Our Cruise Expert

Gary Buchanan has sailed the Seven Seas during his 33-year career as an award-winning specialist cruise writer. Author of four books about cruising, he regularly contributes to prestigious newspapers such as The Telegraph and magazines including American Express Departures. He is a pundit on all things cruise and is looking forward to enhancing the content library for Panache Cruises.

Gary Says...

“A torchbearer in the art of cruising, Seabourn’s ships have been conceived without compromise. Compelling aspects for me are the design touches with a nod to nautical credentials that sail in harmony with cuisine that’s accomplished and inventive; I also praise the attentive and deferential service. Another facet that sets Seabourn apart is the cornucopia of land experiences which, like the company itself, are distinguished by distinction.”

An aquatic epidemiologist, a marine mammal scientist, and a behavioral ecologist walk into a bar. That’s not the setup for a punchline; that’s daily life on Seabourn’s new expedition ship, Pursuit .

A room on Seabourn Pursuit

Wildlife rules the operations in Antarctica, where penguins, seals, and whales are at the top of travelers’ checklists. Therefore, the ship is run more like an adventure safari in Africa than a cruise. The ship’s expedition team consists of 26 Antarctic experts, each specializing in a different fauna. Like Masai trackers, they are on constant lookout.

“When you do a zodiac cruise, it’s the equivalent of sitting in a safari jeep,” says Patrick Demus, the behavioral ecologist onboard Pursuit. “You never know what you’re going to see when you come around the corner.”

A submarine on Seabourn Pursuit

“It’s an ancient, alien world where it’s possible we’re seeing species new to science,” says Merel Dalebout, the vessel’s submersible pilot. “Essentially, this is a time machine, seeing the ocean as it was 500 million years ago.”

Although guests won’t see penguins or whales from the submersible, they’ll see cases of polar gigantism, where starfish, sea spiders, and ancient seaweed are larger than creatures in other warmer oceans.

For guests more interested in the feather-filled, squawking variety of animals, there’ll be dozens of opportunities for sightings. Each morning, the expedition takes zodiacs out to scout for a safe landing where guests may witness a giant elephant seal yawn or a skua attacking a penguin rookery. In the afternoon, another zodiac takes you for an hour-long cruise around glaciers and alongside porpoising chinstrap penguins. You might as well call them what they are: game drives.

“You can see the brutality of animal life a lot clearer here; it’s right in your face,” says Demus. “If you watch a wildlife documentary about certain animals, it takes the filmmakers months to get the footage. It feels like what you see in a documentary about Antarctica, you can actually see that when you spend two hours at a colony.”

When you’re back onboard, there’s still plenty of opportunity for animal sightings. Weddell seals, humpback whales, Adélie penguins, and storm petrels are known to make an appearance whether you’re soaking in the ship’s hot tub or sipping TWG Earl Grey during afternoon tea in the Constellation Lounge.

“There’s nothing like the feeling of looking out from the back of a ship and seeing one whale, two whales, three or four,” says marine mammal scientist Rachel Cartwright. “It reassures us that there is a place where all is well, and eco-systems are intact, and whales still swim leisurely by without fear of nets or fishing.”

Explorers in Antarctica via Seabourn Pursuit

From expedition leaders who have climbed all seven of the world’s highest peaks to kayak guides who have recreated Ernest Shackleton’s historic journey to Antarctica, Seabourn’s crew are arguably some of the world’s most interesting.

Apart from the cozier aspects of the ship, including fur-backed lounge chairs near a bar where glacier ice is chipped for Old Fashioneds, these safari guides at sea shine like an iceberg on a sunny day.

The Seabourn Pursuit in Antarctica

“Our team is there sharing the experiences with you on the mobile classrooms onshore, then back on board in the Discovery Center and in the Expedition Lounge,” says Shaun Powell, director of expedition operations. “Over those shared experiences and the knowledge, it allows guests to continue learning about the wildlife, and it fosters friendships that often continue beyond the voyages.”

Seabourn Pursuit’s all-inclusive 11-day expeditions to Antarctica start at $8,624 per person for a Veranda Suite based on double occupancy.

Planning a cruise can be an exciting experience, but sometimes unforeseen circumstances may arise, leading to the need for a cancellation. Understanding the cancellation policy of your chosen cruise line is crucial to avoid any unnecessary fees or complications. If you are considering a Seabourn cruise, it is important to familiarize yourself with their cancellation policy to make informed decisions about your travel plans.

Key Points to Know About Seabourn Cruise Cancellation Policy:

Seabourn’s cancellation policy varies depending on the length of the cruise and the timeframe in which the cancellation is made. It is important to note that cancellation fees may increase as the departure date approaches. If you need to cancel your Seabourn cruise, it is advisable to do so as early as possible to minimize any potential fees.

Seabourn offers a generous future cruise credit option for cancellations made within certain timeframes. This allows passengers to reschedule their cruise for a future date without losing the entire fare. It is recommended to review the specific terms and conditions of the future cruise credit policy to understand any limitations or restrictions.

For more detailed information and the full terms and conditions of Seabourn’s cancellation policy, please refer to their official website: Seabourn Cancellation Policy .

Planning a cruise involves careful consideration of various factors, and being aware of the cancellation policy is essential to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience. By familiarizing yourself with Seabourn’s cancellation policy, you can make informed decisions and have peace of mind when booking your dream cruise.

What is Seabourn’s cancellation policy?

Seabourn’s cancellation policy allows for flexibility and peace of mind when planning your cruise. If you need to cancel your reservation, the amount of the refund will depend on the timing of your cancellation. For cancellations made more than 120 days prior to the departure date, a full refund will be given. If the cancellation is made within 120-91 days before departure, a 20% penalty will be applied. Within 90-61 days, a 50% penalty will be implemented, and within 60-31 days, a 75% penalty. Any cancellations made within 30 days of departure will result in a 100% penalty. However, Seabourn offers a “Book with Confidence” policy which allows for cancellations up to 30 days prior to departure for a future cruise credit. It’s important to review the detailed policy on Seabourn’s official website for more specific information and any updates.

Can I cancel my cruise for a full refund?

Seabourn Cruise Line offers a flexible cancellation policy that allows passengers to cancel their cruise and receive a refund under certain conditions. The refund amount depends on the cancellation timeline, with earlier cancellations typically resulting in a higher refund percentage. For cruises canceled 90 days or more before departure, a full refund of the fare paid is provided. However, cancellations made within 90 days of departure may incur cancellation fees. It is important to review the specific terms and conditions of your booking, as some fares may have different cancellation policies. For more detailed information on Seabourn Cruise Line’s cancellation policy, please visit their official website at [www.seabourn.com](https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/book-with-confidence.html).

How much do you lose if you cancel a cruise?

When it comes to cancelling a Seabourn cruise, understanding the cruise line’s cancellation policy is crucial. The amount you may lose if you cancel a cruise depends on several factors. Seabourn has a tiered cancellation fee structure, meaning the closer you are to the departure date, the higher the fee. If you cancel before the final payment due date, you will typically only lose your initial deposit. However, if you cancel after the final payment due date, the cancellation fees can be significant, ranging from a percentage of the total fare to the full fare. It is important to review the specific terms and conditions of your booking to determine the exact cancellation fees that may apply. For more detailed information, you can refer to Seabourn’s official website at https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/legal/cancellation-policy.html.

Can you cancel a cruise for medical reasons?

Seabourn Cruise cancellation policy allows passengers to cancel their cruise for medical reasons. If you find yourself unable to embark on your scheduled voyage due to a medical condition, Seabourn offers a comprehensive cancellation protection program called “SeabournShield”. This program provides coverage for various scenarios, including pre-existing medical conditions, and allows for reimbursement of your cruise fare. To avail this coverage, it is important to notify Seabourn as soon as possible and provide the necessary medical documentation. By understanding the terms and conditions of Seabourn’s cancellation policy, passengers can ensure they are prepared for unforeseen medical circumstances. For more information on Seabourn’s cancellation policy and the SeabournShield program, please visit their official website.

Seabourn deposit policy

Seabourn’s deposit policy is designed to provide flexibility and peace of mind for travelers. When booking a cruise, a deposit is required to secure the reservation. The amount of the deposit depends on the length of the cruise and the type of cabin chosen. If a cancellation is necessary, the refundable portion of the deposit will be returned according to the timeline outlined in Seabourn’s cancellation policy. It is important to note that cancellation fees may apply, and the refundable deposit amount may vary depending on the cancellation timing. For more detailed information on Seabourn’s deposit policy, please visit their official website at [Seabourn’s official website](https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/cruise-vacation-planning-tools/cruise-booking/faqs.html#deposits).

In conclusion, understanding the Seabourn Cruise cancellation policy is essential for those considering booking a cruise with this luxury cruise line. It is vital to be aware of the terms and conditions regarding cancellations, refunds, and penalties to make informed decisions and avoid any financial surprises.

Seabourn’s cancellation policy is designed to provide flexibility for guests while also considering the cruise line’s operational costs and commitments. It is highly recommended to review the cancellation policy before making any bookings to ensure you are fully aware of the terms and conditions.

As discussed earlier, Seabourn has a tiered cancellation policy based on the number of days prior to the departure date. If you cancel your cruise within the penalty period, you may be subject to cancellation fees. These fees can vary depending on the length of the cruise and the specific sailing.

It is important to note that cancellation fees can be quite substantial, especially closer to the departure date. Therefore, it is advisable to consider purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations and interruptions. This way, you can protect yourself financially in case unforeseen circumstances prevent you from going on the cruise.

Additionally, Seabourn offers a “Book with Confidence” policy, which provides guests with more flexibility during these uncertain times. This policy allows guests to cancel their booking up to 30 days prior to departure and receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit. This credit can be used towards a future Seabourn cruise within one year of the original departure date.

To stay up to date with the latest information regarding Seabourn’s cancellation policy, it is recommended to visit their official website or contact their customer service directly. They can provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding cancellations, refunds, and any special policies or promotions they may have.

In conclusion, understanding the Seabourn Cruise cancellation policy is crucial for anyone considering booking a cruise with this luxury cruise line. It is important to carefully review the terms and conditions, be aware of the penalty periods, and consider purchasing travel insurance for added protection. By being well-informed, you can make the best decisions for your travel plans and avoid any unnecessary financial loss.

5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

Luxury cruises range in price from expensive to outrageously expensive. But the value of high-end ships is clear: For the money, you get more fare inclusions, nicer accommodations, upscale dining and higher space-to-passenger and crew-to-passenger ratios than on big, mass-market ships.

Still, sometimes you want the luxe for less.

You'll never find a cheap luxury cruise, but you can find sailings that are less expensive than others (either when sorting by the total cost or the per-night rate). You might have to compromise on sail dates or take a risk with the weather, but you can get great value by choosing the cruise less traveled.

Here are the five most affordable luxury cruises we could find so you can save a little bit when you sail in style.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Fall Caribbean cruises

seabourn cruise booking

Caribbean cruises might be the bread and butter of mass-market cruise lines, but they don't have the same prominence among the itineraries of the luxury lines. Tropical cruises on luxury lines tend to be shorter sailings, taking place in the fall and winter (rather than year-round) and often targeting younger professionals who might not have the time to take two-week vacations.

Combine those factors with a shoulder-season fall travel date (between mid-September and the week before Christmas), and you have yourself a more affordable luxury cruise.

For example, Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' 2024-2025 Caribbean season runs from November through March. The least expensive sailing for the season takes place in early December in the travel lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Fares start at $4,299 per person for a weeklong round-trip cruise from Miami. A similar seven-night sailing costs $4,999 ($700 more) in February.

Shoulder-season Alaska cruises

seabourn cruise booking

No matter which cruise line you sail, it's a truth universally acknowledged that the first and last Alaska sailings of the season are the most affordable. Why? Timing and weather.

The Alaska cruise season begins in late April or May and runs through September and occasionally October. These travel dates are often nonstarters for families who wait for the summer school break to take their vacations. Even travelers not bound by school schedules sometimes shy away from these cruises because of the imperfect weather conditions.

In May, temperatures can still be chilly in Alaska, waterways in glacier areas can be clogged with ice, Alaska's famous salmon haven't started to run and bus service at Alaska's famed Denali National Park hasn't yet begun. In September and October, the temperatures start dropping — and the rain keeps falling — and attractions such as Denali begin to close.

All that said, if you're willing to take a risk on the weather and aren't planning a land tour up to Denali, you can score a deal on a high-end Alaska sailing during these off-peak times.

In 2025, a September Alaska cruise on Silversea starts at $4,500 per person on Silver Moon. The same cruise in July starts at $5,900, making the shoulder-season cruise $1,400 less expensive. Even better, May is less rainy than July, so you could experience sunnier days on the more affordable sailing.

Transatlantic crossings

seabourn cruise booking

Many travelers choose their cruise for the ports of call. Cruisers are drawn to the destinations, whether they're checking exotic ports off their bucket list or love spending time on the beach. It's no surprise, then, that longer-than-average itineraries with few to no port calls are not warmly embraced by many cruise fans (except for devoted sea-day lovers).

Because many cruise ships regularly reposition between Europe (where they spend the summer) and the Caribbean (where they spend the winter), transatlantic crossings are inevitable. To attract guests, the cruise lines add interesting onboard activities and guest lecturers to the voyage, and they lower prices. If you love relaxing sea days and would revel in spending day after day in the middle of the ocean, an ocean crossing is a surefire way to get a luxury cruise experience for less.

Small, all-inclusive line SeaDream is a solid example of how affordable transatlantic sailings can get. In 2025, SeaDream 1 will sail its last Mediterranean cruise of the season from Barcelona to Malaga, Spain, and cruise prices start at $6,799 for an eight-night cruise. The ship then sails from Malaga across the Atlantic to San Juan, Puerto Rico. That 13-night sailing is five nights longer than the preceding cruise, but its starting price is $3,799 — a $3,000 difference.

Entry-level cabins

seabourn cruise booking

As a traveler chasing luxury, you're all about the upgrade. To get a great price on a high-end cruise ship, you might want to reconsider your aversion to booking the cheapest rooms.

Entry-level suites on the nicest ships are not the windowless closets you'll find on some of the mass-market ships. They're spacious cabins with either windows or private balconies and separate sleeping and sitting areas; many have nicely appointed, reasonably sized bathrooms and often walk-in or large closets. You'll get the same personal service, have access to the same gourmet dining and can enjoy the same ship amenities (a spa, a serene pool deck, social lounges and more) as folks in the top suites.

Also, you'll pay less. For example, an entry-level suite on luxury line Seabourn 's Seabourn Encore is a veranda suite measuring 246 to 302 square feet with a 68- to 83-square-foot private balcony. On a seven-night Greece and Turkey cruise departing in June 2025, prices for these rooms start at $5,499 per person. Opt for the next suite level up — a 450-square-foot penthouse suite with a 93- to 103-square-foot balcony — and prices start at $9,299. That's an increase of $3,800, all for a suite you won't spend much time in on this port-intensive itinerary.

Suite enclaves on big ships

seabourn cruise booking

Several big-ship cruise lines have entered the luxury travel space with suite enclaves that come with extra amenities, and the options can be affordable by luxury standards. These cruises are ideal for families looking for upscale accommodations combined with robust children's programming or luxury travelers who prefer a more casual vibe or a wealth of entertainment and activity options on board.

Options include Norwegian Cruise Line 's The Haven, Royal Caribbean 's Royal Suite Class and MSC Cruises ' Yacht Club. Travelers who book these suites get VIP treatment compared to their shipmates. They have access to exclusive restaurants, lounges and sun decks; get priority boarding and theater seating; and might even receive more fare inclusions such as drink packages, internet access, gratuities and butler service (depending on the category booked).

Cruise fares in these top suites aren't cheap, but they can be comparatively affordable in two ways. First, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian cruise ships typically sail shorter itineraries than true luxury lines, so you could book a short cruise to spend less on your total vacation cost. Second, while prices are comparable to the luxury lines and can skyrocket when ships start to sell out, you can sail in the ship's top suites for what you'd pay for midlevel on a luxury ship.

For example, you can book an aft-facing penthouse with a large balcony (619 to 668 square feet with a 199- to 248-square-foot balcony) on a seven-night Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Encore for $4,426 per person (including fees) on a February 2026 sailing. It comes with all of NCL's Free at Sea inclusions (drinks, dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credit), as well as the services of a butler and concierge, and access to The Haven's private lounge, restaurant and sun deck.

A weeklong Regent Seven Seas cruise to the Caribbean in February costs $10,349 per person for a 655-square-foot Grandeur Suite (with a 166- to 263-square-foot balcony). The cheapest veranda suite on that sailing starts at $4,999 per person — still more expensive than a suite in Norwegian's The Haven.

Bottom line

A luxury cruise will never be cheap, but you can find ways to spend less when you travel on high-end ships. Booking early and taking advantage of limited-time promotions will also help you save when you sail in style.

Travel | Alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season

seabourn cruise booking

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line  has nearly 100 more after that.

Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises , which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pit stop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau. “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city.”

Sometimes just seeing a whale's tail is a win when on an Alaskan tour. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port will have 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said.

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises ’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Skagway, a popular cruise port, is the northernmost point in Alaska's Inside Passage. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver, and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises  ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which incorporates an unprecedented 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

While in Skagway, let happy and hard-working sled dogs take you on a spin around Musher's Camp. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The nearly four-weeklong itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn  strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Red Onion Saloon, a former bordello built in 1898, is a top attraction in historic Skagway. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Disney Cruise Line  is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.
