Introducing AI Time Machine™: Transform Yourself Into a Historical Figure Using Everyday Photos!

Introducing AI Time Machine™: Transform Yourself Into a Historical Figure Using Everyday Photos!

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time? While we haven’t perfected time travel, we’ve done the next best thing: on MyHeritage you can now see how you might’ve looked as a historical figure throughout the ages!

We’re excited to announce the release of AI Time Machine™, a groundbreaking and fun new feature that enables you to transform everyday personal photos into hyper-realistic images of yourself as a historical figure.

Imagine the most incredible costume you’ve ever seen. Every detail is perfect, and it looks and feels authentic. What you get with AI Time Machine™ is even better: stunning, seamless images of yourself or a loved one as an ancient Greek warrior, an Egyptian pharaoh, a Victorian lady, or an astronaut in space. There are dozens of iconic historical figures to choose from. You have to see it to believe it!

Take AI Time Machine™ for a spin

Over the past 3 years MyHeritage has launched a suite of robust features that leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring historical photos to life. AI Time Machine™ is a new twist on this theme, inviting you to travel to the past and see yourself as you might have looked at the time of your ancestors. The results are mind-blowing and perfect for sharing on social media and using as your profile photo.

At MyHeritage, our commitment to developing new tools that help users further their family history research is stronger than ever. We also love creating fun features like AI Time Machine™ that increase public interest in history in general and family history in particular, and introduce new audiences to the fascinating world of genealogy.

How it works

AI Time Machine™ uses text-to-image Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to create photorealistic images of a person as he or she may have looked in different periods in history. It is based on a deep learning, text-to-image model and personalization technology licensed by MyHeritage from Astria, an innovative company specializing in tailor-made AI image generation. Using anywhere between 10 and 25 photos of one person, AI Time Machine™ constructs a model of that person in a variety of poses and settings that are different from the original input photos. Then, using any of the predefined themes set in different historical eras, it synthesizes the model with the theme to craft stunning images of a person cast as a historical figure. Ever wondered what you would’ve looked like if you’d lived in ancient Greece or during the French Renaissance? Find out with AI Time Machine™ !

AI Time Machine™ currently offers dozens of themes representing different historical eras, from prehistoric times to 21 st century outer space. When using the feature for the first time, the first few themes will be selected for you automatically. Once the first batch of images is ready, you can select additional themes that you find interesting and create more images.

The output of AI Time Machine™ is a series of 8 images for each theme. You can download and share a collage with all 8 images, or share each image individually.

As you can see below, the results are mind-blowing, and you and millions of other users on MyHeritage are going to have a lot of fun with AI Time Machine™!

Click the “Try it now” button to get started.

On the next screen you’ll see guidelines for selecting photos to upload. Follow the guidelines to help the AI technology achieve optimal results. You’ll need between 10 to 25 photos of the same individual, taken on different days and in a variety of settings, poses, and angles. The more photos you upload, the better the results will be. You can upload up to 35. Note that uploading photos of the person at different ages is generally not a good idea, because it negatively affects the ability of the technology to build a consistent model of the person.

Upload the photos from your computer or mobile phone, or drag and drop them into the frame.

If you don’t have enough existing photos to use on your computer, simply snap a few more with the camera on your mobile device. Use different poses and backgrounds, then upload the photos.

If you appear in some of the photos with another person in the foreground, crop the photos first so that only you will appear.

As a tip, you can easily find photos of yourself on an iOS device by tapping People & Places under Albums in the Photos app and selecting yourself. You can then add all the photos that you want to a temporary album, and upload photos from that album to the AI Time Machine™ page. Other photo apps, such as Google Photos, have a similar function.

Useful tips

The quality of the output you’ll receive depends very much on the quality of the photos you upload. The more photos you upload and the more varied they are, the better your results will be. For best results, use existing photos from your camera roll or computer that include:

  • Singularity: Only one person (and always the same person)
  • Variety: At least 3 full body shots, 5 upper body shots (from the chest up), and 10 close-ups
  • Different poses and expressions, with the eyes looking in different directions
  • Different backgrounds and lighting conditions
  • Photos taken on different days
  • Avoid makeup. It can affect the results negatively, so photos with minimal to no makeup are recommended
  • Avoid sunglasses, hats, or other accessories and items that obscure the face

Authenticity

While highly realistic, images generated by AI Time Machine™ are created by artificial intelligence; they are not authentic photographs. As per MyHeritage’s commitment to responsible AI, watermarks are added to all images generated by AI to distinguish them from authentic photos.

Watermark for AI-generated images (click to zoom)

Watermark for AI-generated images (click to zoom)

You can view the images you create with AI Time Machine™ by clicking the link in the email notifying you that your results are ready. We’ll soon add a designated private album for AI Time Machine™ images to the My Photos section of your MyHeritage family site.

When creating images with AI Time Machine™, your privacy is protected. The images are processed exclusively on MyHeritage servers and are not shared with any third party. MyHeritage doesn’t own the resulting images; they belong to you, just like all photos you upload to MyHeritage.

AI Time Machine™ is currently available on the MyHeritage website and via mobile web browser. The feature is free at launch for a limited introductory period (with a limit of one model and 20 themes per user, for a total of 160 images), following which it will become a paid feature. A one-time purchase will then allow you to upload photos to create a model of one person and generate 160 images with up to 20 themes. Users with a MyHeritage Complete plan will enjoy a higher usage quota at no additional cost; details about the quota will be announced soon.

Responsibility

With great power comes great responsibility. You are kindly requested, and firmly required, to use AI Time Machine™ responsibly. Do not upload photos of people other than you, unless you received their permission beforehand. Do not upload photos of children, photos with nudity, or photos that are offensive. No photos of Nazis. Do not use AI Time Machine™ to make fun of politicians – keep Putin, Biden, Trump, and other politicians out of this. Do not share results that may humiliate or offend anyone. Do not remove the AI symbol from the corner of the resulting photos. If any of the results ends up having the potential to offend anyone, do not share it. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

At MyHeritage, we’re constantly innovating new ways to make family history fun for all, from seasoned genealogists to newcomers seeking a sense of nostalgia. Until now our photo tools have brought the past into the present, and with AI Time Machine™ we’re taking the present on a playful journey back in time, delivering yet another exciting way to connect with the past. If you’re wondering “what will they think of next,” stay tuned. As always, there’s more to come, so watch this space!

You can use an AI Time Machine to see what you'd look like in different eras throughout history

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

In a recent TikTok trend that has garnered over 30 million views, people are sharing realistic AI-generated photos of what they would have looked like throughout different time periods in history. You can join in on the fun, too – for free.

The photos are generated by an " AI Time Machine ," created by genealogy company MyHeritage. As of Monday, the company generated 44 million output images, out of which three million were downloaded for sharing, according to MyHeritage .

The website takes a number of photos you upload and by using text-to-image technology based on Stable Diffusion, constructs a model that is used to depict a person in a variety of poses and different lighting, according to the site.

Also:   How to use DALL•E 2 to turn your wildest imaginations into tangible art

It then uses the themes on the site to apply the proper conditions to the model to create a hyper-realistic photo of what someone looks like in a certain time period.

The images can include 20th century staples such as a 1920s flapper, a 1930s Hollywood star, or a 1970s hippie. You can also go way back in time and choose to be depicted as a Viking, Roman, Mayan, world explorer, 16th century royalty, and more.

Some MyHeritage AI renderings of myself in different eras and heritages: Saxon, Ancient Greek, Persian queen, French Royalty, 18th century bride, and Rembrandt portrait (top left to bottom right).

To give it a try, all you have to do is visit the MyHeritage website and click on the "Try it now for free" button. If you get to this page and you see a button that says, "Try it now," that means the window for free renderings has closed and you will be required to pay a $12 fee to have your photos generated. However, there is a workaround.

If you really want to try this AI model, but don't want to pay the fee, just visit the page at different times of the day and wait until the button reads, "Try it now for free" again.

To render my own images, I first checked Tuesday night at around 4pm and the site was charging $12. I then tried again on Wednesday morning at 8am and the button read "free" again.

You will then be asked to submit 10 to 25 photos of yourself at different angles to generate the most accurate photo possible. Once the photos are submitted, it will take another 30 to 90 minutes to create the model and then you will receive an email once it is ready.

When you get the email, you can select the themes you want it to generate, and it will take one to two minutes to render the results. Beware: some photos will leave you stunned, while others will leave much to be desired.

I submitted 10 photos and did not upload photos of my profile as it asked, so that may be why I was met with lots of pictures that had me looking like a character from a horror movie. My recommendation – submit lots of photos.

People on social media are sharing their heartfelt reactions to the images, which struck a personal chord for many.

Some people, such as social media influencer Tefi , were moved by the resemblance the generated photos had to actual family members. Other people felt validated in the feeling that they belong to a different era.

Screen Rant

This ai time machine transforms you into a historical figure from any era.

If your social media profile photo needs some zhuzhing up, this AI image generator can turn your selfies and portraits into timeless works of art.

Apps that are designed to produce highly creative imagery through artificial intelligence (AI) are certainly having a moment these days, as another one designed to turn users into prominent people from the past is making the rounds online. Most AI art generators use text-to-image technology that requires user input to determine the artistic direction of rendered photographs. AI art generation is now a mainstay in the zeitgeist, thanks to the likes of DALL-E, an open-source project that inspired many others, which people started using to produce hilarious memes.

Soon after DALL-E’s rise to fame, more platforms that cater to producing hyperrealistic images from descriptive text prompts, including Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, came out of the woodwork and have since attracted sizable user bases. There are even AI art generator apps that are available for both iPhone and Android users . For this new app in particular, fans of historical paintings and AI-generated art, in general, may get a kick out of using a couple of their own photos to re-imagine what they would look like if they were alive in Ancient Greece or during medieval times.

AI Time Machine is an entertaining new feature that’s currently free to try on MyHeritage , an online genealogy platform. It works by taking a collection of photos depicting a single person and turning them into themed portraits seemingly captured from different points in history. Upon launching the AI Time Machine and clicking ‘ Try it now for Free ,’ users will be asked to upload photos of themselves into the program. Users will be asked to create an account on MyHeritage to continue using AI Time Machine. After granting the necessary permissions and agreeing to terms and conditions, the selected photos will be uploaded for AI generation .

How To Get The Best Results From AI Time Machine

In order to ensure that AI Time Machine works as intended, all the photos that are uploaded must only feature one person, the same one in every picture. Users can upload different photos taken within a span of three years or less, but any bigger age gaps than that may confuse the AI. The quality of AI Time Machine’s output wholly depends on the quality of the photos uploaded.

To produce maximum results, people are encouraged to upload more photos — between 10 and 25 images are highly recommended — and make sure that they showcase different expressions, poses, and angles of the face. As much as possible, choose photos that have the least amount of makeup (or none, if possible). At least three full-body photos, five snaps from the chest up, and 10 close-up shots are recommended for the most optimal results.

To create the initial model for the AI to use based on a set of uploaded pictures, AI Time Machine will take anywhere from half an hour to several hours to finish. An email notification will be sent once the new images depicting the user in five complimentary themes have been created. Once the initial artificial intelligence model is created, it should take a couple of minutes to generate new images featuring the other available themes.

Temporal Dilation Coupler —

Man simulates time travel thanks to stable diffusion image synthesis, fictional travelogue shows man taking selfies in ancient greece, egypt, and more..

Benj Edwards - Dec 20, 2022 10:54 pm UTC

An AI-generated image of a fictional time traveler named Stelfie during the construction of the pyramids.

Throughout December, a social media user known as Stelfie the Time Traveller has been crafting a time-hopping travelogue using generative AI. Thanks to Stable Diffusion and fine-tuning, an anonymous artist has created a fictional photorealistic character that he can insert into faux historical photographs set in different eras, such as ancient Egypt or the time of the dinosaurs.

Further Reading

Stable Diffusion is a deep learning image synthesis model that allows people to create fictional scenes using text descriptions called prompts. With an additional technique called Dreambooth, people can insert their own subject or character into scenes generated by Stable Diffusion. It can also be used to insert real people into fictional situations.

So far, "Stelfie" has taken historical selfies during the ice age (being chased by a woolly mammoth), in ancient Egypt (during the construction of the pyramids), in ancient Greece (with the Trojan Horse ), hanging out with Leonardo da Vinci (while creating the Mona Lisa ), in the old West , while running from a Tyrannosaurus rex , and while sailing with Christopher Columbus .

In Log No. 4, Stelfie visited Ulysses and the Trojan Horse.

The artist behind Stelfie writes social media posts (on Twitter , Instagram , and Reddit ) in character as playful dispatches from a 41-year-old time traveler as he visits different locations, for example:

Log #3 - Columbus ship, 1492 DC. "Laaaaand" Now, I don't wanna brag but... After months of sailing Columbus was lost in the Oceans and well let's say I may have kinda suggested the correct direction...

The anonymous artist (a self-identified "funny old man") detailed some of the process he uses to create the images in several Reddit comments: a combination of Stable Diffusion 1.5, a custom AI model for the landscape, and a custom AI model trained on the Stelfie face, which is apparently a fictional person created using Character Creator . He uses "a lot of inpainting," which means inserting AI-generated imagery into the images to fix errors and sculpt the scene, and each image takes three hours to create.

Some may find Stelfie's attempts to sell the images as NFTs unpalatable (the tech is controversial ), but simulated time travel is arguably a novel entertainment use of technology that can otherwise create deepfakes and potentially deceive others. Using Dreambooth and Stable Diffusion , anyone can now insert a character (or themselves) into fantastic and fictional situations, so we'll likely see a lot more fictional entertainment scenarios in the near future.

MyHeritage AI Time Machine lets you travel to the most iconic historical eras

MyHeritage, a global platform for finding your heritage, released the MyHeritage AI Time Machine, which is a cutting-edge and entertaining feature that uses text-to-image AI technology to produce photos of a person in various historical eras. Have you ever imagined how you might have looked if you were a Viking? Now you can stop wondering and see it for yourself.

What is MyHeritage AI Time Machine?

MyHeritage added a fun feature called MyHeritage AI Time Machine that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate hypothetical pictures of a person’s appearance if they lived in different historical eras. You can quickly create images of yourself with MyHeritage AI Time Machine, including as an astronaut, a 19th-century lord or lady, a medieval knight, or an Egyptian pharaoh!

MyHeritage AI Time Machine lets you travel to the most iconic historical eras

“At MyHeritage, we’re constantly developing cool new ways to connect people to their family history. Over the past 3 years, we released many successful features that use the power of AI to bring historic photos to life. MyHeritage AI Time Machine is a new twist on this theme, inviting you to travel to the past and see yourself as you might have looked at the time of your ancestors. While developing this feature, the recurring question among our team was when it would be released so we could finally share our own mind-blowing images!” Gilad Japhet, MyHeritage Founder and CEO

MyHeritage AI Time Machine uses genuine photos you upload to create breathtaking, hyper-realistic visuals presented in various themes, from prehistoric times to the age of space travel and beyond.

The technology used by MyHeritage AI Time Machine is based on Stable Diffusion and was licensed by Astria.

“We are delighted to collaborate with MyHeritage to apply our technology to the field of family history. Generative AI is an exhilarating new frontier, and we’re very excited that this integration will create fun and meaningful experiences for millions of people worldwide.” Alon Burg, Co-founder and CEO of Astria

Images generated by this feature are generated by artificial intelligence; they are not real photographs but are quite lifelike. All images created by AI have watermarks to distinguish them from real photos.

Currently, PC and mobile web browsers can access MyHeritage AI Time Machine.

With a one-time fee, you can submit photos to make a model of one person and produce 160 images with up to 20 different themes. A larger usage quota is available to users of the MyHeritage Complete subscription at no extra cost.

Deepfake technology, a type of synthetic media in which a person in an already-existing image or video is edited or replaced with someone else’s likeness, is a specialty of MyHeritage.

Deepfakes are not without controversy, though; an increasing reason for worry is that they can help propagate false information, stolen identities, and even fraud.

How to use MyHeritage AI Time Machine?

Follow these steps to use MyHeritage AI Time Machine and find your Viking version:

  • Visit the MyHeritage AI Time Machine website. Alternatively, select “AI Time MachineTM” by hovering your cursor over the “Photos” tab in the navigation bar to view the website when connected to your MyHeritage account,
  • You must have an account or register to MyHeritage to use AI Time Machine. You can create an account in under a minute. Select the “Log in” option at the bottom of the pop-up if you already have a MyHeritage account.
  • You may find instructions for choosing which photographs to upload on the following screen. Follow the rules to ensure AI generates the best outcomes. You’ll require 10 to 25 images of the same subject, taken over the course of several days in various locations, stances, and viewpoints. The results will improve as you add more pictures. You may upload up to 35 files. It should be noted that uploading images of people at various ages is typically not a good idea because it impairs the technology’s capacity to create a consistent individual model.
  • Crop the images first so that only you are visible if you appear in some of the pictures with someone else in the foreground.

How does MyHeritage AI Time Machine work?

AI Time Machine uses Stable Diffusion’s text-to-image technology that it has licensed from Astria. It creates a model from several images of a single subject that may represent that person in various stances and lighting conditions that are distinct from those in the source photographs. The model then combines motifs from different eras using a set of predetermined themes to create lifelike images.

MyHeritage AI Time Machine pricing

The MyHeritage AI Time Machine photo generation feature is currently accessible on MyHeritage’s desktop and mobile websites. You can submit photos to make a model of one person and produce 160 images with up to 20 different themes with a one-time fee (€ 9,95, VAT not included). A higher usage quota will be available to users with a MyHeritage Complete plan at no extra cost; information on the quota will be released soon.

Yes, some people are turning to Lensa's Magic Avatars to get a cool cartoon vibe, but others are completely obsessed with the MyHeritage AI Time Machine .

While users are loving these peeks into their "past lives," there are also a lot of questions surrounding the new trend. How do you get the images? Is it free or do you have to pay? We'll cover it all here.

Here at Parade.com, we're all about sharing products we love with our audience. When you make a purchase on an item seen on this page, we may earn a commission, however, all picks are independently chosen unless otherwise mentioned.

What is the MyHeritage AI Time Machine?

MyHeritage is a website  (not an app) that features an "AI Time Machine" which takes photos that you upload and uses artificial intelligence to generate "themed" images that show you throughout history.

According to the site , "Using a number of photos of one subject, it constructs a model that can depict the same person in a variety of poses and lighting conditions that are different from those in the original photos. Then, using a series of predefined themes, it synthesizes the model with motifs from the various themes to craft photorealistic images."

While the AI photo generator only recently launched at the end of November , the hashtag #aitimemachine has been viewed over 37.5 million times on TikTok , with MyHeritage recently reporting that over 44 million output images have been generated so far.

Is MyHeritage free?

Here's where it gets a little complex. According to MyHeritage , AI Time Machine "is in its introductory launch period" which means that at certain times, they will be offering free promotions. You'll know if they're offering the free promotion if you visit their website and notice that the top of the page says "Try it now for free." During this time, you can get generate 40 images from five different themes.

How much does MyHeritage cost?

If you're visiting MyHeritage and they are not running the free promotion at that time, you can always return later and check again. However, if you don't want to wait, you are able to start generating your photos by paying a $12 fee.

How long does MyHeritage AI take?

MyHeritage says , "It typically takes between 30 to 90 minutes to build the initial model from your uploaded photos. You’ll receive an email when your images have been created. Once the model is ready, generating images for any theme you select usually takes a few minutes."

Does the MyHeritage AI app have a secret meaning?

Some people are having fun going a little deeper with this trend—looking for hidden meanings based on the images that speak to them the most. TikTok user zzhilton shared, "Apparently the one you resonate with the most is one of your past lives? And that is right up my alley, so I did every theme possible."

Others are awestruck by the similarities between the way they look in these photos and images they have of family members in the past. This takeaway is less of a secret meaning—but is filled with wonder and amazement all the same.

The best images of time travellers from throughout history.

Every now and then an image appears online which people claim shows a time traveller somewhere they shouldn't be. Are they real though?

Every now and then an image appears online which people claim shows a time traveller somewhere they shouldn't be. But are they just cases of people letting their imaginations run wild?

We've rounded up some of the best and most interesting images of time travellers throughout history. Some turned out to be plain fakes or cases of mistaken identities, but others are certainly intriguing.

Which have you seen before?

  • The most famous ghost photographs ever taken
  • 35 of the most famous alien, monster and unexplained photographs ever taken

The time travelling hipster

This photo was snapped in 1941 at the re-opening ceremony for the South Fork Bridge in British Columbia.

If you look carefully, on the right-hand side you can see an unusually dressed man in what appears to be modern clothing, sporting sunglasses at a time when most were wearing hats and smart jackets.

Many argue this is a time traveller, while others have countered that he's simply a man with a fashion sense ahead of his time. Snopes has shown his clothing is relevant to the time and the area, but it's still great to imagine.

World Cup celebrations

This photo comes from the 1962 World Cup and shows the celebrations as the Brazilian team lifts the trophy.

If you look closely though, you'll see in the bottom centre of the image what looks like someone with a mobile phone snapping a photo of the event.

Could this be a time traveller as well? A bit odd to think someone in the future might have a flip phone , but then they have been making a comeback recently and we know folding phones are about to be big too .

The time travelling sun seeker

This image from 1943 apparently shows British factory workers escaping to the seaside for a break during the midst of wartime. The clothes and beachwear of most people certainly fit the era, but in the centre of a frame appears to be a man dressed like Mr Bean checking his mobile phone.

Or maybe it's a time travel device? Likely a bit of a stretch or a case of overactive internet imagination, but we still enjoy the thought. Maybe there are no public beaches in the future?

Mohawk time traveller

This image from 1905 appears to show the usual happenings of the time - including workers and a banana boat delivering its goods.

However, if you look near the edge of the boat you can spy a man in a white shirt with what appears to be a Mohawk-style haircut. A very unusual haircut for the time and possible proof of a time traveller? Who can say?

Film footage captured during the recording of Charlie Chaplin's 1928 silent film "The Circus" appears to show a lady dressed all in black, wearing a hat and walking around the set talking on her mobile phone.

The footage is a little iffy as is the idea that anyone could be talking on a mobile device in the 1920s, but it's certainly got some suggesting it might be proof time travellers are among us.

The ancient astronaut sculpture

In Salamanca, Spain, there's a cathedral with multiple sculptures carved into its sides. One such sculpture appears to show the likeness of a modern-day (or perhaps futuristic) astronaut.

Considering the cathedral's construction dates back to 1513, people have taken this as proof that time travellers made their way back to that time. However, the truth is the astronaut is merely a modern addition to the artwork carried out by Jerónimo García de Quiñones during renovations in 1992.

Time travelling celebrities

There's an interesting trend of people who closely resemble folks from a bygone era. This could just be a spooky coincidence, but maybe it's proof that time travel is possible.

Perhaps these celebrities are living a double life in another century. Here, Marxist-Leninist Revolutionary Leader Mahir Cayan who was born in 1946 and died in 1972 is shown to bear a striking resemblance to TV star Jimmy Fallon. Is Jimmy Fallon living a double life as a revolutionary communist? Seems hilariously unlikely.

A man and his mobile phone

Some claim that this oil painting by Pieter de Hooch, which was lovingly crafted in 1670 appears to show a young man holding his mobile phone. In an age where such a thing would probably have seen him burnt at the stake, this one is hard to believe.

A description of the image also suggests the young man is a messenger and that's a letter in his hand, not a phone, but it's still nice to let your imagination run wild once in a while. We've often wondered what it would be like to be able to travel back to simpler times to see what life was like for ourselves.

The Adidas trainers mummy

A couple of years ago, an ancient mummy was unearthed by archaeologists digging in Mongolia. At the time, it was suggested the funky-looking footwear she was wearing bore a striking resemblance to Adidas trainers. More evidence of a time traveller visiting ancient times? Investigation of the body dated it around 1,100 years old. That's one heck of a blast through the past.

However, further unearthing showed the woman was more likely to have been a Turkic seamstress which might explain the fresh kicks. She was found with an ancient clutch bag, a mirror, a comb, a knife and more. But no mobile phone.

The time surfer

Another image of an out-of-place individual that people have latched on to as proof that time travel is a reality.

This image dates back over 100 years and shows some smartly dressed Canadians sitting on the side of a hill.

On the left-hand side though, sits a young man in what appears to be a t-shirt and shorts with ruffled hair. He was quickly referred to as the surfing time traveller due to how unusual his attire is. Others have suggested people in the photo appear shocked by his appearance, even pointing out the woman on the right who seems to be gesturing in his direction. Again, this a bit of a stretch as would a time traveller really go through time dressed like that?

A visitor to wartime Reykjavík

This photograph apparently shows a scene from downtown Reykjavík in 1943.

In the heart of wartime, soldiers and sailors can be seen everywhere in the streets among civilians. The man circled though, appears to be on a mobile phone.

We've really got a theme going with these smartphone using time travellers. Who is he calling? And how? And if he is a time traveller, why is he not in Berlin trying to assassinate Hitler?

The dabbing WWII soldier

There's an apparent theme to these time traveller photos that not only includes smartphone users, but also people visiting the second world war.

In this image, a young soldier is seen dabbing, a dance move that became popular around 2014, but certainly wasn't known in wartime.

Of course, it turns out this photo isn't an image of a time traveller, but rather just an image of some actors from 2017's blockbuster Dunkirk . The fact that most of the soldiers are smiling should also be a bit of a giveaway with this one.

Greta Thunberg

In 2019, the internet discovered a photograph from 1898 which showed three children working at a gold mine in Canada's Yukon territory.

The image seemed to show a girl with an incredible likeness to the young climate activist Greta Thunberg. Does this make Thunberg a time traveller who's come through time to save the planet? Weird year for her to choose, but it's a nice idea.

A woman clutching a smartphone (1860)

The painting " The expected one " from 1860, by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller appears to show a woman walking along a rough path, about to be accosted by an adoring young man clutching a pink flower.

A close look though and you'll see she appears to have her attention firmly glued to a modern smartphone. Is this woman actually a time traveller?

Vladimir Putin

A few years back, a number of images surfaced online that seemingly showed Russian President Vladimir Putin snapped over various decades without ageing. Either proof that he's a time traveller or perhaps just immortal?

If true, he's incredibly patriotic, with each image showing him serving his country in one way or another. Though it's more likely to just be a strong likeness.

The AI time traveller

Here's a time traveller with a difference. Stelfie the Time Traveller has been using AI to travel through time. Or at least to give the illusion of doing so.

This creative individual has been using Stable Diffusion to insert the likeness of a modern man into ancient civilisations including Egypt when the pyramids were being constructed, Rome with the centurions and the land of the dinosaurs . It's fun to imagine these as being real, though if you look closely they're clearly AI-generated. As this artificial intelligence improves we'll no doubt get even better images like this. Interestingly even the character taking the selfies isn't real here, but is also made using AI.

AI Dreaming Of Time Travel

time travel ai photo

We love the intersection between art and technology, and a video made by an AI (Stable Diffusion) imagining a journey through time ( Nitter ) is a lovely example. The project is relatively straightforward, but as with most art projects, there were endless hours of [Xander Steenbrugge] tweaking and playing with different parts of the process until it was just how he liked it. He mentions trying thousands of different prompts and seeds — an example of one of the prompts is “a small tribal village with huts.” In the video, each prompt got 72 frames, slowly increasing in strength and then decreasing as the following prompt came along.

There are other AI videos on YouTube, often putting the lyrics of a song into AI-generated form . But if you’ve worked with AI systems, you’ll notice that the background stays remarkably stable in [Xander]’s video as it goes through dozens of feedback loops. This is difficult to do as you want to change the image’s content without changing the look. So he had to write a decent amount of code to try and maintain visual temporal cohesion over time. Hopefully, we’ll see an open-source version of some of his improvements, as he mentioned on Twitter.

In the meantime, we get to sit back and enjoy something beautiful. If you still aren’t convinced that Stable Diffusion isn’t a big deal, perhaps we can do a little more to persuade your viewpoint .

He forgot to include the bit where the world was destroyed in a nuclear armegedon.

The nuclear exchange is nothing but a microsecond in what we call… spacetime. (hope someone gets the reference, hehe)

even read it in his voice XD

The greatest hack is coaxing the system to do what it wasn’t designed for.

“Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turn a… canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?”

Technically no, because it takes a programmer to control the robot.

It is not as if the people training the AIs are specifying how to make art. They give a relatively simple algorithm examples of art and it learns general patterns.

Giving examples is precisely “specifying how to create art”.

Do we even know how to “create art”? If you can specify the process and do it automatically then it isn’t art, it’s an algorithm.

The AI will discern the patterns in what it is shown and the generated output will depend completely on what the humans have decided to show it. If they show it 50 pictures of dogs playing cards then the AI will decide that “art” is pictures of dogs playing cards.

The patterns that it recognizes are not necessarily “simple”, they can have whatever complexity that is necessary to fit the examples. For example you can show it hundreds of pictures of legal chess boards and it will have to divine the rules of chess to make its own images.

Even a good algorithm can be classed as art! Ever heard the saying “that was a work of art” over many thing which arnt classed as art.

You may not see an algorithm as art, but I’m a way, it’s the programmers art! The art is the ability to program a device to do such a thing.

Algorithm or not, it’s still a work of art!

Cool so I guess we end up at the final scene from the End Sinister episode of Aeon Flux

1:38 – Centaur!

Nice collage, of other people’s work.

As a father of 3 artists, I whole heartedly agree.🙄

Sorry but this is the future. With around 1 but per picture in the input it would be very hard to argue that there are any individual images represented.

Hmm, a collage is a collection of pieces of other things. Can you identify any of the parts and provide sources?

The training data set?

So, no. You can’t identify any from the video. Gotcha.

Nice video, but : 0:57 a guy in front of dinausaurs ! 2:04 pyramid of Khafre & other pyramids : at that time the flat limestone casing was fully completed.

https://apologeticspress.org/physical-evidence-for-the-coexistence-of-dinosaurs-and-humans-part-i-2416/

Such a creative video!

Future in another timeline: How an ‘artist’ was able to time travel and take selfies in the distant past

‘Stelfie the Time Traveller’ has been taking these time-hopping selfies using generative AI, specifically, Stable Diffusion. Basically, he will put up a prompt asking the AI system to create a realist-looking image from the past, and use Dreambooth to insert a computer-generated character.

Future in another timeline: How an ‘artist’ was able to time travel and take selfies in the distant past

Imagine being able to travel back in time and take a selfie at the cusp of some of the most important moments in time, which changed the course of human history forever. How about a selfie with the slaves who built the pyramids at Giza? Or, how about one with Christopher Columbus and his crew, on their voyage trying to get to India?

Well, a Twitter user has been doing just that, and thanks to the powers of AI, has been taking or rather creating selfies by travelling back in time.

A Twitter user known as ‘Stelfie the Time Traveller’ has been making a time-hopping travelogue using generative AI, specifically, Stable Diffusion and fine-tuning the result. The user, who’s an anonymous artist has created a fictional photorealistic character that he can insert into faux historical photographs set in different eras.

📳Log #8 : a lucky landing Do not fooking make a sound. Thanks #Stelfie #Timetravel #StableDiffusion #NFTCommunity pic.twitter.com/eGca22ZFXj — Stelfie the Time Traveller (@StelfieTT) December 17, 2022

For those who are unaware, Stable Diffusion is a deep learning image synthesis model that allows people to create fictional scenes using text descriptions called prompts. With an additional technique called Dreambooth, people can insert their own subject or character into scenes generated by Stable Diffusion.

📳Log #5 - Leonardo da Vinci, 1507. ...Right, how do I tell you this? Have you ever noticed that the version of the Monalisa you have in your present has something familiar? Well, you're welcome. #stelfie #timetravel @GodHatesNFTees 801 #monalisa #Gioconda pic.twitter.com/JjW292OQqg — Stelfie the Time Traveller (@StelfieTT) December 11, 2022

‘Stelfie’ or how the artist wants to be known, also posts most of his work on Reddit, where he explained how he goes about, ‘travelling in time.’ He uses a combination of Stable Diffusion 1.5, a custom AI model for the landscape, and a custom AI model trained on the Stelfie face.

📳Log #3 - Columbus ship, 1492 DC. "Laaaaand" Now, I don't wanna brag but... The face, in turn is apparently a fictional person created using Character Creator. He uses a lot of inpainting, which basically means inserting AI-generated imagery into the images to fix errors and sculpt the scene. Stelfie says, that it takes him about three hours to ‘take each selfie’.

📳Log #9 : Mars, year 2022. My fav journey. I colonized Mars with my camping tent so @elonmusk doesn't have to. Feeling lonely? Join me. #Stelfie #Timetravel #StableDiffusion #Ai #NFTCommunity #ElonMusk #parody pic.twitter.com/1OmAIlwOjW — Stelfie the Time Traveller (@StelfieTT) December 19, 2022
📳Log #4 - Ulysses and the Trojan horse So, it is getting a bit messy. I told them I was a messenger of the Gods. I know, I know... Also, I was chit chatting with Ulysses and... #stelfie #timetravel @GodHatesNFTees 801 #Greece #troy pic.twitter.com/TsotHAK7QG — Stelfie the Time Traveller (@StelfieTT) December 9, 2022

So far, Stelfie has travelled back in time to take photos with Columbus and his crew, with the slaves in Egypt while they were building the pyramids at Giza, ridden and fought with Ulysses and other greeks who were inside the Trojan Horse during the siege of Troy and many other points in time. Not just that he has also colonised Mars in the future, and fought off dinosaurs in the past.

Stelfie plans on selling these images as NFTs. While people may be a little put off by that, one cannot deny, that these are a novel way to keep yourself entertained.

Google's latest AI tool will help you plan your next vacation — here's how it works

All from a simple search query

Google Search on Android phone

Google is bringing travel-related features to its new artificial intelligence search results including trip planning, reviews and photos of your destination — but its opt-in for now. Although the search giant has started putting AI into the main results .

Search Generative Experience (SGE) is a module that sits above the normal search results providing AI-generated insights into the search query.

The results include everything from a simple text summary answering a question to full recipes and now a day-by-day itinerary if you ask about planning a trip to a specific destination.

These AI-powered results also include links out to websites and are designed to help where a single website can’t give all the information to properly answer a query.

What travel information is Google adding to SGE?

Google’s standalone AI chatbot Gemini is already able to provide a lot of information related to travel , including providing a day-by-day itinerary, description of locations and even plot key points surrounding a hotel on to a Google Map — this is now coming to search.

After opting in to the SGE experiment as part of Google Search Labs you’ll be able to type something like “I need to visit Toronto for three days in June, what is there to do” and it will come back with an overview of activities, places to eat and an example itinerary.

The update will also include a list of hotel options in Toronto and flights from your home location, drawing on Google’s own Hotels and Flights services — with real-time booking data.

Sign up to get the BEST of Tom’s Guide direct to your inbox.

Upgrade your life with a daily dose of the biggest tech news, lifestyle hacks and our curated analysis. Be the first to know about cutting-edge gadgets and the hottest deals.

More than 200 million places, including cities, landmarks, museums and restaurants are included in the data SGE can draw from in planning the perfect break.

How does travel information in SGE work?

Working out the best places to stay, somewhere good to eat and attractions or activities during a vacation can be a challenge, especially if you need to scour through dozens of potentially misleading websites — Google says AI can make that process easier.

Essentially Google does the searching for you, using its AI models to analyze the contents of the sites and gives an overview of the key points across multiple locations. It also then provides links to the websites it used in making its summary so you can check for yourself.

[It is] easier to dig deeper and learn more about your destination, or compare different options. Google

You can type something like “plan me a 3 day trip to Philadelphia that's all about history” into the normal Google search box and SGE will pop up with suggestions that include attractions, restaurants and all the necessary travel information.

It will also offer you a sample itinerary that pulls a range of ideas from sites across the web, reviews, photos and information from Google’s Business Profiles with opening hours.

Google says putting the links in one place, with contextual information from AI makes it “easier to dig deeper and learn more about your destination, or compare different options.”

At launch it is only available in English and in the U.S. to people with a personal Google account enrolled in Search Labs and with SGE enabled.

Get real-time translations during phone calls

The first setting you'll definitely want to enable is Live Translate, which features near-real-time voice translations between you and whoever you're speaking with on the phone. Before we get into how the translation tool works, let's turn it on first.

In  Settings , go to Advanced features > Advanced intelligence > Phone and toggle on Live translate . Before you start using Live Translate, choose your language, the language of the person you're speaking with and the translation voices. (There are 13 languages, including simplified Chinese and Mexico, Spain and US Spanish, with more on the way, the company said.) You also have the option to mute your voice and the other person's voice so that you hear only the translation voice.

Live translate setting on the Galaxy S24

You can choose language and voice presets for individual contacts.

To use Live Translate, make your phone call, hit the Call assist button and then choose Live translate to start real-time translation. A screen showing your conversation, with both original and translated text, will appear in real time as you speak. After you speak, the translation tool will translate what you say into the other participant's language. If you have your voices muted, participants will only hear the translation voices speak.

Use generative AI to edit your photos

One of the biggest AI tools on the Galaxy S24 is Generative Edit, which allows you to erase, recompose and remaster the photos you take on your phone, using generative AI. For example, if you want to resize an object or remove a person in a photo, Generative Edit can generate a new background to fill in any missing pieces.

Like the rest of the features and settings in this guide, Generative Edit is not on by default, so you'll need to turn it on in your settings. Go to Settings  >  Advanced features  >  Advanced intelligence  > Photo Editor and toggle on Generative edit .

Generative edit tool on the Galaxy S24

Move, remove and resize people and objects in your photos and use generative AI to fill the background in.

In the Gallery app, hit Edit and then tap the AI button , with three stars, to use generative AI. You can then straighten the photo out, and generative AI will help generate more background, or you can draw on the image to move, remove or resize any object in the photo, with generative AI once again creating a background to fill the image in.

Automatically create a summary of your voice recording

The Voice Recorder on your Galaxy S24 doesn't just record audio. It's also capable of transcribing the audio into text and then using AI to summarize the text, which is useful if you're recording a lecture at school or a presentation at work. However, before you can summarize your transcriptions, you have to enable the feature in your settings.

Go to Settings >  Advanced features  >  Advanced intelligence  > Voice Recorder > Summaries  and toggle it on. Turning Summaries on will automatically create a summary of your audio recordings using artificial intelligence.

Transcript assist setting on the Galaxy S24

You can choose various languages besides English for your transcripts and summaries.

If you want to check out the transcription tool at work, tap on an audio recording in the Voice Recorder application, create a transcript and then go into the Summary tab. At the top of the summary you'll see keywords you can tap to check out specific sections in the summary, and underneath that is where the summary lives, full of AI-generated headers and bullet points.

AI transcript and summaries for voice memos on the Galaxy S24

There are timestamps so that you can follow along with the audio as you check out your transcript summary.

Get summaries of any site you visit in your web browser

Another AI tool that you need to enable before you can use it allows you to summarize pretty much any webpage you visit in your browser. For this to work, however, you'll need to be in Samsung's default web browser, which is simply called Internet. The AI summary tool doesn't work in Chrome or any other third-party web browser.

In  Settings  >  Advanced features  >  Advanced intelligence  > Samsung Internet > Summarize , toggle the tool on. Now you can get summaries for webpages.

Browsing assist and summarize setting on the Galaxy S24

As mentioned in the settings, these summaries are not stored by Samsung.

Go to the Samsung web browser, visit a site you want to summarize and press the AI icon (three stars) that appears in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. Hit  Summarize and you'll get an AI-generated summary of the webpage. Below you can see a summary of David Lumb's CNET story on the Samsung Galaxy Ring .

Webpage summary on the Galaxy S24

You can copy the summary to your clipboard, translate it to another language or hit the edit icon on the top right of the summary panel to get a more detailed summary.

Process data only on your device when using AI

The final AI setting you should consider enabling is for your own privacy. In  Settings  >  Advanced features  >  Advanced intelligence , you can toggle on Process data only on device so that any data processed via artificial intelligence is done only on your device, instead of online.

Usually, your data is sent to a third party only to generate a response for whatever feature you're using. It's not used for machine learning or advertisements, and your data is immediately deleted from third-party servers as soon as your generation is complete. But if you feel safer with your data staying on your device, you should enable this setting.

Samsung does warn that toggling this feature on will provide worse results and certain AI features may not work.

While you're here, check out  the best phone to buy in 2024 .

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Google will now let you use AI to build travel itineraries for your vacations

time travel ai photo

As we inch toward the summer holidays, Google is announcing a slate of travel updates that place it squarely in the travel planning process and give it a lot more insight into purchasing intent in the travel sector.

First up, Google is rolling out an update to its  Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will allow users to build travel itineraries and trip ideas using AI, the company announced on Wednesday.

The new capability — currently only available in English in the U.S. to users enrolled in Search Labs , its program that lets users experiment with early-stage Google Search experiences and share feedback — draws on ideas from sites across the web, along with reviews, photos and other details that people have submitted to Google for places around the world.

When users ask for something like “plan me a three day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history,” they will get a sample itinerary that includes attractions and restaurants, as well as an overview of options for flights and hotels, divided up by times of day.

For now, the itineraries are just that: There are no options to buy services or experiences on the spot. When you’re happy with your itinerary, you can export it to Gmail, Docs or Maps.

Google has not commented on when or if it might roll this out more widely. But it points to how the company is experimenting with how and where it can apply its AI engine. A lot of players in the travel industry may be eyeing up the role that generative AI will play in travel services in the coming years — some excitedly, some warily. But even now, startups like Mindtrip and Layla , which provide users with access to AI assistants that are designed to help you plan your trips, are already actively pursuing this.

But with this new update, Google is taking on startups like these while also gathering data about travel purchasing intent (useful for its wider ad business) and learning what kind of appetite its users might have for such services.

Google also announced that it’s making it easier to discover lists of recommendations in Google Maps in select cities in the U.S. and Canada. If you search for a city in Maps, you will now see lists of recommendations for places to go from publishers like The Infatuation, as well as from other users. You will also see curated lists of top, trending, and hidden gem restaurants in 40+ U.S. cities.

Finally, the company is adding new tools to help you customize lists you create, so you can better organize your travel plans or share your favorite spots with your friends and family. You can choose the order the places appear in a list so you can organize them by top favorites or chronologically like an itinerary. Plus, you can link to content from your social channels.

I Tested 4 Different AI Image Detectors: Here's How Accurate They Were

I put four AI image detectors to the test to see if they could accurately distinguish AI from human-made images.

Quick Links

How i tested ai image detectors, how accurate was hive moderation, how accurate was hugging face's sdxl detector, how accurate was illuminarty, how accurate was ai or not, key takeaways.

  • I tested the capabilities of four AI image detectors—Illuminarty, AI or Not, Hive Moderation, and SDXL Detector—using two AI images generated by DALL-E and one photo taken by a human.
  • The results varied among the detectors, with some accurately distinguishing AI-generated images from real ones, while others made some mistakes.
  • Even the most accurate detectors aren't perfect, highlighting the need for multiple tools to spot fakes.

If identifying fake art and photos is important to you, AI image detectors are invaluable—but some are more reliable than others. After testing the best apps available today, here’s how they each performed with AI-generated and human images.

After picking four of the best AI image detector tools around, I created two AI images on DALL-E 2. One is of a cat watching a butterfly. The other mimics a painting of a sailboat surrounded by birds.

Illuminarty, AI or Not, Hive Moderation, and SDXL Detector processed both of these images alongside a photo of elephant figurines definitely taken by a human.

The screenshots below display the initial results. Repeating the process didn’t change any outcome, which means that none of the apps learn as you use them. Their analysis and probability scores are based on their algorithms alone. You’ll find them listed from most to least accurate in detecting AI images.

Hive Moderation was the most effective AI image detector of the lot. The cat and butterfly image scored 99.9 percent. The sailboat was also marked as AI-generated with 98.3 percent certainty.

When given any image made by a human, Hive Moderation never gave a false positive. It can clearly tell the difference between real and artificial creations.

So, not only is Hive Moderation accurate, but it’s also very confident in its analytical capabilities. AI image generators struggling with hands stand little chance of fooling this AI detector.

While not the most attractive app, the SDXL Detector on Hugging Face performed almost as well as Hive Moderation, making it the second most accurate AI image detector on this list.

It scores uploaded files based on their likelihood of being AI versus human. The cat and butterfly image got 0.844 for artificial and 0.156 for human. The detector accurately identified it as AI-generated but with some uncertainty.

The fake painting of a sailboat was correctly caught by Hugging Face’s algorithm. The artificial score was 0.981 and the human 0.019. The detector matched Hive Moderation’s probability calculation.

It was also right about the photograph of the elephant figurines. SDXL Detector marked it as human by a score of 1, leaving no chance of it being artificial.

Illuminarty correctly spotted the AI images but thought the real photo was artificial, too. Let’s break down the results.

The cat and butterfly got the highest probability score: 89.3 percent. The detector is programmed to identify AI-generated images through their flaws, and it did quite well with this picture.

It was less confident, however, when it came to the AI artwork of a sailboat. The strokes and textures are convincing enough to give the detector pause but not fool it completely. It got a probability score of 78.5 percent.

But then Illuminarty was 77.7 percent sure that the photograph of the elephants was AI-generated.

This goes to show that even the best AI image detectors aren’t perfect. They can make mistakes depending on a picture's subject and characteristics.

AI or Not offers much simpler results. There are no probability percentages, just the likelihood of an image being AI or human.

When tested with the AI images, it correctly classified the cat and butterfly as artificial. The sailboat, however, tricked the detector and passed as human-generated.

Unfortunately, AI or Not struggles to process real photos and artworks, but when it does, it accurately identifies them as human-made.

What this experiment demonstrates is that some AI image detectors are still works in progress, while others are already extremely reliable in spotting fake pictures. While Hive Moderation and Hugging Face’s SDXL Detector are the most accurate, don’t discount the handiness of AI or Not as its software develops.

The best way to spot and avoid AI-generated images, especially as they become more and more realistic, is to have multiple detectors analyze them. Pick at least two that you trust, and don’t fall for a fake picture again.

Use these digital tools to ease your travel stress

Be an airport insider with these hi-tech offerings that will get you to your final destination in no time and with less stress.

time travel ai photo

By Amy Iverson

Air travel is a key part of many vacations, but the lines, delays and crowds can make it less than perfect.

The good news is that technology is available to ease your journey.

A simple text prompt, Google search or phone app can help you avoid the problems that cause many common difficulties.

Check flight status with your phone

This first text tip is the simplest, yet the most mind-blowing. Anyone using an iPhone can easily find out flight information by tapping on a flight number in Messages.

That’s right, there’s no need to open an airline’s app, just text yourself the airline name plus the word “flight” and the flight number. Then tap on that number to see flight information at a glance.

When you click, a map pops up showing where the plane is in real time. You can see whether the flight is on time, its arrival gate and how to get to baggage claim.

This smartphone trick is especially helpful when you need to stay in touch with your ride home from the airport. Whether your family member is doing you a solid, or a ride-sharing driver is headed your way, texting the flight number is a simple way to get them all the information they need.

This flight tracking service works for iOS, even if the text is coming from an Android phone. But the feature does not work if an Android phone is the receiver.

Use AI to create travel plans

In the past, I’ve relied on Frommers or Fodors to give me an initial itinerary for any location I plan to visit. Now, artificial intelligence can help me plan upcoming trips.

To use this travel tip, turn on Google’s generative AI capabilities in Search Labs by clicking on the lab beaker in the upper left-hand corner of the Google app’s homepage. Then, ask something like, “plan a two-day trip to Boston” to get a specific itinerary, including where to visit and eat, as well as hotel and flight recommendations.

The AI-generated schedule will be a jumping off point that you can fine-tune the schedule with your own ideas.

I tried something similar on Chat GPT and was underwhelmed with its specificity. Google’s AI did a much better job at giving me a fairly robust travel plan.

Using PreCheck and Global Entry

For years, I’ve been pushing the advantages of TSA PreCheck for anyone who flies more than a few times per year.

After you enroll, you get to use a shorter security line and don’t need to remove shoes or belts. You can also leave your laptop inside your bag.

The online application process takes five minutes. After you complete the form, you’ll need to appear in person for about 10 minutes at one of their sites.

And now, those with digital driver’s license IDs are getting even more perks at airport security. Chicago O’Hare and Los Angeles International are no longer asking to see a driver’s license for travelers who have both TSA PreCheck and a digital driver’s license. You get your face scanned, but since it compares that photo with your digital ID, you don’t need to show or insert a physical driver’s license anywhere.

If you fly internationally four or more times each year, you may want to opt for Global Entry , which grants expedited customs screening for travelers returning to the U.S.

TSA PreCheck comes as part of Global Entry, which costs $100 right now for five years (that price goes up to $120 in October). Some credit cards and frequent flyer programs will reimburse these fees.

But if you don’t go for Global Entry, be aware of this little-known app that could save you time at customs. The Mobile Passport Control app has you submit a photo, customs declaration and passport to streamline your return to the U.S. at some airports.

Create a profile with your passport, then once you land in the US, take a selfie, complete some questions and bring your passport to a Customs and Border Patrol officer. You can add up to 12 profiles on the app for family members.
