10 Best Cruise Lines for Gluten Free Food

Last updated on March 7th, 2024 at 01:23 pm

A quick background…

A Gluten-free diet excludes the protein gluten, which includes the exclusion of wheat, rye, and barley. The diet has been known to aid people who are diagnosed with celiac disease in managing its symptoms.

This form of diet has become widely popular among people who aren’t diagnosed with a gluten-related medical condition. It has been claimed that going through this nutritional regime improves health, aids in weight loss, and increases energy, although more research is still needed.

People who adhere to gluten-free diets ( like Keto for example ) and who would like to go on a cruise have to go through the extra burden of meal planning, restaurant research, and preparing packed food and items from their kitchens.

There is good news for those people as all cruise lines, without exception, now offer gluten-free meals.

All a prospective cruiser has to do is to make the request in advance and give the cruise line notification prior to their sail date.  Notifying a cruise line of an incoming gluten-free cruiser (or cruisers, as is more usually the case) gives them ample time to order larger quantities of gluten-free ingredients.

This allows the cruise line plenty of time to lay in the amounts necessary and ensure that all requests are met.

For those who are interested in taking a gluten-free cruise, we have listed below 10 of the best cruise lines for gluten-free food.

1. Royal Caribbean

The Royal Caribbean menu is incredibly helpful for those who are trying to avoid gluten. Amazingly, every night they provide at least one (on most occasions several) gluten-free appetizer, a main dish, and dessert. They offer gluten-free sandwiches, pastries, and pizzas from separate cooking areas to avoid cross-contamination.

Be sure to contact your travel advisor, Certified Vacation Planner, or the cruise line directly and request that the gluten-free remark be noted in your reservation details.

If your reservation is made online through royalcaribbean.com, add your request to the “update personal information.” section.

To cover all your bases, you may also send an email request to [email protected] ; be sure to include in your e-mail the guests’ names, booking number, ship name, and sail date, then your email will receive an automated response.

If you want to experience the ultimate in a gluten-free vacation cruise, Royal Caribbean and AMAWaterways have partnered to offer Celiac Cruise . Offering cruises around the world, this offers a worry-free experience.

Traveling can be a challenging undertaking that can make staying at home the best, but not the most fun, option.

Now the whole family can experience new places and make lasting memories without the anxiety that accompanies menu options that may or may not be truly gluten-free. You can explore places like the Caribbean, Greece, Alaska, the Danube River and Amsterdam.

AUTHOR NOTES (2023)

In 2019 we were seated with a guest who was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease. She communicated clearly with the waiter and the assistant at each meal. Each interaction was respectful and they went above and beyond to provide a safe dining experience.

However, recently we were made aware that Royal Caribbean’s new menu as of January 2023, isn’t offering Gluten-Free options as freely as it did in the past. Long-time cruisers who sailed RCL for over 20 years have not been happy with the Gluten-Free options.

2. Carnival Cruise Line

Since Carnival has a large fleet of ships and is noted for being a famous commercial cruise line, they are adequately stocked all the time for gluten-free cruisers.

Without exception, all of Carnival’s cruise ships serve gluten-free bread, different kinds of pasta, pizzas, and desserts.  They also have a well-known restaurant called Guy’s Burger Joints, where you can get bun less burgers and French fries as gluten-free options.

In the Main Dining Room, the evening meal will have a “featured gluten-free” menu that includes an appetizer, entree and dessert. In the past, although Carnival offered gluten-free options, the icons and notes on the menus were not consistent.

The dedicated gluten-free menus will take the guesswork out of ordering. Just make sure to ask your waiter for the menu. Carnival also offers Menu Mate, which is a food ingredient program that helps accommodate guests that have food allergies.

Staff enters dietary restrictions into a software program that sorts through all options and displays those items which are allergen-free for the guest. You can find a Menu Mate tablet on display near the Lido buffet stations.

Gluten-free beer is also available onboard Carnival’s cruise ships, and if you request ahead of time, the chefs can bake you a gluten-free cake.

3. Cunard Line

A cruise line committed to providing deluxe accommodations on the seas, the Cunard team oversees dietary specifications in a professional manner.

All of the ships in the line employ specialist head waiters and chefs to manage special dietary requests, and they’ll coordinate with you about the options available.

Gluten-free breads are available throughout meal times, and sauces are whipped up separately to meet dietary requirements. On top of this, gluten-free kinds of pasta, biscuits, cookies, and cereals are provided throughout the cruise.

To ensure you receive gluten-free service aboard your Cunard cruise, you are required to inform your operator at the time of booking and confirm the request at the purser’s desk when you board the ship.

4. Holland America Cruises

They made dining for cruisers with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities more convenient by marking food items without gluten with the symbol of wheat next to their descriptions. Customers can also request gluten-free buns in their Dive-In burgers.

For your special dietary needs that require assistance, you may contact Holland America Cruises Ship Services at least three weeks prior to your departure at 1–800–541–1576.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian offers a handful of gluten-free options onboard as part of their regular menu, including pre-packaged cookies & toast. But with advanced notice, they can prepare gluten-free pastries, pasta, and even pancakes.

Gluten-free dessert options include ice cream, souffle, and creme brulee. Always coordinate with your head waiter, and Norwegian Cruise Line will pull out all the stops whenever possible.

6. Princess Cruises

They offer a variety of gluten-free products such as bread, cereal, spaghetti, and macaroni. They have created a special gluten-free mix that they use to make cookies, cakes, muffins, pancakes, and pizza crust. Princess Cruise will accommodate guests with any special dietary needs.

Like any other cruise line, it is crucial to notify them in advance, at least 35 to 65 days in writing, depending on the particular cruise you’ll be booking.

Another perk of booking a balcony cabin or above, by giving them a head’s up, you can order a deluxe balcony breakfast or dinner (for a fee,) and they will include items such as gluten-free muffins, French toast, pancakes or kinds of pasta.

7. Disney Cruises

Disney theme parks have earned a successful reputation when it comes to accommodating special dietary needs, and Disney cruises did not fall far from the tree.

Simply make a note of your gluten intolerance or any other nutritional restrictions when booking your trip.

Onboard Disney Cruises, they sell their famous gluten-free popcorn, grab one and take it to the cabin for a snack.

During breakfast, you will not be limited with their pastry spread such as muffins, toast & pancakes. To keep up with their awesomeness, they also prepare gluten-free donuts. You can wrap up your dinner with gluten-free desserts.

8. Seabourn Cruise Line

Famous for providing luxurious cruises, Seabourn Cruise Lines guarantees your gluten-free needs are met by arranging a variety of gluten-free pastries, and even breadsticks.

All menu items are provided with a clear gluten-free label. Chefs are fully equipped to make any menu item as long as requests are made in advance.  You can specify your gluten-free needs on Seabourn’s pre-cruise online portal prior to cruising.

9. Azamara Cruises

Though Azamara is a small cruise line, they can provide the necessary accommodations for gluten-free cruisers.  Specify your gluten-free orders the night before, they can make pancakes, waffles, and other items.

You can enjoy gluten-free dinners, particularly in their 2 specialty restaurants, Aqualina and Prime C. They offer a choice of whole-grain dinner rolls, hamburger & hot dog buns, various gluten-free pasta, risotto, rice noodles, some soups, gluten-free soy sauce, pancakes, waffles, plain bagels, muffins & cookies.

If you are planning to book a suite, expect the butler to drop by with coffee and tea along with the most delicious gluten-free scones, jelly, and whipped cream

10. Regent Seven Seas Cruise Line

A luxury cruise line, Regent Seven Seas goes above and beyond in making a gluten-free alternative for almost any item on the menu.  In addition to all the gluten-free staples such as bread and various kinds of pasta, Regent goes the extra mile in ensuring that you don’t miss out on delicious dishes.

For instance, at Regent’s Chocoholics high-tea service, offer an entire gluten-free menu, consisting of finger sandwiches and gluten-free desserts such as meringue and fruit tart.

Additionally, MSC Cruise Lines

Another cruise line that caters to its passengers gluten free needs, is MSC. MSC has partnered with the Italian Celiac Association to create an extensive gluten-free menu.

These options are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner at all of the restaurants onboard the Preziosa, Fantasia, Orchestra, Poesia, Musica, Splendida, Magnifica and Divina.

MSC follows strict regulations when preparing their gluten-free menus onboard, and all gluten-free products are stored in designated areas and one kitchen on each ship is reserved exclusively for the preparation of gluten-free dishes.

Head over to Adventures of a Gluten Free Globetrekker , which is a gluten free travel blog. On this website, there are posted MSC’s gluten free breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.  There are also gluten-free lunches that you can get packed for shore days.

Communication is Key to a Successful Gluten-Free Cruise

Cruise lines are very good about going above and beyond when it comes to meeting the requirements of guests with special needs .

The most important element in the success of a cruise with a Gluten-Free diet is communication. Communicate with the cruise line and your wait staff. Always be kind, courteous, and respectful and you will be sure to have a great gluten-free cruise!

Cruising On Viking Ocean Cruises With a Food Allergy (Gluten)

Amanda Souza

Of course, when I cruise to various places around the world it is still important that I feel safe and informed. This is one of the many reasons that I enjoy exploring Europe with Viking Cruises. From the helpful, caring waiters and waitresses all the way to the careful, conscientious chefs and kitchen staff, I could not be more at home aboard Viking Sea for my first (and hopefully not last) Mediterranean cruise.

Anyone who has been on a cruise before knows the drill on embarkation day: check-in, board, and head straight for the buffet. Well, things were no different when my husband and I boarded the ship. When we arrived at the buffet I found the first worker I could who wasn’t already occupied and asked who I should speak to about my allergy. She directed me to the Restaurant Supervisor who keeps a “watch list” of all those passengers with special diet restrictions and food allergies, my good buddy, Mark! (Mark is officially my favorite man on board, no offence to my wonderful husband).

He added me to his list and then let me know that for lunch only the buffet is open (not the Restaurant)….Anyone with Celiac knows what happened next…yep, my heart leaped into my throat and began strangling me! BUFFET???  He continued to explain that each time I came to the buffet I would need to ask for the chef and he would walk me through the buffet to let me know what I could and could not have.

Most every staff member on-board appears to be extra knowledgeable about the dangers of gluten allergies and Celiac Disease. This alone has made me feel safe and comfortable throughout our cruise.

I was very surprised to find that most of the options the buffet had were prepared gluten free. For those items which are not gluten free they are usually kept separate from those which are. They have rice flower on-board as well so that they are usually able to make a gluten free option of the items available for you upon request if you are willing to wait for them.

Each station of the buffet is well monitored and the kitchen is open so that you can see through to the other side of the buffet. If you are still concerned about eating at a buffet, which is completely understandable, the kitchen staff is willing to prepare pasta, steak, or fish and serve it to you at your table.

Breakfast in the buffet is the same each day with everything you would expect to see. There is a station for fruit and yogurt. At the next station, scrambled eggs are always available but they also have a staff member there to prepare eggs any way that you like right there at the buffet. They also have bacon but (as is standard at any buffet) the bottom of the bacon tray is lined with bread so that was not an option for me. However, if you go to the Restaurant for breakfast this is not an issue.

If you decide to have a quick dinner in the buffet one or two nights of your cruise you will not be disappointed. Every night there is a seafood and sushi station at the buffet and all but one of the types of sushi they offer are made without soy sauce. This made me one happy lady as I absolutely love vegetarian sushi but am rarely able to have it back home.

For dinner in the Restaurant they do have a system in place for those with allergies to pre-order. The pre-order menu is delivered to your room each afternoon for the following night. However, I never noticed a difference in wait time whether I turned in the pre-order or not. When you arrive they give your pre-order form to the waiter and he goes over it with you and puts it in just as he would if you were ordering right in that moment. Of course, my friend Mark always checks on me and makes sure that the wait staff is taking excellent care of me.

You can order just about anything offered on the menu and they will alter it to fit your needs, with the exception of items like Beef Wellington. There is a wide variety of options to choose from with some being always available and others changing nightly so you don’t feel like you have to eat the same thing every night.

Now to talk about my favorite part of dinner, dessert! There are a few option in the dining room to choose from but somehow I ended up eating the same one every night that we dined in the Restaurant. The Creme Brulee is the best I’ve ever had. I absolutely love it and could not bring myself to pick anything else.

My favorite thing about Viking is that I’m not chained to the main dining room only like I have been with other cruise lines in the past. Viking Ocean’s Italian restaurant, Manfredi’s, is my favorite specialty restaurant at sea. I don’t know what I would do with myself if I was not able to eat there! Every time I have been there I have felt completely safe and taken care of. The staff is excellent and the food is perfection.

The number one choice for me when we dine at Manfredi’s is the Ribeye. I have a hard time ordering anything else because it is the most flavoring, tender steak and never disappoints. However, though the steak is at the top of my list, you wouldn’t at all be disappointed with a bowl of gluten-free pasta at Manfredi’s either. I have also had my personal favorite, Caprese Salad, as a starter every meal but you can have the pasta as a starter as well if desired.

viking river cruise gluten free

Dessert at Manfredi’s has quite a few options to choose from. You definitely can’t go wrong with a couple scoops of Gelato (chocolate is my favorite) but there are other options such as a flowerless chocolate cake-like dessert or traditional Italian cream and fruit. Make sure you save room for this part of the meal because it is well worth it!

Damaged Lifeboat Leads to Royal Caribbean Cancellations on Upcoming Cruise

Royal caribbean changes their logo, carnival reminds passengers of dress code violation that could spell big trouble, carnival cruise ship will remain at sea an extra day, related articles, how to convince my family to go on a cruise when they want a land vacation, cruise lines with the best pizza, complimentary and pay restaurants, i’ve always booked an inside cabin. should i upgrade to a balcony is it worth it.

Buffets are not good for people who have celiacs disease. The threat of cross contamination is so great. People put spoons in gluten filled food and then use that same spoon in the gluten free food, thus contaminating it. Do they have options for ordering meals?

All Things Cruise

Viking River Cruises Dining

Viking offers extraordinarily well-designed cruises that bring you closer to the cultures of the world. Its intimate, inclusive itineraries are designed to help you explore nuances of your destination: its food, culture, people and customs.

Destination-Focused Dining

Whatever your tastes, Viking River Cruises believes dining is an important part of your journey, both on shore and on board. Viking’s highly trained chefs are passionate about food and committed to providing an enriching culinary experience, whether you’re savoring authentic regional specialties or American classics. Dining areas—from the elegant Restaurant to the Sun Deck and Aquavit Terrace, the al fresco dining area at the bow of the ship—are the ideal setting for hospitable, attentive and personalized service.

What Are The Onboard Dining Times?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the ship’s restaurant; however, you may opt for breakfast or lunch in the Lounge, or take a plate to the Sun Deck. Room service is not available. While serving times can vary depending upon excursions and cruise schedules, they are generally:

  • Breakfast: 7:00 AM–9:30 AM
  • Lunch: 12:00 PM–2:00 PM
  • Dinner: 7:00 PM

Hot coffee and tea from the coffee station, as well as bottled water in your stateroom, are complimentary throughout your voyage. Soft drinks, wine and beer are complimentary during lunch and dinner service; a charge applies outside these hours. You may bring local wines on board, and the Maître d’ will be happy to serve your wine without any corkage fee.

Every meal has vegetarian options on the menu, and chefs are able to prepare low-salt or gluten-free cuisine. Guests requiring special diets such as diabetic or low-cholesterol meals should have their agent alert Viking Cruises one month prior to departure and then guests should inform the Maître d’ when on board. The chefs will make every effort to accommodate these requests.

Gluten-Free on a Viking Ocean Cruise from Rome to Barcelona

They say that tossing coins in Rome’s Trevi Fountain assures your return. Decades ago—on our first trip to Europe as newlyweds—I tossed those coins and my wish finally came true. We sailed from Rome, Italy to Barcelona, Spain on a 930-passenger ocean cruiser last month.

Rome skyline

I have sailed with Viking on three previous cruises, and am impressed with how they meet my gluten-free needs and their customer service attitude. So, off we went for an adventure that also included Sicily, Sardenia, Tunis (Tunisia), Algiers (Algeria), and Valencia, Spain.

We spent two days in Rome on our own before boarding our ship, the Viking Star, and every restaurant had gluten-free options. Our hotel, the Grand Hotel Palace, had gluten-free spaghetti with clams and it was delicious. Even the breakfast buffet at the hotel offered gluten-free bread.

GF Bread at Grand Hotel Palace in Rome

One night, we walked to nearby Il Piccolo Mondo restaurant, and they made my gluten-free Tiramisu with gluten-free cookies. After two days of seafood and pasta in Rome, I craved meat so I had a gluten-free hamburger at Hard Rock Café.

Hard Rock Cafe GF hamburgers

Rome is a vibrant city, rich with history and we saw all the usual sights: Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps. But the highlight was the Vatican where Pope Francis spoke to the crowds outside St. Peter’s Basilica to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. I learned that the Vatican City is somewhat like its own country within Rome and has its own government, police, etc.

The Food on a Viking Ocean Cruise

Cruise ships have an abundance of food, available in multiple restaurants at almost every hour of the day. In fact, if you miss a meal you can always order 24-hour room service to your cabin. You won’t go hungry on a  cruise ship!

Early on, I met my hero—Head Waiter Boban, from Macedonia. His job was to make sure I ate well. Thanks to his communications with the kitchen staff (99 chefs for 930 passengers) I had delicious gluten-free bread for toast in the morning and gluten-free buns for hamburgers. You can have gluten-free pizza, French toast, pancakes, and so on. Just ask a day ahead so they have time to prepare it.

Viking GF hamburger

There were usually at least one or two gluten-free choices for dessert, often a mousse, pudding, and the usual gelato and sorbets. Boban served me Dark Chocolate Flourless Cake and two kinds of soufflé: Dark Chocolate and Grand Marnier.

Chocolate souffle

One of my favorite naturally-gluten-free desserts was the chocolate fondue with fresh fruit. On my final evening, Boban brought me two desserts: my favorite Crème Brulee (flavored with bourbon) and a flourless Chocolate Cake. I know I gained weight on this cruise, thanks to Boban.

Creme Brulee on Viking

One night I ordered gluten-free Fettucini Carbonara in Manfredi’s, an Italian restaurant on the ship. I had never eaten carbonara anywhere but in my own kitchen so this was a real treat.

The Process: How You Get Gluten-Free Food on a Cruise

You need to be proactive! I notified Viking of my gluten-free needs when I booked the cruise, but it is important to “announce” your needs directly with the Viking staff right after you board the ship. I have found that this is necessary to remind them of your needs.

Your “announcement” starts the following process: Every evening, Boban would deliver the next day’s dinner menu to my cabin. I circled my choices (for appetizer, entrée, and dessert) and returned it to the dining room the next morning. When I arrived for dinner, my server already knew what my choices were and made sure I got the right dish.

We usually ate in the World Café (the buffet restaurant) which was really quite good and had two major benefits: it was super-fast because we could simply choose our food on-the-spot from the vast array of choices and it also gave us a chance to taste a wider variety of different dishes. As we progressed from country to country, the kitchen often featured a dish from that country (e.g., risotto in Italy).

Yet another advantage to the World Café is that it featured an open-kitchen so there were lots of chefs that I could ask about the contents of any dish. They were all very knowledgeable, but they didn’t hesitate to ask a superior about the dish’s ingredients to make sure I was safe. One of the new additions to the buffet since my last cruise in 2016 was that gluten-free dishes were labeled “gluten-free.”

My Tips for You The major thing I learned about getting the food you want on a cruise ship is that you must ask. For example, on the first day right after we boarded the ship I perused the array of desserts in the buffet and only saw fruit. I wanted more. Only after three requests, each request escalating to someone with more authority and finally ending with Head Waiter Boban, did I get a delicious chocolate flourless cake. If you want other baked goods, be sure to pre-order them the day before (except for the bread, which is always on hand), because these items are not baked unless a passenger asks for it.

Final Days in Barcelona

After disembarking the ship, we spent two more days in Barcelona. It is truly beautiful and very much influenced by Antoni Gaudi, a Catalonian architect. If you read Dan Brown’s recent book, Origin , many of Gaudi’s building are featured in the book such as Casa Mila and La Sagrada Familia, which is the most unusual church you may ever see. Another overwhelming site is Montserrat about an hour outside Barcelona, where a monastery sits nestled alongside a massive granite mountain.

Paella in Barcelona

We ate seafood Paella twice while in Barcelona and Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes with aioli) We truly loved the Spanish hot chocolate, which is thicker than American hot chocolate and has a thin pudding consistency. Churros are typically dipped in it (but they are not gluten-free, so I didn’t do this). Rich and creamy, this hot drink is not as sweet as our American hot chocolate either.

Airline Food

We flew from Denver to Toronto to Rome on Air Canada and my gluten-free meal was just fine.

Air Canada GF meal

However, on my return home on Lufthansa from Barcelona to Munich to Denver, they didn’t have my gluten-free meal due to a miscommunication so they gave me a few salads to tide me over. Luckily, I had some snack bars and pistachios but the moral of this story is always have food with you when you board an airline, just in case.

Gluten Free Dining on Viking

Hello Everyone -

We have booked the Viking Sea for a November 2017 sailing. My in laws are coming with us. My MIL needs to be gluten free for medical reasons (celiac). Has anyone had experience with this onboard? We have had our travel agent note this on our reservation and want to prepare accordingly for how Viking manages this. We have had very good experiences on Celebrity and Carnival. Hoping Viking is similar.

Here's info from the Viking oceans website

***SPECIAL FOOD REQUIREMENTS? Every meal has vegetarian options and our chefs will make efforts to accommodate special requests. Guests requiring special diets (low salt, diabetic, gluten-free and low cholesterol) should alert us 90 days prior to departure and inform the Maître d’ when on board. Contact us.***

We've done 8 river cruises with Viking and have our first ocean cruise with them in March, while, not completely lactose intolerant, I have "issues' and they've always been excellent. Enjoy your travel with Viking.

Viking is ready for all food issues. There is a special number on the website (in the FAQs, I think) that you should call 90 days in advance to let them know of your dietary issues and then inform then again once on board.

Thanks for the feedback!! Very helpful.

I can add reassurance to the previous posts that Viking will go way beyond expectations to address your needs. A friend who traveled with us on a river cruise sent in three pages (yes, 3) of food allergies. The chef met with her every morning to plan her menu for the day. I don't know that you'll get the chef meeting with you, but your needs will surely be considered. BTW, our friend is going with us on the Sea in September. I can report to you on her experience.

Thank you Krisval!! This is so helpful.

Viking was great - with my shellfish allergy we notified them in advance and then again when we first were on board. Food allergies are taken very seriously and they were very accommodating about, including substitutions of sauces in any restaurant, or a course (Chefs Table) when needed.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

This dense moist cake is like a giant chocolate truffle—crunchy on top with a deliciously fudgy center. Extremely rich yet so simple to make, it is popular all year round. It is gluten-free and you can even make it in advance—just take it out of the refrigerator an hour before serving. It tastes even better the second day.

  • 8 oz (227 g) dark chocolate, chopped
  • 3 Tbsp (21 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp (1 g) baking powder

Gluten Free Dining on Viking

Hello Everyone -

We have booked the Viking Sea for a November 2017 sailing. My in laws are coming with us. My MIL needs to be gluten free for medical reasons (celiac). Has anyone had experience with this onboard? We have had our travel agent note this on our reservation and want to prepare accordingly for how Viking manages this. We have had very good experiences on Celebrity and Carnival. Hoping Viking is similar.
