Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten
Even though spring isn’t for a few more weeks, I’ve already got all of my exciting spring trips booked, which means that I need to refresh my travel bag with new seasonal essentials, clothes, and gadgets. But as frequent jet-setters know, spring travel is never a one-fits-all experience. For example, I live in New York City , but I’ll be spending half of March in Sweden and the other half in Florida, and then I have a few weddings sprinkled in throughout the spring season, too. During each of these trips, I'll be experiencing varying climates, so that’s why I’m prioritizing versatile travel essentials that will make each visit a breeze.
If you’re also rethinking your travel bag contents before the new season begins, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m sharing everything that I’m eyeing for spring travel this year, complete with stain-fighting sticks and a buy-it-for-life rain coat to make my (and hopefully your) future trips stress-free. And even better, items start at just $8, so there’s really not a better time to build the perfect spring travel bag than now.
Apple AirTag 4-Pack
All of this upcoming travel leaves plenty of opportunities for my personal belongings and luggage to get lost, stolen, or misplaced, so I’m stocking up on Apple AirTags while they’re on sale for under $20 apiece, and I highly encourage that you to do the same. Attach one to your suitcase to keep a closer eye on your checked luggage, to your wallet to safeguard your cards, and your purse to protect your personal belongings (or all three).
Everlane Utility Barrel Pants
Barrel-style pants may just be the best trend of the season for travelers thanks to their easy-to-style look and incredibly comfortable fit. I am personally obsessed with this sustainably made and durable pair from Everlane and am excited to dress them up and down when I'm abroad. It also doesn’t hurt that they have incredibly deep pockets to hold onto my keys, phone, and Chapstick. I’m considering snagging a few more pairs in other colors, and suggest that you do the same.
Rerishom Store Portable Door Lock Set
You can really never be too careful, especially when you're staying in a hotel, Airbnb, or vacation rental. So as an extra line of defense, I’m planning on always traveling with these portable door locks , which come recommended by flight attendant Alexis Castroman ( @casflightattendant ) as a “great level of protection when staying in a hotel.” Each door lock is easy to set up, incredibly lightweight, and an effective way to keep you safe when you're catching some Zs.
iWalk Portable Charger
I’m trying to travel as lightly as possible this year, so I’m eyeing this sleek and compact portable charger that shoppers say “ doesn’t require a charging cable, charges so fast, is light as a feather, and is so easy to bring anywhere .” Really though, it’s no larger than a tube of Chapstick or lipstick yet is incredibly powerful and charges your devices with ease. Get it on sale for 20 percent off today by clipping the on-site coupon.
JBL Endurance Peak 3 Headphones
I love my JBL over-ear headphones , especially in the winter as makeshift earmuffs. But as the temperatures start to rise, I'll need something that's lightweight and easier to run around in. As a big JBL fan already, I’m shopping these wireless earbuds, which the brand notes offer up to 50 hours of playtime, for my springtime audio entertainment when I'm on the plane, at the gym, and beyond.
Tide To Go Stain Remover Stick Set
I’m an incredibly clumsy eater, which is why I always make sure to have a Tide To Go Stick handy in my travel purse. I go through them pretty quickly, so I'm planning on refreshing my stash with this set of three that's just $8. I’m also going to a few weddings and am prepared to be the savior of any mid-ceremony mishaps. They’re lightweight, incredibly effective, and absolute travel-musts in my opinion.
Fjallaven Kanken Mini Pack Backpack
And because, of course, I have to rep Sweden-based Fjallraven during my trip to Sweden, I’m eyeing this absolutely stunning bright green backpack ahead of my upcoming trip. I’m a longtime fan of the brand, and swear by its products to provide both function and fashion, so I’m definitely looking forward to sporting this mini bag with tons of useful pockets around town.
Touchland Hydrating Hand Sanitizer
I don’t know about you, but lately, all of my friends and family have been getting sick, so I’m taking extra precautions ahead of my trips to stay protected from germs. And as I've quickly learned, all hand sanitizers are not made equal – and some can actually be quite pungent and impractically packaged. Now, my hands-down favorite ones are these power mist sanitizing sprays from Touchland that not only fight germs, but are also made with good-for-you ingredients that moisturize your skin. Plus, its spray design ensures that there are no sticky messes or spills. Snag this set of three for just $30 — you won’t regret it.
Haus Labs PhD Lip Glaze
I’ll set a disclaimer by saying that, while yes, I’m a huge Lady Gaga fan, my love for Haus Labs' high-quality, better-for-you beauty products is just a coincidence. You may think that this wouldn’t be considered a travel essential, but for me it absolutely is. I’m always trying to look and feel my best wherever I am, and out of all of the lip products on the market right now, this product outperforms them with its hydrating and luxurious feel. Where other lip glosses can feel sticky, this one feels more like a nourishing balm that also happens to keep me looking fabulous — even if I’m sleep deprived.
Veken Packing Cubes Set
Packing cubes are year-round travel staples, and as part of my spring cleaning and refresh, I’m replacing my worn-out ones by stocking up with this on-sale Amazon set. They not only help you compress your belongings to make more room in your suitcase, but they also help you organize your clothes, toiletries, and shoes so you can stay on top of your travel bag. With as much traveling as I’m doing this season, I know for a fact that I’ll need this set of packing cubes on my side.
Anrabess Women’s Two-Piece Sweater Set
After reading a review from a shopper gushing that this adorable sweater set is “comfortable to wear for long trips and it doesn’t wrinkle,” I immediately added it to my cart. Sometimes, it’s hard to find comfortable clothes that work between seasons to keep you warm without overheating, and this breathable-yet-cozy sweater set seems to perfectly fit the bill and make the perfect travel outfit. Better yet, it’s on sale for $40 today.
Buff Merino Wool Beanie
I have a plethora of cold-weather hikes and camping trips planned in the next few weeks, so I’m stocking up on warm essentials to keep me extra toasty during them all. I recently tried this beanie from Buff, and was beyond impressed by its comfort, warmth, and fit. Even better, it's made with merino wool, which is moisture-wicking and odor-resistant for functional, longtime outdoor wearing.
Patagonia Women's Boulder Fork Rain Jacket
I recently became hooked on Reddit’s Buy It For Life subreddit , and read about how Patagonia is a widely trusted activewear brand for its durable outerwear and garments. And as I’m on my own personal journey in condensing my travel wardrobe into practical staples, this latest launch is going to be an essential as we enter the rainiest season of the year. It’s waterproof, breathable, and durable enough for anything on your itinerary. Buy this jacket, and it may just be the only one you’ll ever need to purchase.
Gola Classics Women's Tennis Mark Cox Sneakers
I’ve got a feeling that green is going to become the next "It" color of the season, so I’m shopping these top-rated and incredibly cute Gola sneakers to sport on the pickleball court, at the airport, and during any of my other spring plans. While white sneakers continue to be a closet staple of mine, the slight green hue adds an eye-catching touch to the wardrobe staple that makes it stand out just enough while still being incredibly versatile.
Comrad Cotton Crew Compression Socks
If you didn’t know, compression socks are incredibly useful for relieving pressure and ankle swelling on long-haul flights and during hikes. And while there are plenty of knee-high length pairs available, I found this on-sale set of crew-length compression socks from celebrity-loved brand Comrad that are easier to style and wear on a daily basis, and are especially beneficial for any and every outdoor adventure that you have planned this season.

Spring is arguably one of the most popular seasons to travel. There are dozens of reasons that travelers take off for vacation in the spring: colleges are on break, the weather is warming up, nature is re-emerging from hibernation, etc. If your clients are requesting spring travel, then familiarize yourself with the 2023 top spring travel destinations. Also, stay updated with other up-and-coming destinations on Sky Bird’s weekly blog !
Table of Contents
Top spring travel locations:, holland, netherlands.
The spring season is almost always associated with blooming flowers, and the best tulips are located in Holland. The Keukenhof Botanical Gardens boast over 7 million flower bulbs in their fields, with 800 different types of tulip varieties! The park is only open from late March to early May, so hurry up and book tickets for your clients before they sell out.
For travelers seeking faster transportation than an on-foot tour, bikin g around the city is the perfect option. Holland is one of the safest spots for cyclists in the country !
Another top feature of Holland is their world-famous windmills, and we recommend telling clients to stop by one for a taste of Dutch history and beautiful scenery. The windmills of Kinderdijk are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mills of Schiedam are the five largest windmills in the world (some over 40 ft high), and Zaanse Schans is over 250 years old with well over 600 mills.
Yoshinoyama, Japan
Dating back at least 300 years, Mount Yoshino has over 30,000 cherry blossom trees planted along the land. The traditional term for blooming cherry blossoms is Sakura and they’re a national symbol of renewal and hope! Your clients can board the Mt. Yoshino Ropeway to get a lift to the top of the mountain, all while passing over the groups of pink trees planted from the top to the bottom.
Because the Sakura season is so important to Japanese history and culture, there are tons of exciting festivals nearby to participate in. Sky Bird’s favorites are the Yokohama Cherry Blossom Festival, Osaka Cherry Blossom Festival, and our favorite the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival .
Also, not to be missed are the various shrines and temples, including the Kinpusenji Temple, Mikumari Shrine, and Chikurin-in Temple . After a long day of touring the temples, suggest your clients take a break in one of the outdoor hot springs — some even serve traditional sake!
Athens, Greece
With the arrival of spring in Athens, orange trees burst with colorful fruit and fill the air with citrusy fragrance. For clients looking for an idyllic evening on the island, book a sunset picnic on the hills or a culinary cooking class filled with the freshest Mediterranean cuisine.
Foodies can start their morning with the Athens Farmers Market in Bishop Park, and thrifters can discover antiques at Abnormal Bazaar hosted by Indie South.
We recommend informing your clients about the various spring holidays occurring on the island:
- March 25 th is Independence Day , equivalent to America’s 4 th of July, a major holiday celebrating Greece’s triumph over the Turks
- May 1 st is Labor Day and the Feast of the Flowers , where the country takes off from work to enjoy picnics and kite flying
- May 18 th is International Museum Day , where clients can get free entrance to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum.
Louisville, Kentucky
You’ve likely heard of the most popular ( and quickest ) spring sporting event in America — The Kentucky Derby ! The number of attendees is larger than the crowds at the Super Bowl, the World Series, and the NCAA Final Four. It’s a prestigious horse race occurring the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs Racetrack in central Louisville, Kentucky. Booking tickets to the Kentucky Derby for your client will ensure a solid commission for yourself!
The city also hosts the two-month-long Kentucky Derby Festival , with a hole-in-one golf contest, luncheons, marathon races, the Pegasus Parade, wine festivals, and more! If your clients are looking for slower-paced activities, then they can enjoy a walking tour of the largest collection of Victorian-era mansions in the Old Louisville Historic District .

27 of the Best Places to Visit in the USA in the Spring
02/16/2022 by Emily Becker Leave a Comment
Springtime can be a magical and refreshing time to travel. Maybe you’re coming out from winter hibernation for a quick road trip, or you’re finally able to break in those new hiking boots you were gifted for Christmas. Personally, I look forward to blooms and greenery after nature wakes up from her winter slumber. Everything feels fresh, new, and exciting.
Here are some of the best places to visit in the USA in the springtime in particular, counting down to my #1 favorite:
Table of Contents
29. Mystic Hot Springs, Utah
As one of Utah’s best secret places , if Mystic Hot Springs isn’t on your radar yet, it is about to be! This hippie compound-esque hot spring has old bathtubs that you can soak in, which is a pretty epic mix of rustic and luxuriousness.
Mystic Hot Springs is the springtime destination for you if you’re into getting off the beaten path. The closest town is Monroe, which is even a bit remote in itself. This is the perfect place to unplug, relax, and take in gorgeous sunset views in the comfort of a steamy natural hot spring.
28. Black Rock City, Nevada
Speaking of remote places to visit this spring, here’s Black Rock City. In one of the most remote deserts in the USA, this is where the annual Burning Man festival takes place each year. If you want to experience this incredible slice of wilderness without the festival crowds, head there in the spring and you’ll likely have the place to yourself for as far as you can see.

If you want to get further off the grid for your spring getaway, head to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to enjoy the northern wilderness. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Superior and tranquil hikes.

The Best Places to Travel in 2023
From Madrid to Montenegro, Turkey to Transylvania, Vienna to Venice...our curated list of the best places to visit now.
Your next trip should be:
Madrid, la maxima….
Because four new five-star hotels can't be wrong.
Madrid may not have the sheer beauty of Paris or the antiquity of Athens or Rome. Its appeal has long been what writer Julia Reed once called its “elegant conservatism”—and unmatched nightlife. (“In Madrid,” Hemingway said, “nobody goes to bed until they have killed the night.”) It’s still true, but these days there’s a new temblor de emoción , a flutter of emotion (the closest Spanish comes to the word excitement ). “Remember, in the 1980s, after Franco died, how Madrid was the place to be?” says Virginia Irurita, of Made in Spain and Portugal, who lives in Madrid. “With La Movida, the painters, Almodóvar? That’s how Madrileños feel now.”
The city’s cultural cachet (not that it needed more) is building: A fifth UNESCO World Heritage Site has been anointed (the tree-lined Paseo del Prado and the adjoining El Retiro, a 17th-century palace garden). Next summer Madrid’s Royal Palace (the largest in Europe) will open a new annex for the Museum of the Royal Collections. And the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum has not one but two blockbuster shows planned for 2023: Picasso and Lucian Freud.
On Our Radar Spain's Balearic islands just get better. Everyone's abuzz about the April opening in Majorca of the new Son Net , a 17th-century estate in a bucolic setting 15 minutes by car from Palma that has been restored and transformed into a 31-room hotel by the masterminds behind Andalucia's Finca Cortesin . Enough said.
Royal Romania…
Because the king of England will open his home to you.
The king of England’s real estate portfolio is worth billions. There is the verdant paradise at Highgrove and 192 acres of bucolic bliss at Llwynywermod in Wales. Now he has Sandringham and Balmoral, too. But where does a sovereign go to really unplug? Romania, apparently, where King Charles owns two homes in Transylvania—yes, of Dracula fame. One of them he turned into a center for traditional crafts; the other, his private country residence in Valea Zalanului , becomes a seven-room B&B when he isn’t around.
A grand pile this is not, and that is by design—all local antiques and textiles. No TV, no WiFi, just horseback rides, nature walks, and convivial dinners during which you might drop in this fun fact: Charles is a descendant of Vlad the Impaler (so named for his preferred method of execution), who inspired Bram Stoker’s tale about history’s most famous vampire. The Literary Maldives...
Because who says a tropical resort can't be the ultimate party school?
Sonu Shivdasani, the founder of Soneva resorts, was turning his properties into exemplars of environmental sustainability long before it was fashionable to do so. His latest stroke of genius: bringing the Jaipur Literary Festival to the lush, beach-ringed island of Kunfunadhoo, in Baa Atoll in the Maldives—home of Soneva Fushi .
The JLF in Jaipur attracts thousands of attendees and is streamed to 10 million viewers worldwide; at Soneva Fushi’s inaugural festival last May, there were 120 attendees, spread out over 10 days (minimum stay is four days). Which meant attendees had direct access to the 34 renowned writers and artists (including filmmaker Mira Nair, novelist André Aciman, and Oxford historian Peter Frankopan). We all resided in solitary splendor (Soneva Fushi has 64 private, butlered villas), but we had meals and gala dinners together (barefoot) as well as keynote lectures, panel discussions, and musical performances.
There were sunset champagne cruises to a sandbank, movie nights, and dancing. I left with new friends and a notebook full of ideas—about as vivifying as travel can get. JLF Soneva Fushi 2023 runs May 12–21.One speaker will be Priyamvada Natarajan, a professor in the departments of astronomy and physics at Yale whose specialty is the nature of dark matter and black holes. Just the thing to ponder in paradise. By Klara Glowczewska . To Book : Soneva.com
On Our Radar The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavara has launched a trainee marine biologist program for teenagers. Six full-day modules are offered (you can choose as many as you like), working with scientists studying such topics as manta rays, turtles, coral, and the secret lives of plankton.
A Scottish Surprise…
Because you'll like the fresh takes—even on haggis.
The second haggis came as a surprise. On my first night in Scotland, ordering chef Mark Greenaway’s elegant version of the country’s most famous (and often derided) dish seemed like a leap into the gastronomic deep end, something to try to get the full experience of the place. On the next night it was just because I liked it. That kind of reconsideration of classics is what’s most exciting about Scotland right now. Sure, castles, lochs, and misty mountains abound. But Glasgow and Edinburgh are sophisticated cities with extraordinary dining and cutting-edge culture around every corner. Last summer Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe celebrated its 75th anniversary with 3,300 performances by artists from 63 countries;at the Edinburgh International Festival, Gabriel Byrne premiered his one-man show, Walking with Ghosts , which recently moved to Broadway. On leafy St. Andrew Square, Gleneagles has opened its first urban property, Gleneagles Townhouse , with a member’s club and rooftop bar.
Dean Banks, the MasterChef veteran who runs fine-dining destinations including the Pompadour at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh , is quick to call out other new favorites, such as the Finnieston in Glasgow, which specializes in sustainable seafood, and Monachyle Mhor , the boutique Highlands hotel known for its “whisky safari.” “In Scotland,”Banks says, “we are kings of touching back to our traditions.” Luckily, the rest of us are able to as well. By Adam Rathe . To book a trip to Scotland : Jonathan Epstein, Jonathan@ celebratedexperiences.com
Italy Off-Season…
Because at the end of the day, no one comes to Italy for a suntan.
Last summer Italy was, let’s be frank, almost loved to death, with congested roads, swamped sights, and sluggish service from overworked staff. Our suggestion? A do-over, but not in summer. “We are huge believers in low-season travel here,” says Andrea Grisdale, the Como-based founder of IC Bellagio . “It’s a totally different experience, and we are actively encouraging it.” No, you will not be forced to pitch a tent. For the first time, a number of hotels that used to shutter as soon as summer ended are pushing back closures. In Lake Como, the classic Villa d’Este is staying open until early January and reopening in March, as is the beautiful new Passalacqua .
Following suit in Puglia is the wildly pretty Borgo Egnazia . On the Amalfi Coast, Monastero Santa Rosa stayed open into November in 2022 and is considering December in 2023. There will be more. “After a year like this one,” says Elisa Pozzoli, of Essence of Italy, “hotels are changing their mentality. And Venice in January or February is magical. You’re alone, in a ghost city.”
Something else might help ease the travails of overtourism: a handful of new five-star hotels available year-round. Six Senses Rome (GM Francesca Tozzi comes from Capri’s Tiberio Palace) opens in the spring in a 15th-century palazzo a block from the Galleria Doria Pamphilj. In Milan the 73-suite Portrait Milano , a first foray there from the Ferragamo family, has just opened on Corso Venezia, close to the fashion district but not in the thick of it. Casa Baglioni Milano , a 30-room hotel with an interior that nods to Italy’s Modernist dolce vita era, is in the heart of the city’s artsy, “local” Brera district. Both offer a way to sidestep the visitor surge, even during Fashion Week. As for the summer? Grisdale cannot be more emphatic: “We are about to enter a new era. The famous summer tradition is on its way out. No one comes to Italy for a suntan, anyway. And do you know how amazing this country is with few tourists around?” By Mark Ellwood . To book a trip to Italy : Andrea Grisdale, andrea@ icbellagio.com
On Our Radar Hotel La Palma , Capri’s first hotel, built in 1822 and steps from the famous Piazzetta, is opening in July after a major renovation as the Oetker Collection’s first Masterpiece Hotel in Italy. One of many highlights: a private beach club at the Marina Piccola. (No word yet, though, on an extended season.)
Your Next Trip Should Be:
Africa in a private villa….
Because, let's face it, having the bush all to yourself is better.
OL JOGI , KENYA.
A 58,000-acre onetime cattle ranch on the Laikipia Plateau is now a private conservancy with serious game viewing. Owned by the art-dealing Wildenstein family, Ol Jogi can be booked for up to 22 people. Don’t let the thatched-hut-style exterior fool you: Inside it’s over-the-top French château luxury. Great perk: the underground hide, reached through a tunnel, which overlooks a rhino-luring salt lick.
SINGITA’S MALILANGWE HOUSE , ZIMBABWE.
This 5-bedroom villa in the 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve is close enough to Singita’s Pamushana Lodge that you can walk to the main camp, but it’s isolated on a hilltop, with gorgeous views of huge boulders, red soil, and golden msasa trees. On offer: classic game drives as well as ancient cave rock art sites and “water safaris” to see fish eagles, hippos, and crocodiles.
COTTARS BUSH VILLA , KENYA.
Charles Cottar set up his safari business in the Mara back in 1919. Great-grandson Calvin and his wife Louise now run it, retro associations intact: canvas, Persian rugs, and dark wood furniture. The new 5-bedroom bush villa, built entirely by hand, sits on a hill like an old farmhouse, but it has all mod cons, including an 82-foot-long pool. Ask to be guided by the all-female ranger team, the only such in the Mara.
FARMHOUSE AT THE FARMSTEAD , SOUTH AFRICA.
Onetime fashion exec Liz Biden converted her country getaway in Greater Kruger into the Royal Malewane lodge 23 years ago and has since expanded her footprint. The nearby Farmstead now has a stand-alone 7,000-square-foot villa with a kids suite and a pool that sticks out right into the bush. Her background is evident in the exuberant decor; even the laundry comes packaged in scarlet netting, tied with a big red bow. Royal Malewane’s guides are standouts: Several have earned the title master tracker, a rarity in safari.
CHEETAH PLAINS, SOUTH AFRICA.
These three ultramodern 4-bedroom homes (booked individually or together) are remarkable for their especially game-rich location in private Sabi Sand reserve, adjacent to unfenced Kruger National Park. (The near-silent electric 4X4s help too.) As for the amenities: Each comes with a heated pool, wine gallery, chef, sommelier, and full-time spa therapist.
KATAZA HOUSE, SINGITA KWITONDA , RWANDA.
This 4-bedroom villa is the only luxe safari house close to Volcanoes National Park, home of the mountain gorillas. Building materials and decor were procured locally; there are ebonized tables, eucalyptus wood screens, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking three huge volcanoes. Deborah Calmeyer of Roar Africa calls it a “spiritual experience like nowhere else in Africa.” By Mark Ellwood. To book any of the above African villas : Deborah Calmeyer, deb@ roarafrica.com
La Belle Bourgogne…
Because of the wine, bien sur. And some fine new bolt holes.
They don’t call parts of Burgundy the Côte d’Or just for its fall foliage. “Anyone interested in wine will eventually end up here,” states Dennis Sherman, a 40-year resident who runs a wine brokerage business near Beaune. “It’s the simplicity of the single grape variety with the complexity of the soil—the wine has incredible depth and substance.” But ending up here hasn’t been all that easy: The higher-end accommodations have long been largely on barges on the region’s waterways. Now, however, two rival ultraluxe hoteliers are opening properties.
American expats Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly who run the five-star Royal Champagne hotel in that region, are reinventing the Clos de la Commarainen estate as a 23-room hotel in a 12th-century château (connected to the dukes of Burgundy) and anchored by its 10 acres of Pommard Premier Cru. It will form the basis of a revival of winemaking here, something that last took place 20 years ago. Arriving at the end of 2023 is COMO Le Montrachet , an albergo diffuso–style hotel nestled around a charming village square a few miles south of Beaune (Christina Ong’s fourth European site).
The lodging shortage solved, another issue persists. (Great pleasures are often hard won.) And that is access to Burgundy’s prized small-batch production. According to Philip Haslett, of Kairos , who organizes trips throughout France, “The winemakers here aren’t as visitor-ready as those in Champagne or even Bordeaux. The farmers are not turning up in a BMW—they’re the real deal, so it doesn’t matter who you are, because they don’t have anything extra to sell.”
Which is why Haslett works with guides who have deep roots here, such as Youri Lebault of Bourgogne Gold Tour, who specializes in opening near-impossible cellar doors (guiding is essential due to Burgundy’s fragmented, jigsaw-like terroir, which is carved into patches known as climats ). “Yesterday,” he said, “I ended my two-day wine tour in a private cellar in the Côte de Beaune, alone with my clients, smelling the wine from the barrel and tasting it with a pipette.” By Mark Ellwood. To book a trip top France : Philip Haslett, Philip @ kairos-travel.com
Your next trip should be...
Yes, panama….
Because it's about to pop and it has three attractions no other country in Central America or the Caribbean can claim.
1. The Old Town
One of the best-restored and most delightful historic districts in the region, dating back to 1673, with a sophisticated new hotel, La Compañia (a hot spot for locals and international travelers), and a real foodie scene: Peruvian-Panamanian, French-Panamanian, patisseries, and coffee and cigar bars.
2. The Canal
Human ingenuity is on full display along this 40-mile engineering marvel, which connects the Atlantic with the Pacific and divides North and South America. A must day trip from the Old Town, it’s also a good jumping-off point for hikes in the Anton Valley and visits to the Emberá indigenous community.
Nayara’s Bocas del Toro , in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, is a luxe perch from which to explore Panama’s astonishing biodiversity. Prep at the Frank Gehry–designed biodiversity museum in Panama City. By Michael Clinton . To book a trip to Panama : Pierre Gedeon, pierre@ costa-adventures.com
On Our Radar: An environmentally minded billionaire owner, Louis Bacon, has turned an archipelago of 14 islands off Panama’s Pacific coast into an a all-inclusive luxe retreat, Isla Secas . It guarantees total privacy (it sleeps just 24), real adventure, and untouched nature. Thirteen of the islands will remain undeveloped.
A Turkish Delight…
Because jetting to Bodrum is swell, but sailing to Kaunos in a gulet is better.
A couple of years ago Emily Morrison, a former New Orleans commodities trader, visited Turkey for the first time, suntanning in Bodrum and hot-air-ballooning over Cappadocia like a latter-day Jules Verne. At the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, that tortuous labyrinth from the 15th century, she had a career epiphany while sorting through textiles, so she left her job and started a lifestyle brand, Elysian by Emily Morrison , back home, collaborating with Turkish artisans on decorative wares, footwear, and clothing. “What I experienced was the people of Turkey,” she says. “The hospitality, the craftsmanship, the culture.”
Now she returns several times a year. And Morrison’s not alone: American travel to Turkey in the first half of 2022 skyrocketed 77 percent over the same period in 2019, according to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Post-pandemic, the number is poised to climb in 2023, as the country marks its 100th anniversary as a republic.
“It took many years, but things have definitely changed,” says Karen Fedorko Sefer, founder of Sea Song Tours , who arrived in Turkey in 1998 and organized Morrison’s original visit. “The key was developing infrastructure to accommodate demanding luxury travelers.” Turkish Airlines invested in U.S. hubs (three daily flights out of JFK, two from LAX), and elite lodgings boomed: A Four Seasons and a Mandarin Oriental opened on the Bosporus, followed by the newly restored Four Seasons in historic Sultanahmet. The Peninsula Istanbul and Japan’s Okura Spa & Resort Cappadocia are expected in 2023.
And it’s not just cities that are thriving: Thanks to Turkish Airlines’ vast network of domestic flights, jetsetters are discovering the cradle of civilization in Asia Minor. Though why go by air to the ruins of Kaunos or the shipwrecks of Monastir Bay when a gulet is an option. A very posh option. Turkish sailing yachts are, Sefer says, “second to none.” By Erik Maza .
To book a trip to Turkey: Karen Fedorko Safer, fedorko@ seasong.com
On Our Radar: This past October, Michelin Guides published its first list of 53 Istanbul restaurants . Why it took this long, given the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman epicurean traditions, is a mystery. But never mind: It’s a whole new impetus to visit. The star of the list, with two stars, is Turk Fatih Tutak .
A Montenegro Odyssey…
Because it's the Med without the crowds.
Byron called the 182-mile stretch of Montenegro’s Adriatic coast “the most beautiful encounter between land and sea.” No wonder. Riven with fjords, dotted with tiny islands and ancient towns (such as Kotor, Budva, and Perast), and lined with 45 miles of beach, the little country has been quietly turning into a niche destination for yachting holidays, a Croatia without the crowds. “It’s Norway, but it’s warm!” proclaims Paola Scalabrino, a charter specialist with Monaco-based Yachtzoo . “And it’s for people who want beautiful anchorages but don’t need to be in port every night, out clubbing.” If you want a land perch, One&Only Portonovi , near a new marina, is the sole five-star resort option (ever since the Aman Sveti Stefan closed amid a local controversy over beach rights). And, opening this spring, in an 1850s Austro-Hungarian fortress, is the boutiquey 32-room Mamula Island , which comes with a fleet of boats you can use on demand. By Mark Ellwood . A Viennese Waltz...
Because the new museums are magnificent and you get to pack your dancing shoes.
Mention Vienna and what comes to mind are pastries and paintings, sacher-torte and Schiele—a place worth a pit stop between Prague and Budapest. But the grand onetime imperial capital is starting to shed its gilded cobwebbiness. A permanent home has just opened for the Austrian billionaire Heidi Goëss-Horten ’s 700-strong collection —of Picassos, Chagalls, Basquiats, Warhols, Richters, and Baselitzes. The two-year-old Albertina Modern , Austria’s answer to the Tate , will showcase in spring 2023 American artist Alex Katz in a major retrospective.
On the hotel front, the 150-year-old Sacher has some competition. Rosewood Vienna opened last summer in a former bank in the heart of the city’s pedestrian district. The onetime Ring Hotel, on the Ringstrasse, will reopen in early 2023 as the Amauris Vienna . The locally owned and operated Leo Grand is a pretty boutique spot a few steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral. And a Mandarin Oriental is coming as well (to an Art Nouveau building on Riemergasse).
But there’s one tradition that Gwen Kozlowski, president of Exeter International , is keen to see preserved: the balls. “They are truly like nowhere else, and superformal.” Skip the ones around New Year’s and focus on the distinctly Viennese ones at Lent. The most prestigious are the Opera and Philharmonic balls. “They’re hard to wrangle tickets for, but if you’re serious, we can usually make it happen.” By Mark Ellwood. A Cool Cruise…
Because swanning around on a gorgeous ship is as good as it gets.
A JAMES BOND–IAN FANTASY (ON SCENIC ECLIPSE ).
The first ultraluxe expedition ship, Scenic Eclipse, from the Australian brand Scenic, turned heads for its megayacht style and 007-esque toys. Now comes Scenic Eclipse II . Both will go to the Arctic and Antarctic, but in 2023 Eclipse II will also visit Euro yachtie hangouts (Capri, Hvar, Ibiza, and more) and explore the Pacific—the gorges of Australia’s Kim- berley, Indonesia’s Spice Islands, and Raja Ampat.
AN ARCTIC ADVENTURE (ON COMMANDANT CHARCOT ).
Until now, reaching the North Pole has never been a breeze. But next summer Ponant’s hybrid-powered icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot , will make four 15-night trips there. Outside is a silent world of polar bears and pack ice; onboard it’s all expedition-chic (an Alain Ducasse restaurant, a dernier-cri spa, floor-to-ceiling windows). The best part: knowing you’re farther north than anyone else on earth.
AN ART TOUR OF THE BALTIC (ON VIKING OCEAN ).
Without St. Petersburg, a cruise around the Baltic might feel like seeing Athens without the Acropolis. Not so. Scandi-chic Viking has a fix for art lovers next summer: a series of 14-night ocean sailings between Bergen and Stockholm, with guided tours of major museums and works of architecture. One highlight: a private viewing in Oslo of Edvard Munch’s haunti ng masterpiece The Scream . By Sue Bryant. To book a cruise : Ashton Palmer, Ashton@ expeditiontrips.com ; Tom Baker, Tom.Baker@ cruisecenter.com ; Mary Jean Tully, travel@ tullyluxurytravel.com
On Our Radar : Other lines are plying the Baltic too: Silversea’s 14-night roundtrip from Copenhagen stops in Stockholm, Tallinn, Helsinki, and Gdansk. Regent Seven Seas’ 10-night cruise sails June 30 from Copenhagen to Stockholm, with stops in Berlin, Gdansk, Tallinn, Helsinki, and Art Nouveau–rich Riga.

Everyone can use some good rest and relaxation, and we're more than looking forward to getting away for a stress-free spring vacay this year.

The Sweet Spot for Saving Around 15% on Flights to Summer’s Trending Destinations is 21 to 60 Days Out
Spring is in the air, but the clock is ticking for travelers to lock in summer travel plans. According to the Expedia® Summer Travel Outlook, released today, searches for summer trips are up year-over-year for flights and lodging, 1 and the window is open now to save on summer airfare. Top destinations tempting U.S. travelers include major cities like New York and London, as well as beach destinations like Cancun and Honolulu.
France is also a summer hotspot as Paris and surrounding areas prepare to host a major global sports event in late July. Expedia’s data reveals a massive surge in searches for accommodations during these dates in cities including Yvelines (+520%), Lyon (+310%) and Marseille (+200%). 2
To help travelers plan for what’s shaping up to be a busy summer travel season, Expedia’s Summer Travel Outlook uncovers crucial tips, including:
- Book summer flights 21 to 60 days out. Last year, travelers booking during this window saved around 15% for domestic and international travel. 3 That means the window to save on Memorial Day Weekend travel will close by May 2.
- Depart on a Monday (international flights) or Tuesday (domestic flights). Travelers saved around 15% compared to those that departed on Thursday and Friday. 3
- Fly during mid-to-late August. It’s less busy and can yield savings of up to $265 on roundtrip tickets compared to the last week of June when average fares peak. 3
- The Fourth of July is on Thursday, and the week leading up to the holiday is expected to be the busiest time to fly this summer. 3
“The sweet spot for booking your summer trip is right around the corner, but there’s still a bit of time to figure out your vacation plans and lock in those flights at a great rate,” says Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations. “The cheat sheet is easy this year — book one to two months out and save around 15%, whether you’re taking the family to the beach in Florida or summering in Paris.”
Read the full Expedia Summer Travel Outlook below, which includes top destinations and tips for saving on airfare and hotels.
Expedia Summer Travel Outlook
When to Book Summer Travel 3
According to Expedia historic flight data, the sweet spot for booking summer flights is between 21 and 60 days ahead of departure, whether you’re headed abroad or staying stateside. That means the clock is already ticking with summer officially kicking off on Memorial Day, currently just over six weeks away.
- Average Sweet Spot Savings: Up to 15% on airfare
- Worst Time to Book: Less than a week out for domestic travel or more than 90 days out for international travel (travelers paid 15% more than average during these windows).
Don’t want to wait? Book when you’re ready and use Expedia’s Price Drop Protection,* which provides an automatic refund if the flight fare decreases on Expedia after booking. Available for purchase and on the app, it’s free for Gold and Platinum One Key members on eligible bookings who will receive any refund in OneKeyCash automatically.
Destination Insights 1
Expedia’s search data highlights New York and London as the most popular domestic destinations overall for summer.
Meanwhile, significant year-over-year surges are also evident in major international cities across Europe and Asia, along with sought-after beach locales in Mexico and the Caribbean. Japan continues its reign as a top year-round destination for U.S. travelers, with Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto appearing on the list of fastest-growing cities for summer.
Best and Busiest Times to Travel This Summer 3
Flexibility is critical, and sidestepping the busiest travel days can offer cost and time savings. Based on 2023 flight demand, late June tends to be the busiest time to fly and the most expensive. Meanwhile, August boasts the lightest crowds and cheapest average ticket prices of the season.
The Fridays and Saturdays before July Fourth and Labor Day are historically among the busiest for air travel during the summer months, as travelers aim to make the most of office closures and paid holidays. July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, so travelers can expect busier roads and airports both the weekend before and the day before the holiday.
- Busiest Travel Dates: Last week of June; June 29 and July 3 (Saturday and day before July Fourth holiday); August 30 (Friday before Labor Day)
- Lightest Travel Dates: Last week of August
Cheapest Day of the Week to Fly 3
According to Expedia data, Fridays are the busiest day at the airport during the summer months, while Tuesdays are the lightest. Day of the week also matters when it comes to savings; for domestic flights, depart on a Tuesday instead of a Friday to save around 15%, and on Monday instead of Thursday for international flights.
Make the Most of Summer Holiday Weekends 3
These are some of the best places to fly for under $500 during summer’s long weekends, based on historical flight data.
Summer in Paris
Paris is among the most popular international destinations for U.S. travelers this year, with Paris as one of the top destinations all up. During late July through mid-August, the City of Lights and surrounding areas are attracting even more interest as it prepares to host a major global sports event. Expedia’s data reveals a massive surge in searches for accommodations during these dates in cities including Yvelines (+520%), Lyon (+310%) and Marseille (+200%). 2
With Paris attracting a surge of summer visitors, accommodation rates have spiked compared to last year. To save on a place to stay, travelers should explore neighboring cities that are still well-connected by train to various competition venues:
- Best for lower rates compared to Paris City Center: Rueil-Malmaison, Chatou, and Nanterre.
- Best for stays near the Stade de France: Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported
B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.
Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.
Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.
Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.
Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.
The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.
Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."
More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.
Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.
The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."
The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.
On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.
The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.
There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Heathrow Border Force and refueling worker strikes
When: april 29-may 2, may 3-18 and may 4-6.
First, it was on, then it was off. Now, it's back on again: Border Force workers — the staff members who carry out immigration controls and passport checks — based at London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) are set to walk out between April 29 and May 2. The four-day strike action has the potential to cause serious disruption to international flights.
In addition to those dates, there will be a "work to rule" strike between May 3 and 18, when workers will only carry out essential tasks.
The strike involves members of the Public and Commercial Services Union, with 90% of its members voting in favor of the walkouts. The strike is over disputes regarding the U.K. government's planned changes to schedules and shift patterns.
Adding further woe at Heathrow, about 50 refueling workers will also stage a 72-hour strike to protest benefit cuts between May 4 and 6.
Catering workers for EasyJet and Tui at Gatwick Airport
When: april 26-29, may 3-6 and may 10-13.
Around 100 Dnata catering staff, including drivers and warehouse workers, will walk out on three consecutive weekends in April and May. The walkouts will affect services on EasyJet and Tui Airways flights from London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
The strikes — which involve about 100 workers — are due to take place April 26-29, May 3-6 and May 10-13.

Air traffic controller strike in France
Air traffic controllers at French airports are threatening to strike April 25. While the strike could be averted, the clock is ticking; the staff only has until April 23 to call off the strike. If the strike goes ahead, it could disrupt up to 70% of flights arriving at the country's major airports and passing through French airspace.
France transport strike notice
When: feb. 5 to sept. 9.
Staff members employed by the state-owned Ile-de-France bus and metro network commenced a seven-month strike notice period in early February over pay. If they don't come to an agreement during this period, the strikes could likely take place during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Bottom line
One thing worth remembering about strikes is that nothing is certain, and it's always possible that unions and employers will reach a deal.
However, the current economy can be challenging. Workers are struggling through the deepening cost of living, and travel companies are desperate to appease shareholders. The pressures on both sides of the fence seem unlikely to evaporate anytime soon.
The chances of more strikes across the travel sector are high. Keep an eye on these dates and plan accordingly.

Nato supports Bosnia’s territorial integrity and is concerned by “malign foreign interference,” including by Russia , in the volatile Balkans region that went through a devastating war in the 1990s, Nato’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg , has said.
Sarajevo is the first stop on Stoltenberg’s tour of western Balkan countries that will also include Kosovo, Serbia and North Macedonia, the Associated Press reports.
“The Allies strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Stoltenberg told reporters. “We are concerned by the secessionist and divisive rhetoric as well as malign foreign interference, including Russia.”
There are widespread fears that Russia is trying to destabilise Bosnia and the rest of the region and shift at least some world attention from its war in Ukraine .
Morning summary
The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kyiv on Monday for a visit. “I’m here today to deliver an important message: the United States will continue to stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom against Russia’s aggression, both now and into the future.”
Two people were killed early on Monday after Russian forces shelled a parking lot in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, authorities said. Regional prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation into the artillery strike, which occurred at about 9am (7am GMT) and injured one other person, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.
A Ukrainian soldier and a woman have died after a grenade exploded in a Kyiv apartment, police in the Ukrainian capital have said, but the cause of the blast, which injured a second man, was not immediately clear. Explosives technicians and investigators were working at the scene of Sunday’s explosion in the Dniprovskiy district, Kyiv police said in a statement.
The Ukrainian army said it had pushed back Russian forces “three to eight kilometres” from the banks of the Dnipro River, which if confirmed would be the first meaningful advance by Kyiv’s forces months into a disappointing counteroffensive . Ukrainian and Russian forces have been entrenched on opposite sides of the vast waterway in the southern Kherson region for more than a year, after Russia withdrew its troops from the western bank last November.
A Ukrainian teenager who was taken to Russia from the occupied city of Mariupol during the war and prevented from leaving earlier this year has returned to Ukraine . Bohdan Yermokhin, who turned 18 on Sunday, appealed to Zelenskiy this month to help bring him back to Ukraine. “I believed I would be in Ukraine, but not on this day,” Yermokhin told Reuters while eating at a petrol station after crossing the border.
About 3,000 mostly Ukrainian trucks, including those carrying fuel and humanitarian aid, were stuck on the Polish side of the border on Sunday due to a more than 10-day blockade by Polish truckers, Ukrainian authorities said . Polish truckers earlier this month blocked roads to three border crossings with Ukraine to protest against what they see as government inaction over a loss of business to foreign competitors since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Air defence units in Moscow intercepted a drone targeting the city late Sunday, mayor Sergei Sobyanin said . Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said units in the Elektrostal district in the capital’s east had intercepted the drone. No casualties or damage were initially reported. Air defences had also thwarted a drone attack on the Russian capital overnight to Sunday, authorities said earlier.
Russia launched 20 Iranian-made Shahed drones targeting Kyiv and the Cherkasy and Poltava regions overnight into Sunday, the Ukrainian military said, of which 15 were shot down . The overnight strikes on Kyiv were the second attack on the Ukrainian capital in 48 hours, said the city’s military administration spokesperson, Serhii Popko.
Five people including a three-year-old girl were injured in Russian artillery shelling of Kherson on Sunday morning, the Ukrainian interior minister, Ihor Klymenko , said . “All of them sustained shrapnel wounds. The child and the grandmother were walking in the yard. Enemy artillery hit them near the entrance,” Klymenko said on the Telegram messaging app.
The pro-war Russian nationalist Igor Girkin , who is in custody awaiting trial for inciting extremism, said he wanted to run for president even though he understood the March election would be a “sham” with the winner already clear . Girkin, who is also known by the alias Igor Strelkov, has repeatedly said Russia faces revolution and even civil war unless President Vladimir Putin’s military top brass fight the war in Ukraine more effectively. A former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer who helped Russia to annex Crimea in 2014 and then to organise pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, Girkin said before his arrest that he and his supporters were entering politics.
The Kremlin, facing the prospect of a European Union ban on imports of Russian diamonds, said on Monday that EU sanctions tended to have a “boomerang effect” on those who applied them, Reuters reports.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was commenting on a proposed EU ban on diamond imports from Russia as part of a new sanctions package against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine .
Russia is the world’s biggest producer of rough diamonds by volume. Peskov told reporters such a move had been anticipated for a long time, but was likely to backfire.
“As a rule, it turns out that a boomerang effect is partially triggered: the interests of the Europeans themselves suffer. So far, we have been able to find ways to minimise the negative consequences of sanctions,” he said.
EU diplomatic sources said last week the proposal under discussion was to ban direct diamond imports from Russia from 1 January and from March to implement a traceability mechanism that would prevent imports of Russian gems processed in third countries.
The Kremlin said on Monday that president Vladimir Putin will set out Russia’s view of what it sees as the “deeply unstable world situation” when he addresses an upcoming virtual G20 summit.
Russian state TV presenter Pavel Zarubin said on his Telegram channel on Sunday that it would be the “first event in a long time” including both Putin and western leaders.
According to the state RIA news agency, the G20 virtual summit will be held on Wednesday.
The Kremlin said on Monday it regretted Finland’s decision to shut crossings on its border with Russia , saying it reflected Helsinki’s adoption of an anti-Russian stance, Reuters reports.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov , speaking at a regular news briefing, also rejected Finland’s accusation that Russia is deliberately pushing illegal migrants towards the border and said that Russian border guards were following all instructions.
Finland, a member of the European Union and – from this year – also of the Nato military alliance, closed four crossings on its border with Russia on Saturday as Helsinki seeks to halt a flow of asylum seekers it says was instigated by Moscow.
The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrives in Kyiv on Monday morning.
Two killed by Russian shelling in Kherson, Ukrainian authorities say
Reuters reports that two people were killed early on Monday after Russian forces shelled a parking lot in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, authorities said.
Regional prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation into the artillery strike, which occurred at about 9am (7am GMT) and injured one other person, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.
The Kherson governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said the two dead were drivers for a private transport business.
Images posted on Telegram showed firefighters dousing cars that had been blasted apart, one day after a separate strike on the city wounded five people, including a three-year-old girl.
Russian forces have regularly shelled Kherson from across the Dnipro River since the regional capital was reoccupied by Ukrainian troops last November.
Ukraine said last week it had secured a foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnipro and that its troops were trying to push Russian forces further back.
US defence secretary visits Kyiv
The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kyiv on Monday for a visit, he said on the X social media platform, Reuters reports.
“I’m here today to deliver an important message: the United States will continue to stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom against Russia’s aggression, both now and into the future.”
The visit comes amid increasing division over Ukraine aid in the US legislature. A joint Ukraine-US military industry conference in Washington is due to take place next month.
That event, due to be held on 6-7 December, is intended to boost Ukraine’s domestic arms production as its fight against a full-scale Russian invasion nears the two-year mark.
Reuters reports that a Japanese delegation led by senior industry and foreign ministry officials and including business representatives is visiting Ukraine on Monday for talks ahead of a reconstruction conference that Japan will host, the industry ministry said.
Japan, which has been supporting Ukraine with funds and by accepting refugees since Russia invaded in February 2022, has also been promoting support for Ukraine at the level of the G7, which Japan chairs this year.
Kazuchika Iwata , the state minister of economy, trade and industry (METI), and the state minister for foreign affairs Kiyoto Tsuji , are visiting together with representatives of Japan companies, METI said in a statement.
In Kyiv, the delegation, which includes members of Keidanren, Japan’s biggest business lobby, in charge of a committee on Ukraine’s reconstruction, plans talks with the prime minister, Denys Shmyhal , government officials and companies.
Shmyhal said this month Ukraine would need budget support of about $42bn this year and next year to plug a massive deficit and aid reconstruction from the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.
METI said the visit was an opportunity to hear about Ukraine’s needs and to discuss specific projects and accelerate public and private efforts to help.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy – who visited Japan in May during a G7 summit – and the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, agreed this month to hold a Japan-Ukraine Conference for promotion of Economic Reconstruction in Tokyo on 19 February.

The news came as Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed the commander of the military’s medical forces , Maj Gen Tetiana Ostashchenko, and said “new priorities had been set” in the operations of Ukraine’s military after a meeting with the defence minister, Rustem Umerov.
“There is little time left to wait for results. Quick action is needed for forthcoming changes,” the Ukrainian president said in his evening video address.
