Hawaiians today still revere the shark and honor them as ancestral familial Gods of long ago. They are one of many central figures in Hawaiian mythology and are featured in countless legends throughout the Pacific. The shark God Kamohoali`i guided his sister Fire Goddess Pele on her journey as she escaped a feud with her sister which resulted in the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. We will take you on a journey to see one of the many forms of sharks, the descendants of Hawaiian folklore, and witness their agility and gracefulness as they glide by just inches away from you. All this and a breathtaking view of Oahu’s North Shore are part of the Hawaii shark tour.

Joe Pavsek has a lifelong attachment to the sea. He has surfed and dove in the Haleiwa area for over 30 years. He’s had a diving boat in Haleiwa Harbor since 1975. He has worked on aircraft salvage recovery in Hawaiian waters. He was featured on television’s “Let’s Go Fishing” numerous times. He has also appeared on Japanese television. North Shore Shark Adventures was developed by Joe at the suggestion of his friends. In his other life, Joe is a private investigator and artist. His works are on display at galleries in Honolulu and Tahoe.

He spent a good 15-20 minutes traveling out to the shark buoy when he had been told by the passengers that we were most interested in the Humpback whales. He then spent at least 10 minutes slow walking a shark back to another boat taking time out of our tour. He also spent at least 15 minutes on the phone discussing parts for a boat motor and when he would take the boat in for repair. So in all, of the hour and a half tour about half of that was spent on sharks or boat repair, things that were not of interest to the paid passengers. So, if sharks are your thing then we would definitely recommend this tour, if you are more interested in seeing the whales then perhaps you should look elsewhere. Read more Written February 22, 2024

The boat ride was fun and had very comfortable seats. We went about three miles out to the place we stopped to view the sharks. We saw whales spouting. Captain Tyler was attentive to everyone, making sure we were safe and having a great time. The snorkeling was an added and unexpected pleasure. I was able to snorkel with Galapagos sharks! No cages! What an adventure with the bluest water and huge sharks swimming gracefully around our group. On the way back to Haleiwa, Tyler took his time allowing us to view spinner dolphins. We had plans. So we said we'd take the refund. Suddenly it was I said "appears" and we can't predict if people book, etc etc. All this after we took a plane trip so this texting was taking place at around 11 at night. Any sane person would take their wording and gesture to mean that it was cancelled, so we made other plans for two. But aha, suddenly it's not. Arg. They refused to give refund. They could have said we think you time is not going to work, would you like the moon? If not, we will let you know by such and such a time tomorrow if yours is still going to happen. Wording matters. One of the guides was spear fishing while another brought up an octopus she found and let everyone hold it. Saw lots of fish, turtles, even a dolphin. Join the friendly crew of the Kailolo II for an exciting shark cage tour in the waters off Oahu's North Shore. Departing from the Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor, you'll cruise around three miles offshore. Keep an eye out for dolphins and flying fish which are often times seen along the way. Once you reach the shark grounds, you’ll be outfitted with a mask and snorkel. The shark cage will be floating on the water's surface for the entire during of this adventure. No diving experience is necessary. This is your chance to see a variety of sharks up close and to learn more about these fascinating marine animals. Shark species that frequent these waters include sandbar sharks, Galapagos sharks and grey reef sharks ranging in size from 5 to 15 feet. Sometimes tiger and hammerhead sharks are seen as well. If you have friends or family members who do not wish to get into the shark cage, no problem. They can come along as a rider for a reduced price. Tour overview

• Custom aluminum boats, the 36-foot KAIOU, and the 42-foot ABUNAI, which include a canopy for shade and cushioned seating for comfort

• No diving experience required
• Snorkel and mask will be provided, but guests may also bring their own

Both Kala Alexander and Makua Rothman are professional big wave surfers who have spent their lives on the island. Kala Alexander

Kala Alexander is a Native Hawaiian big wave surfer, professional waterman, and founder of Nani Kai Ocean Adventures and Go Fishing Hawaii. He has over 40 years of experience in the ocean. Born in Wahiawa on O‘ahu and raised mostly on Kaua‘i, Kala is also a father of five, actor, stuntman, and producer. He has a regular character on shows  Hawaii Five-0  and  Magnum PI . He has also played parts in films  Blue Crush, Into the Blue Part 2, The Inhumans,  and  Forgetting Sarah Marshall.  He also hosted an episode of Discovery Channel’s  Shark Week  called “Sharkageddon” in 2014. Kala is one of the founders of the Mauli Ola Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with genetic disorders. Kala can always be found in the water — if not on a surfboard, then on one of his many boats in Hale‘iwa Harbor.

Makua Rothman

Makua Rothman is a Native Hawaiian big wave surfer, accomplished musician, and father of three. Growing up on the North Shore of O‘ahu, Makua was surfing by age 2, and by the time he was 18, he had caught the world’s biggest wave (66 feet) and won the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Award — the youngest surfer ever to achieve such a feat. He was also the youngest invitee to the prestigious Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at the age of 18, and he was crowned the Big Wave World Champion in 2015. As a singer and ukulele player, Makua continues to grow his musical repertoire and is passionate about sharing Hawaiian culture with the world.
