Every time I look down on this timeless town,
whether blue or gray be her skies,
whether loud be her cheers, or whether soft be her tears,
more and more do I realize that…I love Paris. – Ella Fitzgerald.

Paris – “La Ville-Lumière”, (the city of light) and “la reine du monde” (the queen of the world). Perhaps you’ve already discovered her. Or, maybe this will be your first encounter- a journey you’ve been dreaming of taking for a long time.

Paris for seniors.com will be your gentle guide –helping you make the most out of this remarkable city with invaluable information – carefully collected with your needs in mind. for, although you may be in the autumn or even winter years of your life, in paris, you are sure to find your spring., who we are – a family-run business in its 14th year of helping seniors, multi-generational families and mobility-challenged visitors navigate and enjoy paris., geneviève spicer. born to a french mother and a canadian father, genevieve is a bilingual voice over artist and multimedia producer  with a specialty in creating programming  and content for active seniors. she has lived in france, japan, indonesia and canada and is known for her natural ability to adapt to and embrace new countries and cultures., geneviève works with a talented team of dedicated, licensed city tour guides and professional driving partners to bring you the best of paris – before you book your flight, train, or boat.

Keith, with daughter, Geneviève and grand-daughter, Grace.

Keith Spicer a.k.a . Dad (a.k.a Gpa) was co-founder and Geneviève’s partner-in-fun at Paris for Seniors. He played many roles in his life (the starring one that of exceptional, doting father) and made a real difference in preserving French language rights in his own country, Canada. He passed away on August 24 of this year.

France was keith’s second home and paris his favorite place in the world.  he first discovered the city of light as a student in the 1950’s – when he also met a ravissante french girl whom he would marry., after a long career in newspapers, tv, government and media-telecom consulting, keith retired in the 1990’s.  he went back to his beloved latin quarter and lived there for 20 years. his knowledge of french culture, history and politics was exceptional as was his love for paris. in his late seventies he wrote an ode to his favorite city, paris passions-watching the french being brilliant and bizarre ”,  followed by the thriller murder by champagne set in his second favorite french city – reims., in 2011, keith convinced his daughter, geneviève, to move to paris with her family – husband, two daughters, max the border collie and flame, le chat. together, they would explore paris (with dad  as “ senior advisor”)  and share with others, on paris for seniors.com, their observations, ideas and accessible itineraries. they would conquer would-be visitors pre-trip trepidations with useful resources and fun, informative articles, newsletters and videos about safety, transportation and interacting with the french. they’d also share off-the-beaten-track places and experiences in paris., dad adored writing for our newsletters, helping plan itineraries, giving tours and making paris videos with his cherished grand-daughters. dad- we had the time of our lives – we truly did. merci papa..

Keith Spicer

Grace Spicer-Pilon

Keith’s grand-daughter, grace, has picked up the torch to honour her grandpa’s legacy of sharing paris with others. half of the dynamic duo of g & g  (gracie and grandpa), grace spent much of her childhood exploring paris with her grand-father and is very familiar with the dangers, discounts and great times that await seniors here.  she is now studying in paris and working as a pfs guide and itinerary planner along with our other guides..

Grace Spicer-Pilon continues the tradition as a PFS guide and itinerary planner.

PFS exists to take the bugs out of travel to Paris before you leave the comfort of home and to give you peace of mind while you are here.

While we are called “paris for seniors”  you don’t need to be 50  (that’s a senior here in paris) to call on us. we really just consider ourselves “your gentle guide to paris”, safety & mobility – perhaps you, or a family member with mobility or health issues, are coming to paris and getting around the city, in addition to healthcare and safety, are a concern., keith spicer, far left, and his daughter, geneviève, far right, are the founders of pfs and are pictured here with the wonderful cecilia and her husband on a special graduation trip for their 18 year-old daughter., a local travel companion – maybe you are traveling on your own and you don’t speak a word of french and feel a bit nervous about navigating this busy cosmopolitan capital., elizabeth robertson of ottawa, canada with pfs guide, kirk, at montmartre., sharon at the medici fountain in the luxembourg gardens, a milestone trip – perhaps you’re planning a special milestone trip for yourself or a loved one and you want to organize something really extraordinary for them., wayne and venita of ottawa, canada – 50th wedding anniversary trip, and still going strong,   travel “en-famille” – maybe you’re dreaming about “grand-travel” (travel with your grand-children) or “multi-generational family travel but the very thought of managing the interests, physical capabilities and energy levels of different age groups is daunting.,   good times with grandmaman and grandpa, this is where we come in. pfs core services include: “mon ami in paris” trip planning and facilitation service which includes our “help me” – emergency liaison service. we also offer the “ promenade dans le 5ème ” walking tour and special day-trip planning outside of paris. pfs visitors also benefit from our special reduced-rate airport/train station transfer service., as a family-run business working with the best service providers in town, we pride ourselves on the special attention we offer all of our clients-including seniors and travelers with disabilities who need some extra tlc to make their trip special and secure., our fully bilingual (english and french), paris-based team specializes in customized, pre-trip consulting and planning and on-site orientation and facilitation. we also give private, go-at-your-own pace walking or wheel-chair assisted tours —not the kind where you struggle to keep up with a yellow or red flag and strain to hear your guide, if walking is not your favorite option, let one of our specially trained pfs drivers give you and your travel companions a private day or night “top ten” monuments tour of paris, a day-trip to giverney or versailles or take you on a fun shopping trip., our  “pfs prestige tour” vehicles are new, clean and air-conditioned and our drivers have their professional designation as chauffeurs de voiture de tourisme (official tourism drivers) which means they have special parking privileges which allow them to park and stop almost anywhere so that you can take pictures or break for lunch on a terrace. they also have their sauveteur/sécouriste card and are trained to handle potential emergency situations., our drivers also do airport transfers and will greet you at the airport with a pfs prestige sign with your name on it..

Tips for Senior Travelers in Paris

Senior Travel:  Many discounts are available to men and women over 60. Although they often seem to apply only to residents of E.U. countries, discounts can be had by announcing at the ticket window of a museum or monument that you are 60 years old or more. You may not receive a discount, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. “Senior,” incidentally, is pronounced seenyore in France. Senior citizens do not get a discount for traveling on public transport in Paris, but the national trains do offer them. Check www.oui.sncf for details.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Paris for Seniors: Travel Made Easier and Fun for my 84-year-old Mother

Paris for seniors

“One last time…I want to go back to Paris one last time before I die” Argh.

I cringe every time I hear that line. It’s just too darned macabre ( maman will live forever, after all.)

This is not my mom’s first “farewell tour” back to the old country. We have returned to France twice in the last decade with her firmly believing that “this could be it”.

Mom was a young 79-year old when we were last in Paris. On that trip, she was drinking rosé and dancing at Ernest Hemingway’s Jazz Bar at the Closerie des Lilas. She was hoofing it up the steep, cobblestoned rue Mouffetard and scooting down metro stairs to get around the city with me.

Now, at 84, and emerging from two years of isolation during “ la grande pause, ” maman is using a walker and only weighs 90 pounds. Her longing to return seems more pressing – not because of her age but because she needs this. I need this. We have to get back to Paris where both of our hearts sing.

So, last Mother’s Day, I decided that this very special trip was going to happen. It couldn’t be that challenging, right? After all, I run a company called Paris for Seniors and itinerary planning is what I do. But, making plans and actually traveling with a senior – especially your own mother – are very different experiences.

senior trips to paris france

Where to Begin? Good Planning

I spent years working in video production, which involves three phases: pre-production, production and post-production. During that time, I learned that the success of “the show” rides on well thought-out pre-planning. This applies perfectly to trip-planning as well. Take the bugs out of travel before departure – from the comfort of your home.

Start early, make lists about what you want to see and do and most importantly, have fun doing it. Mom mostly wanted to go back to her old neighborhood in the Latin Quarter where she was once a student. I just wanted to be back in Paris – anywhere.

How to Fly Stress-free with Seniors

We booked our travel in May for an August departure. We decided to use Air France for their stellar reputation and, I’ll be honest, their champagne option for all, not just those in business class. The food, wine and bubbles are included in a regular economy fare and the cabin crew and wheelchair assistance service are exceptional.

Even though my husband, Kirk, and I were traveling with mom, we booked full wheelchair assistance. This allowed mom, and her porters (us) to pre-board. When you’re traveling with a senior with a walker, a big carry-on bag and a violin (she’s a gifted musician), along with your own carry-on, you need the space and the time that pre-boarding allows. You know what it’s like…hundreds of passengers pushing through that narrow aisle, jockeying for overhead bins.

senior trips to paris france

When we landed (feeling great I might add), we were the last off the plane but it was in the Zen of a cleared-out cabin with an attendant and a comfy wheelchair waiting for maman at the exit. We were whisked away through special doors and secret elevators and then cleared seamlessly through customs and security.

We had pre-ordered a personal pick-up service where, just outside the Arrivals gate, a well-dressed driver was holding up a sign with maman ’s name on it. He became the wheelchair pusher and the Air France attendant with us helped with all the luggage we had retrieved.

Our reserved ride was in a special parking zone for designated tourism vehicles and before we knew it, we were loaded into the van, offered cold Evian and snacks, and on our way to our hotel.

Where to Stay: Your Home Away from Home

For our first week in Paris, our friend had offered us her lovely home in the 19 th arrondissement . For week two, we chose a hotel near my old Parisian neighborhood in the Latin Quarter. The Best Western La Demeure came recommended to me by my daughter, Maddy, a world traveller with excellent taste. I normally stay in more rustic hotels but La Demeure was just perfect for this trip with maman .  Our room was so Parisian – by this, I mean elegant white bed linens, high ceilings and the classic black Haussmannian wrought iron balconies that are unique to Paris. We even had a beautiful marble fireplace upon which I placed maman ’s violin.

Our special treat every morning was le petit déjeuner au lit  (breakfast in bed). Oh, how decadent to dip buttery croissants into our café crèmes while maman did her morning crosswords and I read my Maigret mystery novel. I discovered that sticking to maman ’s regular at-home morning routine was important and made for a gentle, unrushed start to each new day. We would also go over our plan for the day, leisurely get ready, and then I would call our driver…

Best Way to Get Around the City of Light

While my mother could use the metro on her last visit to Paris, we decided to bite the bullet and just order taxis. The metro has just too many stairs and, while maman could have navigated it, I would have had to carry our bags and her walker and I was just not up for that. I’m no spring chicken myself!

Most of my Paris for Seniors clients are adult children who want to give their parents a “Bucket List” type experience of Paris. Sometimes the seniors are travelling alone; sometimes they’re accompanied by their children and grandchildren.

While it may cost more, I always recommend that older seniors (alone or with their family) hire a private English-speaking driver or negotiate with an Uber or taxi driver for a tour of city highlights or other places (if the senior speaks French). This allows “vintage visitors” to travel around Paris in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and gives them the freedom to stop anywhere they please to get out, explore, use the loo or sit in a café. One can also hire a personal guide to assist while visiting the sites or to get an off-the-beaten-track tour.

Most tourists usually only have a few days in Paris. While taking a métro or bus saves you some money, you will lose time (unless there’s a huge traffic jam) and precious energy using public transportation. I have experienced first-hand how tiring and stressful it can be to get down to the hot, crowded métro or wait for a bus on the wrong side of the street. Trying to hail a taxi or find a taxi stand also takes time away from enjoying the city. Push the easy button and get good, comfortable transportation and go only where you want to go!

Maman and I found our personal (taxi) driver on our second day in Paris. Mr. B rescued us from the blazing sun where we were wilting waiting for a bus. He was very knowledgeable and so helpful that I asked him if he could be our driver while in Paris. He answered very enthusiastically, “ Bien sûr chères Mesdames – voici mon numèro WhatsApp .”

Install WhatsApp on Your Cell Phone

Parisians love WhatsApp and truly, what’s not to love? It’s free and so easy to use. Just add your driver to your contacts. We used WhatsApp with Monsieur B throughout our four days in Paris. We would message him at the beginning of our day with “the plan.” Day One was a right bank highlights tour.

More than just our driver, Mr. B helped my mother get her walker out of the car, took pictures of us everywhere and parked close by while we would sit on a terrace for a glass of crisp rosé in Montmartre, the Louvre, and the Marais.

Day Two was the left bank where maman wanted to see her old university, la Sorbonne, stroll in the Luxembourg Gardens and then visit the apartment on boulevard Montparnasse where she and my Canadian dad used to “study together” in the late 1950’s. We ended that perfect day on the terrace of Le Select for champagne and foie gras – just because.

Some Final Words of Advice …. Tout doucement (easy does it )

As I mentioned earlier, it was really helpful to keep mom’s routine similar to the one she has back home in Vancouver and that included an afternoon nap. Our lunches in Paris almost always included wine – which slipped us easily into a decadent sieste before WhatsApping Mr. B to come pick us up for our afternoon and evening fun!

Something tells me, I will be back to Paris again for yet another “Farewell Tour” with maman . How wonderful that would be!

Truth be told, with all the lovely sites of Paris around us, the most beautiful part of this trip was just being together and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

P.S. Self-care. Please take time out for yourself when travelling. No matter how much fun you have, it’s important to re-charge your batteries. I booked my “Vivi time” when maman was resting or happily reading, painting or playing her violin at the hotel. I visited friends for coffee, worked a bit in a nearby café and even went for a massage. I’m sure maman enjoyed her “Thérèse” time without me, too!

The perks of traveling with Intrepid

A traveller dancing to a band playing local folk music in Bursa, Turkey

Authentic experiences with a local leader

It's all well and good sticking to the tourist trail, but anyone can Google that. We work exclusively with local leaders – because who better to show you the soul of a destination than someone who lives and breathes the culture? With insider knowledge of hidden hangouts, local legends and, most importantly, the dishes you won't find on the tourist menu, you'll go behind the scenes for a deeper, more culturally-rich experience.

A group of travellers making a toast at dinner in Menaggio, Italy

A small group of ready-made friends

Traveling solo is fun, but we think it's even better with a small group of like-minded travelers just as eager to explore as you are. Our trips are for people of all ages and from all walks of life, from the rookie backpacker straight out of uni to retirees on a mission to tick off everything on their bucket lists. The diversity keeps things interesting – not to mention the new perspectives to uncover, stories to share and friendships to forge.

A traditional tram travelling up a narrow street in Lisbon

Safety, logistics and convenience

Traveling to a new place is exciting, but it can also be daunting. There's an itinerary to plan, accommodation to book and logistics to navigate – not to mention language barriers and border crossings. We're sure you could handle any situation, but it's reassuring to rock up and know that everything's been taken care of. Your leader will also keep you clued up on cultural do's and don'ts and help you avoid tourist traps so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

A group of hikers walking down a grassy hill

Pick your own style of travel

Whether it's for finger-lickin' food, the freedom of the mountains or rare wildlife encounters, people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a  range of travel themes and styles . From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), there's something to suit every Intrepid traveler.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

“The tour went very well and according to plan. Our guide was very good and an amazing city driver. He flowed his car through the insane traffic at Arc de Triomphe without a scratch, steering masterfully and barely using the brakes! I would not have believed it possible! We saw all the sites on the list, with useful commentary by our guide. Our Boat tour was highly enjoyable as well! The staff knows how to make everyone happy, the food was very good and the scenery was quite interesting. Excellent value for money spent” – Claude Meares, Manual Wheelchair User.

Brilliant trip!.Because Intrepid do small groups we were able to get into the best locally run restaurants and really get to experience life like a local. We traveled by train and got to sit and chat with the locals (even picked up some top tips on where to go out) The tour leader was amazing, his knowledge of the 3 counties visited blew me away. He even booked us tickets to see Santana feat. Dave Matthews on the piano in a 2000yr old amphitheater in Nimes, something I would never had known about on my own. The tour was such a great mix of activities and free time. highly recommend.

This thril was fantastic, I would highly recommend it. Our skipper Noon was brilliant and made the trip so great. We had a great mix of people on our tour and it was a lot of fun. Noon cooked food for us and that was some of the best Italian food I have ever had. When we were at the harbours he took us to some fantastic restaurants and great little bars. The beaches and swimming spots each day were amazing, there was a lot of swimming and waking up anchored in quiet bays surrounded by islands was so nice. We went to Bonifacio and it was so beautiful there. We had some rough weather during our trip, but Noon chose spot to anchor or habours to stay at that were safe and out of the bad weather. My only slightly negative comments would be about the actual boat. One of the fridges didn’t work for the duration of the trip and the cabin area of the boat wasn’t overly clean when we boarded and wasn’t stocked with linen. Thankfully the next day we had linen supplies to us.

Great week sailing with a fantastic group of solo travellers! Nuncio looked after us all really well and involved us in decisions. A pretty relaxed pace but with opportunity to explore and sight see as well. Would definitely recommend!
Mimi was great. Only thing I would change is a better break about half way through. The older people were exhausted by the end.

Rural France | Small Group Tour for Seniors itinerary

Rural France Small Group Tour

Odyssey offers easy, convenient, and relaxed escorted small group tours across Western Europe and beyond. We explore France’s fairy-tale natural beauty, its ancient Roman, and Imperial heritage, its World Heritage Sites, and world famous cities, all with some truly spectacular scenery along the way. This and more is all waiting to be explored on one of Odyssey’s small group tours of France, designed for the senior traveller, and led by experienced, and enthusiastic like minded people.

On this small group Rural France programme, we spend 24 days exploring France beyond its bustling cities. During this tour you will explore the pastoral and provincial splendour of Rural France through French rural towns. France's rural villages and towns have resisted the dual siege of the automobile and the property developer. This decision has long protected the rural landscape, thus avoiding the incursions that laid waste to provincial centres in so many other European nations.

As you will see, many of France’s beautiful towns remain untouched by the depredations of the last century. Within their walls the villagers conduct their daily lives much as they have done since Napoleonic times. These villages, or communes, maintain lives based on villagers' needs, rather than for those who seek to profit from them.

We start and finish this vacation program in Paris and explore small towns in France. This small group tour of rural France is limited to a maximum of 18 people. Travellers are escorted by a Program Leader, who works with a number of local professional guides who will give information about the towns of France and take you to the best restaurants and shops to rest your feet.

On these guided tours, they share with you the culture and the history of rural France. Topics include the local taxation system, the European Union and its impact on rural village life and the regional centres, as well as commentary about the history of the pays, an area whose inhabitants, sharing common interests, enter into a planning contract to build a community. Pays can translate to "region", as in Pays de la Loire.

Rural France Small Group Tour Itinerary

After beginning the program in Paris, we travel to the picturesque village of St-Gervais-d'Auvergne. En route, we pause at the elegant city of Orléans, site of Joan of Arc's turning point victory over the English in the 100 Year War. We then travel to the spa resort of Vichy. Vichy was the seat of France's World War II collaborationist government and is also the source of the famous mineral water. We continue to St-Gervais-d'Auvergne and check into our hotel.

Set in the Puy-de-Dome region of the Auvergne in the southern-centre of France, St-Gervais-d'Auvergne is the region’s capital. From here we then visit Saint-Flour, perched on the Auvergne's highest volcanic outcrop, where we have a full day walking tour of the town. This is quintessential medieval France surrounded by the rugged beauty of the region's volcanic landscape.

Other Highlights of France

Other highlights include visiting Avignon. Avignon is a walled city which was once the seat of the Popes. We travel as well to Uzes and the Pont du Gard in Languedoc-Roussillon. We will also stop off at the great citadel of Carcassonne, one of Europe's largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses. We also take time to explore the pre-historic Caves of Lascaux II. The Camargue, separated from the rest of France by 140,000 hectares of wetlands, pastures, dunes, and salt flats, will also feature on our itinerary.

This guided educational small group tour of rural France is one of many journeys offered by Odyssey Traveller each year. These programs are typically for the senior or mature-aged couple or solo traveller seeking a cultural or historic tour into France. They primarily consist of images of gigantic prehistoric creatures known from fossil evidence to have once roamed Europe. Next we will continue on to explore the attractive village of St. Leon sur Vezere, then the caves of Le Roque St Christophe.

I loved the rural France trip. It exceeded my expectations for sure. I saw so much and learnt many new things about French history and culture. Every guide we had was knowledgeable, friendly and each brought their own personality to the role. I am sure that I will reflect on this trip as a particular highlight in my travel agenda. Congratulations to Rouna for making a difficult job seem easy!

Participant May 2014

Apart from meeting nice people, being well looked after and seeing wonderful places, one of the best aspects of Odyssey Tours is that we stay in one place for several days and do not have to pack and unpack very often.

These tours give the client a real learning experience, instead of going from market to market as some travel organizations do. Also, staying at least 3 nights or more in the one location one gets a feel for the area, and the memory of it is not ever forgotten.

The history of modern france: from the revolution to the war on terror.

Jonathan Fenby

With the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815, the next two centuries for France would be tumultuous. Bestselling historian and political commentator Jonathan Fenby provides an expert and riveting journey through this period as he recounts and analyses the extraordinary sequence of events of this period from the end of the First Revolution through two others, a return of Empire, three catastrophic wars with Germany, periods of stability and hope interspersed with years of uncertainty and high tensions. As her cross-Channel neighbour Great Britain would equally suffer, France was to undergo the wrenching loss of colonies in the post-Second World War as the new modern world we know today took shape. Her attempts to become the leader of the European union is a constant struggle, as was her lack of support for America in the two Gulf Wars of the past twenty years. Alongside this came huge social changes and cultural landmarks but also fundamental questioning of what this nation, which considers itself exceptional, really stood - and stands - for. That saga and those questions permeate the France of today, now with an implacable enemy to face in the form of Islamic extremism which so bloodily announced itself this year in Paris. Fenby will detail every event, every struggle and every outcome across this expanse of 200 years. It will prove to be the definitive guide to understanding France.

How the French Think: An Affectionate Portrait of an Intellectual People

Sudhir Hazareesingh

Sudhir Hazareesingh's How the French Think is a warm yet incisive exploration of the French intellectual tradition, and its exceptional place in a nation's identity and lifestyle

Why are the French an exceptional nation? Why do they think they are so exceptional? An important reason is that in France intellectual activity is regarded not just as the preserve of the thinking elite but for almost everyone. French thought can sometimes be austere and often opaque, yet it is undeniably bold and innovative, and driven by a relentless quest for the regeneration of humanity. Sudhir Hazareesingh traces its tumultuous history in an enormously enjoyable and highly original manner, showing how the French ways of thought and life connect. This will be one of the most revealing books written about them - or any other European country - for years.

Sudhir Hazareesingh was born in Mauritius. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and has been a Fellow and Tutor in Politics at Balliol College, Oxford, since 1990. Among his books are The Legend of Napoleon (Granta, 2004) and Le MytheGaullien (Gallimard, 2010). He won the Prix du Memorial d'Ajaccio and the Prix de la Fondation Napoleon for the first of these, and a Prix d'Histoire du Senat for the second.

The Discovery of France

Graham Robb

Ten years ago, I began to explore the country on which I was supposed to be an authority . . .

France is a country famous for its intellectuals, its philosophers and writers, its fashion, food and wine. And yet the notion of 'the French' as one nation is relatively recent and - historically speaking - quite misleading. In order to discover the 'real' past of France, Graham Robb realised it was not only necessary to go back in time, but also to go at a slower pace than modern life generally allows. The Discovery of France, illuminating, engrossing and full of surprises, is the result of Robb's 14,000 mile journey across France on a bicycle.

Winner of both the Duff Cooper and the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje prizes, The Discovery of France is a modern non-fiction classic, a literary exploration of a remarkable nation. From maps and migration to magic, language and landscape, it reveals a France few will recognize.

Napoleon the Great

Andrew Roberts

From Andrew Roberts, author of the Sunday Times bestseller The Storm of War, this is the definitive modern biography of Napoleon

It has become all too common for Napoleon Bonaparte's biographers to approach him as a figure to be reviled, bent on world domination, practically a proto-Hitler. Here, after years of study extending even to visits paid to St Helena and 53 of Napoleon's 56 battlefields, Andrew Roberts has created a true portrait of the mind, the life, and the military and above all political genius of a fundamentally constructive ruler. This is the Napoleon, Roberts reminds us, whose peacetime activity produced countless indispensable civic innovations - and whose Napoleonic Code provided the blueprint for civil law systems still in use around the world today.

It is one of the greatest lives in world history, which here has found its ideal biographer. The sheer enjoyment which this book will give anyone who loves history is enormous.

The French Revolution

Christopher Hibbert

Concise, convincing and exciting, this is Christopher Hibbert’s brilliant account of the events that shook eighteenth-century Europe to its foundation. With a mixture of lucid storytelling and fascinating detail, he charts the French Revolution from its beginnings at an impromptu meeting on an indoor tennis court at Versailles in 1789, right through to the ‘coup d’etat’ that brought Napoleon to power ten years later. In the process he explains the drama and complexities of this epoch-making era in the compelling and accessible manner he has made his trademark.

Writing in The Times, Richard Holmes described the book as ‘A spectacular replay of epic action …’ while The Good Book Guide called it, ‘Unquestionably the best popular history of the French Revolution’.

France: A History: from Gaul to de Gaulle

John Julius Norwich

I can still feel, as if it were yesterday, the excitement of my first Channel crossing (as a child of nearly 7) in September 1936; the regiment of porters, smelling asphyxiatingly of garlic in their blue-green blousons; the raucous sound all around me of spoken French; the immense fields of Normandy strangely devoid of hedges; then the Gare du Nord at twilight, the policemen with their képis and their little snow-white batons; and my first sight of the Eiffel Tower...This book is written in the belief that the average English-speaking man or woman has remarkably little knowledge of French history. We may know a bit about Napoleon or Joan of Arc or Louis XIV, but for most of us that's about it. In my own three schools we were taught only about the battles we won: Crécy and Poitiers, Agincourt and Waterloo. The rest was silence. So here is my attempt to fill in the blanks...

John Julius Norwich (at 88) has finally written the book he always wanted to write, the extremely colourful story of the country he loves best.

From frowning Roman generals and belligerent Gallic chieftains, to Charlemagne (hated by generations of French children taught that he invented schools) through Marie Antoinette and the storming of the Bastille to Vichy, the Resistance and beyond, FRANCE is packed with heroes and villains, adventures and battles, romance and revolution. Full of memorable stories and racy anecdotes, this is the perfect introduction to the country that has inspired the rest of the world to live, dress, eat -- and love better.

Becoming Bourgeois: Love, Kinship, and Power in Provincial France, 1670–1880

Christopher H Johnson

Becoming Bourgeois traces the fortunes of three French families in the municipality of Vannes, in Brittany—Galles, Jollivet, and Le Ridant—who rose to prominence in publishing, law, the military, public administration, and intellectual pursuits over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Revisiting complex issues of bourgeois class formation from the perspective of the interior lives of families, Christopher H. Johnson argues that the most durable and socially advantageous links forging bourgeois ascent were those of kinship. Economic success, though certainly derived from the virtues of hard work and intelligent management, was always underpinned by marriage strategies and the diligent intervention of influential family members.

Johnson's examination of hundreds of personal letters opens up a whole world: the vicissitudes of courtship; the centrality of marriage; the depths of conjugal love; the routines of pregnancy and the drama of childbirth; the practices of child rearing and education; the powerful place of siblings; the role of kin in advancing the next generation; tragedy and deaths; the enormous contributions of women in all aspects of becoming bourgeois; and the pleasures of gathering together in intimate soirées, grand balls, country houses, and civic and political organizations. Family love bound it all together, and this is ultimately what this book is about, as four generations of rather ordinary provincial people capture our hearts.
