Can you cancel your Viva Air flight and get a refund?

Can I cancel my Viva Air flight?

Do you have a flight with Viva Air that you can no longer use? Plans change, we know. We help many travellers like you recover money from their non-refundable flights every year.

Can I cancel my Viva Air flight and get a refund?

Unfortunately, Viva Air tickets are non-refundable. You will only get refunded if you purchased ‘cancel protection’ when you bought the tickets. Otherwise, you can get a refund for your taxes only. But, don’t despair! Viva Air allow name changes. This means that you can sell your ticket to another traveller and get your refund from them, instead of the airline! You can find more information on the Viva Air name change rules below.

I have the Viva Air cancel protection, what do I do now?

This is an additional service that allows a passenger to cancel a trip from the moment they purchase the service until 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight and get a refund for the portion of the trip that will not be flown. Cancellations must be made through the call center or via e-mail at [email protected] until 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight.  Once this time has elapsed, the "Cancel Protection" service cannot be provided. This service can only be purchased during the initial purchase process through the website www.vivaair.com/co .

I don’t have the cancel protection option, what do I do now?

There are certain limited situations when you can get a refund from the airline:

Cancellations and delays : Refunds will apply when a reservation is affected for any reason caused by Viva Air, such as: cancellations, rescheduling, delays, security reasons, multiple debits or extra amount charges.

Illness/Death : in case of death of the title holder of the ticket, his/her companion (as long as they have the same itinerary) or relatives (grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, siblings, spouse) are entitled to request a refund. Such request should be filed within the 30 working days following the scheduled date of the flight.  Viva Air may apply penalties to a refund for decease reasons.

In order to process your refund request, please complete the following form by clicking here . The refund will be made in the same form of payment that you used at the time of purchase.

Can I change my Viva Air booking?

Yes! If your plans change after buying a ticket, Viva Air gives you the option to make changes to your reservation up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure for domestic flights and up to 3 hours for international flights, as long as you have not completed the web check-in process. If changes are not made and you don't fly, the ticket will not be valid anymore, cannot be used in the future, and the money paid will not be refunded.

When changing the date and/or time, you have to pay the cost of reissuing the new ticket of USD 18.50 per journey and per passenger, or its equivalent in national currency.

For route changes, date and/or time passengers you also have to pay the fare difference and the cost of reissuing the new ticket of USD 18.50 per journey and per passenger, or its equivalent in national currency.

USD 18.50 for date and/or time changes is the administration charge for reissuing the new ticket. You must pay a change fee in addition to the administration charge. Please find the table of charges below

Change fees

Note that...

When making a change to a reservation, it will apply to all passengers under such reservation. If you want the change for only one or some of the passengers, a reservation Split must be requested through the airline’s call center or at [email protected]

Can I change the name on my Viva Air booking?

Yes! Viva Air allow name changes. This means that you can sell your ticket to another passenger and get a refund for your flight if you can’t travel. Name changes can be made only before the start of the trip and by paying the designated fee. Please note:

The administration fee for changes is USD 18.50 (or its equivalent in national currency) per journey per passenger

Please find name change fees in the table below, which you have to pay in addition to the admin fee

The option to make changes to your ticket is available up to two hours before the scheduled flight departure for domestic routes and three hours for international routes.

Changes must be made before online check-in.

In the event you do not make the change within the allotted time and don't board the flight as per the original terms, your ticket will become invalid and cannot be used later, and the money will not be refunded.

viva air aircraft

Viva Air is Certified as a 2-Star Low-Cost Airline for the quality of its airport and onboard product and staff service. Product rating includes cabin comfort, baggage / seat charges, buy onboard food & beverages, cabin cleanliness, and service rating covers cabin and ground staff.

“Viva Air has a modern fleet of A320 aircraft, and onboard product standards are fair for a low-cost carrier. Cabin cleanliness is an item where improvements could be made. While cabin staff service is functional, it lacks in service interest or quality. As with most LCCs, there are strict check-in and baggage rules and customers need to follow these. Poor airport service lowers the rating for Viva Air and this needs change to meet a 3-Star rating.”

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Viva Air 2024 Review: Colombia's one budget airline worth it?

Viva Air 2024 Review: Colombia's one budget airline worth it?

Is flying with Viva Air a good choice? Worried about the reviews people have been saying about Viva Air? I'm here to share with you all of the info I've gathered so that you can decide whether they're the right airline to book with!

viva air travel assistance fee

One of the most significant burdens to every budget-conscious traveler is the costs of the flights.

We've previously reviewed airlines like  Vueling Airlines  and  EasyJet . Still, with many different budget airlines popping up in your search for cheap flight deals, it's hard to track which airlines are legit.

If you're headed to Central or South America, you might come across Viva Air. Are they a reputable airline you should use? Are their budget costs worth the compromises?

I put my head down and did hours of research so I could give you a comprehensive review that'll help conflicted budget travelers. Now you can browse my review and make a more informed decision about whether to book with Viva Air!

Viva Air Logo.

What Is Viva Air?

Founded in 2009, Viva Air , also known as Viva Air Colombia, is a low-budget Colombian airline based out of Rionegro, Colombia. It's Colombia's only low-cost airline.

The company's goal is to deliver consistent and reliable service while keeping the flight costs low in the region.

The low-cost model means that all Viva Air's flights are operated on a single aircraft: Airbus A320, and passengers fly in economy only.

Tickets are basic, with little amenities, operating with a model that you can pay extra to have any further amenities for your flight. You'll also be randomly assigned a seat with the low fare option.

Where Does Viva Air Fly?

Due to how Viva Air's low-cost model is structured, it doesn't fly everywhere in the world. Viva's flights operate throughout Colombia and Peru and some cities in Mexico and Buenos Aires in Argentina.

The company is looking at expanding destinations into Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Puerto Rico, and several cities in the United States.

Those launch dates are currently TBA, so there is no word on when that expansion might happen. Still, Viva Air is looking to make low-cost air travel more widely available on their network.

If you're looking at flying to Colombia, check out our blog posts on  Medellin  and nightlife if  Cartagena  to get you started!

Viva Air Deals

Who doesn't love a good deal, especially on air travel? Even though Viva Air already works to make their flights low cost, that doesn't mean they don't like promoting deals on some of their routes! If you're flexible with your travels enough to fly specific routes on specific dates, you can get your fare even cheaper than normal.

Head to Viva Air's  flight deals  page to explore their international flight offers.

Contact Information

While we always hope that any travel goes off without any hitches, you never know when you might need to call your airline. Viva Air has a few different ways to get in touch with them should you need any assistance.

The easiest way is through their 24-hour online chat function, but you can also call their call center. If you're in the United States, dial 8556520600. You can also email  [email protected]  or reach out using  Facebook ,  Twitter , or  Instagram .

Checking In

As your flight nears, you'll need to check-in for your flight. Unlike many airlines, Viva Air requires you to show a printed boarding pass to check-in, so be sure to have that in hand when you arrive at the airport. Online check-in becomes available between 24 hours and 3 hours before your flight for international flights and between 48 hours and 2 hours before your flight for domestic flights.

You can also pay an additional fee to have Viva Air check you in at the airport.

Viva Air Checking In.

Baggage Policy

Viva Air doesn't come with much luggage allowance as a low-cost model airline. Every passenger is allowed one personal item, which cannot exceed 10 kg (26 lbs) and 40x35x25cm, and it must be placed under the seat in front of you. In addition to your personal item, you can also bring binoculars, a small camera, reading material (books), a jacket, or a small duty-free bag free of charge.

If you would like to bring any additional luggage, this will come at an additional cost. Checked baggage starts at COP 36.999 for domestic flights and $24.99 for international flights if booked when making your initial web reservation. Prices go up if you book extra luggage at a later date, with the most expensive time to book is at the gate itself.

You can also purchase a medium fare ticket, including one checked bag of up to 20kg.

Viva air baggage policy

Does Viva Air Serve Food?

One of the biggest questions I know I ask myself when I'm getting on any flight. Still, especially international ones are, what's the food situation. As a low-cost model airline, don't expect any food services with Viva Air. Both domestic and international flights come with  onboard menus , so you can snack at high altitudes, but all food and drink will have to be paid for onboard. Their menus are pricey, so you may want to consider bringing some snacks, especially on longer flights!

Viva Air Reviews

On Trustpilot, Viva Air holds an average rating of 1.5/5 stars. Most Viva Air reviews fall into the one-star, "bad" category. Previous travelers have commented that Viva Air has many hidden fees, and their online system defaults to adding extra charges.

As a low-cost airline, they also don't always inform passengers of requirements (such as needing to purchase a San Andres Tourist Tax Card before boarding a flight to San Andres). They then can deny boarding due to those restrictions.

Travelers also report poor customer service and Viva Air's customer service responsiveness.

viva air travel assistance fee

Is Viva Air Worth It?

Expectations with Viva Air should be treated like any other low-cost airline. Viva Air shouldn't be your first choice for low-cost flying based on other travelers' reviews. While the prices may be enticing, it seems to come at the cost of having surety in your travels. Plus, there have been reports of recurring charges in hidden fees, which is less than optimal considering this is a budget airline.

However, some of their routes may be more difficult to access on other airlines. If you're looking for a low-cost airline purely and not fussed with baggage or potential customer service issues, their prices can't be beaten.

Our Rating: 2.3/5

  • Several routes, especially within Colombia and Peru
  • Poor customer service
  • Hidden fees
  • Little luggage allowance

Simple Flying

Viva aerobus launches a loyalty program: what to know.

Passengers will be able to redeem their points for new flights, additional services, bus tickets, and many more products.

The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus has introduced Doters, its new loyalty , and rewards program. Travelers will now be able to earn Doters Points every time they travel with Viva onboard its 2,432 weekly flights across Mexico, the United States, Cuba, and Colombia.

Doters, the new loyalty program

Mexican airlines currently have several loyalty programs. Aeromexico has the famous Club Premier; Volaris has the v.pass (not specifically a loyalty program, but a monthly subscription program that allows you to fly within Mexico once a month), and now Viva Aerobus has launched Doters.

On Monday, Viva Aerobus announced the launch of Doters, its first loyalty and rewards program. It will allow everyone to earn Doters Points and redeem them for new flights, additional services, bus tickets, and many more products. It will also improve the passenger experience .

To be part of Doters, completely free of charge, passengers only need to fill out a simple form either on the Viva Aerobus website, the Viva App, the Doters website, or the Doters App. In less than a minute, passengers will begin to enjoy the benefits of the airline's rewards program.

After this registration, each purchase, both in Viva Aerobus and in any other company that is part of the Doters partner network, will add Doters Points. Points can be used to purchase or complement the payment of airline tickets, add additional services to the flight such as extra luggage, and VIP seat selection and even pay Mexico’s airport fee, known as TUA, among other benefits.

Three levels

Viva Aerobus CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua said that now, in addition to the ultra-low-cost fares, the new Doters loyalty and rewards program allows passengers’ money to go even further. “With the formula of traveling, earning Doters Points, and access to more benefits and flights, we enhance the travel experience, recognize our customers for their preference, and we continue to make flying accessible to more and more people,” he said.

The Doters loyalty program has three levels: green, silver, and gold, each of which offers exclusive benefits to its members. Viva Aerobus travelers can, depending on their level, have free regular seat selection, priority boarding and documentation, free additional baggage, and priority attention at the Viva Aerobus contact center and Doters, among other benefits.

Everyone starts at the most basic level, the color green. To get to the silver level, one has to earn 12,500 Doter points, and 25,000 to get to the gold level. Green level points are valid for 12 months; silver level points are valid for 24 months, and gold level points are valid for 36 months.

Bus line partners

Viva Aerobus partnered up with three bus lines to launch Doters. The bus lines are ETN Turistar, Costaline, and Autovías La Línea. By traveling with these companies, Doters members will also be able to accumulate points. For every Mexican peso spent with any of the bus lines, the passenger receives one Doters point. For every two pesos spent with Viva Aerobus, the passenger gets one Doters point.

“We are confident that with this easy-to-use loyalty and rewards program, we will continue to grow as one of the leading airlines in Mexico while rewarding our passengers for their preference and trust. We project to have more than 3 million members on Doters in the first year. Thus, together, Viva, Doters, and its network of partners, we will make travelers live more unforgettable experiences,” said Pablo Sordo, Director of Commercial Strategy for Viva Aerobus and Doters.

Viva Aerobus is a low-cost Mexican airline based in Mexico City. It is one of the low-cost airlines in Mexico and has become one of the most popular airlines in the country.

The airline operates over five routes to more than 25 cities throughout Mexico. In addition to domestic flights, Viva Aerobus also offers international flights to some destinations in the United States.

Read on, so you will take a closer look at Viva Aerobus baggage fees and determine whether or not they are worth it.

You can check out the best Tips On How To Get A Cheap Airline Ticket .

The Different Types of Baggage Fees

Regarding air travel, Viva Aerobus is known for offering some of the best baggage fees in the industry. With various categories of baggage fees available, passengers can choose the cost that works best for them.

Here’s a look at the different types of baggage fees offered by Viva Aerobus:

The following is part of the Viva Aerobus (VB) luggage policy for average basic fares.

  • Free – for one personal item
  • Free – for one carry-on bag
  • Baggage check costs vary by ticket class
  • Depending on the route, there may be additional fees for overweight and oversized luggage.
  • Sports equipment, subject to any costs that may apply

You may also want to check out the Best Ways On How to Find Cheap Flights and Snag the Best Deals .

What is the carry-on baggage policy for Viva Aerobus (VB)?

As long as each piece of luggage fits within 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm, Viva Aerobus (VB) enables each passenger to bring one carry-on luggage.

  • A personal item such as a purse, briefcase, laptop bag, or camera bag is also permitted for passengers to carry.
  • The combined weight of the three items cannot be greater than 10 kg.
  • Additional luggage weighing up to 15 kilograms costs USD 60.
  • 20 kg or fewer additional bags: USD 70
  • Additional luggage weighing up to 25 kg costs USD 80.
  • No more than 32 kilograms per additional bag; USD 100

What’s Included in the Fee?

When you purchase a ticket with Viva Aerobus, the fare includes one personal item and one checked bag for free. Additional checked baggage fees apply for any additional bags.

The fees vary based on the route, weight, and size of the bag, as well as whether or not you check in online or at the airport.

For flights to and from Mexico, checked bags must be at most 23kg (50 lbs) for Economy Class or 32kg (70 lbs) for Business Class and may not exceed 158cm (62in) in total dimensions.

Passengers will be charged an excess baggage fee if a bag exceeds these limitations.

Viva Aerobus also offers an extra baggage allowance for sports equipment such as golf clubs, skis, and snowboards.

The fees for this service depend on the route and type of equipment, but they typically range from $30 – $150 per item.

Passengers can also purchase travel insurance and additional perks such as priority boarding, lounge access, and seat selection for an additional fee.

How Much Does it Cost?

Regarding Viva Aerobus baggage fees, there are pros and cons to consider. The costs are lower than many other airlines, making them an excellent option for travelers on a budget.

Additionally, the amount of baggage allowed for free is more generous than most other airlines. However, the fee can add up quickly for those traveling with multiple bags.

Overall, if you’re a light traveler and want to save some money on airfare, Viva Aerobus’ baggage fees are a good choice.

But if you’re planning on bringing a lot of luggage, you may want to consider another airline with a more generous baggage allowance.

According to  kiwi , they give you a variety of flights with Viva Aerobus, including prices ranging from $54 for a ticket from Mexico City to Tijuana to $40 for a flight from Cancun to Guadalajara in Mexico to $76 for a flight from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Monterrey.

Beginning at $120 for a round-trip ticket from Chihuahua to Mazatlán, Mexico, and $174 for a ticket from Los Angeles to Mexico City.

Why is the baggage allowance 23kg?

Due to comparable weight restrictions in health and safety standards, the 23-kilogram limit is in place.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) published a size guideline for bags intended for hand/carry-on baggage in 2015 due to the considerable diversity in these limitations.

Final Thoughts Viva Aerobus baggage fees

Since Viva Aerobus commenced its operations in November 2006, they have been known for its special baggage and flight prices.

Making them commendable and trustworthy to fly with, so when next you want to take a flight from Mexico, let the name “Viva Aerobus” come to mind.

If it's all on 1 ticket, under normal circumstances it should be fine.

Though there's always a very, very slight chance you miss it if your first flight is arriving very late though again they wouldn't continue to sell a flight if regularly they can't keep the timing right for people to make connections.

Though if all on 1 ticket and the tiny % you miss that flight they should re-book you on the next available flight .

Hey that's really helpful... Thanks...

That's what I am worried about. I think it's all in one ticket so it should be okay hopefully.
