Cycling is a great way to explore Norfolk & Suffolk, and when you add a beautiful rolling landscape and a network of quiet country lanes you the have the perfect place to get those pedals turning!

For the last 21 years our families have been cycling the byways, tracks and lanes of Norfolk & Suffolk, in the process we’ve discovered numerous ruined castles, deserted beaches, wonderful village inns, amazing children’s attractions and a wide collection of fascinating places to explore. And because we don’t have any serious hills in this lovely part of England everyone can cycle our routes – even if you’ve not been on a bike for years!

Using our own experiences we’ve developed a unique range of cycling tours that explore the very best bits of Norfolk and Suffolk. All our routes follow quiet country lanes to search out and discover a wealth of interesting places each day – you can also choose between different route options and while you travel ‘light’ on one of our modern touring bikes all your luggage is transported to your evening destination – usually a comfortable country hotel or a high quality bed and breakfast.

So whether you want a 2 day Family Adventure or a 6 day Coastal Exploration we’re sure we have something to suit – and don’t forget we’ve cycled all these routes ourselves so just give us a call if you want to discuss options or talk about any aspect of our tours.

Hoping to see you soon,

Martin, Phil, Mick and the UK Cycle Holiday Team

If you want to check availability, options, costs or have any other questions about our cycling breaks then please just give me a call or send me a note and I'll get back to you asap.

“ Thoroughly enjoyed the holiday, it was a really great experience with the cycling routes pitched exactly at the right level ”

Ian, Cheshire

“ Getting the Train to Diss worked well, only 90 mins from Liverpool Street then a pleasant country ride to a lovely little hotel. Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend without the Car for once ! ”

Richard, North London

“ The perfect balance between cycling and family attractions, we didn't have to cycle more than 1 hour before the Zoo, Steam Train or Dinosaur Park came into view... well thought out and great fun for kids ”

Wendy, Fersfield

“ The route plan was spot-on, we got to Southwold on lovely quiet country lanes and had all afternoon to explore the town... a downhill ride and a ferry crossing by rowing boat was a great way to arive at our hotel! ”

Mark, Cumbria

“ first time on a cycle for years...we really enjoyed the holiday and would definately recommend it to others, we will be back next year ”

Sue, Sussex

“ I tested your Coastal Explorer Tour with a couple of friends and can honestly say it’s a brilliant way to discover North Norfolk. Your suggested route took us through some perfect cycling countryside offering loads of interesting places to visit ”

John, London

“ At the end of fantastic days cycling we stayed at a lovely country hotel, the food was superb and the room very comfortable…it's obvious you've developed the perfect recipe for fun and relaxing cycling holidays ”

Netti, London

“ Thanks for arranging a great cycle tour, all of our group had a brilliant time even though 3 of us had never been on a bike for over 5 years….the scenery was spectacular, the bikes comfortable and the pubs brilliant! ”

Liz, Cockermouth

“ Last year we did the Coast to Coast ride but this time we wanted to do something a bit more relaxing. So a trip around East Anglian Castles was just perfect...very well done for putting together our route at such short notice ”

Nick, Winchester

“ Last year we got stuck at the airport for hours so as a family we decided to reduce the hassle and holiday nearer home.... the kids also wanted a 'green' holiday so your Safari Tour was exactly what we needed. ”

Amanda, Horsham

“ Undoubtedly Norfolk is at it's best when explored by bike, it just gives you time to stop at all the places you miss when in the car. Our only regret was that we hadn't arranged a longer tour…can we come back next month ! ”

Geoff, Great Dunmow

“ I've cycled many parts of the UK but it was the first cycling holiday for my wife. Although she was a little nervous at first your advice and support allowed us to have a really excellent long weekend in a beautiful part of Suffolk…. Many Thanks ”

Paul, Leicestershire

Nick, Winchester - Bespoke tour for some special friends

“ Just a note to say thanks to Phil and Martin for arranging our cycle trip at such short notice. Everything was taken care of and despite two days of wet weather we had a wonderful week – the hotels were excellent:- good food, comfortable and friendly ”

Rodney, York

“ Many thanks for arranging our weekend cycling tour, both the Hotel and B & B were top class and your route notes took us to places well off the beaten track. Climbing up a working windmill and the seal trip are both to be recommended ”

C elebrating 14 Years  of  Land's End to John O'Groats  tours in  2024!

What our customers say:

Only one word to describe the tour, leaders and organisation…FABULOUS! Hamish and Niv were very thoughtful regarding the group’s needs and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to all – would book again with you and hope to in the future.

Very well organised and all of the information provided in advance. I had questions that were answered really quickly. This was my 3rd trip with Peak Tours.

Great tour, well organised. Our guides Niv and Hamish were first class.

Loved the days through the hills in Bavaria.

The route was excellent. Really enjoyed the scenery, especially Dartmoor, The lakes and Cairngorms. Lots of quiet country lanes, mostly traffic free. The size of the group was just right and enabled smaller groups to be formed, so people could ride at their own pace.

All of our Guided Cycling Holidays include accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, route notes and tour information, certificate and full tour support which includes at least one experienced guide who will act as bike mechanic, tour guide and will provide luggage transfers, brew stops and  help to organise evening meals etc. Generally most tours have three guides with two back up vans and a guide who cycles with the group. Most groups are made up of singles and couples or twins (two friends together). The minimum number is eight and the maximum 25.

With the Self Led Cycling Holidays we provide detailed route notes, maps, accommodation, luggage transfers, tour information pack plus bikes and all necessary equipment. You aren’t part of a group so can go at your own pace and you choose exactly which date you would like to travel.

Short Tours

With the Guided Cycling Holidays , starting with our shorter tours, we have the traditional Coast to Coast route from Workington to Tynemouth which goes from the Irish sea to the North sea from one side of England to the other. There are many “sea to sea” routes available and we also provide the stunning Way of the Roses tour from Morecambe to Bridlington through the Yorkshire Dales as well as the Hadrians Cycleway tour taking in the best of the Solway Coast and Cumbria . All three routes have their own charms and level of difficulty and traverse the Pennines or Northumberland which passes through some cracking scenery.

One Week Tours

New for 2018 were the introduction of two hugely popular 7 day tours.  The Classic Cols tour and A Week in Provence . The Classic Cols tour takes in some of the most spectacular climbs that the French Alps have to offer. The Telegraphe, Madeleine, Galibier and Alpe d’Huez to name but a few. The mileages short and the climbs and descents long, this is equally a spectacular introduction into alpine riding or a chance for seasoned climbers to have a full supported play on the slopes of some of the most (in)famous climbs in the cycling world.

A Week in Provence is designed to take in many of Provence’s highlights whilst also allowing time for relaxation and exploration if desired. We stay in each location for two nights, with a loop ride planned on the second day which you can always opt out of if you choose to relax in the sunshine or explore instead! Mt Ventoux  looms large on the agenda for the final day and anyone who wishes to attempt the climb will be fully supported as always by our guides and the magic brew van.

Longer Tours

If you want a bit of a longer challenge then our Mizen Head to Malin Head cycling holiday takes you from the most southerly point in Ireland at Mizen Head to the most northerly point in Ireland at Malin Head travelling along the stunning west coast of Ireland from south to north in ten days of rugged, magical touring along the best cycle routes this amazingly friendly country has to offer.

Our iconic Land’s End to John O’Groats or LEJOG tour can be taken over 14 days which is a challenge in itself but for those who would like a tougher challenge we also offer a 10 day Land’s End to John O’Groats tour which is not for the faint-hearted.  This classic tour is one we are extremely proud of and our fantastic route through the best of the British countryside and our customer testimonials speak for themselves.

Our epic Dover to Durness cycling holiday provides a refreshingly different perspective to the UK than on our LEJOG tour as you cycle from the south east of England to the north west of Scotland in some of the UK’s most dramatic scenery. The Dover to Durness tour is similar in length to the LEJOG tour but a bit harder as there are more hills along the way.  The reward for the extra effort on this adventure is simply some of the best cycling in the whole country, as we explore The Kentish Downs, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, The Peak District, The Yorkshire Dales, Dumfrieshire, the Scottish islands of Arran, Mull and Skye and on up the west coast of Scotland to a beautiful last few days in cycling heaven.

The Channel to the Med tour is our ridiculously popular French end to end cycling holiday which takes you through some of that country’s most stunning scenery along quiet country lanes and through picturesque towns and villages. From bucolic ancient villages, around the lazy Loire, through volcanic landscapes, old Roman settlements, “The Giant of Provence” Mt Ventoux, and the breathtaking Gorge de Verdon.  The Channel to the Med tour is stunning to say the least and, although a different kind of cycling on less steep roads than some we use in Britain, it is similar to our LEJOG tour in terms of difficulty. We also offer this tour in a 10 Day version for those looking to increase the physical challenge that little bit further!

Munich to Rome  is our latest addition to the 2 week tour family and we love it! The first few days of winding through the Tyrolean mountains take us into Austria and then Switzerland before crossing into Italy and heading south taking in yet more stunning scenery, fantastic food and beautiful architecture. We then work our way slowly further south, crossing the length of Lake Garda on a ferry and heading towards our rest day in Siena, one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in the world.  We continue on to finish the ride in Rome,  surrounded by breathtaking buildings, fantastic food and more cultural heritage than you could shake a large Roman stick at.

If you want something a bit more relaxing then we have our Germany & Austria Cycling Holiday or Moselle to Mozart tour . Germany is very underrated but makes a superb destination for cycling with miles of traffic free cyclepaths, stunning architecture and amazing scenery. The tour starts on the west side of southern Germany and finishes on the east side of Austria in Vienna passing through the UNESCO world heritage site of the “Wachau”, the wonderfully well preserved buildings of Bernkastel-Kues and the impressive, imposing, monastery at Melk to name but a few.

Cycle Touring the UK – So Much to Discover…

Considering a holiday or short break cycling in england.

Self-guided and fully supported cycling holidays in England, ranging from 2 to 14 night bike tours are on offer through our dedicated programme at Cycle Breaks. We pride ourselves on a high level of personal service and a great variety of inspiring holiday destinations in the UK. We offer well-researched routes coupled with accommodation chosen by ourselves from a cyclist’s perspective all packed with plenty of places to get a taste of real local flavours along the way.

In England, our cycling tours include opportunities to explore the beautiful coast and countryside of Suffolk and Norfolk in the ancient kingdom of East Anglia, situated within easy reach of London and just 90 miles north east of the capital.

Why cycling holidays in England?

Whether travelling into the UK by plane or ferry or choosing a holiday ‘at home’ for a change, heading out on a gentle cycling adventure in England is a great way to experience – or re-experience – the English coast and countryside. On a bike, the real England and its quirky charms become so much more immediate and the great skies of Suffolk in particular have a special way of putting everything into perspective.

Only a short car journey or train ride out of London and its airports or from the Midlands, Suffolk and Norfolk are easily accessible. With reduced travel times, there’s no question of taking any hours out of your break, and on the day you arrive at your first hotel, you can start exploring immediately. Whether you’ve got just a small weekend window or the luxury of a week away, a cycling break is a perfect way to unwind and enjoy some ‘breathe-in’ space.

England bike tours.

A visit to England offers a glimpse at its history and traditions through ancient villages, medieval castles, prehistoric structures and leading museums. Such history is set alongside the vibrant British culture, making it one of the most diverse places in the world.

While London attracts millions of visitors each year, cyclists treasure natural diversity beyond the city. Pedal through lovely meadows, hills and lakes dotted with quaint villages.

England also boasts coastal areas with cliffs and charming seaside villages. The rolling hills and a yearlong mild climate also make England a prime cycling destination.

“This was a life-changing experience...my first bicycle tour and my first time in either country. It was, in a word, amazing. A totally unique experience. Can't wait to do my next one!”

UK Cycling Holidays Highlights

  • Hadrian's Wall -  Cycle across the breadth of England visiting some of Europe's largest surviving Roman monument, Hadrian's Wall, along the way. Mix cycling with history as you pedal along quiet roads, rolling through stunning scenery, and stopping at Birdoswald to explore the ruins of a well-preserved Roman fort. Explore charming villages in South Tyne Valley, then climb up to the vast archaeological site of Vindolanda and stay overnight in Corbridge, whose nearby ruins were once an old Roman garrison town.
  • Tyne Valley - The meandering Tyne River gently flows through the grassy meadows of the Tyne Valley in Northern England. Pedal past grazing cattle as you cycle along Hadrian's Wall and take in panoramic views across the wild, windswept countryside. The riverside cycle path leads us through the heart of Newscastle and out to the golden sands of the North Sea coast at King Edward's Bay where we end our four-day ride across the width of England under the shadow of Tynemouth Castle on the headland.
  • North Devon - Take in the fresh sea breeze and vast ocean views as we cycle the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This section of the coast combines picturesque woodland with rocky cliffs, bringing us to the heart of nature as we Cycle Devon .

Customer Reviews

We have had a great trip cycling around Rhode Island. We loved Kalarvarda, nice empty roads, nice restaurants along the beach and a nice little cafe in the market square. The B&B was in a lovely location and w were given a room with a balcony which was a nice touch. In Rhodes, the B&B gave us their best room with private balcony, which was a nice touch, good location and very nice historic setting. (Oct 2020)

Just a quick note to say THANKS! I’m wrapping up in Pitlochry, heading for lunch after my morning ride. It was a truly spectacular week. Plenty of challenges on the longer, more rugged rides, and thrilling scenery everywhere. I also had really great weather. Cool breezes, (occasional) blasting sun, and (occasional) drops of rain. It was a trip two years in the making, and it was worth the wait. Thanks for your help and patience. (2022)

All 3 hotels were comfortable and welcoming. The route finding notes were very well laid out and easy to use. Thanks to you and your colleagues for your organization of the holiday, and we would certainly consider your company again for similar holidays. (Jan 2020)

Cycling Holidays UK

Some of the best cycling in Europe can be found in the UK, a diverse country with fascinating history, multi-cultural cities and beautiful countryside offering lush greenery, fields, woodlands and forest, coastline, rivers, lakes, hills and mountains. Whether it’s challenging hilly terrain, or flat riding, there is something to please all cycling enthusiasts.

The UK is rich in history, littered with numerous castles, historical towns and cities, building and ruins, dating back over the centuries as far back as Roman times.

Our Coast and Castles holidays was designed especially for those with an interest in historical castles and beautiful scenery. The route takes riders from Edinburgh to Newcastle, visiting various castles and vast stretches of unspoilt coastline.

End to Ends

Land’s end to john o’groats.

The UK’s famous end to end traverses the length of the country, a fantastic challenge for fit cyclists of approximately 1000 miles, starting in Cornwall then continuing across Dartmouth, around Bristol and into the Midlands, up to the North of the UK and into Southern Scotland heading up through the Highlands until reaching the final destination of John O’Groats.

WALES END TO END

Beginning in the vibrant south Wales city of Cardiff, cyclists travel all the way to the magnificent Conway Castle in North Wales via the beautiful Brecon Beacons, Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia enjoying exceptional views throughout.

Idyllic Countryside

The beauty of the British countryside can be fully appreciated when travelling on two wheels. Our Tour de East Anglia offers enjoyable flat riding around the counties of Suffolk and Norfolk – riders can appreciate the peaceful nature of the region as well as soaking up the delightful scenery.

The circumnavigation of London provides an opportunity for cyclists to leave the hustle and bustle of urban London and explore London’s greenbelt along surprisingly quiet minor roads enjoying unspoilt countryside.

Further north another fantastic side to side takes riders along a 170 mile journey from coast to coast – exploring the incredible scenery and landscape of the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park amongst other delights.

Perhaps it’s your first time cycling abroad or you’re inspired by the Tour de France climbs but want a bit of back-up in place should your bike (or legs!) give up part way through.

Once you’ve decided an organised cycling holiday/small group tour is the way to go, choosing the best bicycle tour company for your needs is imperative. Yet with so many companies out there, it can also be quite difficult!

With that in mind, in this article we share the most important things to think about when choosing a road bike tour company to holiday with.

1. The basics – Where do you want to go and how much will it cost?

Different cycling tour companies cover different parts of the world and so the first thing to think about is where exactly you want to go. Do you fancy the challenging climbs of the Alps and the accompanying reward of stunning mountain views? Or perhaps you’d prefer a more reliably sunny climate like Spain where you can spend a bit of time relaxing on the beach too?

Your first step should be to choose a destination, or at least narrow if down to the type of destination you fancy exploring on your bike.

For inspiration, take a look at all the cycling destinations we’ve written about, here , or our article on the best cycling destinations in Europe and the best cycling weekend destinations in Europe may be useful.

Once you’ve decided where, compare some different tours. Think about the price (and what’s included/excluded for that) and deposit. Also consider the cancellation, policy and any single supplements.

2. What kind of cycling holiday do you want?

There’s a bike holiday to suit every cyclist, from gran fondo and cyclo sportive events to relaxed cycling tours with an emphasis on sightseeing.

You’ll need to decide how long you want to spend in the saddle and how long you want to spend exploring the history, culture and gastronomy of the places you visit to find the best type of road bike holiday for you.

Think about your own fitness level and the distances you want to cover each day. Whilst a tour that includes 150 km and several big climbs each day might sound fantastic on paper, if you’re not fit enough for it, you’ll soon come to regret your decision! Don’t just focus on distance each day, the elevation profiles are extremely important. Companies use terms like “beginner”, “leisure”, “advanced” and “avid” and each company has a slightly different ranking system, so if you’re worried dig for more detail!

3. How many days riding to you want?

Guided bike tours range from weekend trips to tours covering two weeks or more. Whilst some tours cover less than 50km of flat ground per day, more challenging tours might cover more like 100 miles a day and much more hilly terrain.

Pay close attention to the number of actual riding days your tour operator is offering. For example, it may be advertised as a six day trip but days one and two are more than likely going to be spent arriving and departing. Will there be a rest day in the middle? How many days actual biking will there be?

Talking of rest days, we all know they’re important to give our bodies a chance to recover. But depending on the length of the trip, your objectives and the number of riding days you’re looking for, you might want to delve into the detail of the rest days. Are there enough? Are there too many?! (In which case, check whether there’s an option to still ride on the rest day if you want to). Do they seem sensibly spaced out?

4. Are the reviews positive?

Checking out supported bike tour reviews should be a vital step before you commit to booking any cycling holiday. A great site to use is Stridetravel, which has collated a whole host of reviews from fellow cyclists who have scored the popular road cycling holiday companies on value, guides, activities, lodging, transportation and meals.

It’s worth also checking TripAdvisor, Trust Pilot and Google reviews to make sure that other cyclists recommend the tour and haven’t been left disappointed for any reason.

You may well get a good sense of how clients have been treated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Reviews may mention how tour operators have behaved and what their policies have been on returning monies paid for trips that could not go ahead.

5. The best bike tour companies will be super helpful – is yours?

A good road bike tour company should be available and willing to answer all your questions before you book. If you have to wait for days after sending an email enquiry, or they never answer the phone/return your calls, you should probably look for an alternative company.

If you have particular cycling tour in mind, ask the tour company how many years the trip has run for, so that you can be sure that they are experienced in that particular destination and the trip is well-planned out. Do you really want to be guinea pig?!

You could also see if there’s an  Epic Road Rides guide to the destination and swot up on any particular must-do rides. If the tour company is good at their job, they’ll be able to engage with you in a sensible and knowledgeable conversation about those rides.

6. Are they legit?!

This might sound boring, but in fact it’s a really important point: does the business you’re entrusting your holiday to comply with all the proper rules and regulations?

Do they have a right to run tours in the country they’re operating in? For example, if you’re using a British-based business to go on a holiday in a European country, there is a whole heap of new regulation they have to comply with. If they’re not fully complying, it could affect your holiday (for example if they don’t have the right visa and work permit, your British tour guide might be refused entry at the border).

Do they have liability insurance?

Are they bonded (e.g. via ABTA) or do they have financial failure insurance?

Do they train their guides in guiding, customer service and first aid?

These might be the kind of things you assume every business does/complies with, but it’s surprising how many stories we hear of cycling tour operators that aren’t playing it entirely straight.

Motto of the story: if you’re not sure, ask!

7. Will the bike tour guide be any good?

In our experience, a good tour guide is a vital cog in the workings of a successful cycle holiday. Ideally, you’ll want a guide who speaks English as well as the local language of the country you’re exploring and has a good local knowledge to teach you about the culture and traditions of your destination.

Ask the bike tour company who the guide will be. Whilst some companies have their own in-house guides, others sub-contract these roles so may be less aware of what the guide is like and whether they’re properly trained and experienced.

You could ask the company whether it trains its guides and/or requires they have any formal qualifications in guiding and first aid.

It’s important to make sure that the bike tour company is willing to answer any questions you have about your tour guide and is confident in their abilities. If you’re particularly experienced, you might also want to check with the company regarding the guide’s skill and fitness level, to check they’re up to the task of keeping up with you! You could even ask for references for some extra reassurance.

The best bike tour companies will have excellent guides

8. Who will be in the group?

Think about the demographics of your group and try to book a tour with like-minded cyclists if you can.

If you’re a solo traveller, you might prefer to book a specialist singles cycling holiday. A group bike tour for solo cyclists can be particularly good in the evenings, as others will be less likely to go off and do their own thing leaving you on your own!

There are women-only cycling holidays if that’s your thing, or some tours might be more popular with couples or families.

9. How big is the group?

You should check what the guide-to-guest ratio is for your bicycle tour. With six guests per guide, you can be confident of getting all the attention you need. Any more than fifteen guests makes it virtually impossible for the guide to keep track of you all, and you’ll likely end up on a self-guided trip, which can be a very frustrating experience.

Smaller groups are generally better as you’ll enjoy a more tailored adventure. It may also allow the option to choose whether you want to do longer or shorter days/extra diversions depending on how you’re all feeling.

As well as the guide-to-guest ratio, check up on the number of other support crew – will there be a broom wagon at the back of the group? Will there be a mechanic and someone experienced in first aid (more on this below)?

10. How much roadside support will there be?

For complete peace of mind, look for bicycle tour companies that offer full roadside support with a fully-equipped back-up vehicle. A support vehicle offers the reassurance that, should you seize up and not be able to make it all the way, you and your bike always have a way to get back to the hotel. It’s also a handy place to keep your extra clothing, leg and arm warmers, sun cream, cameras and any other paraphernalia. And, of course, lots of snacks!

The best support car drivers are qualified first-aiders and also competent bike mechanics (or there are additional staff with these kills).

Whilst you’ll probably have no problem with simple tasks like mending a puncture on your own, having a dedicated bike mechanic in the support car can be a godsend should something more serious happen to your bike and you need some mechanical assistance.

Mechanical assistance with bicycles

11. What will the food and accommodation be like?

Is a luxury hotel important to you, or would you be more comfortable in cheap and cheerful lodgings? Don’t waste money on cycling holiday with luxury accommodation if you’d be just as happy in a clean but basic room.

If you have any special dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free, be sure to check that these can be catered for, both in the hotel and with the roadside food options. In some countries, even seemingly easy dietary requirements like being a vegetarian, might not be a foregone conclusion!

On a cycling holiday, you’ll burn through a lot of calories while riding. Check whether the tour includes roadside snacks or whether you’re expected to provide them yourself.

12. What are the extra costs?

When deciding on the best cycling tour companies, you should work out what’s included in the fee you pay upfront, and what’s an extra cost. The cheapest cycling holidays might not offer the best value if you’re expected to pay for extras such as bike hire, entry into attractions, tips and food/drinks.

Most cycling holidays are priced without flights and transfers so you’ll need to factor those costs in. If you’re taking your bike too, rather than hiring, remember to add on any extra baggage charges and extra transfer costs.

European cycling holidays will obviously be cheaper than tours of far-flung destinations in South Africa, Asia, New Zealand or North America. However, even within Europe there can be huge differences in the cost of flights ( this is a useful article with loads of tips on how to find cheap flights ). It’s important to look up the cost of flights from your local airport when working out the total cost of various cycling holidays and deciding which offers the best value.

13. Is the tour guaranteed to go ahead?

Each bike tour will need a minimum number of cyclist to go ahead. If you book a tour which isn’t yet guaranteed, there’s a chance that it will be cancelled if not enough cyclists join the trip. To avoid this, you could look for tours with ‘guaranteed departures’, which have already reached the minimum numbers.

It’s not recommended to book your flights/travel for a cycling trip which isn’t yet guaranteed, as you may lose money if it’s cancelled and you have to change your flights. Flights are often cheaper the further in advance you can book them, so a cycling tour which has guaranteed numbers even several months before departure is a solid bet.

If, for whatever reason, you end up needing to book travel etc around an unconfirmed trip,  check your travel insurance to ensure you’re covered if the trip doesn’t go ahead. Otherwise, be prepared to take the risk!

14. Are there any alternatives?

This article has focused on traditional cycling tour companies, the kind that offer guided and/or self-guided trips and as a minimum are happy to arrange your accommodation, luggage transfer, routes as well as provide back-up in case of emergency.

However, this does come with a price tag. For those looking for a more cost-effective alternative, there are other solutions.

Organising your own holiday is the obvious way to reduce the cost of a trip. You’re on your own, but that might appeal! (And of course our site has tons of information to try and help anyone wanting to arrange their own trip.)

Stay at a cycle-friendly hotel

Cycle-friendly hotels often offer a myriad of services in addition to somewhere to rest your head. Of course, it depends on the hotel, but pick the right one and you should find someone who can help you arrange things like bike hire, guiding and mechanical support.

We’ve tried to take the hard work out of this – head to our accommodation page to find our picks of the best places to stay in various destinations.

“Guide only”

Another alternative is to go “guide only”. “Guide only” is a term we use for what tends to be an independent guide offering a no-frills service to cyclists that want a day or two of riding with someone who’s there to show them the way and keep them company. It’s a bit like riding with a (paid!) friend.

The details of what “guide only” means in practice varies from guide to guide.

  • You shouldn’t assume they have things like an official business operator license, training or insurance; in our experience, they normally won’t.
  • Usually, the guide will provide you with a route and ride with you, but any extras on top of that will be on a case-by-case basis.
  • If you want to make sure they offer a particular service or have particular expertise or qualifications, check with them before you book.

While the unregulated nature of these kinds of informal guides may be a deal-breaker for some cyclists, there are positives:

  • Low overheads mean they tend to offer an attractive price.
  • These kind of guides tend to be local cyclists living in the area – and so they should know the rides well and be able to share lots of local knowledge with you.
  • For many offering this kind of informal, independent guiding, it is an additional source of income alongside their day job. As a result, they are usually pretty flexible on dates and the number of days guiding they offer.

These kinds of guide reach out to us quite frequently. We probably won’t have tried their services ourselves, but if we know someone in the location you want to visit, we’re happy to put you in touch so you can ask your questions direct to them and decide if they’re for you. Drop us a line if you would like us to put you in touch with someone on a “guide only” basis.

15. Are they eco-friendly?

Given the importance of climate change, arguably this should be number 1 on your list! If it’s something you care about, you should definitely look into this. Don’t assume all cycling holidays are eco-friendly holidays – they’re not. We’ve written a whole article on how to have an eco-friendly cycling trip, here.

The reliability of our suitcases being delivered correctly and before arrival allowed so much more time to concentrate on our day ahead. Your choice of accommodation for our group of four was an unexpected delight upon every arrival. The proprietors were welcoming and cordial. I can't say enough about the quality outcome of services and dependability.

Our trip to the Isle of Wight was fantastic. We enjoyed every minute of it. The itinerary was clear and easy to follow, most of the accommodation was superb and the meals were excellent. The service that you provided to us was second to none. We have already recommended you to our friends and will definitely book with you again and I hope that you personally will arrange it.

L. Wheeldon NSW, Australia

The Dales Way walk was beautiful. The accommodation excellent. We had rain on 2 of the days but one should expect that in the Lake District. With appropriate gear this isn’t a problem and certainly didn’t distract from our enjoyment.

G. Goodwin NSW, Australia

Had a wonderful time. Weather was spectacular. Accommodations varied from good to great. Missed the mark on the special food needs for a person in our group but all was worked out. Would suggest taking 1-2 rest days to break the walk up.

This classic Coast to Coast walking route across England was originated and described by Alfred Wainwright, author of a well-known series of mountain-walking guidebooks on the Lake District. The walk starts on the Irish Sea coast of Cumbria near the huge red sandstone cliffs of St. Bees Head. You cross three National Parks before reaching the North Sea at the pretty fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay on the rocky coastline of the North York Moors. - Find comprehensive self-guided and guided walking tours with Walkers' Britain: https://www.walkersbritain.co.uk/united-kingdom/coast-to-coast-walk Tradition has it that you dip your boots in the Irish Sea and take a pebble to deposit in the North Sea at the end of your Coast to Coast walk. That should confuse geologists a few thousand years hence. The first few days take you over some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain of the Lake District by way of the idyllic lakeland valleys of Borrowdale, Grasmere (Wordsworth lived here) and Patterdale, close to Ullswater Lake. You pass Helvellyn, England’s most popular mountain, and the mountain oddly named High Street, along which the Roman Legions marched on their way to Hadrian’s Wall. After leaving the Lake District you cross a gentler landscape round Shap and Orton. Beyond the quaint market town of Kirkby Stephen you enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Two days are then spent walking through the long valley of Swaledale, with its dry stone walls and unspoilt villages. You reach the historic town of Richmond with cobbled streets, sloping market square and famous castle perched above the River Swale. Beyond the arable farmland of the Vale of York, you ascend onto the heather moorlands of the North York Moors, a region of long vistas and easy walking. After crossing the wooded valley of Eskdale you reach the dramatic cliffs of the North Sea Coast. The last few miles of the Coast to Coast walk follow the scenic clifftop path to the red-roofed village of Robin Hood’s Bay. With an extra night here, you can relax on the beach or visit nearby Whitby with its ruined abbey (associated with the Dracula legend) and its Captain Cook Museum. - Find comprehensive self-guided and guided walking tours with Walkers' Britain: https://www.walkersbritain.co.uk/united-kingdom/coast-to-coast-walk #coasttocoast #wainwrightsway #england

Great tour of East London, our guide Connor was fantastic!

Brilliant way to see highlights of London!

What a fun tour! Our guide Olly was fantastic and very knowledgeable about the sites + history of London. He also had a fun delivery, A+ acting chops! Had time to stop for pictures and to grab a snack or souvenir at certain markets. Found it a great active way to see the city and highly recommend Olly as the guide!

My family really enjoyed the tour

My family really enjoyed the tour. It was fun to pedal through London and see so many different things we had not seen through bus and walking tours. Conor was an awesome guide. We appreciated his enthusiasm for the job!

5 star Bicycle Tour - A great way to see London

Fab way to see the landmarks around London. Our guide was Dom, and the tour was excellent. Dom has a great knowledge of the area and history and delivered the details in a entertaining and fun manner. Really enjoyed the experience.

Great way to see London!

This was a great experience for my family! It was so fun for our family to see so much of London in just 3 hours. I would HIGHLY recommend using this company, they are very professional and actually give you explanations of things. It was a very different experience from the Fat Bike tour we had done in Paris, that was not a very good experience. This company cares about your safety and well being. They don't leave you behind, and go your pace. I have an 11 and 14 year old that both had a great time seeing London.

Awesome bike tour

Absolutely loved this bike tour. I was with my 15 year old granddaughter and I am in my mid 60's. Great way to see the London. Nani was the best guide. Very informative and made sure the group stayed together. Would definitely do this tour again if I come back to London.

Excellent tour and tour guide

The tour was amazing. Our tour guide Dom from Dublin was fantastic. Funny and had lots of interesting information. Would highly recommend this tour

we had a very nice tour in London

Once again (for the third time now, the first ten years ago) we had a very nice tour in London. Guide Arno guided us (12 Dutch people) through London in a very pleasant way. Seen a lot and returned satisfied after 3.5 hours. My wife and I do Baja bike tours everywhere we go, from Beijing to Sao Paulo and from Toronto to Berlin. We have never been disappointed!

Wonderful love London tour

Great tour! We had Ollie as our tour guide. We would definitely recommend this tour and ask for Olly! He is knowledgeable and we stopped many times for pictures and information! What a great way to see a lot of London in a short time!

We enjoyed the bike tour on our first day in London!

We enjoyed the bike tour on our first day in London! Nani showed us many of the most popular attractions and gave us tips for our stay in London. So much fun!
