Just picked up a safari 377, what now?

So I just picked up a 377 safari, it a 1988, making it 32 years old. I'm tearing the entire thing down right now. What if anything should I be looking for? The engine seems like it is in good shape, starts on the first or second pull, I think the track is shot, but I have another track I'm going to try and fit, but I will need to change the drivers to 2.52". Are there many known trouble points on them? It looks really simple, so I'm not expecting many issues, but lots of people have gotten over their heads by thinking that. I'm taking it to the pressure washer to get it down to clean plastic and metal. I might get a bit crazy by putting in a newer skid, depends if the current one is worth saving.

I don't know much about your sled (yet) but from what I've heard over the years, be really careful of the hood hinges. I think 80% of safari hoods are trashed at the hinges. I'm not sure what year Safari's suffer from this affliction. But others should.

I have one crack near the hinges. From the corner of the headlight down to the front. I'm sure I can fix it from the back, little bit of sheet aluminum and some rivets, might not ever notice it has a crack. I'm not sure if the skid works right, I'll need to take that apart. I've got it down to as bare a chassis as I think it needs to be now

Check the rear suspension shafts there almost always seized and if your sled is like mine they didn’t have grease points so it’s good to add those also assuming the oil injection is still hooked up check the lines and cables I usually recommend getting rid of it cause it’s easy and one less thing to worry about

Also if you put a newer suspension and track in it post up your progress I’m thinking of putting a 121 on mine and would love to see what you do

I had few safari my issue were the sliding half bushing on the secondary wears faster than others very hard to find

I wonder if anyone has a Safari, that had the pop-up headlight, that has a cowling in decent shape. I have one in my yard and the cowling is in very rough shape. The lever for the headlight is hanging down. Not sure I want to put any time or effort into fixing it up. Track is also shot.

If you are looking for a new track contact GB Distribution For the cowling there was a guy making them in fibreglass a while back, you will need to do a search.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the a arm Safaris weren't 1 of Ski-doo's stellar products. My father had 1 & it wasn't the best handling sled. Top heavy in my books. He was always tipping it over. He switched to an Indy Trail around '95 & it was a vast improvement. No problems w/it. Doing some comparisons before he bought the Poo, he found that the handlebar & seat heights of the Safari were taller than the Trail. Also, the Safari's ski stance was narrower than the Trail.

Ski-Doo Safari. Good starter sled?

My wife had a 88, and my daughter had a 89.. They were great on gas and oil..Rode a little stiff compared to the newer iron..The motors are a well proven design.. Good starter sled.MMV.

you should be able to find something 10 years newer for the same price I suspect.. unless its under $500

377 ski doo safari

What price Dude :wtf: he did not mention price I had a 85 Safari 447,87 Safari 377 and 89 Safari Scout E(same as 377),all good sleds great in deep snow for the power Only thing to watch is the oil injection pump on the recoil and the secondary helixes as the setting pin likes to eat as at them BTW stay away from the Safari L or any Safari with Aarms front as they are heavy POS 100+ lbs more then the leaf spring 84-92 Safaris and no good off trail and riding like a lumber wagon even with independant

377 ski doo safari

i had a 89 when i was younger. it spent almost as much time upside down than it did on the track. was a great starter sled for young kids but for a little extra you can get something with the same power but with a wider ski stance, which in turn makes it more stable for the beginner.

377 ski doo safari

We had a 93 and it was a great sled. Never missed a beat while we had it.

We had a 92 LCE 4?? cc liquid, single carb when I was in High School total POS compared to the 94 arctic cat cougar 440 we had. The cougar was faster, rode better, less repairs, and easier for beginners to maneuvar.

377 ski doo safari

I have a 1984 Safari 377. I have found it damn near bullet proof. It's seems the harder I ride it, the better it behaves. They are very inexpensive to repair should the need arises and parts are ready available. I bought a full parts sled for 80 bucks and stripped it. I will say you might outgrow its top speed quickly as the single carb units top out about 40 to 50. I plan to shave my heads this spring and rebuild a motor I blew up and bore it 20 over which will bring the 377 to approximately a 442cc. It is a really fun ride though.

My dad had an 85 Safari 377 very good beginner sled, Handles very good, great on gas, light snowmobile. The only real issue is the suspension or lack there of. It's smaller than most of the full sized sleds of the 90's. It doesn't set the world on fire in the power department either, but it wasn't really made to be fast.

377 ski doo safari

That motor was around forever in a few sleds right up to 04-05 in the 380 MXZ, might just run forever

1988/89 ski doo safari 377

  • Add to quote

Im new to the forum and i have a couple of questions. I was given this sled and i dont know if its a 1988 or 1989. it runs good for the age but it looks really ugly. Does anyone know where I can find the same hood or a different hood that will bolt right on thats in decent condition? And my second question, the previous owner disconnected the oil injection. Is it worth reconnecting? If yes, how would i do this. thanks for any help.

I have an 83 and 84, and they are ugly. But anyway, look on the tunnel tag, should be mid=way down the right, I think. If it says manufactured in 88, then it's an 89. Look at ebay or a snowmobile salvage yard for a new cowl. And the first question on the oil injection is why did he disconnect it? Was it broken? The main question is, how important to you is oil injection (i.e. just driving up to a gas pump)? Hope this helps.

I'd be careful reconnecting the oil injection. If the previous owner just pulled the oil supply line and left the pump on the engine, than I'll bet the pump is toast.

well i have been mixing. You guys make a great point he probably did disconnect it because there was a problem. I dont mind at all mixing but just to be sure what is the exact mixture needed? I have been running 40:1. And also is there any different cowls that will bolt right up from a newer sled?? by the way it is a 1989. Thanks rotaxrage and butters_mcfeely for your help.

I would mix the gas 50:1. 40:1 seems a little much, but it is not a huge deal. As far as the hood goes, any hood from a Safari 89 or older should work and there are probably others from that same vintage (maybe the citation???). In 1990 they redesigned the front end of the Safaris and those will not fit on your sled. A great website to go to for cross reference is http://216.37.204.206/ingles/Skidoo_oem/skidoo.asp they have microfiches of all the skidoo sleds from 1987 to 2003. Take a look on there and you may find some other cowls that you could use.

thanks a lot for the help butters_mcfeely

I agree...50:1

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
