John Mayer Extends First-Ever Solo Acoustic Tour

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Earlier this month, John Mayer embarked on his first-ever solo acoustic tour. He’s a month into now and already craving more. On Monday, the singer announced a second North American leg adding 17 new dates to the initial 19.

“As a dear friend once told me, “never block a blessing.” Something very special is happening out here and I want to keep it going – It’s too good for my soul. Thank you for making it such an incredible run so far…,” Mayer wrote on social media.

The new dates pick up on Oct. 3 at Madison Square Garden and extend through Nov. 10 with a final show in Los Angeles. JP Saxe will join for support on the new stretch making stops in Boston, Tampa, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and more. Mayer also promises that European dates are on the way.

General sale for the new dates begins Friday, March 31 at 9 a.m. local time.

The solo tour marks the first time in Mayer’s 20-year career that he’s hit the road without accompaniment. Each gig will feature full acoustic sets from Mayer, as well as “special performances” on electric guitar and piano.

John Mayer Is Heading Out on a Solo Acoustic Tour — 'Just Like Those Early Days'

"I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone. A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I'd feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again," the musician wrote

John Mayer is taking it back to basics.

The Grammy-winning guitarist announced Thursday that he'll be embarking on a solo acoustic tour this spring, hitting arenas around the country with only acoustic and electric guitars and a piano to accompany him. Kicking off March 11 in Newark, New Jersey, the tour will make another 18 stops before it ends in Los Angeles, California on April 14.

"I'm going on a solo arena tour," the singer-songwriter, 45, wrote on Instagram . "I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone. A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I'd feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days. It took a couple of decades, but I feel it now. I'll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven't heard yet that I'll be road testing — all on acoustic, electric, and piano."

He added, "Hope to see you there…John."

The musician will be joined by JP Saxe, Joy Oladokun and Alec Benjamin on various dates of the run.

Though Mayer's debut studio album, 2001's Room for Squares , was by and large an acoustic affair, followups Heavier Things and Continuum leaned considerably into electric guitar. He has consistently toured with a full band in the years since, though he'll occasionally play an acoustic show — both accidentally and on purpose .

The tour comes after Mayer spent the fall in the studio , saying in October that "I love touring and will continue to play live shows, but in staying open to what's driving me creatively, it felt like making more music was the most inspired feeling I had. ... I've just got more songs to make. I'm having the time of my life writing and recording."

In addition to his solo work, the guitarist will reunite the John Mayer Trio on March 9, as they play Love Rocks NYC to benefit God's Love We Deliver .

Mayer also recently returned from Mexico following Playing in the Sand, Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company 's annual festival, and will join Bob Weir and friends again later this year for their final tour, kicking off May 19.

Tickets for Mayer's arena tour go on sale to the general public on Friday, Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. Fans can also visit johnmayer.com to sign up for the presale, which provides access starting Wednesday, Feb. 1.

John Mayer is hitting the road on his first-ever solo acoustic arena tour, bringing hits both new and old to fans across North America.

On Thursday (January 26), the "New Light" singer announced his upcoming Spring tour where he plans to get back to his roots of being on stage with just a mic and guitar, with focus on the musician's acoustic guitar work as well as special performances on piano and electric guitar, per USA Today . The 19-city tour will also feature special guests Lizzy McAlpine and Alec Benjamin , as well as another to be announced, in select cities.

"I began my career on stage with only a guitar and a microphone," he said. "A lot has changed since then, but I knew one day I'd feel it in my heart to do an entire run of shows on my own again, just like those early days. It took a couple of decades, but I feel it now."

Fans will get to hear some of his most popular songs from throughout his career plus some newer tunes that he'll be "testing" while on the road.

"I'll be playing old songs. Newer songs. Songs you haven't heard yet that I'll be road testing – all on acoustic, electric, and piano," he said.

The major announcement comes days after Mayer, 46, shared a cryptic post on social media with the caption, "It wasn’t time until it was. 🎟️" At the time, it was unclear if he would be dropping a new album, a new single, a music video, a movie, a tour announcement or a "new line of stools he designed for Target," as one user hilariously commented, but everyone was pretty excited, evident in the overwhelming number of comments.

Good thing that now we have answers!

Mayer most recently released his eighth studio album Sob Rock in July 2021. Since then, things on the Mayer front have been pretty quiet — up until he appeared on Call Her Daddy last month and unloaded past relationships, music philosophies and sexual revelations about himself. Not only did the "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" singer share that he likes to serenade women naked with his guitar after sleeping with them, but he also answered the decades-old question of who "Your Body Is a Wonderland" is really about .

"That was about my first girlfriend. That was about the feeling, which I think was already sort of nostalgic … I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was nostalgic for being 16," he said. Host Alex Cooper said she believed the song was about one of his famous girlfriends, but he shut that down pretty quickly. "No, that's one of those things where people just sort of formed that idea, it gets reinforced over the years, no, no, no. I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song."

John Mayer puts on a one-man pop rock show for Indianapolis audience. Did he pull it off?

solo acoustic tour john mayer

Somehow, in the middle of landlocked Indiana, John Mayer managed to put himself on an island.

Gainbridge Fieldhouse is a pretty big place. It can comfortably fit more than 20 musicians on stage. But on Tuesday, Mayer grabbed his acoustic guitar and a microphone and paddled over to his large, lonely station as part of the Solo Acoustic tour.

It was a daunting task. There's a reason drums, bass, keyboards and backing vocals are still prevalent in popular music. I'm sure Mayer would agree that they add a lot to a performance. But he's going for a different feel this time around: Eclectic setlists (that include a few glaring hit omissions) mixed with a few requests. Just him and his instrument for two hours.

Essentially, he's turning basketball arenas into the world's largest coffee shops.

Did he pull it off at the mostly full Fieldhouse?

Yes, but just barely.

While Mayer is immensely talented, I was not a fan of his last two visits to the area, both of which came at the head of Dead & Company.

Is he, some 20 years removed from his meteoric debut, still an A-level vocalist in the pop sphere? I think he is. His renditions of "Queen of California," "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" and "Changing" convinced me.

Now, is he an A-level guitarist? Absolutely. And in any sphere, cube or other 3-D shape you want to put him in. He freshened up familiar songs with strong acoustic arrangements with new and interesting solo tangents.

He brought out a 12-string steel guitar for an astonishing version of "Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967," and somehow thumbed a bass solo while plucking a guitar solo on one instrument during "Neon."

Mayer didn't do a bad job on piano for a few songs, either.

More: In first of two Indianapolis shows, Eagles soar to new heights

But, by its advertising and design, the show must be and was very limited in scope. There's only so much one guy can do up there.

Here's an acoustic ballad. You know, the thing that you came here for. "Your Body is a Wonderland," "Daughters" and so on.

Here's one of his other songs that is normally a bit more upbeat and electric, but now it sounds like an acoustic ballad because that's how he wanted this show to be.

It's an artistic choice, but I think it limits Mayer. The man is a monster at the head of a band, a demon with an electric guitar in hand.

He went electric one time for a solo at the end of "Changing," and the place went berserk. A mix of acoustic and electric, even if still unaccompanied, would have been better.

Mayer also went out of his way to explain himself when it came to the setlist. Folks may not be hearing everything they wanted to, he told the crowd, but they were making a shared sacrifice in order to hear the songs that came from Mayer's heart.

I don't doubt his conviction, but other crowds on the tour got "No Such Thing" and/or an electric version of "Gravity." The latter is Mayer's best song, and the former is a song about high school that came out when I and probably a large share of the audience was in high school.

An artist isn't obligated to play any specific song. I don't believe artists owe audiences that. It's reasonable to want a good show that's also authentic to the performer, and this generally was both of those things. But I am still a little bummed at those two song omissions.

Nits having been picked, the lion's share of the evening was a fitting showcase of Mayer's talent. Redundancy isn't the worst thing when it's a good noise being repeated.

Mayer set the tone early with a strong version of "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," recreating the familiar electric guitar lead part on his acoustic while still maintaining rhythm and quality vocals.

Then, he ended on a high note, perhaps lucking into a huge ovation for his wonderful cover of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'." He does close every show with it, but he may not have known what I do, which is that Hoosiers simply love Tom Petty.

I have seen a half dozen big-name artists, from Stevie Nicks to The Lumineers, pull out Tom Petty covers for local crowds, and they always land. Even Tom Petty recordings played as house music between live sets go over well.

It reinforces a theory I've been working on in my two years here. It's still in the test phase. I probably shouldn't even put it on paper. Let's just say I think Hoosiers enjoy Tom Petty more than just about any artist of a similar genre, even if that artist comes from Indiana.

That's a major digression, but Mayer played a part in it.

Overall, Mayer did about as well as one could within the limits he placed on himself.

The parameters allowed him to displayed his talents in a unique way. With said abilities now thoroughly showcased, we can look forward to a glorious return after he rediscovers electricity and the benefits of a few good friends playing alongside him.

Meyer Sound PANTHER Gets Personal on John Mayer Solo Acoustic Tour

The PANTHER system reacts accurately to subtle mix changes, especially in this stripped-down environment. With just a voice and guitar it’s critical that the PA does not influence tonality. The PANTHER system only puts out what you put into it!”

Gifted with an emotive voice and extraordinary guitar skills, and drawing on a deep repertoire of chart-topping songs, John Mayer is one of the rare artists able to fill “A level” arenas as a true solo act. The rousing success of his recently concluded Solo Acoustic Tour relied on an intimate connection with his audience, accomplished aurally via a reinforcement system of Meyer Sound PANTHER large-format linear line array loudspeakers provided by UltraSound.

The spring leg of the tour kicked off on March 11 at New Jersey’s Prudential Center and wrapped at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum before Mayer embarked on a summer tour with Dead & Company — also supported by a PANTHER-based system from UltraSound. The fall leg was another east-to-west marathon, launching at Madison Square Garden with the November finale again at the Kia Forum. The FOH engineer for both the solo legs and the triumphant final tour by Dead & Company was Derek Featherstone, who also wears the hat of UltraSound CEO.

According to Featherstone, mixing one voice accompanied by guitar or piano is not the simple chore it might seem. “With one vocal and one instrument, there is nothing for the artist or engineer to hide behind,” he points out. “The mix is either right or wrong. The detail in compression and effects is plainly audible so you have to mix with greater accuracy.”

Accordingly, he continues, the touring rig kept him on his toes. “The PANTHER system reacts accurately to subtle mix changes, especially in this stripped-down environment. With just a voice and guitar it’s critical that the PA does not influence tonality. The PANTHER system only puts out what you put into it!”

Although the exact system configuration varied with particular arenas, a typical deployment would be anchored by front left and right arrays of 18-each PANTHER loudspeakers with side hangs of the same length as well as, when needed, extreme side hangs for 220-degree coverage consisting of 20 LEOPARD line array loudspeakers per side. In most scenarios, three short delays of LYON line array loudspeakers were added for balance and intimacy in the far upper seats. Dual hangs of six each 700-HP subwoofers filled out the deep bass notes.

For performance capture and mix processing, the front end of the system offered both analog purity and digital flexibility, with a vintage Gamble EX68 analog console paired with an Avid S6L digital mixer. “We also made a conscious decision not to use any wireless mics, wireless guitar feeds, or in-ear monitors. That’s part of the reason for the Gamble, as there is something rewarding to having a mic or instrument on a cable going into an analog desk. For vocal inserts, we leaned on the Summit DCL hybrid tube compressors and Empirical Labs Distressors.”

With no band bleed to worry about, Featherstone selected the Neumann KMS105 supercardioid condenser for Mayer’s vocals. “With no band behind him, we could use a condenser just like we would do in a studio since we don’t have to sacrifice any sonic reproduction to navigate around background bleed.”

After meticulous care in analog capture and sound shaping, Featherstone relied on the latest advancements in digital networking to deliver the signal with undiminished purity to the individual line array loudspeakers. “We are using the Milan AVB network to run digital all the way to each PANTHER cabinet,” he notes. “We feel like the AVB network does add some clarity in the 4kHz and higher regions.”

Eight MJF‑210 stage monitors were deployed for foldback, with three each at the two guitar performance positions, and two at the piano position. “The guitar positions are set up so the center wedge is vocal and the side wedges are guitar in stereo,” says Featherstone. “This keeps the three wedges from fighting each other.”

Rounding out the sound crew for the tour were System Engineer Michal Kacunel, Monitor Engineer Ian Dubois, Monitor Tech Alex Pritchard, and PA Techs Sean McAdam, Riley Gajewski, and Erik Swanson.

John Mayer’s Solo Acoustic Tour resumes in late winter of 2024 in the UK and Europe, with most of the same UltraSound crew and front-end gear flying over and joining up with a similar PANTHER system from a Meyer Sound rental partner.

A typical setlist on the fall tour leg covered about 20 of Mayer’s own compositions plus a couple of covers. Most accompaniment was on standard acoustic guitar, with two songs backed by piano and a few more using a double-necked acoustic with some looping effects. The opening act for the fall leg was JP Saxe.
