Through her eclectic avant-garde pop infused with electronica, Björk (born November 21st, 1965) has become an international icon with her intelligent, forward-thinking music that frequently defies expectation.

Following the demise of her band, the Sugarcubes, in 1992, Björk embarked upon a solo career that would lead her to widespread critical acclaim and chart success. Yet this was not her first solo album. Björk had already released a hit record at the young age of 11, a collection of covers that found great success in her native country. The child prodigy later became lead vocalist for the Sugarcubes, whose art rock found a hit album in the US and UK after the release of "Life's Too Good" in 1988. After their break-up, Björk traveled to London, where she became interested in the burgeoning dance scene, which would inform much of her solo musical direction from there on.

In 1992, "Debut" was released, Björk's first solo venture since she was 11 years old. The album took influence from trip hop and electronica, with the likes of Tricky, Underworld and Nellee Hooper lending their production talents. The resulting album became hugely successful, peaking at number three in the UK charts, featuring a number of hit singles that found chart success globally. Björk became a runaway success, earning countless awards and accolades at the year's end.

Björk's following releases continued to find critical acclaim, most notably in the UK, spawning several remix albums of her work subsequently. In 2000, Björk was also named 'Best Actress' at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark." Alongside her solo efforts, Björk also created several film soundtracks, helping to diversify her work. In 2004, she released the ambitious "Medúla," an album made up entirely of vocal samples before then returning to the more beat-driven, upbeat record, "Volta" in 2007.

Björk continued to be ambitious in her scope for musical exploration, creating the concept album "Biophillia," which explored humanity's interaction with the natural world, most notably its geological landscape, and how music reflects this. The album also spawned an IMAX film, as well as a BBC 4 documentary, "When Björk met David Attenborough," further exploring this subject matter.

Forever busy, Björk appeared on a Death Grips release, on the album, "Niggas on the Moon." A live DVD of her "Biophillia" project followed shortly after in 2014, which captured Björk's ability to put on an impressive live show. In 2015, her ninth studio album was unexpectedly released after it was leaked prior on the internet, yet Björk still found critical acclaim for her highly anticipated "Vulnicura."

Live reviews

It could be argued that Björk's 2011 release 'Crystalline' was her most creative and daring collection since her career began way back in 1992. The Icelandic mega-star has always been known to push boundaries of visual media and its relation with music and this innovation remains present during her live performance.

From the percussive intro to 'Cosmogony' the sense of anticipation in the room is strong as the audience watch Björk's impressive choir ominously chant the introduction. The classic tracks such as 'Hunter' and 'Hidden Place' gain huge cheers and the performance of these influential pieces of alternative pop prove why Björk is such an iconic musician.

With such a large discography, she continuously keeps her set lists fresh and interesting by playing a variety of fan favourites as opposed to reverting straight back to the likes of 'Crying' or 'Army Of Me'. 'The Pleasure Is All Mine' sounded wonderful with a supporting choir, and 'Mouth's Cradle' was as haunting as ever.

Perhaps the oldest track performed of the evening 'Hyperballad' attains the most poignant moment as her pained vocal annunciates every lyric on this tender and beautiful ballad. The controversial 'Declare Independence' acts as the encore and the way in which Björk delivers this epic piece of power pop leaves audiences chattering about the Scandinavian star all the way into the night.

Being in the audience for a Björk performance is the modern equivalent of being one of those slack jawed scientists at the end of “Close Encounters” who stand there in amazement when the higher beings descend from above to teach us a new musical language.

Your mind melts and your synapses stretch under a slew of signals and images until you’re simply transported somewhere else.

She’s a genius.

This was the first dress rehearsal for her forthcoming world tour for her new album, Utopia and it was staged in a local cinema near to her home in Reykjavik.

We had been politely asked by Björk to refrain from taking any pictures before, during or after the show, but I can describe the set as a multi-layered combination of platforms and stages, some of which rotated while Björk or her amazing supporting artists moved from one level to another.

Those support artists are seven female flautists, who call to mind Shakespearean woodland nymphs and sprites as they jauntily run from one stage to another.

The set was dressed as a river garden, with fronds and delicate arrays of plants.

The set was around 90 minutes long, with a one song encore and no interval.

As a gig experience, it was incredibly emotional and affecting and I still find myself somewhat stunned by it now, the next day.

If you can get tickets, get them. This is not to be missed.

Björk's creativity and ability to captivate her audience is indescribable. She exudes such raw talent and a talent for entertaining her audience. She is so different and uniquely Björk that there can be no one just like her.

Her performance at each of her shows is something else. It seems as though she loves to perform and loves to bare herself to the audience.

Her voice is lovely and has a quality about it that is all her own. live is a sight to behold and her style can seem strange to some unfamiliar with her but her fans know that she just expresses herself differently. It really is something completely worthwhile to see her live and in person. The audience really appreciates her and her adorably unique voice.

She sounds dainty and tiny at first but throughout her show she gets progressively louder and more resonating and you can feel how powerful her voice can be. Everyone in the audience will be silent, you don't dare make a sound as she unfolds before your eyes and ears.

Björk is an unforgettable experience and her music, show and audience come together with such perfect clarity. She is delicate and strong and everything you would want as a performer.

Let me start off by saying that I don't like all of Björk's music but there are a few specific songs that I fell in love with and listened to nonstop at one point, and she got me through a pretty tough time in my life. So I was kind of scared that Her new album would not really be my thing, and after listening to several of its songs, I was convinced it wasn't. I bought the tickets mostly for the visuals.

My low expectations completely dissolved about 10 seconds into the concert. Björk's incredible voice in combination with her visual performance was literal magic. It was a feast for the senses - all the senses. In terms of music/movies/art I have about the emotional capacity of a brick wall, but I teared up more than once. I had to keep myself in check constantly, asking "Oh my god. Is this really happening to me right now?"

It was the fastest-moving two hours of my life. Seeing Björk live at Carnegie Hall was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I've tried to sum it up in this review but to be honest, I feel like no words could ever come close to capturing what I saw, heard, felt, and went through.

Excellent support from Lotic and Arca set the tone for a march harder, 'festival-style', beats-and-bass-oriented gig than I expected, but was utterly excited by. Did not expect to dance *so much* but it was impossible not to. Cracking setlist going as far back as Army of Me and Hunter, but still weaving in new faves like Mutual Core and of course the main body of Vulnicura. As predicted, Mouth Mantra translated pretty extraordinarily to a live set, and the pyrotechnics didn't hurt. Hyperballad was the perfect encore too. Bjork herself was on undeniably good form, but then that was never in doubt - her vocals on point, and her fun command of the stage made her feel accessible and the moments intimate despite the content being so constantly explosive and grand. Couldn't have asked for more.

A stripped down Björk with no band or choir this time, but with orchestra instead. Just her, the orchestra and the music. The first part of the performance featured on the new album 'Vulnicura' which is another masterpiece. After the brief intermission we were in more familiar territory with powerful and moving interpretations of some of her more famous songs. Jöga and Bachelorette being standout versions for me personally but sadly, no 'Pagan Poetry' in this set. After two hours of magical music from Björk, the sold out audience at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo left satisfied and amazed one again. 10/10.

The venue at Royal Arena,

My friend and I were looking for seeing the concert but everything is digital and our ticket once scan for entry not allow to scan again if you went out. So my friend has problem to come back to the concert duo to the long explain to the gate. And buying the bottle of water but is not allow to have “bottle”! They put out the water from Whole bottle of water into a cokecola paper cut. But who can drink water once in this quantity?

The sounds are amazing l!

Everything is fantastic!

But I miss to see your face - Björk

I miss to see Björk real face

I love you Björk

WRONG location!Björk is an artist you need to see. The stage was definetly too low.they should at least put a huge live screen.the first half an hour of the concert i wished i could have sit at home and listening to the cd.the sound was also very poor!

Very annoying have been also the dj before!no mention of them on the ticket....wanted to trap people there to sell food & drinks.

Saw Bjork perform at the Harpa in Reykjavik, the ticket along with the flights from the UK plus accommodation cost me a fortune, but still I have no regrets. Singing with just a string orchestra, Bjork's voice sounded as good as it ever has, and what a powerful, emotive performance from what has to be the most original artist out there.

Can't wait to see her again!

Behind the scenes on Björk’s Utopia Tour

Contributor

by Contributor

This summer, the legendary artist Björk hit the road with a European tour of Utopia , a romantic, otherworldly album laden with flutes and birdsong. Speaking to Vogue with two of her most trusted visual collaborators – the British hand-embroidery artist James Merry and the “distorted drag” make-up artist Hungry – Björk reveals the inside story of the tour’s striking look, from bone-like headpieces to surrealist floral make-up, and discusses the importance of collaboration.

Björk: The album Utopia is about exercising the muscle in us that imagines a positive future – to come up with solutions, instead of facing our environmental struggles with self-pity and hopelessness. In every moment in history it has always been difficult to imagine the next stage. This album is an attempt to go there.

James Merry: I first met Björk in 2009. We had a mutual friend in London who introduced me when she was looking for an assistant during the early research stages of her Biophilia Educational Project. I’ve been with her ever since.

Björk: It has been one of my life’s sweetest blessings to meet James. He has this air of “everything is possible” about him, which multiplies my courage. He has become one of my closest friends and the execution of all my visuals now comes from conversations with him.

Merry: We are always on these adventures together – whether it’s a tour, a shoot, a new album or just discovering a new author. I love being in that obsessive explorer energy with her, always having some new excitement to share.

She has the ability to create really generous and open spaces around her work. She also has such a practical and thorough mind. It’s always strange to me that the public caricature of her is so spaced out because in any group she is usually the strong, pragmatic one. She’s the person we all turn to for advice.

Björk: I don’t think we are born into this world to be islands separate from others. I also don’t find hierarchies very attractive, so I do feel when you collaborate you should try to celebrate each other’s strengths. In the best collaborations, you mirror sides in each other you didn’t know you had. I write and arrange most of my music on my own, so there is already a lot of gorgeous solitude in what I do. When it comes to working with others, especially on the visuals, I’m usually eager to merge.

Merry: Our collaboration has been quite a gradual process. I started working with her as an assistant and then gradually over the years that turned into more of a visual co-creative director role. None of those years have ever really been the same, which is probably why it’s so fun. I get the impression that a lot of people think I just make headpieces for her, but actually that’s something that only developed relatively recently.

Björk: Around 2015 I was starting to make a mask for myself for a concert; it was moth-inspired and I was looking for references. I didn’t have the patience and the needlework talent to do it myself and I was telling James about it, and he kind of went silent and disappeared into his room. The next morning he showed me what he had made: the incredible embroidered moth mask I wore for the Governors Ball Festival. I was absolutely blown away.

Merry: The process differs depending on the project, but in general, it stems from the same place: shared references, watching movies together, talking about ideas on long plane rides. For the headpieces, each one has its own story. I will usually try to absorb a lot of information from Björk – not only aesthetic, but also emotional, and what sort of character or mood is required. Then I’ll go away and spend weeks building prototypes to show her and if it works we will do final tweaks to get it just right.

Hungry: James approached me on Instagram asking if I would be open to painting one of my designs onto Björk’s face. They invited me to LA, as they were touring there at the time, and we created some test shots together, which ended up being album promo images.

Björk: I think Hungry is extremely talented and owns her own identity. It is my home-made theory that when you are sure of yourself in that sense, then you are strong enough to collaborate and hold your own. Hungry: She would constantly show me things to get me inspired and was very open to new ideas. It started from her really liking a floral make-up I had done a while back; it was one of the prettier characters in my portfolio and she was looking for a romantic character for Utopia.

Björk: I am quite specific about the look I am after. This album’s character is very alert and is singing a lot of hyper-romantic lyrics so it had to have that openness. A “skeleton orchid” has been a phrase I have used a lot to describe what I am aiming for. It’s an optimistic, post-apocalyptic vision, a biologically fertile place – so we might all become mutants, but we will live with nature and technology in a celebratory way.

Merry: The bone-orchid headpiece and the corresponding headpieces for the flute players came out of an idea discussed with Björk – to give the flutes and her a different silhouette and character, something more sci-fi. The aesthetic for Utopia was deliberately quite raw and alien – it could so easily have become too floral or pretty. These headpieces look slightly mutated, like new bones have grown out of everyone’s heads and half-transformed into orchids. They’re somewhere between floral and anatomical.

Hungry: We went for something vibrant, organic and feminine: a lot of red, a lot of blush and strong eye make-up. Occasionally I used floral Swarovski brows and some of my nose petal pieces.

Bjork: There have been a lot of sublime moments [during this tour] because Europe in the summer is always such a momentous, blooming thing. I guess with global warming causing soaring temperatures and storms, and Trump visiting a couple of the cities with protests and all, it seemed very topical.

Hungry: On the first official tour date in London, when Björk had just gone on stage, we had this beautiful thunderstorm next to the festival site. Seeing everything come together with that force of nature next to it was a pressure drop and a spectacular start to the tour.

Merry: We were in Helsinki the same days that Trump was there to meet Putin, which felt like a real clash of utopian and dystopian energies. I went out in the morning and got caught up in all the barricades and security for about two hours. Having that proximity on a tour that is all about trying to imagine a matriarchal and environmental solution for the future… it was a memorable friction.

Bjork: From the Eden Project’s dome to Rome’s ancient ruins, we went out of our way to find one-of-a-kind, monumental locations. I feel the Sweden gig was probably the best sung, and I felt the most free and emotionally generous there – it was the most natural high – but all of them were divine in one way or another.
