Meet our team of experts

Tom has been with Yellow Dog for more than ten years, after first starting as an intern at the company straight after graduation from the University of Montana. He has literally worn every hat and worked in every position possible at Yellow Dog, and no one knows the inner-working of the company – or the fishing travel industry – better. After working for years in an overall sales role for the company, Tom’s role expanded in 2021 to help manage all of our programs at Yellow Dog. Originally from the Midwest, Tom is a graduate of the University of Montana and as fanatical an angler as anyone we’ve ever met. When not in the office, Tom can be found fishing one of the many backcountry streams Montana has to offer or sitting at the vise tying up some new creations. Over his years with Yellow Dog, Tom has traveled extensively throughout both fresh and saltwater destinations around the globe. If you attend any of the consumer shows where Yellow Dog is participating, chances are great that you’ll meet Tom in the Yellow Dog booth!

Jake is Yellow Dog’s program director for our U.S. programs. Originally from Virginia, Jake moved to Idaho in 2005 and started his career in the fly fishing industry at Henry’s Fork Anglers, one of the most well-known destination fly shops in the Western United States. After leaving Idaho at the beginning of 2013, he relocated to Salt Lake City and worked for a top fly fishing e-commerce retailer, and then as a sales representative for some of the top brands in the industry. Jake is an unbelievable source of knowledge on all things having to do with fly fishing, and he now looks forward to traveling the globe pursuing his passion and helping others to do the same.

Kristen Tripp is Yellow Dog’s Program Director for Cuba and Yellow Dog’s Bluewater Program. A love of travel, culture, the outdoors and angling were cultivated from growing up in Nepal with summers in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming. With travel in her blood, Kristen has lived and traveled all over Latin and South America (including Chile, Argentina, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba) along with a long list of countries in other continents as well. Despite her global travel experience, she still maintains a healthy bucket list for future exploration. Kristen’s international travel experience combined with her Spanish language skills and an aptitude for complex trip logistics give her the skills necessary to provide travelers to Cuba with a fantastic experience. An angler, paddler, biker, hiker and general outdoor enthusiast, Kristen loves to get outside when possible to explore, and always loves the opportunity to put her Spanish to use. A “logistics addict” with a get-it-done attitude, you can bet that Kristen will work hard to take care of your trip details. If she ever lacks for an immediate answer to your questions, she will work hard to track down the information for you and can troubleshoot in two languages, a must for Cuba trips!

Jack was born in Southern California and grew up camping, surfing, and fishing with family and friends. When he graduated from high school he followed his love for the mountains to Colorado where he attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Atmospheric and Ocean Science. After graduating, Jack chose to follow his passions to Argentina where he first guided fly fishing. For the next 5 years, Jack worked as a guide splitting his time between Argentina, Uruguay, Alaska, Mexico, and Wyoming, many years spending over 300 days on the water. Jack has guided for a variety of species including trout in Patagonia, Golden Dorado in the jungle, and striped marlin in Baja. Recently, after years of non-stop travel and remote living, Jack decided to step away from guiding and outfitting at destination operations. He is extremely grateful for the experiences he was able to have, the people he was able to meet, and the places he was able to see throughout his time as a guide. Jack is passionate about travel, fly fishing, and adventure—He finds great joy in helping others experience what he loves.

The world’s best fly-fishing trips.

Start close to home—discover more than 200 Orvis-sanctioned fly-fishing resources across the country, including lodges, guides and guide services, outfitters, expeditions, and kids’ camps, with additional resources in Canada and Mexico. Each meets our rigorous standards—we’ve already done the legwork for you. Shop for a vacation package, or plan your own. We’ll help you design an adventure for your entire family or a trip just for you and your angling friends. And look to Orvis to help organize a memorable trip for your corporate group. Find helpful tools—useful lists of suggested gear , and species tabs for insight into what’s biting where you’re going. Learn about Orvis’s special events in North America and as far afield as Belize, Argentina, Chile, and beyond.

Here in the United States, you’ll find a fly-fishing destination on every corner of the map, something close to you wherever you are. Maine’s Libby Sporting Camps (2007 Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year) accommodates guests in private log cabins, with family-style meals served in its historic lodge. Here anglers fish for brook trout, landlocked salmon, and other species that change with the seasons. Choose Alaska for its char, salmon, and trout. Crystal Creek Lodge in King Salmon, Alaska, has earned the distinguished Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year award three times, most recently in 2019; it’s a trusted partnership going back to 1991. The C Lazy U Ranch touts “something for everyone,” including horseback riding, incredible trout fishing, and gourmet cuisine in its historic and luxurious Granby, Colorado, setting. And California’s Sierra Fly Fisher guide service in Bass Lake serves beginners through advanced anglers, with excursions in Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada on waters teeming with rainbows, brookies, browns, and rarer golden trout populations. Consider these mere appetizers, something to get you thinking and planning, and remember that fly fishing isn’t just for grown-ups: Introduce your kids (or grandkids) to the joy of angling while they’re young. Discover outdoor youth adventure programs for all ages.

Go farther afield. Fish Quebec’s Grand Cascapédia during your stay at Salmon Lodge. Or catch the northern lights (among other things) on Wollaston Lake in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In the Caribbean and Central America, try bonefishing in the Bahamas: Join our partners H20 Bonefishing on Grand Bahama Island for world-class saltwater fly fishing and accommodations at a popular resort. Belize’s charming El Pescador Lodge is an excellent destination for the novice and the seasoned angler alike; the Bonefish Bonanza trip was conceived for an intimate group of anglers and their guests and boasts guided fishing aboard a Mexican-style Panga skiff, as well as snorkeling in the extensive barrier reef and excursions to Mayan ruins on the mainland. Or enroll in the Belize Fly-Fishing School at El Pescador; learn top-notch angling techniques under the watchful eye of an Orvis fly-fishing instructor.

South American offerings include Chile and Argentina, where our late Board Chairman Leigh Perkins’s penchant for the Estancia Tecka was predicated on his intimate knowledge of the waters there. New Zealand’s Stonefly Lodge offers diversions for the non-anglers in your group, as do many other of our vacation packages. Asian trips remove anglers from civilization to the far reaches of Mongolia, where adventure goes beyond fishing for prehistoric salmonids to include a brush with the indigenous culture of the region’s nomadic population. And this is just a glancing blow—we’ve not even nodded to our partners in Europe, where you will find exotic, luxurious, and far-reaching fishing excursions.

Who better than Orvis to help you plan the details of your next fly-fishing adventure? We invite you inside; consider this your comprehensive fly-fishing guide to the best trips the world has to offer. And the common denominator among them is the prized Orvis endorsement. Click around, and then pack your rods: The fish are waiting.

Definitely worth the buy! Feels and cast like a top name brand but for a price you can’t beat!

9 ft, 9/10 weight, 4 Piece Fly Rod | Wild Water Fly Fishing

Heidi was prompt and diligent in ensuring the proper address was input. Package arrived on time and was carefully packaged. Hope to tempt some smallies, white bass, largemouth and whatever grabs a popper or streamer.

Die Cast 9 Weight or 10 Weight Fly Reel | Wild Water Fly Fishing

I gave these rods to a casting instructor to give to his students and had nothing of the sort even tough they lived on an Oregon premium steelhead river. I have not seen the rods but was told they were good rods.

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Kit, 9 ft 5/6 wt Rod

These are the perfect rod for your youngster to get started with that is actually castable for their body size, they also make a great small stream rod for any angler. The quality for the price really impressed me.

5 ft 6 in, 3 wt, 4-piece Wild Country Rod | Wild Water Fly Fishing

I picked this kit up after I picked up a euro nymph shorty fly line to use with my standard 9’ 5wt and decided that wasn’t going to cut it. Everything about the combo is great, I just think some tweaks to kit would really make this kit an even better deal!

The rod and reel look and feel great. I haven’t used any other euro-specific rods but this seems to work pretty well. The sensitivity is fine and I can tell much better when I’m in contact with the bottom compared to when I was using my 9’ 5wt. I’ve caught bigger fish in current and it has a good backbone. The reel also looks and feels nice and has fought trout nicely.

The kit itself could be designed for euro nymphing a bit better. The fly line is just a standard floating weight forward 3wt, not a euro line and the leader is a tapered 5x leader, not a euro leader. This is my ONLY complaint, it would have been nice to have a euro leader and euro nymph specific fly line included.

Everything about this kit is still awesome, the flies included are quality, and I would still absolutely buy it again!

Euro Nymphing Fly Fishing Kit 10 ft, 3 wt, 4-piece Rod | Wild Water Fly Fishing

I have not got to use this yet, but it looks like a really nice, and complete package for the cost. I am looking forward to trying it out in the river.

Wild Water Fly Fishing Kit, 9' 9/10 Weight Rod and CNC Reel Package

Combo arrived quickly and was complete. Every part of the combo is good quality and had 5 rainbows in hand within 20 minutes ( Caddis fly in March, included in combo) I purchased 2 and definitely recommend for any one looking to get started to get this combo read the description before you purchase to match the flies pack to your area ( Northwest pack for me, floating line) so far it's been a great fly rod and reel.

Deluxe Fly Fishing Kit, 9 ft 5/6 wt Rod | Wild Water Fly Fishing

The shorter rod makes for easier access to overgrown small creeks. Better for casting with accuracy in small spaces.

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Kit, 5 ft 6 in 3 wt Rod

I got this kit as a gift and I am absolutely satisfied with the quality, assortment and products included. I am planning on getting other choices as time goes by, since it is a great equipment for casting lovers.

Wild Water Tenkara Fly Fishing Kit 12 ft Rod

I bought this set up to do some smaller brook fishing in West Virginia. When I received it and set up it up for the next day the reel had a sticking spot when reeling in. I contact wild water fly fishing to let them know about the reel. With less than a minute call a new reel was on its way! We had so much fun with this short rod my son bought one the next Monday.

My original wild water rod got damaged on a windy day .Hummer rear door crushed it . Reached out to customer care and no replacement parts available for rod . So purchased the new ax have used once on a windy day feels good . Will start using it soon as weather improves in the mid west

9 ft, 5/6 weight, 4-piece Fly Rod | Wild Water Fly Fishing

Nice little pack and rod. It’s a gift so no use yet, but put it together to check it and really seems quality for the price.

Wild Water Standard Fly Fishing Combo, 7 ft 3/4 wt Rod

I love these rods . I have used the warranty service which has been phenomenal and quick.

It was the perfect partner to my Wild River 5/6 wt , I love the products ! Thanks for great service Heidi! Tell Eric you need a raise !! Buy USA 🇺🇸 !! Both are great setups w excellent action! Quality 110 percent !

Wild Water Fly Fishing Kit, 9' 7/8 Weight Rod and Reel Package

Great reel, nice line and looks. Works just right!

In Belize, a Saltwater Fly-Fishing Paradise Awaits

T here’s a certain mystique to a good fishing lodge. It’s a flavor that, while familiar to those who frequent fishing destinations around the world, still remains welcoming and encouraging to the new angler. It’s a fine line to ride — keeping seasoned, globe-trotting fishermen content while also teaching and embracing those on their first fishing experience. For saltwater fly fishing, the challenge grows: it’s a niche sport, and doing it in saltwater narrows the cadre even further. These anglers tend to be driven, sometimes obsessive individuals who often talk about the “addiction” of casting for fish in a saltwater environment, even if they only get to do it one week a year.

All of this to say: it takes a well-run, thoughtful retreat to balance the seasoned saltwater angler with the newbie. I’ve fly-fished six continents, spending time at lodges I yearn to return to , as well as some I was happy to put in the rearview mirror. They say some places get in your blood, becoming a touchpoint over the years. One of those, for me, is Belize’s El Pescador Lodge. A decade ago I lingered a few days after a photo-shoot job, hoping to get a look at what this “flats fishing” thing was all about.

I got my desired introduction, and the first taste of a place that keeps me coming back.

A short flight from the States (about three hours from either Dallas or Atlanta), Belize is home to world-class saltwater fly fishing, and its close proximity to the U.S. makes it far more attainable than other far-flung saltwater destinations. It’s also an easy country to travel in. Most locals speak at least a little English, and many restaurants and shops in the larger towns even accept U.S. currency. For those perhaps pondering a first-ever trip out of the country, these two factors make the country approachable; it’s a good first-time-abroad travel experience.

Incoming anglers will land at Goldson International Airport. (The airport staff are used to seeing fishing gear come through, so don’t be surprised if they ask if you’re more a Permit Guy or a Tarpon Guy. They know the difference in Belize.) Then it’s time to hop into one of Tropic Air’s Cessna Grand Caravans — Tropic is amazing and easy to work with on all levels — for the quick flight out to the island of Ambergris Caye, home to El Pescador Lodge .

Welcome to El Pescador Lodge

Located near the town of San Pedro, El Pescador has been owned and run by the same family for more than 25 years. Three generations of the family are involved, giving the lodge a non-corporate, home-like feel. El Pescador has also won a variety of awards and accolades from the fly-fishing and travel industries, but maintains the feel of a family-run establishment — something becoming increasingly rare in today’s travel industry.

It’s a true fisherman’s lodge. The main building houses comfortable, hotel-like rooms, while eight villas line either side of the property for those traveling in groups or looking for a bit more privacy. Three swimming pools dot the resort, offering a cool respite to fishermen returning from the flats.

But the heart of the lodge is the Grand Slam Bar, named for the feat of catching all three of the area’s most famous sport fish species (bonefish, tarpon and permit) in a single day. Inside the bar, the impeccably observant staff whip up all kinds of local concoctions and island favorites (pro tip: go for the Grande or the Painkiller after a long day on the water). The kitchen serves hors d’oeuvres every afternoon, and also manages to supply three quality meals a day, including box lunches for the anglers. In the evenings, family-style dinner is served outside under a spacious veranda, allowing guests to mingle and talk about the day’s adventures. This is what it’s all about: camaraderie, with anglers of all skill levels mixing, making friends and trading stories.

Chasing Dorado (And Finding Home) on the Sea of Cortez

Fishing in belize.

El Pescador has access to more than 400 square miles of shallow fishing waters surrounding the island, and the blue-green tropical flats are home to healthy numbers of bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and other Caribbean gamefish. Fishing is good year-round, though many diehard tarpon anglers often visit from May to August, when larger, migratory tarpon swing through.

Like most fisheries, it can be encouraging one day and frustrating the next. It’s the nature of the game, especially fly fishing, and especially fly fishing in saltwater. There’s no accounting for weather, air pressure or simply the mood of the fish. But many saltwater anglers (this writer included, many years ago) have caught their first bonefish in these waters. There’s enough variety on the flats surrounding Ambergris Caye that a week spent fishing hardly seems long enough; one day you’re cruising deep in mangroves looking for tarpon in lagoons, the next you’re wading turquoise flats stalking a school of tailing permit. For serious saltwater anglers, it’s a playground worth exploring, and one that fishermen of any level won’t be eager to leave. Dolphins, manatees and iguanas are common sights during the day.

It’s also possible to catch a Grand Slam straight from the lodge dock — not common, but possible, and a feat I’ve seen in person — so fishing from the property itself is a good way to spend a relaxed evening at the lodge. For fishing days, the guides pick guests up and take them to various fishing grounds pending weather, conditions and where the fish have been eating. It’s hard to beat an hour-long run in the panga, the local style of fishing skiff, as the sun rises over the Caribbean, downing a fresh breakfast burrito made early that morning by the hardworking kitchen crew.

Sometimes (okay, often) the fishing is less about the fishing, and more about the things that come with that fishing experience, breakfast burritos included.

For Those Not Fishing-Inclined

As difficult as it may be for some anglers to imagine, some people actually want to relax on their vacation. They prefer to sit on the beach, swim in the sea and just generally play tourist. El Pescador caters well to significant others who don’t fish and even to family groups; there are plenty of non-angling activity options. For those who prefer more action than lounging by the pool with a cocktail, renting a golf cart and driving into San Pedro to explore, shop and dine for the day provides a good taste of local culture.

The clear turquoise waters are also home to world-class snorkeling and diving, and charters are readily available from the island. It’s also possible to plan a long day of adventure and head back to the mainland to explore Mayan ruins or go cave tubing in the jungle.

Belize Food Culture

Belize is a foodie’s delight. As one would expect in the Caribbean, fresh seafood, tropical fruits and quality rum abound. Be sure to sample a good ceviche (El Pescador’s kitchen staff makes an excellent conch ceviche; it’s the perfect boat snack straight from the cooler on a hot day). The local beer is Belikin, a classic European continental lager, and rum is easy to find. Breakfast is a meal that truly shines at El Pescador, where arepas — ground maize dough with a savory filling — and breakfast burritos on homemade tortillas are tried-and-true favorites.

It’s worth the trip into San Pedro to experience more local food, if nothing else. The Belize Chocolate Company crafts artisanal chocolate using beans grown from small family farms, and even offers a chocolate-making class for the culinary-curious. The Farmhouse Market & Cafe is a go-to stop for coffee, smoothies and healthy local groceries, and Lavish Habit is another solid stop for coffee and cafe food.

Even if you never leave the El Pescador property except in a panga, you’ll find plenty of Belize hospitality right at the lodge. With the exception of Eben, the American lodge manager, the staff is local, friendly and one big family.

“Family” is a term thrown around often at lodges, and it’s been cheapened with overuse. But for the El Pescador staff, it’s often true both literally and figuratively — there are uncles, nieces, brothers, cousins and childhood friends working here. By the first evening at the lodge, the camaraderie is more than apparent, and it’s clear that the El Pescador family is indeed just that — a family. There’s laughter and teasing, friendly banter with staff and guests alike. It feel like a home.

And I can hardly think of a better fishing trip than going to visit family on the tropical waters of Ambergris Caye.

Inland trout fishing season preview from Brown County

by Eric Peterson, FOX 11 News

Haller Creek in Brown County, May 1, 2024 (WLUK/Eric Peterson)

BROWN COUNTY (WLUK) -- With 15,000 lakes and about 42,000 miles of rivers and streams to choose from, fishing is part of "How WI Live" in Wisconsin.

That also includes about 13,000 miles of certified trout streams.

The inland lakes sportfishing season begins Saturday.

At Tight Lines Fly Fishing Company in De Pere, store manager Pam Van Erem says the sport fishing season is always a busy time. Anglers are stocking up on supplies and gear Wednesday morning.

"A lot of people think fly fishing is only for trout. But, we also fly fish for smallmouth bass, musky, pike, pretty much anything that you can catch with regular spinning gear, you can catch on a fly rod," said Van Erem.

Van Erem says many will be testing their luck on Saturday.

As fishermen, and women head out for opening day, DNR Fisheries Management Program Bureau Director Justine Hasz says the trout population is relatively strong across Wisconsin.

"The brook and brown trout, populations that we have out there, are supported both by habitat restoration, rehabilitation, and protection, as well as natural reproduction. And this has been leading us to have overall trout numbers across the state at some of the highest levels we've seen in recent years," said Hasz.

Those who like to pursue trout, like Pam Van Erem, agree.

Send us pictures from your successful fishing trip once the season starts:

"This is a very active way to fish. You're usually standing in a stream. You're looking at pockets where the fish might hold. And you're constantly casting. You're thinking. You're moving your flies in either a way that's going to entice a strike, Something that that fish looking at says, this could be food. And I'm going to eat it," she said.

Van Erem says it's also helpful to brush up on the current fishing regulations, because bag limits and size restrictions may vary from water to water.
