The USS Voyager NCC-74656 was one of the four of its kind made with newly advanced technology that makes it so advanced from the other previous Starships. Its length measures 344 metres and its width is 130 metres wide. The Voyager is an Intrepid-class Starship. This ship can hold two hundred crew membersthough only one hundred and fifty four crew members were recruited when it was first sent into the Badlands to find the Maquis. The crew complement however, was somewhat reduced throughout its journey in the Delta Quadrant due to frequent encounters with hostile aliens or anomalies. To compensate, new recruits were added to the positions needing fulfilling.

There are fifteen decks on the VoyagerDeck One being the top of the saucer and Deck Fifteen being the lowest deck. The Bridge, the center of all operations, is on Deck One. The main source of power to the ship's systems is located on Decks Ten and Eleven being Main Engineering.

Intrepid-class ships are new classes of Starships with advanced technology. It costs relatively less than a Galaxy-class ship. It was built to defend against the Cardassians, Maquis, and the Borg, where the starship is highly maneuverable and was designed for tactical missions.

Some of its features are its bioneural gel packs, systems to increase isolinear processors, variable geometry warp nacelles which allows high-warp flight, and an Emergency Medical Hologram which is also installed into this class to handle health of the crew in emergency situations when the resident Doctor is not available. The EMH has become the ship's main medical personnel when the Voyager's original doctor was killed in action during their encounter with the Caretaker when they first entered the Delta Quadrant.

One feature that other Intrepid-class ships do not have is the (ten times more accurate) advanced Astrometrics Laboratory. The technological advancement to the ship with Borg technology was added during the alliance between the Borg and the crew of Voyager in 2374, stardate 51003.7.

As advanced as the intrepid-class is there are two minor offsets with the ships: they are not designed for families and the replicators are not the most reliable.

But like all Starships, the Voyager includes a set of structural and operation systemsSelf-destruct and warp-core ejection, escape pods, jefferies tube network, bussard ramscoops, reaction control systems, docking bays, and fluid handling systems.

The U.S.S Voyager NCC-74656 is an Intrepid-class starship. As is the case with all Starfleet ships, the bridge is on Deck 1, at the top of the command saucer. On the bridge, the captain and her senior officers acquire instrument and sensor data, control command functions, access the main computer, analyze situations, and take any action that seems proper. The bridge is the brain of the ship.

The bridge area is decorated in tones of silver, gray, and chrome. Control surfaces are black, with the usual array of colored pads arranged into a keyboard. Because the sophisticated onboard computer is capable of determining and executing all routine operations, trained crew members are able to control the ship with a minimum of keystrokes. When it is necessary to enter directional information, one may use the circular 'joystick' pad.

Reference Tables

Updated September 8, 2023

When I first started making my starship comparison charts, I gave little thought to documenting my references. I just wanted to see the ships side-by-side! But over the years, the Star Trek Minutiae reference charts have been shared widely on social media and have even been referenced (sometimes erroneously) by official sources. To help provide the most accurate information possible, these tables provide sources for the size of the ship and credit for the artist (where known) who created the image that is used in the chart. If any ship image is used with missing or incorrect credit, please let me know !

Starship Sizes

What is so interesting about starship sizes?

My answer is that they are an important part of Star Trek's consistency. Other figures such as warp speed or phaser power often lead to pointless discussions because they are quite abstract. In contrast, a physical dimension is something much more definite because it can be determined without any knowledge about fictitious subspace physics or the rapid nadion effect. We just need to recall that starships are built to accommodate humans or humanoids to recognize that size does matter.

General Considerations

Starship sizes are often unknown or, even worse, disputed. The reason is that they are no real-world objects designed for and built in a certain size. Each ship exists only as a model (hardware or CGI), plus a limited number of full-scale sets that are supposed to be somewhere inside. The size of the "real" ship depends not only on what the model looks like but also on how it is presented on screen. Kitbashing or scaling up and down an existing design often obstructs the size estimation.

Basically, there are three possible references to determine the size of a starship:

Outer/inner structure The decks of Federation starships are usually around 3.5m tall, confirmed by the interior sets whose basic cross-sections are about the same for all Federation ships and by MSDs and deck measurements of those ships whose size and deck count is known. The clear height of rooms and corridors on a ship is some 2.5m, bearing in mind that 24th century humans are evidently not taller than in the 21st century. Andrew Probert assumed 10 feet between decks, 2 feet in between and hence a ceiling height of 8 feet. Rick Sternbach designed the deck centerlines to be 3m to 4m apart, with 0.5m in between to accommodate EPS and consumables conduits. This gives us up to 3.5m clear space, or it would allow Jefferies tubes between the decks . So unless we know how tall the decks are intended to be, there is an uncertainty range of some 25%. Moreover, this method doesn't work for alien vessels that often don't have window rows to count, let alone cross-sections to shed light on their internal structure. Even if it were possible to count the decks, the deck height is not necessarily the same as on Federation ships. Using deck heights as a scale Evaluating starship encounters Starship encounters Starship encounters or space battles are commonly used references, provided that trustworthy figures for at least one of the participating ships are known. However, when analyzing the visual effects of the pre-CGI age, the limitations of motion control photography have to be taken into account. Occasionally two ships of different scales were filmed in one take (like the Excelsior and Enterprise-D), moreover naturally at a much too close distance. Shuttles sometimes can't be made as small as they should be because they would be barely recognizable. But even in cases where it would be technically possible to get the relative scaling right and with modern CGI, VFX people sometimes don't do their job carefully enough or even increase or decrease ships intentionally for the dramatic impact. So the comparison method may yield contradictory results. A considerable error has to be taken into account, and often the only reliable statement is something like "the unknown ship X is bigger than ship A", or "ship X is at most or at least y meters long". Official/VFX sizes Size figures in official publications or given by individuals involved in the production process (Probert, Okuda, Sternbach, Drexler, Eaves, Stipes) are possible references likewise. However, they should be treated judiciously, for they don't necessarily reflect the "actual" sizes of the ships. For instance, if the designer says his ship is x meters long, but the VFX people evidently always assume y meters, the whole thing has to be reconsidered. Moreover, ship sizes may be based on a preliminary sketch rather than the final ship, or they use a faulty reference, which is the case in the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual where, among other ships, the well-known Excelsior is scaled up by 10%. The sizes mentioned in several official publications are evaluated on a separate page .

A Classification System

Concerning the reliability of size figures and of the designs themselves, I have found the following categories of ships (however, I don't refer to them elsewhere at EAS because they are too abstract):

Type A A ship which has been designed in a process close to real engineering and is well-documented, implying that the designer has adhered to a certain size and deck count and the people in charge of the VFX abide by this size. There is at least a sketch of the interior layout in the form of an MSD or a similar cross-section, and it has to match the outer appearance as indicated by window rows and lifeboats. If such a ship is present in a scene with contradictory size ratios, it has to be used as a reference, rather than being scaled up or down itself. Such a design is what it should be, a scale model, i.e. with a fixed scale and a definite size. Only the major ships featured in the shows, the Constitution refit, Galaxy, Intrepid and NX classes are of this type, but rather not the Defiant and definitely not the "Star Trek (2009)" Enterprise . Type B A ship which has not been designed quite as carefully as type A, but whose size can be exactly determined due to very reliable references. For instance, the ship employs the same components as another ship, or there is a size chart that has been used for both the design and the VFX. If this applies, the figures are as reliable as those of type A. The Miranda, Constellation, Sydney , Nebula , Prometheus, Vor'cha, D7 and K't'inga are members of type B. Type C A ship whose size is not quite as evident, but can be determined with a reasonable uncertainty range. This is the case if the size based on the deck count, the size comparison with other ships, a possible figure provided by the designer and references from literature are close together. The error should not be more than 10%. This type includes the Ambassador, Excelsior , Akira , Oberth , D'deridex, Galor and the Ferengi Marauder. Type D A ship whose size stays roughly the same in VFX shots, but a reliable figure is not available. Such a ship often doesn't have window rows to count, and it seems it has been intentionally designed without a definite size in mind. There are many alien ship types in this category, for instance the Romulan scout, Jem'Hadar "bug" and battlecruiser, (Bajoran) Antares-class freighter and Bajoran raider, as well as the Norway, Steamrunner and Saber. Type E A ship whose perceived size is subject to vary and is in dispute, irrespective of the figures given in publications, by the designer or by the VFX staff. This is the case if a design changes its size (Defiant, Deep Space 9, "Star Trek (2009)" Enterprise) or if the same model is used to represent ships of intentionally different sizes ( Klingon Bird-of-Prey , Kazon raider/fighter , Jem'Hadar battleship ), both of which is impossible. The same applies for kitbashed designs combining scaled components such as the Yeager class. Type F A ship whose size is not that relevant. These are alien-of-the-week ships for which the same model (the triangular guest starship from TNG, for instance) is used again and again. Other ships whose size doesn't matter that much are those which can be described as "just huge" (Borg cube, Kazon mothership) or "just tiny" (ships which are described as shuttles or single-seated).

Summarizing, there are reliable figures for type A and B ships. The sizes of type C ships are not exactly known, but the evidence is sufficient for a good estimation. Ships of type D are satisfactory in that there are no blatant inconsistencies, but fans have derived different figures all of which could be true. Essentially the same applies to the type F ships.

This leaves the type E ships as the ones that cause controversies because of contradictory evidence. We have to come up with a compromise, but which one would be appropriate? We could take the average of the varying VFX sizes. We could ignore the most blatant outliers from what we consider a reasonable size. We could decide that the designer's intent overrules VFX sizes if the latter are not consistent. There is no ultimate recipe and usually no definitely true or wrong size estimation. And even though some of the conclusions at EAS may sound dogmatic, I am open to suggestions.

star trek voyager ship size

Type G A ship that has been redesigned per the "visual reboot" principle. This always means, it is much bigger (in DIS or SNW) than it used to be (in TOS). The original USS Enterprise and the D7 battlecruiser belong into this category.

There is most definitely no way the TOS and the corresponding DIS/SNW starship designs could be the same or could have the same size. This is the most important of several reasons why starships from the reboots are in confinement at EAS.

Starship Size Table - a list of starship sizes as given in several publications

Starship Scaling - about starships that look the same but are (supposed to be) of different sizes

Fleet Charts - comparison of all ships which allow a reasonable size estimation

Fleet Chart Annotations - references used for the ship lengths listed at EAS

The New Enterprise Design - my two cents on the redesign in "Star Trek (2009)" and its true size

Defiant Problems - Just how little is the tough little ship?

The Bird-of-Prey Size Paradox - one, two or even more sizes?

Size of the Dominion Battleship - Does the 5km version really exist?

Thanks to Boris S. and to the people in the Starships & Other Technology forum of the Flare Sci-Fi Forums for suggestions. Thanks to Greg Price for the deck height references.

From the main sensor cluster on the forward hull to the tiny markings on the escape pod hatches scattered around the  Intrepid -class ship, nearly every square inch of the XL  Voyager is filled with familiar Starfleet design elements.

The ship has some serious heft to it, as well: the upper surface of the hull, trailing back to the deck of the hanger runway is all comprised of Eaglemoss’ signature die-cast metal.

While certain textural details are softer than comparable renders in the underside’s injected-plastic components, areas like the bridge module and aft torpedo launchers still pack a visual punch.

I’ve sung a lot of this new  Voyager  model’s praises, and well deserved — but like the previous  XL Starships releases, this ship isn’t perfect. Like our primary criticism of the  Enterprise NX-01 model , the plastic stand that comes with  Voyager is really not as supportive as it needs to be for a model this front-heavy.

The V-shaped grip really needs to have some longer lower-rung supports to hold this ship securely; the center of gravity on the XL  Voyager is about an inch ahead of where the stand ends and the ship slides off its perch quite easily. (I ended up adding a bit of friction tape to the stand to keep it from falling quite so easily.)

In addition, the familiar window-alignment issue returns once more to detract from the  Voyager model’s overall presentation. As asked back when the  Enterprise -D model faced similar paint alignment problems, why does Eaglemoss still include window divots in their tooling if the paint isn’t going to be even close to the target?

Honestly, while the window issue is as annoying as ever, it’s really the only thing we take issue with on the XL  Voyager  model. For the price, it’s something that we’d love to see corrected, but at this point it’s almost become a staple of the Eaglemoss starships.

Overall, though, this model is such a step up in detail and presentation from the original that it may just be our favorite of the  XL Starships line to date. I just wish we could flip up the nacelles to their at-warp position to really make the ship come to life!

The ship also includes the standard  Official Starships Collection magazine, this time focusing on the development and casting of  Star Trek: Voyager rather than duplicating the starship technical details found in the original  Voyager model magazine.

Enterprise-D vs. Voyager (extenuating circumstances)

Discussion in ' General Trek Discussion ' started by Captain McBain , Sep 27, 2012 .

The Enterprise-D and The Voyager meet in the Beta Quadrant. Both believe the other needs to be destroyed for some strange reason. Communication with Starfleet is impossible. The Enterprise-D has onboard Reginald Barclay after his intelligence was fully enhanced by the Cytherians. The Voyager has the 29th century Borg onboard. Each ship has their normal complement, but the aformentioned individuals are the acting captains for this scenario. Also, calling upon allies is not possible, and this is the 4th season version for both ships. Who wins this battle?

This is the case of a battleship vs a destroyer pretty much. The E-D wins easily... as the 29th century Borg said, there's only so many enhancements a ship can make based on the technology it has so that would pretty much cancel each other out.
Voyager has more firepower than the Enterprise, though, correct?

I'd say the Enterprise, since Barclay was able to do things far beyond what the drone could do.

In a Star Trek battle between two ships, one named Enterprise, the other not, the Enterprise will almost always win... eventually. Even if it takes two hours of running time and/or a bunch of children to do it.

If pound for pound and ton for ton, both ship's were equal then the Enterprise wins. The Enterprise simply brings more of everything to a fight. Let's say that in the opening moment of the battle both ship's lose a 150 people, the Voyager now has no crew and is lifeless, the Enterprise has another 850 people for a victory party. It's like a well muscled 6 year old taking on a 20 year old prize fighter.

I think those were from fan productions... everything else is accurate. And of course Voyager is faster, it's smaller. That doesn't translate to great combat ability though.
Well, R. Star, the Borg Cubes are much more massive than the Enterprise or Voyager, but they are faster than both.

Voyager was "theoretically" a weaker, but much faster ship than Enterprise D. However, according to the Voyager episodes, the ship was dozens of times more powerful than than Enterprise D. Look at the fact that a lone borg cube wiped out something like half the federation ships. in Best Of Both Worlds. And Enterprise D was powerless to stop it. Now Voyager takes on a Borg Tactical cube, you know, a borg cube amped up to the inth degree. And single handedly cripples the cube. Wow, either Voyager is tough, or Brannon Braga needs to be taken out to the wood shed.

Voyager, is not a dedicated science vessel, if any class from that era could be classed as a dedicated science vessel it would be the Nova Class just as the Oberth Class was the science vessel of the late 23rd early 24th century.

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Starship Voyager

Development of the fourth Star Trek series started in the middle of 1993, during the last season of The Next Generation and the second season of Deep Space Nine . Executive Producer Jeri Taylor decided as early as August that the new ship should be sleeker and smaller than the Enterprise -D.

Rick Sternbach, who was then working as an illustrator and tech consultant on The Next Generation , was brought on board the following month. He wasted no time getting the design process started.

It was the first lead ship Sternbach designed. He had been responsible for various alien ships and shuttlecraft on The Next Generation , including the runabout, but his predecessor, Andrew Probert, had created the Enterprise -D.

Sternbach’s early sketches of Voyager show a streamlined vessel with a dart-like primary hull and a flattened, elongated engineering section, sporting swept-back runabout-like warp pylons.

Voyager concept art

Pieces were added and subtracted and hull contours, both gently curved and angular, were explored in perspective over the course of weeks and months. Hull cross sections were drawn in blue pencil to check internal deck heights, total number of decks and overall ship length. Sternbach prepared comparisons with familiar Starfleet vessels to help the producers decide.

They added to his challenge by deciding Voyager should be able to land on a planetary surface. That meant the ship needed deployable landing gear.

By the spring of 1994, something resembling the Voyager we know had emerged. The slightly angular dart front had been smoothed off and nestled into the engineering section — still assuming a separation capability — and sweeping pylons ended in a set of long nacelles. The nacelles had doors to open up the warp coils for some kind of new energy jump. Impulse thrusters were buried underneath, similar to the runabout, and a large triangular wedge sat atop the ship, possibly acting as a scout craft or long-range sensor array.

Voyager concept art

Notable details included a large forward sensor cutout and a stepped engineering hull that supported a ring of large cargo bays and impulse engines. The former would stay, the latter was eliminated.

Fast-looking ship

This was a fast-looking ship, with a hint of solid engine hardware showing on the outside.

When the producers signed off, Sternbach proceeded to the initial blueprint and study-model stages. He scaled up a top plan view of the ship to a length of 48 inches, the presumed size of the motion-control model. From this, he derived bottom, side, fore and aft views. The side elevation and resulting cutaway suggested that the ship would be about 1,000 feet long, the same size as Kirk’s Enterprise .

Voyager cutaway

Following the Starfleet tradition, Sternbach reserved space for the bridge on Deck 1 and a variety of placeholder windows on the hull, which would be built into standing sets.

Windows are an important design factor, because of the coordination needed between the studio and outside model makers for continuity between the exterior and interior of the ship. Since Voyager would be smaller than the Enterprise -D, the windows would be proportionately larger and more visible on the television screen. That made it even more important that they matched the sets.

Just as Sternbach was about to produce a final set of blueprints for the model makers (he had even produced a small mock-up model himself), Taylor came back and asked if he could not make Voyager a little curvier after all.

Saucer separation was no longer necessary. This allowed Sternbach to integrate the primary and secondary hulls more smoothly.

Voyager concept art

Sternbach continued to play with the nacelle placement. Should they be on pylons, like on the Enterprise -D? Or downturned, like a runabout? Early in July, the final nacelle movements were completed with the 45-degree wing-up angle being approved by the producers.

Building the miniature

Sternbach drew up five orthographic projections of the final version: top, bottom, starboard, forward and aft elevations. These went to the model builders in August: Tony Meininger’s Brazil Fabrication. They also received detailed sketches from Sternbach as to intended function, color or whether a lighting effect was required.

Voyager thruster concept art

Two months later, Meininger delivered the model to Image G for shooting, although some modifications and detailing continued until December.

Voyager came on the air at a time when huge advancements were being made in computer-generated imagery (CGI). Over the course of the first few seasons, models were phased out and digitally-created starships entered service. By Season 4, in 1997, Meininger’s studio model had become obsolete. It was sold off at auction in 2006 to an Englishman for $110,000.

Stock footage of the model continued to be used. You can tell the two versions apart from the windows underneath the shuttlebay. The windows are lighted in the CGI model. There was no room to install electrical wiring in the physical miniature, who whenever those windows are dark, you know you’re looking at the real thing.

Voyager model

Thank you for this cool online resource! The Eaglemoss Designing Starships volumes 1 and 2 have 50-75 percent of the drawings featured on the site, when the topics align, but it’s that last 25-50 percent that’s really special. Seeing rough versions, or extra angles, or so forth, is very rewarding for me. I understand that there’s only so much space in a paper book, but that’s what makes the digital delivery medium interesting! Plus, you have lots of concept art for sets, while the hardback collections I have focus almost entirely on the ship models. Any set details are incidental, when they were referenced in the ship blueprints (like some of the deck detailing on the Voyager cutaways here).

The Star Trek franchise consists primarily of several multi-season television shows and a dozen movies, as well as various video games and inspired merchandise. Many aspects of the fictional universe impact modern popular culture, especially the lingo and the idea of a spacecraft launching space torpedoes and firing lasers, and have had a wide influence in the late 20th to early 21st century. Star Trek is popular enough that its science fiction concepts have even been studied by real scientists, and NASA described its science in relation to the real world as "entertaining combination of real science, imaginary science gathered from lots of earlier stories, and stuff the writers make up week-by-week to give each new episode novelty." For example, NASA noted that the Star Trek "phasers" were a fictional extrapolation of real-life lasers, and compared them to real-life microwave based weapons that have a stunning effect.

Did Star Trek: Voyager really have the best pilot?

S tar Trek: Voyager is a great show, spoiler alert on that one. We've given plenty of love to Voyager over the years and for a lot of reasons. Kathryne Janeway is one of the best-written captains, the scenario that Voyager is in highlights the strengths of the crew and the depth of their humanity. The entire ship is just beautiful from top to bottom and they even found a way to move off of the instant gratification of food replicators.

So much of what the show did was brilliant, but if I'm being honest, I always felt the pilot was less great than it could've been. There were certainly moments in it that added to it, for sure. Like docking at Deep Space Nine and watching Quark of all people make Harry Kim sweat before being saved by Tom Paris. It was awesome.

Yet, the time they spent on the Caretaker's Array I felt was long, and at times boring. I never really thought about Voyager's pilot being good or bad, not until Giant Freaking Robot bestowed the moniker of "best pilot" on it while proclaiming that Deep Space Nine was the worst pilot in franchise history.

I didn't see any of that coming, so consider me "shooked". Their arguments as to why one is perceived as bad and one is seen as good are in dispute, Deep Space Nine's pilot is very "slow". It focuses more on the emotional toll that Benjamin Sisko has had to deal with for the last few years, and his hatred for Jean-Luc Picard. It's a powerful episode, but not "fun".

Voyager's is very "fun". From the reveal that one of the Maquis was actually a member of Janeway's crew, to the introduction of Neelix and the whole issue they had with the Kazon. It was a lot of fun for the most part, but I still wouldn't say it was the "best".

For me specifically, though, I wouldn't say Star Trek pilots should be seen as "good" or "bad' as they're all important but are also all looking for their legs. They're not great. You don't want to start any person's fandom off by showing them the pilot. You show them "In the Pale Moonlight" or "Scorpion" first, then you go back.

Though, for my money, I would say of the golden era of Trek, Enterprise's pilot was my favorite, and of the Nu Trek era, I would say Strange New Worlds is the best. In fact, I would argue that Strange New Worlds is arguably the best pilot in the franchise's history; if I believed in that sort of thing.

Voyager is why star trek is replacing discovery’s spore drive.

Starfleet is abandoning the spore drive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, having found a better form of warp travel thanks to the USS Voyager.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 bids farewell to the spore drive, as USS Voyager's pathway drive takes over in the 32nd century.
  • Commander Stamets reveals Starfleet's decision to halt spore drive development, making Discovery unique in the Star Trek franchise.
  • The USS Voyager-J's pathway drive paves the way for safer and sustainable warp travel in Star Trek's future.

The 32nd century's version of the USS Voyager is the reason that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is abandoning Starfleet's revolutionary spore drive technology. Since they arrived in the 32nd century in season 3, the USS Discovery crew's one-of-a-kind spore drive has represented a potential replacement for dilithium-reliant warp travel in Star Trek 's future . However, various obstacles, most notably rogue Risan scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and his theft of the only working prototype have prevented the spore drive from being rolled out.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) reveals that Starfleet has shuttered further development on the spore drive . Starfleet's decision means that the USS Discovery will remain one-of-a-kind, making season 5 the last outing for Starfleet's spore drive. Instead of taking Discovery's spore drive further, Starfleet are instead forging ahead with the new pathway drive, first trialed by the USS Voyager-J in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek Is Ditching Discovery's Spore Drive - And That's Good!

Uss voyager is why star trek is quitting discovery’s spore drive, voyager has a history of scientific advancement in starfleet..

In Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 premiere, "Kobayashi Maru", it was revealed that the USS Voyager-J had been newly fitted with a protoype pathway drive . Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) was looking for the right captain to command the ship and test out this new technology. Now, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive" reveals that those tests were successful, leading to the pathway drive being the new standard for future Starfleet ships. The rollout is still in the early stages, however, as Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) states that his ship, the USS Antares, doesn't have a pathway drive fitted.

Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) was under consideration to command the USS Voyager-J, but President Rillak didn't believe that she was ready.

It feels appropriate that the USS Voyager is responsible for replacing Star Trek: Discovery 's spore drive, given its namesake's impact on warp travel centuries earlier . Star Trek: Prodigy revealed that, after returning to the Alpha Quadrant, much of the technology the USS Voyager encountered in the Delta Quadrant was adapted by Starfleet. For example, the USS Dauntless, commanded by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) had a quantum slipstream drive fitted, first encountered in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 finale, "Hope and Fear".

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Trek’s Delta Quadrant

When will we see star trek: discovery's pathway drive in action.

As the USS Discovery is in the middle of a vitally important mission to find the Progenitors' technology to create life, it doesn't seem like there will be much time for a refit. Therefore, it's unlikely that Discovery will be using the pathway drive at any point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It's certainly possible that Captain Burnham could receive assistance from a starship like the USS Voyager-J at some later point in Discovery season 5, but it's also possible that the pathway drive was just a tease of things to come in the now- canceled Star Trek: Discovery season 6 .

As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will pick up the baton in the 32nd century, however, making it the most likely candidate for a pathway drive demonstration . As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive. As the cadets learn how a pathway drive works, and how it differs from a more traditional warp drive, so too will Star Trek fans who tune into the YA-oriented show. Starfleet Academy leading the way with a new warp drive replacement would be a fitting way to continue the legacy of Star Trek: Discovery and its spore drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is looking to begin production in late summer 2024.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After being closed for over a hundred years, Starfleet Academy is reopening its doors to those who wish to pursue a career as Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of cadets as they come of age, and build friendships, rivalries, and romantic relationships while being threatened by a new adversary that could destroy the Academy and the Federation itself.

Why Star Trek Keeping Standard Warp Travel Is Best

The specifics of how the pathway drive works are still a mystery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's presumably rooted in traditional warp travel. The spore drive was an incredibly complicated method of travel that required specific calculations and a willing host to navigate the mycelial network . In "Red Directive", Stamets states that, with more time, he could have worked out the issues with navigation, but never got the chance. The grisly fate of the USS Glenn in Discovery season 1 revealed that the slightest miscalculation in spore drive navigation could have devastating consequences for the crew.

Presumably, the pathway drive is a means to achieve warp travel while using less dilithium, to reduce the Federation's reliance on it following the scarcity caused by the Burn. This is therefore a less risky proposition, which will be why Starfleet are now rolling it out following the USS Voyager-J's successful trial. While it may be disappointing for Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery , the pathway drive's potential to make warp travel safer and more sustainable should be something to celebrate.

History [ ]

The class prototype , the USS Prometheus , was launched from the Beta Antares Ship Yards in the Antares sector on stardate 50749.5 . At the time of its launch, the Prometheus was so highly classified that only four people in all of Starfleet were trained to operate the prototype.

Later that year, the prototype starship was hijacked and stolen by Romulan Tal Shiar operatives, in an attempt to take the starship back to Romulus for study. This plot was foiled after the EMH from the USS Voyager (NCC-74656) was unknowingly downloaded to the ship's computer from the Delta Quadrant . ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

A Prometheus -class starship made first contact with the Vau N'Akat sometime after 2384 . ( PRO : " Preludes ")

Alternate timeline [ ]

In an alternate timeline , vessels of the Prometheus -class were among the Federation fleet that engaged the forces of the Sphere-Builders during the Battle of Procyon V in the 26th century. ( ENT : " Azati Prime ")

Technical data [ ]

Propulsion system [ ].

The warp drive of the Prometheus -class made the ships of this class faster than any other starship in the fleet at the time in the mid 2370s . The warp drive was capable of maintaining speeds exceeding warp 9.9 . ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Defensive systems [ ]

The Prometheus -class was designed with an unprecedented level of automation, and, combined with its advanced tactical systems, was one of the most powerful combat ships in the Alpha Quadrant . The primary battle systems on board the Prometheus included regenerative shielding , ablative hull armor , phasers , and photon torpedoes .

Firing a photon torpedo

A unique feature included in the Prometheus design was the multi-vector assault mode , which allowed the ship to split into three semi-independent sections that could each deliver massive force against an enemy target. All three sections were warp-capable . In this mode, the Prometheus could easily disable a Nebula -class at warp , or a D'deridex -class on the field of battle. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ") While other starship classes had similar capabilities, such as the Galaxy -class with its saucer separation feature, generally the saucer section of such classes had no warp drive and limited weaponry. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " The Arsenal of Freedom ", " The Best of Both Worlds, Part II ")

Additional systems [ ]

In addition to standard automation systems, the Prometheus -class design also featured holoemitters on every deck , which allowed the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram (Mark II) to access all areas of the ship (most EMHs were confined to sickbay only).

Primary controls for the ventilation system were located in Jefferies tube 17, which was located five decks up from sickbay. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Interior design [ ]

Main bridge [ ].

Prometheus class bridge

View of the Prometheus -class starship's main bridge

The fact that the Prometheus -class was mainly designed for combat was reflected in the design of its bridge . The bridge was designed with efficiency in mind, providing the commanding officer with visual access to all major stations when seated in the command chair . Directly in front of the captain's chair , sunken down with three steps, was the location of the helm on the port side and another station to starboard , combined in one large console . The latter was used to activate multi-vector assault mode and assess the status of ship systems, among other tasks. Both officers shared an unobstructed view of the main viewscreen with the commanding officer . All other stations were mounted against the wall , running around the entire length of the room . Directly aft of the captain's chair was the master systems display , with ops and tactical stations to starboard and port, respectively. To the captain's left and right, beyond these stations, were doors that may have provided access to the turbolift system. Further forward still, on either side of the main view screen, were two more stations, which also faced away from the center of the bridge. The starboard one displayed the same graphics as a typical engineering station of the era and provided an alarm when a warp core breach was imminent. Such an accident could quickly be prevented using this station as well. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Sickbay [ ]

Prometheus class sickbay

Sickbays on the Prometheus-class contained a single surgical biobed and a spartan research area. The sickbays were stocked with the latest in medical technologies and were the first to test the EMH Mark II. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

Prometheus five ship design

An early rendering of the Prometheus splitting into five ships

The Prometheus -class was designed by Star Trek: Voyager senior illustrator Rick Sternbach and rendered as a CGI model by Foundation Imaging 's Adam "Mojo" Lebowitz and Brandon MacDougall . Though the script for "Message in a Bottle" originally called for the Prometheus to split into five ships, the producers decided this may be difficult to make work on screen, and trimmed it down to three. Very early in the design process, Sternbach decided on a four-nacelle design, so the engineering section could easily split along the horizontal axis, into what Sternbach's sketches labeled the "Upper Warp Hull (UWH)" and the "Lower Warp Hull (LWH)." ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , pp. 92-93)

What had started as a Voyager -style shuttlebay door was changed to an " Enterprise-1701 -refit set of door fans." The nacelles were intentionally reminiscent of the Sovereign -class , with additional inspiration from the X-29 and Su-37 jet aircraft . ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , p. 93)

A production comparison chart would list the Prometheus as 1,360 feet (414 meters ) in length. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 11 , p. 93) A length of 414 meters was also listed in Eden FX materials. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 24 , p. 54)

The Prometheus -class interiors were designed by Voyager production designer Richard James , using re-dressed portions of the re-created USS Excelsior bridge that James had made for " Flashback ", the USS Voyager sickbay, and a number of new sets. One year later, the bridge set went on to again be redressed, for the Nova -class USS Equinox .

Maximum speed [ ]

↑ Dialogue in "Message in a Bottle" suggests that warp 9.9, at which the Prometheus was travelling, was too fast for any other ship in Starfleet to catch up with before the ship crossed into the Neutral Zone . The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 649) suggests that a speed of warp 9.9 makes it " the fastest vessel in Starfleet. " The Star Trek: Starship Spotter (p. 69) lists the maximum speed as warp 9.99, which corresponds more closely with the idea of the Prometheus being the fastest ship in the fleet, since the Intrepid -class had been previously established as capable of warp 9.975.

The Star Trek: Starship Spotter (p. 69) lists the following details and specifications:

  • Dimensions: Length, 415 meters; beam, 170 meters; draft, 113 meters
  • Crew complement: 141 persons
  • Velocity: cruising speed, warp 9; maximum speed, warp 9.99
  • Standard mission: 1 year
  • Warp systems: Four LF-50 Mod 1 Advanced Linear Warp Drive Units, One LF-12X Mod 2 Compact Linear Warp Drive Unit
  • Weapons: Thirteen Type XII Collimated Phaser Arrays, Three Mk 95 Direct-Fire Photon Torpedo Tubes
  • Primary computer system: M-16 Bio-neural gel pack Isolinear III Processor
  • Embarked craft: two shuttlecraft, four shuttlepods

Apocrypha [ ]

In the Deep Space Nine relaunch series series of novels Avatar, Book One and Book Two , a Prometheus -class starship named USS Cerberus ( β ) served as Admiral William Ross ' personal flagship , replacing the USS Bellerophon .

In the game Star Trek Online , the class is categorized as an "advanced escort ", with derived classes named Cerberus ( β ), Hephaestus ( β ), and Phoenix ( β ). When the class was initially added to the game, it did not feature multi-vector assault mode. This was added at a later date via a "multi-vector assault module" console and also included an alternate ship configuration.

The relatively small size of the 'crew' aboard the ship could be compared to an oceanic vacation cruise ship, only instead of a two-week vacation, people are living there for years on end. And there's considerable variation - the Voyager ship with a ratio of 15 Decks to 141 crewmen, is far more efficent than the Galaxy-Class Flagship Enterprise.
