The most famous temple and the main attraction of Vrindavan is the Shri Bankey Bihari Temple. The temple was built for Lord Krishna and ‘Banke’ refers to bent, and ‘Bihari’ means the enjoyer. The principal deity stands in a ‘Tribhanga’ posture, tilted at three angles. The temple enjoys huge footfalls always of the year but especially around the celebrations of Shri Krishna Janmashtami (birth of the lord) in August every year. The temple is open from 7.45 am to 8.30 pm in winter and till 9.30 pm in summer months.

ii. Madan Mohan Temple

The Madan Mohan temple is a 5000-year-old temple built in honor of the Madan Mohan deity at the root of an ancient banyan tree. The principal deity, Lord Madan Mohan is a name for the Hindu god Krishna. He is at the central altar with his main consort Radha on one side and Lalita Gopi on the other side. The temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm in winter and till 9.30 pm in summer months.

iii. Radha Madan Mohan Temple

The Shri Radha Mohan temple is a popular tourist attraction in Vrindavan. It’s Nagra’s style of architecture that is very impressive. The temple overlooks the holy Yamuna River and stands at 50 feet close to the Kaliya Ghat . The temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm in winter and till 9.30 pm in summer months.

Famous Gokul & Barsana Tourist Places:

Gokul is located at a distance of 16 km from Mathura. As per the famous belief, Lord Krishna spent his childhood at this place. This makes it an important pilgrimage place. Visiting Gokul during the Janmashtami festival is one of the best things to do for tourists because the city comes to life at that time. There are various places to visit in Gokul like Chourasi Khambha (84 pillars) also known as Nand Maharaja’s house, the mud temple, Brahmand Ghat, etc.

Do you know that Mathura is where Lord Krishna, the 8th avatar of Vishnu, was born? He is the God of protection, compassion, tenderness, and love!

Places to visit in Gokul Govardhan

We’re listing places to visit in Gokul Govardhan as per what we’ve personally seen and from the Internet, starting from Govardhan, then Gokul. Consider the following map to understand the location of Gokul, Govardhan, and Mathura:

Reaching Govardhan

You can reach Govardhan by covering a distance of 22 km from Mathura or 25 km from Vrindavan . Govardhan Hill was the first stop on our list.

Krishna once lifted the mystical Govardhan hill on his little finger to protect villagers from Lord Indra’s wrath, the deity of thunder and storm.

I had seen this incident many times in tableaux and shows, but witnessing it, in reality, would be an enjoyable and pleasing experience.

1. Daan Ghati Temple

While starting to do the Pad Yatra around the hill, you’ll come across a temple named Daan Ghati temple. It will mesmerize you at first glance, showing the life-size representation of the scene where Muralidhar has lifted a mountain on his Kani (pinky) finger, protecting villagers and animals.

As you might guess, Lord Shri Krishna is in Giriraj or Girdhari form at this place. Giri in Hindi means Hill or Mountain, Dhari means the bearer!

There are many more small temples in the temple complex, where people worship the stone form of the Lord.

2. Circumambulating Govardhan Hill/Parvat

Next up in the list of places to visit in Gokul Govardhan is Govardhan Hill.

The 21 km-long circumambulation of Govardhan Parvat starts from the right side of the Daan Ghati temple. We didn’t intend to but still went a few hundred meters in the circumambulation area.

I sensed a different feeling inside the devotees here; even the young children appeared full of zeal to do the circumambulation. Milk, Dandavat, and Sohni Seva circumambulation are some of the circumambulations that devotees perform here.

To facilitate the parikrama or circumambulation, you will find many carts of fruits, shoes, breakfast water, and shops all along the way.

The unique thing that appeared to me was that shops sold loose coins and Parle-G biscuits in bundles for devotees. You might also see some street vendors selling green grass, perhaps to serve the cows you meet during the circumambulation.

The Govardhan Hill is 21 feet high and has a significant width. You will see devotees worshiping stones from place to place here. Every single stone here is the landscape of Radha-Krishna.

Legends of Govardhan Hill

This legend happened in Dwapara Yuga, which tells that Shri Krishna didn’t want the people of Braj to worship Lord Indra for the rain. He believed that Indra must rain as it’s His duty. In response, Indra rained heavily for seven consecutive days, and the entire Braj submerged in water.

Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger to protect the people from this wrath, and all villagers and animals came under to save their lives. In the end, Krishna broke Indra’s pride, and later Indra realized his mistake and did everything in the right state and prayed to Krishna.

Visiting The Old Lanes of Gokul

Up until now, we’ve seen Govardhan. Next up in the list of places to visit in Gokul Govardhan is Gokul village and around.

To reach, we took a local tuk-tuk from Mathura and arrived at Gokul after a 20-30 minutes ride.

BEWARE! As soon as you reach Gokul, many guides will approach you, ready to give you a tour of Gokul village and around for as low as 50 rupees. But they’ll be prepared to upsell you and use your insecurities and faith to juice out 100 times of what you paid to the guide.

Our advice? Have a thick skin belief in yourself and the God you’re visiting. If possible, do your research and play it safe – be your guide.

3. Chaurasi Khamba Temple (Nanda Bhavan)

You would first like to see the place in Gokul where Bal Krishna’s squeals once resonated – Nanda Bhavan, also known as Chaurasi Khamba (84 pillared building). Sri Krishna and his Dauji (Balaram Ji) got their name and spent their childhood in this building’s courtyard.

Climbing some stairs, you reach the main entrance, which opens towards a verandah. You can see Krishna’s childhood pastimes paintings on the walls. Along with the stone carvings, the artwork will fascinate you.

You will also find a vast and religiously significant tree in the courtyard. People tie red threads of wishes on it, believing that Lord Krishna hears all the wishes.

4. The Holy Sand of Raman Reti

Raman Reti, located at a distance of 2-3 km from Gokul, is essentially the sand where Krishna played in his childhood. You’ll see devotees playing, running, and lying in this sand.

In the Dwapar Yuga, when Shri Krishna was in a child form, Yashoda Mata sent him to the forest to graze the cows. That forest is today the place of Raman Reti. Lord Shri Krishna used to play here with elder brother Balaram Ji and other Gwalas . The entire credit for its present form goes to Saint Gyanadas Ji, who understood the importance of this place in the 18th century and shaped it to help devotees offer prayers.

There is a park next to it. You will see deer, spurts, and ducks roaming around. You will see many huts of the same size, homes to sages and saints. In all honesty, Raman Reti is one of the best places to visit in Gokul Govardhan.

5. Brahmand Ghat’s Legend

Situated near Raman Reti and on the banks of Yamuna, there is an interesting legend associated with Brahmand Ghat.

Once, while playing, the child Krishna ate mud. When this thing reached Yashoda Mata, she came running to her son and asked him to open his mouth to let the soil come out.

But what she saw inside his mouth surprised her – a whole picture of the universe, aka Brahmand in Hindi. This incident convinced Yashoda Maa that her child is not an ordinary kid. And the place where this incident happened is therefore named Brahmand Ghat.

At present, local administration maintains this place and keeps it up from a tourism perspective. Nearby the Ghat, there’s a Brahmanda Bihari temple dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna.

For a peaceful experience and to spend some time in solitude by the banks of Yamuna, come to Brahmand Ghat, one of the best places to visit in Gokul Govardhan.

6. shri thakur rani ghat.

According to mythology, Yamuna Mata herself appeared to Shri Vallabhacharya Ji after listening to Yamunashtakam (a song dedicated to the Yamuna Ji) at this place.

7. Gokulnathji Temple

Situated at a height behind this temple is a pond called Mansi Ganga. According to the stories, when Yashoda Mata expressed her desire to bathe in the Ganges, Prabhu said that he could bring the Ganges here himself. And this is how Mansi Ganga came here.

Important Points and Suggestions

• You can quickly get a bus, tuk-tuk, or cab for Govardhan from Vrindavan and Mathura.
• If you want to do Govardhan Parikrama, then go early in the morning. Since the circumambulation is 21 km, go with complete preparation.
• It’s easy to visit Gokul from Mathura with your private vehicle.
• It isn’t easy to get a tuk-tuk in Gokul for Ramna Reti and Brahmanda Ghat. Even if you get it, they’ll charge a lot of money.
• The best time to visit is all year round, but Holi is the preferred time if you are looking for a memorable trip. If you are planning to go in summer, keep a light cloth and water bottle with you.
• Sit for some time in peace on Raman Reti and Brahmanda Ghat and reflect on those things in your mind. Lose yourself in devotion to God.
• Commute between all the places to visit in Gokul Govardhan isn’t easily available.

Barsana is believed to be the home of the Hindu goddess Radha, the consort of Krishna. It is in the Braj region. The main attraction of the town is Radha Rani Temple.

The town where Krishna spent his childhood , Gokul, is an important pilgrimage destination. From temples dedicated to Lord Krishna to the sites where Lord Krishna lived and played is the must-see in Gokul. Performing a pilgrimage is the top thing to do in Gokul.

Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill during his childhood on one finger to save his village of Mathura from fierce rains and thunderstorms. This hill is considered holy and is visited by worshipers on Guru Purnima, Govardhan Puja, in devotion by walking 23 km barefoot around the mountain. After Lord Krishna had saved his village, he told everyone to worship the hill, which is why Govardhan Puja is a day after Diwali. It is a serene place and definitely, a must-visit!

Agra is  best known for the Taj Mahal (17th century), designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 . A complex mausoleum, the Taj Mahal is often considered to be the world’s best example of Mughal architecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahān built it for his favourite wife, Mumtāz Maḥal, in the mid-17th century.

Here is the itinerary to Plan Mathura – Vrindavan – Agra via Nandgaon, Barsana, Govardhan, Gokul – Budget Trip

Delhi – Mathura (160 KM and takes around 3 hours to reach via Road Trip)

Being reasonably close to the capital (Delhi), your journey to Mathura begins from here. It takes around 3 hours to reach (by Road) but can reduce to one hour if you opt to travel via train. 

I am living in Chandigarh and opt to go to Mathura via Train.

Chandigarh to Mathura via Train costs you approx 750 INR for the 3rd AC and 300 INR for the Sleeper Coach.

Traveling from New Delhi costs you approximately 600 INR for the 3rd AC and 200 INR for the Sleeper Coach. 

Check-in at the pre-booked Hotel, and after freshening up and having lunch, start exploring the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Stay in a Hotel (near Janambhumi) costs you approx 1200 INR per night.

• Visit JanamBhumi  (visiting hours 5 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 9:30 PM.); it is where Lord Krishna was born.
• Spend some time in Janambhumi and proceed towards  Dwarkadheesh Temple, Mathura  (visiting hours 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM), which holds an exciting architecture in the area.
• Move towards  Vishram Ghat  (5 AM to 8 PM) ,  Lord Krishna’s rest place after triumphing over the tyrant Kansa.
• Vishram ghat is famous for its boat rides  (which cost approx 50 INR per person)  since it is at the center of the other ghats. You can experience the joy of capturing the scenic views along the river Yamuna. During the ride, you can view the entire stretch of the river Yamuna. Different types of boats at different prices are available at the Ghat.
• The most beautiful aspect of all is the evening prayers and Arti that shouldn’t be missed. An Arti is held every evening. Furthermore, thousands of oil lamps float down the river, which is a beautiful sight. Arti’s timings in summer are 7 AM to 7.15 AM, and in winter, it’s 6.45 AM to 7 AM. The evening aarti timings are 7 PM, both in summer and winter.
• You can also experience watching Kans Quila during your Boat Ride.

You can visit other temples too, keeping in mind the time limit. After a long day of full exploration, you can go to the Hotel after Dinner to retire.

• Wake up early and move towards Nandgaon; it’s approx 55 KM from Mathura and takes 1 hour 30 minutes to reach. 
• Visit Nand Mahal and Paawan Sarovar.
• Move towards Barsana (Nandgaon to Barsana is 10 KM far and takes approx 20 minutes)
• Visit Radha Rani Mandir
• Move towards Govardhan (21 KM distance from Barsana and takes approximately 35 minutes to reach) and enjoy your Brunch here.
• Now it’s time for Govardhan Parikrma (14 KM); you can also opt via Rikshaw (100 INR per person) 
• Visit Giriraj Mandir, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund, and move towards Mathura (22 KM in the distance and takes approx 50 minutes).
• Enjoy your Dinner here, and now it’s time to sleep.
• Wake up early and move towards Vrindavan (15 KM and takes approx 25 minutes to reach)
• Visit Pagal baba mandir, Radha Vallabh Temple, Banke Bihari Mandir, ISKCON Temple, Kaanch Mandir, Vaishno Devi Mandir, Nandi Van, Keshi Ghat, Madan Mohan Mandir, Radha Raman Temple, Rangnath Mandir, Birla (Gita) Temple and Prem Mandir (the Evening is ideal for exploring  Prem Mandir, Vrindavan .), visiting hours of all these temples are about 5 AM to 11:30 AM and 4 PM to 8 PM. 
• Dinner in Mathura
• It’s time to check out from Hotel and move towards Gokul (10 KM in Distance and takes approx 30 minutes)
• Visit Gokul Dhaam and Raman Reti Aashram
• Enjoy your Brunch in Gokul and Move Towards Agra (55 KM Distance and takes approx 1 hour 10 minutes)
• Check-in at pre-booked Hotel and explore the local market of Agra in the Evening.
• Enjoy your Breakfast
• Check out From the Hotel and Visit Tajmahal (8 AM). To visit the main mausoleum of the Tajmahal, one has to buy an additional ticket of 200 INR along with the regular ticket. A regular ticket costs 50 INR for Indians and 1100 INR for Foreigners.  Keep in mind that Tajmahal is closed every Friday. Use Cloakroom to keep your luggage. There are two cloakrooms at each East and West gate of the Taj Mahal  with 107 storage blocks, including lockers.  Small handbags are allowed at the Taj Mahal complex, but big bags are prohibited at the Taj Mahal . You may carry only a mobile phone, camera, and small money bag, but smoking items, eatable items, and electronic items like a camera tripod, Pendrive, knife, lighter, matchbox, etc., are not allowed.
• Visit Redfort. Agra Fort timings are from sunrise to sunset on all days of the week. The opening hours are between  6 AM to 6 PM . Entry  tickets  are 50 INR ( Weekdays except for Friday)  and 40 INR  (Friday)  for Indians, and foreigners have to pay 650 INR ( Weekdays except for Friday)  and 600 INR  (Friday)  for the entry.
• Visit Mehtab Bagh. Entry  tickets  are 25 INR for Indians, and foreigners have to pay 300 INR for the entry.
• Visit Agra Railway Station to head back to Delhi/ Chandigarh or from wherever you are from or where ever you want to go. The trip has ended, but the fond memory of the place remains.

Places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan for a perfect weekend

Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born and raised, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh . At its centre lie the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.

Getting there

A 60km drive from Agra airport, Mathura lies four hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. Those arriving by train can disembark at Mathura Junction.

The best season to visit is in early winter, when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. This year, Janmashtami falls on 6 and 7 September. During the festivities, the streets are filled with dance and processions, and temples across Braj are lit up and decorated. You can also time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Holi, when the streets of Mathura come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.

Where to stay in Mathura and Vrindavan

While Mathura offers a range of hotels such as The Lalita Grand ( doubles from Rs4,950* ), many chose to use Vrindavan as their base. Nidhivan Sarovar Portico, Vrindavan , ( Doubles from Rs6,200* ) features an in-house spa and has a team of guides for day tours of the town. The Mayapur Vrindavan Trust (MVT) Guesthouse and Restaurant ( Doubles from Rs4,600*) is just 100m from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Temple. It also has a steady WiFi connection for workations. For real quiet, head to the sandstone gazebo that sits in the middle of an elevated grass lawn. Thanks to a no-phone policy, a dense silence pervades this space, so you can retreat from the bustle of the day for a meditative evening.

Where to eat in Mathura and Vrindavan

MVT Restaurant has an expansive multicuisine menu . Delhi-based yoga instructor Niyati Karir, a frequent visitor, recommends the restaurant’s wood-fired pizza followed by blueberry cheesecake or chocolate cake with a side of cream. Govinda’s Restaurant is another popular choice. The restaurant is housed at ISKCON temples around the world, including the one in Vrindavan, and serves a buffet as well as an à la carte menu. There’s also Dasaprakash for South Indian fare and 11 FLOWERS Rooftop Café for a breezy evening meal.

It consists of the Keshavdeva temple, Garbha Griha shrine and Bhagavata Bhavan along with a steep tank called the Potra Kund. Observe the marble pavilions and spacious verandahs, and keep an eye out for the prison cell, built under the structure, where Krishna was born to parents Devaki and Vasudeva. When the temple complex came up, the inner sanctum was constructed right above the famed prison.

Trek up Govardhan Hill near Mathura

A six-hour circuitous trek in the town of Govardhan takes you to the top of this eponymous 80ft-tall sandstone hill. On your way, take a dip in the famed Radha Kund and Shyam Kund by temples steeped in Krishna lore. Look out for the stone cenotaphs while crossing the Kusum Sarovar lake, and for Giriraj Temple—the most popular temple here. Karir shares that the trek is just as much about the fellow travellers. “You’ll come across devotees who take the circumambulation two to three times a day, while saints travel with a cart to eat and sleep throughout the day and night.” If you are lost, the saints make for excellent guides, Karir says, as they are well educated in multiple languages as well as the scriptures of the Vedas and the Upanishads. Alternatively : Swap out the trek for the nearby town of Barsana, said to be the home of Krishna’s beloved, Radha. Just an hour from Mathura, the town is accessible via bus. Barsana is surrounded by four sacred peaks and topped by the Ladliji Temple.

Lift your head up in Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura

Ornate murals adorn this shrine in Mathura where Lord Krishna, in his manifestation as Dwarkadhish, sits in the form of a black marble idol. Visit this temple to decipher stories of his life through the stunning ceiling paintings. Entry to the premises is allowed from two gates, which lead to the two-storey structure fronted by an open courtyard flooded with pilgrims. Every year on Janmashtami, the temple organises the popular Krishna Janmotsav. Rituals and ceremonies carry on throughout the day, beginning with the Mangal Aarti at 7am when devotees can get the first glimpse of the lord. Spend the day witnessing rajbhog—the main food offering, shringar—the dressing up of lord Krishna, and utthapan—waking up the lord with perfume and fruits, among other things.

Dive into history at Kans Qila, Mathura

Said to be the home of the demon king Kansa, the maternal uncle of Krishna, the fort Kans Qila lies in majestic ruins today. The walls reveal intricacies of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, narrating stories of the various rulers who took over its care over centuries. The monument dates back to the time of the Mahabharata, but was restored in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh of Amber. Visit the palatial fort for a dose of history and portraits against a ’grammable backdrop.

Perambulate across Vrindavan

There's no better way to get in touch with the heartbeat of this town. The Vrindavan Parikrama is a 13km long route snaking through the town that pilgrims cover on foot . Take off on the trail early in the morning, and you’ll be joined by the devout and the curious, welcomed by locals and blessed by priests on the way as you walk past temples and houses, bylanes and markets and the mighty Ganga. The route can be completed in about three hours, and is commonly covered barefoot.

Trail the seven Goswami temples, Vrindavan

Over the course of many years, the six main goswamis or disciples of Lord Krishna established seven sacred shrines across Vrindavan. “Each consecrated deities of the lord and gave them the names they lovingly addressed him with,” says Karir. Visit the thus- named Radha Damodar Temple, Radha Gokulananda Temple, Radha Gopinath Temple, Radha Shyamsundar Temple, Radha Raman Temple, Radha Govindadeva Temple and Radha Madanmohan Temple for rich oral narratives and Vrindavan’s earliest temple architecture. No two temples seem the same. The smoke and honking of the road give way to the smell of chandan and the vibrations of kirtan in some of these shrines, while at others you can only hear the shuffling of the faithful kneeling before the lord.With a rickshaw steering you through the busy streets, the trail takes up to three hours with enough time to stop for a cup of tea by the River Yamuna.

Marvel at the grandeur of Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, Vrindavan

On the way back, visit the grand ISKCON Temple built in 1975 by Srila Prabhupada, founder of the ISKCON movement. The marble archway resounds with chants of Krishna, and ushers you in the main temple built around a tamal tree. Under its cool green shade, women thread necklaces of dry fruit to offer the deity. Attractions abound the premises, with book stalls, a museum , eateries and a guesthouse where you can learn, eat and stay. If you’re on time, you can catch the Raj Bhog aarti at 12pm right before the temple closes for the afternoon. Be careful to find a spot beforehand, for as the bells begin ringing, devotees are spread across the courtyard—some lost in a dance of devotion, some singing joyfully. With a mic in hand, one by one they take over to devote their song to the lord as the afternoon meal is served to the idols before being shared with the devotees as prasadam.

Hold your breath at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

A trip to Brajbhoomi is incomplete without a visit to one of its most visited temples. Steer through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the lord’s idol at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. It is believed that the sight of the idol of Shri Krishna in his childhood form is a harbinger of good luck, which is why even the streets of Keshi Ghat, right in front of the temple , remain flooded with pilgrims even before the temple opens. The curtain lifts only for a few moments, but reveals a breathtaking image adorned in hefty ornamentation and divine energy. After the visit, head to the basil forest Nidhivan, where the extant idol of Bankey Bihari was originally consecrated.

Just a few minutes beyond Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, a street segues off the main road into a labyrinth of dingy shops and sandstone houses. On every corner sit mendicants draped in orange, their tumbis delivering enticing tunes full of love. It is said that the grounds of this basil forest should be entered with the right foot to herald good luck. A criss-crossed cane tunnel takes you through a forest of trees. Watch out for monkeys and hold on to your spectacles while you cross the Rang Mahal temple, where Radha is believed to visit every night. Apocryphal stories relate that makeup and ornaments are left here behind locked doors every night, only to be found used the next morning. The temple shuts at 5pm while the forest is closed off after dark, but as the legend goes, that’s when Krishna and Radha visit and the trees dance in coquetry.

Gorge on street food by Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan

As dusk begins to settle over the glistening river, bonfires are lit across the shore. Some light up the dingy food shacks teeming with locals, some cook the street food–all exuding an orange glow against the night sky. Keshi Ghat and the adjacent Loi Bazaar along the Yamuna is where the pious head for morning ablutions and the foodies head for culinary explorations. Gorge on samosas and rabri, kulhad chai and aloo chaat here, and make sure to stop by Shri Brijwasi for peda, the local favourite. Every day at 6am and 4.30pm a special hour-long aarti takes place on the waters, and hundreds of diyas are left floating. You can catch a boat to the other side of the river for an unobstructed view. Priests and disciples sit in boats, criss-crossing saris as a way of draping the goddess Yamuna, while pilgrims in other boats make offerings of milk, flowers and incense.

Watch the light show at Prem Mandir, Vrindavan

This 54-acre site developed by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat has enough to keep you occupied, with educational centres and pillarless satsang halls. The temple is a stunning example of Nagara architecture carved out of Italian marble. Post sunset, the structure’s imposing facade is illuminated by a dance of colourful lights, and a musical fountain show commences at 7.30pm.

This Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan itinerary would be a great idea for weekend travelers or the ones who want to explore these places on a 2 day schedule. So, let’s get started.

Getting From Delhi To Agra

Day 1 : taj mahal, agra fort and fatehpur sikri, day 2 : mathura and vrindavan.

If you are coming to India from overseas, it is most probable that you will be landing at the Delhi Airport. If this is not the case you may still consider the train as the fastest mode of transportation from your city to Agra . Below are the different ways of traveling from Delhi to Agra, you can follow any of these as per your convenience :

By Train : You can reach the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) using the rapid metro service from Delhi Airport . The easiest way to book a train from Delhi To Agra is through Clear Trip website . Just fill in the easy form including the city you are coming from, the destination, day you would be traveling, preferred seat and the number of passengers. It would then show you all the available train routes, timings and their respective fares. You may book the train journey that suits you the best.

By Bus : You can book a bus trip from Delhi to Agra using the Make My Trip website. It also includes an easy search form that would show you details on all the available bus routes. Look out for the Volvo buses as they are the most comfortable ones.

By Car : You can hire a car here or ask the hotel management you are staying at to arrange a car for you. This is an expensive mode of transportation, but it’s the most convenient one.

2 Day Itinerary For Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour

Note :  During your visit you will be allowed to carry your camera & mobile phone with you. Edibles, torch & sharp objects are not allowed inside.

Opening Hours : Taj Mahal opens 6 days a week except on Fridays. The opening hours are as below;

• Day Time : 6 AM to 6 :30 PM
• Night Time : 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM

The Agra Fort is another must visit attraction in Agra. It’s an incredible example of Mughal architecture when the forts were built of red sandstone and marble. This fort was built in the year 1573. Its huge complex consist of many palaces, gardens, lawns, courtyards, corridors, mosques, audience halls and chambers. Note : The next stop would be Fatehpur Sikri which is located at a distance of 40 kms from Agra. Make sure you take a halt at any nearby restaurant in Agra for lunch before heading to Fatehpur Sikri. There are very limited food options in Fatehpur Sikri.

Fatehpur Sikri

Post lunch, visit the Fatehpur Sikri which is a palace city and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Built of red sandstone this palace city comprises of many popular structures such as the tomb of sufi saint Salim Chishti, Jama Masjid, Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of public audience), Birbal’s home, Hiran Minar (Elephant tower) and Paanch Mahal(five-storied pyramidal palace).

The most noteworthy thing about Fatehpur Sikri is its distinctive layout and the majestic entrance gate known as the Bulandh Darwaza .

Tour Duration : 2 Hours (Including the 45 minutes journey from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri)

Ticket Prices : For foreign nationals the ticket for Fatehpur Sikri is priced at 260 rupees (4 USD) while for Indian nationals the ticket is priced at 20 rupees.

Opening Hours : Fatehpur Sikri remains open from 6 AM to 6:30 PM everyday except on Fridays.

By the end of this tour, head back to Agra and have a good dinner at your hotel or at any of these top recommended restaurants .

You would not be allowed to take cameras, bags or cellphones inside the complex. Make sure you keep them in the safe lockers outside the temple’s complex.

Tour Duration :  1 hour

Opening Hours : The temple remains open from 5 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 8 PM everyday.

Take a halt for lunch at Brijwasi restaurant which is located outside this temple’s complex.

Bankey Bihari Ji Temple

Bankey Bihari Ji Temple is the most renowned and holiest temple in Vrindavan . This temple is visited by millions of devotees every year with the hopes of wish fulfillment and to get a glimpse of the mesmerizing idol of Lord Krishna.

You will have to go through narrow lanes to reach this temple. Beware of notorious monkeys too! They are known for snatching stuff from people, especially spectacles/sunglasses.

Tour Duration : 45 minutes

Timings : The temple remains open from 9 AM to 8:30 PM everyday.

Iskcon Temple

Get mesmerized by the tunes of Hare Rama Hare Krishna at the Iskcon Temple. This is the most well maintained temple in Vrindavan. Once inside the temple you will see devotees soulfully dancing and chanting Hare Rama Hare Krishna . There are many facilities within the temple premises for the visitors. You can buy a religious book, gifts, souvenirs, have food or visit the holy museum located upstairs in the temple.

Prem Mandir

The Prem Mandir is a must visit temple in Vrindavan . This architectural wonder is built of white Italian marble. As these places are very popular but it is very difficult to plan what to see first and how to go from one city to another. But thankfully you have covered all these useful tips in your blog. I have been to Mathura and Vrindavan but not Agra and very soon planning for it.

I have been to Taj Mahal once and we were unlucky because the entire morning Taj Mahal was closed for some reason so all the visitor had to wait to the afternoon and it was crowded!

I did not realise that Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Agra, only 60 kms ahead! I visited those cities when I was a little child and don’t remember much from my trip except that my grandparents took me to several temples while we were there! Agra, however, was a more recent trip for me so I have to agree with Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri being the top 3 places to visit there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Agra because of the Taj Mahal! You’ve also given me enough inspiration to make it a worthwhile trek out of New Delhi to see. I think the fort would be a great historical aspect to understand Agra and the surrounding region and I love the temples that you included!

Its been a bit over a decade since I went on this trip. It was a super memorable one coz we took a day and half train from Chennai to Delhi! It was indeed super fun. Yeah, I did one of those coach tours from Delhi to Agra, Mathura & Vrindavan. We went to Fatehpur Sikri by ourselves later. Nostalgic…..

I have visit Mathura and Vrindavan these are amazing holy places in India. Agra is very nice too because of famous Taj Mahal and fatehpur sikri.

To be honest, never thought that the Agra area is that large. It needs two days, that is good to know.

Agra and Brindavan are my favortie places. I love the serenity and the beautiful buildings around this place. I think I’ll explore these places one more time.

This is a complete tour of Braj Bhumi. It takes you to Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Mahavan, Goverdhan, Nand Gaon and Barsana. Gokul is located at a distance of 12 Kms from Mathura. If is a quiet town believed to be the place where Lord Krishna was brought up by his foster mother Yashodha. Important places to visit here are Raman Reti and Gokulnath temple. Govardhan is a popular pilgrimage place for Hindus and is located on a sandstone hill called Giriraj. Hindu mythology believes that young Lord Krishna held this hill for 7 days and nights on the tip of his finger to protect the people of Braj from wrath of heavy rain brought on by Lord Indra. Nand Gaon is the Village of Nand, the foster father of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna was brought here to be kept safe from his tyrannical uncle Kansa. Krishna spent his childhood here. Also located here is the Pan Sarovar. This is believed to be the place were Krishna used to bring his cows for water. Barsana is the believed to be the birth place of Lord Krishna’s beloved Radha Rani. All temples here are dedicated to Radha & Krishna.

DAY 1 - Arrive Delhi and drive to Mathura

• After early breakfast checkout from the hotel.
• Drive to Vrindavan. It is located at a distance of 150 Kms and it takes 3 hours to reach Vrindavan.
• In Vrindavan we first visit the most popular Banke Bihari Temple. We also visit Madan Mohan Temple, Govinda Dev temple, Sri Ranganatha temple (South Indian style temple), Jugal Kishore temple, Shahji temple, Jaipur Temple and Radha Ramana temple.
• Later we travel to Mathura and check in at the hotel.
• In Mathura we visit Krishna Janambhumi Complex, Kesavadeva Temple and Dwarkadhish Temple.
• Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2 - Mathura – Day excursion to Gokul Mahavan & Govardhan

• Breakfast at the hotel.
• After breakfast we drive to Gokul. Here we visit Gokulnath Temple, Raja Thakur Temple, Gopal Lalji Temple, Morwala Temple and Raman Reti.
• From Gokul we drive to Mahavan where we visit Chaurasi Khambha temple.
• Later we drive to Govardhan which is famous for Goverdhan Hill. Here we will visit the 400 years old Har Deva temple. A lot of pilgrims like to perform parikarma of Goverdhan hill (8 kms appox).
• In the evening return to your hotel in Mathura.

DAY 3 - Mathura – Day excursion to Nandgaon and Barsana

• After breakfast we visit Nand Gaon. This is the village of foster father Nand of Lord Krishnan. Visit the Nand Rai temple and other temples located in the vicinity. Also visit Pan Sarovar, a large lake. Hindus believe that Lord Krishna used bring his cows here for water.
• Later we travel to Barsana, believed to be the home of Lord Krishna’s beloved, Radha Rani. The most beautiful temple here is Radha Rani temple also fondly called Ladliji Temple. We will also visit Man mandir and Mor Kutir.
• Return to Mathura in the evening.
• Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 4 - Mathura to Delhi

• Checkout from the hotel.
• Later drive back to Delhi.
• On arrival we transfer you to the train station or airport for your train / flight to onward destination.

All About the Shri Radha Rani Temple

A holy place of worship for the Hindus, the Shri Radha Rani Temple is situated in Uttar Pradesh. The shrine dedicates itself to Radha, the Hindu goddess. Shri Laadli Lal (meaning beloved daughter and son), another name for Radha Krishna, are the temple's principal deities.

History of Shri Radha Rani Temple

Legends believe that the Radha Rani Temple is 5000 years old. Before King Vajranabh (Krishna's great-grandson) constructed it, the temple was lying in ruins. Narayan Bhatt was a student of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Raja Veer Singh, in 1675 AD, erected the temple. Later, Narayan Bhatt, with the assistance of Raja Todarmal, one of Akbar's governors, did the current temple edifice.

Interestingly, the temple is also tied with popular mythology. According to the story, Krishna's father Nanda and Radha's father Vrishbhanu were good friends. Nanda was in charge of Gokula, and Vrishbhanu was in charge of Rawal. However, fed up with Mathura's king Kansa's abuses, both of them and their people relocated to Nandgaon and Barsana.

Nanda chose Nandishvar Hill as his permanent abode, whereas Vrishbhanu chose Bhanugarh Hill, which later became Radha's residence. There are mediaeval temples dedicated to Radha and Krishna on the peaks of Nandishvar and Bhanugarh hills in both the twin cities of Barsana and Nandgaon.

While people call the Nandgaon temple the Nand Bhawan, they call the Barsana temple the Radha Rani temple and Shreeji temple.

Shriji Temple, with its arches, pillars, and red sandstone, depicts the flamboyance of a Mughal-era construction. This beautiful temple has an architectural style that was prominent at the time. Holi, one of the most joyous festivals of India brings a smile to a lot of faces. The festival of colour is also celebrated as a win of goodness over the evil. It is the time to let go of all the inhibitions, enjoy the experience of youthful flirtations and celebrate life with colours. Holi is undoubtedly a boisterous affair celebrated all through India with great fervor and vivacity. However, if you want to experience the traditional Holi, then you must not miss the Holi in Vrindavan, Mathura or the Braj Bhumi.

Holi in Vrindavan, Mathura and Barsana is visited by a number of people from all over the world. After all, it is an epic celebration. Although there is a fixed date for Holi, the celebration starts from Basant Panchami and continue beyond the day of Holi (Phalgun Purnima). To experience the best of Holi, we recommend you to arrive a few days before the actual Holi and stay beyond that date. And of course, it will be a field day for the photographers during Holi. There will be red, yellow, orange colours all over.

Legend of Holi

The festivities of Holi are mostly inspired by the mythological tales of Radha and Krishna. Their eternal love and joyful coquetry form the basis of all the different events celebrated during Holi in Vrindavan, Mathura and around. Krishna was the playful one. He teased Radha and the Gopikas (the girls of the village), flirted with them and also danced with them at Vrindavan. Everyone loved Krishna. Holi was the time when Radha and Krishna celebrated the season with colours and great festivities. Brindavan and Mathura are related to Radha and Krishna. Radha was born in Barsana and Krishna in Mathura. Vrindavan was the land created by Krishna for his love Radha Rani. The entire region was known as Brajbhoomi.

Braj Bhumi is spread across about 300 km on both sides of River Yamuna having Mathura and Brindavan at the centre. In the current day, Braj Bhumi is spread across Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Braj Bhumi is the land of Krishna, the place of Krishna Leela. Holi in Vrindavan and Mathura simply continues and celebrates these legends and stories.

Holi in Vrindavan Mathura

As I mentioned before, Holi is not confined to a single day in Vrindavan Mathura but is celebrated across a period of more than a week. There are various events being celebrated in various places. Here I would mention the main events of Holi. I have tried to keep it in chronological order.

1. Laddoo Holi, Barsana

While Holi is mainly the festival of colours, people in Brij Bhoomi celebrate Holi with flowers as well as Laddos (a rounded sweet). Barsana is the village of Radha Rani. There is a temple dedicated to Radha Rani on top of the Brahmagiri Hills.

The festival of Holi formally starts with the people of Nandgaon inviting the people of Barsana for the celebrations. This is known as Phag Amantran Utsav. Laddoo Holi is played on the same day in Barsana. Bundi Laddoos of bright yellow colour are thrown at each other in the temple. The entire place gets a hue of yellow. After all, yellow is the favourite colour of Shri Krishna.

On the next day, Lathmar Holi is played at Barsana and on the following day at Nandgaon.

2. Lathmar Holi, Barsana and Nandgaon

This is an interesting tradition and Holi celebration where the women chase the men and beat them with sticks or lathi. Hence the celebration is known as Lathmar Holi. Barsana and Nandgaon celebrate Lathmar Holi with great zeal and pomp.

Krishna lived at Nandgaon while Radha resided at Barsana. During Holi, Krishna would visit Barsana to meet Radha. He would tease Radha and her friends a lot. This offended the Gopis and Radha so much that they would chase Krishna and his friends with lathis and beat them.

The tradition is still kept alive with men from Nandgaon visiting Barsana for Lathmar Holi. The men would wear traditional clothes with turban and carry a shield with them. They would pay their tribute at the Radha Rani Temple and then gather in the streets. The ladies would then come out and beat the men with sticks on their shields. Of course, they would not want to hurt the men. There is electrifying energy all around the place during this time.

While the women hit the men with sticks, everyone is soaked in colours. Songs, dances, Bhaang Thandai are part of the celebration. The next day, men from Barsana go to Nandgaon for the same celebration.

If you are taking part at Lathmar Holi, be prepared to be drenched with colours. I don’t think there is any way to avoid it. Also, be careful of eve-teasing that might happen in this charged environment.

For photographers, this day can be a winner with so many colours and emotions everywhere. Do not hurry to take photographs. Be patient and take the time to find the perfect moment. You will be rewarded with some great shots. The best place to photograph is the top balcony of the temple. Reach there as early as possible. The entire place gets crowded very soon.

3. Chhadimar Holi, Gokul

Chhadimar Holi is celebrated in Gokul, a small village on the left bank of Yamuna River. Sri Krishna spent his days as infant and toddler at Gokul. So in Gokul, Krishna is treated as an infant. In most of the temples in Gokul, infant Krishna is seen on a Jhoola or swing. A procession of child Krishna on Jhoola is taken across the town and later Holi is celebrated. The people play Holi with small sticks called Chhadi, and so it is known as Chhadimar Holi. This is a mild version of Lathmar Holi.

4. Phoolonwali Holi

Phoolonwali Holi is the celebration of Holi in Vrindavan with flowers and not any colours. I felt this to be quite unique. While at Basanta Utsav in Shantiniketan , Holi is celebrated with dry colours or gulaal, but it was lovely to see the celebration with flowers.

Phoolonwali Holi in Vrindavan is celebrated on the Ekadashi before Holi at the Benke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. The gates of the temple open at around 4.00 pm and the Flowers’ Holi start right after that. This one is a short one taking place for about 15 to 20 minutes. The temple priests throw flowers at the devotees from the temple.

Since this takes place for such a short time, you can miss it easily. To take photographs, you need to be at the temple right at 4.00 pm and enter inside just as the temple opens.

5. Widow’s Holi, Vrindavan

The life of the widows in India had been difficult. Once upon a time, they were ostracized from society and had to lead a very difficult life. Most of them were sent to the ashrams Vrindavan and Kashi as the family did not want to take care of them. These ashrams were their refuge and a roof above their head. A widow’s life was devoid of any colour and merriment.

However, things are changing now. Vrindavan has shunned the age-old convention (in this case, the tradition was not a good one) and the widows in Pagal Baba’s Ashram now play with colours during Holi. The widows have broken the stereotypes and played Holi with flower petals and colours. This noble initiative was taken by Sulabh International and started only in 2013.

While the Widow’s Holi is a good opportunity for the photographers to capture some exceptional frames, we would, however, request you to be sensitive to the widows. Please do not force the ladies to pose for your photographs. Also, if possible, play Holi with them. Being a part of this grand celebration is an awesome experience.

6. Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

Banke Bihari Temple is the main centre of the celebration of Holi in Vrindavan. While Holi festivities last for about 4 days in Brindavan and Mathura, the main event at Banke Bihari Temple takes place on the day before the main Holi festival (the day before the full moon day). The temple opens its doors and allows everyone to come inside and play Holi with Lord Krishna himself. The priests throw colours and holy water at the crowds. There is chanting of hymns all and around. The atmosphere is totally out of the world.

There is a celebration inside the temple as well as outside it. It simply becomes impossible to avoid colours. The entire place is packed with a crowd. There are colours everywhere. It becomes a bit difficult to describe the feelings in words. Holi at Banke Bihari Temple is truly an experience to cherish and a photographer’s delight. However, local women mostly avoid this celebration as the crowd tends to get rowdy at times.

7. Holi Procession in Mathura and Holika Dahan

After you experience the Holi at Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, you can head towards Mathura for the festivities. Holi is celebrated in a grand manner at Dwarakadheesh Temple near Vishram Ghat in Mathura as well. The festivities start in Mathura a few days before the actual Holi.

In the afternoon, at around 2.00 pm a huge and colourful Holi procession starts from Vishram Ghat in Mathura and goes around the town before returning to the same place. As the procession moves, people sprinkle colours on each other, sing songs and has bhang laced thandai. A few vehicles are decorated with flowers is taken around in the procession. Also, children dressed as Radha and Krishna participate in it. As everyone plays Holi with each other, get ready to be drenched in colours.

Holika Dahan takes place in the evening before the main Holi. In this, a large effigy of Holika is burnt along with a few rituals. The largest effigy is burnt near the Holi Gate.

According to Hindu mythology, Prahlad, the son of demon king Hiranyakashipu was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu, on the other hand, hated Lord Vishnu. The king tried to frighten Prahlad so that he stopped worshipping Vishnu but to no avail. So to punish Prahlad, the king asked his sister Holika to hold him in a blazing fire. Holika had a boon that she would not be burnt by fire. But when she tried to hold Prahlad within the fire, she herself was burnt and Prahlad was set free without any harm. Holika Dahan thus signifies the win of good over evil. It is believed that you should give up all your bad in the Holika fire and start anew.

When – A day before the Holi, 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Holika Dahan – In the evening

On the main day of Holi, a grand celebration takes place at the Dwarakadheesh Temple in Mathura. The gates of the temple open at 10.00 am, but a big crowd gathers there already from before.  Inside the temple, a leaf bowl full of gulal and flowers are placed before the deity. You can also throw some gulal towards the deity.

If you start early in the morning, then you can see the procession at the Yamuna Ghat and also see the preparation of Bhaang by the priests.

The playing with colours starts later. Here mostly local men and kids participate in this. Women are conspicuously absent. However, many women travellers do participate in the celebrations.

Here, I would recommend the women travellers to be accompanied by a male partner. Things can get out of hand at times.

Where – Dwarakadheesh Temple, Mathura

When – 10.30 am to 1.30 pm

9. Dauji ka Huranga, Dau Ji Temple, Baldeo

Huranga is Holi celebration at its peak. This is the last prominent celebration of Holi at Dauji Temple located in Baldeo, 30 km from Mathura. Balram, elder brother of Sri Krishna is fondly known as Dau.

Huranga is actually crazy. Celebrated a day after Holi at Baldeo, the sleepy village, Huranga sees the women getting naughty. They beat and strip the men and then throw away their clothes. The men try to take cover while they are chased by hundreds of women. The tradition dates back to almost 500 years back when the Krishna Temple was established.  Usually, only the members of the original family who established the Krishna Temple participate in Huranga, but others are also welcome to participate in the madness and take photographs as well. Huranga literally means riot and Dauji ka Huranga is a total riot in all sense. If by any chance a man gets in front of the women, they would rarely escape from them and get stripped!

The gates of the temple open around 12.30 pm when the men come into the courtyard holding buckets of colours. Next, the women in traditional clothes enter the courtyard and start stripping the men! Finally, the entire village takes part in the joyous celebration by jumping into the red pond of colours in the temple courtyard.

The theme of Huranga usually comes from the Rasleela of Radha and Krishna. During Holi, Krishna and his friends would tease Radha and the Gopis. The girls would get upset and then beat them up. The tradition still continues.

Some Practical Tips for celebrating Holi in Vrindavan, Mathura and Barsana

• Holi in Brindavan, Mathura and Barsana can get crazy at times. So prepared to be splashed with lots of colours, water and other things as well. Rotten tomatoes were even thrown at us once.
• The clothes you will be wearing for Holi will be unusable after that. So choose your dress accordingly.
• It is better to wear a cap to protect your hair.
• Do not carry valuables with you.
• I would again advise the girls to travel in groups with male members shielding them all the time.
• If you are a photographer, then it is important to make your camera Holi-proof. There will be water and colors all around you and so proper protection is needed for your camera gear. Have waterproof covers for your camera and smartphones also.
• Finally, enjoy the Holi is a glass of Bhaang and thandai.

Is Holi in Vrindavan safe to attend?

This is the most commonly asked question to us – whether or not to girls travel to Vrindavan and Mathura alone for Holi. For my part, I had also thought about this at a length. Here is what I think about it.

If you are not fond of a crowd, then it is better to stay at a distance. There will be people and lots of them. There is no way of escaping colors as well. It is the festival of colors and will be drenched with colors. And now comes the next important question.

Should Women Attend the Holi Festival Alone?

I would suggest you to be accompanied by a group of known males. I do not want to sound sexist or over-cautious, but this is for safety reasons. This is a festival where liberties are taken and consent is assumed if you are present at the place where the celebration is going on.

Harassment of girls and women is not uncommon. Even though there are police and security personnel in the surrounding, there is nothing stopping these incidents. Often men with colored faces come on bikes and grab the girls and apply colors on them forcibly. Foreign travellers are also the target of this harassment. Sometimes, even the men are not spared. So if you are a girl travelling alone or in a small group, I would advise you to find other travellers and attend the festival altogether. You can also join any Holi tour so that you can be with others as well.

These incidents do not happen to each and every person, but they are also not uncommon. The chances of eve-teasing and harassment are much lower if you are in large groups accompanied by male members.

Holi is a fun festival. People will apply colors if you are celebrating the festival. Just be cautious and alert and try to stick to a group. After all, you would definitely want to enjoy the festival and not always think about what might happen.

How to Reach?

Mathura is about 180 km from Delhi by road. Buses are available from Delhi ISBT at Kashmere Gate to Mathura. From Mathura, Vrindavan is about 14 km by road, Barsana is another 50 km and Nandgaon is about 60 km from Mathura. You will get buses and private taxis to all these places from Mathura.

I already experienced the Holi in Bundi (2012) and in Udaipur (2015), and I will be back with my wife to India in March, and decided to spend 2 days (we only have 13 days for Rajasthan) in Mathura or Vrindavan Now I am slightly confused with the dates… Holi at Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan is be the day before the Holi, so that is March 7th, from 09:00 am ? Followed by the Holi Procession in Mathura and Holika Dahab on the same day ? And on March 8th, the day of the Holi, it is at Dwarakadheesh Temple in Mathura ? Sorry to be so trivial in my questions, but I read everything and the opposite on various websites. Looking forward to your answer, and thanks again for the great post! The dates I found out for 2023 are – Lathmar Holi at Barsana – March 2 Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon – March 3 Phholonwali Holi at Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan – March 5 Widow’s Holi – March 7 Holi – March 8

4. Radha Vallabh Mandir

You need to come to Mathura junction from your residence for exploring places to go in Mathura. You will get an tempo traveller that will take to drop you at Vrindavan. The temple will be open from 6 Am to 12 pm and then from 4 Pm to 9 pm. Radha Vallabh temple is 500m away from the Banke Bihari temple. Shri Harivansh Mahaprabhu established this temple in Vrindavan. Radha Vallabha Darshan Durlabh is very famous here. It is said that there those devotees come whom the God himself calls for blessings.

5. Vishram Ghat

This is the Ghat places to visit in Mathura where Krishna took rest after killing Kans. This is a beautiful Ghat on the banks of Yamuna River. Vishram Ghat is 1 km away from the Krishna janmashtami. For coming to this Ghat you need to take the electric Rickshaw. You will see the Ashram of Durvasa Rishi on this Ghat. It is said that Durvasha Rishi did Tapasya for 10000 years. The Gopis did bring food for the Rishis on this Ghat. You will see the Kalindi Krishna temple. This is the only temple where you will find idols of Krishna and Yumanu together.

6. Kusum Sarovar

It is said that once Radha and the other Gopis went to Kusum Sarovar to pluck the flowers. When they were plucking the flowers the Gopis got away from Radha. The Saree of Radha got caught in the thorns of the garden. Then Krishna took the form of a gardener and started scolding Gopis. Then Krishna made a pond to wash the flowers. It is 2Km away from Govardhan Hill. You see hundreds of stairs around the Sarovar. The water is still and the environment is peaceful in Kusum sarovar, one of the tourist places in Mathura Uttar Pradesh.

You can come to see the house of Nand Baba.  This is the place where Krishna used to live with Nand Baba and Yashoada. How to reach Vrindavan?

The most well-connected airport closest to Vrindavan is Delhi. Hence, you can reach Delhi and then take a bus to Mathura which is located about 180 kms away via the Yamuna expressway .

You can take the state transport buses if you’re on a budget or the more comfortable private buses that run very frequently between the popular locations.

From Mathura, you can take a shared auto-rickshaw that will take you to Vrindavan for about Rs. 20. If you hire a private auto, it’ll run you about Rs. 200 to reach Vrindavan .

You can also ask your hotel to pick you up from Mathura bus stand, but that’ll be costlier than the above options.

It formally marks the start of Holi as people from Nandgaon visit Barsana to invite its natives to celebrate Holi together.

According to Indian traditions the start of any auspicious event has to be marked by consuming something sweet. Laddoo is a circular Indian sweetmeat that crumbles easily.

Hence, in the spirit of the festival, Boondi Laddoos as well as yellow powder colours are used to play Holi on this day .

The celebration takes place for a very short while in the public square and can be easily missed. So, we suggest that you consult a local in Vrindavan about the timings.

Holi In Barsana: Lathmar Holi

Lathmar Holi is one of the most bizarre celebrations of Holi in Vrindavan you will ever witness in India.

It has a unique tradition where the women of Barsana village chase the men and beat them (playfully) with sticks! The entire atmosphere is that of youthful flirtations and playful mischief.

Everyone is dressed in traditional attire. The men wear turbans and use shields in order to protect them from the playful beatings of the women.

Holi in Gokul: Chhadi Maar Holi

Gokul is a village located about 27 kms from Vrindavan and the place where Lord Krishna spent his toddler years.

As Lord Krishna was just an infant while he was in Gokul, all the temples in Gokul worship His toddler form.

There is a huge procession where His idol is paraded across the village as people throw colours at each other, have bhaang-thandai and play with chhadis (sticks smaller than lathis).

Holi in Vrindavan: Flower Holi

Flower Holi, locally known as Phoolon Wali Holi in Hindi, is a sight to behold in Vrindavan. As the name suggests, in this celebration, instead of powder colors, people play Holi with flower petals.

The event takes place four days before Holi on the pious Hindu date of Ekadashi , and lasts for barely 20 minutes in the iconic Banke Bihari Temple!

The temple gates open at 4 PM and the temple priests throw flower petals at the devotees and the visitors!

Today, because of education and awareness about this social evil, things are a lot better. However, there are still a few such women left in ashrams, living a life without color.

One such ashram in Vrindavan, called Pagal Baba Ashram organizes Holi celebrations for these women. Holi is the time of the year where they can let go of all inhibitions and breakaway from stereotypes to enjoy Holi to their heart’s content.

Holi In Vrindavan: Banke Bihari Temple

This is the grand event! The event that has made celebrating Holi in Vrindavan a spectacle not to be missed! The reason why you’re reading this blog post. It takes place on the day before Holi inside as well as outside the Banke Bihari Temple.

The temple opens its gates to everyone who wishes to play Holi. Devotees, locals, tourists, the priests, everyone participates in the festivities.

Outside the temple, the streets are full of people colouring each other with gulaal (powder colour), hugging, greeting, dancing to the constant beats of the dhols .

Caution: Because of the nature of celebrations, Holi can become an unpleasant affair especially for women. Holi in Mathura: Holi procession and Holika Dahan

The celebration in Banke Bihari Temple will get wrapped up by 1 PM. Post that, catch a rickshaw and head to Mathura for the grand procession.

The procession starts from the Vishram Ghat, with the deity in a rath, accompanied with a couple of cars and people playing Holi with colors.

We even witnessed little kids who dressed as Lord Krishna in the procession. Play Holi, dance with the locals, sing bhajjans and enjoy a Bhaang-Thandai , a popular drink consumed during Holi.

In the evening, an effigy of the demon queen, Holika, is burned to commemorate the Legend of Prahlaad . The effigy burning is a retelling of this legend where the demon queen was burnt alive and the pious child, Prahlaad, was saved from her murderous attempts.

Locals pray to the fire and believe that this fire shall burn away all their sins, problems and future hardships. It’s a spectacle not to be missed.

A Few Practical tips for celebrating Holi in Vrindavan

• The festivities will be crazy! So be prepared to be splashed with colors, water, butter, laddoos and in some very rare cases, even cow-dung. You will soon be able to wash it away as water is constantly sprayed around on everyone.
• The popular drink Bhaang is made with leaves of the cannabis plant and and might give you a high. Consuming small amounts is fine. If you have never tried it, you can consume some in your room to gauge its effect beforehand or avoid it all together.
• Coating the exposed parts of your body with oil before participating in the celebrations is the best way to get rid of color later on. So, Coat your hair, face, beard, nails and toes. You will thank us for this.
• For additional protection, cover your hair with a cap or a bandana. Buy a pair of cheap shades from a local shop to protect your eyes. Keep your regular Ray-Bans at the hotel as you might lose them or break them.
• You will not be able to reuse the clothes that you wear during the celebrations. The color is a bit too hard to get off. The only way you can use these clothes again will be as souvenirs.
• As explained above, female travelers should be accompanied by men who can shield them. During the celebrations, certain liberties are taken and consent is generally assumed if you are standing in the street. If you’re a solo traveler, you can ask a group from your hotel or hostel to celebrate together.
• It is very important to Holi-proof your smartphones and camera. We’re talking about making them dust proof and water proof. Water and powder colours can really damage your equipment, so take adequate measures.

Fabulous Trip - Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Barsana, Govardhan

HARE KRISHNA!

Firstly, I travelled to Mathura from Delhi via Yamuna Expressway where I visit Dwarkadeesh Temple and Krishna Birthplace(Jail).

Then I go to a majestic place i.e. Vishram Ghat near Dwarkadeesh Temple and enjoyed boating on Holy Yamuna River. It was one of the amazing experience of my life because you can enjoy ultimate scenic beauty and peace there.

NOTE: One must consider the opening and closing timings of the temple.

Beware from monkey.

Next day, I proceed to Vrindavan where I first reached to Mata Vaishno Devi Temple where there is a huge idol of Goddess Amba Maa.

Then Nidhi Van is our next stop. It was believed that earlier Lord Krishna and Radha meet there.

Afterwards I reached to Bankey Bihari Temple. The beauty of the place is their "tadhakta badhakta bazaar". Don't forget to taste the food at that bazaar.

Then I go ISKCON Temple where I enjoyed an evening aarti.

Then I end my day at Prem Mandir whiich is brighten up in multiple lights.

NOTE: You must taste their famous "pedas" and "lassi".

On last day of my trip I travelled to Gokul where Lord Krishna resides in his childhood. Everything there gives you the feeling that Lord Krishna still leaves there. You must buy the "Mitti" from there.

Then I proceed to Govardhan where there is a part of mountain which is worshipped. One must opt for Govardhan Parikrama.

Then my last destination is Barsana where Goddess Radha lives. This is an amazing place as one has to reach the temple either through trekking or stairs. Don't worry it is quiet simple.

Then I returned from there.

Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 4 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized on Thursday that, following Ayodhya and Kashi, the government's attention is now directed towards Mathura and Vrindavan. He expressed optimism for a positive court ruling on Mathura as well and emphasized that the pace of development in Mathura-Vrindavan will be further accelerated.

Addressing the 'Vijay Sankalp Namankan Sabha' at the Seth B.N. Poddar Inter College ground, the Chief Minister also issued a warning to members of the Congress and INDIA bloc, emphasizing that the entire nation is prepared to reprimand those who disrespect 'Matra shakti.'During this, he actively campaigned for the incumbent MP and BJP's Lok Sabha candidate, Hema Malini. In addition, CM Yogi highlighted the accomplishments achieved during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ten-year tenure.

Extending his best wishes to sitting MP Hema Malini for her nomination from the Mathura seat, the Chief Minister remarked, "Hema ji is contesting from here for the third time, while other parties struggle to find suitable candidates. They resort to borrowing candidates, and when they fail even in that, Congress leaders lose their composure. Their derogatory remarks against 'matra shakti' are a disgraceful insult to half the population."He emphasized that the people of the INDIA alliance must recognize that Mathura is the sacred land of Radhe Rani and Yamuna Maiya. "Disrespecting half the population will invite nationwide backlash. This land reveres 'matra shakti', and any attempt to demean it will face severe consequences. While democracy upholds freedom of expression, it does not justify insulting 'matra shakti'," the CM warned.

The Chief Minister emphasized that while personal preferences may vary, targeting art, culture, and caste is unacceptable. He warned that those involved in such actions are digging their own graves. "Mathura is renowned for its artistry. Lord Krishna incarnated here with 16 arts. What better place to celebrate art?" he remarked.

He further stated, "There is a renowned Indian cinema actress, who has devoted her life to showcasing India's culture and civilization globally through her talent. Her performances draw crowds from across the world and she is widely admired. He questioned whether the Congress, SP, and BSP could have accomplished these tasks. "Could they have ensured a secure environment for both businessmen and daughters? Their stance on the welfare of entrepreneurs and daughters is evident from their speeches," he remarked.

Continuing, he asserted, "In such circumstances, there's no reason to expect anything from these parties or waste your vote on them. May our present remain safe and prosperous, leading to a future marked by unprecedented progress and the realization of a developed India. To achieve this, we must ensure Hema Malini's victory by surpassing the combined votes she received in the last two elections."The Chief Minister highlighted that for the first time, India has witnessed a government that, in line with the nation's ethos, safeguarded its dignity and fostered an environment of security and prosperity. Accompanied by State Government's Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Tejveer Singh, Baldev MLA Puran Prakash, and Maat MLA Rajesh Chaudhary, Hema Malini filed her nomination form at the Collectorate.

After Ayodhya and Kashi, the spotlight shifts to Mathura-Vrindavan: Yogi Adityanath

M athura ( Uttar Pradesh ) [India], April 4 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized on Thursday that, following Ayodhya and Kashi , the government's attention is now directed towards Mathura and Vrindavan. He expressed optimism for a positive court ruling on Mathura as well and emphasized that the pace of development in Mathura-Vrindavan will be further accelerated.

Addressing the 'Vijay Sankalp Namankan Sabha' at the Seth B.N. Poddar Inter College ground, the Chief Minister also issued a warning to members of the Congress and INDIA bloc, emphasizing that the entire nation is prepared to reprimand those who disrespect 'Matra shakti.'

During this, he actively campaigned for the incumbent MP and BJP's Lok Sabha candidate, Hema Malini . In addition, CM Yogi highlighted the accomplishments achieved during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ten-year tenure.

Extending his best wishes to sitting MP Hema Malini for her nomination from the Mathura seat, the Chief Minister remarked, "Hema ji is contesting from here for the third time, while other parties struggle to find suitable candidates. They resort to borrowing candidates, and when they fail even in that, Congress leaders lose their composure. Their derogatory remarks against 'matra shakti' are a disgraceful insult to half the population."

He emphasized that the people of the INDIA alliance must recognize that Mathura is the sacred land of Radhe Rani and Yamuna Maiya. "Disrespecting half the population will invite nationwide backlash. This land reveres 'matra shakti', and any attempt to demean it will face severe consequences. While democracy upholds freedom of expression, it does not justify insulting 'matra shakti'," the CM warned.

The Chief Minister emphasized that while personal preferences may vary, targeting art, culture, and caste is unacceptable. He warned that those involved in such actions are digging their own graves. "Mathura is renowned for its artistry. Lord Krishna incarnated here with 16 arts. What better place to celebrate art?" he remarked.

He further stated, "There is a renowned Indian cinema actress, who has devoted her life to showcasing India's culture and civilization globally through her talent. Her performances draw crowds from across the world and she is widely admired. If members of the Congress party have an issue with this, it raises doubts about their own standing, perhaps even in the eyes of God."
