The Ultimate Guide to Backpacking in Sydney (2024 Edition)

Picture of Gabby Boucher

  • Last Updated: January 13, 2024

From skydiving above some of world’s most beautiful beaches to having your very first surf lesson, here’s our ultimate guide for backpacking in Sydney.

Even though Sydney is definitively one of the most expensive cities in the world, it might come as a surprise to find that it’s also considered backpacker central for young travellers heading to Australia .

Sydney has some of the most acclaimed beaches in the country (Bondi Beach, anyone?) , incredible and unique architecture, a budding art scene, diverse history and culture, all coming together to make this place one of the best cities in the world.

There are countless reasons why backpacking in Sydney is so popular, and as soon as you visit you’ll start to see why everybody wants to head down under.

Backpacking In Sydney

One of the best reasons it’s so popular for young people is that you can apply for a Working Holiday Visa, meaning are able to fund all of your necessities and when you get bored with your part time job, you can easily find another one and travel to a different part of Australia.

Other reasons include the fact that there are accommodations suited specifically for backpacker’s needs and budget, that Sydney is a fast paced city and there are always tons of events you can attend for free, or you can always visit beaches and find underwater coves to explore!

Working Holiday Visas For Young Backpackers

Evisitor visa, electronic travel authority (eta), the visitor visa, public transport in sydney, new south wales, the new metro system, hanging out and surfing at bondi beach, hyde park barracks, australian museum, australian national maritime museum, do the bondi to coogee walk, take the ferry to manly, take a free guided walking tour, sydney harbour bridge climb, taronga zoo, catch a show inside the opera house, take a sunset cruise on the harbour, mad monkey coogee beach, nomads sydney, sydney harbour yha, cheap places to eat in sydney, hunter connection food court, visas needed to travel to australia.

There are a couple of different visas backpackers can get to visit Australia, depending on how long they want to stay and if they want to work or not.

Please do your research on visa requirements for citizens with your passport, as Australia is notoriously hard to get a visa for, depending on where you’re from.

Visit Australia’s Home Affairs website for more information on any visas.

This is the most popular visa among young backpackers, and for good reason.

Not only does this visa allows you to travel all over Australia and immerse yourself within the culture, it also gives you the chance to legally work and earn money as well!

It’s an ideal opportunity to experience their lifestyle, work on your English and earn some big money, as standard wages in Australia are known for being some of the highest in the world.

You need to be between 18 – 31 years of age and hold a passport from a list of approved countries. The visa lasts for 12 months, but if you do 3 months of agricultural work in that time, you can apply for a 12-month extension.

For normal tourists, the eVisitor visa is suitable for people who hold passports from some countries and want to visit for a holiday, seeing family or friends, recreation and for business purposes.

You will be able to enter as many times as you want – for up to three months at a time, for a whole year after the visa is granted.

Same as the eVisitor visa – you can visit as many times as you want for up to three months for twelve months after the visa is granted.

The visa is suitable if you’re traveling for pleasure (holiday or visiting family/friends) and/or business purposes.

The difference between ETA and eVisitor visa is that the eVisitor is for people who hold passports from EU countries and some other European countries, while the ETA is for passport holders from a small number of selected non-European countries, for example, the USA.

For the eVisitor visa you are not required to pay any fees but the ETA costs $20.

This visa allows you to travel to visit friends and family, for a holiday or business purposes. But if you’re applying for a Visitor visa you are not allowed to work/provide services to a business or organization in Australia.

The only difference between the Visitor, eVisitor and ETA visa is the application fee.

Loving The Sydney Harbour Views

Sydney’s public transport system is very well organized. Its transport system consists of network of trains, buses, light rail lines, airport links and ferry services.

Most likely you will be using all types of transport, and thankfully they made the ticketing system simple.

If you’re planning to travel all around Sydney the best and cheapest option is to buy an Opal card.  With an Opal card you can travel as much as you want by buses, trains or ferries, and many transport options won’t accept cash anymore.

Buy your Opal card from most convenience stores, supermarkets or news agencies.

Want an epic experience? Check out our article on how to spend one day in Sydney like a boss.

Buses travel throughout the city and they run almost 24 hours a day. Most of the routes within Sydney are prepaid to reduce delays, which means you need to get your ticket/Opal card before you get on board.

Sydney has a well-developed rail system. The train stations in central Sydney (which include Museum, St James, Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Martin Place, Kings Cross and Circular Quay) are easy to travel with and connect with other services going to northern, western or southern suburbs.

If you wish to travel to the eastern suburbs or to the famous Bondi Beach then catch a train leaving from Martin Place Station to Bondi Junction.

Trains run from 4am to around midnight on most train lines. Information kiosks are placed at Central and Circular Quay stations, and the ticket vending machines run 24/h.

The trains also offer easy transport into the city from Sydney Airport.

Australia’s biggest public transport project is the Sydney Metro. This new railway will have 31 metro stations and more than 66 kilometers of new metro rail, connecting all busy sections of Sydney.

While some services have already started around the CBD, the majority of services are scheduled to start in the first half of 2019. You won’t need a timetable when it’s finished – the trains will come and go every four minutes, even during peak hours.

Sydney’s world famous harbour is a major drawcard for backpackers and travellers heading to Australia, and the cool thing is you can check it out as part of the public transport network there.

Ferries leave from the main Circular Quay terminal and travel to a wide array of destinations, like Neutral Bay, Rose Bay, Kirribilli, Balmain, Taronga Zoo and Manly in the Northern Beaches.

You can find information kiosks at Manly and Circular Quay.

What To Do – Backpacking In Sydney On A Budget

Just because Sydney is one of the most expensive places in the world doesn’t mean you can’t find awesome things to do in Sydney on a budget! Grab one of your favourite coffee travel mugs , fill it with delicious caffeine and get ready to head out for some awesome activities!

Bondi is considered one of the world’s most famous stretches of fine sand and undulating waves.

The beach is a 30 minutes drive away from the city via bus or train from Town Hall Station, and offers tourists an insight into the easy-going beach culture Australia is famous for.

There are plenty of vibrant bars and cafes overlooking the beach, serving the classic ocean meal, fish and chips, and lots of awesome happy hour deals on.

If you’re a serious gourmet-lover, you won’t be disappointed here! Bondi Beach features many award-winning restaurants with amazing views.

Not hungry? No problem. Hanging out at Bondi Beach is definitely one of the best free activities for backpacking in Sydney, so take a towel and your swimmers and simply soak up the lifestyle.

And one of the favourite activities for travellers to Australia besides swimming is of course – surfing!

Board rental is charged at $15 an hour, with prices getting cheaper the longer you keep it. Not a pro yet? There are many accredited surf schools in the area, so even complete rookies can give surfing a shot.

The ideal day spent at Bondi is getting up early for a morning swim, then having breakfast at one of the many cafés on Campbell Parade.

There are public showers on the beach to wash off the salt after a swim in the ocean.

Check out our list of the other best Sydney beaches for inspiration on where else to visit.

Bondi Icebergs Pool

Visit The Museums

Sydney has an impressive museum culture, and you could spend days museum-hopping between all the awesome ones around.

Whether you’re into ancient anthropology, convict life, contemporary art or anything in between, you’re likely to find something of interest in town.

Most of the museums in Sydney have free entry, with only some of the exhibits requiring an admission fee.

These World Heritage barracks have gone through four incarnations during two centuries, and give a special insight into the everyday life of convicts.

Firstly the barracks were used for transporting convicts and female immigrants, and then housing the local courts before being turned into a museum.

Walk through the reconstructed living quarters to learn all about the grim life of colonial-era convicts transported from Ireland to a colony 17,000 km away.

Australia is famous for housing for some of the world’s deadliest wildlife, and in the Australian museum you get the chance to see many of them behind the safety of glass.

The museum is world renowned for its work in anthropology and natural history, especially documenting the achievements of Indigenous Australians (the longest surviving culture on Earth).

Australia has always depended on the seas and oceans for transportation, defense, commerce and recreation.

This museum dives into how Australia and its inhabitants (including indigenous cultures) have been affected by the water surrounding the island nation.

The Bondi to Coogee Walk is around 6km, taking about two hours to reach Coogee Beach and another 1.5 hours if you wish to continue to Maroubra.

Even though Bondi Beach is always crowded, it still is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and is definitively worth the visit to experience the beach culture along Campbell Parade and Hall Street.

The coastal walk features beaches, rock pools, cliffs, bays, parks and breathtaking coastal views.

You can do the walk in either direction, so for this point we’ll assume you are going to start at the Bondi Icebergs swimming club and restaurant.

Following the path, you will reach Tamarama. There you will be able to marvel at the two thousand year old traditional Aboriginal rock carvings at Mark’s Park.

In spring time, Sculptures by the Sea, the world’s largest annual sculpture exhibition, illuminates the Bondi to Tamarama section of the coastal walk.

You don’t even have to finish the whole walk. The most popular place to stop for a longer break is Bronte. Bronte has a heritage-listed natural sheltered rock pool called the Bogey Hole popular with families.

There are many opportunities to relax and have a coffee with some of the most gorgeous views in all of Sydney.

Behind the last headland lies Coogee, and nearby is Wedding Cake Island. This beach is a favourite with locals. You will be able to enjoy parkland for picnics and barbecues, natural rock pools and the calm surf.

Bondi To Coogee Walk Backpacking Sydney

One of the best things to do in Sydney on a budget is take the ferry to Manly, the beautiful beachside town on the north shore.

Unfortunately the ride only lasts for half an hour, but during the ride you will pass right by the Sydney Opera House for an up-close view.

The whole ferry ride has great views, and once you arrive at Manly Beach there are plenty of options to eat and drink. Take the short walk over to Shelly Beach and take a dip in the ocean pool, or look at doing the longer Manly to Spit Bridge walk.

You could also spend a few days in the northern beaches enjoying the nightlife, walking the coastal walks, and swimming or surfing. The northern beaches is a beautiful, non-tisty area of the city.

The ferry runs regularly all day, so it’s easy to pop on back to the city whenever you want. Definitely one of the incredible day trips from Sydney not to miss!

If you feel like you want to immerse yourself deeper into the Australian culture and lifestyle, we suggest opting for a tour with one of Sydney’s knowledgeable local tour guides.

There is no better way to learn about the city than listening to a local delve into history, share stories and culture, all to ensure you get the best out of your stay in Sydney.

Top 5 Things To Splash Out On In Sydney Australia

Now of course you can’t come to Sydney Australia and not do at least one awesome activity! It’s worth having a little extra in your travel budget for one of these epic things to do.

How does going up 15’000 feet in the air and jumping out of a perfectly good plane sound? If you’re an adrenaline addict then we probably have your attention now.

Just south of Sydney is Skydive Wollongong , home to the city’s best drop zone.

Whether you’re an experienced skydiver or first-timer, you will fall in love wth the ultimate thrill of free-falling at over 200 km/h for up to a whole minute!

After the intense free-fall, you will float under the canopy for the next 5-7 minutes, marvelling at the beautifully unreal views of the Sydney and Wollongong beaches.

Wollongong is the perfect South Coast getaway, conveniently located only half an hour away from Sydney. After completing your jump make sure to explore the city for the day or even stay the night.

You can enjoy its picturesque beaches, perfect for swimming or surfing. They also have a buzzing variety of different restaurants, bars and cafes.

Skydiving is on the expensive side but the aerial view of Sydney and the vastness of its beaches and the deep blue colour of its surrounding waters will be etched into your mind forever.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of Australia’s world-renowned symbols, opened in 1932, and has been become one of the top tourist attractions when you visit Sydney.

Spanning across Sydney’s breathtaking harbour, the Sydney Harbour Bridge has quickly become one of the most photographed features of the city center.

For those wanting the ultimate experience, Bridge Climb Sydney offers tours every 15 minutes to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the whole adventure takes about four hours to finish.

While on tour you will learn fun facts and lesser-known details about the bridge’s construction, maintenance, as well as interesting tidbits about the sights you see on the climb.

There are a couple of climbs on offer but we recommend the full climb, starting at sunset. This way you will be able to see Sydney transition from day into night.

Book your Bridge Climb experience here .

Climbing Harbour Bridge

Sydney’s astonishing zoo has been open for over 100 years.

The Taronga Zoo is divided into eight zoogeographic regions, and is home to over 4,000 animals of 350 species.

The Taronga Zoo is definitely worth a trip, if only for the view back to Sydney and the ferry ride.

When you arrive make sure to head to the gondolas for a scenic ride to the top of the ridge, where the entrance to the zoo is. The views are spectacular!

The zoo is well planned out, with good orientation meaning you won’t miss out on anything there.

And best of all, at the ‘Australian’ area you can have a Koala Encounter for an added fee! Now’s your chance to get up close to a koala and get a photo. You can not hold it or touch it due to the safety and comfort of the fury fellow. Book early as these experiences are popular.

Besides the koalas you can see most of Australia’s iconic species there, like kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats, emus, and cassowaries.

Get your Taronga Zoo tickets here.

Without a doubt the Opera House in Sydney is its most distinctive landmark, surpassing even the Harbour Bridge.

It is also the youngest cultural site to be included on the World Heritage List.

Depending on if your interest in the Opera House is purely driven by being intrigued by its architecture, or if you want to have an unforgettable experience at Sydney’s most iconic spot, you can do both!

If you’re interested in gaining a broad understanding of the background, design, politics, scandal, architectural competition or the construction process of this one-of-a-kind structure, you can always join their excellent one-hour tour.

Want to take it to the next level? Why not catch a show in the Opera House?

The acoustics of the Opera House bring world-renowned singers and musicians from around the world to perform inside, and the impressive interior will make your show an unforgettable experience.

At the end of your visit, to finish your day on a high note, go enjoy the food and drinks venues on the lower floor that overlooks the harbour – great food and beautiful views.

Sydney Opera House

Bring your sunblock as you ride the top deck of the boat and soak in the views of the Harbour, the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

It is the perfect way to become acquainted with the beautiful city and see most of the iconic landmarks in one go.

The round-trip cruises offer a great opportunity to orientate yourselves with all the sights along Sydney Harbour, including Taronga Zoo, Watson’s Bay, The Rocks and Darling Harbour.

Make sure your camera is fully charged as riding the entire Harbour takes about two hours or so, and that entire time will give you numerous fabulous photo opportunities.

The Best Backpacker Accommodation In Sydney

While accommodation in Sydney Australia is on the expensive side, there are a couple of great hostels that are helping keep your travel budget down around the city!

Check out these backpacker hostels in Sydney for great quality accommodation, cheap prices, fun atmosphere and good vibes!

The legendary Mad Monkey Hostels got their start in Cambodia, developing a reputation as being the best party backpackers in the country, while also having a huge focus on sustainability and responsible travel.

Since then they’ve spread to be all over Southeast Asia, and have now crossed the seas and opened up a new hostel in Sydney in 2018!

Mad Monkey Coogee Beach is already cultivating a network of loyal backpackers around them, and the word is spreading that in its short lifespan it is already the best backpacker hostel in Sydney.

It’s not downtown but rather on the coast, but in our opinion it’s better to stay out that way anyway, at least for a few days.

Every week they organise a party of some sort, and have a great travel desk to help you plan the rest of your time in Sydney and around the country, so if you’re traveling alone its an ideal opportunity to meet other travellers.

  • Book Here: The Mad Monkey Website
  • Address: 186 Arden Street, Coogee Beach, NSW, 2034

Nomads Sydney has been around a while, and now has hostels all over the country. They boast a new approach on budget style accommodation, high standards and innovative services.

They have a great location on Kent Street, walking distance to Circular Quay, and the bar downstairs called Scary Canary has great specials.

Like you would expect from a backpacker hostel, all their staff are well-travelled, and usually are backpackers themselves.

  • Book Here:  On Hostelworld
  • Address: 477 Kent St, Sydney NSW 2000
  • Phone: +61 (02) 9267 7718
  • Email: [email protected]

Wake Up is an ideal place for the working backpacker who wants to stay downtown, without losing that hostel vibe in their life.

They are directly opposite Central Station, so if you need to get out to any of the outer reaches of Sydney, it’s a great spot to be located.

They have a cool working area where you can plug in and work in peace. During the week you can join some of their daily activities, such as guided tours or pool competitions!

This is the only hostel for backpackers placed in the historic harbourside district of Sydney – the Rocks. And wow does it deliver the goods!

The Sydney Harbour YHA has an amazing rooftop area offering epic views of the harbour, Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge – a million dollar view on a backpackers’ budget!

  • Book Here: On YHA Site

Beaches Sydney Backpacking

To round out our ultimate guide to backpacking in Sydney Australia, we want to tell you where you can go and get a bite to eat without breaking your budget.

By far the cheapest way to eat in Sydney is to self-cater, buying your groceries from a supermarket and cooking in your hostel, but if you want to try something exotic and delicious check out these two places.

The Chinatown neighbourhood is a very popular choice in Sydney for eating out. Not many places in Sydney offer astonishingly affordable meals that don’t skimp on flavour, but you’ll find lots here.

Walking through the lane-ways of Chinatown can be an intimidating experience for first time visitors.

The mixture of neon lights, crowds of people and foreign scrawl can be a bit overwhelming, but we promise you it’s worth it.

The Hunter Connection is cheap, and most of the time it’s like an enclosed street market, with food stand owners trying to lure you over with their special offers.

In terms of quality it’s average, but it does have a couple of food stands that are surprisingly good. Just look for the crowds of business people in suits lining up outside the best ones.

The Hunter Connection Food Court is full during weekdays around lunch time as it’s very popular among locals.

It has a great variety of Asian cuisines, including Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Indian. All at great prices. It’s a little noisy and crowded at lunchtime, but other than that, what’s not to love?

That’s it for our guide on backpacking Sydney Australia. Is there anything we’ve left out? Leave a comment below and let us know!

Backpacker tours in Australia

A popular option with both domestic and international travellers, a backpacker tour gives individuals the chance to travel light and cheaply at the same time as taking in some of the best backpacker tours which the country has to offer. There are an enormous variety of travel tours out there for adventurous people who want to make memories. Accessible on a limited budget, we take a look at some of the opportunities out there to make your Australian backpacking trip one to remember.

The East Coast Tour is an absolute must!

When it comes to adventure tours, travelling some or all of Australia’s east coast is an essential! Traditionally the trip spans the coast from Melbourne right up to Cairns (although travellers can start at either end of the coast, or travel smaller sections). The route passes through three states: Victoria, New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland.

Discover Victoria

Although traditionally the East Coast tour commenced at Sydney, a growing number of people are choosing to begin their adventure in Melbourne. Possibly one of the coolest cities on the planet, Melbourne has a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe which is almost irresistible. From the iconic Flinders station, through to the free street tram, numerous parks and intriguing architecture, Melbourne makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. It also benefits from an enormous number of restaurants, bars and clubs, where there are plenty of employment opportunities if you’re looking to supplement your travels with some additional cash. Close to the Wilson’s Promontory National Park, it’s also near Phillip Island (if you love penguins this has to be on your bucket list) and the Yarra Valley, well-known for its impressive vineyards and superior wines.

Move northwards to Fraser Island

The classic backpacking route for East Coast devotees is along Highway 1, which circumnavigates the entire country. Brisbane and the Gold Coast offer numerous opportunities for adventure tours and travel tours. If you’re near Brisbane, why not consider an expedition into the rainforest, or a driving tour in the local area? North of Brisbane, lying off the coast, is Fraser Island. The largest sand island on the planet, it’s the only sand island which also hosts a rain forest! Listed as a World Heritage Site, a tour of Fraser Island provides the opportunity to experience a unique, stunning natural environment.

Consider a tour of the Whitsundays

Located adjacent to the Conway National Park the Whitsundays are the perfect spot to enjoy anything from a snorkelling tour through to some turtle spotting. The Whitsundays are a popular location for day trippers and diving enthusiasts, as well as a haven for wildlife. If you’re visiting Whitsundays, a trip to Whitehaven beach is essential – as famous as Bondi, Whitehaven’s stunning fusion of white sand and blue ocean makes it an idyllic option. Many people choose to fly over Heart Reef, a tiny island which is, indeed, almost perfectly heart-shaped. If sailing is your passion, the Whitsundays are a great location to enjoy as part of a mini-cruise or a day on the water. From the Whitsundays, many people continue northwards towards Cairns and the chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling tours around the Great Barrier Reef

The largest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a location of exceptional ecological importance as well as one of the most beautiful places on earth. A snorkelling tour is the perfect opportunity to explore this exquisite underwater landscape. Brightly coloured fish dart among the coral, creating a stunning seascape that’s absolutely unmissable. With more than 900 islands and 2900 reefs, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-visit destination. If snorkelling isn’t your thing, why not view the coral through one of the glass-bottomed boats which offer regular tours?

Travel inland to Alice Springs, or take an Uluru tour

Although the East Coast has an enormous range of sights and experiences on offer, no backpacking trip in Australia would be complete without a journey to the interior. A popular tourist destination, Alice Springs (NT) is located within driving distance of the legendary Uluru (Ayres Rock), an impressive sandstone monolith which is of enormous cultural importance to the indigenous Australian people. Uluru tours allow visitors not only to visit the rock itself, but also to take in some of the arid scenery which forms much of inland Australia as well as trips to Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. Alice Springs has plenty of attractions, including a Desert Park, reptile centre and some intriguing museums. A camping tour of these iconic locations is a great opportunity to get closer to the amazing plants and animals in the area.

Variety of backpacker tours available

The traditional image of a backpacker is that of an individual who mainly walks or uses public transport to reach their next destination. Contemporary backpackers often prefer a more diverse range of options when it comes to getting the most from their travelling. Adventure tours or travel tours are a good way of seeing more of what Australia has to offer, as well as giving access to unique experiences such as bush camping, snorkelling, sailing, off-road driving, outback tours and more. These can either be completed as trips in their own right, or as an add-on to a longer trip along the East Coast route.

An organised adventure tour can have many benefits

A package adventure tour provides the opportunity to enjoy many of the country’s most stunning areas in relative comfort. Frequently a tour includes specialist equipment and vehicles, enabling you to take part without needing to buy additional kit. Because you will be accompanied by an experienced guide, it’s possible to visit more remote and potentially dangerous locations safely. Guides also tend to have an in-depth knowledge of the local area, enabling you to find out more and get a much deeper insight into the location during your visit. If you want to get the most from your time backpacking, adding a suitable tour to your itinerary can be of real benefit.

Backpacking Sydney Travel Guide 2024

Recognized as Australia’s most famous city  and  the largest city in Oceania, Sydney is an effortless blend of beach culture and urban life. This metropolitan is the gateway for nearly all visitors in Australia, making it a backpacker’s paradise.

Sydney is home to world-renowned landmarks like the  Opera House  and the  Sydney Harbour Bridge , as well as some of the most gorgeous and famed beaches on the planet.

Culturally diverse, Sydney welcomes people from all walks of life. With a young but rich history, Sydney pays homage to its indigenous people through museums, educational walks, and cultural events.

Anything goes in Sydney, as long as people are happy, healthy, and having fun. Life is truly uncomplicated here. Backpacking  Sydney  will give you an incredible taste for life down under.

Vibrant and spirited, Sydneysiders are quick to identify their city as the party capital of Australia. There is never a shortage of festivals, pubs, clubs, live music venues, or parties to attend.

Open your mind, expand your horizons, and have a blast while backpacking Sydney.

How Much Does Backpacking Sydney Cost?

beach waves

Getting here—flying into an isolated country—will be your biggest expense. My recommendation is to sort out visas and flights before you begin to budget your trip.

Sydney, or backpacking Australia in general, can be affordable if you truly travel like a budget backpacker. Allocate your money to the activities you deem most important during your stay. Use our backpacking Sydney travel guide to save wherever you can, like food and accommodation.

Realistically, I would budget at least a minimum of $50 a day to comfortably experience Sydney. You can get by on less, but it’ll be a crusty trip to Sydney, while extra cash is going to have you living it up a lot more.

A Daily Budget in Sydney

The following is a breakdown of items to consider for you Sydney daily budget:

Sydney Budget Backpacking Tips

Bronte, Sydney

Backpacking Sydney is not cheap—let’s get that out of the way! That’s not to say that you need to break the bank to enjoy the city. The following are a few tips to note before you head to Sydney to stay on a backpacker budget.

  • Food:  For those non-foodie, budget backpacker through-and-through types, hit-up Australian supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, and cook up a storm. Asian grocery stores (Chinese, Indian, Korean, etc.) are usually even cheaper. Markets around the city will also have fresh seafood and produce at reasonable prices. Check out Chinatown for cheap eats, and ask around the neighborhood for inexpensive local restaurants.
  • Drink: There is no shortage of backpacker bars in Sydney. Be on the lookout for backpacker specials at the many hostels. As always, in true Australian fashion: drink goon, save money. Note: Australian tap water is fine to drink, and you can find water fountains everywhere. Take a travel water bottle to refill and save on water purchases. (Always stay hydrated!)
  • Transportation: Get an Opal Card. It is easy—you will need it! Taxis are expensive in Sydney, and rideshare is a better means of getting around. (Use UberPool to share your ride with other travelers for an even cheaper fare.)
  • Free Activities: Luckily, Sydney is loaded with things to do for free! Swim at the beach, admire a coastal sunrise, check out local art at the free museums, stroll along Sydney’s coastal walks, join a free walking tour of the city, hike in the Blue Mountains, or browse the many markets and festivals. It is easy to experience Sydney on a backpacker budget.
  • Budget-friendly Tours:  If you do happen to go on any guided tours, at least make it a tour where you can pay it off in instalments.  Global Work and Travel  have the broke backpacker in mind with this one. You can even choose the amount per instalment! There are loads of tour options to tickle your fancy that include Sydney.
  • Other Backpacker Tips:  Internet is expensive in the land down under. Luckily, McDonald’s (Maccas) always has free WiFi.

Stores close early and sometimes do not open on Sundays. Unbelievably, all shops close at 5 or 6. Thursday is late-night shopping, so expect stores to be open until 9. This seems strange for such a massive city, but it is true, so plan ahead for certain necessities.

BridgeClimb Sydney is a cool attraction if you have the money. However, you can get a view of the Sydney Harbour by simply walking across the bridge for free!

Why You Should Travel to Sydney with a Water Bottle

Plastic washes up on even the most pristine beaches… so do your part and keep the Big Blue beautiful

You aren’t going to save the world overnight, but you might as well be part of the solution and not the problem. When you travel to some of the world’s most remote places, you come to realise the full extent of the plastic problem. And I hope you become more inspired to continue being a responsible traveller .

Plus, now you won’t be buying overpriced bottles of water from the supermarkets either! Travel with a filtered water bottle instead and never waste a cent nor a turtle’s life again.

grayl geopress filter bottle

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

I’ve broken down 5 of the best areas to stay in Sydney . The following are a select few neighborhoods in Sydney that you could rest your head for the night.

  • Surry Hills: A hip neighborhood and home to many great places to eat and drink. Surry Hills has great public transportation connections.
  • Darlinghurst: Darlinghurst is the heart of Sydney’s gay scene, and home to popular Oxford Street.
  • Kings Cross: Essentially Sydney’s Red Light District, Kings Cross has bars lining its streets. Often called “backpacker central” and home to some of Sydney’s cheapest hostels , Kings Cross comes alive after dark with some of the best nightlife in the city.
  • Bondi: Arguably one of Sydney’s hottest suburbs, Bondi has everything you need for a truly Australian experience. Home to stunning beaches, great coffee, trendy shopping, vibrant nightlife, active people, and the popular Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk.
  • Manly:  One of Sydney locals most favored beaches, Manly has a cool community feel. A lovely 30-minute ferry ride from the city, with incredible views of the Sydney Opera House, is reason enough to make the trip over to Manly.

Sydney is a popular tourist destination, so, naturally, there are many fantastic backpacker hostels scattered throughout the city.

1. Chill at the Sydney Opera House

Arguably one of the most iconic places to visit in Sydney , the Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts center. Located in the harbor of Circular Quay, you can catch the train directly from Sydney Airport.

No visit to Australia would be complete without an Instagram photo of this amazing piece of architecture, right!? Keep yourself updated on any events you may like to see inside, and be sure to head down to the Opera Bar for a lovely sunset drink on the water.

Sydney Opera House

2. Discover Sydney Harbour Bridge

Another beautiful place in Australia is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Take a ride over the steel structure and catch views of stunning Sydney.

You can legally climb the southern half of the bridge with Sydney Bridge Climb, however, it is free to walk or bike across. The more frugal option allthe ows opportunity to take-in the glorious harbor, and snap some panoramic shots of the Opera House.

If you are lucky enough to be in Sydney for New Year’s Eve, you do not want to miss the firework show that forms an explosive backdrop of the Harbour Bridge.

For a truly memorable experience, you can even charter your own yacht to take you around Sydney Harbour. With six to eight friends, this experience doesn’t have to break the bank, but it sure will be a memorable day.

Harbour Bridge

3. Spend the Day at Bondi Beach

Sure, I could lump all beaches together as a must-do activity, but with Australia’s endless coastline, I need to be a bit more specific. Bondi Beach is especially relevant, as it is one of the most visited tourist sites in Australia.

Bondi is a white-sand, crescent-shaped beach with reliable waves for surfers, and a great spot to hire a surf lesson. Swim or skate around Bondi, grab lunch at a local cafe, or take a dip at the notable  Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club ; there is plenty to do here that make it one step above the rest.

A quick train ride from the city to Bondi Junction , and you can easily catch a bus, Uber, or taxi down to the beachfront.

Had enough of the beach? Sydney has its selection of water parks too!

Bondi Beach

4. Stroll along the Many Coastal Walks

Do not miss an opportunity for a stroll along the popular Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk . This coastal walk stretches from the cliffs of Bondi to Coogee with dramatic scenery and incredible ocean views along the way.

The beaches on the coastal route are well maintained and pristine. Be sure to take a dip in one of the rock pools on your route.

Other incredible coastal walks include the Hermitage Foreshore Track and the  Spit Bridge to Manly Walk . See the “Best Walks in Sydney” section below for more information!

5. Ride the Ferry to Manly Beach

Circular Quay is the location of Sydney’s main ferry terminal. You do not want to miss the 30-minute ferry ride over to Manly. Manly Ferry is a must-do for visitors; it provides a great angle and perspective of the harbor, Opera House, and Harbour Bridge.

Situated among the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Manly itself is one of the locals’ most favored beaches. Manly exudes Aussie surf vibes and it has a lovely promenade, wide beach, many restaurants, shops, and a happening nightlife.

Manly, Sydney

6. Unearth the Rocks

Essentially, t he Rocks is the birthplace of modern Sydney, as it was here that British settlers first landed. The historic precinct has quite a colorful past.

Unfold the story of The Rock’s evolution, from cobbled laneways full of rowdy sailors, soldiers, convicts, and gangs, into the modern precinct it is today. Amble the foreshore, drink at Australia’s oldest pubs, browse the popular markets, enjoy the myriad of cafes, join the Rocks Walking Tour to take a step back in time, and visit the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia .

7. Mosey around the Royal Botanic Garden

Opened in 1816, the enchanting Royal Botanic Garden sits on the edge of Sydney Harbour, and it is the oldest scientific institution in Australia. The garden is sprawling with thousands of plant specimens, birds, and even cute fruit bats.

Soak up the sun on the garden lawn, as access into the garden is completely free.

Join the Aboriginal Heritage Tour to gain knowledge of the Cadigal people. Tours are guided by Aboriginals, themselves. Learn about the diverse history of the original owners of Sydney. Uncover the gardens by exploring plant uses and try bush food.

Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair —an exposed sandstone cutout of rock in the shape of a bench—is also cool to check out. The chair was hand carved by convicts in 1810, and it makes a nice lookout point to gaze at the harbor.

8. Familiarize Yourself with Unique Animals at Taronga Zoo

A 12-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay, Taronga Zoo  is a not-for-profit organization that supports wildlife conservation.

Taronga Zoo provides another place to score excellent views of Sydney Harbour, but the real treat is the chance to see native wildlife, as well as, exotic animals.

Highlights include animal feedings, encounters, and the nocturnal platypus habitat. Who wouldn’t love spending the day among the ‘roos?

Taronga Zoo

9. Visit Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour  is just adjacent to the city center and easily accessible by public transportation; it is home to many of Sydney’s attractions and museums.

Paddy’s Market, Aboriginal Centre, the casino, the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium, Wild Life Sydney Zoo, Australian National Maritime Museum, and many other public facilities have roots here. You will find this large pedestrian precinct in the heart of Sydney, neighboring Chinatown, King Street Wharf, and Cockle Bay.

Darling Harbour is often host to large-scale events, so see what is going on during your visit to Sydney.

10. Wander the City

Discover Sydney by simply  wandering the city —it’s free! Many of the museums offer free admission, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales . Meander the old-time buildings that are open to the public, including the Queen Victoria Building .

Explore the city’s many parks and gardens, like Hyde Park . Uncover interesting suburbs around the city, for instance  Kings Cross . Do not pass-up a stroll around Luna Park;  it may be worth a few bucks to hop-on one of the amusement park’s fun rides.

Admittedly, 3-day itinerary for Sydney is not nearly enough time if you want to see it  all . Hey—that just comes to show that Sydney is bustling full of the things that make a city great!

Obviously, if you are limited on time, you should try to adjust this itinerary to match your personal travel goals. What one backpacker in Sydney deems important may completely differ to another.

I have done my best to break down 3 days in Sydney that maximize the amount of sights you can see in this huge city. This itinerary also works great for a weekend in Sydney.

Need help deciding between Sydney or Melbourne ? Check out our helpful guide.

Day 1 in Sydney

How many hours did you just spend sitting on an airplane? You need to get up and walk around for the day!

Dive right into the good stuff, and head straight to Circular Quay. It is here that you can marvel at the Sydney Opera House in all of its glory. Sip on your very first Australian cocktail at Opera Bar, and grab a seat on the water to take in the views of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney   Harbour Bridge .

Continue onward to The Rocks . Here, you can grab a bite at one of Sydney’s oldest pubs. Walk around the historic neighborhood and browse the open-air markets, before making your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art .

Finally, catch the ferry to Manly Beach . Kick back and enjoy the ride as Sydney’s most iconic landmarks pass you by. Upon arrival to Manly, you can have a stroll around the promenade, and soak-up the sun at the beach. Watch surfers as they catch waves at this popular surf spot.

End your amazing day with a sunset dinner on the water. If you have not had enough fun yet, pop over to Darling Harbour for a night cap… or 3.

Sydney

Day 2 in Sydney

Refreshed and revitalized from your day in the Australian sun, you are all set to conquer day 2 in Sydney at Bondi Beach . Grab the train from the city to Bondi Junction. From this point, hop on a bus and ride down to the beachfront.

Spend your morning swimming in the sea or wading in the natural rock pools. Watch skaters shred at the park, snap some photos of the local street art, or checkout the hip streets for shopping. Get a feel for the funky beach lifestyle at Bondi.

Bondi is known for its waves, so definitely book yourself a surf lesson . If you have not learned yet, Australia is the place to do it! If surfing isn’t your thing, head over to Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club to hang in the pool, have a cocktail, and dine on the balcony overlooking the ocean.

Begin your journey of the eastern beaches with the coastal walk that stretches along the cliffs to Coogee . There are breathtaking views on this route. Watch the waves crash on the cliffs, spot sea life, and stop at all of the divine beaches on the way.

When you finally arrive to Coogee, cool down with a drink at the Coogee Pavilion .

Bondi has endless options for food and drink, so I recommend having dinner at a local restaurant before making your way back into the city. Feeling frisky? There is a happening nightlife in Bondi as well, so go get some drinks with the cuties you met on the beach!

Bondi Beach

Day 3 in Sydney

Since 3 days in Sydney is not a lot of time, dedicate day 3 in Sydney towards things that pique your own interest.

Take the day to hike the Blue Mountains if you enjoy nature and rugged landscapes. Stay overnight in one of the Blue Mountain hostels and explore the region a bit more. It offers some stunning nature and amazing hikes. You’ll also find plenty of yoga retreats in this area.

For those backpackers that enjoy eating and drinking around the world, discover one of Australia’s most prominent wine regions.

Cruise the ferry to Watson’s Bay for more beach time. Appreciate the astonishing views of the city from one of Sydney’s iconic walking tracks that you can catch at the bay.

Visit the animals at Taronga Zoo , Wild Life Sydney Zoo , or  Sea Life Aquarium.

Looking for free things to do in Sydney? Make time in your day to enjoy the Royal Botanic Garden . Have a picnic under the trees while staring out into the harbor. Wander down the famous Oxford Street , gawk at the beautiful Queen Victoria Building (QVB), and stroll around Hyde Park .

Go out with a bang and get wild at the many backpacker bars in Sydney like  Kings Cross . For Sydney on the cheap: drink goon (wine) until you pass out. Don’t worry, you can blow-up the wine bag to make sure you have a nice pillow to rest your head for the night!

Sydney

Day Trips from Sydney

You came all the way to Sydney, so why not wander a little more? If you have more time to spare while backpacking Sydney, then the following are a few day trip recommendations. These may require some planning to get to, as they are not centrally located.

  • Blue Mountains National Park:  One of the best-known Australian national parks and a vast region west of Sydney and part of the Great Dividing Range, the Blue Mountains area makes for a great day trip away from city life. Hire a car or use a tour company that offers transportation to the mountains as it will take about 2 hours to reach. Visit the well-known landmarks like the Three Sisters and Lincoln’s Rock. Explore waterfalls, snap epic photos of the mountains and valleys, and have a BBQ—yum!
  • Hunter Valley: About 2 hours drive north of Sydney is the Hunter Valley wine region. Visit some of its 120 wineries where you can sample wine and cheeses. It is possible to rent a bike and tour the region, especially if you are a backpacker who enjoys the finer things in life—on a finer budget! You can also bushwalk through the Yengo National Park to visit Aboriginal cultural heritage sites.
  • Cockatoo Island —  A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, Cockatoo Island is an old convict precinct. Located smack dab in the middle of Sydney Harbour, this is a key cultural site for the city. Discover the island’s history as it evolved from a prison, to a reformatory school, into a major shipyard. Cockatoo Island also hosts many events, so you should keep track of what’s going on during your stay in Sydney

Best Walks in Sydney

Sydneysiders have a wealth of choices when it comes to walking tracks. Here are some top picks to explore the city by foot when backpacking Sydney:

Best Walks in Sydney

The following is a breakdown of the basics and everything you need to know before your Sydney trip. Whether you are a first-time backpacker or experienced in the art of travel, it is always nice to have a reference of useful information.

Best Time of Year to Visit Sydney

The Australian continent is in the Southern Hemisphere, so it celebrates its summer from December to March and winter from June to September. New South Wales, the state where Sydney resides, is located in a subtropical zone with hot summers and cool winters.

While there is no wrong time to visit Sydney, there are few things to take note of before you plan your dream backpacking trip in Australia.

Peak season is from Christmas until the end of January. This time coincides with school holidays, hot temperatures, and higher rates on flights and accommodation. However, it is also the time-frame to experience the longest days, Christmas on the beach, one of the greatest New Year’s Eve firework shows on the planet, popular festivals in Sydney , and Australia Day!

Alternatively, a Sydney spring is usually dry and warm; offering pleasant temperatures, smaller crowds, and days full of abundant sunshine.

Best Time of Year to Visit Sydney

Getting In and Out of Sydney

Getting In and Out of Sydney

Sydney’s major transportation hub for international and domestic travel,  Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport , is located approximately 9 km (6 miles) south of the city center. Due to Australia’s geographic location in Oceania, it is likely that you will arrive to the country via airplane.

There are a number of ways to get to-and-from the airport such as car, taxi, rideshare, train, shuttle, rental car, bus, or bike.

Airport Link offers fast and convenient train services that run approximately every 10-minutes. For a mere 13-minute ride to the city, you will need to purchase an Opal Card —Sydney’s ‘tap-on, tap-off’ travel system—before riding.

Especially important to note: the only visitors that do not require a visa prior to arrival in Sydney are Australians and New Zealanders. For information on Australia’s entry requirements, please visit my Backpacking East Coast Australia Travel Guide .

When you’re ready to travel to Sydney, forgo buying tickets at the station and book them online instead! You can now book transport in advance for most of Asia using 12Go and doing so can really save you some stress (and maybe money, too).

While we love flying, driving is another amazing way to travel around Australia. A road trip from Sydney to Melbourne will take around a week (depending on how fast or slow you want to take it), and will provide you with some unbelievable views.

How to Get Around Sydney

While not necessarily the most convenient, Sydney’s public transport system is more than competent and covers the entire Greater Sydney Region. Getting around areas in the CBD and central areas is easy-peasy and everywhere else is reachable – just expect a few different connections.

You need to buy an  Opal Card   (Sydney’s cashless transit card) before catching any transport. Not only will it net you a discount, but increasingly tickets are also being phased out making an Opal Card a necessity for getting around Sydney. An Opal Card can be purchased or topped up at train stations, news agencies, corner stores, and other retailers.

With an Opal Card in hand, backpacking around Sydney is a breeze:

Sydney has an extensive  rail network  within the city that also covers regional areas. The main hub is  Central Station , which most lines pass through.

Trams (Light Rail)  run between select locations within the city too (with expansions to the network coming soon), and you’ll even find Sydney’s first  Metro Line  in the northwestern suburbs with extended lines also being developed.

Sydney also has an extensive  bus network . Buses are in operation from around 5 am to midnight. Use your Opal Card to tap on-and-off.

Enjoy your travels in Sydney by taking a  ferry . Explore the waterways from around 6 am to midnight. The most popular service is the Manly Ferry, which you can board at the Sydney Harbour.

Driving  within the city center can be time-consuming and expensive to park. However,  car rental  can be handy for accessing Sydney’s outer reaches for day trips.

Taxis  are readily avilable in Sydney, however, they’re EXPENSIVE.  Uber ,  ride-sharing , and  bicycle rental/bike-share  are all popular means of transportation in Sydney.

Australians are laid-back, easy-going, no-stress kind of people. That means public transportation may not be the most reliable. Give yourself plenty of time to get to where you are going, and be prepared to walk a bit.

Australia

Long-Distance Trains from Sydney

The  Indian Pacific is an Australian passenger rail service that connects Sydney with Perth (on the west coast). This is considered to be one of the few truly transcontinental trains in the world and probably the coolest way to travel to Perth .

Safety in Sydney

Australia is a safe country with a low crime rate.

Maintain safety in Sydney by packing sun-protective gear for Australia – sunscreen, hats, sunnies, and light clothing – while going out into the Ozzie sun. The sun’s rays are dangerous being ever-so-close to the equator. Drink water and always carry fluids on you. A sure-fire way to destroy your trip is by ending up in the hospital with dehydration symptoms. australia

Swim between the flags on the beach. Oftentimes, shark nets are used on popular beaches for protection. Ocean rescue can easily see you when you are with the crowd if any trouble were to arise.

In addition, no matter how advances you may feel you are at swimming, the sea is a mystical place, so do not think you are stronger than any current. The flags are there for good reason.

Never swim at night in the sea. I was once told, in reference to the crocodile riddled waters of the north, “if you do not see an Australian swimming, you should not get in,” and that can be a good rule of thumb to follow.

Although it may not be common, there is the risk of being bitten by a snake or spider as well as being stung by a jellyfish. Always tell someone the areas you are exploring and try to find a buddy to join if you are headed into the bush.

Extra Travel Tips for Staying Safe in Sydney

  • Pick yourself up a backpacker security belt to keep your cash safe on the road.

  • I strongly recommend travelling with a headlamp whilst in Sydney (or anywhere really – every backpacker should have a good head torch!) – check out Will’s post for a breakdown of the best value headlamps to take backpacking.

Travel Insurance for Sydney

Traveling without insurance would be risky so do consider getting good backpacker insurance sorted before you head off on an adventure.

I have been using World Nomads for some time now and made a few claims over the years. They’re easy to use, professional and relatively affordable. They may also let you buy or extend a policy once you’ve started your trip and are already abroad which is super handy.

If there’s one insurance company I trust, it’s World Nomads.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Sydney Accommodation Travel Hacks

Accommodation could put a dent in your wallet while backpacking Sydney. A great way to alleviate that expense is to  work for your hostel room . Many hostels will allow you to work in exchange for a bed. Although this may only be an option if you plan to stay for over a week.

If you’re only visiting for a few days and want to maximise your time and budget, you should think about planning out your Sydney itinerary before you travel.

You could also try:

  • Airbnbs are great if you are traveling with several friends to cut costs.
  • Traveling by Couchsurfing , as always, is amazing if you’re on tight travel budget in Sydney. There are many awesome hosts in town! An added bonus: your local couchsurfing host will likely show you around town and give you insider tips.
  • Caravan parks and campgrounds are definitely a money-saving option near Sydney for those of you touring Australia in a camper van. If you’re looking to hire a camper, check out JUCY Rentals – they are my go-to for EPIC vans at a reasonable price.
  • Networking  can go a long way as well. It is very possible that you have made friends while traveling elsewhere that live in your destination city. Call on a buddy for a place to crash for a few nights.
  • Urban camping is easy given Sydney’s multitude of parks, nature reserves, and random patches of greenery (just be sneaky – it’s not exactly “legal”). To kick it properly Sydney-hobo style, string up your backpacking hammock in Sydney Park … It’s a damn fine park too!

  • Half a World Away in Australia: Travelling in a Land Down Under   – Discover the land down under from someone who has dedicated his life to it. The English born author fell in love with Australia, moved there, and has been discovering and writing about it ever since. This is one of the best books set in Australia, full of fascinating stories, written in a down-to-earth style, and sure to be a hit for anyone intrigued by the land down under.
  • Kings Cross: A Biography – A fascinating account of the history of Kings Cross, one of Australia’s most infamous and misunderstood places.
  • Harp In The South – This Australian classic portrays the life of the Darcy family living in the once slum suburb of Sydney–Surry Hills.
  • Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence  – A book about Australia’s history and its treatment of the Aboriginal peoples. A sad but fascinating read to gain a little insight about Australia’s history.

In Sydney, you can find any cuisine you desire. Restaurants provide an extensive array of local and international food as a result of multiculturalism.

Sydney boasts high-quality seafood attributable to clean ocean environments and bountiful access to water.

Australia has a long developed coffee culture; therefore, Sydneysiders can enjoy a brekky cafe around every corner. Try avo (avocado) on toast. Native fruit is always a great snack or breakfast idea.

For cheap and tasty food, be sure to check-out Sydney’s Chinatown.

Surry Hills has one of the highest concentrations of restaurants within Sydney, priding itself on a diverse range of choices.

If you would like to eat like a local, your diet is going to consist heavily upon meat. Common meals include meat pies, fish and chips, roast dinners, lamb, and Australian bush food.

Have a barbecue anywhere you desire in Sydney, as local council offer barbecues for use by the general public, and your hostel or Airbnb will likely do the same. Drink a few stubbies (beer) and complete your burger with slices of beetroot—it’s the Australian way!

For an authentic Australian experience be sure to try: Kangaroo, Emu, Vegemite, Tim Tams, and Lamingtons. Also, Indomie Instant Migoreng Noodles are the staple of Ozzie uni student’s diet – cheap and tasty!

Eating and Drinking in Sydney

Wine in Sydney

Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of wine and it is produced in every single state. The major varietals of wine in Australia are Shiraz (Syrah to much of the world), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Semillon, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.

New South Wales, in particular, has several wine regions to be discovered. Quite a few of these wine regions fall within driving distance from Sydney, such as Hunter Valley —Australia’s oldest wine growing region—  Mudgee, Southern Highlands, and Orange .

While many may enjoy the finer things in life, even on a budget, the majority of Sydney visitors will stick to  Goon —boxed wine—an Australian staple for backpackers.

Nightlife in Sydney

In an effort to reduce alcohol-fueled violence, the Government of New South Wales introduced Sydney’s infamous lockout laws. While originally totalitarian in nature and near-completely destroying Sydney’s nightlife, things have since relaxed with the laws now only applying to the notorious King’s Cross district. Here you won’t be allowed into a venue after 1.30 A.M. and last drinks are called at 3 A.M.

Nightlife is often concentrated around Kings Cross where you can find many strip joints and sex shops as well as plenty of clubs. However, there are a lot better places in Sydney to get loose.

Australian pubs or ‘hotels’ are popular among students and backpackers. Find some awesome pubs at The Rocks , Coogee , or Bondi .

Oxford Street has gained a reputation as Sydney’s nightclub strip, and the Darlinghurst end of the street has become known as the center of Sydney’s gay community. Every March, Oxford Street hosts the parade for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival.

Newtown and the Inner West region also emits awesome party vibes. Here you’re likely to find the best parties in Sydney (that don’t take place beneath the stars to the gentle whispers of heavy psytrance). You’ll also find a good underground scene here: raves, warehouse parties, garage breweries, and no shortage of lovable weirdos.

Sydney is home to some of the best festivals in Australia , and are not to be missed if you’re looking for a good time.

Being a Responsible Backpacker in Sydney

Backpacking in Sydney will bring you ample opportunities to participate in debauchery, and it is very important to have fun, let loose, and get a bit wild at times. Most backpacking trips I have been on across the world have included at least a few mornings where I wake up knowing I went too far.

There are some things that will put you in the category of a straight-up jackass if you do them. Being super loud and obnoxious in a tiny hostel at 3 A.M. is a classic rookie backpacker mistake.

Everyone in the hostel will hate you when you wake them up. Show your fellow travelers respect whilst backpacking in Sydney and anywhere else for that matter!

Check out our post on how to be a responsible backpacker.

ABOUT AUSTRALIA

Australia is an Amazing Place Worth a Visit Once in a Lifetime.

Why? Australia is one of the most remote countries on this planet, where it's all about natural wonders, stunning beaches, amazing landscape, cosmopolitan metropolises, and plenty of exciting activities. Travellers are also able to enjoy some of the world’s best food and wine It not only matches every taste, budget, age, or interest, but it also delivers some unique experiences almost impossible to find somewhere else.

Safety & Security

According to the Australian consumer research, the Down Under continent is consistently rated as one of the world’s safest holiday destinations. With a stable political system, combined with its relatively low crime rate, patrolled beaches, well maintained roads, and high standard of health care. Australia is a safe and easy country to explore. What’s more, Australians are well-known for their friendly and welcoming attitude.

Attractions

Australia is home to a large number of interesting attractions, both natural and man-made. It’s possible to visit the world-famous icons such as the Sydney Opera House, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. Travellers can also get up close to Australia’s unique wildlife in National Parks, sanctuaries and aquariums. Australia is home to a large number of UNESCO World Heritage sites and its cities are filled with fascinating museums, art galleries and theatres.

Value for Money

Great Weather

THERE’S NEVER A BAD TIME TO EXPLORE Australia! Australia is famous for its blue skies and sunshine. The weather is generally temperate and pleasant throughout the year. Even Australia’s winter (June-August- is quite mild- the average winter temperature in Sydney is 16°c/60°F. This coincides with the beautiful dry season in Australia’s tropical north.

Tourism Adventure Group (TAG) is known for creating extraordinary travel experiences for youth travellers visiting Australia and New Zealand. With multiple brands across all aspects of adventure travel

TAG is one of the fastest growing youth tourism companies in the World. TAG owns both the Nomads & Base Youth Hotel brands and operates 10 properties across Australia & New Zealand.

TAG has a focus on extending the youth offering to include extraordinary entertainment and tours as a part of the overall customer experience. The portfolio of 8 licensed venues, live music events and adventure tours, are a part of the social fabric that contributes the youth traveller experience.

We are Nomads. A bunch of people who started travelling and didn’t give it up. In the process of working with amazing staff, agents, travel operators, property owners and other business partners we have been able to create an incredible network of tourism offers.

The current day Nomads started in  2003 when Daniel Bunning, young property developer from Perth, took ownership of half of the company and was joined in 2005 by long term Nomads General Manager, and proud Mt Isa boy, Michael Ebert who took on the other half of the company. In 2019 lifelong backpacker Tom Cooney joined the partnership and in 2020 partner in the Nomads Noosa business, Dean Walsh, joined the ownership structure of the collection of companies. The four retain ownership of the group today.

Since 2005, Nomads has grown massively buying hotel leases, adventure tourism, and retail travel business to become Australia and New Zealand's fastest growing and exciting youth accommodation providers. Nomads acquired the 14 property Base Backpackers brand, United, All Nations and boutique Byron Bay getaway, the Garden Burees as additions to its core accommodation portfolio. Under Dan, Michael, Tom and Dean's guidance the company has grown into the adventure travel space owning and operating the K'gari Safaris and Island Expedition businesses,  Mojo Surf and Snow business (which operates in Sydney, Coffs Harbour, Bali and Portugal) . In 2016 Nomads consolidated its businesses under the Tourism Adventure Group (TAG) umbrella and added a partnership with Australia and New Zealand's largest youth focused travel agency, Happy Travels and formed a key partnership with the longest running Work & Holiday program operator Work & Travel Company.

Like all good Nomads the journey is never over, and the 4 stooges are constantly seeking the next addition to this unique tourism platform.

The Experience

Base, nomads & united hostels .

Tourism Adventure Group owns and operates 10 backpackers across Australia and New Zealand.

While our network has grown considerably in size since the acquisition of Base Backpackers in 2015, and then shrunk as a result of the pandemic, our philosophy has never changed and that is to create extraordinary travel experiences for our customers.

Our diverse portfolio of properties means we are able to offer our customers the experience of a life time, the way they want to enjoy it. This way of thinking lead us to ensure our product offering could cater to differing travel styles and for the individualised personalities of the traveller.

While the Nomads Hostels brand has evolved to attract those who want to discover different. The brand essence is a feeling of positive vibes in a chilled out atmosphere, where you stay to alert your senses, dive deep into local-culture and define your experience at your own pace.

Travellers chose the way they want to travel by fluidly moving between all of our hostels as they create their own story of travel.

No matter what property or product you choose all share a common goal to deliver extraordinary experiences.

8 Licensed Venue's

Our venues are as varied as our customer, from CBD nightclubs, to boutique speakeasy’s, beachside cocktail bars and fine casual eateries. Each one of our licensed venues contributes greatly to its partnered accommodation, offering discounts to our in house guests and always ensuring there’s great product and friendly service available.

Each venue offers an entertainment calendar carefully curated to match the expectations of our accommodation guests, and continuous evaluation in our food, drink and entertainment products ensure that all our guests see our F&B offering as valuable addition to their hostel and backpacking experience.

In addition to our licensed venues like award winning Scary Canary, and backpacker institution Down Under Bar, TAG has also curated a number of award winning boutique festivals. Full Moon Down Under & Island Life beach festivals both hosted on spectacular Magnetic Island, in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Heritage Area provides an unparalleled opportunity to party in paradise, and newly awarded Spring Break Australia, the only Spring Break event of its kind in Australia targeting an international student market, to celebrate in the Airlie Beach and the surround Whitsundays.

ISLAND EXPEDITIONS , K'GARI SAFARIS  & MOJO ADVENTURE TOURS

Tourism Adventure Group expanded their product offering to include must-see and do adventure tour experiences.

K'gari Safaris tours as the name suggests is a 2 or 3 night tour of the Heritage listed K'gari (Fraser Island). Here customers explore the Island on a tag-a-long 4WD tour, where they get to drive along the white sandy coastline, discover Lake MacKenzie and see firsthand the Islands very own ship wreck.

Island Expeditions is for the adventurer looking for a slightly more rustic experience on K'gari, where each night of the tour customers will stay in a dedicated beach side camp, falling asleep to waves and waking up to the sun.

Mojo Surf represents the heart and soul of Aussie surf culture, now in its 26th year of operation the Mojo team continue to push new boundaries teaching customers how to respect the ocean and stand up on a surf board.

Mojo surf caters for all levels of surfing and has surf camps in some of the World best surf regions, including the iconic Sydney to Byron Bay surf adventure, a 3 month surf academy at a private surf camp Spot X near Coffs Harbour.

The brand expanded its product offering to include destination surf camps in Bali and the Mentawai Islands, as well as running seasonal product in Portugal.

There are numerous backpacker jobs in Sydney for those travellers who need to make some money before travelling onward on their journeys. Whether you are looking for full-time, part-time or casual jobs in Sydney , this great city has it all. Sydney has a powerful image as the largest city in the whole country, and this means that travellers can easily find work in one of the cultural centres around the city and surrounding suburbs. Many backpackers try to find work around the Sydney Harbour, but it is recommended better to look for temporary employment around some of the natural sites in Sydney. There are also numerous service industry jobs.

Jobs in Sydney

Jobs in Sydney

Every year, tens of thousands of young people from all over the world land on our sunny shores to commence their working holidays, many drawn to the earning potential and job prospects in the Harbour City. A job is essential to maintain themselves for the duration of their working holiday visa - between long, lazy days on the city's stunning beaches and nights out in the vibrant metropolis. So which jobs are ideal for backpackers in Sydney?

Job opportunities for backpackers in Sydney

Sydney is a backpacker's paradise - with the job market stable and many positions available that are perfectly suited to those making their way for the first time in Australia. Bar or hospitality work is the most common choice - with the city's extensive range of pubs, cafes and restaurants often staffed by fun foreigners making a buck. Many bars will hire on the spot and there are usually plenty of varying positions available. It's also a great way to meet people in your new city. If you have the gift of the gab, sales and call centre work is generally aimed at recruiting short-term workers - many of whom are visitors to Australia and prefer an office environment. In the same vein, office admin jobs are numerous and usually offer more stability than hospitality or sales roles. For those with the right credentials and experience back home, au pair or nanny jobs offer a decent wage, as well as usually also giving you a room (and some meals) included. You never know - you could land a job with a great family who will take you on their travels to care for their children! Sydney is a great city to fly into and an even better city to stick around and make your way in the Aussie workforce.

Explore Sydney

Most Popular Suburbs of Sydney

Australia's most famous city is the perfect destination for a backpacking adventure. It's vibrant, it's beautiful and it's incredibly diverse - from the harbour to the beaches and the Kings Cross party lifestyle. So what are the suburbs you simply can't miss as a backpacker? Here are just a few of the most popular areas of Sydney for backpackers:

Manly Manly is the Sydney beach Mecca, whether you want to swim, sunbathe or surf. For a quieter spot, try Shelly Beach. Newtown After a day of surfing, Newtown and the bohemian King Street are great destinations for the evening. Live music is in the air as young people soak up the busy atmosphere. Alternatively, another great nightlife suburb is Surry Hills. Balmain If heritage charm and a great choice of pubs and beers is more your thing, head to Balmain and grab a harbour view while you're there. Make sure to check out The London Hotel for a beer with a famous bridge view. Glebe If this list was a bit older, Glebe might not be on it - but urban decay has given way to lovely parks and cool cafes, great restaurants, shopping and local markets. Randwick Flemington might be where the famous Melbourne Cup takes place, but Randwick is just perfect for a day of dressing up at the races, including the Epsom Handicap or the Australian Oaks. Cronulla Famous internationally due to the 2005 riot, "The Shire" is still a great place to catch some waves and a coffee at a trendy cafe. Paddington Trendy and upmarket Paddington is the Sydney destination for fashion outlets, boutiques, art galleries and the popular Oxford Street market on a Saturday. Parramatta Distinctly historic and once not very popular among backpackers, Parramatta is now a trendy destination thanks to some new, cool restaurants. Summer Hill Also a historic Sydney destination, backpackers love Summer Hill for the many op-shop choices.

This is just a mere selection of the great places Sydney backpackers will love, so dive into your exploration of Australia's most famous and diverse city!
