1. The professional tour guide

The professional tour guide is the most common type of tour guide, and it's the primary type most people think of when thinking about a tour guide. It's usually a full-time job, but it can also be part-time or a side gig. They typically work with international tourists and are licensed international tourist guides.

2. The private tour guide

A private tour guide accompanies paying clients on tours for a fee but doesn't work full-time in the industry. What kind of skills should a tour guide have?

Ever since gaining independence in 1965, the fishing village named Singapore had transformed into a bustling metropolis and became one of four Asian economic tigers. Throughout the rapid economic development, tourism had been a major contributor to the economy by virtue of providing employment and boosting growths of many related-industries. Nevertheless, in recent years, Singapore tourism had seen an alarming propensity in tourist spending. Tourist receipts had not only ceased to increase but even showed a significant decline in the latest annual report. Hence, this inclination in tourist spending led us to our research question “How is Singapore going to revive its tourism sector in the competitive era?”. The purpose of our study was to find out how Singapore could cope with the newly emerged trend in tourism. The first step of our research was following secondary research in which we extracted information from credible sources to have a better understanding of the industry. In the next step, we conducted qualitative primary research by interviewing industry professionals so that we had the chance to unravel the underlying reasons for the unpredictability and the new-found impediment of the industry. Based on the insight we gathered from industry experts, four themes were constructed into a framework regarding Singapore tourism to help us explore industry mechanism and recommendations were made correspondingly with the aim of assisting Singapore tourism. Our research would not only serve as a reference material for Singapore government to consider proper initiatives to boost the industry but also provide up-to-date information for private sector to help businesses thrive.

The objective of this chapter is to map and analyze the available tourism assets and products in the Kingdom of Lesotho. The analysis includes assessments on how to improve performance and sustainability of the tourism industry in Lesotho including greater utilization of existing tourism infrastructure and further development of Lesotho’s tourism products. This chapter also addresses the strategic issues of tourism development and how Lesotho could increase the number of its tourists. Tourism development has been identified by the government of Lesotho, the International Monetary Fund as well as the United Nations World Tourism Organization as a sector that can reduce poverty as well as absorb low or semi skilled labor. Boosting the tourism sector in Lesotho would work towards alleviating poverty in the Kingdom overall. This chapter applies a case approach in order to illustrate potential investment opportunities and tourism performance improvements in an existing ski resort in Lesotho.

Drawing on the classical crowd theories of Tarde, Le Bon, Durkheim and Canetti, this paper examines pub crawl crowds at the Bulgarian nightlife resort, Sunny Beach. The paper argues that there are elements in classical crowd theory which can be used to advance the current research on tourist crowds such as those at pub crawls. The main strength of the theories lies in their ability to bring us close to crowd dynamics in their lived immediacy: The flow of emotions, collective attunement, the role of guides, and patterns of destruction—these are some of the issues that the theories can help us understand. A major weakness of the theories is that they exaggerate the irrationality of crowds while neglecting the background conditions of crowd activities. The paper is based on fieldwork among Danish tourists and guides in Sunny Beach. The key data come from 45 in-depth interviews and observations of 14 pub crawls.
