Nothing throws a wrench in your skincare routine quite like travel. There are so many elements working against you, from 3.4-ounce liquid limits to that tortuously dry airplane climate . I’m also frequently on the road—I travel at least once a month to host Traveler's Women Who Travel meetups , and I'm in a long-distance relationship—making me a case study for someone who needs a reliable, one-step facial cleansing product.

I first discovered no-rinse cleansing towelettes in college, when the concept of wiping all the grime, dirt, and makeup off my face in one swipe felt primed for my student-level laziness. It began with a Costco-size pack of Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes which my mom, horrified that I would be left to my own devices while studying abroad in Amsterdam , shoved in my backpack on the way to the airport. For the duration of my 4.5-month program, I would kick back in my dorm on the Prinsengracht canal every evening and “wash my face” with those little pre-moistened cloths, blown away that I didn’t need to pad to the shared bathroom to complete my pre-bed routine. It was a revelation.

RMS Beauty's wipes are made with just one ingredient—organic coconut oil—and each individually-wrapped towelette is fully compostable. They seamlessly removed all of my makeup and the residual oil did the job of a moisturizer (read: one less thing to pack). The downside? As much as I want to love it, coconut oil always feels too greasy, and an hour after using the wipes I returned to the bathroom to wash my face. (The oil also made my wispy bangs feel greasy.) They aren't everyday-practical for my skin type, but I can still see myself using these towelettes on a beach trip —maybe to remove eye makeup before a swim, or any other use-case in which I know water will remove the excess oil.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Wipes

I packed the Bioderma wipes for a long weekend in Los Angeles . These wipes are a follow-up to the French brand's micellar cleansing water (an oil and water solution that acts as a makeup remover, cleanser, and moisturizer) and indeed, they're easier to throw in a carry-on than their bottled counterpart . They have a short ingredient list and are marketed with virtuous buzzwords like "paraben-free," "hypoallergenic," and "biodegradable." My face felt clean after using them but they didn’t remove all of my eye makeup, and by day three of the trip I was using the hotel’s lotion to remove leftover traces of waterproof mascara .

Klorane Makeup Remover Wipes with Soothing Cornflower

I struck gold with the Klorane wipes—I started using them at home but knew I was hooked when I instinctively threw them in my bag for a long weekend in Fire Island . They worked just as well as my Neutrogena wipes, leaving my face completely clean without any residue. Plus, Klorane is a French-girl staple (enough to win me over), and the “soothing cornflower” recipe reads as a natural alternative: the wipes are fragrance- and sulfate-free, and pH-balanced. They're almost double the cost of Neutrogena's, but I'd gladly pay more for the pared-down ingredient list.

The Verdict

In terms of less waste, my face wipe habit is never going to be as sustainable as regular face wash. The RMS wipes, though compostable, are individually packaged in a non-compostable wrapper. The Bioderma and Klorane wipes are both marked as biodegradable, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re tossing them in the regular waste bin (they require living organisms and soil to break down, which isn't the case when surrounded by piles of trash in a landfill). Because there’s so little regulation on how the term biodegradable (and compostable for that matter) is used, it’s generally not a great guideline when choosing the best face wipe.

That said, I’m packing Klorane’s wipes in my bag going forward. I know I need to limit my use of disposable products (we all do), and cleansing towelettes are no exception—but whenever I find myself in need of a low-maintenance face wash, I know these will get the job done. Plus, something about that deep cornflower-blue packaging feels decidedly luxurious.
