After two years of dealing with Covid, international travel is returning to normal. To help welcome visitors back to the Land of Smiles, the Thai government lifted its final restrictions on July 1st, 2022.

From July 1st, the following changes have been implemented for all international travelers.

  • Foreigners do not need to show proof of Covid Insurance.
  • All mandatory hotel quarantine has been removed.
  • Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.
  • Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving.
  • Unvaccinated travelers (including children traveling with unvaccinated parents) will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) 72 hours before departing for Thailand. Proof does not need to be uploaded before traveling.

Passport Validity / Visas

The first thing to check before planning to travel to Thailand is the validity of your passport. International travel requires that your passport is not expiring within six months of your travel date. If you have less than six months left on your passport, you cannot enter Thailand.

If you are planning to travel in the future, check your passport early so you know if you need to apply for a new one or not. It is best to check with your local embassy about how long it will take to receive your new passport. As people look to travel again, passport departments are swamped with new applications and this is causing a backlog in many countries.

There are several visas available to foreigners who are planning to visit Thailand. The visa you need will depend on where you are from, your purpose of travel, and how long you intend to stay.

Visa Exemption

A foreign visitor may enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption Program . Nationalities under the Visa Exemption Program may enter Thailand without a visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

Upon arriving in Thailand, most nationalities who are part of the Visa Exemption Program may stay for up to 30 days. Certain nationalities can arrive as part of this program, but for a shorter time. It is best to check the country exemption list and confirm how long you can visit Thailand without needing to apply for a Visa.

Tourists arriving under visa exemption are eligible to extend their stay for up to a further 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. The cost to extend is approximately 2000 baht.

There is often confusion about Visa Exemption and “Visa on Arrival”. Visa on Arrival is a 15-day visa for travelers from India,  China, and 16 other countries. If you do not find your country on the Visa Exemption list, it is best to check the Visa on Arrival list.

There are some important things to note for Visa on Arrival:

  • A passport must be valid for at least 30 days.
  • The purpose of the visit is strictly tourist.
  • A visitor must show an address in Thailand where they will be staying.
  • A traveler must have a confirmed return flight.
  • Must show proof of funds to the value of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht for a family.
  • A fee of 2000 baht is paid on arrival. The fee must be paid in cash and in Thai baht.

Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)

Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, or the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which can be extended for 90 days twice at a local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to potentially stay in Thailand for 9 months. The Special Tourist Visa is currently scheduled to halt applications in September.

Contact your local Thai Embassy to verify what documents are needed to complete the process. When your visa is approved, the Embassy will place a sticker on your passport, so allow time for potential postage.

For those entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, they need to obtain a Thai visa from their local Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to coming to Thailand.

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may apply for a wide range of long-term non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for a long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized at a local Thai Embassy or Consulate. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to foreign visitors for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them.

The Thai Elite Visa allows foreign citizens to live in Thailand for 5, 10, or even 20 years. Thai Elite members do not need to worry about some of the eligibility criteria that are needed when applying for other long-term visas.

Proof of Vaccine or Testing

How a visitor enters Thailand will still depend on their vaccination status.

Vaccinated Travelers

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination to Thai authorities before arriving. A vaccinated traveler will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate either printed or on a digital device and be able to present it if asked.

Thailand does not require visitors to have had a third booster shot. 2 shots (1 shot for Jansen) is considered fully vaccinated and accepted.

Unvaccinated Travelers

Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR test or Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK) within 72 hours before boarding a flight in their departure country. They will need to have a copy of the test result and be able to present it if asked.

The RT-PCR and Pro-ATK test must be completed by a medical professional and a test report received. The home ATK (RAT) self-test is not acceptable for entering Thailand.

Vaccination and Testing for Children

The testing requirement for children under 18 depends on the vaccination status of their parents. Children traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before entering Thailand. Children traveling with unvaccinated parents will need to complete the same test as their parents within 72 hours of departing their home country.

It is important to note that many airlines are still asking for proof of vaccination or a Covid test before boarding flights. If you cannot produce one of these documents, you might not board the flight.

Though foreigners no longer need to provide evidence of testing or vaccination prior to arriving in Thailand, they are still required. Thai authorities are conducting random checks of international passengers and if a vaccination certificate or test result cannot be shown, a visitor will not be allowed to enter Thailand.

Insurance has become a dirty word during Covid. Seasoned travelers have always understood the importance of having comprehensive Travel Insurance when traveling abroad. Travel insurance protected travelers from unexpected incidents like:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Lost luggage

It was one of those things that people hoped they would never need but regretted not having when needed.

During the Pandemic, proof of insurance became mandatory when visiting countries like Thailand. Over time, people stopped referring to insurance as “Travel Insurance” and always referred to it as “Covid Insurance”. Because you had to have it, it was another hoop to jump through.

The good news is that you no longer need to provide proof of “Covid Insurance” to enter Thailand. But it is recommended because all the things listed above can still happen, and Covid has not disappeared completely.

Foreign visitors are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand if something should happen. Whether it be an accident or personal injury, if a visitor needs medical help, or has a canceled flight, they will need to cover any expenses themselves. Depending on the severity, this could be hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Buying good Travel Insurance shouldn’t break the bank. Protecting yourself is cheaper than medical bills, new flights, and replacing lost luggage.

You can buy Travel Insurance from many companies. But if you are looking for coverage that is designed for Thailand, is trusted by Thai authorities and medical institutions, and offers a helpline with people who speak the local language and know the country’s procedures, it is worth checking out AXA Thailand .

Their policies are well priced, straightforward, offer many benefits to its customers, and can be approved in minutes.

Hotel and Proof of Address Updates

Previously, a foreign visitor would complete an Arrival Card (TM6) before entering Thailand. This requirement has been temporarily removed as part of a new initiative by the Thai government.

A visitor no longer needs to provide proof of a hotel booking before departing their country, but will still need to provide an address when passing through Passport Control in Thailand. This address can be a hotel, home, or friend’s address.

This is especially true with people arriving on a pre-approved visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

From July 1, travelers are no longer required to book a SHA+ hotel and undergo an RT-PCR test on arrival. Most hotels have removed their SHA+ quarantine packages, but you will still see the SHA+ badge displayed on hotels.

It is recommended to browse hotels in Thailand on Agoda.com before arriving as it is easier to organize transport to your first night’s rest if pre-booked.

Thailand Pass

From July 1st, 2022, foreign travelers no longer need to apply for a Thailand Pass before entering Thailand. The system is still in place but is now a platform where visitors can notify the Thai authorities and medical facilities if they are diagnosed positive for Covid during their stay.

If you need to access the Thailand Pass system while in Thailand, please visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and register by filling in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.

International Arrivals

Travelers do not need to provide any proof of flights before leaving their home country.

There is a lot of discussion about whether a return flight needs to be booked when entering Thailand. Technically, all visitors should have a return flight booked. However, you will not always be asked to present evidence of a return flight.

If a visitor is entering Thailand with a pre-approved visa, or Visa on Arrival, they will often be asked to present details of their exit flight. Sometimes a visitor did not have a return flight and had to book a flight on the spot before being processed through Passport Control. To avoid this, it is best to book an exit flight that can be changed. You can always change your plans once in Thailand.

Domestic flights

There are no longer any restrictions on domestic flights and travel. When entering Thailand at an international terminal, a traveler is free to transit to a domestic flight right away. “Sealed” flights have been removed.

Domestic airlines will not always ask for proof, but it is best to have your vaccination certificate or Covid test result on hand in case you are asked to show it.

Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with a proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
  • These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
  • AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
  • AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.

Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

  • AstraZeneca or Covishield
  • Sinopharm or COVILO

How to Obtain Travel Insurance

Though COVID-19 insurance is no longer mandatory for entry to Thailand, it is recommended to have comprehensive Travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Good travel insurance covers not only medical expenses relating to Covid but also accident cover, personal damage, loss of possessions, and missed or delayed flights.

It is best to purchase insurance before you travel. The easiest way to buy your policy is online through a reputable insurance provider. The insurance company will provide you with the all-important certificate of cover that you can present to authorities or medical professionals if you need to make a claim.

You may also be asked to present this certificate to the airline before they will allow you to onboard. It’s quick and easy to do online. You can choose your length of policy from 7, 15, 30, 60 days, and 180 days. Just make sure that the policy covers your entire period of stay in Thailand as foreigners are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand and insurance companies will not cover claims for existing conditions.

You may purchase AXA COVID-19 travel insurance within a few minutes. Check them below.

Facts about thailand.

The tourism industry is a major industry in Thailand. The industry is promoted using the slogans “Amazing Thailand” and “Discover Thailand”. Foreigners in Thailand pick Bangkok as their go-to destination for its historical, natural, and cultural sites in its surroundings. The capital, Bangkok, also has beaches, islands, trekking destinations, minority ethnic groups, and forested mountains all of which combine to act as a magnet for tourists. Thailand is also known to have what is considered by many to be the largest market in the world, the Chatuchak Weekend Market. Foreigners in the country also enjoy taking courses ranging from Thai cooking to Buddhism and Thai massage. Other attractions in the country include archeological sites, museums, palaces, Buddhist temples, and several World Heritage sites.   The tourism industry has greatly impacted the Thai economy in recent times by contributing to the country’s GDP and the creation of a lot of jobs for locals. This has only been made possible by the influx of tourists in the country. It is expected that the outstanding performance of the tourism industry will continue for years to come.   Foreigners visiting Thailand with back-to-back visas are assumed to be doing illegal activities in Thailand and are likely to be questioned.   Citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and South Korea do not require a visa to visit Thailand for stays of no more than 90 days. Citizens of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States do not require a visa for stays up to 30 days.

Requirements for Entry:

  • Current immunization records, including evidence of yellow fever vaccination are required for entry into Cameroon.
  • World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination.
  • Proof of polio vaccination for visits longer than four weeks.

Visas: Obtain your visa before traveling. Visit the Embassy of Cameroon website for the most current visa information.

Dual Nationality: Cameroon does not recognize dual nationality. U.S. citizens should always present themselves as U.S. citizens to Cameroonian authorities, regardless of their country of birth. U.S. citizens must always enter and exit Cameroon on a U.S. passport with a valid Cameroonian visa otherwise they are liable to be denied entry or detained. Furthermore, presenting oneself as a Cameroonian citizen may impede our ability to provide consular services.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors or foreign residents of Cameroon.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction and customs regulations on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa are active in Far North, North, and Adamawa Regions of Cameroon. Suicide bombings have occurred in public places in and around urban areas resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. Terrorist attacks are most common outside major towns, especially in the regions bordering Nigeria and Chad . Extremists have frequently target areas of congregation, particularly camps for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). While most victims of terrorist attacks in Cameroon have been locals, violent extremist organizations may seek to target Westerners or conduct other high-profile operations. Kidnapping by terrorist organizations remains a concern. Refrain from traveling outside of cities or towns after dark and exercise caution when in the vicinity of potential targets.

There is ongoing violence in Northwest and Southwest Cameroon. Security force operations and attacks by armed militants regularly take place throughout these Regions including in major cities. Neighboring areas of other regions are at risk of spillover violence, including Douala. Use of improvised explosives and incendiary devices, kidnappings, illegitimate detentions, and acts of violent criminality by armed actors have also occurred in Northwest and Southwest Cameroon. Security forces, government officials, road travelers, administrative buildings, schools, and commercial areas have been repeatedly attacked. Those suspected of being associated, even tangentially, with the central government or armed militants have been targeted for reprisals by a variety of elements.

Border Areas : Cameroon’s borders remain porous. Terrorists regularly cross the border into Cameroon from Nigeria and Chad to conduct attacks in the Far North, North, and Adamawa Regions. Militant activities and security operations routinely occur along Cameroon’s shared border with Nigeria in the Northwest and Southwest Regions. Armed criminals and communal militia frequently conduct attacks in border areas abutting the Central African Republic (CAR).

Embassy personnel are restricted from traveling to the Northwest, Southwest, North, and Far North Regions of Cameroon, as well as within 20 kilometers of the border with the Central African Republic in Adamawa and East Regions, and within 20 kilometers of the border with Nigeria and north of Ngaoudere in the Adamawa Region.

Bakassi Peninsula: Cameroon's military authorities restrict access to the Bakassi Peninsula. U.S. citizens should avoid this area.

Use of Improvised Explosive Devices : Multiple improvised explosive device (IED) attacks have occurred in Douala and Yaoundé since June 2020. The threat for similar attacks could take place countrywide. Various armed actors, to include terrorists and political militants, may use such devices. To date, recent IED incidents have not directly targeted U.S. citizens or areas frequented by Westerners, however the risk of wrong place/wrong time violence remains. Locations with a high security force or government presence may be at increased risk of being targeted.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime:  Violent and opportunistic crime is prevalent throughout the country including major cities. Foreigners in Cameroon have been victims of all types of crime including murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, carjacking, burglary, theft, armed robbery, and home invasion. Criminals often employ violence, particularly in instances where victims attempt to resist. The risk of street and residential crime is especially high, even in affluent areas with a large police and private security presence.

Transport Crimes: U.S. Embassy personnel are prohibited from using taxis. Violent assaults on taxi passengers are common. Petty theft is prevalent, particularly on trains, buses, and taxis.

The Hilton and Mont Febe hotels offer a shuttle service from Yaoundé-Nsimalen Airport to downtown Yaoundé. Travelers are encouraged to use this service or retain the services of a reputable private transport company.

  • Avoid walking alone especially after dark.
  • Do not display cash and valuables.
  • Drive with doors locked and windows closed.
  • Always carry a copy of your U.S. passport and visa (if applicable). Keep original documents in a secure location.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Maritime Security : Piracy and armed robbery continue to increase throughout the Gulf of Guinea including Cameroon’s waters. Pirates and armed groups operating in the region typically carry out attacks on vessels using automatic weapons. Attacks, kidnappings for ransom, and robbery of crew, passengers, and ship’s property are common and may occur near coastal areas or deep waters. More information on current conditions may be found on the Office of Naval Intelligence’s piracy page.

Communications: During periods of heightened unrest or insecurity, there is a heightened risk of communications disruptions which may affect internet access, social media, mobile messaging, and cellular voice calls. These disruptions may be localized or countrywide.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

  • Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Cameroon. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:
  • Romance/online dating
  • Financial transactions/money transfers
  • Too good to be true purchases or sales
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers

U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by calling 117 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (237) 22220-1500. Dial + (237) 22222-2525 in Yaoundé or dial 112 in major cities to contact ambulance services. If you have been a victim of sexual assault or rape, consider contacting a medical provider for HIV post-exposure prophylaxis.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Victims of Crime: Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in Douala and Yaoundé. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of these two cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

You may be taken in for questioning by the police if unable to produce an acceptable form of identification, travel permit, or Cameroonian driver’s license.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Photography: It is illegal to take pictures of government buildings, military installations, and other public facilities, many of which are unmarked. You could be fined, have your photographic equipment confiscated, or be detained or arrested. Do not take photos of people without their permission.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately.  See our webpage for further information.

Phone Service: Cellular phones are the norm, as other telephone service is unreliable and landlines are nearly non-existent. It may be possible to purchase a SIM card locally and use a U.S.-compatible cell phone. You will need to show your passport.

Currency: The Central African franc (XAF) is the official currency of Cameroon, but U.S. dollars and Euros are accepted in urban areas. Cameroon is primarily a cash economy. Due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity, avoid using credit cards and be cautious when using ATMs. Exchange currency only at reputable banks. Money transfer services are found throughout the country.

Customs: Strict import and export regulations, particularly with regard to pharmaceuticals and wood products, are enforced. It is illegal to buy, sell, kill, or capture any protected wild animal or trade its parts without a license, including ivory. Cameroon is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. You will be prosecuted and could receive a prison sentence or a fine if you buy or traffic in these goods.

Wild Animal Parks: Heed all instructions given by guides or trackers. Use common sense and maintain a safe distance around wildlife. Even in the most serene settings, wild animals pose a lethal threat. There have been reports of armed poachers attacking tourists.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the following webpages for details:

LGBTI Travelers: Consensual same-sex sexual activity is illegal and punishable by a prison sentence of six months to five years and a fine ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 CFA francs ($35-$353). LGBTI individuals face social stigmatization, harassment, and discrimination. Police and civilians may extort money from presumed LGBTI individuals with the threat of exposure or arrest. Suspected members of the LGBTI community have received anonymous threats by phone, text, and email.

For emergency services in Cameroon, dial the number of the hospital in the area where you are located. There is currently no national number for general health-related emergencies in the country.

Ambulance services are:

  • Not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • Not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except Yaoundé and Douala.
  • Not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • Not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.  Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:   Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of Cameroon to ensure the medication is legal in Cameroon.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals available on this page under "local resources." We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Health care in many areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Public medical clinics may lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors may require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available. Most hospitals and medical professionals require cash payment.
  • Medical staff may communicate primarily in French and speak little or no English.
  • Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Consider hiring a private nurse if the hospital is amenable or having family spend the night with the patient, especially a minor child.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Cameroon.
  • Although Cameroon has elective/cosmetic surgery facilities, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Cameroon, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available, and professionals are accredited and qualified.
  • Persons traveling to Cameroon for medical purposes require the proper “medical” visa. Check the Government of Cameroon’s website for more information.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.
  • Cameroon may not allow the importation of some medication. Travelers should avoid carrying any prohibited medication. Please review Cameroon rules on medication or contact the Ministry of Health's Directorate of Pharmacies and Medications .

Non-Traditional Medicine

  • U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died while seeking medical care from non-traditional “healers” and practitioners overseas. Ensure you have access to licensed emergency medical facilities in such cases.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Cameroon to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • If you decide to pursue parenthood in Cameroon via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Water Quality

  • The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure include:
  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

General Health Language

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Schistosomiasis
  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Diarrheal Illness
  • Use the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended mosquito repellents and sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers even for short stays.
  • Yellow Fever: Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry and exit. The vaccine date on the yellow vaccination record card must be at least 10 days old before arrival in the country. Passengers without proof of Yellow Fever vaccination will be administered the vaccine upon arrival at the airport, at their own expense.
  • There may be shortages of specific medicine and medical supplies in Cameroon.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Resources for Travelers regarding specific issues in Cameroon.

Air Quality

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Cameroon's roads networks are poorly maintained and not well lit. During the rainy season from April to November, many roads are not passable even with four-wheel-drive vehicles. Traffic safety is hazardous due to lack of traffic signs, poorly trained/disciplined drivers, inadequately maintained vehicles, and indifference among many drivers toward the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Other driving risks include excessive speed, erratic driving habits, lack of vehicle maintenance, and pedestrians, wildlife, and livestock.

Outside of major cities, travel with extra fuel, food, and water, as well as a reliable means of communication, such as a satellite phone or radio, as mobile phone coverage is limited. Professional roadside assistance service is not available.

Roadblocks:  Security forces stop motorists on the pretext of minor or non-existent violations to conduct vehicle searches and check passengers for identity papers. They may also extort bribes. We advise travelers not to pay bribes, and to ask the police officer to provide a citation to be paid at the local court.

To protect yourself:

  • Drive with doors locked and windows closed at all times.
  • Do not permit soldiers or police officers to enter your vehicle, and do not get into the vehicle of anyone purporting to be a security official.
  • If stopped, remain inside your vehicle with doors locked and open the window slightly to communicate.
  • Carry your passport and other identity documents with you while traveling to show security or police officials.
  • Remain courteous and calm; if threatened, do not resist.
  • Report any incident to the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé.

Traffic Laws:   Cameroonian law does not require an international driver’s license. A valid driver’s license from any U.S. state or territory is valid to drive in Cameroon for stays of less than three months.

Accidents:  Accidental injury due to hazardous road conditions is a major threat to health and safety.   In the event of an automobile accident, remain inside the vehicle and wait for police. Although it is illegal to move your vehicle before the police arrive, if a hostile mob forms or you feel your safety is in danger, leave the scene and proceed directly to the nearest police station to report the incident. Do not stop at the scene of an accident or at intersections where people have gathered, as mobs can develop quickly.

Public Transportation: Avoid all travel by public transportation and hire private transport from a reliable source. Any form of public transportation is unregulated, unreliable, and generally unsafe. Mini-buses, buses, trains, and ferries are in poor mechanical condition and are often filled well beyond their intended capacity. Make sure any car you hire is adequately insured, preferably by written confirmation from the insurance company (rather than the car hire firm). Cameroon Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know

cameroon travel to thailand

Cameroon, often referred to as “Africa in Miniature,” is a diverse and enchanting destination for travelers seeking a wide range of experiences. Nestled in Central Africa, this country offers a captivating mix of landscapes, cultures, and wildlife. From the lush rainforests and majestic mountains to the vibrant cities and serene coastal areas, Cameroon beckons with its natural beauty, rich traditions, and warm hospitality. Discover its unique blend of French and English influences, embark on wildlife safaris, and immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythms of its music and dance. Cameroon is an alluring tapestry of adventures waiting to be explored.

What’s the Best Time to Visit? 📅

The best time to visit Cameroon as a tourist largely depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to undertake, as the country experiences diverse climates and weather patterns. Cameroon can be visited year-round, but here are some considerations for each season:

  • Dry Season (November to February): This is generally considered the best time to visit Cameroon. During the dry season, the weather is more pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall. It’s an ideal time for wildlife safaris, hiking, and outdoor activities. The visibility for trekking on Mount Cameroon is also best during this period.
  • Rainy Season (March to October): Cameroon’s rainy season brings heavy rainfall, especially in coastal and central regions. While the lush landscapes are at their most vibrant during this time, travel can be more challenging due to road conditions, flooding, and increased humidity. However, the rainforest is teeming with life, making it a great time for birdwatching and lush green scenery.
  • Harmattan Season (December to February): The harmattan is a dry and dusty wind that blows from the Sahara Desert. It affects northern and central Cameroon, leading to hazy conditions and lower visibility. However, it can create unique and atmospheric landscapes.
  • Northern Regions: In the northern regions of Cameroon, the climate is more arid, and the best time to visit is during the cooler, dry season from November to February. This is also when festivals and cultural events take place in some northern towns.
  • Coastal Areas: Coastal regions, such as Douala and Limbe, experience a humid and tropical climate year-round. The dry season is more popular for beach vacations, while the rainy season can bring heavy downpours.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Cameroon depends on your interests and the regions you plan to explore. If you prefer comfortable weather and ease of travel, the dry season is recommended. However, if you’re interested in unique rainforest experiences and cultural events, you might consider visiting during the rainy season, keeping in mind the weather-related challenges.

Always check the current weather conditions and any travel advisories before planning your trip, as conditions can vary from year to year. Additionally, be aware that Cameroon has a diverse range of microclimates due to its geographical features, so conditions can vary by region.

What’s the Best Way to Get Around? 🚌

Getting around Cameroon as a tourist can be an adventure in itself, as the country has diverse landscapes and transportation options. Here are some of the best ways to get around Cameroon:

  • Domestic Flights: For covering long distances quickly, domestic flights are a convenient option. Major cities like Douala, Yaoundé, and Garoua have airports with regular domestic flights. Some remote areas may also have airstrips.
  • Buses: Buses are a common mode of transportation for both short and long journeys. There are various types of buses, including intercity coaches, minivans, and shared taxis (known as “bush taxis”). While the quality of buses can vary, they are an economical way to travel between cities and towns.
  • Trains: Cameroon has a railway network that connects major cities like Douala, Yaoundé, and Bafoussam. Traveling by train is a scenic and comfortable option, especially for longer journeys.
  • Car Rentals: Renting a car is an excellent choice for travelers who want flexibility and wish to explore remote areas. However, road conditions can vary, and driving in Cameroon may require familiarity with local traffic rules.
  • Motorcycle Taxis: In many urban and rural areas, motorcycle taxis, known as “okadas,” are a common and convenient mode of transportation. Negotiate the fare before the ride and wear a helmet for safety.
  • Shared Taxis: Shared taxis, or “bush taxis,” are a popular way to get around within cities and towns. They are often used for short distances and are shared among passengers.
  • Camionettes: These shared minivans operate on fixed routes within cities and towns and are a cost-effective way to travel short distances.
  • Ferries and Boats: In coastal regions and around islands, ferries and boats are used for transportation. They can be an enjoyable way to explore coastal areas and river regions.
  • Walking: In cities and towns, walking is a convenient way to explore local neighborhoods and markets. Be cautious of traffic and pedestrian safety.
  • Domestic Tour Operators: For guided tours to national parks and remote areas, consider booking through reputable domestic tour operators. They can provide transportation, guides, and local insights.

Keep in mind that road conditions can vary greatly, especially in rural areas, and travel times may be longer than expected. It’s essential to plan your routes and transportation in advance, especially if you have a tight schedule. Also, be prepared for occasional delays and changes in plans, and carry essential items like water, snacks, and cash, as access to services may be limited in some regions.

UNESCO recognizes more than just historical sites—here are 5 protected health customs

An Indonesian elixir is the latest ancient wellness tradition to be acknowledged for its distinct contribution to heritage.

A woman kneeling in front of a stone bowl with rice and a mat of other ingredients such as tumeric and other spices, next to a glass drinking bottle with an orange drink inside.

UNESCO famously protects crucial architecture, nature, and artforms around the world, but lesser known is that it also recognizes historic health practices. Indonesia’s jamu —a medicinal drink—is the latest wellness custom to be named to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list , which safeguards distinctive rituals, festivals, languages, and music.

From Indonesia to Finland, here are five places where travelers can find UNESCO-listed experiences that combine tradition and health.

Jamu in Indonesia

Carved into Indonesia’s biggest temple are 1,200-year-old stone images of an elixir now popular with tourists. The bas reliefs at the Borobudur temple compound   on the island of Java depict jamu—a blend of ingredients that can include ginger, lime, turmeric, and tamarind—being offered to a sick man to promote healing.

On the island of Bali, many cafés and street stalls sell jamu , which aims to treat illness by balancing the body’s temperature. Cold jamu is offered to people with a fever, while heated versions help patients suffering chills. It is drunk by Indonesians of all ages, and primarily made by women, many of whom use herbs and spices they cultivate themselves.

Jamu recipes vary by Indonesian region, and its makers often customize each dose to the age and health of its drinker. Some blend it only for friends and relatives. Others sell the beverage at shops and markets, or run jamu classes for tourists. AYANA Bali Resort offers two-hour workshops , led by veteran jamu makers, during which participants learn the history of this custom, pick herbal ingredients at an on-site farm, and then boil an organic remedy.

Yoga in India

Whether on Himalayan mountainsides, palm-spiked beaches, or temple floors, tourists to India have long twisted their bodies in pursuit of enlightenment, physical recovery, emotional repair, or other personal intentions. Each is lured by the 5,000-year-old promise of yoga .

Founded in northern India , yoga is at once physical, spiritual, and philosophical. Practitioners engage in a sequence of bodily poses, which can range from simple to challenging. They may simultaneously meditate, chant, or practice breath control, in an effort to achieve mental tranquility.

UNESCO cited yoga for being practiced in India “by the young and old without discriminating against gender, class, or religion.” Tourists to India, meanwhile, can delve as deeply as they wish into this custom, from singular classes at five-star resorts, like Shimla’s Wildflower Hall , to immersive retreats at Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre in Dharamkot. Many foreigners also earn yoga instructor certification, at schools such as the hundred-year-old Kaivalyadhama , near Mumbai.

Massage in Thailand

Thailand’s tourist districts are so laden with massage parlors that foreigners might perceive this physical therapy as solely a money-making venture. In fact, Nuad Thai massage is a 2,500-year-old pillar of this nation’s culture , practiced in many homes and proudly viewed as a fusion of art and science.

Nuad Thai masseurs use their hands, feet, knees, and elbows to skillfully knead, bend, stretch, and squeeze patients. Their aim is to treat health conditions by unblocking the body’s 72,000 sen, or energy pathways. In Thai Buddhist belief, clearing these routes restores harmony between a person’s internal elements of water, air, fire, and earth.

Travelers can have their bodies manipulated at hundreds of Nuad Thai parlors from Phuket to Chiang Mai. Or they can learn this skill by attending facilities like Bangkok’s Nuad Thai Massage School .

Acupuncture in China

The practice of deliberately pricking human skin began in China almost 5,000 years ago, rooted in Chinese philosophy. Acupuncture , as it’s now known, is a method for balancing energies within the human body, specifically the dark force of yin and the light of yang.

Similar to Nuad Thai, acupuncture seeks to improve mental and physical health by clearing blockages in the life force. This energy, known as qi, supposedly courses along 12 paths within us, each linked to a key organ or bodily function. Acupuncturists typically insert five to 20 small needles into strategic points on their patient’s skin. In doing so, they treat everything from migraines to nausea, muscle pain, respiratory disorders, and menstrual cramps.

Some studies have also shown acupuncture can release endorphins , the “feel-good hormones.” Tourists to China can try acupuncture in Shanghai at the two branches of Body & Soul Medical Clinic .

Sauna in Finland

Even 10,000 years after embracing the sauna , Finland remains infatuated with it. Remarkably, there’s about 3.3 million of these steam-filled spaces in this Scandinavian nation of only 5.5 million people. To Finnish people, 90 percent of whom use a sauna at least once a week, this sweaty activity doesn’t just purge toxins and stress.

It can also be a social outing and a chance to commune with nature. Families and friends often meet for a conversation-rich session at a sauna, some of which are set in picturesque locations—perched by a lake, amid forest, or on a mountainside.

Tourists can experience this Finnish custom at places including Löyly in Helsinki, Arctic Sauna World in the Sápmi (Lapland) region, and Hawk Nest Sauna in Nuuksio National Park.
