ART Tour in Knokke-Heist: proeven van kunst aan de kust

Het oog wil ook wat en dat heeft Knokke-Heist maar al te goed begrepen. De hele kustgemeente ademt een passie voor schoonheid, zowel in het straatbeeld, als op je bord en in de talrijke kunstgalerieën. Dé ideale manier om ook jouw ogen hier eens goed de kost te geven? Dat is ongetwijfeld de ART Tour, een unieke rondleiding met een elektrische citymobiel die je langs de mooiste en (niet onbelangrijk) lekkerste stops voert.

Ik geniet van een geweldig uitzicht op de Wuivende Krabben van Panamarenko en word verwend met een heerlijk fris glas rosé, verfijnde vitello tonnato en smakelijk kopje gazpacho

Door de al verrassend warme ochtendzon en uitgelaten sfeer die in de zeelucht hangt waan ik me spontaan in vakantiemodus op een doodgewone donderdag. Al brengt een bezoek aan het mooie Knokke-Heist dat altijd wel een beetje teweeg. Aan het Lichttorenplein, velen beter bekend als het ‘roze plein’, staat de 100% elektrische citymobiel die mij doorheen de badstad moet voeren – en niet moet onderdoen voor de typische luxegolfkar à la Knokke-Heist – al paraat.

Al na de eerste bocht richting zeedijk wordt duidelijk dat onze gids niet enkel een passie voor Knokke-Heist koestert, maar ook voor kunst en cultuur in het algemeen. Vol enthousiasme vertelt hij over kunst in de publieke ruimte, opvallend en verscholen, en over de pleinen van de badplaats die het resultaat zijn van een geslaagde symbiose tussen kunst en architectuur , tussen verleden en heden. Dat kunstwerken niet alleen mooi kunnen zijn, maar ook zinvol, zoals de kleurrijke Kameleon van Jeremy Deller op het Van Bunnenplein, wiens rode tong alle kinderen eindeloos glijbaanplezier bezorgt.

Onze eerste echte stop van deze ART Tour vindt plaats bij het iconische luxehotel La Réserve Resort , recht tegenover het Casino, waar ik op de imposante oprijlaan al meteen gegroet wordt door twee opvallende kunstwerken en in de inkomhal door een ontvangstcomité van vijf sculpturen. De echte verrassing wacht echter buiten op het prachtige terras van het hotel, vanwaar ik een geweldig uitzicht geniet op de Wuivende Krabben van Panamarenko en verwend word met een heerlijk fris glas rosé, verfijnde vitello tonnato en smakelijk kopje gazpacho.

Opnieuw in de citymobiel zoeven we geruisloos verder langs bekende en verborgen stukjes Knokke-Heist. Zo ook doorheen het charmante Oud-Knokke, zoals de bewoners het hier kennen, richting het Atelier van Luc Peire in De Judestraat. Hoewel de naam ‘atelier’ de bezoekerservaring hier misschien niet helemaal recht aandoet. Als beeldend kunstenaar evolueerde Luc Peire van het expressionisme naar een voorstelling van de mens als spiritueel wezen, met een bijzondere focus op de verticale beweging en de uitgebalanceerde ruimte. Ook een bezoek aan de kleine maar fijne tentoonstelling, tuin en bungalow in Knokke-Heist is vandaag een haast spirituele beleving, met als hoogtepunt ongetwijfeld de optical art spiegelkamer waar ik even lijk te zweven in een oneindige ruimte.

De route naar onze volgende culinaire stop doorkruist de residentiële wijken van Het Zoute, die met hun statige villa’s en groene, mondaine karakter eigenlijk ook weer een deeltje van de schoonheid van Knokke-Heist vormen. Onze gids licht ondertussen in geuren en kleuren toe wat hier ooit was, is, en ooit nog komen zal. Na Het Zoute volgt het zoete bij Hotel St. Pol , dat niet alleen zijn gezellig terras een artistieke make-over heeft gegeven, maar ons ook verwent met maar liefst drie lekkernijen bij de koffie: een cherrybomb met kersenchibouste, chocolademousse en compote van vijgen, een citroensorbet met paradijskorrel, en (ben je anders wel echt in Knokke-Heist geweest?) een oerklassieke maar overheerlijke Misérable.

Onze laatste halte vooraleer we terugkeren naar het Lichttorenplein is de Dominicanenkerk . En waar ik de pittoreske wit-rode kerktoren al tallozen keren ben voorbijgelopen op zomerse zeedagen, nam ik tot nu toe – tot mijn spijt – nog nooit de tijd om ook het interieur ervan te bewonderen. Nu ik dat wel doe, bevind ik me plots in een heuse oase van rust in hartje Knokke-Heist. Zowel het binnenpleintje als de kerk zelf zijn betoverend in hun eenvoud en sereniteit. Een mooi moment van bezinning, en van nog een laatste zoete verwennerij met artisanale pralines van chocolatier Van Neuten om deze schone ART Tour – in elke betekenis van het woord – af te sluiten.

• De ART Tour vindt van 16 juni tot 3 september 2022 elke donderdag, vrijdag en zaterdag plaats. In de nazomer volgen nog drie extra zaterdagen: 17 en 24 september, en 1 oktober.
• De tour start telkens stipt om 11 uur aan het bureau van Toerisme op het Lichttorenplein te Knokke-Heist en duurt ongeveer drie uur.
• Kostprijs: €45 per persoon, inclusief alle hapjes en drankjes. Ook groepstours zijn mogelijk op aanvraag.

• Closer by Wim Tellier (04/04/2022-04/09/2022): een bijzondere canvasafdruk van een man in een brandwerend pak dat geperforeerd werd om er zonnebloemen door te laten groeien. De uitkijktoren naast het kunstwerk biedt een extra mooi uitzicht. Kalvekeetdijk 258
• Helmut Newton – Legacy (10/06/2022-25/09/2022): een unieke wandeling van de fifties naar de nineties, doorheen vijf decennia verrassende, soms provocatieve maar altijd krachtige foto’s van de wereldberoemde pionier Helmut Newton. Vol glamour, nooit oppervlakkig: dat is zijn bijzondere stijl en verbeelding die niemand ooit kon – of zal kunnen – imiteren. Knokke-Heist is de enige tussenstop van deze buitengewone expo in de Benelux, met ook nooit eerder getoond werk van deze topfotograaf. Ravelingen, Koudekerkelaan 33
• Zeezucht – Poëziewandeling van Maud Vanhauwaert : woordkunstenares Maud Vanhauwaert droomt weg bij de kunstbeelden in Knokke-Heist. Ze schreef vijf gedichten op maat, vol zeezucht. Project ‘Zeezucht’  nodigt uit tot een poëtische wandeling, langs unieke kunstwerken, op een zucht van de zee. Een hartverwarmende wandeltip.
• Art galeries : Knokke-Heist telt maar liefst 85 kunstgalerijen, verspreid over de hele gemeente en met voor elke kunstliefhebber wat wils. Een handig overzicht vind je hier .

Knokke Art Fair

Replacing the long-running Art Noctune Knocke since 20, Knokke Art Fair is a fully independent art fair independent showcasing modern and contemporary art. The quality of the artworks exhibited is guarantee by a competent vetting taking place before the opening of the fair. Visitors can see a purchase a broad selection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, design furniture, among others. Knokke Art Fair takes place in the Grand Casino Knokke, one of the crown jewels of the Belgian coast and a showpiece of the upmarket beach resort. The Grand Casino is strategically located right in front of the sea.

Alexander tuteleers, what would you say is the dna of knokke art fair.

The Knokke Art Fair is the only art fair taking place in an artwork, and unique on the calendar at the beginning of August since almost 50 year.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

International galleries in Modern Art, Design and Contemporary art so give an international overview of the current market to local collectors.

What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?

In the contemporary section art works start at €2.000, in the Modern section prices ranges go up to €4 million. The average buyers spend around €30-50k however we have specific initiatives for both young and experienced collectors.

Who is the typical attendee of Knokke Art Fair?

Most visitors are Belgian, however we also welcome art lovers from The Netherlands, Luxembourg and the region of Aachen-Cologne-Bonn.

What strategy – physical as digital – will you adopt in medium to long term?

Although its almost 50 year tradition, the fair is more actual than ever. Visitors can check out discovered works in their interior though AI and the visitors experience is a true full serviced experienced making it a pleasant day.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

Pinta Miami because it shows interesting works from Latin America and PAD London because it shows unique classic pieces for a timeless interior.

Van een gedresseerd bord in een toprestaurant naar een stijlvol aangeklede etalage van een bekend modelabel tot een glas bubbels in één van de kunstgaleries, in Knokke-Heist krijg je steeds een combinatie van kwaliteit, een passie voor schoonheid en volop genieten.

Een enthousiaste gids neemt je mee op een stille en duurzame ontdekkingstocht doorheen onze mooie gemeente in een unieke elektrische citymobiel. Tijdens de ART Tour kom je oog in oog te staan met hedendaagse kunst gecombineerd met enkele culinaire stops.

Knokke Art Fair 2022 will once again be a triumphant and impressive display of visual art in a unique setting, offering sublime quality and surprising diversity. Thanks to the unprecedented display of private Flemish art collections, the 2022 event manages to surpass even the striking exhibition held in 2021.

The extremely varied and sensational ensemble of visual techniques and disciplines – from both high-achieving artists and young talent on the threshold of recognition – is accompanied this year by a unique spectacle giving a stunning view of exquisite private Flemish collections, presented with discretion and discernment. 

There is every indication that this edition will be of interest to both the general public and connoisseurs.

This exhibition takes place in a unique setting: the Grand Casino Knokke, a cultural temple that was built by the well-known architect Léon Steynen in the 1930s. Joseph Nellens and later Gustave Nellens , together with his sons Jacques and Roger, turned it into an internationally esteemed and much-visited place where an astonishing number of celebrities in the field of music and theatre gave memorable performances. 

Besides, art exhibitions have attracted international attention every year, thanks to the talent and fame of the artists: Pablo Picasso, Raoul Dufy, Salvador Dali, Bernard Buffet, Félix Labisse, Marc Chagall, René Magritte, and Balthus. Joan Miro exhibited alongside the then younger Panamarenko, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Paul Delvaux …

The Knokke Art Fair 2022 is currently taking place in the Grand Casino Knokke’s famous Magritte Room, where sculptor Jan de Cock shone last year. This year, leading works from private Flemish art collections are on display under the appropriate title  HIGHLIGHTS.be.

Let us briefly give you an overview of what is being shown in that legendary Casino in the context of KNAF 2022.

Sculpture Link  – where Barry Flanagan leads the dance – lures the visitor into the Casino via the Zeedijk. Flanagan ‘s spectacular and monumental hares are presented by London’s Waddington Custot Gallery , where smaller works by the artist are also on display in the Casino. The gallery presents work by important contemporary and, in particular, modern artists. In addition to Flanagan, we find Peter Blake, Jan Davenport, Bernar Venet, and Robert Indiana, as well as iconic modern European artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages , and Joan Miro , Josef Albers, and Antoni Tapiès.

The famous Swiss Galerie  Von Vertes  from Zurich is also present. It displays an impressive number of modern as well as contemporary artists. These include Georg Baselitz, Paul Klee, George Condo, Tony Cragg, Lucio Fontana, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Bernar Venet, Maurice de Vlaminck, Otto Piene, Serge Poliakoff and many others. Online, the gallery recently presented ‘Poetic Transformations’ by Borcow and ‘Americans in Paris.’ Of course, this gallery also takes part in major art fairs such as Tefaf, Art Cologne, Brafa, Masterpiece, La Biennale de Paris, and … Knokke Art Fair 2022.

In the  contemporary art department , which looks just as impressive, we would like to highlight the Parisian Galerie Dix9 , among others. Hélène Lacharmoise wants to promote and display works of art and artists of today from all over the world and compare French artists with others who are not yet well known in France or here. She has slender, eloquent flower arrangements by Niyaz Najafov. She will be joined at KNAF 2022 by many other internationally renowned galleries, making this department an extremely diverse ensemble, including as it does a colorful walk in a wonderful garden.

The Italian gallery   Deodato Arte  has a branch in Brussels, and its owner was originally a collector, as is often the case. In addition to modern work, the gallery presents outspoken contemporary artists who are making waves, such as  Banksy, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Kaws, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring , and  Takashi Murakami . Names that ring clear and make you dream.

The Dutch gallery Art Chemistry  is best known for its interest in South African art.

The Knokse Gate Gallery specializes in ‘Post War & Contemporary Art’ and refers to Gloria Gallery, which has participated in KNAF before. She shows work by Robert Combas and Aboudia . 

Gallery Ysebaert , which supplied the much-admired Nicolas Lavarenne for Sculpture Link last year, will be present once again with Ronald Westerhuis with his landscapes and abstract sculptures, in addition to  Nicolas Lavarenne .

Surprising Asian art is presented by the German Red Zone Arts Gallery, while the Dutch Atelier Art Society promotes artists that it accommodates in the new Art Style Future Art. As was the case last year, Goodwin Gallery presents attractive work by Volker Kühn that both amazes and amuses you. Finally, Galeria K . The name refers to Galerie Kaschenbach , which was founded in Trier in 1950. Grandson Daniel Marx shows work by Axel Grieger, Tony Cragg, Lorenzo Quinn, and Günter Uecker.

Our tradition also includes a surprising design department, with many dozens of special pieces on display. They include items designed by great names such as Gaetano Pesce, Eileen Gray, Gae Aulenti, and Pierre Paulin . The brand’s De Sede, B & B Italia, Cassina, Artemide , and Vitra are present thanks to the support of Pot & Berden . There is also work done by two Belgian designers, Olivier De Schrijver and Christl Dekimpe , and the overseas designer Hom Le Xuan .

Another important department of the Knokke Art Fair is the one that has been given the name On Stage and which will both surprise and provoke a number of aha! Experiences. Young artists are literally placed on Stage. This event will be an ensemble of discoveries, moments of recognition, and appreciation and form a breeding ground for the future.

On Stage has thirteen artists who, helped on their way with this pat on the back, are sufficiently talented to embark on the road to fame and recognition. The diversity on display is, once again, impressive, and the originality is a breath of fresh air. There are many daring attempts at innovation, and these are striking: hard paintings and the spatial work of Els Thienpondt, alias Tex; the eloquent use of color by Ursula Schregel; the cleverly structured paintings of Frank Proot ; the poetic and sensitive abstraction and suggestive figuration of Ghislaine Bosteels ; the graceful and formally daring sculptures of people and animals by Jos Dirix; the classical and aesthetic-looking sculptures that depict women and girls somewhat idyllically by Halil Faïk; the masks by Sarah Van Der Borght and the inspired ceramics created by Brigitte Rotsaert.

The Knokke Art Fair 2022 has a magnificent, unusual surprise: a breathtaking view of selected works from ten private West Flemish art collections. These are singularly iconic and carefully chosen pieces of art, some of which, by the way, consciously or unconsciously, refer to what is being shown in the current Venice Biennale. These admirable pieces have been brought together under the eloquent title:  HIGHLIGHTS.be.

This is an edition of the Knokke Art Fair that honors the proud tradition of quality, originality, and diversity.

Highlights: flashes from a magic chamber

Putting together the HIGHLIGHTS.be exhibition is considered as something which is almost impossible to realize: offering a view of just one carefully selected artwork from a series of prominent Flemish art collections.

Collectors of what can be described as language-made visuals are justifiably proud of their collection, but they are also very concerned about the well-being of their pieces and the masterpieces in particular. 

Nevertheless, Alexander Tuteleers has managed to honor his function as a curator in a rather spectacular way by selecting a single work each from ten collections that he describes as ‘iconic’. That is indeed a  tour de force , but at the same time, a voyage of discovery in which the collectors’ passion and their associated masterpieces are on show, making for a journey that is undertaken together with the curator.

It is a sublime work of art in itself to bring together ten pieces of art, a considerable number of which are being featured at the same time in the current edition of the Venice Biennale. That may be regarded as something special, not to say unique. 

The ten pieces of art typically incarnate a movement, a revolution, that has conceived and shaped a different view of what can be described as visual language. The artists’ names alone provoke emotion, interest, and curiosity in both the connoisseur and the viewer interested in contemporary art.

Those truly iconic artists include Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger, Helmut Newton, Zhang Xiaogang, Marcel Duchamp, Elmgreen-Dragset, and Giuseppe Penone.

The initiative is part of the Knokke Art Fair 2022, which puts high-level modern and contemporary art and design on display, and turns the limelight onto young artists in a section that bears the appropriate title of ‘On Stage’.

Knokke, Belgium: This Small Seaside Resort Is An Art Lover's Paradise

Travelling to the coast usually means beach, sun and fun. The Belgium seaside resort Knokke offers all of that, and more. With over 85 art galleries scattered across town, several dozens of artworks in public spaces (some are in the sea!) and interesting local museums, Knokke is a true art lover’s paradise.

Knokke is also where the Belgian rich and famous come to relax and the coastal town is cheekily referred to as the Saint-Tropez or Monaco of the north by the rest of the country. You can expect to see lots of expensive cars, bling-bling and designer clothes as you stroll across Knokke boulevard. On the tourism section of the Knokke municipality website, you can find an overview of almost all the art galleries in Knokke. Some of our favourites include Retsin, where Belgian pop artist Gilbert Retsin displays his own work. Unfortunately, he is only open on weekends, but you can always call ahead and make an appointment.

Another must-visit is Bogert Gallery , which focuses on mostly abstract paintings by both known and up-and-coming artists. Occasionally, there are so-called Kunstbabbels, guided tours through the gallery where artists explain their work. For archeological and ethnographic artefacts and textiles, you should go to Galerie Bart Wille and for beautiful beach photography, you’ll want to stop by Jones Gallery , where Tom D. Jones displays his amazing shots of not only Knokke Beach but of Mother Nature’s finest places all over the world. If you want to have your own picture taken when you’re in Knokke, you can book an appointment with Tom’s wife Sylvia, who specialises in portrait photography.

If you want to check out some works by world-famous artists, Winwood Gallery is the place to be, with artworks by Francis Bacon, Robert Mapplethorpe and David Hockney on display, among many others. You also don’t want to miss Galerie 713 , which explores and highlights a different art movement every two months.

Three times a year, Knokke becomes extra arty with the festival, Art Knokke-Heist. Always held over a weekend, Art Knokke-Heist is on during the Easter holidays (end of March, early April) and both the first weekend of summer (the end of June) and the first weekend of autumn (late October). During Art Knokke-Heist, most art galleries have special events and vernissages and draw bigger crowds than usual.

Art in Knokke is not only on display in galleries, there are also many public artworks to be found on street corners, squares, the beach and some, even in the sea! If you’re on the beach, try and find The Sea, That Amazing Sculptor by Jean-Michel Folon, which is a sculpture of a man sitting in the sea. Folon was inspired by the Belgian surreal artist Magritte. It is located roughly across from the Ralph Lauren store on Zeedijk 748.

Hard to miss are the Two Large AVL Men , standing in the middle of the Abraham Hansplein roundabout. Created by Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout, this large duo of bright orange greeting men have become a beacon for the town. Another crowd favourite in Knokke’s public space is Hospitality by Welsh sculptor Barry Flanagan. You can find this ‘flying’ rabbit in the dunes at the end of Zeedijk in the nature reserve, Het Zwin.

All of this art exploring can make you hungry and thirsty. Luckily, with five Michelin star restaurants, Knokke is the most famous gastropole on the Belgian coast. Cuines 33 currently has one Michelin star and is run by two brothers (both chefs) and their sister. The interior was designed by Belgian top interior designer Lieven Musschoot and gives the place an eclectic feel, with a hint of a 1950s atmosphere. Make sure to try the tapas menu. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, Alexandra is a good option, serving mostly French cuisine and seafood. The homemade North Sea shrimp croquettes are recommended.

For something a little more exotic, Orchidee Thai serves the best Asian food in town. Take away is an option, so if the weather is nice, you can order your food to go and opt for a picnic on the beach. For snacks and lunch, head over to Septime’s Jazz Café, where you can enjoy your coffee while listening to some relaxing tunes and checking out the black and white photography on the wall. For the best coffee and tea in Knokke, you should head over to Brazila, where you can pick your favourite coffee flavour from the menu, which is then freshly ground while you wait. If you’re not well-versed in the variety of coffee flavours on offer, staff are more than happy to help you pick your poison.

If you want to stay in Knokke overnight so you can have another day to explore this lovely town, there are plenty of accommodation options. All the big hotel chains are represented here and those looking for a more traditional experience can spend the night in a typical country-style cottage. If you’re eager to stick with the art theme, Bea B&B is located on a quiet street just outside the city centre and is entirely decorated with design furniture. If you’d rather invest your money in art, rather than spend it on accommodation, the cheapest option to stay overnight is most likely the Sleep Inn Lakeside Paradise, the only hostel in town, located on the beach front.

15 Best Things to Do in Knokke (Belgium)

Knokke is a town within the municipality of Knokke-Heist. The town itself is fairly small but accounts for 16,000 of the municipality’s 30,000 residents. The destination is not the most popular in Belgium but it certainly appeals to the middle-class in the country and proves a popular spot for those with holiday homes due to its many beaches and decent nightlife. If you explore the area around Knokke, you will see that there are many mansions dotted around the neighbouring towns.

As far as tourism goes, the main attraction of Knokke is the beach and the nightlife but there are also a few worthwhile museums and art galleries and, if you have money to spend, there are a number of swanky and unusual shops to spend money in. As always in Belgium eating out is always an option and the Knokke-Heist area has plenty of good eating establishments.

If you are planning to pass through Knokke and Knokke-Heist on a trip of Belgium, then my advice would be to allow for a couple of days only. This will allow you to enjoy the beach on one day and a couple of museums on the other. Don’t forget to visit the casino and either see some entertainment or gamble a few euros away. If you are in the area for longer, try to have a guided tour of the casino in order to see its hidden treasures and take a boat trip to see some seals.

Lets explore the best things to do in Knokke :

1. Visit the For Freedom Museum

This fascinating museum in the Knokke-Heist area shows how tough life was during the Second World War in an accurate and realistic way.

The museum is often included on battlefield tours in the area and many people would say that it is a tour highlight.

The various dioramas, exhibits and artefacts show life in this region between 1940 and 1945. The museum is open daily in the summer and at weekends during November and December.

Entry costs 8 Euros for an adult.

2. See Knokke’s Nature Reserve

The Zwin Nature Park amusingly but accurately describes itself as the international bird airport due to the incredible amount and variety of migrating birds that pass through here on their journeys around the world.

The park has recently had a new visitor’s centre which explains more about the birds and their migratory routes in various entertaining displays.

There are also observatory decks and a walking trail to allow you to get up close and personal to all the birds.

3. Be a high-roller in the Grand Casino

Knokke’s Grand Casino is far more grand on the inside than from outside.

On the outside the building is a fairly unassuming concrete structure with some neon lights for effect.

Inside however the experience is more like you would expect in Las Vegas including slot machines, live tables and even live entertainment on certain days of the week including magicians and musicians.

Entry is to anyone over 21. The highlights of the casino, its 72 meter wide mural and the impressive glass chandelier are not visible to the public, so if you want so see these (and you certainly should) ask at the tourist office for details of tours.

4. Learn about the ways of the past in Knokke-Heist

The daily lives of the fisherman in Knokke-Heist were tough and at the Sincfala Museum you can learn all about them.

The museum actually covers the history of the region for the past 2000 years, providing the most in depth and interesting look at life in the region available.

Entry to the museum is 3.50 Euros and it is every day of the year apart from Christmas and New Year.

5. Hire a bike from Zoute Cycles

Zoute Cycles offers the absolute optimal starting point for a cycling trip in the Knokke area.

Instead of driving into the centre of the town, paying for parking and then starting your journey, simply drive to Zoute Cycles, park for free and hire your bikes there.

Zoute is also a great starting point for your ride whether you want to explore the countryside or the coastline.

6. Take a boat trip

What better thing to do when by the sea than to take a boat trip? You will find plenty of companies offering tours from Knokke (like: knokke boat) and these prove for a great day out, especially in the summer months.

The best tours are those offering a chance to see the local seals .

These tours usually begin with a speedy trip out to see, reaching speeds of around 65kmph, before slowing down and allowing the seals to emerge from the water and approach the boat.

7. Visit the five beaches

The region of Knokke-Heist has five beaches, all of which are easily accessible from the town of Knokke.

The five beaches each possess very different characteristics and you will no doubt have a favourite after visiting all five.

Walk from Knokke to Heist and experience the different beaches; some sporty, some stylish and others more family oriented.

If you feel like walking is too much effort, why not try one of the many horseback tours of the beaches for a unique experience.

8. Visit the Art Nocturne Knokke gallery

Art Nocturne Knokke is growing in reputation around Europe and for good reason.

The collection here is varied and interesting and covers a wide range of themes and styles including contemporary art and design.

Admission to the gallery is not cheap and anyone over 18 will have to pay 15 Euros, under 18s are free.

9. Chill at Surfer’s Paradise

The Surfer’s Paradise bar has an ideal location beachside and is one of the best places to drink and snack in Knokke.

Don’t expect gourmet food but do expect decent music, great views of the beach, comfy seats and casual dining.

If you are on the beach and looking for a nice cold drink near the sea with a bite to eat; look no further than surfer’s paradise.

Surfer’s Paradise also offer surfing lessons if you feel the need to improve your surfing skills.

10. Listen to some sweet jazz music

The Septime Jazz Bar in Knokke is earning quite a reputation for its classy and entertaining nightlife.

The bar serves a small amount of food, good beer and cocktails and hosts live jazz music every Saturday night.

The interior of the bar is simply decorated and quite small but the atmosphere on a Saturday night is great with top class jazz music and many people dancing.

11. Ride in the Sea Lounge

The Sea Lounge is a boat trip that is very different from the seal watching boat tours also available in Knokke.

The Sea Lounge is a luxury catamaran available for hire and tours.

The catamaran can be hired privately or used for bachelor parties or photo shoots.

If you fancy a boat trip with a more luxurious feel than the seal watching boats; this is the best option for you.

12. Visit the Crea Bloemen Flower Shop

Even if you do not intend to buy any flowers or ceramics, this shop is worth visiting.

The Crea Bloemen shop has been situated in Knokke for more than two decades now and specialises in creating beautiful homeware and flowers.

The shop looks as good as any art gallery you may visit and is certainly worth exploring during your time in Knokke.

13. Take a green tour of the coast

For those who don’t want to cause pollution by driving around the coast but haven’t got the legs for cycling; Park and Drive Electric makes perfect sense.

You can hire an electric golf caddy style vehicle and tour the coast and town alike.

The benefits of these little vehicles are; they are open-sided allowing for great visibility, they are free to run (apart from the hire cost) and, if you hire one for more than a day, they will provide you with a new battery each day to keep you on the move.

14. Get active at the Chalet Suisse

The premiere leisure centre in Knokke, the Chalet Suisse offers many different sports in one place.

Tennis, miniature golf, bowls and archery are all available here as well as food via the restaurant which can cater for 50 people.

The restaurant serves basic food such as grilled meats and mussels but if you are hungry after a game of tennis, it is just right.

15. See a flying hare

Walk around the dunes near the Zwin in Knokke and you may well be lucky enough to see the sculpture of a flying hare.

The massive hare, which has been sculpted mid-leap, is made entirely from Bronze and was sculpted by British artist Barry Flannigan.

The sculpture is called “Hospitality” and the hare itself is said to represent fertility, power and freedom.

Knokke-Heist: The perfect place for a stylish and arty get away

Not only is Knokke-Heist the Belgian coast’s top art location, its diverse attractions – from outdoor fun and shopping to excellent food and drink – make it an ideal weekend and overnight destination. From simple and authentic fare to gastronomic dining, don’t miss out on an opportunity to taste the sea and other examples of excellent local produce.

An all-year-round attraction is the Zwin Nature Park , lying near the Dutch border. Accessible by bike, foot or by car, the reserve is a paradise for many species of birds. Boasting fresh water and sea water areas, it’s an opportunity to learn about wildlife and plant life, with feeding and observation huts and activities for youngsters. Book your tickets in advance.

Meanwhile, Knokke-Heist is staging a packed programme of cultural events to brighten up the season, including the annual Open Gallery Art Weekend on 31 October and 1 November. The eagerly-anticipated 29th edition sees 50 of the city’s galleries open their doors with special shows, and it’s aimed at making art accessible to a wide audience, from curious onlookers to serious collectors.

Continuing the art theme, the big draw of the season is the annual photo event MOØDe at Knokke-Heist’s cultural centre, showing until 10 January (check the website for opening hours). The exhibition of 200 works by world-renowned Dutch photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn is a world premiere. Many of the iconic images from his rich portfolio are on display, some for the first time ever. A crossover of photography and the fashion world, they include portraits of Kate Moss, Alexander McQueen and Naomi Campbell. Corbijn’s influence stretched beyond the fashion borders. As the visual director behind UK electronic band Depeche Mode and through decades of collaborating with rock giants U2, he is an important commentator on contemporary culture, as this unique exhibition reveals.

Later on in the season, one of Knokke-Heist’s festive favourites returns for the third year in a row to light up the winter skies during the holiday season. Light ART from 5 December to 3 January is an illuminated promenade tour through the city’s main shopping streets. The light artworks are inspired by artistic masters, such as Keith Haring and Vincent Van Gogh, and include a fun quest for kids. The temporary light art trail is switched on during the first two weekends of December, from 19 to 23 and 25 to 30 December, plus 1 to 3 January.

If you’ve booked tickets for MOØDe or other Knokke-Heist events and attractions, consider spending the night or longer in the resort. The Visit Knokke-Heist website offers the largest selection of hotel accommodation and you can book your stay directly with hoteliers.
