Admiral Travel Insurance Policy Types

We think Admiral Travel Insurance offers some of the most flexible options around. In this section, we will focus on the basic policy types and then go into the juicy details about optional extras (including gadget cover).

Admiral has the standard single trip or annual multi-trip policies:

  • Single trip: this is perfect for anyone taking one trip in the year, or an extended adventure for up to 365 days (maximum period covered). If you’re about to go backpacking this will probably one of the most important factors (make sure you check out the section on gadgets below too!).
  • Annual multi-trip: you can take as many trips as you like during the year, as long as each individual journey is no longer than 31 days.

For all of their policy types, Admiral provides three levels of cover:

  • the most basic cover, which is also the cheapest.
  • Admiral Gold:
  • rated highly with industry professionals and will give you a good level cover at bargain prices.
  • Admiral Platinum:
  • has all the bells and whistles, providing complete peace of mind. It also comes in much cheaper than other policies on the market!

Here are the key benefits that are covered as standard by Admiral Travel Insurance:

Legal assistance will cover any legal costs to help you claim damages or compensation for injury, illness or death which happens during your trip.

Upgrades: Gadget, Winter Sports, Cruise, Golf, Student Cover

As we mentioned, Admiral travel insurance policies are flexible and offer you choice, so you can design your policy with as much care as you did your trip.

Gadget Cover

Everyone has a smartphone these days so yours must be covered under travel insurance, right? Think again. Many insurance policies will exclude gadgets. You can choose gadget cover as an add-on with Admiral though.

a mobile phone

Admiral Travel Insurance will cover the following gadgets:

  • Audiovisual/television equipment
  • Gaming consoles
  • Electronic book readers (Kindles)
  • Mobile phones

Being a fairly new addition to the travel insurance family, gadget cover varies hugely between insurers. Always check you have the cover you need as the latest Macbook Pro is more expensive than most limits will pay out! Let’s see what Admiral could offer you:

*Unauthorised calls or data downloads: if your phone is lost or stolen and is used fraudulently, this is the amount Admiral will pay you for calls, messages or data usage accumulated in the first 24 hours.

Winter Sports Cover

Heading to the snow? Lucky you! Don’t forget your mittens, and to upgrade your insurance to cover basic winter sports like skiing , ice skating and snowboarding. Here’s what Admiral could cover for an extra premium:

*If you are unable to ski because of an illness or injury, ski pack cover will insure you for unused, non-refundable costs associated with hired ski equipment, ski school fees and lift passes.

Cruise Cover

Heading for the high seas? If you get sick at sea and need to be taken to the mainland you can bet it won’t be cheap. Cruise cover offers valuable extras and will include many activities you might expect on the water, such as snorkelling. So relax into cruise control mode and pack your beach towel and travel insurance.

Here’s an overview of Admiral’s cruise add-on cover:

  • Missed port departure: if you miss the departure and have to pay for accommodation or travel to meet the boat at the next dock.
  • Unused excursions: if you’re sick or have an accident and miss any pre-booked excursions.
  • Cruise interruption: if you get sick during the cruise and need mainland medical attention, Admiral will pay for you to rejoin the cruise (up to your policy limit, of course).

Given the ratings the industry experts give Admiral’s cruise cover, we recommend looking at the Admiral Gold or Platinum policy for this insurance type. These protect you that little bit more by providing more comprehensive cover.

Whether you’re planning on doing 18 holes a day or just the one, you should take out additional golf cover. It’s as easy as chip, swing, putt to add this to your policy. Here’s what Admiral could cover you for:

Student Cover

Yippee, you’ve finished your assignments, or at least you’re close! Congratulations, you deserve a long break to celebrate and unwind. Admiral Travel Insurance offers special cover for students going abroad. You can be away for up to 365 days, as long as you don’t return to the UK during your trip. We know that many of you will want to work or volunteer while away. Admiral will cover you as long as you’re not doing manual work.

Whether you are going on a global adventure or staying closer to home in Europe, we always recommend taking out travel insurance. You might think you’re covered with an EHIC card but local care is not always free and does not include repatriation. Also, with the looming Brexit date, you are only covered until 31 October (unless this changes). Read more about travelling to Europe and the EHIC card in our one-stop guide.

Admiral Travel Insurance Prices

While price alone should never be the main factor when choosing travel insurance, it’s important to know the market. In order to compare Admiral travel insurance prices, we have done a comparison for an annual policy including Europe for a 35-year-old woman with no pre-existing medical conditions.

While Admiral is much cheaper than the average for all three policies, the level of cover in some areas is also lower. For example, many sports that are covered as standard by other insurers are not included with Admiral. You may need to include ‘hazardous activities’ which will increase your premium, so factor this into your consideration. On the other hand, Admiral provides baggage as standard, which is often an add-on.

Also, industry professionals seem to agree that Admiral Gold and Platinum policies offer a good level of protection overall. Considering the prices compared to other insurers, this seems like a bit of a bargain to us!

Admiral Travel Insurance Reviews

We’ve scoured the web to bring you a collection of Admiral Travel Insurance reviews. It’s fair to say that Admiral gets impressive customer reviews overall and most of its policies are rated highly by industry professionals. That’s what we like to see!

Let’s take a look at a handful of customer reviews first. Across the following sites, ratings are for Admiral Insurance as a whole.

Reevoo - There are more than 16,000 reviews for Admiral. Of these, 98% would buy again and customers really liked that enquiries are handled effectively. Quick and efficient to organise for a four day trip, also economical. Robert   Reviews.io - There are more than 900 reviews and the average rating is three stars. We found the reviews on this site to be less positive than Reevoo, but there are insurance companies with much worse scores too. I will never insure anything with this company ever again. Worst experience I have ever had. Communication is shocking, all they can do is pass you on to someone else, no one wants to know. Gordon   TrustPilot - Out of more than 5,000 reviews, the average rating for Admiral is four stars. A common theme among the comments is that sales agents are professional and helpful. This seems to support the customers’ comments on Reevoo too! Fantastic customer service, really good price. Perfect insurance company! Tomas

That’s what the customers are saying and it seems pretty good to us. What about the industry professionals then? Defaqto independently reviews travel policies in the UK based on quality and policy features. Here are the ratings it gives Admiral Travel Insurance:

As you can see, Admiral Platinum is a hit on its single, annual and cruise policies. Admiral Gold also scores well on these policies, but winter sports is not rated highly at all and we know you can find other winter sports with five stars out there.

Fairer Finance scores products based on the specific features that are included as standard. Its ratings for Admiral Travel Insurance are listed below:

Again, winter sports cover scores poorly across all levels of cover so keep this in mind. Cruise cover scores well though as does Admiral Gold and Platinum for single and annual trip policies.

Excess waiver

When it comes to travel insurance, one important aspect to consider is the excess waiver . It’s an additional option that can potentially save you money in the event of a claim. But what exactly is an excess waiver and why is it important?

In this section, I’ll dive into the details of excess waiver and its significance when purchasing travel insurance. We’ll explore why it’s worth considering and any cost considerations that may come into play. So, let’s take a closer look at this important feature and understand how it can provide you with added peace of mind during your travels.

Additional option to waive the excess on travel insurance claims

An Extra Alternative to Eliminate the Surplus on Insurance Claims

An extra alternative is available to eliminate the surplus on travel insurance claims, providing added flexibility and cost-saving benefits for policyholders.

  • Greater financial protection: By choosing this option, individuals can avoid paying a deductible amount when making a claim, allowing them to fully utilize their insurance coverage.
  • Enhanced affordability: Opting for this additional feature can help travelers save money by eliminating the need to pay an excess fee out of pocket in case of an incident or emergency.
  • Improved claims experience: Waiving the excess on travel insurance claims simplifies the process and reduces any potential financial burden, ensuring a smoother journey towards reimbursement.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that this option can be particularly useful for those who frequently travel and are more prone to encountering unforeseen situations that may require filing an insurance claim.

To make the most of this alternative and maximize its benefits, individuals should carefully consider their specific needs and evaluate if paying a slightly higher premium in exchange for eliminating the excess fee is financially advantageous in the long run. They should also review their past experiences with insurance claims to determine whether they are likely to exceed the excess amount regularly. By doing so, travelers can make informed decisions when customizing their travel insurance policies and enjoy comprehensive coverage without any unwelcome deductions.

Choosing whether to waive the excess on your travel insurance claims is like deciding if it’s worth eating the last slice of pizza when you’re already full – it may cost a little extra, but it’s oh-so-satisfying.

Importance and cost considerations

  • Coverage needs: Assess the level of coverage required for your specific travel plans, including medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, personal liability, and baggage protection.
  • Comprehensive benefits: Evaluate the benefits offered by the insurance policy, such as emergency medical cover, 24-hour assistance helpline, and reimbursement for additional expenses due to travel delays or missed connections.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Consider whether the policy covers pre-existing medical conditions and any exclusions or limitations associated with them.
  • Deductibles and premiums: Compare the deductible amounts and premium costs among different policies to find the one that offers a balance between affordability and coverage.
  • Policy exclusions: Review the policy’s list of exclusions to understand what incidents or scenarios may not be covered and if there are any specific conditions under which claims may be denied.

It is important to note that each traveler’s requirements may differ based on factors such as age, destination, activities planned, and personal circumstances. Taking into account these importance and cost considerations can help you make an informed decision when choosing a travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

To ensure you find suitable coverage at an optimal cost:

  • Assess your individual needs and preferred level of protection.
  • Obtain quotes from multiple insurers to compare prices.
  • Consider bundling your travel insurance with other policies (such as home or car insurance) to potentially save on premiums.
  • Opt for a higher deductible if you are comfortable covering larger out-of-pocket expenses in exchange for lower premium costs.
  • Read the policy documents carefully before purchasing to fully understand the terms, conditions, and any optional extras offered.

By evaluating your specific requirements, comparing policies from various providers, and considering these suggestions, you can make a well-informed decision about your travel insurance coverage while balancing importance and cost considerations.

Admiral Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Admiral offers three levels of Annual and Single Trip travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All policies include some level of cover for Trip Cancellation , Emergency Medical, Trip Delay/Missed Departure, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident and Personal Belongings. Mid-tier (Gold) and top-tier (Platinum) policies also include Catastrophe cover; top-tier plans include Hijack cover and Cruise cover as well. But there's no cover for financial failure of suppliers like airlines or hotel operators.

As for optional extras, Winter Sports can be added to all tiers of insurance for an additional cost. Gadget and Golf cover are optional add-on features available for the top two tiers for an additional cost —Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. You can't add these features to the lowest tier Admiral plan. Cruise cover is included as standard on Admiral Platinum policies, or available for an extra cost on the lower tiers.

Those going on a cruise can get optional cover for cabin confinement, emergency airlift to hospital, missed port and unused excursions. To learn more about market prices please see our article Average Cost of Cruise Travel Insurance UK .

How to Buy Admiral travel insurance plans can be purchased either via a comparison engine or direct from Admiral . The basic limits are the same, regardless of where you buy your policy. Differences between buying direct and buying from a comparison site mostly relate to excess and price: generally speaking, plans from a comparison site typically cost less (around 20% less, in fact, for Annual, Multi-trip policies according to our pricing analysis) BUT they have a higher excess for the same cover levels. A higher excess means you contribute more towards any claims. Those buying direct are sometimes offered a 10% discount for buying online, so it's good to check the website to see what discounts are offered today.

Are Gadgets (e.g., Mobile Phones) Covered? Gadgets including mobile phones are covered to some extent on all plans through the Valuables section of cover. However, the standard Valuables limit may be too low for you—it's only £200, £300 or £400, depending on which plan you choose. If you travel with multiple gadgets or more expensive gadgets, you might want to consider adding Admiral's Optional Gadget Cover to an Admiral Gold or Admiral Platinum policy. (Optional Gadget Cover is not available as an add-on to the lowest tier of cover, Admiral plans.) You're able to add this to your policy whether you buy direct or from the comparison site.

What is the cost of adding gadget cover to Admiral travel insurance? We checked in November 2023 and were quoted £4.30 for £1,500 of additional cover for a single trip for the loss, theft or damage of gadgets. Prices may vary.

To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover .

Does Admiral Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under Admiral policies, so long as you pre-booked at least 2 consecutive nights of commercially-operated accommodation more than 25 miles from your home.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Admiral may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions , for which you'll pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been declared by you, Admiral has given written acceptance and you've paid an additional premium.

As part of the online quote process you can declare your conditions to see if cover can be offered, and for what added cost. Or you can call Admiral's Medical Screening number (0333 234 9913) to discuss your particular situation.

Over 65s: Now, the latest policy documents don't specify upper age limits. Previously, they said that the age limit for travellers on Admiral's Annual Multi-Trip policies was 75 years or under or 79 years or under for a Single Trip. Cover for Winter Sports was subject to an age limit of 65 years. Now they say 'the cover we can offer you will vary depending on our age limits, underwriting criteria, the cover you need and the details you provide.'

Covid Cover: You're covered for emergency medical treatment and repatriation if you contract Covid-19 abroad; for cancelling your trip if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 within the 14 days prior to your trip departure or the hospitalisation or death of a close relative within the 14 days prior to your trip departure, as a result of Covid-19 (Cover is subject to your policy being active at the time of the event and proof of a positive Covid-19 test.)

Admiral Price Comparison

According to our data research in February 2018, prices of Admiral Travel Insurance were noticeably lower than the average cost of travel insurance in the UK. In fact, even Admiral's top-tier Platinum policies come in below average, as you can see in the following chart of Annual, Multi-trip plans by geography.

chart showing Admiral single-trip travel insurance prices compared to market averages

According to data we gathered, prices of Annual, Multi-trip policies from comparison sites were around £5 to £10 cheaper than policies bought direct from Admiral, depending on geography and type of plan, representing a savings of approximately 20%.

chart showing Admiral multi-trip travel insurance prices compared to market averages

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to your individual details, so please just use the following data for general educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

We also gathered quotes for Admiral plans for a family of four from the Admiral website—they'll pay on average 2X the cost of an individual policy (basically, kids go free). Below you can see how prices change across geographical locations like Europe and America and policy types for a family of four. Plans bought from a comparison site would be expected to cost less.

How much more expensive is travel insurance for a family of 4?

Cost of Add-On Extras

Winter Sports, Cruise, Gadget and Golf cover may be added for an extra cost to some of Admiral's travel insurance policies. We've gathered quotes across geographies and types of policies for a 30-year-old individual to give you an idea of the cost of travel insurance add-ons —these prices reflect policies bought directly from the Admiral website.

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

Generally speaking, you'll pay less for an Admiral travel insurance policy if you purchase it through a comparison engine ( try ours here ). Of course, there is a trade off. Policies—which are otherwise nearly identical—differ on a few points. First, the excess is higher on the comparison site policies. Second, the upper age limit is lower on policies via a comparison site.

Differences between Direct and Comparison Site Policies

You'll notice that the upper age limit for Winter Sports is the same regardless of where you buy (65 years), as is the maximum trip length on Annual, Multi-trip policies (31 days).

Protect your holiday today. Quick quotes from over 45 insurers.

Buying Admiral Direct from the Admiral Website

Those in their 70s or older may find more success buying direct, due to the higher upper age limits discussed above.

For an extra cost you can add golf cover to plans bought direct, if needed.

Here is a brief recap of some features available on Admiral travel insurance policies. Standard features like Medical and Personal Liability are also included on Admiral policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policy Limits section . For more complete details including inner limits and exclusions, please refer to the policy documents .

Types of Admiral Travel Insurance Policies

Admiral offers three tiers of travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All are available for Single Trips or as Annual, Multi-Trip policies. Admiral Single Trip travel insurance covers trips up to 365 days abroad. Admiral Annual Multi-Trip policies cover any number of trips a policy year, up to 31 days each. You may be able to extend the maximum trip duration for an extra charge, subject to the underwriter's approval. The following limits and plan details are consistent across policies purchased from the Admiral website and a comparison site.

Admiral Travel Insurance

The "Admiral" plan is their entry-level travel insurance offering. Emergency Medical expenses are covered up to £10 million and you get up to £1,000 of cover per insured person for Travel Delays, Trip Cancellation/Curtailment and Personal Belongings.

You can add Winter Sports or Cruise cover to Admiral's cheapest plans, but Golf and Gadget cover are not offered as add ons.

Admiral Gold Travel Insurance

As Admirals's mid-tier offering, Gold policies include higher limits and the addition of Catastrophe cover (e.g., volcanic ash, earthquake, storm, flood, tsunami, etc.). Cruise, Winter Sports, Golf and Gadget cover may be added for a cost.

Admiral Platinum Travel Insurance

Admiral Platinum is the top-tier travel insurance plan with the highest cover limits per person. If the Platinum premium fits in your budget, you'll get the highest coverage levels with this plan. In addition to features of the Gold plans, Cruise cover is included as standard on Platinum policies.

How does Admiral Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Admiral travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line travel insurance plans include cover for End Supplier Failure and Natural Disasters, plus cover for the replacement cost of used points or miles in case of Cancellation/Curtailment for a trip bought with air miles or another rewards structure. While prices are a bit higher than average, according to our analysis, you are getting these extra cover features. One surprising extra is Baggage—you'll need to pay extra to cover your personal belongings as they're not included as standard.

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure or Natural Disasters, or if you book trips with miles, then Direct Line might provide more comprehensive travel insurance for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Travel Insurance Review

AXA travel insurance offers good value for money, with all plans including Insolvency, Baggage, Cancellation/Delay/Curtailment and Catastrophe. Those who ski or snowboard will get longer Winter Sports cover with AXA (over 30 days, depending on the plan).

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure and Baggage included as standard, or you spend more than 17 on Winter Sports trips per year, then AXA might be a more comprehensive travel insurance option for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Sainsbury's Travel Insurance

Sainsbury's Bank

Sainsbury's travel insurance offers solid travel cover at decent prices, especially when purchased through a comparison site. All plans include Baggage, Cancellation and Emergency Medical, but you also get Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure and Trip Abandonment. Extended Gadget cover can be added to all plans, to cover mobile phones, iPads, etc. Trip lengths are longer than average (notably up to 92 days on top-tier plans bought direct).

Bottom Line: Those needing cover for longer trips might find more suitable travel insurance from Sainsbury's Bank.

Compare travel insurance deals

Check Which? insurance ratings and compare deals using the service provided by Confused.com

We looked at 56 travel insurers, comparing more than 160 policies. See our results in the table below.

We rated six policies as Best Buys – here are the three highest scoring:

NFU Mutual - Home and Lifestyle

  • 81% policy score - 2nd out of 161 policies rated.

We like: NFU Mutual was one of a minority of providers that will pay out if your holiday supplier or airline goes bankrupt. It is one of only two providers that applies its excess (£50) once per claim (rather than per person) – which could save hundreds if you're travelling as part of a group.

We don't like:  NFU Mutual's travel insurance policies are only available to customers who also hold NFU Mutual home insurance .

  • Read our full NFU Mutual travel insurance review.

All Clear travel insurance - Platinum

  • 79% policy score -  joint 7th out of 161 policies rated.

We like: All Clear was the highest-scoring medical specialist insurer in our analysis. Its policy covers outbound, connecting and returning flights that you miss because of delays. Missed flights cover was available in more than 90% of policies we checked – but only half of policies covered the full round trip.

We don't like:  If your holiday company or airline goes bankrupt and you have to cancel the holiday, you won't be able to claim on the insurance for lost costs.

  • Read our full All Clear travel insurance review.

Insure and Go - Black

  • 77% policy score - joint 10th out of 161 policies rated.

We like:  If you're covering a very expensive trip, the Black policy has one of the highest cover limits for costs if you have to cancel – £10,000. You also don't pay excesses.

We don't like:  If you have a dental emergency while travelling, you can only claim up to £250. As with All Clear's policies, you can't claim if your travel company or airline goes bust.

  • Read our full Insure and Go insurance review .

Here's the full details of our findings in the tables below – to access each table, use the 'Select a table' dropdown below.

  • The 'Best Buys' table shows the policies that meet our exacting Best Buy criteria . When choosing these, we check for key features of cover as well as data on complaints and claims acceptance rates.
  • The other tables show the top-scoring policy from every provider we've rated. Of all policies reviewed, scores ranged from 83% to 29%.

We've also written comprehensive reviews of the best 16 insurers overall – just click on the links in the table to read them.

Best Buy policies

Table note:  All ratings are for policies available to new customers, and the details were gathered in a survey carried out in April 2023. The information should be considered correct to then. We will next update our policy scores in June 2024. See our full methodology .

For insurers outside our 'Best Buys' list, we've only included the provider's best scoring policy. However, they might offer other policies with fewer features, often at a lower price. We've still scored these policies: find the scores in our individual travel insurer reviews, which cover the biggest and best brands.

If a brand isn't listed in the table it means it didn't take part in our survey and hasn't been reviewed.

What's the best type of travel insurance?

When picking travel insurance consider the number of foreign trips you'll make over the next 12 months, where you'll go and who with.

  • Single-trip and multi-trip (annual cover) Single-trip insurance is aimed at people who are making a single, one-off journey. Multi-trip (annual) provides ongoing cover for 12 months. If you take 3 or more trips per year, multi-trip (annual) is likely to work out cheaper, and you don't have to tell the insurer when or where you're travelling.
  • European, worldwide and USA cover European-only cover is usually the cheapest type and worldwide including USA (and often the Caribbean) is the most expensive due to high medical costs. If you've no intention of going to these destinations over the next 12 months, save money by buying worldwide cover that excludes them.
  • Individual, couple or family cover You'll have the option to choose how many people to cover under a single policy, although if a member of your party needs specialist cover due to age or health, costs may change.
  • Specialist insurance options If you have more specific requirements, for example due to age, or type of holiday, we've assessed the best options for you below. Best cruise insurance • Best travel insurance for over 60s • Best travel insurance for medical conditions • Best ski insurance
  • Unexpected events cover Your policy  may include cover for unexpected events, like bankruptcy of the holiday supplier, strikes, civil unrest and more. We've listed which providers' policies have the best unexpected events cover providers.

How can I save money on travel insurance?

What you'll pay for travel insurance varies hugely by where you're going and for how long.

Take these average quotes, collected for us by Confused.com , for a couple of 50-year-olds with a joint policy:

Source: Confused.com, based on average quotes from 1 January 2023 to 20 November 2023

These are averages, and so you're likely to pay:

  • Less if just buying cover for yourself
  • Less if you're younger than 50, or more if you're older than 50
  • More if you have a pre-existing medical condition

Whatever your situation, chances are you can reduce costs by comparing travel insurance. An annual policy may work out cheaper if you travel multiple times a year.

When should you buy travel insurance?

You should buy travel insurance on the same day you book your holiday.

One of the best features of travel insurance is that it covers you if you're unexpectedly forced to cancel the trip and stand to lose money as a result.

If you leave buying your insurance until the last minute, you won't benefit from this protection, even if some providers might make it slightly cheaper.

With this in mind, you should buy your insurance as soon as you book your holiday – unless you already have annual cover in place.

Should you buy travel insurance from the tour operator or airline?

When you buy your holiday, whether that's through a traditional package provider or a budget airline, you're likely to be offered insurance at the same time.

But cover offered as an add-on to your trip is unlikely to be tailored to your needs and could be more expensive. Always check the wider market to see if you can get better cover for less.

If you do buy add-on insurance, make sure it covers any medical conditions that you have.

Do you already have insurance?

Some packaged bank accounts come with travel insurance as a sweetener, so if you have a packaged account, check whether cover is included.

If you do have travel insurance with your bank account, check its terms carefully and make sure it meets your needs. Does it cover you for trips outside Europe? Will it cover your medical conditions?

If it doesn't, call your bank to see if you can add the cover you need or look for a standalone policy that meets your needs.

You might also have some of your insurance needs met if you have personal possessions cover with your home contents insurance . These policies often protect things you carry on your person (such as gadgets or jewellery) around the world, from loss, damage or theft.

Do you need travel insurance if you have an Ehic or Ghic?

Yes, you still need travel insurance. A Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic) – the replacement for the Ehic – is a medical card that can be used throughout the EU. It entitles you to treatment in state hospitals for the same price paid by the residents of the country you're visiting. If they get free treatment, so do you.

But it won't cover the costs of medical transportation (for example ambulance bills or being flown back to the UK where medically needed), alongside costs of cancelling your holiday or returning early, replacing lost and stolen possessions, and many other things - that's what travel insurance is for.

  • Find out more:  The Ehic and Ghic explained

While it can be tempting to get the cheapest cover you can find, this could prove a false economy. Everyone's specific cover needs will be different, but as a starting point, we recommend looking for policies with these minimum levels of cover:

  • Medical expenses:  £5 million
  • Cancellation cover:  £2,000 – or the full cost of your holiday (which may be higher or lower)
  • Personal belongings: £1,500 – or the value of your possessions
  • Personal liability cover: £1 million.

Many sports won't be covered as standard, such as skiing and snowboarding , so you'll need to get cover that includes this, or add it on for a fee.

Cruises requre a special type of cruise insurance. If you're considering working abroad, or spending a couple of months abroad, you may need 'backpacker insurance'.

1. Check our tables and reviews

Our experts have assigned each travel insurance policy a policy score, reflecting how comprehensive, overall, the cover is.

It's important to remember, however, that travel insurance is complex – so even providers with high policy scores won't necessarily cover everything you're looking for. For a more detailed look at some of the larger and higher-scoring providers, see our individual travel insurer reviews.

2. Get a travel insurance quote

While looking at our reviews, you can get a quote for travel insurance using the service provided by Confused.com.

You might be able to save by using multiple comparison sites.

Some insurers don't sell through comparison sites, including NFU Mutual and Direct Line , and specialist medical insurers .

Both the government's MoneyHelper website and the British Insurance Brokers Association have directories of such insurers.

An insurance broker can find affordable cover for unusual scenarios that most insurers won't cover.

3. Check the T&Cs

Before you buy, check the policy wording to make sure you understand what your policy covers, and what it doesn't.

If there are specific reasons you've bought the cover, check these sections to make sure they meet your expectations. Also check the policy's general exclusions and conditions. If anything in the policy is unclear, contact the insurer.

Finally, check what protection your holiday provider offers, because if something goes wrong, you might need to seek compensation from it first before your insurer will accept your claim.

Check you're getting a great deal and search for a new travel insurance policy using the service provided by Confused.com. Get a quote now

Dean Sobers, Which? insurance expert says:

Dean Sobers

'In our tables, you'll see dozens of products brimming with features and high levels of cover – but just six Best Buys.

'Unfortunately, it comes down to the difference between what a policy promises on paper, and the depressing reality that we see in the claims statistics. Roughly a quarter of claims made on single-trip and annual European policies were declined by travel insurers in 2022 (the latest stats available). With most kinds of insurance, payout rates are above 90%.

'Not all travel insurers are the same: some – including our Best Buys – were markedly better in this data than others. But a large number of candidates clearing all other hurdles in our analysis fell flat when we reviewed their claims acceptance rates and the numbers of their claimants who'd lodged complaints.

'We'd love to be able to recommend a much wider selection of policies, as we all have different requirements and budgets when shopping around for travel insurance. Hopefully, we'll see insurers do better in future. In the meantime, the best way to avoid disappointment is to be reasonably familiar with the policy's T&Cs when you buy it, as policy exclusions are the most common single reason claims get turned down .

'Each section of a policy wording document (for example, cancellation or delay cover) will include its own exclusions. You'll also need to check the policy's section that details 'general' exclusions and conditions that apply across the policy.'

Frequently asked travel insurance questions

Does travel insurance cover cancelled flights.

This depends on whether you can no longer make your flight or the airline has cancelled it.

If the airline cancels your flight, it is generally their responsibility to find an alternative flight or to give you a full refund.

If you can no longer make your flight, perhaps due to illness or accident, then it is not the airline's responsibility. If you have taken out a travel insurance policy and depending on the reason you can no longer fly, you may be able to claim some of the flight costs back.

You should also check the airline's conditions of carriage if you are going to miss your flight last-minute to see whether you can be moved to an alternative flight.

Can I buy travel insurance after departure?

Yes you can - but you'll need to get a special type of policy called 'post-departure insurance'.

Unfortunately, you're likely to pay more and get less cover than if you had bought standard travel insurance.

Post-departure insurance won't cover incidents that have already happened, such as a delayed flight on the way out. It generally applies from the day after buying, not the same day.

Even though you'll need to cover fewer days, the specialised nature of post-departure insurance means it's likely to cost more per day and overall.

The best approach is to buy standard travel insurance on the same day you book your holiday. Although the insurance only needs to cover the dates of your holiday, from the moment of buying it you'll be covered if, for instance, you need to cancel your trip.

Can I get travel insurance if I'm pregnant?

You can get travel insurance if you're pregnant, especially if your trip is less than 28 weeks into your pregnancy.

Many insurers still offer cover for trips after that point, but check with them before buying, and bear in mind airlines may request extra details such as a letter from your doctor.

Pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing medical condition so you shouldn't have to tell your insurer or pay more.

Standard travel insurance will cover emergency medical care, but ask insurers if antenatal care after premature births will be covered, or cancellation due to pregnancy-related complications.

In general, travel insurance won't pay out if you cancel a trip simply because you're pregnant - it's worth asking airlines and accommodation providers if you can reschedule.

Do I need travel insurance for the UK?

Potentially, depending on the type of trip you've booked.

Many travel insurers will cover the UK; if you have an annual policy check if it includes UK travel.

The main advantage of travel insurance for the UK is cover if you need to cancel your trip (such as because of illness) or lose baggage.

In general, travel insurance only covers paid-for accommodation, sometimes with a minimum duration. So stays with friends and family wouldn't be covered.

Nor will you need travel insurance for medical cover, due to the NHS - though visitors to the Isle of Man and Channel Islands may need insurance for repatriation to the mainland.

Your home contents insurance may cover personal possessions outside the home, but you may have to pay high excesses.

Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

Yes, travel insurance is essential for European holidays.

The European Health Insurance Card (Ehic) and Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic) only entitle you to public medical care at the price locals pay.

That's only in the EU, Switzerland and a few other countries however, and won't cover associated - and very high - costs such as for rescue from ski slopes or repatriation to the UK.

Nor will the Ehic and Ghic cover cancellations or lost baggage, unlike the best travel insurance policies.

  • Find out more: The Ehic and Ghic explained

Does travel insurance cover cruises?

Some, but not all, policies will offer specialised cover for cruises.

In some cases cruise cover will be an optional add-on.

This includes scenarios such as being ill and confined to your cabin, missing your departure during an excursion, or the intinerary being changed.

We've listed which policies cover cruises and how good they are in our guide to the best cruise insurance .

Does travel insurance cover skiing?

As with cruises, this depends on your policy.

Winter sports cover may be included as standard within your travel insurance, or as an optional add-on.

It should cover scenarios such as piste closure, avalanche delay and air ambulance rescue from the slopes.

We've listed which policies include or offer winters sports cover, and rate that cover, in our guide to the  best ski insurance .

Are you covered for Covid?

Covid isn't the menace to travel that it was a year or two ago, but it's still around and retains the potential to scupper your plans.

Fortunately, all policies we examined provide at least a basic level of Covid cover - covering you if you get ill while travelling and require emergency medical care or medical repatriation to the UK.

Some 98% of those we checked also cover cancellation costs if you can't travel because you're ill with the virus.

From here, the degree of Covid cover varies significantly between policies - meaning you can't make assumptions about what's covered and should check very carefully if Covid cover is a priority for you.

Of the policies we analysed, fewer than one in ten will pay if your hotel closes because of Covid and you can't get your money back.

And only a handful of providers cover you if you choose to cancel your plans because the FCDO advises against travel to your destination due to Covid. At the time of our analysis in April 2023, these were:

  • Direct Line
  • M&S Bank
  • Nationwide Building Society

How do I claim on my travel insurance?

For emergency medical claims, your travel insurer will have a 24/7 phone line. It's worth saving the number if your phone prior to travelling.

To make other claims, you may be able to claim by phone and/or online. Don't leave it more than a couple of weeks to claim, as there may be time limits.

  • Find out more: How to claim on your travel insurance

What medical conditions do you have to declare for travel insurance?

Any current or recent medical conditions that haven't been disclosed to your insurer will almost certainly be automatically excluded from your policy.

In recent Which? research, we found that pre-existing medical conditions were the second most common reason for claims being turned down.

When you declare a condition, you'll go through a medical screening process where you give the insurer information about your medical history. When you buy insurance by itself, this will usually form part of the application process.

With some providers (for example where the cover is included with a holiday or a bank account), you'll need to contact the insurer separately to have the conditions added. If you're uncertain about what needs to be declared, it's best to contact the insurer.

  • Find out more:  Best travel insurance if you have a medical condition

How else can you protect your holiday?

Travel insurers only expect you to claim with them if you've been unable to recover your money through other channels.

Book with a Which? Recommended holiday provider

If a package holiday firm cancels your holiday, or airlines can't fulfil flights, you're entitled to a refund by law.

Unfortunately, in the wake of Covid, not all travel providers fulfilled their legal obligations. For peace of mind, opt for one of our Which? Recommended Providers .

  • Find out more:  Your legal rights with package holiday companies

Atol protection

If you buy a package holiday that includes flights from an Atol-protected firm, you'll get your money back if it goes bust. You'll also be repatriated if this happens while you're on holiday.

  • Find out more:  how do I know if my holiday is Atol protected?

Your credit card provider

If you can, pay for your holiday with a credit card .

If you pay with a credit card for services costing more than £100 and less than £30,000 that aren't provided as advertised, you can claim the money back from your card supplier if the seller (ie the holiday company) won't refund you.

  • Find out more:  Section 75

Banks have similar schemes to help you recover money for services that haven't been fulfilled as paid for. These are known as chargeback.

Chargeback can be used to recover debit and prepaid card payments, as well as credit card payments below £100.

Banks aren't legally bound to do this in the same way as credit card providers are under Section 75, so you should always pay for amounts over £100 with a credit card if possible.

How we analyse travel insurance

Our editorial independence means we are able to work on behalf of consumers, not insurers. That means our reviews are fair and there's no hidden agenda.

Policy score

The policy score rates how comprehensive the cover is in a policy – the higher the better.

We've looked at 161 policies, examining 67 elements of cover in each.

Policies are given points for each element of cover, reflecting how competitive their cover is compared with what other policies offer. The policy score shows how well the policy did overall.

Based on our assessment of which elements are more or less important for customers choosing and using travel insurance, we adjust the impact that points earned in each area has on the overall policy score.

Among the highest-weighted elements are medical expenses cover, cancellation cover and the compulsory excesses on the policy.

How we pick Which? Best Buys

Our 'Best Buy' badge recognises the individual products that stood out as being the most comprehensive in our analysis.

It doesn't reflect customer service. However, we do look at claims statistics published by the Financial Conduct Authority and complaints data from the Financial Ombudsman Service, where these are available. We won't give a Best Buy badge to providers shown to reject higher than average numbers of claims or that have a poor track record when it comes to complaints.

Policies named as Best Buys did well in our analysis of cover, with a policy score of at least 66%.

Additionally, Best Buy policies scored well consistently across different areas of cover. To make the cut, a policy needs to have scored at least three out of five points in two thirds of the features we compare (see 'Policy score' for more).

Lastly, all Best Buy policies must provide - either as standard or as an option - the following levels of cover as a minimum:

  • £5m cover for medical expenses - with emergency medical repatriation and some cover for emergency dental treatment
  • £2,000 cancellation and travel abandonment cover - including cancellation in the event that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel to your destination country because of civil unrest, war, terrorism or natural disaster after you've insured your holiday
  • Cancellation cover because of the illness, injury or death of a close family member or a person you were planning to stay with; cover for travel delays - including cover for missing your outgoing or returning flight due to delays
  • £1,500 cover for baggage
  • £2m personal liability cover

  • Bundle upgrades allow you to customize your affordable travel insurance policy.
  • Emergency medical and evacuation limits can be doubled with optional upgrade.
  • Base travel insurance policy has relatively low medical limits.
  • $300 baggage delay benefit requires a 12-hour delay.
  • Optional CFAR upgrade only reimburses up to 50% of trip cost.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Swift and easy claim

I took out my insurance with admiral on the day me and my partner exchanged contracts to our first home. 4 days later we received a call to say a mains pipe had burst in the loft and flooded the house top down (before we had completed on the house) Having been such a grey area and so confused on what to do next we call Admiral to begin the claim. Within 2 days our loss adjuster (Mark Mayes) attended the property and thoroughly went through next steps with us. We begin seeking quotes from providers to help get the property back to a liveable state. Mark was informative and fair throughout every stage and made a very stressful and upsetting situation easy and seamless. Mark had my full trust, and I knew we were in good hands. He replied to all my emails in a timely manner and answered all our questions and concerns. Our claim has now been settled and we can’t thank Mark enough. Highly recommend.

Angus Johnson who dealt with my request…

Angus Johnson who dealt with my request for car insurance was most helpful and kept as near as possible to price quoted by Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis without increasing as did other Comparison sites.. Although current price of insurance is now treble of 2 years ago I found ADMIRAL the best quote of various sites I tried. Although I consider myself to be a safe driver, I feel i am up against the AGE Barrier due to approaching 90 years old and forced into high cost premiums.

Easy to transfer home insurance online to Admiral…

I have only recently changed to Admiral (hence 4 stars) because they offered a quote much cheaper than my previous home insurance. The online transfer was really easy with Compare the market site & I’ve been sent my paperwork promptly through the post.

A good experience

Friendly, helpful service. Takes some time to go through the details but not too much duplication of what I'd put in online. A good experience, which is unlike many in similar circumstances.

Great value for great service.

The cover I've been given is great value and worth every penny. It was easy to set up and I'm hoping it will be just as easy to maintain. Everything that is included within my cover is everything I've been looking for.

Excellent service

They take you through their products offers and give you a detailed analysis. They will solve your problem until you now have your results

Hassel free

My last insurance company increased my yearly price by 5 x. Admiral matched my expectations. The transfer was simple and hassel free

Climb mountains to cancel renewal

Initially cheap - price vastly pumped on renewal. Found cheaper elsewhere. Only way to cancel renewal is to call, where you listen to childish pan pipes and a message every 30 seconds telling you to use the website and leave the phone line for urgent calls. Despite telling call handler I had already purchased new policies, they *insisted* on giving me a lower price, after I told them I didn't want to know what discount they could apply. Unnecessarily long and frustrating call - and frankly rude as my clear instructions were repeatedly ignored (no wonder you have to wait so long to get through!). In 27 years of driving, I've never had this situation dealing with an insurance company.

While traveling can be a fun escape, it's an inherently risky activity with many variables to consider. So many worries can remove you from the joy of travel, which is where travel insurance can help.

Allianz Allianz Travel Insurance Global Assistance is a prominent leader in the travel insurance space that has been around in some form since 1890. Allianz offers a variety of travel insurance plans that can suit your individual needs. Read on to learn more about Allianz.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Allianz is one of the leaders in the travel insurance industry, included in our guide on the best international travel insurance . With 10 plans split between single trip, annual, and rental car insurance, Allianz has its bases covered. It also provides specific insurance for particular needs, such as annual policies for business travelers and sports equipment coverage for athletes.

While Allianz is one of the best international travel insurance providers, it also has great CFAR coverage for its Prime and Premier single trip plans, covering 80% of nonrefundable travel expenses when most policies usually offer 75%. It's also great for families, with coverage for kids 17 and under in its One

Allianz is well reviewed among customers, receiving an average of 4.3 stars out of five across nearly 70,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Its Better Business Bureau page fares a little worse, receiving 3.64 stars out of five across 1,600 reviews. Positive reviews mentioned an easy and quick claims process with a responsive customer service team. However, negative reviews often mentioned difficulty specifically with claims for ticketed events.

Allianz also has a highly rated mobile app called Allyz TravelSmart through which you can contact customer service, view your plan, and file a claim. It received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store.

Coverage Options Offered by Allianz

Allianz travel insurance offers different policies, grouped under two types: single trips and annual multi-trip insurance .

The company's travel insurance policies can include the following coverage types:

  • Trip interruption coverage , which can help recoup costs if you leave a trip early.
  • Travel delay , which can cover some costs if you need additional accommodations due to a delay in travel.
  • Emergency medical transportation , which covers transportation to a hospital for eligible illnesses and injuries.
  • Emergency medical expenses in case of a dental or medical emergency.
  • Baggage delay , which can cover some costs if you need to purchase required items due to your bags being delayed by a certain period of time. Must have receipts for this.
  • Baggage loss or damage , which can help recoup some costs if your bag is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement, which can help recoup costs if you must cancel a nonrefundable trip due to an epidemic. It's important to note that there may be limitations and this isn't an option everywhere.
  • Travel accident coverage , which can cover costs related to an injury that results in loss of vision, your hands or feet, as well as loss of life.
  • Support via a 24-hour hotline

Single-Trip Plans

The general budget option is OneTrip Basic, which can offer various protections should something happen, if you file a claim for a qualified reason.

One step up is the OneTrip Prime policy, one of the most popular plans Allianz offers. It has higher coverage limits than the Basic plan, along with some additional perks.

A more complete option is OneTrip Premier, which includes more comprehensive protections should you need them. This policy is for more extensive, longer trips and includes extras like SmartBenefits—which up to $100 per day for a covered travel or baggage delay with no receipts necessary, only proof of delay—and sports equipment loss coverage.

The coverage limits available vary by plan. Here's an overview of what each policy covers:

Other OneTrip Premier benefits not mentioned in the table above include:

  • Sports Traveler, reimbursement up to $1,000 in the event of a missed sports event for a qualified reason
  • Sports Equipment Loss, reimbursement up to $1,000 to cover damaged or lost sports equipment
  • Sports Equipment Rental, reimbursement up to $1,000 for the cost to rent sports equipment if your equipment is damaged or lost
  • Vehicle return, up to $750 reimbursement to return your vehicle to your home if you can't drive it for a qualified reason
  • Adventure and sports exclusions changes, which allows you to waive some losses in the event you participate in high-risk activities like free diving at 30 ft, scuba diving at 100 ft, caving, and more

There are two additional single-trip plans from Allianz that offer more specialized coverage: One Trip Emergency and OneTrip Cancellation Plus.

OneTrip Emergency Medical

OneTrip Emergency Medical is a budget option that exclusively offers post-departure benefits to cover you while you're on your trip. As such, the plan doesn't include pre-departure benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Travel delay, up to $200 per day per person for a maximum of $1000 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $10,000
  • Emergency medical transportation, up to $250,000
  • Emergency medical expenses, up to $50,000 though dental emergencies have a maximum of $750
  • Baggage delay, up to $750 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $2000
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement
  • Concierge services included

OneTrip Cancellation Plus

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus policy by Allianz is its economical back-to-basics option that can recoup costs in the event of a travel delay, interruption, or cancellation for a qualified reason. This policy includes:

  • Travel interruption coverage, up to $5,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000
  • Travel delay, up to $150 with delays of six hours and beyond

Multi-Trip Plans

The aforementioned policies are for single trips, but with Allianz travel insurance it's possible to get an annual/multi-trip policy.

The starter annual plan is the AllTrips Basic policy which includes the most basic coverage, and it excludes both trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

The AllTrips Prime policy is geared toward travelers who take a minimum of three trips each year and comes with additional coverage compared to the basic plan.

Another annual plan is the AllTrips Premier policy, which is geared toward frequent travelers and includes higher coverage limits and choices.

AllTrips Executive

Additionally, there's the AllTrips Executive policy, which may be a good fit if you're a frequent business traveler. Under this plan, personal travel is also covered. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500 or $10,000
  • Travel delay, with a daily limit of $200 up to $1,600 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $50,000
  • Baggage delay, up to $1,000 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $1,000
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage, up to $45,000
  • Business equipment coverage, up to $1,000 in the event your business equipment gets lost or damaged
  • Business equipment rental coverage, up to $1,000 in the event you need to rent business equipment due to loss, damage, or theft
  • Change fee coverage, up to $500 to recoup costs of changing a ticket for a qualified reason
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage, up to $500 to recover fees lost due to getting loyalty points back after a canceled trip
  • Pre-existing condition coverage available when purchased within 15 days of first trip deposit

Additional Coverage Offered by Allianz

Aside from the travel insurance policies from Allianz listed above that help travelers prepare for interruptions and cancellations, there are additional add-ons that can cover more.

OneTrip Rental Car Protector

If you're looking for rental car coverage, Allianz offers the OneTrip Rental Car Protector policy for $11 per day. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $1,000
  • Collision damage waiver, up to $50,000 which helps cover costs in the event your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen

On top of the rental car coverage plan, with the OneTrip Prime plan, there's an optional upgrade to get Required to Work coverage. If there is a work-related emergency and you need to cancel for a qualified reason, this coverage can help recover expenses.

Cancel For Any Reason

An optional upgrade for OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, Allianz cancel for any reason policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs when canceling a trip for any reason. Allianz stands out compared to the best CFAR travel insurance as most policies only offer 75% coverage.

What's Not Included with Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz travel insurance covers the basics and more and has some high-risk activity exclusions in the OneTrip Premier plan. Aside from that, Allianz travel insurance excludes the following:

  • Acts of violence, such as war, terrorism, and civil unrest
  • Risky adventure sports
  • Unexpected natural disasters (OneTrip Premier allows cancellation due to hurricane warnings)
  • Any travel alerts or government regulations and more

If you're interested in coverage for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and more, consider World Nomads, which covers more than 200 activities.

Allianz Travel Insurance Cost

Allianz single trip travel insurance estimates.

How much travel insurance costs with Allianz will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of policy you purchase. To get a quote with Allianz, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Your destination
  • Travel dates
  • The state you live in
  • The total cost of the trip

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $102 for OneTrip Basic
  • $151 for OneTrip Prime
  • $184 for OneTrip Premier

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Allianz travel insurance quotes are:

  • $153 for OneTrip Basic
  • $195 for OneTrip Prime
  • $270 for OneTrip Premier

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $298 for OneTrip Basic (total for two travelers)
  • $400 for OneTrip Prime (total for two travelers)
  • $540 for OneTrip Premier (total for two travelers)

Allianz travel insurance premiums generally stack up favorably against the average cost of travel insurance  which is $248 per trip, but again, the specifics of your trip will largely determine how much you'll pay to insure it.

Allianz Annual Multi-Trip Estimates

To receive a quote on Allianz annual plans, you don't need nearly as much information. You just need the following:

  • Insurance start date
  • Your state of residence

A 30-year-old New York resident looking for travel insurance will pay the following prices for annual travel insurance with Allianz:

  • Allianz Basic: $125
  • Allianz Premier: $249
  • Allianz Executive: $459

A 60-year-old couple from Texas will pay the following:

  • Allianz Basic: $63 per traveler, $126 total
  • Allianz Premier: $217.50 per traveler, $435 total

Compare Allianz Travel Insurance

See how Allianz stacks up against the competition.

Allianz Travel Insurance vs. AXA Travel Insurance

Competitor AXA travel insurance covers 75% of your nonrefundable costs if you choose to cancel, for any reason (as the name suggests) if you choose that as an upgrade and buy it two weeks before your first trip deposit. Allianz's CFAR policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs.

That said, if we look at the travel insurance quotes based on a 30-year-old traveler from California going to Japan in the first two weeks of October paying a total of $4,000 for the trip, AXA travel insurance is more affordable. It's $97 for its Silver plan, which covers 100% trip cancellation and interruption. Compare this to $153 for the OneTrip Basic Plan through Allianz.

Allianz Travel Insurance  vs. HTH Travel Insurance

Allianz is a good travel insurance option if you're looking for a variety of customized choices. Another competitor, HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance , has three trip protection options .

TripProtector Economy is HTH's budget option and may be a good fit if you're looking for higher medical coverage limits. This policy covers up to $75,000 in accident and sick benefits and $500 in dental benefits.

Plus, the policy covers up to $500,000 for an emergency evacuation. The OneTrip Basic policy from Allianz covers the same dental benefits but offers just $10,000 in medical expenses.

Allianz vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can offer robust protections, but if you're looking for something basic for trip interruption or cancellation and rental car coverage, check your travel rewards credit card. If you experience illness, weather, or cancellations that affect your trip, you may be able to recoup costs.

Credit card travel insurance coverage may be a good fit for short trips where you don't have a ton of upfront prepaid costs. However, if you're going to be away for a while, have many prepaid expenses, and are concerned about medical coverage, traditional travel insurance may be your best bet.

Allianz Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Is allianz a good travel insurance company.

Allianz is a reputable and well-established travel insurance provider. The company offers various travel insurance policies for individual trips as well as annual plans. Coverage options may include trip interruption, trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and more. The company has mixed reviews from consumers but has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

How does Allianz cover COVID?

Nearly all travel insurance policies offered by Allianz cover COVID-19, aside from the OneTrip Rental Car Protector Plan. Through the Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, policyholders receive additional protections if they need to cancel a trip due to COVID. Unfortunately, while it's available in most plans it's not available in all jurisdictions, so be sure to read the fine print.

Which Allianz plan is best?

While the best plan is one best suited to your needs, Allianz's OneTrip Premier is the most robust policy, with high cancellation and interruption coverage. Additionally, kids 17 and under are included in coverage. This policy also includes unique benefits for athletes and adventurers thanks to sports equipment coverage.

Does Allianz require proof of incident?

If you need to file a claim, Allianz may require proof of incident in order to receive benefits. In cases of medical issues, you may need to provide a medical receipt or document. In other cases, you may need to provide other documentation for trip cancellation or trip interruption such as a death certificate, police report, or employment letter.

Does Allianz cover missed flights?

Allianz doesn't cover missed flights exactly but can help cover costs due to trip delays depending on your policy. So if you missed a connecting flight, you may be able to receive funds to recoup costs related to accommodations and transportation.
