The kind of foods you eat can affect the amount of acid your stomach produces. Therefore eating the right kind of foods may help you control the symptoms .

There are certain foods and drinks that you should try to avoid  when you’re struggling with acid reflux:

  • tomatoes and tomato-based products
  • fatty meats
  • fried foods, fast food, and all greasy foods
  • coffee and other caffeinated drinks
  • acidic drinks like soda and orange juice
  • onions & garlic
  • chili powder and pepper

You may not be able or want to completely eliminate these foods from your diet, but try to limit yourself. Moderation is key!

Before I get to our delicious smoothie recipes, we first have to know what kind of ingredients are best for making acid reflux-friendly smoothies. To make this simple for you I will provide examples of healthy foods that may help ease heartburn .

Best Ingredients for Non-Acidic Smoothies

Spinach for Acid Reflux

  • Leafy Greens –  kale, spinach, broccoli, Swiss chard, are low in calories and high in nutrients . They can reduce stomach acid and may help you control acid reflux .
  • Root Vegetables – carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets are alkaline foods and may help you ease heartburn .
  • Noncitrus Fruits – melons, bananas, apples, pears, pineapples are examples of low-acidic fruits and may be safe to eat and add to your anti-acid reflux smoothies. Bromelain , an enzyme in pineapples, is anti-inflammatory and may help you reduce the symptoms of acid reflux . Keep in mind, however, that some doctors advise against eating pineapple if you have acid reflux since pineapples are acidic .
  • Berries – use blueberries, strawberries, blackberries in moderation.
  • Oatmeal – is a great source of fiber. Some studies show that a high-fiber diet may help you control symptoms and feel better.
  • Ginger – despite its spicy taste, fresh ginger may be alkalizing. It’s a central ingredient in Chinese medicine . In small doses, it sometimes can be helpful to soothe stomach irritation . It  may also help reduce stomach acid flowing up into your esophagus . Using more than four grams (less than an eighth of a cup) a day can be counterproductive and can even cause additional heartburn. Moderation is key when it comes to adding ginger to your smoothies!
  • Healthy Fats – try replacing saturated and trans fats (meat, dairy, processed foods) with healthy monounsaturated fats . Examples for “good” fats are olive oil, avocadoes, many nuts, and seeds. While these are all examples of good-for-you fats, there is still something as too much of a good thing. Overconsumption could make your symptoms worse. Use them in moderation.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk  – Besides just using plain filtered water, unsweetened almond milk is a good alternative for your smoothies. Almond milk is considered alkaline, as long as you use the no added sugar version.

Try replacing foods that can make your symptoms worse with healthy foods that may help relieve heartburn . In the end, make sure to talk to your doctor if you have questions about what kinds of foods should be part of your anti-acid reflux diet, as everyone’s different.

Strawberries are high in antioxidants . They can be a good addition to your acid reflux-friendly smoothies, as long as you use them in moderation.  Bananas are less acidic than most other fruits. They give this smoothie creamy texture and a sweet, well-rounded taste.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks, frozen
  • ½ cup strawberries, frozen
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 tsp flaxseeds

How to Prepare:

Simply add all ingredients to your blender jar. Blend on the highest setting until creamy and smooth. Enjoy!

Fruits are generally considered being acidic . The fruits I have chosen for this acid reflux-friendly smoothie are all higher on the pH scale and can be considered alkaline foods. You can replace the almond milk with filtered water for an even lower-calorie version.

  • 1 cup kale, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup mango chunks, frozen
  • 1 cup cantaloupe melon, cut into chunks
  • ½-inch fresh ginger, peeled
  • 1 ½ cup unsweetened almond milk

Cut the kale leaves into small chunks. Peel the ginger, if it’s not organic. Place everything into your blender jar and blend until smooth. Add some ice cubes to make this smooth more refreshing. Enjoy!

  • 1 small beet, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into chunks
  • 1 stalk of celery, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup carrot juice

After you’ve prepared everything, place it into your blender and blend until smooth. As we’re using hard and fibrous vegetables such as carrots and beets, you’ll need a more high-powered blender for this smoothie. Oats can be a perfect ingredient for acid reflux smoothies since they’re high in fiber. Studies have shown that foods rich in fiber may be beneficial for fighting acid reflux.

  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 2-3 almonds
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • a hint of cinnamon

Place the oats at the bottom of your blender. Pulse a few times until ground. Add the almond milk, bananas, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Blend until creamy and smooth. Enjoy!

Pineapples are said to be anti-inflammatory . They contain an enzyme called Bromelain which may be beneficial for treating acid reflux .

Keep in mind, however, that some doctors advise against eating pineapples if you have acid reflux. Pineapples typically score lower on the pH scale. Please make sure to talk to your doctor to find out if pineapples should be a part of your diet.

Although pineapples are considered being acidic, this green smoothie’s taste is on the sweeter side. It’s a great smoothie recipe for those of us who usually don’t like green smoothies.

  • 1 cup of water
  • ½ cup mango chunks, frozen

Simply place all ingredients into your blender and blend on the highest setting until smooth. Add ice cubes for a more refreshing taste.

  • ½ small beet
  • 1 cup cherries, frozen or fresh
  • ½ cup spinach (optional)

Prepare the beets , place everything in your blender and blitz away!

Pineapple Acid Reflux Smoothie

As I’ve mentioned before, pineapples are lower on the pH scale but contain an enzyme that may help with acid reflux. If you’re not sure if pineapples are right for you, simply leave them out. This tropical smoothie tastes just as delicious without the pineapple.

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

Simply place everything into your blender jar, turn your blender on. Blend until smooth and creamy. Enjoy!

What Else Can You Do Besides Smoothies?

After having made the necessary changes in your diet, what else can you do when heartburn strikes?

  • Drink your smoothies slowly – In fact, you should try to drink and eat everything more slowly when you’re dealing with acid reflux.
  • Consume smaller meals – Larger meals may put pressure on your muscle that helps keep stomach acids from backing up into your esophagus.
  • Stand up straight  –  Acid reflux can get worse if you’re sitting or lying down . Whenever you feel heartburn or chest discomfort try standing up.
  • Try dopping a few pounds – Overweight is one of the most common causes of GERD and acid reflux. Those extra pounds may increase your abdominal pressure and make heartburn more likely.
  • Chew sugarless gums after meals – It can help promote salivation which may help neutralize the acid . Keep in mind, however, that peppermint-flavored gum should be avoided !
  • Avoid eating before going to bed – Having a meal three hours before lying down can make your symptoms worse . It’s best to have your anti-acid reflux smoothies early in the morning or for lunch.
  • Try baking soda with water – Baking soda mixed in water is considered being highly-alkaline. It may help you neutralize your stomach acids . A teaspoon dissolved in one glass of water should do the trick!

These were my favorite smoothie recipes for battling acid reflux. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for treating GERD and acid reflux. Although making healthier choices may help reduce the symptoms, you should always talk to your doctor before making changes in your diet. Do you have any smoothie recipes to share? I made the banana smoothie with the oats and almond milk, with hopes it will not affect my reflux. It was delicious and filling. I did add ice to give it that milkshake feel. The oats added some texture which helped in making it quite filling.
