About Styx: A new era of hope, survival, and prosperity comes calling with the release of  CRASH OF THE CROWN , Styx’s new “masterpiece” studio album, which was written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The multi-Platinum rockers–James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals)–released their 17 th  album June 18, 2021 on the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe, which is available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD on  digital platforms . They released more new music on September 17, 2021,  THE SAME STARDUST  EP, originally sold as part of Record Store Day (June 12, 2021). Available on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, featuring two brand-new songs on side one (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on side two of some of Styx’s classic hits previously heard during their “Styx Fix” livestreams that have been keeping fans company during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence,” and “Renegade.” It’s available worldwide on all  digital platforms .

About Nancy Wilson: Nancy Wilson is celebrated as a seminal musician in rock ‘n’ roll history. A guitar virtuoso from the age of 9, Nancy (and her sister Ann) lead the multi-platinum rock group, Heart, who have sold upwards of 35 million albums. Nancy is revered as an ingenious guitar player, and as a gifted lead vocalist. In fact, that’s Nancy singing on Heart’s first Number One hit, “These Dreams.” As a songwriter, Nancy has co-written a collection of indelible songs that have earned their way into the classic rock canon (“Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” “Straight On”). During an era when females where scarce in rock ‘n’ roll, Nancy helped carve out a place for women to front rock bands and dominate on stage. Her icon status was cemented when Heart was inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012.

In addition to her storied rock career, Nancy has also built a successful career as a film composer, including lauded scores for a number of Cameron Crowe films such as Say Anything, Jerry Maquire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown. In 2020, Nancy turned her attention to recording her first solo album. Released on Carry On Music in May 2021,  YOU AND ME  sees Nancy plaing guitar and singing on all the tracks, including 9 new, original songs, and a stunning cover version of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising.”

Styx is an American rock band from Chicago, USA. Their peak of fame was during the mid-70s till the early 80s.

Styx is known for their unusual musical style: they meld pop rock with the extreme power of hard-rock guitar and elements of musical theatre. Their style of rock has been described as anything from progressive to soft rock.

The current line-up of the band consists of Chuck Panozzo, James "J.Y." Young, Tommy Shaw, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Ricky Phillips. The band was started by Chuck Panozzo and his twin brother, John, in 1961 whilst the brothers were still in adolescence. The original name of the band was ‘The Tradewinds.’ In 1972 the band signed with Wooden nickel Records and became Styx, producing their first, self-entitled, album which was followed by many more.

The band’s big breakthrough in to the mainstream market, however, did not come until the release of their seventh album, ‘The Grand Illusion’ on 7 July 1977. It reached triple platinum certification. The band then went on to achieve great success from the late 70s and moving on to the 80s.

Following their sudden success, the band suffered a number of splits and reformations, especially throughout the 90s. Various band members were lost and subsequently replaced throughout this period.

To date, Styx are best known for their hit rock songs "Lady" "Come Sail Away" "Babe" , "The Best of Times" , "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Mr. Roboto", amongst many others.

Live reviews

We experienced the guys in Murphys, California on a near full moon. This is the eleventh time for me in nearly forty years and the fifth time with this lineup. Though there are songs and moments we all expect in a Styx show, there were also some nice surprises and successful road-testing of their more recent material this evening.

As always, they put on a spirited, highly professional show. The sound mix was clear and plenty loud, though a little too muddy in the bottom end for me - this might have been an issue with the house sound.

Singer-keyboardist Lawrence Gowan has emerged as the showman of the group, with Tommy Shaw is a steady yet passionate frontman. Gowan spun his keyboard, pranced about when not providing keyboard support and stood on his stool with his other foot planted on the keyboard for "Come Sail Away". The rhythm section of Ricky Phillips on bass and Todd Sucherman on drums was steady and unassailably in the pocket with the rest of the band. Their vocal harmonies and arrangements were spot-on. Founding member Chuck Panozzo took the stage for a short duet with Gowan on the brand-new "Lost at Sea". Chuck remained on stage for the later classics, including Renegade and Mr. Roboto. Most of the songs we all know rocked: The Grand Illusion, Lady, Fooling Yourself and Blue Collar Man.

They opened with the first song on their new album, "The Fight of Our Lives" and soared later in the set with "Sound The Alarm". The uplift it provided was only boosted by the rest of the songs. Also onstage with an electric guitar was Will Evankovich, who co-wrote a lot of the material from 2017's The Mission and this year's Crash of the Crown. He was curiously underused here, as the group did not play any songs that would have benefited from another set of strings. "The Red Storm", "Our Wonderful Lives" or even "Boat on a River" come to mind.

Which leads to my only quibble: The set was way too short. REO Speedwagon, the opener, played for at least ninety minutes; Styx performed for a little over an hour. They have such a great body of work and energy to spare - why didn't they play a few more songs tonight?

Styx are not only know as legendary recording artists, but as legendary rock performers. With such a prolific career it would be easy to see how they could slip over the years. However, I was able to see them recently and I can assure you, they have lost nothing.

I went to the concert a bit skeptical. Could the Styx I love still bring the rock? As I stood waiting for the show to start I noticed the crowd was a lot of young kids and older adults. It’s impressive that a band like Styx can bring together multiple generations. Everybody seemed real fans of the band. No one just standing around with there arms crossed like you see at a lot of concerts.

The second the band took the stage everyone took to their feet. The band didn’t wait a moment to engage us. With a “Are you ready to rock?” they jumped right into “Blue Collar Man”, one of my favorites. From then on the show was an hour straight of all the songs you remembered and some you had even forgot you knew. There was really something for everyone. The concert ended with an energy-overloaded performance of “Come Sail Away” followed by the radio favorite “Mr. Roboto”. Even after the show stopped and the lights came up, everyone was still talking about the set list. While it may sound crazy, seeing Styx live should be something everyone does before they die.

What an amazing show! The opening act for United We Rock was Don Felder and wow! He sounded great and he played all of the Eagles massive hits.

Then Styx came out and the crowd went nuts! They started off with their new hit song "Gone, Gone, Gone" and their set just kept getting better as they went on! I've seen several Styx shows and each time I cant imagine they getting better, but they do! Tommy Shaw apologized that he had had a cold, but honestly, you couldn't prove it by me. His voice was just as strong and true as ever! The applause was thunderous when they ended and they came out for an encore of the best version I've ever heard of "Paradise Theater"and their signature end of show "Renegade".

The last was REO Speedwagon. They were wonderful as well. I am a massive Styx fan so I didn't know as many of REO's songs I did enjoy it very much.

The only thing I would have changed was that Styx would have been the headliner. People seemed to be leaving a third of the way through REO's set. Of course it could have been that the concert was on a Tuesday night and I'm sure not everyone was able to take the next day off and it did take almost 30 minutes to get out of the parking lot.

All in all this was an epic show and I will certainly attend more Styx shows!

Followed the boys for 3 shows. Catoosa, Enid, and Durant. Each show was better than the one before. Styx still rocks the house better than anyone. Tommy Shaw still has a awesome voice, JY makes the guitar sound better than ever, Lawrence Gowen is a awesome keyboardist, Ricky's bass playing kicks you in gear, Todd Sucherman is one of the most fantastic drummers I've ever had the pleasure to watch, and it was great to see Chuck still out there laying it down. I cannot express how awesome these guys are! It's also refreshing to them still having fun after all these years. Catch them if you get a chance, you will not be disappointed.

The concert was wonderful! They each still have the talent of their youth. The vocals and guitar were still very impressive. I became a fan later in their career, so they played a lot of music I didn't know, but I enjoyed it all. They have so much good music to pick from, they didn't play all of my favorites. I missed "Babe" and "Best of Times" in particular, but I would have also loved to hear "Don't Let It End" and "Mr. Roboto," which I didn't expect them to play anyway. They had some showmanship as well, so I can easily recommend seeing their show.

As always Styx was phenomenal. Celebrity theater doesn’t have a bad seat in the house. They haven’t lost a step. They still sound like they did in the seventies. Great stage show and fan friendly. They reach out to the crowd and fist bump high five. Each song takes you back when rock was rock. Phoenix loves Styx so much they sell out back to back shows every time. Going to the second show tonight. If you get a chance to see them don’t miss it. They are the best.

My husband, our friends and family, as well as myself, ALL LOVED Styx!! We just recently saw them last year on A Carnival Cruise, as well! They are great. My only complaint is that we were unable to see them due to the venue, Sleeptrain Ampitheater being a VERY Large Ampitheater and there was nothing of them put up on the Jumbotrons for the people out on the grass or in the top back seats. That was a bummer. Other than that, they sounded amazing!!

First time seeing the legendary Styx. I have always enjoyed their mysic in the past, but would not have considered myself a huge fan. The times, they have changed.

Musically, better than listening to anything that had been recorded. Showmanship was better than most young bands out now.

Styx has gained my greater appreciation of their music & their live show. I will definitely pay to see them everytime they come through the NW.

This was the second time that I have seen STYX, and it was great again!! They are incredible musicians and wonderful singers. However, if you are hoping to hear some of their pop hits (Babe and Mr. Roboto for example), you will not hear them. The older rock hits are showstoppers and they rocked them hard!! If you are a fan of the rock hits, you will love the concert. I did!!!

Styx was awesome! Like they always are. However, the sound was inconsistent as far as volume. I know it was windy but there was something else going on.

Again Styx was great. I last saw them about 16 years ago. The are so consistent, they play the songs from 40 years ago like they just wrote them! Highly recommend seeing Styx.

About Nancy Wilson:

Nancy Wilson – Image courtesy of Jeremy Danger.

Nancy Wilson is celebrated as a seminal musician in rock ‘n’ roll history.

A NOSTALGIC TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE AS STYX BRING THEIR “LIVE AND UNZOOMED” TOUR TO TORONTO, CANADA

styx canadian tour dates

Toronto, Canada – Ahhhhhh…. The 1970s and 1980s!!!! I challenge you to convince me that any other 2 decade span was better. Since this is a concert review, let me focus on the music. I’m sure there is some real fondness to the 1960s, but the classic rock of the 70s is hands down some of the greatest music of all time. Roll it all over into the 80s, witness the emergence of Heavy Metal, Punk and Hip Hop, and you’ve got a veritable “Big Bang” of ear candy.

Time travel is real folks! On August 16, 2022, during the dog days of a Toronto summer, I travelled back in time some 40 or 50 years. The night was hot and humid. The purpose of the trip was to see a group that arose from this insane era of music in 1972, out of Chicago, Illinois. With 17 studio albums under their belt, Styx took their “Live and UnZoomed” tour into Toronto’s Budweiser Stage . Clearly, an “F-YOU” to the past 2 plus years of lock downs and forced online entertainment.

Opening their set with “The Fight of Our Lives”, the lead track from their most recent album Crash of the Crown , the band greeted a packed house. In fact, there was even an extra row of seats at the front of the venue which resulted in a photo pit that was vastly narrower than what I’ve been used to at this Amphitheatre. There was very little room for us photographers to maneuver around, but it’s a great idea to help get some fans a little closer to their idols.

With Lead Singer and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan being a Canadian himself (us Canadians are a proud bunch), the evening brought a few Canadian references from the band. Namely about the venue itself. Back in the 1980s, Budweiser Stage was known as the Ontario Place Forum. When the Styx frontman mentioned this, it brought some additional memories to an already nostalgic evening.

In case we needed some additional Canadian references, the 6th track in the set was introduced by guitarist James “JY” Young. He explained that some things that were once illegal, are now decriminalized (but of course here, totally legal), so “Light Up”, a song from their 1975 release Equinox !

Lead Vocalist/Keyboardist Lawrence Gowan introduced the band with a little story for each: The man who gives his heart and soul, Lead Vocals/Guitar – Tommy Shaw The newest member of the band, who has played with bands like The Guess Who, Night Ranger and Ted Nugent, Guitarist – Willie Evankovich Playing with bands such as The Babys, Bad English and Coverdale-Page, Bassist – Ricky Phillips Modern Drummers Reader Poll winner on Drums – Todd Sucherman Band member for 50 years, Guitarist – James “JY” Young

In addition to the lineup, a special guest was on hand ahead of Styx’s 9th track, “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)”. Tommy Shaw shared a bit of history, explaining that a set of fraternal twins in the south side of Chicago started playing drums and bass guitar in their basement. Soon, word started getting around town, and eventually, the band Styx was born. The guest musician was none other than one of the founding members, bass guitarist Chuck Panozzo. Chuck joined the fray with his bass guitar during the track.

In 1985, a Canadian artist by the name of Gowan hit it big in this country with his breakthrough hit “A Criminal Mind”. Considering the location on this night, Gowan performed his hit song in front of his hometown faithful. It may not seem like a very big deal, but I thought it was cool of the band to allow their Lead Singer/Keyboardist to play his solo track, despite Gowan being with the band for 20 years now.

I have a pet peeve that I’ve mentioned in other show reviews, and that is a crowd that sits through the whole show. The band was spot on this night, but it took the fans a little while to match the energy. After our 3-song photo pit excursion, I headed to my seat to take in the rest of the show. Other than a smattering of fans who were standing here and there, everybody was in their seats. One lady close by was trying to urge people to GET UP and dance. Unfortunately, she did not have much luck. I get it, it’s an older crowd, and aches and pains start to take their toll, but come on people!! Give a little here! To be fair, it’s not like it was a dead crowd. They were singing and clapping, but I can tell you, the band wants you on your feet dancing!

Fortunately, as the show progressed, more and more people started standing. By the time Styx introduced their 11th track of the evening “Too Much Time on My Hands”, a song that Tommy Shaw noted was played in the first hour of MTV’s launch, the crowd was all up on their feet. They were dancing in their seats, and they were dancing in the aisles. And boy were they singing! During the absolute classic “Come Sail Away”, the crowd was singing at the top of their lungs!

With super cool spinning keyboard platforms for lead singer Lawrence Gowan (or, as we Canadians fondly know him, Gowan), guitarists climbing atop platforms behind drummer Todd Sucherman, and rainbow-colored jackets, Styx has a great stage presence. These guys were really fun to watch.

Earlier I mentioned that I traveled back in time. Not because the band only played their music from the 1970s and 80s, but because they sounded as though they may be 40 or 50 years younger than they are. It’s unusual for a band to be together for 50 years and still tour. What’s even rarer is for these bands to sound as good as Styx did on this night … and quite frankly, these guys looked fantastic too. Unfortunately, as we age, things just aren’t as they were even one decade prior. With musicians from this period, it’s honestly a crap shoot. You just don’t know what you are going to get at a live concert. I’ve seen some shows that made me feel a sense of empathy for the musicians, but not Styx. They definitely brought the goods! But don’t take my word for it! Digital Beat Mag’s very own Annette Holloway caught the tour in Virginia Beach on August 5. You may see that she agrees with me with her review of the full lineup.

The 1980s were a coming of age for me. My age hit double digits, and my love of music started to blossom. Amongst my growth, was music from a band that everybody knew and loved. This band was so influential at the time that we paid homage to them by naming the rock band we formed in Grade 8 after them. That Junior Highschool band was called “Split Styxx”. Funny enough, our band never even ended up playing one song together, but the memories will last a lifetime, as will the music from this era.

A trip through time on August 16, 2022… and I left a happy man!

STYX WITH NANCY WILSON’S HEART

Where: Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, 1925 Blanshard St.

When: Wednesday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $55-$129 from 250-220-7777 or selectyourtickets.com

Nine albums in seven years? That’s almost impossible to consider, let alone create. But that was the pace for Chicago-based progressive rock band Styx during the 1970s, which laid the foundation for bigger things to come.

When the calendar flipped to 1980, the group struck gold with Babe , a power ballad that landed at No. 1 on the Billboard single charts. Overnight, Styx was crowned the most popular rock band in the U.S., according to a Gallup poll at the time. The band’s wildly successful run on the charts was cut short in 1983, however, when singer Dennis De Young left the group following the release of Kilroy Was Here , its fifth consecutive million seller.

In most cases, the band would not recover. But most bands aren’t Styx.

“There’s going to be ebbs and flows and ups and downs, and all those various ways of describing how a career fluctuates,” said Lawrence Gowan, 65, who took over lead vocals and keyboards for the group in 1999. “And during all those periods, people thought, ‘Could this be the demise of Styx?’ But each time, they somehow came back again.”

Gowan, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but raised from an early age in Toronto, watched the rise of Styx from afar, while simultaneously making his own way as a solo artist. He was always a fan of progressive rock acts like Genesis, who bridged the gap between long instrumental passages and pop hooks, so when he was asked to join the similarly-styled Styx he didn’t wait long to respond.

The band will open its Canadian tour in Victoria on Wednesday, with a concert at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. It will be the first time in several decades that either Gowan or Styx have performed in Victoria, though Gowan said he has fond memories of his previous shows in the market. His last appearance here was a 1996 concert at the former Harpo’s Cabaret, three years before he was scooped by Styx. “I rarely went two years without playing Victoria. And you guys were on my touring schedule for 1999, until I joined Styx and we had to change everything.”

Gowan expects next week’s concert (which features Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson as the opening act) to resemble the band’s stateside shows this summer, which made for an inspiring run. “The response was beyond the normal loud yelling and cheering,” he said. “It was heartfelt, and very, very rewarding to see that from the stage.”

During his 23 years with the group, he reckons the average Styx fan has not changed. But while the diehards remain, a new, younger music fan has entered the picture, and their presence has breathed new life into the band’s concerts, according to Gowan.

“A rock concert is a different form of entertainment — it’s a visceral experience, where you are going on a musical journey. The greatest form of entertainment is a great rock show. And why is it that? It stays with you.”

Gowan and his bandmates — singer-guitarists James Young and Tommy Shaw, bassist Chuck Panozzo, drummer Todd Sucherman, and bassist Ricky Phillips — recently wrapped their summer tour of the U.S. with REO Speedwagon and Loverboy, which included 44 consecutive sold-out performances. Their lone Canadian performance was in Toronto on Aug. 16, the first time in three years Styx had performed outside the U.S.

Gowan said he loves it when Styx performs in Canada, especially when the group adds Gowan’s solo hit, A Criminal Mind , to its setlist. Much of the material in the band’s current concerts is taken from albums The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1981), and Paradise Theatre (1981), all of which were released years before Gowan joined the group. But when audiences in Canada hear the first strains of A Criminal Mind echo through the arena, it’s clear his song still carries weight.

“It’s really special,” Gowan said. “The first time I ever played the song was in 1985 — who could possibly foresee that I’d still be playing it 37 years later?”

Another solo Gowan hit, (You’re A) Strange Animal , made its way back into pop culture consciousness this summer through Oscar winner Jordan Peele, whose most recent movie, Nope , used the song prominently in the film.

“I started getting social media messages from people when it came out, who said they stood up in the movie theatre and yelled, ‘Gowan!!,” he said with a laugh. “Music has a life of its own, and so often something you are not expecting at all is out there dancing on the fringes. It is almost of its own volition.”

Nick Taylor looks to defend his crown as the Tour heads to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

styx canadian tour dates

Nick Taylor will try to make history once more as he looks to defend his title at the Canadian Open this weekend.

An epic 72-foot playoff putt saw Taylor clinch last year's title ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, a shot that saw him become the first Canadian to win this tournament since Pat Fletcher back in 1954.

Taylor's win last year ended a run of two wins in a row for Rory McIlroy, and the Irish star is being widely backed by the bookies to return to winning ways in this tournament alongside last year's runner-up, Fleetwood.

How to watch the the Canadian Open 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming the Canadian Open 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

2024 RBC Canadian Open leaderboard: Robert MacIntyre secures first PGA Tour victory with father as caddie

The rookie had to scratch and claw on sunday, but the effort resulted in a career-defining moment.

The first one never comes easy. Robert MacIntyre learned that this week at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open as the PGA Tour rookie successfully held onto his 54-hole lead at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for a one-stroke victory over Ben Griffin at 16 under. The win marked the first of MacIntyre's PGA Tour career, and it came with his father serving as caddie.

With his maiden triumph, MacIntyre becomes the fifth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season, joining Matthieu Pavon as those who utilized the DP World Tour pathway to get to this stage. Not only has the Scotsman locked up his playing privileges for the next two seasons, he enters the winner's circle at a timely point on the calendar as he punches his ticket into the U.S. Open in two weeks at Pinehurst.

The win was particularly emotional for MacIntyre, who admitted that a bit of homesickness led to him calling his father, Dougie, to caddie for him this week in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

"I'm speechless, to be honest," MacIntyre told CBS after the victory. "... This is just everything for me and my family. ... I can't believe I've done it with him on the bag. I'm crying with joy but laughing because I didn't think this was possible."

Dougie shared details of the sudden the decision before MacIntyre confirmed that his father would be returning to Scotland with him unlikely to play next week.

"I got phoned last Saturday. I'm sitting on the couch at home, 8:00 Saturday night. I gotta leave my job -- you know, I'm busy at work -- by 8:00 the next morning, I'm on a flight out here. Wow," Dougie said.

MacIntyre began the final round in possession of a record four-stroke lead, his first after 54 holes on the PGA Tour. He saw that advantage disappear within just over an hour of play as he dropped a shot on the first hole while Canadian Mackenzie Hughes rattled off three straight birdies in the penultimate group to square the two momentarily.

Hughes was not the only player to throw punches in the direction of MacIntyre as Tom Kim opened with three straight birdies and Rory McIlroy made his presence known with four birdies in his first six holes. The two turned in 4-under 31 and looked primed to post a number the 27-year-old would need to surpass.

Instead of growing concerned, MacIntyre responded with three birdies to close out his front half including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 7-8. With Hughes leaking oil and Kim dropping a shot ahead of him, the burly left hander seized control of a five-stroke lead and the tournament with an emphatic birdie on the difficult par-4 11th.

With seven holes to play, MacIntyre appeared in full control until he wasn't. A misfire off the tee with an iron on No. 12 led to a bogey and another one followed soon after on the par-3 13th. He remained in good shape as Kim and McIlroy posted 13 under in the clubhouse, but the tournament got tense when Victor Perez birdied his last to get to 14 under.

For a moment, it appeared that would be the number for MacIntyre to beat from 16 under; however, playing partner Griffin entered the conversation with a lengthy birdie conversion on the par-3 16th to pull within two. Griffin continued to apply pressure with another birdie on the par-5 17th to cut the lead to one with one to play.

That would be as close as he would get with MacIntyre leaving no doubt when his approach into the finisher settled 9 feet from the pin with two putts available to secure the title. When Griffin missed his birdie chance from just off the green, MacIntyre patiently found the bottom of the cup with his father right there by his side to witness it all. Grade: A+

Here are grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the RBC Canadian Open.

T4. Rory McIlroy (-13): McIlroy's week consisted of some good golf and some not-so-good golf, yet he almost won anyway. His iron play stole the show on Thursday and Saturday where he gained more than six combined strokes on approach across those two rounds. Unfortunately for McIlroy, these two performances sandwiched one on Friday in which he lost three strokes with the scoring clubs en route to carding a 2-over 72. Paired with Kim over the weekend, McIlroy drafted on the youngster's momentum and emerged late on Sunday as MacIntyre's biggest threat. A couple back-nine birdies in the final round made it so he played his last 36 holes in 11 under, but it wasn't enough to capture win No. 27. Grade: A

"A good week," McIlroy said. "Three really good rounds of golf, one not so good one. Felt a little out of sorts on Friday. Did a good range session and sort of rectified it. So, yeah, overall, three rounds out of four were really good and just that one disappointing one on Friday, but overall after a week off where I didn't really, didn't feel like I prepared as well as I probably could have. Yeah, it was a solid week."

T4 . Tom Kim (-13): Kim made the biggest move early Sunday. The three-time PGA Tour winner failed to take advantage of the par-5 4th and the short par-4 5th but did well to add one more to turn in 31. Birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 pulled Kim within a couple of the lead and gave him a chance to go and post a number. A miss from inside 4 feet on the 14th halted all momentum leaving Kim without much hope. Amid a somewhat uneventful year, Kim's play in Canada marks his first top-five finish of the season and could serve as a launchpad for the remainder of the summer. Grade: A

T7. Mackenzie Hughes (-10): After Nick Taylor broke a 69-year drought last year, Hughes aimed to become the second straight Canadian to win his nation's open. He got off to a dream start rattling off three straight birdies from Nos. 2-4 to touch the lead and put his country's flag above the rest. His biggest mistake of the day came on the short par-4 5th where he dropped a shot before another came a few holes later at No. 9 after hitting a shank on his second which effectively took him out of contention. Grade: A-

T21. Tommy Fleetwood (-7): The Englishman hovered for most of the week and entered the final round with a fighter's chance. His opening double bogey immediately put any thoughts of a comeback to a rest as Fleetwood was unable to recover and ultimately settled for a top-20 finish instead. He has played some nice golf since San Antonio -- highlighted by his podium finish at the Masters-- but Fleetwood is still without a true contention run on the PGA Tour in 2024. Grade: B-

MC. Sahith Theegala (--): Theegala's weekend omission came as a bit of a surprise as he arrived ranked second in total strokes gained this year among those in the field. He never got things rolling in the right direction and experienced everything from a 4-putt double bogey to his driver breaking. It marks Theegala's second individual missed cut of the season and his first since the Sony Open in early January. While disappointing, there shouldn't be too much concern about the state of his game. Grade: F

One-stroke lead with one to play

Ben Griffin makes birdie and Robert MacIntyre does well to make par on 17. They head to the last with Bobby Mac leading by one.

Oh, hello Ben Griffin

Ben Griffin from DEEP! The lead remains two strokes, but Ben Griffin is officially lurking as he plays alongside Robert MacIntyre. With two holes remaining, Griffin will hope to close the gap starting with the par-5 17th.

How you doin, Victor Perez?!

Wow, wow, wow. That's how you finish! Victor Perez closes with a birdie on 18 to post a 6-under 64 and snag the clubhouse lead at 14 under. That puts him one behind Robert MacIntyre who still has a handful of holes to play at 15 under.

Kim and McIlroy post clubhouse lead

The two played alongside each other the final two rounds and they both post 65-64 over the weekend. They are in the clubhouse at 13 under and two behind Robert MacIntyre who has five holes remaining.

Lead trimmed to three

Well, things have tightened. Rory McIlroy makes birdie on the 17th to get to 13 under while Bobby MacIntyre makes bogey on the 12th after hitting his tee shot into the water hazard. He just missed the green on the par-3 13th meaning McIlroy could apply a little pressure if he is to birdie the last and post the clubhouse lead at 14 under.

Scottish left-hander Robert MacIntyre wins RBC Canadian Open for his first PGA Tour title

H AMILTON, Ontario (AP) — Robert MacIntyre — with father Dougie at his side as his caddie and a noisy television drone close by at times, too — held on to win the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title.

Four strokes ahead entering the final round at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, MacIntyre shot a 2-under 68 to beat playing partner Ben Griffin by a stroke. On the par-4 18th, the 27-year-old Scottish left-hander two-putted for par from 12 feet, holing out from 1 1/2 feet.

“Goose bumps. It’s incredible,” MacIntyre said. “It’s a dream of mine to play golf for a living. It’s been a dream of mine to win on the PGA Tour. ... I just can’t believe I done it with my dad on the bag. The guy’s taught me the way I play golf.”

MacIntyre finished at 16-under 264 for the breakthrough victory in his 45th career PGA Tour start. The former McNeese State player was a member of Europe’s winning 2023 Ryder Cup team and has two European tour victories, the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown and 2022 Italian Open.

“I was in a dog fight there,” MacIntyre said. “Obviously, Ben made it difficult coming in the stretch. He played well. It’s just incredible to do this with my dad on the bag and have my girlfriend here and I’m sure there’s a party going on back home in Oban.”

MacIntyre was agitated by a television drone he thought was too close and loud.

“If it didn’t go away, I was going to start throwing my clubs at it,” MacIntyre said. “That’s how annoyed I was getting. ... I mean, it’s a big wasp. I asked them to get rid of it. They did.”

MacIntyre turned to his father on an emergency basis after going through a series of caddies in the last year.

“This week, when I phoned him to come and caddie for me, to be honest, I was just coming here to play a golf tournament,” MacIntyre said. “There was no expectation, there was a lot going on with visas and stuff during the week and to win it with him on the bag is just — to be honest, I still can’t believe that it happened.”

It was an emotional victory for the two.

“Everything that I’ve done in my life has been with the support of my family,” MacIntyre said. “The game of golf was kind of passed down the generations. I got it from my dad. ... We’ve got a house between where you cross the road for four holes over the road at Glencruitten and we used to go out every night in the summer, no matter the weather. Wwe would play four holes every night. He taught me the game of golf.”

Griffin had a 65. He parred the 18th after birdieing the previous three holes.

“I fought hard,” Griffin said. “It felt like there was a lid on the cup for most of the day for me. I hit so many pretty good putts, I wouldn’t say like striped putts, but pretty good putts and just kept burning edges. A couple bad putts, but stayed patient.”

Victor Perez of France was third at 14 under after his second straight 64.

Two-time Canadian Open champion Rory McIlroy also shot 64 to tie for fourth with Tom Kim (64) at 13 under. McIlroy won in 2019 the last time the tournament was in Hamilton and again in 2022 at St. George’s in Toronto.

“Three really good rounds of golf, one not so good one,” McIlroy said. “Felt a little out of sorts on Friday. Did a good range session and sort of rectified it.”

Corey Conners was the top Canadian, shooting a 65 to reach 12 under.

“Definitely something to be proud of,” Conners said. "Yeah, obviously disappointing to not win the big trophy, but, yeah, it’s a cool honor.

Fellow Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, tied for second entering the day, was another shot back after a 70.

“Pretty gutted,” Hughes saidf. “I wanted this one pretty badly. ... This one will sting for awhile."

Last year at Oakdale in Toronto, Nick Taylor made a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth hole of a playoff against Tommy Fleetwood to become the first Canadian to win the event since 1954.
