Located on the rugged central coast of California, the best way to get to Big Sur is by car. It is one of the most scenic and renowned routes in the country. If you can, a weekend is the ideal time to spend exploring Big Sur.

Hiking the Waterfall Overlook Trail at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a must-have thing to do! The trail features McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that cascades onto a pristine sandy cove and flows directly into the Pacific Ocean. Another top thing to do is visit Pfeiffer Beach, also known as the purple sand beach. This one-of-a-kind beach features epic rock formations, tide pooling, and, after a rainstorm, unique purple sand.

Plan your stay at the Big Sur Lodge. The lodge is nestled in the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, providing access to miles and miles of hiking trails in the redwood forest. The beautiful coastal town of Monterey, California , is one of the best hidden gems in the United States . Just 2 hours south of San Francisco, this seaside town makes for the perfect weekend getaway. With warm temperatures sitting around 62℉ (17℃) in February, you can comfortably enjoy all this town has to offer. 

Experience the best of the California coast with the small town of Monterey offering multiple beaches to explore with great surfing and scuba diving. The Old Fisherman’s Warf is a great area to see seals and do some shopping.

If you’re a golf lover (or just like spotting celebrities), February is a great month to visit Monterey, thanks to the annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am event. February is also a great month to spot gray whales off the coast of Monterey. 

The town is incredibly transit-friendly, allowing you to see most sights without a car. You can even travel to the sister town of Carmel by the Sea with transit. Once you are in town, renting a bicycle to explore the coastal scenery is a great way to see the area. The city is also incredibly car-friendly, with lots of great pullouts to access the beaches, and a drive down Ocean View Boulevard offers incredibly rewarding views. 

The town itself is fairly in line with the rest of California’s pricing -another reason it is one of the best places to visit in California in February. There is a good mix of budget and luxury hotels offered here. For those looking for a deal, Sunset Inn is a great option that doesn’t compromise on comfort, offering a Jacuzzi on-site, which is perfect for a February visit.

Best Places to Visit in California in February: Central California

Yosemite national park.

Yosemite National Park is easily one of the best places to visit in California in February. After all, February is a quiet month at this iconic national park . Therefore, you will likely have the park all to yourself. Plus, you’ll enjoy year-round access to Yosemite Valley and Wawona. Just be aware that Tioga Road will definitely be closed and won’t open up again until spring. 

So, if you decide to fly into either San Francisco or Los Angeles , rent a car and drive to the park. Once there, visitors coming from San Francisco will use the Arch Rock/Big Oak entrance, while visitors from LA will use the South Entrance. 

Now, because you will be unable to use Tioga Road to enter the park, your trip to this park will be a bit longer. As a result, try to spend at least 2-3 days in the park. This way, you will have plenty of time to try skiing at Badger Pass, ice skating at Curry Village with Half Dome in the background, and exploring the Yosemite Museum. You can also book a fun snowshoeing tour through Yosemite Valley and the Giant Sequoias since hiking at this time of year can be difficult. 

In general, though, plan on spending around $160.00 per day. However, that price will vary based on the activities you want to do. Finally, book a room at the Yosemite Valley Lodge. It’s a lovely little place near Yosemite Falls that has a couple of restaurants on-site, too.

Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes is a winter paradise because of the massive snow accumulation that usually occurs by February. It is one of the best places to visit in California in February. Whether you are a hardcore skier or enjoy the white-dusted trees, Mammoth offers endless snow-based activities.

A visit to Mammoth Lakes should be at least three days. Angelenos often drive five hours north for the weekend to get in a few days of skiing before heading home. Visitors can also fly into Bishop and drive 45 minutes or fly into the Mammoth private airport. Those flying into Bishop will want to rent a car. Otherwise, it can be a little difficult to get around town.

For lodging, The Village Lodge in the center of town is popular, as is The Westin Monache Resort. Both are within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the gondola at Mammoth Mountain. There are also numerous homes available to rent. 

The most popular activity in Mammoth is skiing or snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, where there are 175 named trails, 25 trail lifts, and a terrain park. Mammoth Mountain is a world-class ski resort that is approachable for every skill level. If you are not ready to hit the slopes, other popular activities in Mammoth include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is a beautiful, ocean-front city on the American Riviera, and it is one of the best places to visit in California in February. It is full of great restaurants, museums, and outdoor adventures. There are plenty of things to do in Santa Barbara to fill a weekend getaway. Santa Barbara is easily reached by car two hours north of Los Angeles or by flight to the Santa Barbara Airport.

February is a great time to visit as the temperatures are temperate and comfortable. Home to many preserved, unique theaters, visitors can experience the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. During the festival, there are celebrity tribute events, special guests, and more than a week of special movie screenings. For Valentine’s Day, many of the restaurants offer a special fixed menu. One of the best spots for a romantic Valentine’s Day meal is Zaytoon. 

Santa Barbara has a lovely, walkable downtown area along State Street, the main avenue. This is where the main buzz of restaurants and shopping happens. It is also the best place to stay. Hotels like Drift or the Californian are great options.

To spend your time, you could start at Chase Palms Park, where you’ll also find a popular biking and walking trail. It is a beachfront trail that passes by Stearns Wharf and the bright Chromatic Gate. If you head out on the pier, you can watch the kayakers, boaters, pelicans, seals, and more.

The Museum of Art and of the historic Spanish Mission are also both popular activities for locals and visitors alike. In the evening, head to the Funk Zone for fun wine bars, breweries, and wall art. All of these options are at little to no cost, which helps balance the budget out, as dining and lodging in Santa Barbara is expensive.

Death Valley

February is one of the few pleasant months to visit Death Valley National Park, the lowest, driest, and hottest place in North America. During this time of year, the weather conditions are ideal for venturing into this vast Eastern California desert expanse. The temperatures are warm without being excessively hot, and winter is the only time of the year when hiking is actually possible.

While it is possible to get a good overview of Death Valley in one day , given its status as the largest national park in the contiguous USA, spending 2-3 days is ideal to see all the landmarks. This way, you won’t feel rushed hiking and driving and don’t have to be torn between two magnificent sunset spots.

Reaching Death Valley is most convenient by car, given its remote location, but it is still one of the best places to visit in California in February. The park is roughly a two-hour drive from Las Vegas and around four hours from Los Angeles. Just make sure to fill up your tank before entering!

There’s plenty to do in Death Valley, from summiting the Mesquite Sand Dunes to driving the Artist’s Palette loop to stargazing at an International Dark Sky Park. Walk on the salt flats of Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, and make sure to watch the sunset at Zabriskie Point.

Park entry is priced at $30 per vehicle for a 7-day pass, or you can get the $80 annual America the Beautiful National Park pass. Additionally, most people opt to camp within the park, although lodges within park boundaries are available too. For a central location, Stovepipe Wells is the prime area to stay in the park.

San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is a college town in one of the most versatile locations in California. Everything you could ask for in a California town is within 15 minutes of each other, from wineries to incredible hikes to the beach to an adorable downtown. While you could truly visit San Luis Obispo during any month of the year and have an awesome time, February is a special month because of several fun festivals!

SLO Craft Beer Fest is one of the best festivals in San Luis Obispo each year, and it always happens in February. You can sample hundreds of beers both locally and regionally from some of the best microbreweries and well-known breweries. There are also several art festivals and performances, such as an annual Jazz Festival and shows that specifically come through San Luis Obispo in February.

You should plan to spend at least a weekend in San Luis Obispo, as there are also many incredible free things to do in San Luis Obispo that should be incorporated into your trip, too! It is recommended to have a car while in San Luis Obispo, as public transportation is not well established here.

The best place to stay in San Luis Obispo is the famed Madonna Inn . This unique hotel offers a fun experience while you are staying there and also has some of the best cake you will ever taste!

You can budget ~$400-500 for a weekend trip here for two people to have ample money to experience the food scene and visit a winery (or two!), but there are many outdoor activities, such as hiking, that will not cost you a penny. Either way, it is one of the best places to visit in California in February.

Best Places to Visit in California in February: Southern California

San clemente .

San Clemente, often referred to as the “Spanish Village by the Sea,” is definitely one of the best places to visit in California in February. The mild weather is perfect for exploring the town’s stunning architecture or strolling along the beautiful beaches.

You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy an Orange County beach vacation thanks to affordable beachside camping at multiple State Park campgrounds close to town. 

San Clemente State Park offers the best beach and campground combination but fills up quickly. Plus, with your $30 per night camping fees, you get access to all California State Parks including multiple pristine southern California beaches. If cooking at your campsite doesn’t fit your weekend plans and your budget allows, then check out Rocco’s Pizza or grab a pint at Artifex Brewing.

Orange County is a premier surfing destination and is a glorious location for just relaxing on the beach.  Touring the Casa Romantica or the Surfing Heritage Center are just a few of the many recommendations in the San Clemente Guide .   

For those who prefer more rugged adventures, the Peaceful Valley trail system offers mountain biking and hiking opportunities that cut through the scenic California hills. San Clemente is perfect for a weekend beach getaway. Two nights is enough time to explore the area but more time could be added if you are a beach lover.

Carlsbad is a great place to visit year-round, but it is one of the best places to visit in California in February. While the weather might not be quite hot enough to swim at the beach, it’s still pleasant, so you can comfortably spend time outside exploring the area. February is also the off-season in Carlsbad, so you won’t have to deal with crowds. 

There are a ton of fun things to do in Carlsbad , especially for people who love being outdoors. Consider spending some time biking or walking along the Carlsbad Beach Boardwalk. There are also great easy hiking spots in the area, such as the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Northside Trail.

Additionally, you’ll want to stroll through Carlsbad Village, which is the charming downtown area. There are tons of great restaurants and bars, as well as local shops. Beer lovers should stop by Pure Project for a taste of the San Diego beer culture. 

I recommend spending two to three days in Carlsbad. When it comes to accommodations, it’s best to stay in Carlsbad Village, as you’ll be within walking distance of the beach and all of the best eateries and shops. The Best Western Plus Beach View Lodge is a top-rated hotel and is one of the least expensive options that’s right by the beach. You can also find more budget-friendly hotels a bit more inland, such as the Days Inn by Wyndham. 

The more affordable hotels tend to fall in the range of $100 to $200 per night in February. Since there are plenty of free things to do, you can easily visit and just spend money on food and accommodations. 

A car can be helpful if you plan on exploring beyond the Carlsbad Village area, but the village itself is very walkable. You can also take the train directly into Carlsbad Village from Downtown San Diego, making it an easy destination to get to for those flying in.

Long Beach is one of the best places to visit in California in February. Prices are lower, there are no crowds, the weather is usually good, and on the odd rainy day, there are plenty of indoor attractions to keep you entertained.

While many think of Long Beach as an extension of Los Angeles, it is actually the 43rd most populous city in the US, with almost 500,000 inhabitants. And its two biggest attractions, the Aquarium of the Pacific and the retired ocean liner Queen Mary are world-famous.

Long Beach is easily accessible both by car and public transit. The city even has its own airport! And while a car is always handy in California, it isn’t strictly necessary in Long Beach. Not only are most of the attractions walkable, but the City of Long Beach runs Passport, a free bus shuttle connecting all the main points of interest.

Two or three days are ideal for a trip to Long Beach. Learn more about sea life at the Aquarium (as February is still migration season for Gray Whales, you could even add in a whale-watching cruise) on one day. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring shops and restaurants at Shoreline Village. 

On the second day, take a tour of the Queen Mary with her illustrious (and haunted) history. And a sunny day in February is perfect for a visit to Catalina Island without the masses. The Catalina Express leaves right from Long Beach.

You will find plenty of business hotels in Downtown Long Beach and near the waterfront. But a definite highlight is an overnight stay on the iconic Queen Mary! As far as budget is concerned, a hotel room will run you around $200-250 per night. For tours and activities, $100 to 200 should be enough, depending on what you plan to see and do.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a quintessential part of California and one of the best places to visit in California in February with its mild weather and never-ending list of attractions and activities. A visit during this time of year allows you to enjoy the city’s attractions without the stifling summer heat or the peak tourist influx. 

In February, make sure to explore the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, visit the Griffith Observatory for stunning views, and take advantage of the cooler weather to hike in the scenic Runyon Canyon Park. Explore the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) or take part in the festive Chinese New Year celebrations in the bustling Chinatown district.

It’s recommended to spend at least 4-5 days in LA to fully immerse yourself in the diverse offerings of the city. While Los Angeles does offer a public transportation system (it’s fairly mediocre) and Uber or Lyft, having a car can significantly enhance your flexibility in exploring its expansive neighborhoods and nearby attractions.

For a convenient stay, consider looking for accommodation in the centrally located Hollywood area. Here, you’ll find a variety of options that cater to different budgets, with easy access to major attractions and the nightlife scene. 

When it comes to budget, Los Angeles can cater to both budget-conscious travelers (enjoy free activities like strolling along the Venice Beach Boardwalk or window-shopping in Rodeo Drive) and those seeking luxurious experiences (think fine dining and high-end shopping). 

Los Angeles also makes for an excellent base for day trips to nearby attractions, including Disneyland for a dose of magic or even Big Bear for an escape to the snow-covered mountains of Southern California . With its blend of urban and cultural attractions, lovely weather, and natural beauty, Los Angeles in February is an unforgettable experience for every type of traveler.

Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth all year round. However, one of the best times to visit is in February. For one, students are often in school (besides Presidents Day weekend), which means smaller crowds, shorter lines, and less expensive prices.

In addition, the February weather in California is very moderate. You can comfortably explore the Disney parks for a full day in a t-shirt or sweatshirt. This is much more bearable than the super-hot summer. Finally, February is a great time to visit Disneyland because there are fun events such as Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day.

The best way to get to Disneyland is by flying into Orange County (John Wayne Airport) or LA (LAX). From there, take an Uber or taxi to your hotel near the theme park. I recommend staying on property at Disneyland at the Grand Californian if you are willing to splurge. Alternatively, the Best Western or Hyatt House are just across the street and offer great rates.

If you stay within walking distance of Disneyland, I do not recommend getting a rental car since it will cost money to park, and you really won’t need it.

During your time at Disneyland, I recommend spending at least one full day in each park. Visit the top attractions such as Space Mountain, Rise of the Resistance, Radiator Springs Racers, and other fun rides. In addition, eat a ton of great Disney food and interact with the characters. You will not be sorry as Disneyland is one of the best places to visit in California in February. 

Mojave National Preserve

The Mojave National Preserve offers a stunning desert landscape with rugged mountains and unique flora and fauna, like cholla cactuses and Joshua trees. February is a lovely time to visit, given that the crowds are low, the temperature is cool and pleasant, and, towards the end of the month, you’ll even get to see springtime flowers in bloom. 

There’s plenty to keep you busy in the National Preserve for a weekend and it makes for one of the best places to visit in California in February. For example, you can explore the preserve’s impressive number of Joshua tree groves—it actually has the highest population of them on the planet! The best place to see them is along Clima Road, which has the world’s largest forest of Joshua trees. 

Additionally, bake in some time to explore the preserve’s unique hiking trails, like the Kelso Dunes. This short but steep trail takes you to the top of a towering sand dune, providing you with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. Be sure to stay in the park once the sun sets—the limited light pollution means you’ll get to enjoy some of the best stargazing in the country. 

The best way to get to the Mojave National Preserve is by car. Located just one-hour southwest of Harry Reid International Airport in Nevada, it’s an excellent addition to any Las Vegas itinerary. Alternatively, it’s a three-hour drive east of Bakersfield or a three-and-a-half-hour drive northwest of Los Angeles. 

The preserve has several excellent campgrounds, but if you prefer a more solid roof over your head, consider a stay at the sleek and hip Mojave Sands Hotel.

Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is a great place to visit in California, especially in February. The charming winter weather is perfect for sitting by the fire with a hot chocolate. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the beautiful trees surrounding the lake covered in snow, giving you a picturesque view that you wouldn’t expect in California.

At an elevation of 5,175 feet, Lake Arrowhead is one of California’s hidden gems. It’s perfect for winter sports enthusiasts, such as skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, and winter hiking. You can reach this location from Los Angeles or San Diego in just over two hours by car, making it a great weekend getaway from these Southern California cities. You can easily spend 2-3 days here as there is plenty to do.

There are many Airbnbs in the area within walking distance of Lake Arrowhead’s village, but it’s recommended to bring a car for easier access to the slopes, restaurants, and other places of interest. You could also take a 45-minute trip to Big Bear, another popular destination, if you have extra time.

Overall, for a trip to Lake Arrowhead, you should budget at least $120 to $160 per day, which includes car rental, lodging, food, and activities. If you’re traveling on a budget and looking to save on lodging, you could opt to stay in neighboring  Cedar Glen , which is under 3 miles from Lake Arrowhead.

During the wintertime, Bodega Bay hosts some interesting events including a Chowder Day in January. The event includes chowder tastings from local restaurants, whale watching, and a chance to pick up fresh seafood at the waterfront.

In February, the Lake Sonoma Steelhead Festival celebrates the steelhead trout season, with entertaining activities and live music concerts.

Two film festivals take place in Sonoma County in March: the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival , which presents documentary films made by independent filmmakers, and the Sonoma International Film Festival, which screens over 90 international films at venues in the town of Sonoma, all within easy walking distance of the historic central plaza.

9. Yosemite Firefall at Yosemite National Park

During most of the year, Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park is one of the least impressive waterfalls in the park. But visiting it is easily one of the coolest things to do in California in February if you’re arriving later in the month. 

From mid-to-late February, the sunset lights up the water, making it glow orange and turn into what’s called the Yosemite Firefall. Keep in mind that, because of how rare this happens and how many people want to see it, you’ll need reservations to get into the park come the end of February. 

10. Santa Barbara’s International Film Festival

Running for 11 days at the beginning of February, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival makes this seaside town one of the best places to visit in California in winter. 

This film festival, which brings together stories from different regions all over the world, showcases more than 200 films, as well as panels where you can hear from some of cinema’s greatest and up-and-coming stars. 

11. Lodi’s Wine and Chocolate Festival

California has a lot of towns with incredible wineries, and Lodi is one that’s too often forgotten. But with the Lodi Wine & Chocolate Festival , this charming town becomes one of the best places to visit in February.

Running the first weekend in February, this festival allows you to sip your way around more than 50 participating wineries, with wines paired perfectly with locally made chocolate treats. 

12. Ripon’s Almond Blossom Festival

Come February, the almond blossoms are in bloom, painting the town of Ripon white and pink. You can join in the celebration by taking part in the annual Almond Blossom Festival , which is the last full weekend of February.

Events will be happening all weekend long, including the Almond Blossom Parade, the Miss Almond Blossom coronation, a carnival, and a vendor fair. 

13. Cali Vibes in Long Beach

From February 16 to February 18, Long Beach is home to Cali Vibes and is one of the best places to visit in California in February. This festival is filled with good vibes, great music, and tons of fun. Performers range from reggae acts to rappers to rock stars, so there’s a little something for everyone, though the vibes, food, and ambiance are very reggae-inspired.

14. Modernism Week Palm Springs

Palm Springs is known for its unique modernist architecture. Though seeing these midcentury modern designs anytime is a fun thing to do on a California vacation, the arrival of Modernism Week is what makes Palm Springs one of the best places to be when visiting California in February. 

Modernism Week is a bit of a misnomer, as it’s actually 11 days long. During the festival, there are over 350 events, including Signature Home Tours, Architectural Bus Tours, film showcases, a vintage travel trailer exhibition, nightly parties, and much more.

15. San Simeon for Seal Breeding Season

February falls in the middle of elephant seal breeding season, which means it’s prime time to see these massive marvels come ashore. If you’re in California in February, take a drive over to San Simeon, where you’ll find the Piedras Blancas Rookery , which offers a viewing area to see the seals, as well as knowledgeable experts who can tell you more about them.

The Best Places to Visit in California in the Winter in 2022

California is best known for sunny weather and beautiful beaches, but if you don’t visit the mountains and the deserts in the winter months, you’re doing it wrong!

The Golden State is so much more than just a summer destination. As a California native and enthusiast, I’m here to tell you that these are some of the best things to see and places to visit during the winter! Grab a rental car and be ready for an adventure:

1. Death Valley

The hottest desert in the world is not the place to be in the middle of July, but it’s absolutely perfect for the winter months, when so much of the rest of the US is under a layer of snow. It’s the ideal time to go hiking in  the Golden Canyon , take in a stunning sunset at Zabriskie Point, marvel at the colors of Artists Palette, and if you’re lucky, even see a wildflower  bloom in the desert , which can happen from late February onward. Be sure to check out the Badwater Basin as well, a unique geological feature at the lowest point in the US. You can take a tour that covers several landscapes including the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Artist’s Drive, Badwater Basin, and more.

The stargazing is also incredible, but remember to bundle up, because the temperature swing in the desert from day to night can be extreme, particularly in the winter.

2. Ski in the Sierras

If you’re into skiing, you probably have heard of Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain. Both are world-class ski resorts with incredible powder, depending on the year. This year in particular has been incredibly good for snow!

If you’re not an alpine skier, the mountain areas also have snowshoeing and sometimes skating as well. They are both set in stunning locations, with lots to do nearby as well. Mammoth is close to the next item on this list, along with the Alabama Hills, and Tahoe is a huge area that spans all the way into Nevada, with plentiful snowmobiling and snowshoeing trails.

3. Hot Creek

Since we are talking about Mammoth, you’ve got to check out nearby Hot Creek! It’s a hot-spring river that runs through a mountain valley — it’s especially great when the weather is cold and the river is rimmed with snow. I can’t imagine a better way to wind down after a long day of skiing.

4. Yosemite

Yosemite turns into a winter wonderland when it snows! Many of the usual trails, like the Bridalveil Fall and Lower Yosemite Fall trails, are still as easily accessible, mainly because they’re flat; other trails, like the road to Glacier Point, turn into fantastic Nordic skiing or snowshoeing opportunities.

There’s also snowshoeing to Dewey Point from the Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area. There’s a free shuttle from the valley, and a snowshoe and ski rental place at the top. You can read more about this and the other  winter activities in Yosemite here.

5. Horsetail Fall

There’s also the phenomenon of Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall, or “the firefall” each February. Otherwise an under-the-radar waterfall, Horsetail lights up due to the angle of the sunset for a period of about two weeks at the end of the month. It can vary depending on the amount of water the fall produces and how cloudy it is, but if you hit it just right, it’s a photographer’s dream. It’s become incredibly popular, with hundreds of people showing up now to take pictures during peak days.

6. Alabama Hills

This area is famous for being a setting for old Western movies, as well as many others over the years. Since I’m not a big movie buff, I went because I wanted to see Mount Whitney covered in snow, perfectly framed by the Mobius Arch.

The winter is just the right time to head to see snow on the mountains and also enjoy the otherwise hot Alabama Hills. The stargazing out there is incredible, and there’s BLM (Bureau of Land Management, meaning public land) camping everywhere! There are several arches to hike to, including one that’s shaped like a heart. You can read more about the best things to see in the Alabama Hills here .

7. Slab City

This stop probably isn’t for everyone, but Slab City is a place where a community of real-life anarchists and outlaws have turned upcycled trash into art. Even if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve probably heard of Salvation Mountain, pictured above. I stopped by in May a few years ago and it was blazing hot, but in the winter months, it would be much more bearable to stay and explore all day.

Just make sure you keep your wits about you, because it’s an eerily fascinating place where I never really felt entirely safe, but not in danger either.

8. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua trees only grow in the high desert of California. These trees, which are actually agaves, are so named because they looked to Mormon settlers like the hands of Joshua reaching up to the heavens.

Like the rest of the California desert, Joshua Tree National Park can get incredibly hot in the summer, but it’s perfect in the winter months for camping out and hiking during the day. It’s a popular bouldering and rock climbing spot as well. Avoid the crowds by steering clear of holiday weekends.

9. Sequoia National Park

If you think seeing the biggest trees on Earth would be amazing at any time of year, just imagine them with snow! Though Sequoia National Park is not the only place in California that has these incredible trees, it’s where you are more likely to see them with snow.

Combine your trip with Yosemite and Kings Canyon and you’ll get the trifecta of some of the best national parks in the US!

10. Pacific Coast Highway

I would normally not recommend the Pacific Coast Highway in the winter months, because you’re much more likely to get marine fog, and the beach is usually better in the summer. That said, having grown up on the southern and central coast, I’m of the opinion that there is no bad time to be on the California coast.

The bonus of going in the winter months is that you will have it mostly to yourself, and reservations at campgrounds and hotels will be much easier to come by. Probably a lot cheaper too!

Just keep in mind that if California is going to have a rainy year, it’ll be mostly concentrated to the winter months (it’s rare in the summer). Camping in a tent could be less than ideal, but again, you’re likely to have much more solitude on an otherwise megapopular route. 11. The Lost Coast

Though I hate to play favorites, this spot on the coast about two hours south of the Oregon border is one of the parts of California that I love the most — and it gets hardly any tourism! The beaches are rugged and lovely, full of big boulders and waves, and there are Coastal Redwoods to walk through for days. I’ve gone in the winter and in the warmer months and love it in every season. Fog is common in this part of the state, regardless of time of year, though.

12. Lake Tahoe

Sure, you might know Lake Tahoe from the summertime photos of cobalt-blue water complementing the abundant greenery all around. Although it’s is more popular to visit in the summer months, there is plenty to do in Lake Tahoe in the winter. Go skiing, snowshoeing, or simply rent a cozy cabin for the weekend and enjoy the snowy scenes.

13. Pacific Grove

Known as “Butterfly Town,” Pacific Grove receives a huge migration of monarch butterflies each winter. Between November and February, you can see them take off in flight each morning — a stunning sight. For more information, check out the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History’s Monarch Sanctuary .

14. Año Nuevo State Park

There are tons of excellent state and national parks in California that make for great wintertime destinations, but this one stands out. Northern elephant seals gather on the local beaches of Año Nuevo State Park each winter between December and February. These incredible animals are a truly spectacular sight to see, and this is one of the best places in California to do so.

15. Napa Valley

Since summer and fall are the busiest seasons in Napa Valley, winter yields a more peaceful vibe that is great for a relaxing vacation. You’ll still be able to taste the best wine California has to offer, while also beating the crowds. Since it’s low season, you can get away with visiting the best spots in town without a reservation, so you can have a more spontaneous trip. Plus, the usually sunny Napa Valley adopts a mysterious foggy atmosphere in the winter that has its own unique charm.

Though it’s hard to narrow down a state that is bigger than most countries in terms of size, population, and economy, those are some of the best places to visit in California in the winter.

So if you can’t make it during the warmer months, just know that there truly is no bad time to visit. As long as you have a sense of adventure and love the outdoors, you can’t possibly be bored!

Encinitas (northern coastal sd county) right now is sunny and warm in the mornings and afternoons. There have been a lot of people at the beaches, but too cold to swim.

Good places to stay would be either Santa Barbera, Santa Monica (if you want to sighsee Los Angeles)or Laguna Beach

The reality is:

If the beach is calling out to you, consider Los Cabos, Mexico. This is on the west coast in Baja. Same temps as Palm Springs plus wonderful beaches. It's closer than you think -- less than 2 hours from L.A. US Airways has the shortest flight from Portland via Phoenix (1 hour layover) which takes a total of 5 hours, 35 minutes (including the layover). Tickets runs about $450,

Or, depart out of Boise, only 5 hours, 5 minutes on US Airways,

Just think...

Jet Skis, Parasailing, ATVs (Quads), REAL Mexican beer. great Snorkeling, etc.

I stayed "in town" when I was there -- which is a pretty small town. But most people stayed at the resorts outside of town. I spent some time at one called Dreams which was very nice. I don't have any idea how expensive it is. (Ok, I checked and it's over $500 per night. Now I know why I said that the meal I had there was the best lunch of my life). If you want warmth and relaxation, I would look at Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert or Palm Springs .

It might not be the ocean, but hanging at a nice pool, sipping on a cocktail in the middle of february does not sound to bad(plus PS has plenty of beautiful places to walk, dine and enjoy)

The Best Places to Visit in California in February

The Golden State may be associated with endless summers and sunshine on Christmas, but California's rich diversity means you'll have plenty of unique choices on the schedule for February trips. Between bundling up for a Valentine's Day in San Francisco or basking on the beach in San Diego County, take a lift up a Sierra slope, celebrate nature or keep an eye out for Pacific Ocean passers-by.

Ski Resorts

It's still ski season come February across California, and the best place to hit the slopes depends on what you're hoping to experience. Naturally, Lake Tahoe's cluster of ski resorts makes it a standard winter draw and the Sierra Nevada lure both cross-country and downhill skiers. The possibilities stretch nearly the length of the state, though. Imagine volcanic skiing near Mount Shasta or driving the short distance from L.A.'s palm trees to the snowy slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains. Rent ski gear or snowshoes at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Adventure Center for a challenging cross-country trek in the higher elevations of a wintertime desert.

Blossom Trail

The best time for viewing one of the California heartland's surest signs of spring generally begins toward the end of February. Before the summertime fruit stands on the roads of the San Joaquin Valley emerge, the trademark petals along the Blossom Trail pop out. Southeast of Fresno, the trail winds south of Clovis through the cities of Sanger and Reedley, as well as the farming towns of Minkler and Centerville. Take the road to Kings Canyon and steer down through Orange Cove for a longer route through fragrant citrus trees. Start at Simonian Farms on your drive through the white plum and apple blossoms, the pink petals of the apricot orchards and the red and pink blooms of peaches and nectarines.

Date Festival

It doesn't matter one bit if you've got a date on Valentine's Day in California because February brings more dates than you'll be able to handle. The National Date Festival each year in Indio celebrates the source of 95 percent of the nation's supply of the palm fruits in this Coachella Valley oasis. Toasting the century-old imported crop and the love of Saharan culture that both flourished here, you'll see camels and the annual crowning of Miss Scheherazade. Local growers even put some fair flair on their signature crop, adding even sweeter coatings to the dates and even stuffing them with chocolate candies.

Whale Watching on the Coast

No sooner have the gray whales of the Bering Sea finished their wintertime migration down the Pacific Coast to warmer waters than it's time to turn around and head back home. After giving birth in the lagoons of Baja California, the whales will stick close to the coastline with their newborns in tow on the return trip. Whale migration back to Alaska begins in February but can occur as late as April, so your best spot for whale watching can vary with this overlap. Whale day-tour companies from Orange County to Long Beach and San Francisco regularly post updates about current sightings. The cliffs of Big Sur offer spectacular viewing points along Pacific Coast Highway turnouts to watch the whales' journey.

Kauna'oa Beach, Big Island, Hawaii

With active volcanoes, verdant jungles, kaleidoscopic coral reefs, and a profusion of warm Pacific Ocean beaches, the 50th state is nothing short of paradise. While the archipelago’s eight major islands offer many an adventurous pursuit, the island of Hawaii contains one of the state’s most stunning (and public) white sandy shores—Kauna’oa Beach (also known as Mauna Kea). Set at the foot of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and stretching along the isle’s northwestern Kona Coast for more than half a mile, the gently sloping shore experiences calm waters nearly year-round. Laughingbird Caye National Park, Belize

If you’re looking to put your passport to use, Laughingbird Caye National Park, off the coast of Placencia Village in mainland Belize, welcomes visitors with its diverse marine life, coastal mangrove thickets, and soft sands. Part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System (the long sliver of island actually sits on a reef), snorkelers and scuba divers will find plenty to do here. In February, sea temps hover around 80°F, so you’ll stay toasty while searching for loggerhead turtles, hammerhead sharks, barracudas, and more. Black's Beach, La Jolla, California

Just beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines, Black’s Beach harbors some notoriously strong swells (and a clothing-optional crowd come summer). Hometown temperatures dropping towards subzero? Worry not, the best warm places to visit in February are closer than you might expect. And if you’re happy to travel, it’s a magical month to explore mo re long-haul destinations too. 

Even within the US land borders, there are plenty of warm places to visit. Nearby Mexico and the Caribbean also offer reliable hot weather, golden beaches, and extravagant cocktails to banish thoughts of winter. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer is peaking, from New Zealand to Cambodia . To tick off a true bucket list destination , visit Easter Island. Best warm beaches to visit in February

With chill winds blowing across much of the mainland US, thoughts turn to days spent lazing on golden beaches. Daydream no more. 

1. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao

• Average temperature: 81°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 9 hours

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are often lazily grouped as the ABC islands. Despite their shared Dutch influence, each has emerged distinct from the others in many ways. Except perhaps for their consistently flawless beaches.

February is peak Caribbean season with all three islands basking in blue skies and beach temperatures. The main party is found in Aruba, especially as it’s Carnival month. Head for Oranjestad and Palm Beach to join the parades and parties. 

Blessed with more sand than its rockier siblings, Curaçao is the largest island with the most beaches . Find dramatic cliffs, picture-perfect coves, and Caribbean blues at Grote Knip, Klein Knip, and Playa Lagun.

My top pick is Bonaire. The outlier of the trio, it is lesser-visited but has world-beating diving and a glowing reef only feet offshore. Watersports are a part of daily life here and the island’s 400-plus caves make it a spelunker’s utopia.

2. Raglan, New Zealand

• Average temperature: 66°F
• Average hours of daylight: 14 hours

Growing up a surfer, I had a photo of the famed wave known as Raglan on my wall for 15 years. Amazingly, from the moment I first visited, it lived up to my expectations. Warm and inviting yet dramatic and mind-blowing , it’s a landscape that could only exist in New Zealand. 

February is a great time to explore the coastline of this Waikato region on North Island. Daytime temperatures regularly sit in the mid-70s, water temperatures in the mid-60s, and the sun shines and shines. The primary surf break is at Manu Bay , where waves can run down the coast for a thigh-burning 330 yards. If you are a beginner head for the dramatic black sands of nearby Ngarunui Beach.

Surf sated, head into laidback Raglan, the archetypal surf town . Lively bars, great home-cooking restaurants, cool inns, and a healthily eccentric art scene are all just a two-hour drive from Auckland . 

3. Loreto, Mexico

• Average temperature: 64°F
• Average hours of daylight: 12 hours

Take a road trip down the Baja peninsula and you’ll spend a lot of time alone, staring at cactus fields as the miles tick by. A beacon of cool amid the arid landscape, Loreto is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos , or Magic Towns. 

Marked for its lovely colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage, its cobbled streets lead you into Mexico of old. The 17th-century Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, pottery stores, and deeply rooted locals can feel from another world. But among them, you’ll also find boutique hotels, delicious family-run restaurants , and a modern buzz.

Offshore is where Loreto really shines. The pristine islands of the Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto teem with nature. Deserted beaches fringe an ocean that in February is alive with whales drawn there to feed, mate and calve. 

4. Arabian Desert, Saudi Arabia

• Average temperature: 62°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 8 hours

A vast sea of red-hued sand spreads across most of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian Desert is home to extreme temperatures and towering dunes, Bedouin culture, and a diverse wildlife habitat. February is winter, when daytime temperatures hover in the mid-70s and conditions are more agreeable . 

A few hours southwest of Riyadh , Al Kharrarah National Park is a playground for adventure. Follow in the tracks of ancient Egyptians who would surf and shift cargo on sandboards and sleds. Local guides can take you deep into the desert to virgin dunes, where you’ll be the first to lay your line in the sand.

If you’re lucky, winter rainfall will transform the area into a fleeting oasis. Water surging down steep dunes creates a temporary waterfall and the Lake of Liquid Light , which is deep enough to swim in. For a time at least, it may just be the best beach in the world.

Best warm places to visit in the US in February

Happily, there are plenty of locations in the US that enjoy winter sun, with temperatures warm enough to make the most of outside.

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

• Average temperature: 69°F

Once the East Coast go-to for raucous spring breakers, Fort Lauderdale has grown up. Today it’s renowned for beaches and boating canals, luxury shopping, and fine dining. And with the weather in Florida in February pushing average high temperatures into the late 70s, it’s become a premium winter vacation destination .

With the sun shining, head straight for Florida’s 23 miles of golden sand beaches . Lay out under swaying palms and blue skies at Las Olas Beach, in the heart of the action. Behind you, Las Olas Boulevard reaches like an artery through the canals and on into the city.

Hop on a riverboat to cruise the canals while sipping Champagne and disembark amid the chic boutiques and shiny hotels flanking Las Olas Boulevard. To end your day gorge at the many sea-to-table restaurants, overflowing with fresh seafood and Floribbean flair .

6. O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

• Average temperature: 65°F

Tropical and temperate O‘ahu offers a blissfully warm February vacation. The natural Hawai‘in entry point from mainland US, its skies are clear and its seas sparkle. Average high temperatures don’t drop below 70, which means the beaches and hiking trails are primed and ready .  

Kick off a stay in the capital, Honolulu . Splicing the chaos of a metropolis with island culture in an awe-inspiring location, it’s at once hectic and laid back. O‘ahu really shines in the wilds, though. Sunrise has never looked better than from the highs of the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail , one of more than 200 crisscrossing the island.

Then of course, there are the beaches. Waikiki needs no introduction but it’s the infamous North Shore that steals the show. Home to some of the world’s best waves (for surfers and spectators alike), winter is when the big swells hit. Pull up a towel, sit back and enjoy the show. 

7. Tucson, Arizona

• Average temperature: 55°F

Okay, an average of 55 doesn’t scream warm weather. But with average highs of 69 and little to no rain, Tucson is something of a dream in February. Especially if you love to hike.

Arizona’s second city is engulfed in the enormity of nature. Pass its borders in any direction and you’ll soon find yourself in alien landscapes. Sabino Canyons are the quick and easy option for a scenic stroll. My pick, however, is an hour south amid the desolate grandeur of Elephant Head . 

A huge granite peak traversed by the well-worn East Ridge trail , its summit delivers eye-watering views over the Santa Rita Mountains to the east. Start from Chino Canyon for a challenging trek that takes in the ruins of Old Elephant Head Mill and the abandoned Quantrell Mine. At its peak, the bizarre but brilliant Elephant Shrine is framed by Baboquivari Peak in the distance. Magic.

If distance is no object, the world opens up in February with some extraordinary destinations at their finest. Here are three of my favorite and far-flung warm places to visit in February. 

8. Easter Island, Chile

• Average temperature: 75°F
• Average hours of daylight: 13 hours

Don’t mind a long-haul trip ? Deep in the heart of the South Pacific, Easter Island basks in balmy summer temperatures in February. It’s a lovely time to step out of the rat race and immerse yourself in one of the world’s most spellbinding islands.

Your first stop should be the moai statues , 887 giant rock sculptures better known as the Easter Island heads. Trek the Ara O Te Moai ancestral trail where you’ll find fallen heads and on the slopes of Rano Raraku volcano, the quarry they were mined from. Seeing them in place is made only more fascinating by the fact no one knows how the Rapanui people got them there.

For a unique experience, join a guided dive to see the submerged moai near the town of Hanga Roa. There’s excellent diving, snorkeling, and surfing around the coast, served by among others, the lovely white-sand beach at Anakena.  

9. Conil de la Frontera, Spain

• Average hours of daylight: 11 hours

In Andalucía, Spain’s far south, the beaches are wilder and the cities more historic. Cádiz , Europe’s oldest, is a window into 3,000 years of history laid open for exploration. Farther south still, the town of Conil tumbles down cliffs to the beach like a white wave breaking into the Atlantic.

It’s become my default European beach vacation because it’s a fabulous place to soak up the sun, even in winter. February temperatures aren’t scorching hot, but with typically bright sunny days it always feels warmer. 

Instead of sunbathing, get involved. Nearby El Palmar is a miles-long surf mecca with a thriving and friendly beachfront community. Surf schools and camps, buzzing bars with built-in skate ramps, and local ‘cervecerias’ serving 2€ cañas and outrageously good tapas. And there are few better ways than to finish a day with a sunset horseback ride through the surf.

10. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Yet to garner the attention and investment of other Southeast Asian metropolises like Bangkok and Hanoi , Cambodia’s capital is a rough diamond. In February it swelters under blue skies, yet rainfall and humidity are at their lowest .

Any visit must acknowledge the atrocities of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge. A trip to Choeung Ek , known as the Killing Fields, is informative and deeply moving. It’s my choice over the Tuol Sleng Museum, which is almost unbearable in its stark grimness. 

But Phnom Penh is so much more than this tragic history. Follow in the footsteps of royalty, war reporters, and Hollywood icons with a stay at the historic Raffles Hotel Le Royal . Dine on delicious Khmer cuisine (but trust me, skip the fried tarantula) at Romdeng restaurant . A non-profit, the waiters are all impoverished Cambodian youths getting training in hospitality. 

And don’t miss the mighty Mekong , my favorite river, alive with life of every kind. Southeast Asia’s great artery, extend your trip with a three-day cruise along it into Vietnam and wonderful Ho Chi Minh City .

Where is hot and cheap in February?

Mexico and many islands of the Caribbean are excellent choices for a hot, budget vacation from the US in February. Weather across Texas in February is pretty mild which allows visitors to explore the sights, walk around the cities and enjoy the state’s festivals without getting too chilly. Explore one or more of the national forests

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.

A cooler pattern to close out April in Southern California: showers, clouds and dropping temperatures

A cool, wet weather pattern is developing across Southern California, with a deep marine layer bringing clouds and light precipitation to the region early Monday, as well as a drop in temperatures that will persist through the week.

“We’re going to have well below normal temperatures over the next couple days,” said Ariel Cohen, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oxnard. “It will be pretty cool ... quite chilly to close out April.”

In general, the highs through at least Wednesday are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees below seasonal averages, Cohen said. Along the coast, temperatures will likely remain in the 50s; inland valleys will top out in the 60s; and in the mountains, highs could stay in the 40s.

This weather pattern will also bring some sporadic precipitation to the region, but Cohen said if an area gets rain — and he said many places won’t — totals for the week aren’t expected to surpass one-tenth of an inch.

“We’re not looking for any serious rain,” Cohen said. It will be a “patchy drizzle, on-and-off” through at least Wednesday, and maybe into Thursday, driven by that marine layer.

There will be a slight chance for showers Thursday through Saturday, offshoots from a stream of storms that will mostly take aim further east, the meteorologist said.

“We’ll be getting — at most — a couple light showers, but the real impacts will be over the Great Plains of the U.S.,” Cohen said. “Most areas [here] probably won’t be getting a whole lot of anything.”

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center has forecast that below average temperatures are likely to persist in Southern California through at least May 1, with a chance for slightly above-average precipitation. The long-range forecast for May doesn’t shows further atypical temperatures or rainfall — highs are forecast to creep back up and rain should become infrequent.
