Cruise ships will once again return to Guernsey waters this April.

It will be the first time since 2019.

86 cruise ships will dock in Guernsey's waters over the summer period.

The announcement comes as Guernsey lifted all of its remaining Covid restrictions today (17 February), including removing all restrictions on the island's borders.

Cruise liners will be testing all passengers on arrival at the port before they depart.

Guernsey Ports and Visit Guernsey are asking cruise operators and shipping agents to ensure all passengers are also aware of the strong recommendation to do a lateral flow test before coming ashore.

The first cruise liner, the Hanseatic Spirit, is due to arrive on 15 April.

Deputy Neil Inder, President of the Committee for Economic Development, said: "After two missed cruise seasons due to the pandemic, the release of the cruise liner schedule for this year is welcome news indeed. Cruise passengers bring a significant boost to our economy every year. As an island we have missed them and it is great news that we’re on the cusp of welcoming these hugely valued tourists back onto our shores."

Hannah Beacom, Managing Director, Island Coachways Limited, said: "We are absolutely delighted to see the return of cruise liners to the island. The last couple of years have been extremely difficult for any of us reliant on tourism and we are looking forward to getting back to the "new normal".

We are pleased to see that the States of Guernsey have recommended a number of measures to ensure that our staff and the wider community remain safe. We cannot wait to show the cruise liner passengers all that Guernsey has to offer."

It's well worth visiting on a day when Seafront Sundays are taking place which always guarantee good atmosphere.

These offer the chance to stroll along the seafront with each having a different theme including Arts, Motorsport, Wildlife Care and EDABL – also known as Eat Drink and Be Local - a celebration of local food and drink on the Island.

Where to go on a Guernsey cruise

Hauteville house.

Guernsey was home to Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables, for 15 years and Hauteville House is the eccentric house in St Peter Port where he lived and one of our most popular visitor sites.

The three-storey house is full of secret doors and bold interiors, with furniture designed to challenge visitors – hidden cupboards, secret stairways. Much of the furniture in the house was made by Hugo or to his design and the house is truly a unique experience in itself!

Look out for your line's Guernsey cruise excursions as Hauteville House is usually available on a shore excursion and can be visited as part of a guided tour. It is located about 10 minutes from the Guernsey cruise terminal which is also ideal.

Little Chapel

Little Chapel is possibly the smallest chapel in the world and Guernsey’s most-loved visitor attraction. At just five metres in length, it can accommodate about 12 people.

It was built by Brother Déodat who started work in March 1914. His plan was to create a miniature version of the famous grotto and basilica at Lourdes in France. The whole chapel is encrusted in shells, coloured pebbles and china fragments and is free to visit.

The Petit Train

This delightful sightseeing trip aboard a motorised car train offers a picturesque tour around the capital of St Peter Port and is specially designed for those cruise passengers with limited time.

The Occupation Museum

The German Occupation Museum on the island provides a unique insight into life in Guernsey during World War Two when it was occupied by German forces. It was created and run by islander, Richard Heaume, as a schoolboy, who found bullets in the local field after the plough went by and began collecting them.

In 1966, he began displaying his collection in the cottage opposite his parents' house, and since then his display has expanded exponentially. The museum is now a fascinating and extensive collection of original Occupation items and documents including many extremely rare pieces.

Castle Cornet

Guarding St Peter Port Harbour, Castle Cornet is a majestic island castle dating back to 1206. It was originally built to protect the settlement and was formerly isolated on a rocky islet and accessible only by boat.

A breakwater and bridge were built in the 19th century and today visitors heading out on Guernsey cruise excursions can explore the battlements and enjoy views from the top of the castle across the Herm and Sark.

Candie Gardens

This beautifully maintained public garden boasts glorious views over St Peter Port harbour, as well as the sister islands Herm, Sark and Alderney.

Within the gardens, you’ll find the oldest known heated glasshouses in the British Isles, each filled with wonderful flowers and herbs as well as ponds, lawns, and an impressive array of flowers. It is also home to the new Victor Hugo Garden which opened in 2021.

What to do in Guernsey

Renoir art walk.

Renoir spent just over a month in Guernsey in 1883 and worked on 15 paintings during his stay, all depicting views of Moulin Huet, on the south coast of the island.

Art enthusiasts will delight in a Renoir Walk, following in the artist’s footsteps and seeing the part of the island he most loved from his perspective. Five specially crafted frames along the route will allow you to stand in the exact spots where Renoir worked on his paintings, so you can see Moulin Huet bay just as he did!

Outdoor adventure

Guernsey cruise holidays come with an array of diverse activities across the coast and inland.

Visitors should make use of tour provider Outdoor Guernsey for an abundance of activities such as archery, bush craft, cycling and climbing. Alternatively, at sea, you can get involved with coasteering, paddleboarding, kayaking and even puffin patrolling on the island’s coastal cliffs.

Candle making

At Guernsey Candles in Les Petites Capelles, you can watch the experts make each unique candle in their specialised workshop. You can follow the entire candle-making process all the way to the finished product. It’s a unique insight into a special art form!

What to eat and drink in Guernsey

Guernsey itself is known for producing incredible dairy products. The Guernsey cow breed, known as 'Guernseys' or the 'Golden Guernsey' is famous within the world dairy farming industry. They're known for their friendly, docile nature and for producing some of the best milk in the world - golden in colour, rich in flavour and with a high nutritional value.

Alongside luscious milk, cream, butter and ice cream, the Bailiwick’s award-winning artisan cheese is also made from Guernsey milk and is sold throughout the Island’s shops and local markets and is a must-try when on the islands.

Guernsey also boast some excellent Gin distilleries that stock the many bars and restaurants on the islands.

These include the family-run Wheadon’s Gin which takes inspiration and tastes from the local environment and the award-winning Blue Bottle Gin – noted for its tropical (almost coconut) scent of the local gorse flower.

What to pack for a Guernsey cruise

Number one thing to pack for your cruise to Guernsey is a pair of walking boots. With so much to see and do, the best thing to do is get out and explore.

Don’t forget sun cream either – even though the island is still part of the British Isles, it's closer to France and summer comes earlier than in the UK.

- READ MORE: Jane McDonald shares her top packing tips -

If heading to the neighbouring island of Herm, beware of the ‘Herm Burn’ – because of the lack of pollution (and shade) the sun can be particularly strong.

Other essentials will include extra layers for when the weather gets cooler in the evening, a rain jacket, swimwear, beach towels, sunglasses, evening wear, a change of shoes, toiletries and other essentials you'd take on a UK holiday.

A location some 112 kms from the south coast of Britain but only 40kms from the coast of France makes the Channel Island of Guernsey an ideal location for cruise calls. St Peter Port has been a popular port of call for many years and is capable of handling at least two large cruise liners at any one time with a high turnover of between 90 and 100 calls per year.

Guernsey’s cruise liner passengers disembark at a dedicated cruise pontoon 600 metres from the town centre. During a short tender transfer from the liner into St Peter Port harbour (5–10 minutes) our visitors admire the beautiful panoramic views, which include Guernsey’s sister Islands of Herm and Sark. On a clear day passengers may also see Alderney to the north and south to Jersey.

CruiseGuernsey has a disability awareness team to assist visiting cruise passengers. The team have undergone Hidden Disability Training, alongside enhancing the existing welcome teams to support anyone in need of a rest on a hot day or requiring additional assistance before boarding the return tenders

Set on a hillside watching over the gateway to Guernsey, is St Peter Port town. The delightful pocket-sized capital of Guernsey is a vibrant mix of hustle and bustle with a distinctly continental atmosphere. St Peter Port is unquestionably served by one of the most picturesque harbours in Europe. Whilst only 40 square kms in size, Guernsey offers stunning scenery, historic buildings, fascinating museums, 480kms of country lanes, and some of the best beaches in Europe. All of these different ingredients, combined with the friendliness of the people, come together to create the unique atmosphere that makes Guernsey the Island of choice.

Guernsey: all cruises to St Peter Port in 2022

St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey , is one of the most picturesque ports on the Northern European cruise routes and is an outstanding location for cruise ship calls.

April 15 will see the first ship touchdown with the arrival of Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Spirit. With quality port services, professional handling arrangements and a warm welcome, Guernsey has earned its enviable reputation and sees cruising as a great way to introduce the island to visitors. Cruise call numbers will return to pre-pandemic levels this year, with an even stronger return expected in 2023.

Guernsey

Guernsey’s cruise ship season will run through October with the last call scheduled for October 25 by Norwegian Star. Ships that will transit there include MSC Cruises ‘ MSC Virtuosa , Cunard ‘s Queen Victoria and Ambassador Cruise Line ‘s new Ambience .

With so much to explore and experience across the islands, it’s no wonder the islands of Guernsey remain one of the most popular ports of call for many cruises around Great Britain, Northern European itineraries and even repositioning trips from the Mediterranean. Some smaller cruise ships also visit Alderney, Herm and Sark during the season.

The number of people who will be able to board has been restored to that of pre-pandemic times, and capacity will increase further in 2023. Of course, measures have been introduced to protect health and safety on board; for example, passengers will be strongly advised to take a quick test before going ashore.

A VisitGuernsey spokesperson commented, “We look forward to welcoming our first cruise ship passengers in over two years to St Peter Port this summer. Cruising is an important part of our tourism economy and we continue to invest in our service offerings to cruises, including the reception process, disembarkation and an extensive and diverse shore excursion program. We are committed to ensuring that passengers not only create lifelong memories while visiting the islands, but also want to return for a longer stay.”

Visiting Guernsey from a cruise ship: What to do in Guernsey during a quick trip

Visiting Guernsey was one of the highlights during my recent cruise aboard the Sky Princess. I was so excited to visit this beautiful little island and get a taste of island life.

Guernsey was the first stop on my Sky Princess cruise . We departed from Southampton the previous afternoon and woke up on the sunny shores of Guernsey.

You can read more about my departure here: Cruising from the UK and boarding the Sky Princess in Southampton

Guernsey has a small port so we needed to take smaller tender boats from the ship to Albert Pier where we were welcomed with dazzling sunshine and a bustling Sunday market.

The Travel Hack on the Sky Princess

I instantly fell in love with Guernsey and I quickly knew that visiting Guernsey for a longer trip in the future was on my bucket list.

The small island was part of the Duchy of Normandy and is just 48km from France so it has this beautiful combination of French elegance combined with British charm.

Guernsey felt almost like being abroad but with the familiar comfort of home.

It has British seaside vibes, only a little prettier, a little warmer, bluer, clearer and just a little more exciting for this British travel blogger who loves to go abroad!

I quickly realised I could happily spend a long weekend on Guernsey but we had just 6-7 hours to visit Guernsey from a cruise ship, so every second counted!

The Travel Hack in Guernsey

How to get around Guernsey when visiting from a cruise ship

You have a couple of options when visiting Guernsey from a cruise ship:

  • Book an organised excursion via the cruise
  • Use the local bus service – which would be a great option but we visited on a Sunday when buses were limited. I recommend using Google Maps to navigate the local buses.
  • Take a local tour
  • Hire a bike (just be aware that the island is hilly and some roads are narrow)
  • Take a taxi
  • Take a tuk tuk! (more on that below)

The main concern when visiting Guernsey from a cruise ship is that you have to be back to the ship on time! If you’re late, the ship will go without you! So just bear that in mind and don’t go too far off the beaten path.

I was visiting with my friend, Jen, and we decided to hire a tuk tuk to see the nearby highlights.

Tuk tuks from Tuk Tuk Guernsey were waiting on Albert Pier when we got off the shuttle boat and we hopped straight in with our guide, Tim. The standard tour travels around St Peter Port but we also wanted to see The Little HCapel, so we asked to extend our tour to visit the chapel too.

This made the tour 1 hour and 45 minutes and cost £90 for both of us.

We were able to pay via card and the tuk tuk had a moveable roof and blankets in the back in case it got cold. Luckily, it was a beautiful day and we loved breezing around the streets of Guernsey with the roof down.

What to do in Guernsey

There are so many things to do in Guernsey. I’m going to begin by sharing what I did and add a couple of extra options at the end.

Guernsey’s Victorian Baths

Guernsey Victorian Baths

We began by visiting La Valette, Gurney’s Victorican bathing pools. These historic swimming pools have been in use since 1865. They are submerged in the sea and they’re flushed out with fresh water twice a day at high tide.

The pools were recently renovated and a large cafe and changing rooms were added.

During our recent hot summer (summer 2022) the water in the pools even reached 20 degrees C, which might not seem a lot if you’re visiting from abroad but for us Brits that’s positively tropical!

Mignot Plateau

cruise liners in guernsey

Our second stop was Mignot Plateau where we enjoyed incredible views across St Peter Port and the harbour. This was a lovely place to begin and get our bearings and we could even see across to the nearby islands of Sark, Jersey and we could just about see France!

Fermain Bay

Fermain Bay

We whizzed past Victor Hugo’s house (who famously wrote Les Miserables during his 15 year stay on the island) before visiting Fermain Bay, which was not only a beautiful pebble beach but a stunning drive down a steep, tree-lined lane. You actually need a permit to drive down this steep hill so this was where the tuk tuk was a huge advantage!

This felt like a real hidden gem and a world away from St Peter Port.

The Travel Hack at Fermain Bay

The Little Chapel

Guernsey Little Chapel

The Little Chapel was our next stop and was my personal highlight when visiting Guernsey.  I’d come across this tiny shrine when I read the novel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The chapel didn’t make it into the film adaptation of the book, which seems a shame because it’s such a dainty yet incredible masterpiece.

The Little Chapel is somewhere between a tiny church and a grotto. From a distance you could almost believe that it’s full size but it’s actually tiny!

Building of the chapel began in 1914 by Brother Déodat but this is actually the third version of the chapel. Brother Déodat built the first but it was criticised by his brother so he quickly knocked it down and started again. His second version of the chapel stood for a few years but Brother Déodat was mortified when the Bishop of Portsmouth came to visit and couldn’t fit through the door! Brother Déodat quickly knocked it down and began a new chapel with a bigger door, which is the finished chapel we see today.

It’s beautifully decorated using pretty pebbles and bits of broken china. During construction, Brother Déodat actually called for donations of broken china and he was inundated with boxes of China from all over the world.

The Little Chapel was a little out of the way but it was well worth making the extra effort to visit it.

Guernsey Little Chapel

Church Square

cruise liners in guernsey

Next up we drove through the beautiful Church Square which looked so pretty decorated with bunting and flags.

Our tuk tuk driver, Tim, pointed out a record breaking pub and church in the British Isles. Look out for this pub and church whose close proximity makes this the closest pub to a church in all of Britain! Keep your eyes peeled for the gargoyle at the top who ensures the two buildings are just inches apart.

Lunch at Octopus

cruise liners in guernsey

We left our tuk tuk and strolled over to Octopus, a seaside restaurant just a short walk along the coast.

The setting for this restaurant is perfection and we enjoyed fish and chips with crisp glasses of rose.

Sunday market

cruise liners in guernsey

While we were visiting Guernsey we were lucky enough that a large and bustling market was set up. One section was filled with local crafts while the second section was reserved for food, drink and local musicians. It was a brilliant opportunity to try some local foods and soak up the atmosphere.

We then had a walk along the coast before returning back to the ship but there are plenty of other things you can do when visiting Guernsey from a cruise ship.

What to do when visiting Guernsey from a cruise ship

That’s what I got up to when visiting Guernsey but if you have a little more time then here are some other great things to do in Guernsey.

cruise liners in guernsey

Visit Guernsey’s beaches

There are lots of beautiful beaches on Guernsey. I hear Cobo Bay is one of the best!

cruise liners in guernsey

Visit the neighbouring islands

It’s quick and easy to hop on a ferry to one of Guernsey’s neighbouring islands. Many people hop on over to Sark which is a 50 minute ferry ride away and is known for its white, sandy beaches. Sark is often considered to be the nicest of the Channel Islands and looks beautiful.

Visit (and climb) Victoria Tower

While we saw Victoria Tower from our tuk tuk tour, we didn’t have time to climb to the top.

This is where you’ll get the best views in the city but it’s also an unusual one because you have to collect the keys from the museum in Candie Gardens!

There are 99 steps to the top and you’ll enjoy incredible views over Guernsey.

Wander around Candie Gardens

The Victorian Candie Gardens are spectacular and they’re just a short walk from St Peter Port. The gardens were established in 1894 and they’re still free to enter today.

Visit the German Underground Hospital

The German Underground Hospital was the largest WW2 structure on the island. There are 75,000 square feet of tunnels and it’s a eerie and heartbreaking place to visit but a vital reminder of the German occupation on the island.

Guernsey Press

A good year for the cruise liners – but why anchor so far away?

THE recent long period of hot weather has provided cruise ship arrivals with the best possible conditions, all at no cost to the island, as it is free advertising when their passengers come ashore and explore what we have to offer.

One thing does puzzle me, however. Perhaps incorrectly I have always been under the impression that all maritime visitors of a certain size need to use the services of our trained local pilots. The reason I ask is because about 10 days ago a large liner visiting the island anchored so far out that it almost seemed closer to Herm than Guernsey. A week later another large liner anchored surprisingly close to the harbour mouth. This makes me wonder whether the captains of the liners are exempt from using local pilots because I cannot see the advantage of anchoring far out as this gives their little tenders a much longer voyage to the harbour and a rougher trip for their passengers if the sea is not billiard-table flat. If local pilots are being used, the different anchoring points are a bit of a puzzle, unless some liners need more depth of water than others.

I assume that there is someone at the top of the arrivals gangway with a ‘clicker’ counting the number of arrivals. Although we are told the names and sizes of the liners including the number of passengers the public has no idea how many passengers come ashore and I think it would interest a lot of people if the numbers were published the next day in the Noticeboard page of the Press.

TONY MCDADE

Rocque Es Roussee

Editor’s footnote: Harbour master Captain David Barker from Guernsey Harbours replies:

All visiting cruise ships are required to take a harbour pilot in order to anchor in the Little Russel channel. The actual anchorage position is agreed between the pilot and the vessel’s master, after considering a number of factors including weather, tide, size and draft of the vessel, as well as the safety restrictions of the vessel’s parent company.

The second largest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey's sea cliffs and windswept grasslands are home to a history as dramatic as its landscape, from being a pirate haven during the Middle Ages to becoming occupied by German troops during WWII. Today, the island's capital St. Peters Port is considered one of Europe's most scenic port cities with its cobblestone streets, lush gardens, museums and boutique shopping. From the port, you can tour 800-year-old Castle Cornet, hike along cliffs offering amazing vistas or visit the museum at Hauteville House - home of famed French writer Victor Hugo.
