The Historical Essence of Windermere Cruising

Comfortably seated with the wind in your hair and a warming drink in your hand… Could there be a better way to experience England’s longest lake? Ferries, originally rowing boats, have been moving passengers and goods up, down and across Windermere for centuries, but it was only in 1845, with the launch of the first steamer, the ‘Lady of the Lake’, that cruising for the sake of cruising was born. Windermere Lake Cruises, past tiny islands and enjoying views of towering fells, became a staple of the Lake District experience.

Diverse Fleet for Every Traveler

A large fleet of vessels now plies these waters, from converted steamers with three decks that hold more than 500 passengers to charming wooden launches with room for just 57 people. At the peak of the summer holiday season, there are dozens of scheduled sailings every day, varying from 30 minutes to 90 minutes.

Major Embarkation Points for Windermere Lake Cruises

The lake’s entire length is covered, with the main embarkation points situated at Ambleside (Waterhead), Bowness and Lakeside. There are also piers at Brockhole , Wray Castle , Ferry House and Fell Foot.

Combo Adventures: More than Just a Cruise

Combined tickets enable travellers to link a boat trip with a visit to one of several local attractions – the Lakeland Motor Museum , the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway , and the Lakes Aquarium, all of which are located at the southern end of Windermere.

Special Themed Cruises

Seasonal trips include summer evening buffets with live music, Santa sailings with Father Christmas on board and nature-themed cruises that include commentary by a National Park ranger. Among the species you might see are red-breasted merganser, mute swan, Canada goose, greylag goose, coot and the ubiquitous mallard. There are also large numbers of cormorants roosting on the islands. Otters frequent some of the quieter spots along the shore and it’s possible to see red deer and red squirrels in the woods. Come back in the winter to spot migratory birds such as tufted duck, goldeneye, pochard and great crested grebe.

For the Cycling Enthusiasts

Bikes are welcome on many services and, from May to September, there’s a dedicated bike boat that operates between Brockhole and Bark Barn on the western shore. Here, miles of traffic-free trails enable cyclists to discover the haunted woodland of Claife Heights. Bikes, tag-alongs and trailers can be hired from Brockhole. Similarly, Windermere Lake Cruises services open up countless opportunities for walkers, including several linear routes. Consider catching a boat from Bowness to Lakeside and then walking the seven miles north, through woods and along the quiet western shore, to Ferry House to catch the Cross Lakes Shuttle (April-October) back to Bowness.

An Oasis for Walkers

There is also a special ‘Walkers’ Ticket’ available from April until the end of October, which enables you to catch the boat across from the eastern shore to Wray Castle, walk the wooded shore path south for four miles to Ferry House and then catch the two boats needed to get you back to your starting point.

Windermere Christmas Celebration: Get there by boat and by goat!

Published: 6th December 2018

A highlight of The Lake District’s Christmas schedule returns to Windermere this coming weekend, when it’s hoped visitors will leave the stress of driving behind and instead use alternative travel methods to get there; specifically, by boat and by ‘goat’.

The Windermere Christmas Celebration is being held on December 8 & 9 on High Street, Victoria Street and Cross Street, with an estimated 10,000 people expected to attend, based on last year’s figures.

As the popularity of the event continues to grow, two local transport providers are stepping in to do their bit to keep the traffic flowing as freely as possible.

Windermere Lake Cruises’ team is working alongside Mountain Goat bus tours to help visitors have a stress-free day and to reinforce its position as not just one of England’s most popular ‘paid for’ visitor attractions, but a valuable transport provider.

By stopping off at four different jetties around the lake, market organisers hope to attract Christmas shoppers from all sides, arriving in Windermere by catching boats from Lakeside and Ambleside before disembarking at Bowness. From there, a shuttle bus service, free of charge, will be laid on by Mountain Goat to get passengers onto the market in Windermere.

For visitors who can’t avoid using their cars, parking will be available at The Glebe in Bowness as in previous years.

Jennifer Cormack, Windermere Lake Cruises’ Sales & Marketing Director, says, “It’s a common misconception that Windermere Lake Cruises is purely and simply a tourist attraction. We understand how useful we can be to help people get around the Windermere area, not just visitors, but residents too. Whether you’re coming from the north end of the lake or the south, we can get you right into the heart of the market by boat and then by ‘goat’!”

Windermere Lake Cruises will operate ten daily services between Bowness and Ambleside on the days of the Christmas market, with a further four daily serves between Bowness and Lakeside for people visiting from Furness and surrounding areas.

The Windermere Christmas Celebration will feature live music all weekend, a visit from Father Christmas, activities for children and local festive food & craft stalls, between 11am-7pm on December 8, then again between 10am and 4pm on December 9.

  • Full details are online at www.windermerechristmas.co.uk , and on Facebook

Shuttle Bus Departures

The shuttle bus departs every few minutes from outside Bowness Pier ( 1 minute walk to boat services and 5 minutes walk from all Bowness car parks) and Ellerthwaite Square (5 minutes walk from Windermere Christmas Celebration). It is FREE.

  • Saturday 8th December - 11am - 7pm
  • Sunday 9th December - 10am - 4pm

Windermere Lake Cruises has teamed up with the Mountain Goat travel firm to give revellers a wonderful winter-time cruise across the lake at Windermere to Bowness Bay Pier – then a free shuttlebus will run you up to the seasonal celebration in the heart of Windermere village.  The celebration is even more keenly anticipated this year as it’s not been held since 2019 because of the global pandemic.

So, to add that extra seasonal spice – why not leave your car behind – hop onboard a Windermere Lake Cruises vessel and head to Bowness over the waters of England’s longest Lake? You can set off from Ambleside or Lakeside and once you arrive at Bowness Bay Pier a free Mountain Goat shuttle bus will whisk you along to the celebration in the heart of Windermere village

“It’s a wonderful way to start your Christmas celebrations,” says Windermere Lake Cruises’ sales and marketing director Jennifer Cormack. The scenery around the lake is often enhanced at this time of year by snow covered mountain tops and frosty fresh air – so what better way to head to and from the Christmas Celebration!”

The weekend-long event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11 on the streets of Windermere vilage. It draws crowds from across the country to enjoy food, drink and family fun. There’s live music and entertainment, food and craft stalls and a fun fair. It’s the perfect festive family event and Father Christmas is expected to make an appearance!

Led by the team from the Windermere Tourist Information Centre and The Mountain Goat, the community-run event hopes to establish itself for years to come. Windermere Lake Cruises has been one of the major sponsors since it first launched. Other main sponsors are Mountain Goat, Lamplighter Dining Rooms, Windermere Town Council and McClures.

Event director Kate Barton, of Windermere TIC, says: “It’s been a challenging few years but we are determined to bounce back better than ever! The Christmas Celebration is taking place in the usual on-street location – Victoria Street, High Street, Cross Street.” Kate adds: “Due to roadworks in Windermere we would strongly advise people to take advantage of the free shuttle bus – and why not add a seasonal treat and take a cruise on Windermere as well!”

The free shuttlebus runs daily from Braithwaite Fold Car park, Glebe Road Car Park and Bowness Pier. It will drop off at Ellerthwaite Square in Windermere where visitors can walk through the village to the event. Discount cruises are available through Windermere Lake Cruises. Local residents of any age can apply for the Local Residents Discount Card which, until May 1, 2023, offers half price scheduled sailings and half price entry to the Lakeland Motor Museum.

The free shuttle bus runs between 10am-6pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
