalists fill out the rest of the album. 2012 saw the band touring for ticket holders across the country, performing fan-favorite songs from their hit-filled back catalogue. Boston’s self-titled debut album came out in 1976, catapulting the band to stardom with the smash singles “Long Time,” “More Than a Feeling,” and “Peace of Mind,” remaining on the Billboard charts for an astonishing 132 weeks and becoming the best-selling debut album in US history. After opening concerts for Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Foghat, Boston charted its own headlining tour and became the first band to play Madison Square Garden in their New York City debut. Their second album Don’t Look Back came out in 1978 and sold over seven million copies, with its title track reaching No. 4 on the charts. Boston’s third album Third Stage came out in 1986, expanding their sound with electronic drum samples, and remained the No. 1 album for four weeks on the strength of top 20 singles “Amanda,” “Can’tcha Say” and “We’re Ready.” 1994’s platinum-selling Walk On followed, as well as 2002’s Corporate America.

Jjett & boston rocked.
Joan Jett & Boston brought me back to High School!!! Great Memories!!! The 2017 Performance Out did 2016!!!! Awesomeness!!!!
Boston was great
I went to see Boston to say I did, I figured with Brad Delph and others deceased or no longer with the band, it would be ok at best. MAN WAS I WRONG! This was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, the song selection was awesome, the music was soulful, Sounded like the 70's & 80's and the light show rocked my world. This was the biggest concert surprise I have ever had. My first Concert was ZZ Top in 1981 Loverboy opened for them. If you get the chance to see Boston, take it, Tommy DeCarlo does have the pipes to hit the Brad Delph notes.
Boston Rocks again at Montage
Great Show! enjoyed the show every moment with my son. Meeting my neighbors and co-workers was surprising.
Sorry fans, but this was a downer for me in some ways: the lead singer is phenomenally talented but he sooooo lacks stage presence/exuberance; he just schlepps back and forth on the stage while he sings like there's no giant crowd out there. Also, it was too heavily "The Tom Scholz Show". Having what's left of Boston the band at the Boston Gahden was thrilling and felt like the old days though.
the concert at Budweiser stage was the best I have seen. I have seen them over 5 times. Incredible. They are like a fine wine; they get better with age.. My daughter got these tickets for my birthday and we had an amazing time!!
The whole concert was extraordinary the sound, the lights and the location was extraordinary
Boston songs don't die
Very memorable concert. Great crowd at Lakeview Amphitheater. Must see for Boston fans. Joan Jett was good as the warm-up band
Awesome Boston!
WMGK house band Kategory 5 kicked off a great night of rock & roll. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts proved they can rock with the best. Boston had the place rocking all night. Both Joan Jett and Boston played song, after song with very little talk in between. From one great song right into another. It was just one great night.
No surprises - Boston delivered the hits
They sounded great, played all the hits and had a fantastic light show. Our upgrade to the RBC box seats was an unexpected added bonus.
BOSTON IS AWESOME!!!

Your Guide to the Biggest Concerts Coming to Greater Boston in 2023
Several big names in music are making stops in the boston area in 2023, including taylor swift, janet jackson, billy joel and more, by matt fortin • published december 28, 2022 • updated on december 28, 2022 at 11:06 am.
Live music was one of the pandemic's major casualties in 2020 and for much of 2021, but concerts seem to be full steam ahead in Greater Boston as 2023 quickly approaches.
Some of music's biggest names are hitting the road in the coming year, and many of them are including stops in Greater Boston. Here's a look at some of the shows slated to play the Bay State in the new year.
Taylor Swift
Hot off the heals of her mega-hit album "Midnights," pop superstar Taylor Swift is hitting the road with The Eras Tour, which will have several shows at Foxboro's Gillette Stadium. If they were able to get tickets, New England Swifties will have a chance to sing along to their favorite Taylor songs on May 19, 20 and 21 at Gillette.

Swift will be joined by Phoebe Bridgers and GAYLE during her Foxboro shows.
The 33-year-old pop-country crossover artist has seen massive success in 2022, so much so that high demand for concert tickets crashed Ticketmaster's website during the Verified Fan presale, sending many fans into a frenzy.
Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel
Two legendary names in music are teaming up for a handful of stadium shows in 2023.
Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks are playing a number of concerts together across the country, including Gillette Stadium.
What started off as a "one night only" show, has morphed into a seven concert affair, including stops in Inglewood, California, Arlington, Texas, Nashville, Tennessee and more.
The pair's Foxboro show is the final one scheduled, and is slated for Sept. 23.
Janet Jackson
The youngest sibling of the Jackson musical dynasty is stopping in the Bay State as she embarks on the Together Again Tour.
Janet Jackson's Massachusetts show will be on May 19 at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. She'll be joined by special guest Ludacris.
Jackson, who is known for decades of hit songs that include "Rhythm Nation" and "All for You," also has promised new music on the tour. Jackson hasn't released a full album since 2015's "Unbreakable," but has teased new musical efforts over the past couple of years.
Shania Twain
The Queen of Country Pop is setting the stage for a big year in 2023.
Shania Twain's new album — "Queen of Me" — is due out on Feb. 3, and then she's set to embark on a major world tour.
Twain will be stopping at Mansfield's Xfinity Center on July 9. The tour will take her across North America and into Europe as well, to support her upcoming studio effort.
The first single off the new album, "Waking Up Dreaming," was released in September. "Queen of Me" will be Twain's first album since 2017 once its released.
Carrie Underwood
Another member of country music royalty will be stopping in Massachusetts in 2023.
American Idol winner and now music icon Carrie Underwood will play TD Garden on her Denim and Rhinestones Tour on Feb. 17.
Underwood's ninth studio album, "Denim and Rhinestones," was released in June of 2022. She launched her supporting tour in the fall in South Carolina.
Hip hop artist YG will be stopping in Boston on his Red Cup Tour on Feb. 20, as he traverses the country with other acts like Ohgeesy and Day Sulan. YG will play the MGM Music Hall at Fenway.
YG has been active in the rap scene for over a decade, and is known for a string of commercially successful albums and singles, as well as high profile collaborations with Nicki Minaj and Drake.
Zac Brown Band
The country music group Zac Brown Band will be playing America's original ballpark next summer.
The band will be stopping at Boston's Fenway Park on Aug. 19, as part of a major tour that will bring them to Australia, the United Kingdom and to cities across the U.S.
The Zac Brown Band has seen mainstream commercial success since the 2008 release of their hit single, "Chicken Fried."

Things To Do
Boston’s extreme on ‘rise’ again with new album, tour.
“Rise” thumps along nicely for two minutes. The lead track from “Six,” Extreme’s first album in 15 years, “Rise” makes use of a tough riff, big chorus, and furious stomp. But the first half of the song is purely prologue to Nuno Bettencourt’s guitar solo.
Bettencourt’s guitar breakdown is a Frankenstein’s monster built out of blues-on-speed, neo-classical metal, triple time prog rock, and thrashy and trashy grunge (and a ton of indescribable-and-infinitely -complex flourishes).
“There are two ways to solo, one is that you are thinking, ‘How can I show off here, how can I impress people,’ and I think that’s the bad way to go,” Bettencourt told the Herald. “The other is that it doesn’t have to impress anybody else. But it has to excite you… There’s a feeling that you get and it’s the same feeling you got when you first started to play.”
Bettencourt knows he’s on to something good when he gets that teenage jolt. He got it when he came up with the solo on “Rise.” So did a million other listeners.
The song has been streamed millions of times – and heralded the return of the dearly missed Boston band (Extreme comes home Aug. 5 with a gig at Roadrunner). Youtube clips analyzing the solo have been streamed in equal numbers. Many have declared it “the solo of the century,” which seems both ridiculous and (if you’re into Eddie Van Halen style guitar) perfectly credible. It wasn’t until a few friends and heroes chimed in that he realized “Rise” was connecting on a massive level.
“I was getting texts from peers, people like Steve Lukather and Brian May, and they’re telling me, ‘Hey, this is really cool,” Bettencourt said. “I thought, ‘What the hell is going on? Something is different here.’ I know they were raving about the solo, but it’s not just the solo.”
The thing is, the “Rise” lead is one of half a dozen jaw droppers on “Six” – try the awkward, awesome mess of notes on “Thicker Than Blood” next. But “Rise” was paired with a video that saw Extreme back in action, thrilled, locked in and blasting off. It wasn’t an iPhone-shot video of someone at home covering “Eruption” note for note. It was a rock band flouting their chemistry and charisma.
“We follow this new generation of guitar players on Instagram or Facebook and they’re in their studio or their bedroom blowing your mind playing guitar,” Bettencourt said. “You like it or throw a comment down and move on with your day. All the sudden you get a rock band in a video who is all in emotionally.”
“I think what people saw in the ‘Rise’ video was the mythology of rock ‘n’ roll that’s been missing,” he added.
Extreme has never been able to replicate the majesty of Queen or bombast of Van Halen. But they’ve done a hell of a job trying. And trying – what Bettencourt called “a band being all in” – matters a lot.
“Rise” might not be the solo of the century. It might not even be the best solo on the new album. But it’s great that it’s inspired people to passionately debate rock mythology five decades after “We Will Rock You.”

About Aerosmith
Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith have sold more than 150 million albums around the world, produced genre-defining music videos such as “Amazing,” “Crazy,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Livin’ On The Edge,” and “Love In An Elevator,” and launched extravagant record-shattering global tours, most recently with their smash hit Las Vegas residency. The band has broken numerous boundaries, including becoming the first rock band with a massive commercially successful hip-hop collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” and the first hard rock band to appear during a Super Bowl Halftime Show with their 2001 performance, and in 1999, Aerosmith became the first band to have their own themed attraction at Disney World in Florida and later Paris with the launch of the Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. For more information, visit Aerosmith.com .
About The Black Crowes
The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards – their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at its very best – gritty, loud, and in your face. Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they’ve made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker , the album that put them on the map. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it’s finally here – Happiness Bastards is out now.

Aerosmith announces farewell tour return, new date for Boston concert
Aerosmith announced this week that its “Peace Out” farewell tour is set to resume in September.
The tour went on hiatus last fall and was indefinitely postponed while lead singer Steven Tyler recovered from damaged vocal cords and a fractured larynx.
“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” the band wrote in a social media post announcing the postponement. “As a result, all the currently scheduled PEACE OUT shows must be postponed to sometime in 2024, with new dates to be announced as soon as we know more.”
The band will kick off its return to the road with two newly added shows in Pennsylvania, first at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, followed by a show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Sept. 23. Rockers The Black Crowes are also joining Aerosmith on tour as special guests.

After last year’s New Year’s Eve performance was postponed, Aerosmith’s holiday homecoming stop in Boston will now take place on Dec. 31 at TD Garden, with what is billed as “an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band,” according to a press release.
Guitarist Joe Perry previously promised a return to the road in an interview with the Globe last winter.
“But with any luck we will be back out late summer and fall of 24,” Perry said. “And there’s always next New Year’s Eve! Stay tuned for that.”
Alongside the previously announced tour schedule, Aerosmith plans to make an extra stop in Florida at the Kia Center in Orlando on Feb. 11. The tour wraps with a final set in Buffalo, N.Y. at the KeyBank Center on Feb. 25.
All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows, and tickets for the rescheduled dates and newly added shows go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com .

Aerosmith Peace Out tour dates: How to get tickets to their rescheduled Phoenix concert
Aerosmith have announced 2024 rescheduled dates on their farewell tour for the concerts they postponed last year as Steven Tyler recovered from damage to his vocal cords, an injury sustained during a New York concert.
The Peace Out Tour will now bring Aerosmith to Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, with the Black Crowes. The concert had been scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023 .
The Boston rockers postponed all remaining dates in late September and shared the news on social media.
"Unfortunately, Steven's vocal injury is more serious than initially thought," they wrote. "His doctors have confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx, which requires ongoing care."
The post went on to note that Tyler was "receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential."
Aerosmith's Peace Out farewell tour will celebrate 5 decades of hits
Aerosmith also added three new dates, including Pittsburgh, where the Peace Out Tour will relaunch on Friday, Sept. 20.
The tour will pay homage to five decades of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits as they celebrate more than 50 years as one of America’s greatest rock bands.
They’re promising an “electrifying” show in an immersive 360-degree production with THX calibrating the audio in each arena.
Aerosmith farewell tour hailed as 'positively brilliant' and 'epic'
When the Peace Out Tour kicked off in September 2023, the Associated Press lauded it as "positively brilliant," while USA TODAY noted that “ the band was in peak form for this victory lap ."
The Philadelphia Inquirer praised Aerosmith’s "ability to make such a grand-scale performance feel like a raw and raucous club date,” while People described the show as “epic,” declaring that "Aerosmith is peacing out with a bang.”

Just a Few of the Biggest Concert Tours of 2024, from Olivia Rodrigo to Bad Bunny
Posted: April 14, 2024 | Last updated: April 14, 2024
Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.
Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.
1) Taylor Swift
Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.
There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.
2) Olivia Rodrigo
This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.
3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

A spectator's guide to the 2024 Boston Marathon: What to know
On Monday, more than 30,000 runners will participate in the 128th Boston Marathon and many more will flock to the course sidelines to show their support and cheer on friends, family, and complete strangers.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the current starting line in Hopkinton . Initially, the race started in Ashland because it was about 26 miles on the train from the Boston Athletic Association's headquarters. When the official length of the marathon was extended, organizers had to move the race out a little further to where runners start their journey today.
If you want to be a part of the celebration, but don’t have the legs to run 26.2 miles , check out our spectator guide to the 2024 Boston Marathon:
When does the Boston Marathon start?

What can and can't I bring with me to the course?
The Massachusetts State Police has released a guide of what spectators can bring with them if they're looking to cheer runners on.
The list of banned items for spectators on the course:
- fireworks or other explosives
- suitcases or large packages
- backpacks or bags carried over the shoulder.
- "props" like flagpoles or military gear
- class bottles or anything larger than 1 liter.
- large blankets
Also, do not go on the course yourself. There are designated crossing areas and barriers to prevent people from wandering into the way of runners.

Who is running the 2023 Boston Marathon
The heart and soul of the Marathon, though, comes from the nearly 30,000 amateur runners who make up the bulk of the field.
Make sure to keep an eye out for some famous faces in the field. One that might be easy to spot is former Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara , who stands 6-foot-9 and is running his second Boston Marathon and running for Team Hoyt.

What is interesting about the Boston Marathon course
The race course runs through eight communities, starting in downtown Hopkinton. Runners start by making the comparatively short 0.7-mile walk from Hopkinton High School to the starting line in front of the Town Common.
The course then winds through Union Street in Ashland, downtown Framingham along Waverly Street and through Central Street in Natick as it nears the halfway point near the Natick-Wellesley line.
"Everyone tends to focus on the uphills, but I think the biggest challenge in the MetroWest section is actually the two huge downhills that exhaust the runners’ quads," said Mark Goldschmidt, a member of the Greater Framingham Runners Club, who has run the marathon twice. "The first is literally at the start, where the road goes steeply downhill for about a half mile. Then you have a pretty long gradual incline through Ashland that starts at the new public service building. Another deceptive one is on the Framingham/Natick line that passes Wendy’s. "
The course continues northeast as it heads up Washington Street in Wellesley and Newton, then heading down Commonwealth Avenue and up “Heartbreak Hill” as the runners push past the 20-mile mark. The race wraps up as runners head around Coolidge Corner in Brookline before the furious finish down Beacon Street, ending on Boylston Street in Boston, near the Boston Public Library.

Starting line to Heartbreak Hill to Wellesley College 'Scream Tunnel': Where to watch along the Boston Marathon Route
While there are plenty of memorable spots to watch closer to the finish line of the race, from the Wellesley College “Scream Tunnel” to Heartbreak Hill and, of course, the finish line on Boylston Street, there are plenty of underrated spots to watch the competition as well.
Not only is the Framingham Train Depot, at 417 Waverly St., a great place to see runners, but spectators can easily hop on the commuter rail and take the train into the city to see the finish as well. The same can be said for the Ashland commuter rail spot, which is less than a mile from the course in downtown Ashland.
Still rewriting history: Kathrine Switzer reflects on running Boston 50 years later
"As a runner and Framingham native, I was so proud to run through Framingham when I ran in 2017," Goldschmidt said. "The rich diversity that I get to witness daily as a Framingham High School teacher shone brightly that day. There were great crowds at La Cantina and the 6 Mile Moment from Monnick’s Supply, past the train station and all the way past the Beaver Street intersection. I was amazed at the very enthusiastic crowd at TJ’s in Ashland, too, but it’s land-locked so people have to get there early before the road is closed."
Fiske Pond in Natick, where crowds pack both sides of the street with the water as a backdrop, is a quintessential slice of springtime in New England, and the Natick Town Common is also regularly packed with spectators taking in the action.

Food, music, beers and other things to do
The Marathon route will be filled with food, music and activities for spectators of all ages.
Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers is hosting a special event, in conjunction with Downtown Framingham Inc., in its parking lot. The event will feature live music, snacks, activities for children and of course, craft beer, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The brewery also announced they will have two special beers exclusively available at their beer hall to celebrate the Marathon. Boston Rising is a double hoppy lager with an ABV of 8 percent, and Modern Hell is a helles that comes in at a 5.2 percent ABV.
Another brewery, the appropriately named Start Line Brewing in Hopkinton , is hosting after-party once things begin winding down. The event features live music from The Spare Parts Band, food and beer. It starts at 2 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online for $15.
Start Line has a Marathon Wheat on tap they describe as "[d]esigned to celebrate the people and communities that make Marathon season so special." Also, through April 21, showing a ticket to the Marathon Expo at the Hynes Convention Center will get you 20 percent off food.
Additional restaurants that offer race-side dining include, but not limited to:
- TJ's Food and Spirits , 355 West Union St., Ashland
- Morse Tavern , 85 East Central St., Natick
- The Local , 11 Forest St., Wellesley
- Cityside Tavern , 1960 Beacon St., Brighton
- The Washington Square Tavern , 714 Washington St., Brookline
- Atlantic Fish Co. , 761 Boylston St., Boston (its Marathon watch party is sold out)

In Transit: Notes from the Underground
Jun 06 2018.
Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.
Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.
The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.
A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour
A Brief Introduction
Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.
The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.
The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.
It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)
In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.
For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.
Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55₽ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide
Buying Tickets
- Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
- You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
- There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
- Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
- If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
- You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
- You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
Rules, spoken and unspoken
No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.
Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)
Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.
Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).
An Easy Tour
This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.
Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.
1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.
Take the 3/Green line one station to:
2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.
Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:
3. Novoslobodskaya. This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.
Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:
4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.
One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station, and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:
5. Baumanskaya. Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.
Stay on that train direction one more east to:
6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.
Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:
7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.
Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.
8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.
Keep going one more stop west to:
9. Slavyansky Bulvar. One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.
Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:
10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.
Jump back on the 3/Blue line in the same direction and take it one more stop:
11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )
Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
