Skopje – Boat tour in Matka Valley – St Andrea Monastery – City tour of Skopje After breakfast we depart toward Matka Valley, A gorge in which a rich complex of mediaeval building survives, including churches, monasteries and remnants of a fortress (the mediaeval town of Matka). The Canyon covers an area of around 5.000ha and is located 15km south-west of Skopje. We visit the Monastery of St Andrea, built in 1388. Later we have the opportunity to enjoy a boat trip in the lake, and further lunch with traditional menu in the local restaurant. In the afternoon return to Skopje, where we start the city tour, inhabited since at least 4000 BC. We visit the city center, the old bazaar, Kale Fortress, and the memorial house of Mother Tereza. We enter the Church of Sveti Spas, and also the Mustafa Pasha Mosque , a mosque from the 14th century. Dinner and overnight in Skopje.

Skopje – Veljeusa monastery – Vodoca monastery in Strumica – Demir Kapija This morning we transfer towards the small town of Strumica, where are located 2 interesting monasteries. We visit Veljusa Monastery, in Veljusa Village, one of the most valuable symbols of the orthodoxy in North Macedonia. The church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God Eleusa. Veljusa Monastery has remarkable frescos from the 1080 and from the 12th century. Once, it used to be a home of monks, but since 1996 and with the renewal of the monastic life it became a female monastery. Today, there is a sisterhood of around ten nuns living in the monastery. Inside the seamstress workshop they work to prepare hand-decorated cassocks for the Orthodox clergy. Further we visit Vodoca Monastery, a magnetic medieval center with a Byzantine style church dedicated to Saint Leontius. More than 1.000 medieval tombs were discovered alongside with jewelry and ceramics from the 14th century – making it one of the richest archaeological sites in Macedonia. Our next stop is Demir Kapija, a region where various vineries are located. Stop for wine tasting and visit of the vineyards in a local winery. Overnight in Demir Kapija.

Demir Kapija – monastery of the Archangel Michael – The ancient Greek city of Heraclea Lyncestis – Bitola – Ohrid This morning we transfer to Prilep, where we visit the monastery of the Archangel Michael, created on a rock, similar to the Meteora monasteries in Greece. Recent studies show that the church dates from the XII century and it was enlarged in the XIII and XIV century. The monastery shelters were built in 1861. After the monastery visit, we stop to an archeological site; Heraclea Lyncestis, an ancient Greek city in Macedonia, ruled later by the Romans. It was founded by Philip II of Macedonia in the middle of the 4th century BC Famous for its dazzling mosaics, ancient theater and Roman baths, Heraclea is the most vividly preserved city from the surviving Ancient Macedonian Empire in the country. Also, the main Roman road in the area, Via Egnatia went through Heraclea, and Heraclea was an important stop. We stop for refreshments in the city of Bitola, where we can also visit the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart In the evening we arrive in Ohrid, an old town located in the shores of Ohrid Lake –the biggest lake in the region, and one of the oldest lakes in the world. Overnight in Ohrid.

Ohrid – Boat tour to the Monastery of Sveti Naum – Guided tour of Ohrid old town Today we take a boat tour from Ohrid old town towards the Monastery of Sveti Naum, After about 75 minutes panoramic boat tour, we reach and visit the Monastery. Set amidst lush verdure where the River Crna Drin tumbles into the lake, the monastery of St. Naum is a refuge of tranquility at the very southwestern corner of the Macedonian Republic. As with most Byzantine churches, St. Naum was chosen primarily for its location – on a high, rocky outcropping over the lake, above deep forests and life-giving springs of the river Crn Drim. The monastic complex and church of St. Naum were built originally at the turn of the tenth century by the monk that beard the same name; Macedonians believe you can still hear the saint’s heartbeat by pressing an ear to his stone coffin inside the church. In the afternoon we turn to Ohrid. Guided tour of the old town. In it’s narrow alleys lies history dating back over 3.000 years. Both the city and the lake are inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list. We walk through the streets of Ohrid to reach the highest point – Samuil’s Fortress, which offers wonderful landscapes of the city and Lake. We will visit the cathedral Church of St. Sofia, the Ancient theatre, and from the medieval church St. John the Evangelist. Dinner by the lake with fresh trout menu, and overnight.

Ohrid – National Park of Mavrovo – The Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski – The painted mosque in Tetovo – Skopje This morning we return towards Skopje. First we pass through the panoramic mountain road in Mavrovo National Park. While in Mavrovo we visit the Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski. Hidden away on the side of a mountain just off the main road between Debar and Gostivar and dedicated to John the Baptist, it’s said that the history of this masterpiece of a monastery dates back 1,000 years. Destroyed by the Ottomans in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1743 with further expansions taking place the following century, the complex was seriously damaged by fire in 2009 and much of what you see today is a modern imitation. Thankfully however most of the important artefacts, including some outstanding gold-encrusted icons, one of which is said to date from the 11th century, and the church’s gorgeous carved wooden iconostasis, survive. Further, we stop at the small town of Tetovo for a short sightseeing and entrance to the mosque, called Šarena Džamija- meaning the decorated mosque. Afternoon arrival in Skopje and overnight.

Learn more about North Macedonia (Macedonia)

Best time to visit north macedonia.

North Macedonia has a climate somewhere between a transitional continental and Mediterranean climate, which can vary greatly between seasons and regions. The country’s mountainous areas can be subjected to brutally cold winters (December to February), while the lower-lying areas can reach 104°C during summer (June to September). Between May and September is the best time to visit, unless you’re into skiing.

Culture and customs

Centuries-old traditions still take place, many of which incorporate the cultures of rulers gone by (notably the Ottoman Empire who ruled for 500 years). Locals will proudly put on their best folk costume to play traditional music, dance traditional dances (such as the ‘Oro’ circle dance), or take part in rituals passed down for generations. Ethnic North Macedonians – who make up the majority of the population (about 67%) and are largely Orthodox Christians – are frequently at odds with the country's notable Albanian population (about 23%), who are predominantly Muslim. Despite their differences, both groups tend to share conservative and patriarchal values. Visitors should be aware that women are expected to dress modestly and both men and women are expected to cover their knees and shoulders when visiting a mosque or church.

Eating and drinking

North Macedonian cuisine is a delicious mix of Balkan, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences. Rustic dishes are made with plenty of locally grown produce (thanks to the country’s warm and pleasant climate) and fresh fish from the country’s rivers and lakes.

Must-try foods in North Macedonia

1. Tavche gravche

North Macedonia’s version of baked beans is also their national dish. White beans are first boiled and then baked with onions and herbs in a clay pot to create a fragrant and healthy meal.

2. Pastrmajlijada

An oval-shaped bread pie is topped with cubes of meat (usually pork or lamb) and baked to create this savory snack sometimes referred to as a ‘North Macedonian pizza’.

3. Shopska salad

Chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and olives topped with plenty of salty white cheese. Similar to a Greek salad, shopska is a staple served at almost every restaurant.

Geography and environment

Located in southeast Europe , North Macedonia shares its border with Serbia , Bulgaria , Greece , and Albania. Breathtaking mountains – perfect for hiking and climbing in the summer and skiing in the winter – give way to fertile flats. The Dinaric Alps slice through the west and the Vardar Valley occupies much of the central region. Despite being landlocked, North Macedonia contains many rivers and lakes, including the magnificently scenic Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe.

History and government

Early history.

Even by Balkan standards, North Macedonia’s history is characterized by complexity and controversy. Going back to the days of Alexander the Great (the country’s favorite son), North Macedonia has been pin-balled between external powers, from the Romans to the Byzantines, the Serbs to the Ottoman Turks, and the Bulgarians to the Greeks. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that the country officially attained its status as an independent nation – and even that remains a point of contention in certain circles.

From the sixth century AD until the fourteenth, the territory was wrestled to and fro between the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgars, and Serbs before eventually falling to the Ottoman Empire in 1371. The country remained under Turkish rule until the empire’s decline in the eighteenth century, then was once again split up but this time between Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Various pushes for independence and ‘reunion’ with Bulgaria were then stymied by the two World Wars and the advent of communism.

Recent history

At the conclusion of World War II, the country was incorporated into the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia under the leadership of Tito – an era during which, by and large, the territory prospered. With the collapse of European communism, however, came new calls for Macedonian independence, and the state peacefully ceded from the republic in 1992.

Wary of ‘Macedonia’ being used as the country’s proposed name due to implied claims to Aegean Macedonia, Greece made its objections known and the compromise ‘The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ was eventually arrived at. Greek ire was re-aroused in 1994, culminating in its enforcement of an economic embargo that was eventually lifted upon Macedonia’s changing of its flag and agreeing to discussions about its name. The country evaded being embroiled in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s but experienced a potentially catastrophic civil conflict from 1997-2001 over tensions with its sizeable Albanian population. Hostilities were becalmed with a NATO ceasefire, but the Albanian-Macedonian relationship is still a touchy subject that’s best avoided.

In 2019 Macedonia agreed to change its name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

Top 5 North Macedonian Festivals

1. the galičnik wedding festival.

Back in the good old days, the villagers of Galičnik had only one day each year when North Macedonian couples could get married: the 12th of July. These days, starry-eyed lovers can take their vows on whichever day they please, but for one lucky couple, a traditional wedding ceremony is still a possibility. Held on the weekend closest to the 12th of July, the Galičnik Wedding Festival commemorates the custom with dances, elaborate dresses, and a horse bridle being placed on the bride as a test of her obedience. Any North Macedonian couple that has already been married in the civil service can apply for the role of an official couple, with the winning entrant generally being the one with the prettiest bride.

2. Tikveski Grozdober (Grape Carnival)

Each September, Kavadarci, a small town in North Macedonia’s seriously scenic wine-growing region, plays host to the Tikveški Grozdober festival. A celebration of both the town’s liberation and the beginning of the grape harvest, the festival swells with food stalls and music concerts and culminates in an extravagantly costumed carnival procession through the town’s main streets. Oh, and much wine drinking.

3. Ilinden National Festival of Song and Dance

The oldest folk festival in the country, the Ilinden Days, is a celebration of all the folk cultural edifices that have come to represent North Macedonian identity over the years. Folk songs and dancing take center stage here, all performed in traditional garb with traditional instruments. Held over four days, it provides a fascinating insight into traditional North Macedonian culture, as well as serves to preserve its history.

4. Pivo Fest Prilep Beer Fest

North Macedonia’s breweries aren’t as prolific as its wineries, but beer is still a pretty big player in national culture and deemed worthy of a festival. The first Pivo Fest Prilep was held in 2003 and, in contrast to many of the country’s other tradition-orientated festivals, the focus here is on live music, grilled meats, skimpy attire, and ales abundant. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s now one of the most popular summer events in the country.

5. Carnival Procka

Kicking off three days before the Easter fast begins, the Procka Carnival, which is also held in Prilep, is a celebration of the unconditional forgiveness demonstrated by Jesus for his fellow humans. During this brief holiday, the young ask for forgiveness from their elders, who reply by saying ‘you are forgiven from me and from God.’ If this all sounds a bit somber (not to mention presumptuous), there are also great feasting opportunities in preparation for the fasting ahead and things are livened up with parades of highly decorative ‘anything goes’ costumes.

The narrow cobbled streets of Skopje’s Old Bazaar (Carsija), the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, offer a more unique shopping experience. Step back in time to the days of Ottoman rule and browse craftsmen shops selling unique jewelry, handmade textiles, and terracotta pots while locals sit outside cafes savoring sweet desserts and strong coffee.

Some stores in North Macedonia allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax-Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you are leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

Greece Tours: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Greece for a vacation?

Greece’s climate changes significantly throughout the year, so you should plan your visit around your preferred weather. The summer is the peak season for Greece tours because that’s when the weather is warmest. That also means you have to deal with large crowds if you visit during the summer, which isn’t ideal for everyone. The shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — are a better time to visit if you want to avoid traffic. While the weather isn’t quite as warm as it is during the summer, visiting in the spring or autumn gives you an opportunity to enjoy a more authentic Greece vacation.

What are the must-visit islands during a Greece vacation?

Greece is home to several beautiful islands that travelers love to visit. Some of the islands you must see during your trip to Greece include Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu. Santorini is the premier vacation spot in Greece, offering stunning views that only get better as you get higher up in the cliffs. This is where most people go when they visit Greece. Mykonos is another Greek island that’s known for its beauty. Sitting at the center of the Cyclades group of islands, Mykonos combines stunning natural views with bustling nightlife. Crete is the largest and most populous Greek island, making it a great place to visit during your Greece vacation. If you want a more historical experience, Rhodes and Corfu offer a combination of natural beauty and historical importance that visitors love. Whether you’re taking one of our Christian Alaska cruises or a trip to Greece, there are scenic islands all over the world.

What are the top historical sites to visit in Greece?

Just like our Germany tours , our Greek tours give you a chance to visit several historical sites that played an important role in European and Christian history. The Acropolis is an ancient citadel that sits above the city of Athens. Here you can find the remains of several key historical structures, including the Parthenon. The Palace of Knossos in Crete is an important Bronze Age archaeological site. This palace also experienced the fall of the Ottoman Empire which eventually led to Crete and Greece unifying. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus was home to dramatic shows and games near the end of the 4th century BC. Constructed by Polykleitos the Younger, this theater has been used to host occasional modern events as well.

What local Greek dishes should I try?

You can find a wide variety of food on our U.S. tours , but Greece and many other countries are known for making their own unique, world-renowned dishes. Moussaka is similar to lasagna but it’s typically made with potato or eggplant along with ground lamb or beef. It’s not easy to make, but it’s well worth it. Spanakopita is a savory spinach pie that’s popular in Greece, made with spinach, feta, and a crispy phyllo pastry. Souvlaki is grilled meat — and sometimes vegetables — cooked on a skewer and often served with tzatziki, a Greek dip made from yogurt, cucumber, and other ingredients. Baklava is a traditional Greek dessert that’s made of many layers of pastry sheets with chopped nuts. If you have a sweet tooth, baklava is a must-try.

What are the visa requirements for visiting Greece?

Before booking your Greece and Europe tour, make sure you have a valid passport and research visa requirements. If your passport is about to expire, you may be denied entry to Greece. As far as visa requirements go, you may need a visa if you’re not from a Schengen country. You may be able to visit Greece for a period of time without a visa if you’re a US citizen. Take a moment to check the latest visa requirements from an official source or the Greek embassy in your country.

Can I use my credit card everywhere in Greece?

Like our Ireland tours , you can use your credit card in many stores and restaurants throughout Greece without a problem. Visa and Mastercard credit cards are widely accepted in many parts of the world, so you can bring your credit card with you and swipe it most places you go. Keep in mind that US credit cards aren’t accepted everywhere, so it’s smart to carry some cash. Cash is especially important when you’re visiting rural areas and smaller islands. You can convert USD to euro at several banks throughout Greece.

What is the typical tipping etiquette in Greece?

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory, so you don’t have to tip if you don’t want to. Generally speaking, you should leave a 5-10% tip at a restaurant if the service is good. You should also round up fares for taxis to give your drivers a small tip. Whether you book a Greece vacation or one of our Costa Rica tours , make sure you carry some extra cash for tips.

Christian Pilgrimage Journeys

Steps Of Paul In Greece / Biblical Greece

A 7 days / 6 nights biblical tour in greece, day 1: thessalonica.

The trip will start with your arrival in Thessalonica airport where we will meet and transfer you to your hotel. Day at leisure, dinner and overnight Thessalonica.

DAY 2: Thessalonica / Philippi / Kavala / Thessalonica

Breakfast and trip to Philippi , the town where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. “And from there (He went) to Philippi, which is the leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman Colony. We remained in this city some days…” (Acts 16:11-12). Paul arrived here with Silas and Luke on the winter of AD 49 to AD50. There the first Christian baptism was performed, of a woman named Lydia. Although they were prosecuted and arrested, they received God’s help to escape from prison (Acts 16: 25-26) where there was the conversion of the jailer (Acts 16: 31). We will visit the Roman Theatre, probable site of the prison where Paul and Silas were arrested. We will continue towards the city of Kavala, the ancient city of Neapolis (Acts 16:11) where Paul landed with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. It was later renamed Christoupolis, meaning city of Christ, because it was the first European city to accept Christianity. We will visit the Roman Aqueduct and the ruins of the Acropolis. Dinner and overnight in Thessalonica.

DAY 3: Thessalonica city tour / Veria / Vergina / Kalambaka

After breakfast the trip continues with exploring the city of Thessalonica, where Paul preached the gospel in the second and third missionary journey. For the early Christians of this city he wrote epistles “To the Thessalonians.”. We will visit the Cathedral of St. Demetrius, the Protector Saint of the city, the Agora, the Church of Saint Sofia, the White Tower and the Byzantine fortress of the city, the triumphal Arch of Galerius starting at the Via Egnatia, once a strategic artery of the Roman Empire. Next stop will be Veria (Berea), another town evangelized by Paul (Acts 17: 10-14). When Saint Paul visited this town in AD50, he came across a more “noble” Jewish community where he preached and created an important Church. This is where Paul met Sopatros (or Sosipatros), who would later become a valuable comrade who followed him on his return journey to Asia. We will visit the ancient synagogue where we will see the Byzantine mosaic in the monument commemorating his preaching. Then we will head to Vergina, the legendary burial site of the Macedonian kings. This place is considered as a World Heritage Site, also known as the Royal Tombs and houses the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Depart for Kalambaka for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: Kalambaka / Meteora / Delphi

After breakfast the trip continues with a visit the spectacular Meteora, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a mountainous region of stunning scenery. You will see hundred-year-old Byzantine monasteries on top of huge rocks, during the Middle Ages, first built in the 14th century by monks seeking isolation and salvation. We will visit the most famous of them, which is now a popular museum, the Great Meteoron, to admire superb icons, old manuscripts, unique mosaics and frescoes. We will continue to Delphi for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: Delphi / Athens

After breakfast we will continue our tour with exploring Delphi. Delphi is the famous oracle where the priestess of Apollo, Pitia, influenced, with their prophecies the history of cities and states of antiquity. Visit the archaeological site and museum. The museum houses an impressive collection associated with ancient Delphi, including the earliest known notation of a melody, the famous Charioteer, golden treasures discovered beneath the Sacred Way, and fragments of reliefs from the Siphnian Treasury. Close to the exit is the inscription that mentions the Roman proconsul Gallio. The reference to proconsul Gallio in the inscription provides an important marker for developing a chronology of the life of Apostle Paul by relating it to the trial of Paul in Achaea mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (18:12-17). Dinner and overnight in Athens.

DAY 6: Athens City Tour / Corinth / Cenchrea

After breakfast we will go on a city tour to explore the city of Athens, including the Agora of Athens (Acts 17:16-34). Athens is one of the most glorious cities in the world and the cradle of western civilization as we know it today. We will visit the main points of interest in the city: the Acropolis, the Parthenon and Mars’ Hill (Areopagus) where Paul preached the truth to the Gentile Nation. After that, we will head toward ancient Corinth (Acts 18.1-18). It was in ancient Corinth where Paul came and worked, established a thriving church and writing two of the epistles, which are now part of the New Testament. We will see all the sites that are associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s seat, the pillars, stairs, and the place of public worship, where Paul preached. All these visits will certainly enhance the understanding of Corinthians I and II. Before ending the tour and return to Athens, we will pass by the ancient Greek port of Cenchrea (Acts 18:18) where Paul was during his second missionary journey and the ruin of the early Christian 5th Century basilica. Return to Athens, dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: Athens Airport

According to the schedule of your return flight you will be taken to the airport of Athens leaving with great memories from your Steps of Paul trip.

The above program can be combined with a 3-Day or 4-Day Cruise to the Greek Islands as per the tables below:

Biblical Readings

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: and Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead ; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. Acts 17:1,2,3
And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; and from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certaindays. Acts 16:10,11,12
Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:1,2,3
Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things. And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchreae: for he had a vow. Acts 18:17,18

What to expect

What's included, arrival in thessaloniki.

Welcome to Thessaloniki! You will be met at the airport, on arrival, and transferred to your hotel. Take the remaining time of the day to discover Thessaloniki! A vibrant city rich with history and mythology, enlivened by bustling outdoor cafes, pedestrian streets that wind through the city's numerous stores and its fair share of urban eccentrics, a city full of contrasts. Overnight in Thessaloniki

go to Day 1

Day 1 - Thessaloniki to Kavala

(Acts 16:9-11)"Come over into Macedonia and help us..." Apostle Paul was praying, asking for the direction of the holy spirit as to which city he should travel to. He arrived in Troas and there he had a dream, sent by the spirit of God. Therefore his trip to Europe began and the first country he visited was Greece. He arrived at Neapolis (Modern city of Kavala) which was situated in Philippi . Neapolis was the city port of Philippi which was named after Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great, and became a very important Roman colony. There, Ap. Paul established the very first Christian church in Europe. One of the highlights of the first day of the tour will be our visit to the river of Lydia , otherwise known as the "Jordan river of Greece". At this place, where Ap. Paul met Lydia and where his so-called prison is situated (Acts 16:40) , we will have the possibility of placing a prayer. We will also visit the "Agora" , the city square forum which was one of the most important places in the city, during Paul's time, and is mentioned in Acts. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

go to Day 2

Day 2 - Thessaloniki sightseeing, Thessaloniki to Pella, Pella to Vergina

(Acts 17:1)"Now, when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica..." One of the most spiritual churches of the New Testament was in Thessalonica. The tour will start with sightseeing of the city of Thessaloniki. Driving to the old city, we will be able to admire the Byzantine city walls , the white tower , the triumph arch of Galerius and the Rotunda . We will visit the Roman forum , the church of St.Demetrius , who is the patron saint of the city, and the Archaeological museum . After that, we will go to Pella , the new capital of the Macedonian kingdom and the birthplace of Phillip II and Alexander the Great. Our next stop will be at Vergina , the first Capital of the Macedonians, where we can see the amazing artworks of the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

go to Day 3

Day 3 - Thessaloniki to Dion, Dion to Kalambaka

(Acts 17:14-15)"And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea..." We will visit Dion , which was the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians. It was from the port of Dion that Ap. Paul possibly sailed to Athens. Dion is an extensive archaeological park. Its museum houses some of the rarest and most unique statues, reliefs and inscriptions. We will also see some of the most well preserved ancient roads and walls, two early Christian basilicas and finally a few Christian houses and shops of the time of Ap. Paul. Afterwards our trip will take us to Kalambaka , at the base of "Meteora", which has been characterized by Unesco as a "unique phenomenon of cultural heritage". These rocky formations are littered with Byzantine monasteries (14th - 16th century A.D.) Overnight stay in Kalambaka.

go to Day 4

Day 4 - Meteora sightseeing, Kalambaka to Delphi

Our morning will begin with a brief sightseeing of Meteora and a visit to one of the oldest monasteries this beautiful place has to offer. In the afternoon, our trip will take us to Delphi , passing by Thermopylae which was famous for its 480 B.C. battle between the ancient Spartans and the Persians. Delphi is situated on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos and was considered the center of the ancient world (the omphalos of the earth). It was a sanctuary for all and a home to the oracle of god Apollo, Pythia, famous for her prophecies. (Acts 16:16)"...a certain damsel, possessed with a spirit of divination, met with us..." Overnight stay in Delphi

go to Day 5

Day 5 - Delphi sightseeing, Delphi to Athens

In the morning we will commence our tour of Delphi, visiting the archaeological site of the temple of Apollo , its treasuries , the ancient theatre and the stadium , as well as its wonderful museum. There, among many wonders, we'll be able to admire the superb bronze charioteer and the Gallio inscription. In the afternoon we will depart for Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.

go to Day 6

Day 6 - Athens sightseeing

(Acts 17:16-34)"Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry..." In the morning we will begin our sightseeing tour of Athens, which includes the house of parliament , the ancient olympic stadium (a.k.a. Kallimarmaron, Panathenaic Stadium), the temple of Zeus and the Hellenic Academy . We will then go to the Acropolis hill and visit the world famous Parthenon and the Erechtheion . We will continue to the nearby Ares Rock (Areopagus - Mars Hill) where Ap. Paul gave his well known sermon (Acts 17:16-34) . On this historic place, having a very good view of the modern city of Athens, we will have the possibility of prayer for Greece. Afterwards, we will go to the Athenian Agora which was the center of the ancient city where Ap. Paul met with the Epicurean and the Stoic philosophers. Our day's tour will end with a visit to the new Acropolis museum, one of the best worldwide. Free afternoon. Overnight stay in Athens.

go to Day 7

Day 7 - Athens to Corinth

We will leave Athens for Corinth early in the morning  (Acts 18:1-8) . Once there, we will begin our tour with the "Canal" and explain, in detail, why Corinth was such a wealthy center in the days of Ap. Paul. We will then visit the archaeological site and walk through the Roman forum where the "Bema" , otherwise known as the judgement seat of Gallio, is situated. We will talk about head covering, women in the church, and "the fountain of living waters", presenting you with details and little known facts. Afterwards we will see the "Erastus" inscription and talk about its meaning, its background story and its role in the history of Ap. Paul in Corinth (Romans 16:23) . We will then visit "acro-Corinth" , where we will talk in depth about its history and its meaning for the ancient world. Moving on, we will go to Kechries (Cenchreae), the eastern port of ancient Corinth at the church of which Phoebe was the deaconess (Romans 16:1) . After that, we will visit the Isthmia area where we're going to find out why Ap. Paul was using athletic language in his letters to the Corinthians. Return to Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.

Juli was our tour guide and was fantastic! He knew the local history, architecture, culture, food, and current environment. We could not have found a more knowledgeable guide and competent driver on our own! And the Choose Balkans team that organizes and manages all the logistics are world class! I've traveled to more than 40 countries, and I'd match this tour group with any in the world I've used before. I'm grateful for a memorable experience and for making our time in Tirana worthwhile. It was a trip that we will not forget!
