Private Guided Tours from Quito
- January 12, 2022
- Nicolás Ponce
Hiring a private guide to discover Quito and its surroundings offers travelers flexibility, exclusivity and the expertise of local savior-faire. Our recommendation is to mix into your itineraries private guided tours when possible with days in which you can just mosey about at your pace.
Guided Full Day, Quito Historic Center
Old town Quito is a fabulous place to set out and explore on your own. But it is also the largest historic center in the Americas. So seeing it all in a short period of time is not really a possibility. What are the best places to stop at? Which are the quaintest corners nobody talks about? Where should you grab a bite? Should you just blindly trust Trip Advisor? Or can an experienced local private guide really tell you where the quality is? We venture to say yes. And old town Quito, like any city in the world, has its hits and misses. So, go to the right places with the help of first-rate local private guides and get the best out of this exhilarating experience.
Our staff’s favorite guided routes in Quito
Historic Quito is all about its heritage buildings, which hold centuries of astounding religious art, among the best in all of Spanish America. Quito was actually considered an artistic hub during Spanish Colonial times , so it makes sense to spend at least a morning exploring the city’s unique cultural importance. A tour of Colonial churches and heritage sites will offer a fascinating perspective on this subject, especially when visiting the arresting La Compañía and San Francisco Church , the largest religious complex in the Americas.
Another great place to set out and discover in old town Quito are its barrios, or neighborhoods . Discover the special trades that Quiteños continue to cherish, including handmade wood toy-making or seamstresses that make the most unexpected outfits for baby Jesuses…
You may also want take the Quito Cable Car to Pichincha volcano and, together with an expert private guide, explore the high páramo, perhaps even make it to the summit of the mountain itself.
Guided tours to Otavalo and the north
Quito is only a two-hour’s drive from the craft town of Otavalo , known for hosting the largest craft fair in the Americas. Every Saturday, the town is overflowing with handmade items and clothing, including the classic indigenous poncho . With a guided tour, bypass less-interesting mass-produced clothing stalls and head to picturesque textile workshops in the outskirts of town where local artisans weave unique items including beautiful wool sweaters, some of which can take several months to complete.
Next to Otavalo, discover Cotacachi , a very popular destination for expats and digital nomads, due to its connection with nature, its beautiful rural environment, its close-knit friendly indigenous community, and cultural importance. This town is known for its leather products and a beautiful crater lake Cuicocha , only twenty minutes away, in the heart of the volcano on which the town lies.
The Otavalo area is known for its beautiful mountain lakes, including San Pablo Lake, which sits placidly at the foot of Mount Imbabura. In our guided tours, we offer the most exhilarating sights and adventures here, so don’t hesitate to contact us.
The Avenue of the Volcanoes
Don’t miss out on private guided tours to Ecuador’s major snow-capped volcanoes and learn about the human history and fascinating nature that make them so special. Visit Cotopaxi, Quilotoa or even Chimborazo, beautiful mountains that offer a unique connection with nature. Guided tours can also take you to nearby communities to get to know how livelihoods are connected to the mighty volcanoes that surround them. The scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt once mentioned his surprise at how “Ecuadorians sleep calmly amongst raging volcanoes”. Unravel this mystery and discover the idiosyncrasies
Tours to Mindo and the Andean cloud forests from Quito
One of the most interesting things about Quito is the fact that, depending on which direction you travel, you will be setting out into completely different, almost contradictory, landscapes. As mentioned before, you can set out to a spring-like lake-ridden environment near Otavalo or up to the high paramo, dominated by almost Arctic weather at the foot of high mountain peaks. And then, you can go west, quickly entering a jungle world: Mindo and its cloud forests.
Mindo has become a prime eco-tourism hub, known for its nature walks in lush forests chock-filled with birds, butterflies, orchids and… bears. The entire area is fascinating and we highly recommend you visit it with a private local guide, who will not only lead you down the right trails but also show you the astounding wildlife that makes this corner of the country so sought after by naturalists and nature-lovers. Another popular cloud forest destination is Baños de Agua Santa (“Holy Water Baths” in English), or simply Baños , to most travelers. Located about 2-3 hours from Quito, on the Eastern slope of the Andes, it’s also considered the gateway to the Amazon. Guided tours can take you to the famous “swing at the end of the world” and the beautiful waterfalls that surround the area, as well as take you deeper into the Amazon, towards Puyo and the headwaters of the Amazon Basin.
Ecuador 10-day itinerary
Though ten days in a country offers a better feel of what that country has to offer, Ecuador doubles-down on offering the experience of nature at its most extreme and most diverse… If 5 days takes us up and down the Ecuadorian rollercoaster, 10 days is double the fun. So, sit back and enjoy the
Ecuador 5-day itinerary
Five days in Ecuador is clearly not enough to get to know the country well, but there’s one thing that five days in Ecuador can do. And that is give you a peek at its amazing diversity and distinct “worlds”. Just for that experience alone, 5 days in Ecuador is an exciting adventure that few

“ Great day out with Eliza ”
Eliza gave us a great day out while we were in Quito. She picked us up from our hotel (she had a driver for the day) and talked to us on our way to Otavalo, telling us a lot of interesting information about Ecuador and Quito. She came round the market with us in Otavalo and gave some very helpful advice. We went for a short walk and to visit a gallery where we were shown how the indigenous people make their beautiful clothes and artworks. We had lunch together and were finally back at our hotel about 5.45. Eliza went out of her way to help us find a particular item, stopping at a supermarket especially. Altogether a great day out. Do not hesitate to use Eliza as your guide.
“ Great overview! ”
We got to spend a wonderful few hours getting an overview of the old town and seeing many interesting viewpoints. We were lucky to have a nice clear night and had great panoramas of the city. Eliza gave us great and interesting information throughout and really catered to what we wanted. It was a great tour!
Hummingbirds and Cable car
“ Amazing time! ”
We visited a hummingbird cafe about an hour and 15 min away from downtown Quito. It was an amazing experience. The hummingbirds would land in your hands and eat! The cafe also had great empanadas. We spent about an hour there and then moved on to the cable car. Along the way Eliza was great about passing along interesting details and answering any questions that we had. The view from the top of the cable car was incredible. Overall, it was a wonderful day with Eliza!

things to do in the old town quito
Welcome to our comprehensive guide to Quito’s Historic District, a captivating destination in South America that boasts a rich cultural heritage and a multitude of attractions. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating history, vibrant architecture, and must-visit landmarks of this enchanting district. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking an immersive cultural experience, Quito’s Historic District has something to offer for everyone.
Unveiling the Historical Significance
Quito’s Historic District, also known as “Centro Histórico,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the heart of Ecuador’s capital city. It stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past, showcasing an intriguing blend of Spanish influence and indigenous heritage. Exploring this district is like stepping back in time, as its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and meticulously preserved buildings narrate stories of a bygone era.
Marvels of Colonial Architecture
One of the standout features of Quito’s Historic District is its exquisite colonial architecture. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Plaza de la Independencia, the main square that serves as the epicenter of the district. The square is adorned with significant buildings, including the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Marvel at the intricate details of the facades, the imposing bell towers, and the richly decorated interiors, all testaments to the architectural mastery of the past.
Cultural Gems Await
Venture beyond the main square and discover a treasure trove of cultural gems scattered throughout the district. Begin your journey at the Church of the Society of Jesus, commonly referred to as La Compañía. This baroque masterpiece is adorned with dazzling gold leaf decorations, intricate woodwork, and awe-inspiring religious artwork. Its ornate beauty is bound to leave you spellbound.
Continue your exploration to the San Francisco Church, an iconic landmark that dates back to the 16th century. Step inside to witness a harmonious blend of indigenous and European influences, as well as a magnificent courtyard that exudes tranquility amidst the bustling city.
Embrace the Authenticity of Calle La Ronda
For a taste of traditional Ecuadorian culture, make your way to Calle La Ronda, a charming street lined with colorful colonial houses that have been transformed into artisan shops, galleries, and lively cafés. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and aromas of this vibrant neighborhood as you explore the local crafts, sample traditional delicacies, and perhaps even enjoy a captivating live music performance.
Museums: A Glimpse into the Past
Quito’s Historic District is home to an array of exceptional museums that offer profound insights into the city’s history, art, and culture. The Museo de la Ciudad, situated in a beautifully restored colonial building, showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, and interactive exhibits that chronicle the city’s evolution over the centuries.
Art enthusiasts should not miss the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, an avant-garde art museum housed in a former military hospital. Here, you can admire thought-provoking contemporary artworks from both local and international artists, providing a glimpse into the city’s vibrant art scene.
A Gastronomic Journey
No cultural exploration is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Quito’s Historic District offers an array of culinary delights. Visit traditional markets such as Mercado Central to savor authentic Ecuadorian dishes bursting with flavors and aromas. Don’t miss out on trying the renowned “locro de papa,” a delicious potato soup enriched with cheese, avocado, and herbs, or the delectable “ceviche,” a refreshing seafood dish infused with citrus juices and spices.
For a truly immersive gastronomic experience, consider joining a culinary tour that takes you through the vibrant streets of the Historic District, introducing you to hidden culinary gems and local delicacies. From freshly baked empanadas to sweet treats like “helado de paila,” a traditional Ecuadorian ice cream, your taste buds are in for a delightful adventure.
Captivating Cultural Events
Throughout the year, Quito’s Historic District comes alive with captivating cultural events that celebrate its rich heritage. If you happen to visit during the Holy Week, witness the vibrant processions and religious ceremonies that fill the streets with an atmosphere of reverence and devotion.
Another highlight is the Festival of Lights, an annual event where the district is adorned with mesmerizing light installations, creating a magical ambiance that illuminates the historical landmarks and transforms the city into a spectacle of colors and creativity.
Exploring Beyond the District
While the Historic District itself offers an abundance of cultural wonders, don’t limit your exploration to its borders. Quito is nestled amidst stunning natural landscapes, providing opportunities for outdoor adventures just a short distance away. Consider embarking on a day trip to the nearby Pichincha Volcano, where you can hike to its summit and revel in breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surrounding valleys.
Alternatively, venture to the Mitad del Mundo, a monument marking the equator line that divides the Earth’s northern and southern hemispheres. Here, you can straddle the equator and visit the Intiñan Museum, where fascinating experiments demonstrate the unique gravitational effects experienced at this global landmark.
