Mark Cavendish rolls home, at the same time Adam Yates is awarded the yellow jersey. The race heads for France tomorrow, and Cav's target will be to be first over the line, rather than one of the last.

Pogacar takes more time out of Vingegaard

A big day in the General Classification too, with Tadej Pogacar taking more time out of Jonas Vingegaard thanks to his bonuses - he is now 11 seconds ahead of the defending champion.

Lafay's first Tour win

That was Victor Lafay's first stage win at the Tour. It's also the first one his team, Cofidis, have managed since 2008.

The road lurches uphill again and Pello Bilbao is quickly reeled in. Wout van Aert is back in pole position, especially with so many team-mates around him.

Pello Bilbao is a Basque rider so you can tell how much a stage win today would mean to him - his lead is growing, but there are a mass of Jumbo-Visma riders behind him and we are not going downhill anymore, we are back on the flat.

Pello Bilbao is the fastest descender at the moment, though. He has opened up a bit of gap on the rest of the leaders.

Britain's Tom Pidcock is in the lead group too, flying down this hill.

10.8km to go

Wout van Aert was dropped on the way up that last climb but he is back in this lead bunch, and he will be licking his lips about the final 10km.

Tour de France: Victor Lafay wins stage two but Adam Yates keeps overall lead

Adam Yates held on to his overall lead in the Tour de France after he safely negotiated a tense second stage, the longest of the 2023 Tour, from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastián, won by the French rider Victor Lafay.

Lafay, already the surprise package of the opening stages, took his Cofidis team’s first Tour success for 15 years after breaking clear of the race favourites in the final kilometre of the stage.

The 27‑year‑old from Lyon, now fourth overall and already one of the best performers in the first stage to Bilbao on Saturday, frustrated the best-laid plans of Jumbo-Visma’s bitterly disappointed Wout van Aert.

“I just went out there and did everything I could,” Lafay said. “Yesterday I was a bit frustrated, but today, to be there at the end, that’s amazing. I knew there would be attacks towards the end and I thought I could do something. I just said to myself: ‘Go for it.’”

But the stage was disrupted by fans scattering tacks across the race route with up to 20 to 25 riders believed to have punctured. The French rider Lilian Calmejane was one of those to post images of tacks embedded in punctured tyres after he had crossed the finish line.

“Someone sprayed some tacks on the road because we saw 15-20 punctures,” Matt White, the Jayco AlUla team’s head of performance, said. “Some punctured immediately and some rode through with a slow leak. It’s a shame. We’re lucky that Simon Yates didn’t puncture, but there were a lot of guys puncturing at an important time in the race.”

As in the opening stage to Bilbao on Saturday, a select group including the UAE Emirates leader, Tadej Pogacar, and the overnight race leader, Yates, locked horns with defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard, towards the top of the final climb, the Jaizkibel.

Mindful of how close his rivalry with the Jumbo-Visma leader, Vingegaard, might be, Pogacar targeted the eight‑second bonus available and after winning the sprint to the top against the 2022 champion and extending his margin over him to 11sec, he then accelerated into the mist‑shrouded descent with the Dane in his slipstream. But Vingegaard, aware his teammate Van Aert was in hot pursuit in the group behind, refused to assist the Slovenian and they were reeled in by their pursuers with 12km to race.

Although several riders, including Adam Yates’s UAE Emirates teammate Matteo Trentin, crashed in conditions that ranged from sunshine to showers, the Lancastrian was relieved to retain the race lead.

“There was a lot of stress in the bunch, wet roads and a lot of road furniture,” he said. “We had a little bit of bad luck with Matteo crashing. In the end we set up Tadej for the bonus seconds and in the final, I think we did a good job. Tomorrow’s a little easier on paper, but you never know with the Tour. Every day is super‑hard, super-technical, it’s not just easy to go to the finish and keep yellow. We’ll see what happens.”

The main break of the day was animated by the American Neilson Powless of the EF Education EasyPost team, a past winner of the San Sebastián Classic, and the Norwegian veteran Edvald Boasson Hagen, of the TotalEnergies team.

But as the pair entered the final 40km Boasson Hagen faded and Powless pursued the move alone. Eventually, though, the rapidly gaining peloton led by Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team chewed him up and spat him out, well before the top of the Jaizkibel.

It was a better day for the Ineos Grenadiers team, with Tom Pidcock taking fourth in the sprint and Egan Bernal in the front group at the finish, although the British team do not yet have any riders placed in the top 10.

It was another tough day, however, for Mark Cavendish who was again distanced by the succession of short sharp climbs. The 38‑year‑old, now with the Astana Qazaqstan team, is hoping for better in the expected sprint finish in Bayonne on Monday.

“Hopefully it is [a sprint],” Cavendish said. “They ride hard on the climbs to control it [the race]. They just look at the numbers. All the sprinters are on the back saying: ‘Calm down!’ Hopefully we can have a nice bunch sprint.”

Tour de France Stage 2 Preview: Another Day of Brutal Climbs

Here's exactly when to tune in to see the most exciting part of another long, intense stage.

Stage 2 - Saturday, July 2 - Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sébastián - 208.9K

The longest stage of the 2023 Tour de France–and another filled with Basque climbs–Stage 2 should be another intense (and exhausting) day of racing–and could end with a new rider wearing the yellow jersey as the Tour’s overall leader.

The day begins in Vitoria-Gasteiz the capital of the Basque Country and the birthplace of the 2002 Tour-runner-up Joseba Beloki, who’s known for crashing violently on the descent into Gap at the end of Stage 9 in the 2003.

But it’s final 40km of that stage that matters, with the Category 4 Côte de Gurutze serving as the appetizer to the day’s biggest and final challenge: the Category 2 Jaizkibel (8.1 km at 5.3%), where another 8, 5, and 2 bonus seconds await the first three riders over the summit, which comes just 16.5km from the finish line in San Sébastián. As it does during the Clásica San Sébastián, a one-day race held here a week or two after each year’s Tour de France, the Jaizkibel should launch the stage-winning selection and possibly the stage winner itself.

Great Britain’s Adam Yates enters the day in the yellow jersey , and as a former winner of the Clásica San Sébastián, he should have no trouble defending the jersey and competing for another stage win–on paper, at least.

But he’s clearly here to support Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar’s bid to win the Tour overall, and will take his own chances only if they don’t conflict with Pog’s. So if Yates ends the day in yellow, it’s only because doing so did not get in the way of the team’s overall strategy for winning the Tour.

Unfortunately, the roads should be wet, with showers overnight and light rain into the morning, with scattered showers expected throughout the afternoon. The descent of the Jaizkibel can be treacherous, which means fewer risks will be taken by the Tour’s GC contenders for fear of a crash ending their Tour prematurely.

Riders to watch

Stage 2 takes its finale right from the roadbook of the Clásica San Sébastián, a one-day race held here a week or two after each year’s Tour de France. France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and the United States’ Neilsen Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) won the Clásica in 2018 and 2021, respectively, and have to be counted among the favorites on Sunday.

Other contenders include many of the riders we saw at the front at the end of Stage 1, including Great Britain’s Simon Yates (Team Jayco AlUla), Denmark’s Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), and Spain’s Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious). We’ll also keep an eye on Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers), who was absent in the finale of Stage 1, but perhaps because he was saving himself for Stage 2. One of the sport’s best descenders, Pidcock could light up the race coming down the Jaizkibel.

When to Watch

This is a long stage and it’s a Sunday, so we suggest waiting until the final hour to see the run-in to the Jaizkibel and the stage finale. Tuning-in around 10:15 a.m. EDT should get the job done, with the stage expected to end about an hour later.

2023 Tour de France route

From the Basque Country to Paris and all the stages in between

The 2023 Tour de France got underway on July 1st in Bilbao, Spain with another demanding route that includes only a single 22km hilly time trial in the Alps and mountain stages in all five of France’s mountain ranges. From the Grand Départ in the Basque Country to the finish in Paris, Cyclingnews has all the route details.

The very limited amount of time trialling and preponderance of mountains no doubt suits French riders  Thibaut Pinot , David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. As a result, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglič and Geraint Thomas targeted the Giro d’Italia, which had three times the amount of time trialling and fewer mountains.

Official information from race organiser ASO claimed the 3,404km route includes eight flat stages for the sprinters, four hilly stages suited to breakaways and eight mountain stages. Four of these include summit finishes: in the Pyrenees at Cauterets-Cambasque, on the legendary Puy de Dôme volcano in the Massif Central, on the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

The other mountain stages are also extremely difficult, even if some are short and extra intense.

Stage 14 to Morzine includes 4,200m of climbing, alongside the mighty Col de Joux Plane and its testing descent to the finish. Stage 15 ends with the 11% ‘wall’ of Côte des Amerands and then the 7km 7.7% climb up to Saint-Gervais in view of Mont-Blanc.       

Stage 17 to Courchevel is arguably the queen stage, climbing the 2,304m-high Col de la Loze and then descends to finish on the altiport runway. Stage 20 is a final brutal multi-mountain stage in the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve Valley near Sallanches after the second rest day, but the 22km route between Passy and Combloux will test riders' bike handling skills and climbing as much as their time trialling. The stage includes the Côte de Domancy, where Bernard Hinault forged his 1980 Worlds victory, and which also featured as part of the final week time trial in the 2016 Tour.

2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was arguably the best climber of the last two editions of the Tour and he appears to have plenty of opportunities to go on the attack on the steep ascents in 2023.

Two-time winner  Tadej Pogačar  will no doubt relish the route on offer for next July’s challenge against Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and anyone else.

Tour de France 2023 Favourites stage 2: Sprint of strongmen

The average gradient of the Jaizkibel is deceptive, as the ascent also serves double digit sections. On the other hand, the steepest parts are located at the bottom of the climb and it’s still of long way from there. Firstly the rest of the climb, secondly the straightforward descent, and thirdly the flat run-in to the line. So yes, it would be a bold move to attack that early.

A likely scenario is that the breakaway is reeled in before or on the Jaizkibel and that a reduced peloton sprints for the win in San Sebastián.

Virtually all uphill action in the 2nd stage is packed together within 145 kilometres. Following a flat run the riders traverse the Col d’Udana (4.5 kilometres at 5.1%), Côte d’Aztiria (2.7 kilometres at 5.3%), the unclassified climbs to Larraitz-Txindoki (3.1 kilometres at 5.4%) and Altzo (2.1 kilometres at 7.3%), Côte d’Alkiza (4.2 kilometres at 5.7%), Côte de Gurutze (2.6 kilometres at 4.7%), and, as mentioned, the Jaizkibel (8.1 kilometres at 5.3%). There are 16.5 kilometres remaing at the summit.

The Jaizkibel descent is far from technical. The first part isn’t too steep, the last part does have some close corners and hairpins, but a moment later the riders are back down. The final 7.6 kilometres are flat, except for an uphill kick halfway.

A likely secenario is that the likes of Van der Poel, Van Aert, Alaphilippe, Girmay and Pidcock will sprint for the win.
