Tourists Arrival in Nepal: A Remarkable Revival in 2023

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Nepal, known for its breathtaking landscapes, towering peaks, and rich cultural heritage, has long been a favoured destination for global tourists. September 2023 witnessed a commendable rise in tourist arrivals by air, revealing a promising picture of the tourism sector’s resilience and revival.

A Glimpse into the Figures

According to the NTB , in September 2023, the number of tourists that arrived in Nepal by air was a staggering 91,012. This shows a significant growth compared to the previous years:

  • 2023 : 91,012
  • 2022 : 58,314
  • 2021 : 9,907
  • 2019 : 92,604

The numbers from 2020 and 2021 underscore the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global travel industry, particularly on Nepal’s tourism sector. However, the data from 2023 indicates a remarkable recovery, bringing the sector almost at par with the 2019 levels.

Moreover, the departure figures for September 2023 were reported at 69,422, whereas the cumulative number of tourists from January to September stood at an impressive 6,92,372.

When comparing the tourist arrival figures of 2023 to those of 2019, one of Nepal’s pre-pandemic peak years for tourism, the revival rate is a notable 98.28%.

Leading Tourist Generating Countries

The top 10 nations from where tourists arrived in Nepal in September 2023 are:

  • India : 28,694
  • China : 8,174
  • USA : 7,364

  • United Kingdom : 3,640
  • Sri Lanka : 3,011
  • Germany : 2,852
  • South Korea : 2,018
  • Israel : 1,734

With its proximity and cultural ties, India continued to lead the chart, followed by China and the USA. The diversity in the list of top 10 countries is a testament to Nepal’s universal appeal, drawing visitors from different parts of the world.

Rekindling the Tourism Flame

Several factors contributed to this resurgence in tourist arrivals:

  • Health and Safety Protocols : With the successful rollout of vaccines and robust health protocols, tourists feel more confident about travelling.
  • Promotional Campaigns : Nepal’s government, in collaboration with various tourism bodies, launched numerous promotional campaigns to attract visitors.
  • Pent-up Demand : After prolonged lockdowns and travel restrictions, there is a significant demand for travel and experiences, with Nepal being a top choice for nature and adventure seekers.
  • Diversified Tourism Offerings : Beyond trekking and mountaineering, Nepal has been promoting its cultural, religious, and wellness tourism offerings.

Looking Forward

The swift rebound of tourist arrivals in Nepal is a beacon of hope for the country’s tourism sector. With continued efforts, collaboration between governmental bodies and tourism stakeholders, and ongoing promotional campaigns, Nepal is well on its path to not just recovery but possibly even exceeding its past tourism records.

Nepal’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its tourists, coupled with its unparalleled natural and cultural offerings, will undeniably see the nation shine as a leading global tourist destination.

Nearly 100,000 foreign tourists entered Nepal in the previous month, indicating a strong recovery in the country's tourism sector compared to the past years.

According to the data released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) today, a total of 98,773 international tourists visited Nepal in April, which is a substantial increase from the 61,589 tourists who arrived in the corresponding month of 2022, 22,732 in April of 2021, and just 14 in April of 2020.

However, the arrivals are yet to recover to the pre-pandemic level, when 109,399 tourists had visited Nepal in April of 2019.

Maniraj Lamichhane, director of NTB, stated that the recent surge in tourist arrivals is a positive sign for Nepal's tourism industry and that the arrivals saw 90.28 per cent recovery last month compared to the corresponding month before the pandemic.

In April, India emerged as the top source country for tourists visiting Nepal, with a total of 31,437 Indian nationals visiting the country. This number constituted 31.83 per cent of the total international tourists who arrived in Nepal during the review period.

In comparison, the number of Indian tourists who visited Nepal during the same month in the previous year was 22,476.

The United States was the second-largest source country of tourists visiting Nepal in April, with a total of 8,413 American nationals arriving in the country. It was an increase from 7,344 American tourists who visited Nepal during the same month in the previous year.

The United Kingdom secured third position with 5,409 British tourists visiting Nepal in April.

Following the relaxation of COVID restrictions, China - Nepal's northern neighbour - came in the fourth position with 4,770. This figure is a massive surge by 1255.1 per cent from only 352 Chinese tourists who made Nepal their destination during the same month of 2022.

In terms of the geographic region, 35.88 per cent were from the SAARC countries, as per the NTB.

Likewise, 24.70 per cent of the total visitors were from European countries in April, while 10.21 per cent were from the Americas. The arrivals from Asia, Oceania and others stood at 14.84 per cent, 4.27 per cent, and 10.10 per cent, respectively.

Nepal’s tourism industry will soon revive its strength following the long duration hit by the Covid pandemic if the number of foreign tourists recorded in recent months is anything to go by.

Nepal Tourism Board  says 99,426 foreigners came to Nepal on tourist visas via air route in March, which is the highest of monthly arrival records since the Covid impact in early 2020.

The number makes up 78 per cent of the tourist arrival recorded in March 2019.

In the first three months of 2023, the country recorded 227,755 foreign tourists, informs the board’s director Mani Raj Lamichhane.

While there are hopes that the number will further rise in April thanks to the beginning of the mountaineering and trekking season, there are concerns that the new  rule banning solo trekking  might have  some adverse impact .

However, the highest number of tourists coming into the country is from India and the USA.

According to NTB data, 18,401 Indian tourists came to Nepal followed by 7,887 tourists from the USA. Thai tourists, interestingly, are third with 4,802 visiting Nepal.

Peak tourism in 2023

tourist in nepal 2023

In 1950, French mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal climbed Annapurna I, the first ever eight-thousander peak to be climbed.

The French team walked down to the Indian border, took a train to Raxaul, re-entered Nepal and trekked up to Kathmandu to be felicitated by Prime Minister Mohan Shamsher Rana.

After being closed to foreigners for centuries, Nepal opened up to the world for the first time. Three years later in 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary catapulted Nepal and the Himalaya into the global limelight.

But more than 70 years later, Nepal’s tourism sector has yet to take full advantage of the economic opportunities that the industry can provide for domestic job creation, production of local products and foreign exchange income.

That Nepal’s tourism has not lived up to its potential to become the backbone of the country’s economy while it grows exponentially in the rest of the world — including in other mountain countries — proves that there are a lot of missed opportunities.

Summing up summits

Visitors flock to Nepal for culture, wildlife and pilgrimage, but our unique selling points are the world’s highest mountains. Some 16% of tourists who visit Nepal come for trekking and climbing, and yet mountaineering opportunities have been woefully under-advertised.

In fact, when Mt Everest does get into the international media, it is either for the ‘traffic jams’ on the summit or as the mountain of garbage. Lately, it is for how global climate breakdown is melting its glaciers. Apart from eight out of the 14 eight-thousanders in the world which are in Nepal, there are 326 mountains above 5,500m that are open for climbing in the country.

Records show that in 1964, only 9,526 tourists entered Nepal, rising to 500,000 two decades later. But it took another 34 years for it to double and exceed 1 million in 2018.

In comparison, 40 million tourists visited the relatively more isolated Tibetan region of China in 2018. Even Bhutan, which is four times smaller than Nepal in area, and has only 700,000 population, has priced itself on the higher side and got 315,000 tourists. Cambodia welcomes more than 6 million tourists annually, promoting its main attraction: the Angkor Wat temple complex.

“2022 did not go as expected,” says Deepak Raj Joshi, former CEO of Nepal Tourism Board. “But 2023 can be much better because Nepal is a nature-based destination, has isolation-based activities – exactly what most people are looking for post-Covid.”

Nepal launched its Visit Nepal 2020 campaign just as Covid-19 struck. Nepal Airlines jets still have its logo on their fuselage, and it is a reminder of a failed drive. Tourism is beginning to pick up again after a two-year slump, but the prospects for 2023 are not so sure.

Even if the numbers pick up again, Nepal will not benefit as much as it should since it is selling itself too cheap. The tourist to Nepal spends an average of only $48 a day. Bhutan with its ‘high cost, low impact’ model, requires its tourists to spend $200-$250 per day in fees.

Despite the unique ‘product’ that Nepal has in its mountains, wildlife and heritage, the country is just not benefiting as it should from the tourism industry which now contributes less than 2% to the national economy.

In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, income from the tourism sector was Rs60.8 billion, which made up only 4.6% of the country's total foreign exchange earnings.

Tourism’s contribution to Nepal’s hard currency income reached its peak way back in 1981, when it made up 36.8%, up from 30.2% in 1965.

tourist in nepal 2023

At the time, Nepalis seeking to go abroad for work or studies benefited greatly from being able to exchange dollars for rupees before they left. Ironically, by the 1990s as more and more Nepalis pursued foreign employment their remittance replaced tourism as the major contributor to Nepal’s economy.

Now, money that Nepalis abroad send home makes up two-thirds of the country's total foreign exchange income, while tourism, exports, foreign investment and development assistance, combined, contribute only one-third. Taking the annual average from 2010-2020, the tourism sector on its own made up only 5.2% of Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves.

This is not to say that tourism has not contributed to the economies of localities within Nepal. The Khumbu region, for example has an annual per capita income more than five times higher than the national average. Trekking has transformed the economies of Langtang, Manang and Mustang, where locals previously depended almost entirely on agriculture or pastoralism.

Indeed, the trekking and mountaineering sectors employ more than 18,000 guides, 50,000 porters and other service providers. In 2018, more than 8,000 mountaineers paid over Rs680 million in climbing fees and created jobs for more than 1,700 Nepali high altitude guides, who are now also hired by expeditions on mountains abroad.

Before Covid, tourism was estimated to provide direct jobs for about 1 million Nepalis and indirectly benefit many more. But industry experts say that the potential for economic benefits should have been much higher.

Climbing numbers

Tourism in Nepal has been impacted by major historical events in recent times: the decade-long insurgency from 1996-2006 and subsequent political instability hit arrivals hard. Mountaineers had just returned to Mt Everest after a deadly avalanche in 2014 at Base Camp killed 16, when the earthquake struck one year later.

It was only in 2018 that Nepal was finally able to exceed its target of bringing 1 million tourists, and planners aimed higher to double it with the 2020 campaign.

Nepal spent $2 million dollars in the run-up to the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign. Much of that money was wasted, most Nepalis who lost their jobs migrated overseas for work, many hospitality sector businesses closed down, and hotel projects were abandoned.

Nepal did reap benefits from free promotion by films about mountaineering, including Nims Purja’s 14 Peaks , on streaming services like Netflix, when people were locked down worldwide during Covid.

In 2021, as Nepal confronted a deadly second wave of the virus, foreign visitors dropped to 150,962. The biggest drop was in Chinese arrivals, who were starting to top the list of tourists.

But in 2022, pent-up demand and post-Covid rebound has meant that the numbers were beginning to climb again — when Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

The war has hit the incomes of source countries in Europe and Asia hard, and Nepal’s own economy has gone into a slump. At a time when tourism income could supplant depleted foreign exchange reserves and falling exports, the industry was again adversely affected.

tourist in nepal 2023

But there was an uptick of arrivals in 2022. Numbers for January-November 2022 reached nearly 550,000, filling up hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara with most running at near-full occupancy during Dasain. Still, experts argue that Nepal has not been able to build enough of a portfolio in the world market as a tourist destination. Besides, the Kathmandu gateway is getting bad publicity from bloggers and influencers because of its chaos and air pollution.

“We have struggled to build a brand as a tourist country globally because of the lack of necessary tourism infrastructure inside the country,” says tourism entrepreneur Basanta Mishra. “This means our adventure tourism destinations are overshadowed by other global tourist attractions.”

Nepal has been diversifying its adventure tourism brand from just trekking and mountaineering to white water rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, ziplines, canyoning and other sports. But sustaining adventure tourism will be a tall order in the absence of proper infrastructure or promotion in the global market.

“Nepal has never looked into its full potential as a tourism destination beyond the mountains,” says Suraj Vaidya who led the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign. “Even with mountain tourism, we have failed to look beyond EBC and ABC, when the far-western mountains have so much to offer."

"We have to also look beyond Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. We need to look at Nepal as more than a two-season destination,” adds Vaidya. "But at the same time, we need to be careful about how we choose to develop destinations with historic significance so that we preserve and maintain the heritage that is so inherently ours.”

The good news is that Nepal is seeing improvements in tourism infrastructure over the years, especially in the hospitality sector. In recent years, more than a dozen ‘star’ hotels as well as multinational hotel chains have opened up in Nepal, with more under construction. And although new international airports have opened in Pokhara and Bhairahawa, poor planning has meant that there is almost no prospect of international flights from there. Meanwhile, it can take up to 9 hours to drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara because of congestion and poor roads.

But above all, Nepal’s tourism sector has not been a priority for planners even though they have never tired of giving speeches about its potential for decades.

“Being the only European airline flying to Kathmandu, we hope to surpass 2022 figures,” says Serkan Basar, General Manager of Turkish Airlines Kathmandu. “Tourism Ministry and private sector should be in full cooperation for the betterment of the country as a tourist destination.”

Joshi agrees: “Tourism cannot develop in isolation. There needs to be multi-level coordination between tourism institutions, concerned ministries, as well as diplomatic missions across the world to effectively maximise our tourism potential.”

Should Nepal promote high-end tourism rather than just chase numbers of arrivals? There has been no discussion on carrying capacity for various trekking areas and mountaineering peaks.

Given its topography, location and culture, Nepal should be able to sell itself. Still, promotion has been sloppy, ad hoc and inadequate — especially to China and India which are already replacing arrivals from Europe and the Americas.

Says tourism analyst Rajiv Dahal: “Nepal’s policymakers do not yet understand that reviving the tourism sector is in the country’s best interest, and that tourism will not gain momentum unless its potential is fully explored.”

Journey to a Million: Nepal's Tourism Resurgence

Birendra Shrestha

Jan 03, 2024

KATHMANDU, Jan 03:Nepal's tourism, bouncing back with a remarkable 1 million visitors in 2023, signals a strong recovery post-pandemic. Key figures in the industry share their views on what fueled this resurgence, the hurdles faced, and the promising future ahead.

In 2023, as reported by Mani Lamichhane, Director of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). Monthly figures reveal a consistent flow. January commenced with 55,074 visitors, followed by 73,255 in February, 99,428 in March, 98,774 in April, 77,702 in May, 72,248 in July, 57,725 in August, 67,153 in September, 91,012 in October, 18,630 in November, and culminating in the substantial figure of 96,566 in December.

This resurgence follows a challenging period during the Covid-19 pandemic. Comparatively, 2023 reached 80 percent of the 2019's pre-pandemic milestone of 1.2 million visitors. 400,202 more tourists visited Nepal compared to 2022 which is a 40 percent increase.

Bijaya Amatya, Kora Tour's CEO, highlighted the tourist backlog post-pandemic due to travel bans being lifted. NTB promotions and private sector contributions played a significant role. Tourist stats have improved, including a rise in high-end visitors and new resorts in secluded areas. However, traditional trekking routes face challenges due to destruction of old routes and over saturation of vehicle roads.

He believes that approximately 45% of visitors are NRNs or Indian businessmen. A separate visa for immigrants is planned from 2024. The removal of Nepal from the EU blacklist is a top priority, emphasizing the need to address NTB's internal issues. Amatya suggests NTB should focus on marketing over infrastructure, leaving the latter to the government. New tours and markets are being explored, with plans to attract tourists from places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos.

Mani Lamicchane, Head of Research, planning and monitoring of NTB, highlighted the global tourism revival and the effectiveness of promotional programs, emphasizing improved relations with India. Unified efforts and support from everyone have contributed to the success. Although luxury tourists are gradually increasing, the primary focus was on reaching the target of 1 million visitors, which has been accomplished.

Statistics on tourists, including diplomatic missions and NRNs, are now more dispersed among many hotels. The new policy for accurate counting will be implemented this month. The "Visit Nepal Year" campaign by the government is in progress. Some companies are actively involved in eco-tourism, though accurate tracking of eco-tourists is a challenge. Engagement with women's groups and local porters is ongoing, and exploration of new places is underway. Lamicchane expressed satisfaction with the current direction of progress.

Sajan Shakya, general secretary and spokesperson of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) delves into Nepal's tourism trends, highlighting peak trekking seasons and diverse visitor interests. Thamel, with its alluring hotels, plays a pivotal role in this appeal.

HAN has significantly aided its members with marketing, standardization, and training, resulting in an enhanced tourist experience. Quality of Nepal's hotel sector has increased as there are nine more 5-star hotels from 2019. While acknowledging 1 million recorded arrivals, Shakya stresses the importance of addressing unrecorded visits, including homestays. He advocates for government intervention in infrastructure development, aiming for improved flight connectivity and roads.

Shakya envisions the private sector sustaining 3 million tourists through strategic efforts, including lobbying, new airport operations, and promotional expansions across India, China, and Europe. HAN's support to its members includes marketing, standardization, and training. Shakya called for government infrastructure development and believes the private sector can sustain 3 million tourists. HAN aims to achieve this through lobbying and by continuing promotional programs.

In conclusion, the three perspectives converge on Nepal's tourism success, emphasizing collaboration, overcoming challenges, and strategic planning for sustained growth. The industry leaders foresee a positive trajectory and remain optimistic about Nepal's tourism potential beyond 2023.

Nepal Tourism Decade 2023-2032 : Tourism Sector Hopes to Set New Milestones in the Next Decade

tourist in nepal 2023

The new tourism promotion campaign aims to bring 3.5 million tourists in the next 10 years

The Nepali tourism sector went through a tumultuous three years in the wake of the global outbreak of the coronavirus that devastated international travel. But with the subsiding of the pandemic, the sector is now buzzing with new plans, expansion, and growth strategies. The surge in tourist arrivals in 2022 along with the start of the commercial operation of Pokhara Regional International Airport and the Gautam Buddha International Airport have signaled that Nepal is ready to welcome international guests more than ever.

tourist in nepal 2023

Developed by a four-member expert panel led by the former Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) CEO Prachanda Man Shrestha, the framework has set ambitious targets such as increasing tourist spending to USD 125 daily from the current USD 48, creating 1 million direct jobs in the tourism and increasing the sector’s contribution to national GDP to 10 percent.

The government has planned to bring the tourist numbers to pre-pandemic levels by 2024 and increase arrivals in each subsequent year by 15 percent.

The decade will have tourism campaigns organized across the country province-wise. While 2023 will be the year for preparations, 2024 will be the tourism campaign year in Bagmati Province, 2025 in Gandaki Province, and 2027 in Lumbini Province. In 2028, the focus will be on Madesh Province, while campaigns will be organized in 2029, 2030, and 2031 in Sudur Paschhim, Province 1, and Karnali Province, respectively. The year 2026 and 2032 will be marked by national-level programs.

tourist in nepal 2023

Despite the government’s grand tourism plan, there are still some stumbling blocks that could derail the recovery prospect. For Nepal to get a good number of international tourists in the coming years, the operation of two recently built international airports is critical in this context. Tourism entrepreneurs agree there is a dire need to improve connectivity if Nepal wants to gain from the post-pandemic period in which tourist inflow is expected to surge.

Tourist Arrivals in Nepal Reach 10 Lakh 15 Thousand in 2023, Indian and American Visits Encouraging

Tue, jan 2, 2024 2:25 pm on latest , economy ,.

tourist in nepal 2023

Nepal Tourism Board reports that the year 2023 witnessed a robust tourism influx, welcoming 10 lakh 14 thousand 876 tourists, marking an increase of 4,728 compared to 2022, where 6 lakh 14 thousand 148 tourists visited the country.

Encouragingly, the arrival of Indian and American tourists has been a significant contributor to this growth. Director of Nepal Tourism Board, Maniraj Lamichhane, mentioned that as China opens its borders, the number of Chinese tourists is also on the rise, contributing to an overall positive trend in tourist arrivals.

The data reveals that in 2023, 3,19,936 tourists from India visited Nepal, surpassing the figures from 2019, where 2 lakh 54 thousand 150 Indian tourists arrived. The American tourist count for the year 2023 was 100,357, exceeding the 2019 count of 93,241. Chinese tourist arrivals in 2023 amounted to 60,878, reflecting a positive shift compared to the 2019 figure of 169,543.

This achievement marks the third consecutive year with tourist arrivals surpassing 10 lakh, following 2018 and 2019. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the subsequent years, Nepal has successfully maintained a steady growth in its tourism sector.

The government's 10 lakh tourist target for 2023 was met, and Minister Sudan Kirati emphasized the importance of promoting local tourism. Anticipating an exciting 2024, experts cite improved China-Nepal connectivity, including a direct Kathmandu-Lhasa flight by Himalaya Airlines. President of HAN, Binayak Shah, believes Nepal has hosted 30-35 lakh tourists till date and shall increase with sincere government efforts.

Prime Minister Prachanda aims to double arrivals to 20 lakhs in 2024, urging activation of the tourism decade program and infrastructure development, signaling positive prospects for Nepal's tourism industry. This positive trend in tourist arrivals serves as a ray of hope for the tourism industry, heralding expectations for continued growth and prosperity in the coming years.

99,426 foreign tourists visit Nepal in March 2023, the highest since the Covid years

Onlinekhabar

Kathmandu, April 2

Nepal welcomes one million tourists, a post-Covid record

Nepal welcomes one million tourists, a post-Covid record

Sangam Prasain

Things are looking up for Nepali tourism.

The country welcomed 1 million tourists between January and December, following China’s border reopening and record arrivals from India.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the country’s tourism promotional body, the arrival numbers crossed the million mark on Wednesday, the first time in four years.

This is the third instance that Nepal has received over a million tourists.

The rise in tourist arrivals has cheered the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led administration at a time when other economic indicators are poor and the country is witnessing a massive out-migration due to the lack of decent job opportunities at home.

Arrivals crossed the coveted one-million mark for the first time in 2018, with 1.17 million foreign tourists streaming into the country.

In 2019, the number rose slightly, to 1.19 million, following better flight connectivity with several Chinese cities.

Then the Covid pandemic started in early 2020, bringing arrivals to a standstill.

“It’s a moment to cheer. We have crossed a million milestone again,” said Mani Raj Lamichhane, spokesman for the Nepal Tourism Board. “Though we have recovered 85 percent, there is a lot to do.”

Nepal received 230,085 and 150,962 tourists in 2020 and 2021, respectively. In 2022, the foreign tourist numbers shot up to 614,869.

Travel restrictions and an economic slowdown triggered by the Covid pandemic delivered a massive blow to Nepal's burgeoning tourism industry, decimating revenues and profits after 2020.

Following the recovery in arrivals, profit levels of most luxury hotels surpassed pre-pandemic figures as the end of social restrictions unleashed pent-up demand for parties and conventions, hoteliers said.

India was the top tourist source market for Nepal, with a cumulative number of arrivals at 314,000 as of December 27, followed by the United States (100,000) and China (60,000), according to the board statistics.

Nepal welcomed an all-time high number of Indian visitors.

As the Tibetan authorities denied access to nearly 50,000 Indian pilgrims who had booked the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra this year, they were forced to visit Nepal’s holy places like Muktinath and Lumbini on the same package, tour operators dealing with the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra package told the Post.

Indian visitors entering Nepal over land are not counted as tourists.

In 2019, according to the government’s statistics, the country had received 254,150 Indian travellers.

According to Lamichhane, Chinese tourist arrivals rose sharply following the opening of the borders and increased flight movement from the northern neighbour.

In March, Beijing allowed its citizens to travel to Nepal as tourists after more than three years.

Since March 15, the Chinese government allowed its national travel agencies and online travel companies to resume, on a pilot basis, outbound group tours for Chinese citizens to some countries, including Nepal.

China was Nepal’s second-largest tourism source market after India before the start of the Covid pandemic.

Arrivals from the northern neighbour were blocked after all flights linking China and Nepal were suspended.

Chinese arrivals to Nepal had crossed the 100,000 mark for the first time in 2013, largely due to the improved air links between the two countries. In 2014, Nepal received 123,805 Chinese visitors.

The back-to-back 2015 earthquake and the blockade by India led to arrivals from China dropping to a four-year low of 64,675 individuals in 2015, down 47.76 percent from 2014.

The surface road at the Tatopani border point where Nepal used to receive a large number of Chinese tourists was also blocked.

On December 25, 2015, Nepal announced visa exemption for Chinese tourists, giving them the same treatment accorded to South Asian visitors, in a bid to revive flagging arrivals. The ‘free-visa’ scheme was implemented in January 2016.

Thereon, tourist arrivals from China started rising steadily, and Nepal saw a strong 46.8 percent growth in tourist arrivals from China, to reach 153,633 visitors in 2018.

In 2019, Nepal received a record 169,543 Chinese tourists.

The number fell to 19,257 in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, there were 6,198 and 9,599 Chinese tourists in Nepal—comprising mostly diplomats and those who got stranded in third countries who came to Nepal when Beijing enforced never-ending lockdowns.

At a time of booming Chinese economy, Nepali investors started to build more and more luxury hotels.

Instead of serving a bucket in the bathroom as preferred by Indian tourists, hoteliers say, they started serving noodles.

Kishore Raj Pandey, chairman of Saathi Nepal Travel and Tours, who was the first person to bring Chinese tourists to Nepal in 2001, said he had a booking for 200 Chinese tourists in January.

“So far, it’s a good business season for us.”

He said the number of Chinese visitors may increase during their week-long holiday from February 10 to 17, next year.

However, most tour operators complain about the poor roads connecting tourist hotspots like Chitwan, Pokhara and Lumbini with Kathmandu.

“It takes six hours to reach Chitwan from Kathmandu nowadays and 12 hours to reach Pokhara,” said Pandey.

“The airfare is expensive.”

Tour operators say that the government can, at the least, provide subsidies for airlines and make airfare for foreign passengers equal to the airfare for domestic passengers until the road projects are completed.

For instance, airlines charge $85 for a 25-minute Kathmandu-Pokhara flight. For a Nepali passenger, the airfare on the same route is almost half.

Travel and tour operators say that the return of Chinese tourists to Nepal could give a big boost to Nepal’s economy. A Chinese tourist currently spends between $300 and $400 for a week-long package, excluding shopping.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have said in their reports that Nepal’s economy is expected to rebound with a strong growth in tourism.

According to Lamichhane of the Nepal Tourism Board, if Nepal’s two new international airports in Bhairahawa and Pokhara are better promoted, the arrivals figure may double to 2 million next year.

The geopolitical tussles over the two international airports may not bode well for the country’s tourism, say observers.

They said the government should act wisely to promote the airports—one, a gateway to Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha and the other, an entrypoint to Annapurna, a popular destination for trekkers.

Number of Tourist Visiting Nepal Reached 470,000 In First Half Of 2023

New spotlight online.

tourist in nepal 2023

Nepal has welcomed 476,481 international tourists in the first six months of 2023. This is an average of 79,413 tourists every month.

Mani Raj Lamichhane, head of the Research, Planning and Monitoring Department at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), said this is an almost 97 per cent recovery to the pre-pandemic levels. In June 2019, a total of 74,883 tourists arrived in the country.

The year immediately before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, was one of the best years for tourism in Nepal. A total of 1,197,191 foreign tourists entered the country by land and air that year.

This is the highest number the country had ever recorded. This means that, on average, 99,765 tourists came to Nepal every month that year.

But in 2020, the year the coronavirus outbreak began in Nepal, the number of foreign tourists plummeted to 230,085.

In 2021, it fell still further to 150,962. The year 2022 saw a slight uptick to 614,869.

To revitalise the tourism sector of the country, the government announced in its budget for the Fiscal Year 2023/24 that it would celebrate the 10 years from 2023 to 2033 as the tourism decade and shared its intention to bring 1 million tourists into the country in 2023.

The latter is in line with the target unveiled by the NTB last year and one that it has since maintained is possible by attracting visitors from Asia.

So far this year, the highest number of tourists came from India, as per the NTB. From January to June, 167,605 came from our southern neighbour.

The second highest number, 49,433, came from the United States.

The United Kingdom, China and Australia were the third, fourth and fifth largest source markets for Nepali tourism respectively.

Since the start of this Gregorian year, 24, 264, 20, 117 and 17,696 tourists have come from these three countries.

In June alone, 72,250 foreigners came to Nepal by air, according to the Department of Immigration.

More than one million tourists arrive in 2023

blog

Kathmandu, Dec 30: More than one million foreign tourists came to visit Nepal via air in the year 2023.

According to the statistics of the Nepal Tourism Board, 1,008,614 tourists came to Nepal as of 5:00 am today morning.

With this, the government's goal of bringing in one million foreign tourists in 2023 has been fulfilled. In the budget of the current fiscal year, the government had mentioned that the number of foreign tourists visiting Nepal would be increased to 0ne million in 2023.

The tourism of the country hit badly by the COVID-19 pandemic has almost revived to its original state. The NTB says that tourism has recovered this year by almost 85 percent.

In 2019, around 1.2 million foreign tourists had visited the country. "The arrival of tourists this year is encouraging", said NTB Director Maniraj Lamichhane. More than 1 million tourists have entered through the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Likewise, president of Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), Binayak Shah, expects the arrival of tourists to further increase in the coming days. If the government expands its partnership with the private sector, tourists will increase in the future.

It may be noted that the government has announced 2025 as the Visit Nepal Year. Furthermore, the year 2023 to 2032 is being celebrated as the tourism decade with a target of bringing in 3.5 million tourists.

Meanwhile, the number of Indian tourists has increased significantly this year. In 2019, 254,150 Indian tourists came to Nepal while the number is 317,481 this year. Likewise, the number of American tourists reached 99,985 this year. In 2019, 93,241 American tourists had arrived to visit Nepal.

Likewise, the number of Chinese tourists is gradually increasing ,with visit by 60,160 Chinese nationals this year. In 2019, 169,543 Chinese tourists had come to Nepal.(RSS)

The other side of Nepal

A striking pagoda with cantilevered wooden roofs, towers above Bhaktapur, a royal city in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Close by is an Indian-style temple whose statues of deities are carved in stone. Nepal is a staple on the Indian tourist map and had a 33 per cent rise in Indian travellers flying into the country in 2023. The mountain country’s religious diversity evidenced in its wealth of temples, monasteries and stupas is no secret. Historically it stands at the cultural crossroads of India, Tibet and China since myriad ethnic groups and communities have influenced its architecture.

Nepal is witnessing an indigenous architectural rediscovery as can be observed in Bhaktapur’s new boutique hotel, The Nanee (Nepalese for small courtyard), tucked into a narrow lane which takes inspiration from the Newari houses built around a courtyard. “The homes here are typically multi-storeyed, with large courtyards that serve as gathering places for families and friends,” explains host Aditya Piya. Aware of seismic dangers, traditional Newari houses incorporated earthquake-resistant techniques such as interlocking bricks, flexible joints and stone foundations. The five-tiered Nyatapola Pagoda temple is an example since it has never been destroyed ever by any earthquake.

A striking element of Nepali architecture is its intricate woodwork. The Bhaktapur palace of 55 windows at the Durbar Square has dozens of carved timber windows, each with different designs. Some have mythological and religious themes with geometric and floral motifs. Bhaktapur local Rita Suwal explains that Nepal has three distinct architectural styles—the Pagoda, Shikhara and the Stupa. The first features multiple tiers of roofs, each diminishing in size, creating an elegant and tapering structure. The struts that support each level are elaborately carved and decorated. Inspired by ancient Indian architectural principles, Hindu temples in Nepal showcase the Shikhara style through towering spires and stone carvings reminiscent of pyramids. A prime examples is the Pashupatinath Temple. Its dome-shaped Stupa style is thought to have been introduced to Nepal by Emperor Asoka. With a broad base and tapering towards the top, Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu exemplifies his taste. The soft chants and smell of incense imparts a Zen vibe here.

Like all indigenous architecture, Nepal’s too is influenced by topography. On the western edge of Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal, along the banks of the Narayani River stands the Sanctuary Resort. Designed by Sri Lankan architect Palinda Kannangara, who is influenced by the legendary Geoffrey Bawa, it has stone cottages with rustic interiors that mirrors the dwellings of the local Tharu people. “We designed the property to merge seamlessly with the landscape using local bamboo and stone. The bamboo screens were made by women from the village,” explains Palinda.

For an architecture aficionado, Nepal is Shangrila. Owner Dwarika Das Shreshta of Dwarika’s Hotel in Kathmandu is a time traveller through his country’s design age. In 1952, he saw a man cutting an old carved pillar of a building to use as firewood. The thought of his country’s artistic ancestry being burned, set him on a mission. He started collecting old window frames, pillars and doors for his hotel, which feels more like a heritage museum than a tourist refuge. Red brick and exposed wooden beams, intricately carved windows and doors including a 13th-century door, are reminders that Nepal has woken up to its past treasures.

16.8 million visitors: Why Nashville's record-breaking tourism industry keeps growing

tourist in nepal 2023

  • The number of people visiting Nashville is expected to reach 17.5 million by 2025.
  • The majority of travelers are classified as leisure, but convention and business travel demand is strong.

Nashville's tourism industry in 2023 broke yet another record.

Visitor spending last year came in at a whopping $10.56 billion, which is about a 6% increase from 2022. That's according to an analysis by the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. published this week.

“We don’t take our destination’s success for granted and, in our planning, we work not only on today and tomorrow, but also next year and next decade to keep our industry growing," said NCVC President and CEO Deana Ivey in a news release.

The NCVC forecasted that tourism growth will continue through 2027, when yearly visitors are expected to climb to 18.1 million people.

Here's what you should know about Nashville's tourism industry.

How many tourists visit Nashville each year?

The city saw a record 16.8 million visitors in 2023, up 4% from 2022, which saw 16.2 million visitors.

Forecasts by the NCVC show 17.1 million visitors in 2024 and 17.5 million the following year in 2025.

Of the 16.8 million visitors in 2023, 11.2 million are overnight visitors and 5.6 million are day visitors. Of those staying overnight, 7.9 million stayed in hotels, 1.2 million in short-term rentals and 2 million with friends and family, according to the NCVC.

Why are tourists visiting Nashville?

According to estimates from Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company, 64% of visitors are leisure travelers, while 36% come for conventions and business reasons.

Cvent, an event planning and marketing company, recently named Nashville third in North America for conventions and large meetings, behind Orlando, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Several Nashville hotels were also ranked highly by Cvent as top meeting destinations. Nashville's Grand Hyatt and Omni Hotels earned the number one and number two spots, respectively. The Nashville JW Marriott claimed the fourth spot, while the city's Renaissance was ranked fifth.

Blockbuster weekends like the Taylor Swift Era's Tour Nashville leg in 2023 and Morgan Wallen's recent tour stop at Nissan Stadium serve as tentpoles for the city's tourism industry. May 3 and 4 , supported by Wallen's concerts, Predator's playoffs, college commencements and more, constituted a record-breaking weekend for hotel room bookings with more than 75,000 rooms sold.

Will Nashville tourism slow down in 2024?

National tourism trends forecast slowing leisure travel spending as people become more budget conscious amid a slowing economy, according to Tourism Economics.

In the immediate years following the pandemic, "revenge travel" surged as people tried to make up for lost time during the COVID-19 pandemic. By some estimates, that trend is slowing down.

Convention and business travel demand remains strong in Nashville, a city that outpaces the rest of the country and competitor cities, according to the NCVC. Even as visitor growth begins to stabilize, there are currently more than 2,000 hotel rooms under construction in Nashville, with a total of 13,000 in the pipeline.

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

International health insurance and travel insurance serve different purposes. While both may cover medical expenses, international health insurance provides long-term health insurance for working abroad. Meanwhile, travel insurance offers short-term coverage for the duration of your trip.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.
