One of Kosovo’s popular destinations , Prizren, is known as “Museum City” or the “prettiest city in Kosovo.” Set on the slopes of the Sar aka Sharr mountains in Kosovo and by the banks of the Prizren Bistrica (Lumbardhi River), this stunning city is the hotspot of Kosovo tourism and a definite must on any Kosovo travel itinerary .

With fantastic food, cultural events, and being surrounded by beautiful nature, there are many top things to see in Prizren. But if you’re looking for fun things to do in Prizren, Kosovo, here are our top choices in just a few days or perhaps a week.

Take In The Spectacular Views From The Prizren Fortress

The 15-minute walk up to the fortress’s ruins goes past the Orthodox Church of St. Savior’s ruins. You cannot miss a visit to this Prizren top attraction – grab your camera to take a picture of the city with the canon in the forefront.

Hike in the Sharr Mountains National Park

If you’re a nature lover looking for places to visit around Prizren, full of beautiful parks and natural landscape and sky-tipped mountains, the Sharr Mountains National Park is one of the best places to visit in Prizren.

The Sharr Mountains or Sar Mountains in South Eastern Kosovo will take your breath away, full of stunning alpine peaks and lush nature. If you have more time, book a local hiking trip with a tour guide that will take you all the way from Brod Village to the Black Peak and Gornje Lubinje that ends in Prizren.

See The Fabulous Sinan Pasha Mosque

Built by Sofi Sinan Pasha in 1615, the Sinan Pasha Mosque has an impressive dome and facade and a striking minaret. Built with stones taken from the nearby Serbian Orthodox Saint Archangels Monastery that was abandoned and had was in ruins by the 17th century.

Visible from most places in the city , the mosque has a striking interior that can be seen when prayer services are not on. The original stone flooring and carpentry work can still be seen at these well-known landmarks in Prizren. The walls of this Prizren tourist site are covered with quotes from the Quran and beautiful floral patterns. If you can only add one mosque to your list of things to do in Prizren, Kosovo, this Prizren sightseeing attraction is a must.

Take Pictures On The Old Stone Bridge

One of the best places to see in Prizren, the Old Stone Bridge, or ura e Gurit, crosses the Prizrenska Bistrica or Lumbardhi River in the town center. Joining the Shatervan square and the Sarachane square on different riversides, it is one of Kosovo’s best sites and one of the main Prizren landmarks. Built with stones in the latter half of the 15th century, and currently, among the top Prizren points of interest, the bridge is paved with cobblestone and has three arches.

It was destroyed in the flooding of November 1979 but restored in June 1982. A popular tourist thing to do in Prizren, Kosovo, is to take pictures on this Old Stone Bridge – be sure to wake up early and get your tourist-free shot.

Visit The St. George Cathedral

  Built by the Runoviq brothers between 1856 and 1887, the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Church of St. George was built near the Old Church of Saint George. The Cathedral was set on fire in 2004 and slowly restored over the next few years.

The simple minimalist inner walls contrast with the sturdy exterior stone walls.  Because permission from the priest is required to go inside, you’ll have to admire this top 10 site in Prizren from the outside. 

Our Lady Of Ljevis

Bogorodica Ljeviska Cathedral or Our Lady of Ljevis is one of the top things to see Prizren even if you cannot enter inside. This church is a must-see in Prizren and was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance by Serbia in 1990. It’s also on the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger as part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo.

Built in 1306 by Serbian King Stefan Milutin, the church was used as a mosque by the Ottoman Empire and converted back to a church in 1911. Bogorodica Ljeviska was built on the ruins of an older Byzantine Church called Metera Eleousa. Although it is one of Kosovo’s top 10 tourist attractions , the church is closed to visitors as the beautiful frescoes are still being renovated. We’ll let you know when it’s open again – until then, do not let that stop you from taking the 10-minute walk here from the city center to gaze at the magnificent architecture of Milutin’s 5-dome cross-shaped church.

Turkish Bath Aka The Hamam Of Gazi Mehmet Pasha

Close to the Emin Pasha Mosque on Adem Jashari Street, the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Hamamis is one of the places to see in Prizren, everyone we know raves about. Built between 1563 and 1574 by Gazi Mehmet Pasha, it’s one of the Balkans’ biggest and one of the top Kosovo tourist attractions. With three-foot thick walls and separate male and female sections, this attraction may really be a spot that showcases the difference between the past and the present day. Since 2000, it has been used as a zone for different cultural, artistic, and educational events. 

Crkva Sveta Nedelje

Crkva Sveta Nedelje, or the Church of the Holy Saviour, is a Serbian Orthodox Church built in 1330. This church was heavily damaged in the 2004 war, but it has since been rebuilt and can be visited and always makes the top Prizren lists.

Walk Through The Old Town

There are many things to do in Prizren that involve walking ( get good shoes! ), like walking through the Old Town. Gazing at the Old Ottoman architecture, before deciding on what small stores you’ll take a gander at, which traditional local handicrafts you’ll take home – and then finally where to enjoy the local foodie delights .

Travel To The Mirusha Falls

To reach one of the ten best places to visit in Kosovo, you’ll need to head a little over 62 km out of town to the Mirusha falls. The Mirusha Falls are actually more than one waterfall, a chain, so to say, which have created canyons along the riverbed, some of which have formed stunning rivers.

The tallest waterfall is the one between the 6th and 7th lakes, with a superb view. If you’re visiting Prizren with kids in the summer months, the lakes here are just perfect for swimming with the family !

View The Ottoman Architecture At The Emin Pasha Mosque

Situated close to the Gazi Mehmed Pasha Hamam on Bajrakli Street, the Bajrakli Mosque is undoubtedly one of the best things to see in Prizren. It is also named the Emin Pasha Mosque or Gazi Mehmet Pasha Mosque after its benefactor, Emin Pasha; it is one of the famous places in Kosovo.

Built in 1831 and smaller than the Sinan Pasah Mosque, it follows a similar construction, is rectangular, and has intricate wood carvings reflective of Ottoman architecture. Baroque paintings from the 19th century and blue and yellow floral motifs cover the internal walls. Many old marble tombstones can be seen in the yard, including that of Emin Pasha.

If you’re wondering what to do in Prizren at night? Or, for that matter, the top tourist attractions in Kosovo for foodies, we’ve got you covered. Prizren has many restaurants around town and many in the Shadervan area serving pizzas, grilled food, and local desserts . Here’s what to do in Prizren to feed your tummy:

Eat at Te Syla or Alhambra

Located in Sejdi Begu in Shadervan, the Te Syla is a riverside restaurant started by a street food vendor named Sylejman Dapko in 1967. The simple décor and superb location complement the exquisite dishes served here. If you visit, try the fantastic Balkan Grill, kebabs, grilled pastries, and other dishes. The official name of the restaurant though it is Alhambra.

Restaurant Marashi

At Vatrat Shqiptare in Prizren is the famous Marashi Restaurant. A favorite with tourists, the restaurant is right next to the river and has a modern ambiance and an outdoor terrace. All the food here is heavenly and cheap, from the soups and starters to the raki and the main course.

Kafe Libraria Sindikata

Located just 10 meters from Shadervan, this Kafe serves the best coffee in Prizren. If you prefer alcohol, the Kafe serves the Peja and Sabaja craft beers from Prishtina, as well as the best rakia in town. Set right on the street, it’s an excellent place to watch the world go by.

Besimi Beska

The colorful plates at Besimi Beska are so pretty; they’ll leave you not wanting to touch your food. The portions are generous, and the food is delicious. Try the mixed grill, the goulash , steaks, and local bread with cheese. The bread, naans, and pizzas here are made in traditional brick ovens. The restaurant is located in Shadervanit 56 in Old Town and has a small pond and trees in it.

Where To Stay In Prizren

Prizren has many good hotel choices near the Old Town or within walking distance of the major attractions. Here are our favorite places to stay in Prizren.

• A stone’s throw from the Kalaja Fortress in Old Town, the simple 4-star Hotel Tiffany, offers exceptional views of the city
• The simple family-run Prior Hotel offers 35 m²  family rooms  and triple rooms and is a 7-minute walk from Sinan Pasha Mosque
• Centrally located in Prizren, the Hotel Kacinari offers simple and comfortable 4-star rooms within 500 meters walk from all the attractions and restaurants
• Close to the City Centre and tourist attractions, Hotel Centrum Prizren also offers family rooms with balconies and free parking

My curated travel guide to Kosovo’s cultural capital shows you all the best things to do in Prizren .

As much as I loved Pristina , Kosovo’s hip capital, and Gjakova , the country’s most charming city, Prizren will always have a special place in my heart.

Kosovo’s ‘cultural capital’ is small but boasts a wonderful selection of museums, galleries, shops and cultural attractions (and, of course, cafes). It’s a great introduction to the country and a wonderful place to start your Kosovo itinerary .

Here are my 10 favourite things to do in Prizren along with a video and map, restaurant recommendations and travel tips.

One of the prettiest cities in the Balkans , Prizren has a special feel about it. It’s difficult to put into words, so I decided to make a video instead!

10 captivating things to do in Prizren

Here are my top recommendations for Prizren, including major attractions and hidden gems.

Cross the stone bridge & stroll the waterfront

Prizren Bistrica, with its iconic stone bridge and cafe-lined waterfront, is the heart of the city. Known locally as Shadervani, this is the main restaurant and cafe area where locals come to eat, drink and be merry.

We arrived on a holiday and couldn’t believe how many people were out and about walking the Bistrica River. The atmosphere on weekends is electric.

Stop by Shadervan Square & Fountain

Shadervan Square, with its marble fountain in the centre, is the perfect place for people-watching. This is the heart of Prizren’s Old Town and the most atmospheric spot in this beautiful city.

Go inside the Sinan Pasha Mosque

Prizren’s largest mosque is centrally located adjacent to the main square. Visitors are welcome inside as long as prayers aren’t in session. The white-washed interior is understated but beautiful.

Other prominent religious buildings to visit include the Emin Pasha Mosque.

Climb to Prizren Fortress for sunset

Located on a hill overlooking the city, this majestic fortress complex dates back to the 6th century and was added to in the 11th century. A short walk from the city centre, it’s fun to explore on foot.

The views from the top are breathtaking. No wonder locals flock here for sunset.

Visit the Albanian League of Prizren Museum

Established in the late 19th century, Prizren’s best-known museum is dedicated to the political party that has traditionally advocated for the rights of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.

The traditional house and grounds are beautiful; inside there’s a small display of costumes and an art gallery.

Peek at the UNESCO-listed Our Lady of Ljevis

One of four religious sites that make up the UNESCO-listed Medieval Monuments in Kosovo complex, this 14th century Orthodox church was all but ruined during riots in the city and is yet to be restored.

Visits are by appointment only – but you can still see the exterior of the church through the barbed wire. For the best views, climb the watchtower.

Buy a ticket for the Archaeological Museum & climb the watchtower

This should be on tourists’ radar but most people seem to bypass it (it’s not on Google Maps, which doesn’t help). Prizren’s Archaeological Museum is housed in a 15th-century hamam (bathhouse) and features an interesting display of pottery and metallic objects salvaged from the area.

The real highlight in the adjoining watchtower (this is supposedly the only example of a hammam-watchtower architectural hybrid in the Balkans!). From the top, you get an excellent aerial view of Our Lady of Ljevis. Entry costs just 1 Euro.

One of many green markets, we liked the laid-back atmosphere and friendly stallholders here.

Visit a filigree workshop

Kosovo has a long tradition of filigree silversmithing, and Prizren is the country’s official capital of filigree.

Filigran ShPK is a small workshop where about a dozen master craftspeople and apprentices make intricate jewellery according to traditional techniques first inherited from the Ottomans. The co-op leader, Faik Bamja, welcomes tourists to visit and watch the process, which involves using a blowtorch to melt the silver fragments.

It’s wonderful to watch – and if you’re lucky, one of the young apprentices will be there to explain things for you in English. Their products are sold all throughout Prizren and you can buy items directly from the workshop.

Browse the textile shops & wedding outfitters

There are a number of textile shops on Remzi Ademaj selling vintage fabrics and tablecloths as well as new outfits and traditional wedding attire.

The particular shop we visited (marked on the map below) has a sewing room out the back where you can watch the seamstresses at work.

Traditional Albanian wedding attire, all gold thread and velvet, is a sight to behold. There are dozens of shops along Rruga Adem Jashari that specialise in handmade costumes.

Where to eat & drink in Prizren

Prince coffee house.

The local branch of this wildly popular Kosovo coffee chain has outdoor seating and a beautifully decorated interior. Their Turkish coffee and macchiato (Kosovo’s coffee of choice) are both excellent; if it’s a hot day, opt for an iced coffee. An absolute icon – don’t leave Prizren without trying it!

‘Fortress’ Bar

It doesn’t have a Google Maps listing and we didn’t catch the name, but this bar near Prizren Fortress has fantastic city views from the outdoor terrace. It’s located right on the main path up from town – you can’t miss it.

Serving Albanian dishes and Kosovar specialties, this was probably our most memorable meal in Prizren. We really loved the flija (traditional layered pie served in slices) as a starter.

Alhambra (Te Syla)

A local favourite, this riverside restaurant serves the best Prizren-style qebapa (the Kosovar equivalent of cevapi) in town. We really loved the salads here as well.

Gjelltore Rexha

A no-frills local grill joint that serves up qebapa, pljeskavica (meat patty) and other Balkans favourites with a side salad and bread. Very reasonably priced.

Besimi-Beska

Located on the main square, this place is always full to the brim. Again, qebapa, chicken fillet and other grilled meats are the favourites. You can’t go wrong with a mixed grill and shopska salad.

Sarajevo Burek

Located opposite the fountain on the main square, this tiny joint serves up the most delicious burek in Prizren. Wash it down with a glass of ayran drinking yogurt Sarajevo-style .

Fellas Coffee & Kitchen

One of Prizren’s newer cafe/bars, this is a nice place for an afternoon beer or cocktail. The Western food menu is good for bar snacks and they also offer daily budget deals (we had the burrito and panna cotta combo).

Where to stay in Prizren

Mid-range hotel: We spent our 4 nights in Prizren at Hotel Denis . It’s located close to the bus station (handy if you’re arriving late at night like we did), but still walking distance to the centre of town. It’s a brand new build, so everything is sparkling and fresh. Rooms are simple but tastefully decorated, and most come with a small balcony.

The thing that really sold Hotel Denis to us was the free breakfast included in the room rate. Served at the gorgeous cafe downstairs, we got to choose between an omelette and pancakes each morning. In our opinion, the baristas here make the best macchiato in Prizren (no small feat!). Staff are incredibly hospitable and helpful.

Budget hotel: We had originally planned to stay at Driza’s House , but a booking clash meant that we couldn’t. This family run, hostel-style accommodation is set in a local home and receives high commendations from other travellers.

Luxury hotel: There are a few boutique and luxury hotels to choose from. Hotel Tiffany is located in the centre of town and also features an on-site restaurant.

How to get to Prizren

From Pristina: There are bus connections between Prizren and Pristina at least every hour. Travel time is between 1.5 and 2 hours. Check up-to-date times and fare information here .

From elsewhere in Kosovo: Bus travel within Kosovo is cheap and straightforward. We travelled onward to Gjakova, which took just over an hour and cost 2.5 Euros each.

From Montenegro: Since it can be problematic to enter Kosovo directly from Serbia, most people choose to transit through a bordering country. After a lot of research, we decided to enter Kosovo via Montenegro and arrived in Prizren from the beach town of Ulcinj.

Ulcinj is a favourite holiday spot for Kosovars, so regular buses ply the route (in summer, at least). The route goes through northern Albania via a new highway, making the trip relatively fast and easy. Travel time is approximately 5 hours (including border crossings), and the fare was 17.5 Euros ($19) when we travelled.

Prizren day tours

Prefer to visit with a guide on a day trip? This private tour departing Skopje, North Macedonia includes a visit to both Prizren and the nearby city of Pristina. Perfect for a whirlwind introduction to Kosovo’s two biggest cities.

If you plan to travel between North Macedonia and Albania and want to see Kosovo on the way, this private taxi transfer between Skopje and Tirana features a stopover in Prizren to break up the journey.

What to pack for Prizren

• A good quality backpack. I recommend using an anti-theft backpack for your day pack.
• A scarf (women). A lightweight cotton scarf is my number one travel essential. In Prizren, it will come in handy for covering your hair when visiting the mosque. This neutral travel scarf goes with anything and it even has a hidden pocket.
• Good walking shoes. Like all Kosovo’s cities, Prizren is very pedestrian friendly. Comfy shoes are essential – I love these ones for women, while my partner lives in these waterproof shoes .
• A reusable water bottle. I always travel with a S’Well water bottle .
• Biodegradable wet wipes. Try this convenient travel pack .
• Entertainment for bus journeys. I always carry my e-reader for passing the time on road journeys. If you have a travel buddy, pick up a headphone splitter – probably my favourite travel gadget of all time – so you can share a screen or a podcast.

Things to do in Prizren

Hi Emily, thank you so much for this well-curated guide. Since it is so hot in Prizren at the moment, we’ve done the walk starting at Sinan Pasha Mosque (the nature trail) which mostly leads through forest. It’s lovely, we’ve seen turtles, dozens of butterflies and lizzards. Another suggestion for everybody who loves veggie/vegan food is noja.kuzhine. The place opened during the pandemics, the food is fresh and very tasty. It’s a bit difficult to find, but they are on insta/facebook!

Things to Do in Prizren, Kosovo

Kosovo is not a destination many tourist tend to travel to. They are certainly missing out! With quaint villages, rugged peaks and amazing food, this country is well worth visiting. Prizren is Kosovo’s second city and is full of Balkan charm and history. In this post, we highlight all the very best things to do in Prizren, when to visit, how long you will need to explore the area and loads more!

Where is Prizren

Let’s start with the basics. Prizren is an ancient city in south western Kosovo, not far from the Albanian border. It is the second largest city in Kosovo and the historic capital. This small, quirky city has a beautiful location by the foothills of the Šar Mountains.

How do you get to Prizren?

There are several ways to get to Prizren. Most people visit either from Pristina, Kosovo’s capital city, or Tirana, in Albania.

Travelling from Pristina to Prizren

The drive from Pristina to Prizren takes just a little over an hour if you take the E851 south and the R7 route. There are regular buses between Pristina and Prizren as well – around every 2-3 hours. The bus ride takes about 2 hours and costs less than €5 each way.

Travelling from Tirana to Prizren

Driving from Tirana to Prizren takes you through the spectacular Albanian Alps. The drive is long and winding and takes over 2.5 hours, depending on Tirana traffic. Taking the bus to Prizren is an easier option if you don’t fancy the drive – and you can enjoy the amazing scenery.

There are 3 departures per day and the journey is around 3 hours. We bought our tickets onboard and it cost 2500Lek (€24) for a return trip. You will need to pay in cash. Tickets can be bought online in advance but they were a little more expensive.

What are the Best Things to Do in Prizren?

There are so many unexpected things to do in Kosovo. Here are the very best things to do in Prizren. Most of these sights are within the town and can be explored on foot.

Climb up to Prizren Fortress

This hilltop castle overlooks the city of Prizren and the river running through it. Only a shell is left today but it is certainly worth the hike up the hillside to see the amazing views across the city. There has been a fort on this location since the 6th century so it is a really beautiful historic site. It is also and excellent location for taking some panoramic photos. A visit to this fortress is certainly one of the best things to do in Prizren.

Things to do in Prizren – Sinan Pasha Mosque

The Sinan Pasha Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques we have visited. It was built in 1615 by Sofi Sinan Pasha, bey of Budim and sits right in the centre of the city. In the courtyard there is a beautiful fountain for ablutions and some little stalls.

Visit the Serbian Orthodox Church

Also known as Our Lady of Ljeviš, this Church was built in the 14th century by the King of Serbia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stunning frescos inside have been sadly damaged. However, it is currently being restored to its former glory.

Things to do in Prizren – Walk Across the Stone Bridge

The Ottoman stone bridge in Prizren is a fantastic view point in the city. Take a walk over the old stone crossing and gaze up the river or across to the Sinan Pasha Mosque or beyond, to the fortress. This is a great sport for taking photos in Prizren.

This upmarket, outdoor mall is located just near Prizren bus station. It’s a nice way to spend some time before taking the bus. There are many western shops and some nice cafes and restaurants to enjoy, as well as a cinema and bowling.

Things to do in Prizren – Try Some Amazing Food

There are plenty of great restaurants in town. However, our favourite is te Syla with its traditional dishes and seating on the banks of the river. It is pretty much in the centre of town and the staff are friendly and efficient.

If you are looking to stop for a coffee, try Ponte Coffe and More 2. The coffee and snacks are way better than the name!

Do a Little Hiking in Prizren

As Prizren is perched in the mountains, there are plenty of hiking options. The Sharr Mountains National Park is a must for all nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts. About an hours drive from Prizren, this is a perfect opportunity to get out of the city and into some incredible nature.

When to visit Prizren?

This town definitely gets busier in the summer! Everything is open, the streets are busy and restaurants are in high demand. However, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and the higher prices (still cheap by western standards) try visiting off season. Spring and autumn are beautiful as the weather is pleasant and the town is still quite quiet.

How Long to Visit For?

Prizren is pretty easy to visit from Pristina or from Tirana, Albania, and can be done comfortably in a day. You could also stay for a few days if you want to explore the surrounding countryside a bit more.

How expensive is it?

Kosovo is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to visit and it is really great value so your holiday money will go far! Kosovo also uses the Euro (unofficially). A coffee will cost about €1 – 1.50, a meal at one of the amazing BBQ restaurants will cost about €30 for two people and an air BnB can be found for around €40 per night. These are average prices during the summer months. Most things are cheaper off season.

Is Prizren safe?

Yes, Prizren is a safe town. As two females we never felt in danger at any point – including while using public transport. However, we were approached by quiet a few beggars when eating outside.

Generally, we found people to be very helpful and curious about what we thought of their country. Take the same precautions as you would in any other town and you will really enjoy your visit.

What to pack for a trip to Prizren

Here’s a super easy packing list to make sure you don’t forget any of the essentials

• Sunscreen 
• Sunglasses 
• A good book 
• Cell phone- keep in mind that Kosovo is not in the EU so data might be more expensive as roaming charges will apply.
• power bank and charger 
• Adaptor (European)
• Cash – Euros are unofficially used here
• Map downloaded on phone (especially if you’re going exploring)
• Walking boots or comfy shoes
• Day backpack
• Decent camera (or phone) with plenty of space for pictures of the spectacular scenery

The Language in Kosovo

Around 90% of Kosovans speak Albanian, with the rest speaking Serbian, Bosnian and even Turkish. In the cities, many younger people speak a little English but it is useful to learn a few phrases in Albanian. Like all Balkan languages, it is certainly not an easy language for English speakers. However, any attempt is greatly appreciated by the locals. Here are a few words to try out:

Welcome to Kosovo's prettiest city, a hidden gem of the Balkans. While this country isn't nearly as popular as its neighbors, there truly are some beautiful spots, and especially plenty of things to do in Prizren, one of the most underrated destinations in the area.

Prizren is loved by locals, and still under the radar for travelers. After visiting Pristina , we didn't truly have high expectations. But when we started driving through we started to realize that this was going to be our favorite city in all of Kosovo .

We're here to share the beauty of the area, how to get there, and all of the beautiful things to do in Prizren and around it. Let's jump right in so you can see why we recommend you add this adorable town to your list.

Where is Prizren, Kosovo ?

Prizren is located in the south west of Kosovo , tucked in the corner near the borders of Albania and Macedonia . Kosovo is a tiny landlocked country in the Balkans, surrounded by Montenegro and Albania to the west, Macedonia to the south, and Serbia to the north and east.

How to Get to Prizren, Kosovo

Prizren is the second most visited city in Kosovo, making it pretty well connected to other cities in Kosovo, as well as other big cities in the surrounding countries. 

Which Airport is Closest to Prizren?

Prizren itself doesn't have an airport. However, there are a few cities that have airports not too far away.

Visiting Prizren from Pristina

The most common way to visit Prizren is coming from Pristina , which is the capital of Kosovo. We had a rental car, and drove from Pristina, which is just a couple of hours away. We found this was the best way to get there, as there are some great places to explore between the two cities.

If you don't have a car or want to rent one, you can in fact take a bus to Prizren from Pristina from the main bus station. Buses go every 15-20 minutes, and the ride is 2 hours, with tickets costing 4-5 euros.

Visiting Prizren from Other Cities

Other close cities that you can travel from are Skopje ( Macedonia ), Tirana , Shkoder ( Albania ), or Podgorica ( Montenegro ). Just go to the central bus terminal in any of them and you can book them in person.

Flight Tip: In order to find which city is cheapest to fly to, you can go on Skyscanner and put "your country" to "everywhere" in the search box. The result will show you which of the surrounding countries are cheapest to fly to!

Entry Requirements for Kosovo

Now that you know where Prizren is located and how to get there, it's important to know the specific requirements for entering the country.

Visa Entry Requirements for Kosovo

Due to where the country of Kosovo is located, and the war in Kosovo a few decades ago, visiting Kosovo from Serbia can get complicated. However, visiting via another surrounding country is pretty easy (which the others are also closer to Prizren anyway).

Kosovo allows visa-free access for up to 90 days for all nationalities in Europe  (including the  UK ), the  USA , Australia, and plenty of other nationalities. If you aren't sure whether or not you do need a visa, make sure to check out the official website of foreign affairs in Kosovo , or to get in contact with your local embassy.

Covid Entry Requirements for Prizren, Kosovo

There aren't any restrictions anymore when it comes to Covid-19 for entering the country of Kosovo. Masks are also no longer mandatory, and it's pretty rare that you'll come across anyone wearing one.

Whenever traveling somewhere new, there may be certain things that differ from your home country, such as the language, currency, or even electrical outlets used. Here are a few of the "local adjustments" to keep in mind when traveling to Prizren, Kosovo.

What Language is Spoken in Prizren Kosovo?

The official language in Prizren is Albanian, which is classified as an Indo-European language. 92% of people living in Kosovo are actually of Albanian decent, which is why they speak Albanian, and not Serbian.

What is the Currency in Prizren, Kosovo?

The currency used in Kosovo is the euro. The center of Prizren has plenty of places that take credit cards. However, if you are visiting smaller restaurants or staying in cheaper accommodation, you may need to pay in cash. Always make sure to have euros on you in case the establishment doesn't accept credit cards.

Outlets Used in Prizren, Kosovo

The electrical outlets in Prizren, Kosovo support the same plug types as the rest of Europe , which is primarily for plug type F. The standard voltage in Prizren is 230 V and has a standard frequency of 50 Hz. If you are from the Americas, we definitely suggest purchasing a travel adapter that converts the energy too. This way you won't burn out your electronics.

Can I Drink the Water in Prizren?

The tap water in Prizren is totally safe to drink, so you'll have no issues drinking from the tap. They also have fountains in town where you can fill up your water bottle for free, so we suggest carrying a refillable water bottle with you.

Tipping in Prizren

The tipping culture in Kosovo can be a bit tricky, as many websites claim that tipping isn't common or necessary, However, many locals from Prizren told us that it is very much appreciated and it definitely seemed expected in the restaurants that we visited. We personally suggest leaving 10% as a tip (in cash) if you feel that you received good service while at a restaurant.

Things to Do in Prizren #1: Stroll Around the Old Town

Prizren is the most picturesque city in the country of Kosovo . The orange roofed buildings and beautiful mosques layer the hill up to the fortress, and is positioned right along the river that runs through the city. 

Take some time to walk around and admire the architecture, pop in the shops, and listen to the live music in the streets.

Things to Do in Prizren #2: Climb to the Top of the Fortress

One of the top things to do in Prizren is to go up to the fortress. It is completely free of charge to visit, and despite it looking like quite the hike, it really only takes around 10-15 minutes to get up to. 

The views leading up to the fortress are also super beautiful.

Perched right above the Old Town, the fortress has spectacular views of Prizren, and we particularly recommend visiting during sunset.

Things to Do in Prizren #3: Visit the Street of Umbrellas

While the Old Town of Prizren is super Instagrammable , there is also a beautiful street covered in umbrellas on the other side of the city. Head to the ABI Carshia Shopping Center and you'll find that the entrance has a long street covered in colorful umbrellas. Not only that, but here is where you'll find some of the better shopping in the city.

Things to Do in Prizren #4: Listen to Live Music Along the Water

Let's head back over to the Old Town. Right in the center you'll find restaurants and bars lines up right across the river. Once that evening hits, you'll find that there is live music playing right in front of them, and you can even here it from up at the fortress! Grab a drink or early dinner and enjoy the musicians singing local music while enjoying the views around you.

Things to Do in Prizren #5: Enjoy the Nightlife

We visited Prizren on the weekend, and thought we were just going to have a nice dinner. As soon as we walked outside to go get our car we heard loud and energetic music playing. We decided to following the noise, and found that ther were tons of people partying right in the street! There were people dancing on the bar, guys with giant drums, and locals dancing their asses off. Needless to say, the vibe was incredible!

Corner bar is the name of the first bar we went to, and then we found a second one that was equally good with live music, just across the river. 

One thing to keep in mind that is pretty much everyone smokes both inside and outside the bars, so chances you leave without wreaking of cigarettes are pretty low.

Things to Do in Prizren #6: Discover Jazinacko Lake

If you're looking for some beautiful nature outside of the city, there is an amazing lake that is pretty close to the big resorts on the countryside of Prizren. About 45 minutes away, this lake is a hidden gem of Kosovo. The trek is a big adventure though. At 18 km, it takes around 5-7 hours of hiking to make it to this beautiful spot and back.

Things to Do in Prizren #7: Go up to the Prizren Viewpoint

While one of the most popular things to do in Prizren is to visit the fortress for great views, there is actually another viewpoint that you can check out. The Prizren viewpoint is 15 minutes outside the Old Town. and can be reached with a car to show you some breathtaking views of the city and the mountains surrounding it.

Things to Do in Prizren #8: Visit the Monastery of the Holy Archangels

Speaking of gran views, on our way to our hotel outside the center of Prizren we saw a large stone structure that caught our attention. We decided to stop by, and realized that it is actually a large monastery.

The monastery is between the Old Town and the resorts of Prizren.

We roamed around and admired the monastery, and then also saw that there was a path up to the stone structure above it. A 15 minute steep hike along the rocks was definitely not the best choice for a hot summer day, but the views from the top truly were beautiful.

There were parts of the trail that felt particularly dangerous. We don't recommend people to go up here if they are not in great shape, or are not well prepared. Please proceed with extreme caution if you happen to choose to make the climb up, and don't go by yourself.

The climb up is steep, so be super careful.

Things to Do in Prizren #9: Relax at a Spa

One of our favorite things to do in Prizren that we experienced was relaxing at a spa. Our hotel (Hotel Sharri) had several heated pools, an infinity pool, and saunas. Located in the mountains, this was truly the perfect way to enjoy the scenery and take a break from the busy schedule that we had.

Things to Do in Prizren #10: Check Out a Nearby Waterfall

When we posted about the waterfall in Prizren, we actually had a ton of locals messaging us wondering where it was! It truly is a hidden gem of the area, and is a great place to stop. Located in the small town of Korishe just 10-15 minutes outside of the city is a waterfall tucked away in the middle of nowhere. 

The waterfall is just right next to the parking lot, and there is also a restaurant on site. One thing to note though, is that bathing suits are not permitted. Right when we were taking the photo below we were told we needed to put on clothes because it was a "family place". Truthfully, this is the first time in my life that I went to a piece of nature and was told that I couldn't wear a swimsuit, so if you do want to swim, we suggest going super early before anyone else is there.

Things to Do in Prizren: The Best Places to Eat & Drink

We had a limited time in Prizren, so we made sure to get some of the best local recommendations in town. Here are some of the spots that you should eat at in Prizren.

Hani I Jveter

This was recommended to us by several people, so we made a reservation just hours before. The restaurant is traditionally decorated, romantically lit, and has both indoor and outdoor seating, The food was incredible, and so was the service. They even have a special dish that you need to use a sword to cut off the top! If there is one place to eat in Prizren that we suggest you to try as a traveler, then it truly is this one.

Right along the river there are a few restaurants lined up. Starting from the afternoon, you can find live music, and crowds starting to flood the area. We chose to stop by this particular one to just have a drink. The atmosphere was great, and there was a table of locals next to us that had gotten this massive leg of meat to share for the table. Between the great live music, being on the water, and that delicious looking food, we definitely have this on our list of places to return to.

Looking for a cute spot to have a drink or to smoke some shisha? Well, thick spot is tucked down a small street, and super adorably decorated.

Quick bar has a super fun vibe to it.

Cioccolat Italiani

If you plan on going to the shopping center with all of the colorful umbrellas, then make sure to stop here for some coffee and ice cream. Everything is super easy, the servers are super nice, and the patio has a great vibe to it.

Getting Around Prizren, Kosovo

If you plan on just visiting the highlights of things to do in Prizren, then you can easily get around by foot. However, if you'd like to visit some of the surrounding spots such as the monastery or the waterfall, then it is definitely much more advised to have a car.

While we didn't see any car rental companies in Prizren, it will certainly be worth it to rent a car in Pristina, or from whatever other major city you are coming from.

We definitely recommend driving so that you can admire the surrounding landscapes of the area.

We found parking in the Old Town to be limited, but the lots were pretty affordable. If you do have a car, it will be easier to base yourself outside of the Old Town, or to find accommodation that includes parking.

Where to Stay in Prizren, Kosovo

There are two types of stays that we recommend for Prizren. The first is to stay inside the Old Town. This is where to top thing to do in Prizren area, and where you can find great restaurants and bars to go out at night. Overall, this is perfect for those that want convenience, or are young travelers. 

The Old Town is one of the best places to stay in Prizren.

Book a place to stay in Prizren's Old Town:

Another option that we love is to stay in the mountains outside the city. We stayed at Hotel Sharri, which was just a 15 minute drive outside the Old Town. It had an amazing spa, and overall a great vibe for being out in nature and having a relaxing stay. We had a car, which made this stay much easier for going back and forth to the center.

Is Prizren Safe?

Due to the conflict with Serbia, many people are scared to  go to Kosovo. H owever, after spending some time there, we can confidently  say that Kosovo i s super safe, especially the city of Prizren. People were extremely warm and welcoming, and we find that it can be a great destination for all types of travelers.

Other Things to Know About Visiting Prizren in Kosovo

Now that you know the best things to do in Prizren, how to get around, and other local adjustments, here are a few other things to keep in mind when visiting.

Weather in Prizren

Prizren experiences all four seasons, with hot summers, and cold winters. Being that it is surrounded by the mountains, it can get chilly at night from the end of summer to end of spring. We visited in the summer, and it was extremely hot during the day, with very pleasant temperatures at night time.

Prizren is a great place to experience both in winter and summer.

The Best Time to Visit Prizren, Kosovo

We personally think that Prizren is beautiful year round, and can be appreciated in all seasons. In the summer it had a really good vibe at night, and we loved hanging out at the pool at our resort in the mountains. We also think that it would be super beautiful covered in snow, and it would be a great time for a spa experience there.

Packing For a Trip to Prizren

If you plan on staying at a resort like us, or going to a spa, you'll want to bring a swimsuit, flip flops (our favorite are Havaianas ), and sunscreen if you plan on walking around. We also suggest comfortable shoes for climbing up to the fortress, and a reusable water bottle (we use Cafago to refill at the fountain in the center of the city.)

A Guide To Visiting Prizren, Kosovo

If Pristina is the modern face of Kosovo, Prizren is a glimpse into the past. The preserved city center is made up of cobblestone streets, ancient mosques, centuries old churches and numerous bridges that for ages have straddled the Prizren Bistrica River. Overhead, a medieval fortress looms on the hilltop, keeping an eye on the city of Prizren below.

While Prizren’s old historic center is easily navigated, there is limited (and sometimes confusing and/or conflicting) information provided for tourists. To assist fellow travelers visiting Prizren, we’ve detailed a self-guided Prizren walking tour (with a map and turn-by-turn directions) and have also included recommendations for food, drink and accommodations. 

Understand Visiting Prizren, Kosovo

The history of Prizren dates to Ancient times, with the first mention of the city in the 2 nd century AD.  Since that time, the land has been claimed by many different kingdoms- including Romans, Bulgarians, Byzantines, Serbians and Ottomans. In 1912, after the First Balkan War, Prizren became part of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Then, in 1916, it was occupied by the Kingdom of Bulgaria and, in 1918, it was included in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929. After the collapse of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Prizren remained a part of Serbia in the Province of Kosovo. In 2008, when Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, Prizren became the second largest city in the new country.

Prizren’s buildings and urban plan have been influenced by rulers of the past; Serbians built Orthodox churches and Ottomans built mosques. Throughout history, regime changes often resulted in the eviction or death of the conquered citizens.

Tensions still exist between different ethnic groups – most notably between Albanians and Serbs. Today, Albanians make up the majority of the population in Prizren (80%+). There are also Bosniaks, Turks and Romas living in the municipality, but very few Serbs remain.

The city was largely spared by the 1999 Kosovo War , but a 2004 uprising of ethnic Albanians targeted the small population of Serbs living in Prizren. In the violent unrest, seven historic Serbian Orthodox churches were destroyed, including a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Our Lady of Ljevis, which was built in 1307. The hillside Serbian neighborhood in Prizren was also severely damaged and houses were set on fire.  

Many of the sites remain in ruins and are closed to visitors. Guard shacks stand at church entrances, although not all are manned; instead, padlocks and barbed wire keep people from entering. However, taking a stroll through the city to the churches, mosques and other historic sites help visitors to understand the complex history of Prizren.

Prizren Self-Guided Walking Tour

Our Prizren self-guided walking tour makes a loop through the city and then continues up to the fortress, by way of a one-hour hike on a trail through the forest. As previously stated, many of the 15 historic sights in Prizren are not open to visitors, but are still interesting to see from the outside. The total time needed for this Prizren walking tour is approximately three hours, including time for brief stops.

#2 Sinan Pasha Mosque Prizren

Built in 1615 using stones from the nearby Serbian Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Archangels, the Sinan Pasha Mosque is listed as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance. The minaret, at a height of 143 feet, is easy to spot from both the river and the Prizren fortress.

The mosque is open to visitors; a woman working there, kindly took us by hand to show us the features of the most famous Prizren mosque. (Removing shoes prior to entering is required, headcover for women is not required, photography is allowed, but not of people praying.)

#13 Prizren Fortress

Prizren Fortress, also called Kalaja, sits strategically on a hilltop above the river – and is another structure in Prizren recognized as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance. While some evidence suggests that part of the fortress could date to the 6 th century, it is known that it was either built or expanded on between 1331 and 1355.

Take in the best views of Prizren from the various points. Look out over area and count the number of minarets that pierce the sky. Where To Eat and Drink While Visiting Prizren

Fare in Prizren, like the rest of Kosovo and the Balkans, is heavy on the meat. The food tends to be both ridiculously affordable and incredibly filling. In the city center, there are many eateries to choose from – including take-away kiosks, sit-down fast-food shops and traditional restaurants – although there is little variety in cuisine. The standard options include grilled meat, regional dishes and pizza.

While visiting Prizren, eating at a qebaptore is an experience that shouldn’t be missed. The barbecues crank out value platters of incredible amounts of meat. Fast-food qebaptores are easy to spot, as the grill usually protrudes from the front of the shop, proudly displaying heaps of grilling meat. For the same fare with a table service experience, we recommend the popular Te Syla restaurant.

Burek remains one of our regional favorites for a cheap and filling meal. One portion of the flaky, meat- or cheese-filled pastry, which is often accompanied by plain, drinkable yogurt, costs very little and constitutes an entire meal. We haven’t eaten burek that we didn’t like, but locals told us the best place for burek in Prizren is Sarajeva, and they weren’t wrong!  

Regardless of what you eat in Prizren, we recommend spending some time at one of the many cafes or bars in the city center. From intimate cafes with fireplaces to modern techno bars with thumping music, just stroll through Prizren until one grabs your attention.

Sip a macchiato (which locals pridefully claim are better than those in Italy), drink a Kosovo Peja beer or brave the potent raki. Find a seat where you can watch the people and get a good dose of the local life in Prizren. The main square is always a good bet, but places along the river are also atmospheric. Two low-key bars we liked were Bar Aca and Te Kinezi, both of which have Kosovo craft beer, Sabaja.

Where To Stay While Visiting Prizren

We usually prefer to stay in Airbnb apartments rather than hotels, but for our short stay in Prizren, we didn’t have much luck finding an apartment. Instead, we stayed at the Prizreni Hotel , which is ideally located in the center of the old town next to the Sinan Pasha Mosque. The room was clean and comfortable and included a made-to-order, hot breakfast.

Prizren: The Mosques & Monuments of Ottoman Kosovo

Prizren, the cultural capital of Ottoman Kosovo during the centuries-long occupation, remains the country’s most atmospheric city. And despite being Kosovo’s second-largest, Prizren is among the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the Balkans. If it weren’t for all the traffic, a walk through Prizren really would feel like a trip back to the Middle Ages. In the following Prizren guide, we’ll be covering the top things to do and see in town, all of which can easily be explored in a day.

Provided the weather is nice, it would be a good idea to start your day at Prizren Fortress. Not only does it offer clear views of all the other landmarks featured in this Prizren guide, but the history of the fortress is the history of Prizren itself.

There are actually two ways to get to the top: one via a path from the city center, and another longer path via a park on the eastern side of the hill by the Bistrica River. 

The path starting from the park is largely forested and feels more like a hike, though you should still be able to make it to the top in around 20 minutes.

I ended up trying both ways. After a rainy morning, the sun suddenly appeared for a couple of hours in the afternoon, prompting me to return for a second visit.

The hill on which the fortress stands was settled as early as the Late Bronze Age, or around 3,000 years ago. The first fortification, however, was built in the early Byzantine era, sometime in the 4th-5th centuries AD.

Following the Byzantines, the fortress was controlled by the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty for much of the 13th and 14th centuries. Then, following a series of feudal rulers vying for control, the Ottomans took over Prizren and the fortress in 1450. 

Much of the surviving structures date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Apparently, throughout the 1900s, stone from the fortress was regularly usurped to build numerous structures around town, including Prizren’s first music school in 1947.

As such, many of the more impressive structures at Prizren fortress today are actually more recent reconstructions. But some original portions remain intact, including a secret tunnel that was extremely useful during times when the castle was under siege.

Additionally, one can find the foundations of a mosque built in 1808, while the main gate survives in good condition as well.

Overlooking the town, you can get an excellent view of the Prizren Bistrica, the river which cuts through the city center. And looking over to the left, you can also spot the Church of the Holy Savior, a Serbian Orthodox Church established in the 14th century.

While the church is still active, it’s nearly always locked for tourists, so it’s difficult to get a decent view from close up. The area surrounding the top of the hill, in fact, was once home to Prizren’s Serb population, which had to flee during the war in the ’90s. 

As you walk up from the town center, you’ll pass by numerous abandoned houses along the way, and it’s unclear what the future holds for this part of town.

Prizren's Ottoman Architecture

Similar to the Albanian towns of Berat and  Gjirokastër , or Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Mostar , wandering through Prizren gives one an excellent sense of what a thriving city would’ve looked and felt like during Ottoman times. 

The Ottomans controlled Prizren for hundreds of years, constructing a myriad of impressive buildings and monuments in what was considered Kosovo’s intellectual capital.

In addition to the larger Ottoman mosques (covered below in this Prizren guide), there are also numerous smaller gems to spot around town. Among them is the Stone Bridge, which dates back to the 16th century.

Situated just in front of the Sinan Pasha Mosque, it was destroyed by floods in 1979 and was reconstructed a few years later.

Not far away, located in the center of a public square within Prizren’s lively bazaar area, is the Shadervani. According to legend, if one drinks water from the fountain, they’re destined to return someday. 

As I did indeed fill up my water bottle here, only time will tell if the legend is true.

Sinan Pasha Mosque

Prizren contains around 40 mosques in total. But out of all of them, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, which overlooks the city center, is the most prominent. Built in 1615, it was named after a local vizier.

The mosque’s spacious interior stretches out to 14 x 14 m. And much of it has been painted in colorful patterns and Arabic script. In terms of style, the art is reminiscent of the Painted Mosque in Tetovo , North Macedonia, right on the other side of the Shar Mountains.

Interestingly, the paintings were added in the 19th century, around the same time the Painted Mosque was rebuilt. Sadly, however, some of the original art has been lost due to water leakages. 

As a result, large sections of the walls remain blank white. In the 2010s, the mosque and garden outside were restored with help from the Turkish government.

(Note that for whatever reason, people are only allowed to take photos inside with their cellphones.)

Emin Pasha Mosque

Speaking of colorful mosques, the Emin Pasha Mosque on the other side of the river is also worth a visit.

Established in 1832 in honor of Emin Pasha, governor of Prizren from 1789-1843, it was designed by architect Mehmet Emini. The mosque’s arched facade is adorned with elegant blue and white floral motifs, giving it a unique look for the region.

The mosque appeared to be closed during my visit. But pictures of the interior reveal even more blue and white geometrical patterns and nature scenery, easily rivaling the artwork of the more famous Sinan Pasha Mosque.

This mosque was also restored with help from the Turkish government as recently as 2016.

Bajrakli Mosque

Yet another significant mosque is the Bajrakli Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Gazi Mehmed Pasha.

Established in 1573, the mosque was part of a larger complex including a madrasa (theological school) and library. And as we’ll cover below, the building now known as the Albanian League of Prizren was originally built by Gazi Mehmed Pasha as well. 

The impressive mosque features a square base and an elegant wooden roof over its entrance facade.

Gazi Mehmed Pasha Hammam

Also part of the massive Bajrakli Mosque complex was the Gazi Mehmed Pasha Hammam, or bathhouse. Incredibly, it’s considered to be one of the biggest Ottoman hammams in all of the Balkans.

While it previously functioned as a museum and cultural space, entry was prohibited at the time of my visit. The exterior seems to have been recently restored, so it’s possible that something new is being worked on within.

Just down the street from the hammam is a mysterious, lone minaret. It was previously part of the Arasta Mosque, originally built in 1594. Obviously, nothing but this minaret survives – but why?

Infuriatingly, the historic structure was demolished by the local government in the 1960s in order to make room for the new post office nearby.

Prizren is also home to numerous historic tekkes, or dervish lodges . In a peaceful spot along the river, not far from the Albanian League of Prizren, you’ll spot a small structure which dates back to the 16th century. 

While I didn’t step inside, it may actually be a turbe , or tomb of a dervish saint.

Prizren happens to be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, but few visitors would realize it. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Ljeviš, a Serbian Orthodox church, is surrounded by barbed wire and under the constant watch of a local policeman. 

Today, few visitors get the opportunity to enter without special permission.

The church was constructed in the 14th century by Serbian king Stefan Milutin, who was also responsible for Gračanica Monastery outside of Pristina. Converted to a mosque during Ottoman times, it was changed back to a church in the 20th century. 

Unfortunately, however, the church was damaged during ethnic tensions in 2004. And it’s largely remained off-limits ever since.

Our Lady of Ljeviš is renowned for its frescoes, and those traveling to Belgrade can see a large fragment on display at the National Museum of Serbia.

Prizren is also home to a few other Serbian Orthodox Churches, including the Church of the Holy Savior, visible from Prizren Fortress (see above). In the town center, meanwhile, is the impressive Church of Saint George, though photography is prohibited there.

Additionally, you can also find the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Succour, constructed in the year 1870.

One of the few attractions of this Prizren guide that’s not a religious monument is the building that housed the Albanian League of Prizren, formed on June 10, 1878.

The League’s initial purpose was to unite four Ottoman districts that had majority ethnic Albanian populations. Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, the Ottomans’ grip on the Balkans was weakening, and nations like Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece began expanding their territories. 

The League, therefore, was determined to protect what they deemed as Albanian land.

Originally, the League intended to stay loyal to the Ottoman Empire in return for protection and greater autonomy. But after the Ottomans rejected many of the Albanians’ demands, the League, comprised of 30,000 armed men, turned against Constantinople and declared all-out war.

While the Albanians were able to maintain control over the geographical region of Epirus, they lost control of Albanian-majority Ulcinj to Montenegro. And ultimately, the League was crushed in 1881, three years after its founding.

The Albanian League of Prizren may have not been tremendously impactful politically, but it helped shape Albanian national identity in addition to promoting Albanian language education.

As mentioned, the building complex was originally constructed in the 16th century as part of the nearby Bajrakli Mosque.

For a small entrance fee, visitors can walk through the halls to see an interesting museum that’s part historical, part art gallery and part ethnographic.

The small building closest to the road, meanwhile, was supposedly where many of the most important meetings took place. It was actually destroyed by Serbian forces in 1999, along with the statues of the League’s founders. Obviously, they’ve been subsequently rebuilt.

Additional Info

As Kosovo’s second-largest city, Prizren is well-connected by bus. The journey from either Pristina or Peja lasts around 2 hours. There are also direct buses connecting it with Tirana , Albania, Ulcinj, Montenegro, Skopje , North Macedonia and even Istanbul , Turkey.

Additionally, there are numerous direct buses between Prizren and various cities in Serbia.

Note : If you’re visiting Kosovo first and then plan to visit Serbia later, you must enter and exit Kosovo via a third country and then enter Serbia directly. As Serbia considers Kosovo to be part of its territory, there is no passport check when traveling from Kosovo to Serbia. Thus, when leaving Serbia, your passport will be lacking an entry stamp which can get you into trouble at the border.

You can, however, enter Kosovo from Serbia and then go back into Serbia again.

Kosovo has an organized and well-functioning bus system. Buses leave on a set schedule, and most buses in Kosovo are larger coach buses as opposed to cramped minivans.

Prizren’s bus station is easily walkable from the city center and all the locations featured in this Prizren guide.

Prizren has plenty of hotels to choose from, and the city is small enough that location isn’t particularly important. All of the locations in the Prizren guide above should be accessible on foot as long as you’re relatively close to center.

I enjoyed my stay at Zani Hostel , just a few minutes away from the bus station but also an easy walk to the attractions of the Old Town.

My room was spacious and the Wifi was fast. Furthermore, the owner was incredibly helpful with arranging my onward bus trip to Shkodër , Albania, as online info about the journey was very hard to come by.

The only downside was the bathroom situation. The main shared bathroom lacked a mirror for some reason, with it being placed out in the hallway instead.

5 Best Things to Do on a Day Trip from Pristina to Prizren

As you might have seen in my recent Pristina travel guide , this up-and-coming capital city isn’t exactly chock-full of major tourist attractions. That’s why, when we found ourselves with some spare time, we decided to see what else Europe’s youngest country has to offer.

One of the cool things about Kosovo is that there’s a whole lot of cultural and natural wonders to discover just a short trip away. After doing some online research and seeing reports about rising tensions in Mitrovica, we decided on a day trip to Prizren instead.

As one of the oldest cities in Kosovo and the western Balkans, Prizren is the place to visit if you want to peek into the country’s complex past. So, let me take you on a journey and show you some of the best places to see in Prizren in a day. From a Bronze Age fortress looking out over the city, through multiple medieval mosques and churches, to modern coffee houses and shops, there’s something for everyone!

How to get from Pristina to Prizren

Unless you have a car, the best way to get from Pristina to Prizren is by hopping on a bus. The website I found most reliable for checking timetables in the Balkans is Balkan Viator . However, as Kosovo’s second-largest city, Prizren is a really popular spot among locals. There are more buses running than what you’ll find online, roughly every 15 to 20 minutes. This means it’s always a good idea to double-check directly at the Pristina Bus Station, just like we did.

To get to the station, we used public transport, which cost €0.40 for a single ticket. Once you’re on the bus, just take a seat and wait for the ticket seller to come to you. One thing we always did was to let them know where we were heading. This way, since we were usually the only tourists on board, they always made sure we got off at the right stop, as there are no bus stop announcements.

The journey from Pristina to Prizren takes about 2 hours, and we paid €5 each way. One interesting thing I noticed about travelling on buses in Kosovo is that the bus driver would stop whenever someone flagged them down. So, even if you missed your bus at the station, you could still hop on (or off) anywhere along the route!

Why is Prizren worth visiting?

As the historical capital of Kosovo, the city of Prizren has changed hands multiple times throughout the centuries. From Romans to Byzantines to Ottomans and Serbians, its cultural heritage has been shaped by a unique mix of cultures and religions. You can now see this rare blend as you wander around the city. I mean, how many places can you think of that have a mosque, an Orthodox Church, and a Roman Catholic Church standing side by side in perfect harmony?

Prizren also remains one of the key craft centres in the Balkans. Back in the day, it was linked to the Silk Road, connecting Pristina, Skopje, Tirana, and Montenegro. As a result, many different kinds of crafts were developed in the city, reaching the maximum of 124 (!) in the second half of the 19th century. Today, the most popular handicraft in Prizren is creating filigree jewellery, with several family businesses working hard to keep this centuries-old tradition alive.

Prizren is also sometimes called the “museum under the open sky” due to its archeological heritage, with historians saying that it’s a city where every stone has a story to tell. The stunning mountains and picturesque bridges over the Bistrica River that splits the city make you want to uncover them all. And, to top it off, there are also several festivals taking place in the city, including the International Documentary and Short Film Festival, DokuFest.

So, now that it’s hopefully on your bucket list, let’s check out some of the best things to do in Prizren…

What to do in Prizren

Have a tasty breakfast at prince coffee house.

One thing we noticed about many cafés in Pristina was that while they opened early, they didn’t start serving breakfast until later (typically 10 or 11 am) . That’s why the first thing on our agenda when we got to Prizren was finding somewhere to eat.

The most popular coffee chain in Kosovo is Prince Coffee House, so we decided to give it a go. With over 50 coffee recipes and coffee shops in places like NYC or Vienna, we thought they must be doing something right. Plus, its location right by the waterfront makes it the perfect spot to sit and people watch.

We got some iced coffees and panini sandwiches with Prosciutto ham, tomatoes, mozzarella, lettuce, and pesto. For dessert, we decided to try the traditional Trilece cake, which is a light sponge cake that’s soaked in 3 different types of milk. They also gave us a Balkan-style raffaello on the house, which was absolutely brilliant since it’s one of my favourite treats! Everything was really tasty and super affordable, so I would highly recommend Prince Coffee House to anyone visiting Prizren.

One thing I didn’t like about this place was the number of Roma children that came up to us begging for money. Roma Albanians often cross the Kosovo border illegally and exploit their children for money. They force them to spend entire days asking for money in the streets, often at the cost of their education and safety. It’s a big problem in Kosovo that’s especially evident in Prizren, and it’s really sad to see.

Cross the historic Old Stone Bridge

While there are multiple bridges connecting the two sides of Prizren, the Old Stone Bridge is the city’s symbol. Built sometime between the end of the 15th and the start of the 16th century, it played a big part in the development of trade and life in the city.

The original Ottoman-style bridge was destroyed during the flood of 1979. As the people of Prizren were emotionally attached to it, it was rebuilt 3 years later.

As you travel around the Balkans, the design of this bridge might seem familiar. After all, you can find similar ones in Mostar or even Skopje. Still, you can’t miss it when you’re in Prizren, as it’s right in the city centre. I personally like it because of the view of the hillside houses, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, and the Prizren Fortress in the background. It’s the perfect photo spot, as you can get all of Prizren’s biggest landmarks in one frame.

Explore the rich heritage of the Church of the Holy Saviour

The next stop on our Prizren itinerary was a hike up to the Prizren Fortress. The route begins next to the Sinan Pasha Mosque, which I’m about to tell you more about later. About halfway through your walk, you can see the ruins of the Church of the Holy Saviour, a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox Church.

From the outside, it might look like a fully intact church, but its roof and interior were completely destroyed during the unrest in Kosovo in 2004. To prevent further damage, they locked the gate and started restricting access to the church.

Some people online mentioned they had to pay a €2 entrance fee to get in. Considering it’s a disused church, I personally found this a little strange. When we arrived, we were the only people there and the gates were wide open. There were also no donation boxes in sight, so we just went in.

Shortly after we finished admiring the old frescoes and taking footage, a group of people arrived to start setting up furniture for some kind of a special event, so we got incredibly lucky!

I suppose it’s even more special when you’re exploring with a guide who can recount the story from a local’s perspective. Still, if you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend making a stop at the Church of the Holy Saviour. Plus, you get a stunning panoramic view of Prizren from there!

Climb to the top of the Prizren Fortress

It’s a bit of a walk to get to the Prizren Fortress, or Kalaja in Albanian, but the fantastic 360-degree view of Prizren makes it worth the effort. The hike should probably take around 15-20 minutes, but we ended up taking longer as we slowly explored the Church of the Holy Saviour. It was also a scorching hot day, which zapped our energy faster. Don’t worry, though – there’s a small shop selling drinks and ice cream at the top of the hill if you need a refreshment.

Entry to the fortress is free of charge. I find it absolutely fascinating that the site where it stands dates back to the Bronze Age (around 2000 BC) , even though the first fortress was built in the 6th century by the Byzantines. Most of what you can currently see is a result of an 18th-century reconstruction, but it’s impressive nevertheless.

If you’re expecting a museum, you won’t find anything other than a few signs at the top. So, if you prefer structured visits, you might be better off finding a guided tour online. Otherwise, if you want to explore at your own pace, I’d say it shouldn’t take you more than an hour.

For more adventurous folks, there are some wooden stairs you can climb up to get to the ledge. There were no restrictions, so you could easily roam around the entire site. I was perfectly content with the tourist paths, but here’s a little sneak peek of what to expect:

Visit the Ottoman Sinan Pasha Mosque

We were initially planning to visit here before our hike, but we heard the call to prayers and decided to return later. I’ve always wanted to visit a mosque, but I wasn’t sure how to go about it. If you’re feeling this way too, the Sinan Pasha Mosque is the perfect place for first-timers.

Before you go in, there’s a sign listing all the rules. First of all, you need to take off your shoes and leave them on the steps. As a woman, I had to cover myself all the way down to my ankles. I brought my own jacket and a shawl, but there was a nice elderly lady inside providing scarves. She also very kindly helped me put it on, which looked much better than anything I would’ve managed!

As the sign outside said no photos, I respectfully kept my camera away. However, the lady approached us and said we could take photos if we wanted to. As we were leaving, she even asked if they turned out okay. It really put me at ease and made me feel welcome.

The 17th-century mosque itself was really beautiful too, with floral patterns and Qur’an verses covering its walls and the dome. Interestingly enough, they used stones from a former Serbian Orthodox monastery for its construction. That’s why parts of the mosque were demolished during the times of the old Yugoslavia. After the liberation, renovation works took place, gradually restoring the mosque to its former glory. If you ever find yourself in Prizren, I’d highly recommend coming in to see the murals and get a feel of the atmosphere.

I just came back to Prishtina from Prizren, and I must say, it is an absolutely breathtaking city! The city’s architecture, views, and delightful coffee (and ice cream haha) surpassed all expectations. I initially planned for a three-day visit to Kosovo from Albania, thinking it would be sufficient. However, I now realize that my time here was far too short 🙁

I can totally relate – I wouldn’t mind spending a few more days in Kosovo either ☺️ I didn’t know what to expect prior to our visit, but I really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere, the architecture in Prizren, and, of course, the coffee!
