Established in 1919, the park offers activities for all ability levels, whether you want to do an intense hike down into the canyon and sleep under the stars (with a backcountry permit, of course) or simply want to saunter along the South Rim Trail, an easy walking path with views that wow.

Though it’s somewhat difficult to get to this small island nation southwest of Sri Lanka, that also means it’s incredibly private and secluded, which makes it the perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic beach getaway.

And don’t worry about getting bored, either — explore the water by snorkeling or scuba diving, relax in the spa or wander around the bustling Male’ Fish Market.

For nightlife and shopping, Las Ramblas is always bustling; for an enriching arts experience, follow the progression of famed artist Pablo Picasso at Museo Picasso.

This island in southern Thailand, which is just an hour flight from Bangkok, is surrounded by the Andaman Sea, so white sandy beaches abound. If a stunning sunset is what you’re after, head to Promthep Cape, the southernmost point on the island and a popular spot for photo-ops. For views of the island and beyond, climb to the top of the massive alabaster statue called Big Buddha.

You can even learn something during your vacation by visiting the Soi Dog Foundation, an innovative animal shelter that’s fighting the meat trade and taking care of the thousands of stray cats and dogs in the area.

And then, of course, there’s the city’s art. Stroll through Rome, and you’ll stumble upon some of the greatest treasures the world has ever seen — an astonishing collection of frescoes, paintings, ceilings and fountains created by icons like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini.

After all that exploration, take advantage of ample opportunities to eat and drink, including at several Michelin-starred restaurants. City staples include suppli (deep-fried balls of risotto, mozzarella and ragu meat sauce) and cacio e pepe (a deceptively simple mix of al-dente pasta, pecorino romano and fresh black pepper).

What to Know Before You Go to Rome

6. London, England

Modern bridge London

English writer Samual Johnson once said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

From live performances of Shakespeare to truly world-class (and free!) museums like the National Gallery, London will enrich your mind and enliven your senses. Of course, no visit would be complete without a stop at Buckingham Palace to see the famous stone-faced guards outside and the 19 lavish State Rooms inside (though, unfortunately, you can’t see the queen’s private quarters). Another must-see landmark is the Tower of London, the historic castle on the north side of the River Thames.

5. Tahiti, French Polynesia

Tahiti, French Polynesia

Flavorful French cuisine, top-notch resorts, warm waters — need we say more? Though Tahiti can be pricey, travelers say it’s so worth it.

The largest of the 118 French Polynesian islands, Tahiti is split into two main regions (connected by a land bridge). Tahiti Nui, the larger region, is home to the island’s capital Papeete and surfing hotspot Papenoo Beach, while Tahiti Iti, the smaller region, offers more seclusion and the bright white sands of La Plage de Maui.

4. Maui, Hawaii

Rocky beach in Maui

If you’re short on time or you just can’t decide which Hawaiian island to visit, Maui is right in the sweet spot: not too big, not too small, but just right.

There are five regions to explore on Maui, including the popular West Maui and South Maui, home to some of the island’s best-known attractions and beaches (Wailea Beach is in South Maui, for example). But don’t overlook East Maui, where you can travel along the Road to Hana, or the Upcountry, where you can explore the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakala.

What to Know Before You Go to Maui

Fun fact: How’s this for a selling point? Maui has more beach than any other Hawaiian island — 60 miles of it, with red, white and black sand.

3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora overwater bungalows

Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

What to Know Before You Go to Bora Bora

Bora Bora Island

Where to stay: Conrad Bora Bora Nui

2. Paris, France

Paris from the Arc de Triumph

Paris has it all — incredible cuisine, legendary landmarks and centuries of history. Those are just some of the reasons it’s the second-best place to visit in the world.

Though you’ll want to spend your time hitting up popular tourist spots like the Eiffel Tower and the Musee d’Orsay, you should also carve out time to explore other parts of Paris — the city’s 20 diverse neighborhoods, called arrondissements, for instance. Standouts include the 2nd arrondissement, which touts covered passages and some of the city’s hippest restaurants, and the romantic 18th arrondissement, with charming squares, cafes and bars, set apart from the city’s more tourist-packed areas.

1. South Island, New Zealand

Milford Sound

South Island, the larger but less populated of the two islands that make up New Zealand, earn this top-spot honor for its gorgeous scenery, adrenelin-pumping experiences and affordability.

The 33.5-mile hike on Milford Sound, which is limited to 90 people at a time, is considered one of the world’s best treks, with stops at Lake Te Anau, suspension bridges, a mountain pass and the tallest waterfall in the country, Sutherland Falls.

For a heart-pumping experience, you can jump out of a helicopter while flying over the Harris Mountains with skis on your feet. Still not satisfied? Roam Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area, and explore the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, two of the most accessible glaciers in the world.

Con Dao Vietnam

Con Dao, Vietnam

Con Dao is often overlooked as a beach destination in  Vietnam , and I almost don’t want to share it so it stays that way! Located off the Southern Coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is a smaller island with very little commercial development. With this, the beaches are quiet and the few resort options allow for a special retreat. The beaches are long with soft sand and are great for light water sports like SUP and kayaking—but are just a short kayak away from a beautiful reef for snorkeling. The downtown area has a cute seaside atmosphere with little restaurants, and there are connections to history if you’re interested in exploring more.

Best things to do:  Watch the turtles hatch: On the neighboring island, you can head over at night and stay at the ranger station where you will be informed when they spot a mother turtle laying her eggs. If you’re there in August, it’s likely you’ll catch this magical experience. Stay through the morning when the turtle sanctuary supports the release of the hatchlings and watch them find their way to the big blue sea.

If you’re interested in history, I recommend a visit to the Con Dao Prison which was built during the French colonial era and used through the Vietnam-American War.

How to get there:  From Saigon, take a commercial flight to the island. The flight is about one hour long and Vietnam Airlines runs multiple flights a day.

For travelers looking to get off the beaten path look no further than Hawaiis smallest inhabited island—Lanai. Only nine...

Lanai, Hawaii

For travelers looking to get off the beaten path, look no further than Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island—Lanai. Only nine miles off the coast of Maui , this quaint island was originally home to pineapple plantations but now offers the perfect mix of rugged adventure and ultra-luxe relaxation. Arrival to the island is an experience in and of itself, whether you take a scenic 30-minute flight from Honolulu or watch for dolphins on a 45-minute ferry from Maui.

On arrival, expect a swift transfer to your hotel, either the ocean-side paradise of the  Four Seasons Resort Lanai or the adults-only wellness retreat at the  Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort . From there, you can fill your days as you wish, from relaxing on quiet beaches to exploring the island by boat, 4-by-4 Jeeps, or even horseback—though we definitely recommend a quick jaunt through the “bustling” Lanai City, with only three paved roads and no traffic lights.

Best things to do:  Go horseback riding along wooded valleys and trails, keeping an eye out for axis deer, turkeys, and sheep. Take a tour of the island (with a packed picnic!), or snorkel in the protected marine reserve of Hulopoe Bay to see tropical fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks. Be sure to also visit Keahiakawelo, Lanai’s “Garden of the Gods,” to see the unique, lunar-like landscapes.

How to get there: Lanai Air offers 30-minute nonstop flights from Honolulu to the island, or you can take a 45-minute ferry over from Lahaina, Maui.

Mauritius

Mauritius is a fantastic island destination for honeymooners, couples, friends, families with children, and even solo travelers —really anyone looking for beautiful, warm tropical weather and lots of adventurous things to see and experience. Because of the reef that surrounds most of the island, Mauritius offers calm waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling straight from the shore. The west coast offers the best beaches, the most magical sunsets, and the calmest water conditions. The diving in Mauritius is really enjoyable, with a number of reefs and wrecks to enjoy.

Best things to do:  A few of my favorite things to do in Mauritius, aside from scuba diving and sipping cocktails on the beach, would include swimming with dolphins and turtles, full-day catamaran cruises around the island, and snorkeling at reefs off the coast.

How to get there: There are direct commercial flights from South Africa—most days from Johannesburg and seasonally from Cape Town —making it an easy combination with a South Africa safari or Cape Town city experience. There are also direct flights from Nairobi, which makes it easy to combine after an East Africa safari. There are also direct flights from a number of European hubs such as France, London, Frankfurt, etc, as well as Dubai. Flights are directly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), and then you will take a taxi/cab, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

Mallorca Spain

Mallorca, Spain

The Balearic Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, and Mallorca , which is the third largest island in Spain, is once again on the rise, receiving quality tourism. There are many reasons to visit Mallorca, such as the beauty of the natural environment and the culture that has been preserved there for centuries. Mallorca is as much for those who seek rest as for those who like adventure or history—a very complete island that brings together nature, incredible beaches and coves, city sightseeing, gastronomy, and cultural options.

Best things to do:  Mallorca is known for its wide variety of landscapes and coastlines with impressive cliffs. On your visit, you cannot miss the Serra de Tramuntana region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the northwest of the island, where there are some of the most beautiful Majorcan villages such as Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, and Fornalutx. You can sail, paint a picture by the coast, visit a winery and taste its wines, and meet locals while staying in this area for a few days.

How to get there: You can take a direct flight from Barcelona , Madrid, and other cities in Europe, or you can take a ferry from Barcelona or Valencia.

Koh Samui Thailand

Koh Samui, Thailand

No Thailand trip is complete without a stay on one of the country’s islands, since they boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Koh Samui is particularly wonderful as it offers a nice blend of gorgeous beaches, an array of fantastic resorts, and easy exploration on your own.  Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui does everything right and is a reason to visit alone—it offers well-appointed rooms with beautiful views, beyond exceptional service, fun activities for all ages (try Muay Thai boxing with a former pro in Four Seasons’ own boxing ring with tropical views), a wonderful spa, and delicious food.

Best things to do:  Spend a few hours (preferably at sunset) sailing around Koh Samui and nearby islands with Blue Voyage . Their exceptional yachts and staff will ensure you have a fabulous time while marveling at the scenery. Experience even more of the beauty of Thailand’s islands by stopping for a picnic on a secluded, private beach.

How to get there: Koh Samui is one of the easiest Thailand islands to reach as you can take a 1-hour flight from Bangkok or a 2-hour flight from Singapore.  If you are exploring Northern Thailand prior to visiting the islands, you can take a 1-hour 45-minute flight from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui.

Tofino Vancouver Island Canada

Vancouver Island, Canada

Vancouver Island is home to the charming small city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, known in particular for its British influence and flower gardens (including the famous Butchart Gardens about 30 minutes from the city). Many people don’t realize, however, that Victoria is at the southern tip of the island and that the island is nearly 300 miles long. There’s far more to Vancouver Island than Victoria. One of my favorite places on the island is Tofino , a small town on the far west coast about halfway up the island that’s a great destination for outdoor adventures with fantastic food and lodging.

Best things to do: Whale watching for orcas from Victoria, and for gray whales and humpbacks from Tofino. There’s also bear watching (black bears from Tofino and brown bears/grizzlies from the Campbell River area on the northeast part of the island).

How to get there: Take a flight from Vancouver or Seattle depending on the part of Vancouver Island you’re going to, or by ferry from Vancouver or Port Angeles Washington.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a really special island off the coast of Tanzania, known as Spice Island (and where Freddie Mercury was born). It is rich in history and culture, and it offers beautiful white sandy beaches and warm tropical weather. There are parts of the island that are quite tidal, meaning that the ocean goes out far for a period of the day, making it a great time to explore the animal life left behind in the rock pools. If you want to avoid the tides, the north coast is the least affected and has the best beaches. There is also a really stunning resort off the coast of Zanzibar called Mnemba Island, which is home to  Mnemba Island Lodge , a very exclusive resort, and has some of the best diving nearby.

Best things to do:  Stone Town tours and rooftop dinners, swimming with turtles, sunset show cruises, exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, and diving.

How to get there: There are direct flights from Nairobi and Tanzania, as well as some European countries and Dubai. Flights go directly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), and then you will take a taxi, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands India

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

Of the 572 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory, only 38 are inhabited and 26 open to visitors—and for decades, the atoll’s remoteness and lack of infrastructure, but abundance of coral reefs, have attracted serious divers, adventurous backpackers, and intrepid A-listers like Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet.

Still, hundreds of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are completely unpopulated. Its remoteness was once its purpose: For decades, the British used the Andaman Islands (namely Port Blair) as an inescapable prison for freedom fighters up until independence. Today, visitors can find white sand beaches (including Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, regularly named one of Asia’s best), mangroves, and lush tropical rainforests.

Best things to do: Named after the jagged, black rocks strewn along the coastline, Kalapathar Beach offers an isolated destination for trekking amongst exposed root tangles of 100-year-old trees and aged driftwood carved into captivating designs by the aftereffects of a tsunami, creating a unique, moorish landscape dotted with shells. After the trek, the Kalapathar lagoon just before Butler Bay offers a beautiful secluded spot for swimming and great ocean views through a cave in the cliff face.

In the capital city of Port Blair, Cellular Jail is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourism mascot. A former British prison, Cellular Jail National was something like a holy place for the freedom fighters, who exchanged books, ideas, and debates despite walls and wardens. The Light and Sound Show in the evening is a must-see.

How to get there: Fly into the main airport at Port Blair, which is well-connected on a non-stop service stop from Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. (Note: If you were to fly out of Mumbai, the best course is to fly into Kolkata first and take a connecting flight to Port Blair.) From Port Blair Airport, it’s a 20-minute drive to the Ferry Terminal and a 90-minute ferry ride to Havelock Island.

Nevis

So often I hear people talk about how  Caribbean islands are devoid of history. They most certainly are not—and thankfully, much of its complicated history is starting to be talked about and will hopefully pave the way for more concerted historical landmarks in the future. But while many islands have focused more on blue water and white sand than their historical pasts, Nevis provides the cultural richness some travelers are looking for, with its restaurants and colorful past as a once-bustling Caribbean hub. (If you’re reading this and don't already know Alexander Hamilton was born here, you’re likely in the minority.)

It’s the Goldilocks of the Caribbean: easy to get to (see below), but still enough of a trip to keep the nonstop-flight-only masses away. It has beautiful beaches, while offering a safe environment to eat in off-property restaurants and explore the island outside of the resort. It feels off the beaten path, yet is home to true luxury resorts and charming hotels. (While Nisbet Plantation closed permanently during the pandemic, the  Golden Rock Inn is another boutique gem, and the luxurious  Four Seasons Resort Nevis offers activities for everyone.)

Best things to do: Take a historical tour by taxi around the island—there are several taxi driver-guides that do this, and they will become your best friends over the course of the morning! (Your hotel concierge can help set this up.) Explore the jungle (and Nevis’s voluminous monkey population) in an ATV tour, or charter a sailboat for the day to explore the wildlife by water and experience some of the Caribbean’s famous winds.

How to get there: Nonstop flights fly in season from most East Coast hubs to St. Kitts. After that, a short taxi ride will take you to the water taxi, which typically arrives on Nevis in less than 10 minutes.

Tikehau French Polynesia

Tikehau, French Polynesia

Tikehau is a hidden gem within French Polynesia . Its remoteness means you’ll be close to nature and raw, undisturbed beaches—think crystal clear waters with an abundance of fish and coral reefs, which you can enjoy from an overwater bungalow. Pristine, beautiful pink sand beaches make it ideal for enjoying the sun or watching the perfect sunsets. Book a stay at  Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts (highly recommended), where the pastry chef has mastered French cuisine, from perfect croissants to preparing fish you caught earlier that day.

Best things to do:   Snorkeling and diving are the focus here, given the vast number of fish, untouched corals, and vibrant clams, along with the chance to swim amongst the sharks. Another popular activity is kayaking around the atoll into small bays to explore.

How to get there:  From the U.S., fly to Papeete on the island of Tahiti; from there, use the inter-island flights through Air Tahiti. This may require an overnight stay before catching a flight to Tikehau, followed by a short boat ride to your resort of choice .

Galpagos Islands Ecuador

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

People visit the Galápagos Islands mostly for the incredible wildlife viewing, including endemic species such as the blue-footed boobie, Galápagos penguin, marine iguanas, flamingos, sea lions, and many more. The Galápagos marine reserve is one of the largest and most bio-diverse in the world, making for exceptional diving and snorkeling. This unique archipelago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and consists of 18 islands and more than 100 small islets, located approximately 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.

Best things to do: There is so much to explore in the Galápagos Islands, especially for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers . The best way to see the Galápagos is via sea, visiting all of the diverse islands in the archipelago. Hiking Isla Bartolome will feel like you landed on Mars. This volcanic moonscape is home to Galápagos hawks, blue-footed boobies, and lava lizards. You can also snorkel among sea lions, flightless cormorants, sea turtles, and—our favorite—the Galápagos penguins.

Visit Floreana’s Post Office Bay to participate in a tradition dating back to the 1800s where sailors would leave mail to be retrieved and delivered by another sailor passing through. Today you can do the same by leaving your own postcard and retrieving another postcard for delivery back home. Another exciting adventure is visiting the Highlands of Santa Cruz, where you will experience the high-altitude microclimates where the giant tortoise lives before preparing for their long migration to the shorelines.

How to get there: There are no direct flights into the Galápagos from U.S. or Europe. You’ll need to fly from mainland Ecuador—either Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE)—to the islands. Most people fly into San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) or Seymour Airport (GPS), which serves the island of Baltra and connects to Santa Cruz via water taxi.

Vega Island Norway

Vega Island, Norway

Vega Island is located a few miles south of the Arctic Circle, just off the coast of Helgeland in Norway . You should visit because of its amazing natural beauty, wildlife, wide variety of cool activities, and unique cultural heritage. Vega is part of an unbelievably large archipelago with thousands of small islands, and it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

Best things to do: Sea-kayaking, fishing, hiking, and visiting the unique island community that produces pillows and duvets from the down given by wild eider ducks.

How to get there: First you fly from Oslo to Brønnøysund Airport at Helgeland. From there, you drive to Horn and take a car ferry to Vega.

Big Island Hawaii

Big Island, Hawaii

The island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island , offers a staggering amount of diversity in one destination, making it perfect for travelers that want to have a wide range of experiences. Relax on the white sands of Hapuna Bay or marvel at the jet-black hue of Punalu’u Beach . Feel the heat off the Kilauea Volcano or bundle up to summit snow-capped Mauna Kea. Go off the grid and hike the lush valleys of the Hilo coast or head to the well-known coffee plantations outside of Kona. No matter your interest, there’s an activity to suit your style on the Big Island.

Best things to do: Go snorkeling (or diving) at night with the manta rays, swim in waterfalls in North Kohala, or stargaze at the top of Mauna Kea—one of the best places for stargazing in the world. Also visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the lava tubes, volcanic formations, and steam vents.

How to get there: Flights from the continental U.S. can go directly into Kona, or take a 45-minute flight over from Honolulu.

Lord Howe Island Australia

Lord Howe Island, Australia

This tiny World Heritage-listed island (just over 5 miles long and less than 1 mile at its widest part) packs a real punch, offering a spectacular diversity of landscapes and activities: two towering mountains to hike and dozens of beaches to explore (from the tranquil sheltered lagoon to the uncrowded waves of Blinky’s surf beach), lush rainforests home to spectacular birdlife, and turquoise waters teeming with vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs. Lord Howe Island ’s natural treasures and adventures are complemented by a collection of luxury stays and a laidback Australian coastal lifestyle that invites indulgence and relaxation—but only for an in-the-know privileged few. The island has a cap of just 400 visitors (and a permanent population of less than that) at any one time. Paradise found!

Best things to do: While the temptation may be to simply slip into the private plunge pool on the balcony of your  luxury lodge accommodation or lose yourself in the pages of a good book in the shade of the kentia palms at your private island house, visitors to Lord Howe Island are spoiled for choice with activities that explore the island’s many natural treasures: snorkeling or scuba diving, hiking or biking (the island’s main mode of transport), swimming or surfing, SUP-ing, kayaking, golfing, stargazing, birdwatching, or fishing—just to kick off the list. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to hand-feed the fish at Ned’s Beach, scout for turtles at Settlement Beach, picnic on a secluded beach, or mingle with the locals at a “fish fry.”

How to get there: Located approximately 435 miles northwest of  Sydney , daily direct scheduled flights from Sydney are the easiest way to access the island (less than a 2-hour flight time). Private charter flights can also be arranged.

Dominica Batibou Beach

Thanks to easy air access, St. Lucia has long been known as the lush, adventurous capital of the Caribbean. But Dominica provides the same connection with nature, with a slightly more undiscovered slant . The “Nature Island” isn’t for people who want to walk for miles on white, sandy beaches—as a volcanic island, many of the beaches have a darker hue. The tradeoff of islands with powdery beaches for miles is that often there is a risk of being bored on the beach—not here!

Best things to do: Incorporate a series of hikes into your trip—there are many trails from easy to strenuous with incredible views, often with the gift of a waterfall. Dominica is also a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you’re not certified, you can take your classwork prior to your vacation and complete your certifications on the island. Champagne Reef is a favorite—it gets its name from the bubbling waters that come up from the underwater thermal springs.

How to get there: For years (COVID didn’t help) it was quite difficult to get to Dominica in one day from the U.S., but starting in early April, there will be a direct American Airlines flight from Miami daily, which opens up this island to a host of new adventurers.

2. Crete Greece

Crete, Greece

Crete has the best of everything: pink sand beaches, ancient history, natural beauty, and charming harbor towns. It is the largest and most southern island of Greece, so the weather and water are warmer before and after the summer season. Crete has maintained its own identity. It has a different cuisine, dialect, and traditions. It is one of my favorite places in the world.

Best things to do: The charming harbor town of Rethymnon is a medieval walled city full of interesting handicraft shops and traditional restaurants. AVLI is a boutique property consisting of several apartments that have been converted into a hotel. There is also a natural food store in the hotel that offers several types of olive oil and honey raki. The restaurant is a courtyard with 10 tables offering the freshest ingredients and cooking classes by the owner of AVLI, Katina.

You can drive to Crete’s other must-visit sites in under two hours. Visit the uninhabited island of Spinalonga, the pink sand beach of Elafonisi, the Cove of Balos, and the Samaria Gorge—one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe.

How to get there: Take a direct flight to Crete from Athens, or take the year-round ferry from Piraeus or the seasonal, summer ferry from Santorini.

49 Best Travel Tips to Save Time, Money, & Stress in 2024

Best Travel Tips

Traveling locally, across the country, or to another continent is an exciting way to form memories and experience other cultures. But an awry trip can usher in unnecessary stress, expenses, and potential regrets.

These travel tips can help you have a successful trip from the initial planning stages, as you pack your bags, and once you reach your destination.

Table of Contents

Best Travel Tips While Preparing for a Trip

This collection of tips covers just about everything you should consider when traveling and before you go. You are most likely practicing some of them, making them a good reminder, and others can help prevent uncommon travel surprises.

1. Book At Least Six Weeks in Advance

Instead of carving time out of your schedule to book your trip at a specific date or time (such as Tuesdays at 3 a.m. using a private browsing session to find discounted fares), a more effective strategy is researching travel options at least four to six weeks in advance.

You can still find cheap flights and ideal flight times at least six weeks before departure. Getting on the hunt two or three months before major holidays is also good.

Last-minute travel savings are possible but you may be unable to get a desired departure time, layover window, or destination. Waiting until the final days can be worth it if you have a flexible schedule and are open-minded about where you travel to.

2. Travel in the Off-Season or Shoulder Season

Avoiding the peak travel season is one of the easiest ways to pay less for flights and lodging. You also will enjoy smaller crowds and the weather can still be decent for your intended activities.

For example, visiting Spain is delightful in March and April but travel prices are elevated during Semana Santa (Holy Week) when most cities have processions that virtually shut down the city.

Another example is visiting a beach town during the shoulder season. The shoulder season is the time between the peak and the offseason. So you could take a trip to Cape May, NJ from the middle of May to the end of June instead of during the July/August peak. The weather is still good enough during the shoulder season to enjoy most peak-season activities.

3. Compare Multiple Booking Sites

Comparing prices from several travel booking sites can help you find the best rate within minutes. Airlines, hotels, and rental cars offer several slots to third-party booking sites and you can pay less than booking directly from the carrier.

It’s worth your time to check prices directly from the carrier website but also from one or more third-party booking sites (online travel agencies or OTAs) like Hotels.com , Kayak , or Google Flights .

The Vacationer Tip

Along with looking for the best flight schedule and prices, you can use our guide to help find the best seats on the plane and book them for cheap or for free.

4. Book Directly from the Travel Provider

While you can find discounted prices through online travel agencies and third-party booking sites, booking directly from the airline, hotel, or rental car agency provides more protection if you must cancel or reschedule. This is especially important for flights and the 24-hour cancellation rule .

With third-party reservations, you may be locked into a particular itinerary that could be non-refundable or non-changeable. You will need to call the booking site to determine what your alternatives are. If you’re eligible for a refund, it can take longer to receive your funds.

5. Stay at a Hostel to Save Money

Hostels are a common and safe way to secure affordable lodging in Europe and Asia. If you’re traveling solo or in a group and okay with not having as much privacy, a hostel helps keep your travel costs down.

Despite many misconceptions, most establishments are well-run with clean bathrooms and bedding. You may also be able to get a basic breakfast at some. With that said, be sure to research your options and consider paying a little more to get more luxurious accommodations.

6. Consider Vacation Rentals for Extended Stays

Vacation rental websites like Airbnb and VRBO have become immensely more popular since the pandemic as people yearned for privacy. While hotels are usually better for shorter stays as you avoid expensive cleaning fees and service fees, a vacation home or villa can be more cost-effective for extended stays.

At a minimum, a rental or an extended-stay hotel is more likely to offer a full kitchen suite that allows you to cook full meals instead of relying on packaged snacks or what fits inside the hotel mini-fridge.

Vacation rentals can also be cheaper per square foot if traveling as a family. Instead of squeezing into a hotel suite or booking multiple rooms, you have spacious accommodations. If you have small children, the extra space can keep you from losing your mind on rainy days.

The Vacationer’s Tip: While many people focus on spending less for flights, hotels and vacation rentals can have variable pricing. Here is how to find and book cheap hotels to enjoy clean and spacious lodging on a budget.

7. Buy Travel Insurance for Expensive or International Trips

Travel insurance is inexpensive on most itineraries and can save you thousands of dollars if your non-refundable travel is canceled or delayed for qualifying reasons.

Obtaining coverage is a good option for expensive trips. Picking up a policy can also be worth it when traveling outside the United States as you can have medical coverage and emergency evacuation benefits that your ordinary health insurance may not provide outside the country.

You should also consider booking your trips using credit cards with travel insurance coverage . These benefits are sufficient for low-cost excursions and can activate before your standalone travel insurance policy can. They can also provide complimentary rental car coverage .

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers the best credit card travel insurance benefits. Namely, you can be eligible for trip interruption and cancellation coverage of up to $10,000 per person ($20,000 per trip), primary auto rental collision damage waiver, up to $500 per ticket in trip delay reimbursement, and up to $100,000 in emergency evacuation  Learn How to Apply Here

8. Consider Annual Travel Insurance Plans

If you travel regularly, an annual travel insurance policy covers multiple trips at a lower premium than buying a new policy for each trip. This is an excellent option for frequent leisure travelers and business travelers.

9. Review Airline and Hotel Cancellation Policies

Your travel plans may change unexpectedly for personal or work reasons. Before you book, take the time to review the cancellation and modification policies just to make sure they are reasonable.

You want to make sure you have a strong possibility of getting a refund or a travel credit to redeem later. Being locked into a non-refundable itinerary may not be worth the savings unless you’re booking right before you go or your travel insurance may issue a refund.

In addition to researching the cancellation policy, be sure to review an airline’s seating and carry-on policy to avoid add-on fees and restrictions.

10. Choose Early Flights

Early morning flights are the best time to fly for several reasons. First, these departures are less likely to be delayed as it’s a new travel day with rested crews and minimal weather-related interruptions.

Additionally, these flights can be cheaper as you need to arrive at the airport a little earlier. Routes popular with business travel can be an exception to this rule, but you can anticipate paying less than for a mid-day sortie.

11. Arrive at the Airport Early

Best Travel Tips - Arrive at the Airport Early

Getting to the airport at least an hour before departure for domestic flights at small airports or when you’re not checking luggage. Plan on arriving at least two hours for domestic flights at busy airports, if you’re checking a bag, or traveling with small children.

What about international flights? Plan on arriving at least three hours before departure to allow additional time for a potentially longer check-in time.

Learn More: How Early Should I Get to the Airport?

12. Qualify for Expedited Airport Security

If you fly several times a year, obtaining expedited airport security credentials can help you avoid long airport security lines.

The first step is applying for a federally-administered Trusted Traveler Program, such as:

  • TSA PreCheck : Enjoy expedited security at domestic airports only.
  • Global Entry : Get expedited processing at customs lines on international flights plus TSA PreCheck benefits.
  • NEXUS : Ideal for travel between the U.S. and Canada. It also includes Global Entry and TSA PreCheck benefits.

Several rewards credit cards are offering free Global Entry and TSA PreCheck application fee credits to save a few dollars.

In addition to Trusted Traveler programs, you can also shave a few minutes off security wait times with CLEAR at select major airports and stadiums. Where available, this pre-security program can help you reach the expedited TSA security lines sooner.

Getting a Redress Number can help those who frequently have boarding pass issues, are subject to additional security screenings (including having SSSS on their boarding pass ), and those who experience delayed or denied boardings.

13. Relax at an Airport Lounge

If you have a long layover or arrive at the airport several hours later, visiting an airport lounge (like a Centurion Lounge ) can help you grab a complimentary meal and drink, and recharge your devices. You can also have a comfortable place to sit and the luxury lounges offer spa treatment, sleeping rooms, and shower suites to clean up.

Single-day passes are pricey but there are several credit cards with lounge access . Most lounges allow entry for the primary cardholder and up to two guests complimentary up to three hours before your next flight’s departure.

Airport lounge access is just one way to reduce air travel stress . Check out our article for additional suggestions.

14. Check Your Passport Expiration Date

Some countries and airlines won’t let you travel if your passport expires within six months. If you’re planning a trip, see if your passport is expiring soon to prevent delaying your trip.

Consider renewing your passport early if you’re approaching the six-month expiration window as the passport processing times can take up to 13 weeks to receive your new document. You can pay extra for expedited processing but the process can still take several weeks.

After submitting your renewal request, you can check your passport application status online .

Finally, use our How to Take Your Own Passport Photo guide to simplify things when applying or renewing.

15. Don’t Go Into Debt for Vacation

As much as you’re earning to get away on a dream trip, it’s probably not worth going into debt for. Whether your bank is offering a vacation loan or you intend on carrying a credit card balance (even with a 0% APR), borrowing money to travel can backfire.

Instead, look for the best options within your spending power. Consider setting aside money each month and delaying your trip if necessary.

In addition to saving up for travel in a dedicated savings account, you can use travel rewards credit cards to redeem points to defray purchases. Some cards offer annual statement credits that reimburse eligible travel bookings.

Additionally, airline credit cards and hotel credit cards also offer complimentary benefits to spend less.

Making a travel budget can help you plan for travel expenses so you’re not nervous about running out of cash while you travel or having regrets once you return home.

16. Exercise and Stretch

Once you depart for your trip, be sure to stretch and perform basic exercises as time and space permit. It can be as basic as stationary stretches while sitting in your seat to walking the airport terminal. If driving, stay outside for a few extra minutes at the gas station or rest area.

Stretching and being active once you arrive is also beneficial and can help you sleep better.

Best Travel Tips for Packing

17. only bring a carry-on.

When possible, only bring a carry-on to avoid lost or missing checked luggage. You can also avoid checked baggage fees and excessive weight charges if you overpack. Using the best carry-on can help you find the perfect soft or hard-sided luggage to fit your travel gear.

If you need to check a bag, it most likely won’t get lost but could get delayed. Here’s our helpful guide on what to do during baggage delays .

18. Pack as Light as Possible

Packing is stressful; Many people overpack to ease their anxiety, which sometimes means bringing extra suitcases or paying to check a bag. Write down everything you think you need on your packing list. After it’s complete, cut it down to the bare minimum.

Pack underwear and socks for the number of showers you expect to take; Add an emergency pair for every five or so days of your trip. Shirts and pants can usually be worn multiple days in a row. If your accommodation has a washing machine, you can pack even less.

19. Carry-On Overnight Travel Essentials

You never know when a flight delay will turn into spending the night in the terminal or at a nearby hotel. While the airline may provide meal vouchers, you should pack these travel essentials to freshen up:

  • A change of clothes, especially extra underwear and socks
  • Powerbank (they cost about $20 and have several phone/tablet recharges)
  • Travel charger

Even if you’re not stuck somewhere overnight, these small and compact items can also help you rest while on the road:

  • Earplugs (great for plane rides and noisy hotels)
  • Noise-canceling earbuds or headphones
  • Travel blanket
  • Travel pillow (see the best travel neck pillows )

Adding these carry-on essentials to your packing list can prepare you for nearly any change of plans and to weather a long layover or flight.

20. Don’t Forget a Power Adapter

A power adapter is essential in most foreign destinations to charge your devices. Traveling to Canada or Mexico is an exception as the standard voltage is 120v and these countries have the same outlet design as the United States. Check to see the adapter requirements for the country you are visiting before leaving.

The Vacationer’s Phil Dengler recently visited South Africa and needed a Type M adapter. He purchased this Ceptics International Power Plug Adapter Travel Set , which includes 13 adapters for just about every foreign country.

21. Use Packing Cubes

There are a couple of ways to organize your travel luggage to squeeze everything in. Your bag may include built-in storage compartments or you might roll up clothing and put them in packing cubes or vacuum storage bags. If you’re on a budget, rubber bands or plastic bags can also do the job. I recommend the following packing cubes: Veken 6 Set of Various Colored Packing Cubes .

Packing for a vacation can feel like a fine art at times, even as a seasoned traveler. Our travel packing list can cover everything you need to bring so you don’t forget and have to buy something along the way.

22. Bring an Empty Water Bottle

For over 20 years, it’s become ingrained for air travelers to pack liquids in containers containing no more than three ounces. This security rule means you can’t bring a filled water bottle through airport security, but you can bring an empty one.

Most airports have filtered water dispensers in the post-security terminal that you can fill up your bottle with and avoid paying big bucks for bottled water. You also won’t struggle to stay hydrated during your journey.

If you’re driving, consider bringing a travel water filter or a portable filter that you can use in your hotel room to pay pennies for filtered water.

23. Dress Comfortably for the Flight

You should dress comfortably for the plane ride. Dressing in layers with a light jacket or a travel blanket can help you stay warm if the cabin is cool. Bringing travel slippers or slip-on shoes on long-haul flights is another overlooked comfort hack. Wear sweatpants instead of jeans.

24. Bring Duplicate Travel Documents

Take a few minutes to photocopy your critical travel documents such as your government-issued IDs and passport. Be sure to keep these papers separate from your originals in case one set gets lost.

Once you arrive at your destination, you may decide to go out in public with your duplicates and keep your originals plus at least one payment card in the room safe. That way, a pickpocket doesn’t run off with the more valuable set and you still have a way to make purchases.

Taking it a step further, write down your credit card numbers and the emergency contact number if you need to call and cancel if your plastic goes missing. If you don’t have a phone number, you can also look for a pay phone that should have a toll-free number to contact Visa or Mastercard to cancel your card.

25. Keep Valuables at Home and Bring a Lock

Unless it’s necessary to bring them along for a business function or a personal event, leave your valuables at home. The hassle of keeping them secure and the risk of losing them may not be worth the replacement cost.

This includes your fine jewelry, watches, and high-end electronics that are nice to use but optional for this trip. Additionally, these items can make you a target for thieves.

The Vacationer’s Phil Dengler also recommends bringing a luggage lock or a standard combination lock.

Best Travel Tips Luggage Lock & Tracker

26. Install a Luggage Tracking Device

Bluetooth tracking devices like the Apple AirTag are a small and easy way to see where your carry-on and checked luggage are at all times. A single piece is about the size of a coin and costs $30 or less.

27. Bring Comfy Walking Shoes

Most of the world walks more steps than we do daily. Therefore, it’s essential to pack at least one pair of comfortable shoes or sandals to stroll the streets of your destination. Comfortable footwear is also a must-have if you’re staying stateside.

28. Keep a Travel Journal

Consider packing a notebook or diary into your carry-on. Handwriting your favorite travel memories in a journal is an easy way to remember the intricacies that you may struggle to remember years later when you reflect.

For example, you can write down what you did each day along with exciting facts. Having everybody share their favorite activity for the day is another way to use this journal.

Best Travel Tips for Once You Arrive

29. learn the local customs.

Words and expressions can have different meanings where you’re traveling to. It’s also a good idea to know some of the common phrases and customs the locals practice so you can have a basic conversation.

You can research these details online or in a guidebook.

Best Travel Tips Local Customs

30. Dress As a Local

Blending in with the crowd can help prevent unwanted attention from panhandlers and pickpockets. For example, don’t wear revealing clothing when the culture favors pants or long dresses. Researching fashion advice for your destination is your best option.

31. Be Wary of Local Scams

Brushing up on the latest tourist scams can help you avoid bad situations. A recent travel guidebook is a reliable way to find the most common tactics for your destination. Two to look out for are unofficial taxis and fake wifi hotspots.

32. Consider Wearing a Money Belt

Long-time travelers have a love-hate relationship with money belts as they point you out as a tourist if you’re constantly reaching for it in public. Additionally, wearing the belt all day can be a nuisance as it’s an extra layer of fabric you’re not used to.

At the same time, it’s harder to steal a money belt than to grab something from your pockets or purse. They are also inexpensive to buy on Amazon and don’t take up a lot of suitcase space if you decide not to use it.

33. Download Travel Apps

Smartphones make international travel substantially easier as you can download various apps before leaving home so you can hit the ground running.

Some types of apps you may consider downloading for these purposes:

  • Offline Maps: Many consider Maps.me to be the best offline maps app and more user-friendly than Apple Maps or Google Maps. You may still try getting paper maps from a local tourism office or bookstore once you arrive though.
  • Translation: A translator app for traveling can be pre-loaded with basic phrases with offline access. It may also be able to interpret voice recordings and photographs.
  • Jet Lag: Flying to the other side of the world takes a toll on your body and sleep cycle. Timeshifter can help you conquer jet lag quicker while traveling and upon returning home.

Downloading apps for your airline, hotel, and travel booking sites will help you access your digital reservation information and receive itinerary updates. Some travelers also enjoy downloading tourism apps like Tripadvisor or Yelp to quickly access ratings for attractions.

34. Get an International Sim Card or Phone Plan

Your stateside phone carrier may offer an international plan that you can upgrade to while you’re out of the country. Contract carriers and prepaid providers offer this overseas coverage.

Alternatively, an international sim card can be a budget-friendly and reliable option if you visit multiple countries. Just make sure your device is unlocked and GSM-compatible.

35. Avoid Eating in Touristy Areas

You’re likely to pay more and potentially get lower-quality food when eating in touristy areas. This isn’t always the case. For example, dining within sight of Rome’s Pantheon is an exception as there are well-rated restaurants for a memorable ambiance.

However, going a few streets over or to an adjacent community can be the ticket to finding authentic food. Asking your hotel or trustworthy locals can help you find a good spot in addition to researching places to eat online.

36. Lunch Can Be Cheaper than Supper

If you’re only planning on eating out one meal per day, your mid-day meal can be more affordable than in the evening.

Depending on the restaurant, there can be separate menus for the bar and dining room. Staying in the bar can be more affordable and your meal options can be similar.

37. Use American Chains for Public Restrooms and Wifi

Finding a public bathroom can be challenging in foreign destinations. American restaurants like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Taco Bell are more likely to offer public access to restrooms and wifi, although you may need to make a small purchase.

38. Look for Free Walking Tours

Free walking tours are common in popular tourist destinations both stateside and internationally. These tours can last a couple of hours and hit the cultural and historical points of interest. They can provide an idea of what you want to spend more time exploring later.

While these tours don’t have an entry fee, nothing in life is genuinely 100% free ,and leaving a tip is expected in most situations. You may decide to tip more if the guide is knowledgeable and engaging.

39. A Paid Tour Can Be Better Than a Free Tour

Best Travel Tips for Tours

You should also compare the free tours to private, guided tours. A paid tour can provide more hands-on support and access to more landmarks.

In addition to researching the traditional tour providers, the experiences section in Airbnb can also provide curated opportunities to see the sights, enjoy culinary delights, or do physical activities like paddleboarding or folk dancing.

40. Look for Discounted Sightseeing Passes

Museums and entertainment attractions offer discounted and priority admission with sightseeing pass companies. So, instead of buying tickets directly from the tourist attractions you wish to visit, purchasing a city attraction card in advance can save money and means you won’t need to wait for hours (potentially) to buy a ticket at the door.

For domestic trips, CityPASS® offers discounted packages in approximately 15 major U.S. cities. Entertainment.com can also help you save on experiences in the United States and Canada.

If you’re flying to the “Eternal City” of Rome, Italy, the Roma Tourist Card is worth the upfront cost as you can enjoy these benefits:

  • Skip-the-line access at the Roman Colosseum
  • Guided tour of St. Peter’s Basilica
  • Access to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel
  • Audio guides for the Pantheon and Rome
  • Free return transfer to or from Rome’s international airports (Ciampino and Fiumicino)
  • 10% discount on other attractions, museums, and tours

Depending on the program, you may need to book your pass weeks in advance.

41. Get an Interrail Pass for a Eurotrip

If you’re backpacking Europe or touring several countries, an Interrail Pass from Eurail can make it easier to finalize your transportation plan using an interactive map. This platform lets you visit up to 33 countries by rail with a single pass.

42. Have a Flexible Travel Schedule

Mapping out an initial plan for each day can help you seize the day and optimize your time of playing tourist. Meanwhile, remaining flexible is pivotal as several variables can alter your itinerary such as:

  • A change in the weather
  • Accomplishing more than you originally scheduled
  • Making friends with other travelers and having dinner with them
  • Realizing a planned activity isn’t as appealing once you arrive

Another related suggestion is to get out and explore the city and the immediate area on your arrival date (time permitting) so you have a better idea of what to do the next day.

43. Wear Sunscreen Early and Often For Beach & Outdoor Trips

There is nothing worse than getting a bad sunburn at the beginning of a trip. Find a good facial sunscreen and buy a travel-sized container. Apply it to your face and neck a few times per day. For beach trips, either cover up with a hat and clothing or apply strong sunscreen to your body multiple times per day. While it may be annoying, it is much better than dealing with painful and peeling sunburn.

Sunscreen is usually marked up at typical tourist spots. If you check a bag, consider buying what you need before leaving and packing it.

44. Use an ATM Instead of a Currency Exchange Booth

Instead of heading directly to the currency exchange booth at the airport or train terminal, look for an ATM instead. Several should be in the public terminals or you can look for a local bank branch to find a secure location.

Why? ATMs provide better currency exchange ratios than the money exchange booth. Even if you pay foreign transaction fees and non-network ATM fees, you will most likely come out ahead financially speaking.

45. Use a Credit Card With No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many travel-focused credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred , the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , and The Platinum Card from American Express do not have foreign transaction fees. Use cards like those when traveling internationally to avoid potentially expensive fees.

46. Bring at Least One Backup Credit Card

Getting stuck on vacation with no access to money (besides cash) is not something you want to experience; Your main credit card could get lost or stolen. Carry at least one backup credit card (ideally with no foreign transaction fees if overseas) on all trips.

Phil Dengler’s Favorite Travel Tips

Here are a few of Phil’s favorite travel tips.

47. Be Very Flexible – Pick Your Travel Dates Based on the Cheapest Days to Fly

Flights are usually the most costly part of a vacation. I recommend using Google Flights calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly to and from your destination. After identifying those days, book your airfare. You must be flexible, but it can save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars planning a vacation this way.

48. Book the Aisle and Window Seats When Traveling in Pairs

I always book the aisle and window seats when flying with my girlfriend or a friend. No one wants to sit in the middle seat, so people rarely select it. Doing this usually gives us the entire row to ourselves.

It does not work on full flights, however. The good news is people are usually willing to trade their middle seat. Simply offer them your aisle or window seat and you still get to sit next to your significant other or friend.

49. Follow Proper Airline Etiquette

Knowing how to properly act on a plane can better your flying experience. See our following guides for more information.

The Vacationer’s Final Thoughts

Taking the time to plan for a vacation, whether it’s the annual beach trip or you’re trying some new place, lets you practice these travel tips and not stress before or during your expedition.

The best part is that you don’t need to be a travel pro to successfully implement these suggestions. If you’re a beginner, try adopting several more each time you leave home.

Going on a holiday needn’t be a fraught experience …

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday

Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community

A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.

1. Book like an agent

“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.

2. Be an early bird

“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”

3. If you do book late, be flexible

Be open-minded …

Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.

4. Avoid peak season

The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”

5. Midweek can be more affordable

“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”

6. Take out travel insurance when you book

A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.

7. On solo trips, consider a group tour

‘Some companies offer specialist female-only tours.’

If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”

8. Have a daily budget

“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”

9. Consider all-inclusive options

“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”

10. Work your way around the world

“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”

11. Travel as sustainably as possible

‘By travelling sustainably, you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you.’

“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”

12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company

When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.

13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’

When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.

14. Embrace the great outdoors

‘The carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays.’

If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”

15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp

“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”

16. If the weather is terrible …

… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”

17. For best value destinations, try …

Belgrade has an underground culture scene similar to Berlin 20 years ago.

“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.

18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …

“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”

19. If in doubt, follow local people

“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”

20. And remember: you get what you pay for

“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.

Dr. Heaney is a physician in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I hate mosquitoes so much that I take my own bug repellent to parties. But in early March, on a trip with my partner to the idyllic island of Curaçao off Venezuela, I was caught off guard by insect bites after our bed-and-breakfast hosts said that mosquitoes didn’t usually appear until late summer.

Near the end of the vacation, my legs began to ache. After I couldn’t keep up with my partner on a snorkeling adventure, he pulled me from the water. My ribs felt broken, as if I’d been smashed against large boulders in the sea. Later that day came intense fever, alternating with shaking chills.

Back in Michigan — weak, nauseated and dehydrated from explosive diarrhea — I ended up in the emergency department. Tests showed worrisome white blood cell levels and abnormal liver numbers. The physician assistant who saw me was perplexed; she gave me IV fluids and medication for nausea and sent me home.

A few days later I developed itching so severe that I couldn’t sleep. A bright red rash spread over both thighs and up my lower back. My brain was foggy, and my balance was so impaired that I would have failed a sobriety test. My primary care doctor had no answers. But as my head began to clear, it occurred to me to request a dengue fever test.

Two days later, the test was positive.

Despite my training in medicine, I was blindsided. Dengue, a mosquito-borne illness, is surging through Latin America and the Caribbean, including in Puerto Rico, where a public health emergency was declared last week. This year is likely to be the worst on record, in part because of El Niño-driven temperature spikes and extreme weather linked to climate change. As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns grow more erratic, the problem will get only worse.

But neither the traveling public nor our frontline health workers are prepared. Without urgent reforms to how we educate travelers, doctors, nurses and others — as well as reforms to public health surveillance and early warning systems — we will be doomed to miss textbook cases like mine. That means those infected with dengue will miss out on timely treatment, possibly even spreading the virus to areas where it was never found before.

The dengue virus, which is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, infects up to 400 million people every year in nearly every region of the world, but it is most prevalent in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and East Africa. Most cases are asymptomatic or, like mine, are considered mild, although the aptly nicknamed breakbone fever often doesn’t feel that way. Some 5 percent of cases progress to a severe, life-threatening disease including hemorrhagic fever.

One malicious feature of dengue is that when someone is infected a second time with a different type of the virus, the risk of severe illness is higher. A vaccine exists, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends it only for children ages 9 to 16 who had dengue before and live in places where the virus is common. That’s because, paradoxically, if you’ve never had dengue, the vaccine puts you at greater risk of severe illness your first time.

Dengue outbreaks, which, in the Americas, tend to occur every three to five years , now appear to be expanding their geographic reach as temperatures climb . The Aedes aegypti mosquito has typically had difficulty surviving and reproducing during the winter in temperate climates. But in parts of Brazil, which is experiencing a dengue emergency , the thermometer no longer dips as low in the winter as it once did, allowing the bugs to reproduce year-round. Overall, Latin America and the Caribbean have had three times the number of cases this year as reported for the same period in 2023, which was a record year. Higher temperatures are also helping the virus develop faster inside the mosquito, leading to a higher viral load and a higher probability of transmission. And mosquitoes are benefiting from standing water from rains and floods that are growing more extreme in a warming world.

As the virus spreads globally, travelers are bringing infections back to the continental United States. Based on 2024 numbers to date, this year should show a clear increase of cases here at home compared with 2023, given that the typical dengue season hasn’t even started yet. There could also be local outbreaks in places like Florida, Texas and California, which experienced small ones in the past. As Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, the chief of the C.D.C.’s dengue branch, told me by email, “Increased travel to places with dengue risk could lead to more local transmission, but the risk of widespread transmission in the continental United States is low.”

But since testing is done only on a small fraction of cases, many are going uncounted. I was the one who requested that I be tested. Had I not been given a diagnosis, I would not be aware of my increased risk of severe illness if I am reinfected. Getting a diagnosis is crucial to inform those infected in areas where the Aedes mosquito lives so that the virus doesn’t spread further.

The growing risk means travelers to regions with dengue must be savvier: They can check local news and U.S. State Department advisories, bring an effective insect repellent and protective clothing and book lodging with air-conditioning or screens on the windows and doors. Though Aedes aegypti mosquitoes now live year-round in many locations and are pushing northward into new regions , thanks to climate change and other factors, there are still seasons when the risk is greater, and travelers might consider avoiding trips during those periods. Travel insurance with medical coverage may also be a useful precaution.

For medical professionals, this should be a warning. We need to start thinking about dengue as a possible diagnosis, not just a piece of textbook trivia. We should ask about recent travel when treating patients presenting with symptoms, especially symptoms not easily explained by other diagnoses.

Medical schools are gradually integrating climate change effects into curriculums . This is essential, since malaria, Lyme, West Nile and other insect-borne diseases are on the rise, as are other conditions like heat illness, asthma and allergies that are worsened by climate change. This work must accelerate, and training must include those of us who are already practicing. State medical boards should consider mandating continuing education on tropical emerging illnesses, as they do on many other pertinent topics.

After receiving my positive test result, I called the emergency department to leave a message for my previous provider about my diagnosis, assuming she had never before seen dengue. If we continue on this trajectory, I’m certain this won’t be her last case.

I’ve Tried Dozens of SPF Products, but These Are the 10 Best Sunscreens I’ve Ever Used — From $10

From reef-friendly formulas to the best tinted SPF.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

If there’s one product that you should never leave for a trip — let alone the house — without , it’s a high-quality sunscreen . Sun protection factor, or SPF, represents a sunscreen’s ability to protect against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, preventing sunburns and potential skin damage. By using sunscreen regularly, you can decrease your likelihood of developing skin cancer and premature aging signs like wrinkles and dark spots.

And if there’s one thing to know about me, it's that I’ll never be caught outside without being covered head to toe in sunscreen, even on an overcast day. This SPF love affair started back in my beauty retail days , and I have tested dozens of sunscreen products — each with different formulas, textures, and target areas — to find the very best ones that not only provide ample protection, but look and feel good, too. I'm not one to gatekeep, so I've rounded up my picks so everyone can get one step closer to finding their SPF soulmate. Below, I've included everything from a whipped cream-like body SPF to my go-to hand sunscreen from Supergoop . Prices start at just $10, so if you have a trip coming up, you'll definitely want to stock up.

Vacation Classic Whip SPF 30

The brand Vacation calls this body SPF a “dessert for your skin,” and as someone who has been proudly wearing it since 2022, I can absolutely attest to that. If the mere thought of applying sunscreen doesn't spark joy for you, then it's time to trade in your ordinary squeeze bottle of traditional lotion for this dreamy version that dispenses the product like a whipped cream bottle. Aside from its fun packaging, the sunscreen is reef-friendly and water-resistant (for up to 80 minutes), and it feels just as good as it looks. The mousse-like texture also feels far more moisturizing than other body sunscreen products that I’ve tried, and with how much the sun dehydrates my skin, it’s something that I absolutely love about this product.

Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50

As someone who wears makeup on most days, it can be hard to reapply sunscreen once you’ve already concealed, contoured, and powdered. Most formulas are only intended to be applied under your makeup and protect you for just a few hours, so I keep this convenient sunscreen spray on me at all times to refresh my SPF coverage throughout the day (you can spray it over your makeup without disturbing your glam). It's also formulated with skin-friendly ingredients like aloe, vitamin E, caffeine, and more to give my face a jolt of hydration, energy, and brightness — things it can always use after a long travel day or sun tanning session. Even better, it's on sale for $17 at Ulta right now.

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

When considering which sunscreen is best for you, it’s important to evaluate when and where you are planning to use it. While some of my go-to SPF products are better suited for everyday protection, if I am preparing for an extended day outdoors or engaging in physical activities, I consistently apply Blue Lizard's fragrance-free sunscreen. This particular sunscreen is both sweat- and water-resistant, making it the perfect choice for active days. While it does give a slight white cast (nothing too stark), I don’t mind it because I know how much protection its mineral SPF 50 formula is giving me.

Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen

While I have a plethora of sunscreens in my lineup, when it comes to travel, I love streamlining my products as much as I can. The space in my toiletry bag is disappointingly finite, so that’s why I absolutely love this tinted SPF that acts as a sunscreen and glowy foundation. It actually works so well as a foundation that I’ve routinely worn it on nights out and have been delightfully pleased with its long-lasting, flashback-free formula. And I’m not the only one that loves skin-enhancing sunscreen, one Travel + Leisure writer raved that “this product saves time and does double duty by evening out my skin tone while also protecting from the sun, no matter the season.” Its light-to-medium coverage is perfect for anything on your itinerary and it's easy to apply on the go, so give it a try ahead of your next vacation.

Tatcha The Kissu Lip Tint SPF 25

Protecting your lips from the sun is just as important as protecting the rest of your skin. UV rays can cause damage to the delicate skin on your lips, leading to issues like sunburn, wrinkles, and dryness. I’ve tried plenty of SPF lip products over the years, but few have compared to this newly released lip tint from Tatcha. With SPF 25 coverage, a luxurious-feeling formula, and a subtle tint of color, this product not only keeps my lips safe but also leaves them looking fabulous. I love that it gives me peace of mind that my pout is protected, hydrated, and dolled up.

Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50

In my experience, few mineral sunscreens that claim to feel weightless deliver, but this lightweight formula actually feels like a veil of silk on my skin. We all know how damaging and drying the sun can be for our skin, but fortunately, in addition to its SPF 50 protection, this product is filled with good-for-you ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide for extra hydration. It’s consistently sold out — which speaks to its effectiveness — but I found a bunch of them in stock at Sephora. Whether you wear it alone for a radiant, makeup-free look or as a base under makeup for all-day protection, this product is a game-changer.

Coola Scalp & Hair Sunscreen SPF 30

Many people tend to overlook the importance of protecting their scalp, but being as it's one of the first places that the sun touches, it should be a crucial part of your overall protection routine. In an effort to be more diligent about my scalp SPF coverage, I started using this product last summer, and I’m amazed by how much more hydrated my hair feels by not being dehydrated and burned from the sun. This spray blends in incredibly seamlessly, providing protection within moments and, even better, without making your hair feel greasy or weighed down.

Sun Bum Original Sunscreen Spray SPF 70

Made without harmful chemicals like oxybenzone or octinoxate that harm our reefs, this is one of my go-to spray-on sunscreen products for beach days. It goes on easily, smells nice, and is affordable enough that I feel comfortable sharing it with large groups of people during a day out in the sun. In addition to my high praise, it's also garnered over 21,000 perfect ratings from shoppers, who gushed that its easy-to-apply formula never feels greasy .

Supergoop! Mini Handscreen SPF 40

I love nearly all of Supergoop’s effective and skin-friendly formulas , but a product that I feel is often overlooked is its hand cream. While you can (and should) be lathering your hands in your body SPF, the skin around our hands is much more delicate than the rest of our body (it's one of the first places to show wrinkles as we age). Therefore, it benefits from sunscreen with a bit more TLC. That’s where Handscreen, which is designed specifically for your hands, comes in. Formulated with SPF 40 and anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating oils, it's not only protecting your skin, but also enhancing it over time.

EltaMD UV AOX Eye Broad Spectrum SPF 30

The skin under our eyes, much like our hands and lips, is extremely delicate and requires special care — particularly in terms of sun protection. With a powerful SPF 30 and sun damage-reversing antioxidants that combat dark circles and wrinkles, this compact under-eye product is an essential addition to my travel toiletry bag. In fact, I use it in lieu of concealer on busy travel days thanks to its subtle coverage and skin-brightening ingredients. Although it may be a bit more expensive than your drugstore coverup, it's an invaluable product that goes a long way, and I firmly believe that it has had the most significant impact in terms of safeguarding my under-eyes from the sun and brightening them over time. Plus, it helps you save precious toiletry bag space.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.
