Welcome to our 2 day Kangaroo Island In Style tour itinerary.

Day 1 – Island Life

Today, we’ll get a feel for Island Life – where things take time, drivers wave as they go by – or even stop for a chat.

Have a cuppa with some  home-made treats  before taking a walk down a country track through tall Eucalyptus trees where koalas snooze overhead or wake briefly for a feed. Listen for the sounds of the bush – brightly coloured honeyeaters and brilliant parrots, cicadas or perhaps just the sound of silence.

Travel through the Island’s most productive country to the north coast. Walk through the bush with your guide – through strangely shaped trees learning what makes that noise, whose tracks are those, and who left THAT little pile there? Look for small wallabies almost extinct on the mainland, a kangaroo found only on  Kangaroo Island  and a variety of other birds, plants and animals.

Break for lunch at a private bush camp and enjoy a delicious meal featuring King George whiting (local sea fish), fresh salads and fine South Australian wines.

At  Seal Bay Conservation  Park take a private tour with your guide among Australian sea-lions on a beautiful sandy beach – an experience similar to that of the Galapagos. Watch pups nursing or playing in the surf, see old bulls bearing the scars of territorial disputes and learn about their unique breeding biology.

Day 2 – Flinders Chase Focus

Begin the day travelling through some of the fire-affected landscapes of Kangaroo Island, which are recovering quickly following generous winter rains. 

Learn about fire ecology and how nature deals with fire. Some of our native flora species only flower following fire!

Travel into  Flinders Chase National Park  and explore the massive shapes of  Remarkable Rocks , a natural sculpture perched impossibly on top a granite dome plunging into the ocean

Break for an elegant picnic lunch in the bush, or if weather permits, on a spectacular clifftop. Lunch features marinated poached chicken, fresh salads, cheeses accompanied by local wine, beer, soft drinks and spring water.

Evidence of the power of the Southern Ocean swell continues at  Admirals Arch  – a coastal grotto which provides a haul out for a large colony of Long-nosed fur seals which swim effortlessly through crashing waves.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

How do I get to Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is located 14 kilometres (9 miles) off the  South Australian  coast. To get there, you'll need to take the ferry from Cape Jervis or fly from Adelaide.

You can fly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and several other cities in Australia (subject to seasonal demand), or catch a ferry to Penneshaw from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The ferry takes around 45 minutes.

Kangaroo Island is a casual place so you can leave your dressy clothes at home. Layered, breathable clothing is key, as while it can be chilly when you set off in the morning, it can warm up substantially throughout the day. You'll also need a pair of comfy walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat (even in winter). A raincoat or poncho is better than an umbrella as some areas can be very windy.

What do I wear on Kangaroo Island?

Most activities on Kangaroo Island involve the great outdoors, so there's no need to dress up. In the evening, smart casual is the typical dress code for the island's restaurants — think t-shirt and jeans. Evenings can be chilly, even during the summer months, so ensure you bring a couple of warm layers.

What is the internet access like on Kangaroo Island?

Telstra customers can get mobile data coverage in major tourist areas and along most of the island's sealed roads. There's limited signal available in more remote areas of the island, particularly when you're travelling off-road.

Customers with other network providers may have little or no coverage throughout the island, but most hotels and resorts offer wi-fi. Kangaroo Island ferries also offer free wi-fi.

Can I use my mobile phone on Kangaroo Island?

Telstra customers usually have the best coverage on Kangaroo Island, particularly in more populated areas. If you're with another network provider you may have less or no coverage at all, however, most hotels offer free wi-fi so you can stay connected.

Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the 2020 bushfires?

The 2020 bushfires were the biggest in the island's history. The fires burnt almost half of the island and had a devastating impact on the people, homes, businesses, wildlife, nature and tourism.

As catastrophic as the fires were, Kangaroo Island and other bushfire-affected regions in South Australia are bouncing back. Nature is flourishing again and wildlife has returned to native habitats. Amazingly, some species that were thought to have been wiped out have been spotted, including the Kangaroo Island Little Pygmy Possum.

Tourism has suffered a great deal since the bushfires, but as the island continues to recover, it's more important than ever.

Join us on an informative, entertaining night walking tour, searching for the little penguins and other wildlife. We are passionate about the little penguins and have lots to share with you. We cannot guarantee we will find the little penguins being wildlife, however we can guarantee you’ll enjoy the tour with our excellent guides. Penguin-friendly torches

At the Penneshaw Penguin Centre we’ll set everyone up with a penguin-friendly torch. How is this different to a normal torch?

These torches do not disrupt an animal’s night vision or your own. This way we can watch the penguins, wallabies, possums and other animals behave naturally. Nocturnal animals and other animals have very strong senses compared to us so creating as little stress to them is important to being able to view them. This means using red-light torches, being quite, moving slowly and not making sudden movements.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife and Where to See them

Land Animals 

Kangaroos 

Kangaroo Island, aptly named for its abundant kangaroo population, is a haven for a variety of fascinating land animals. Roaming the island's grasslands, the Kangaroo Island kangaroo – a subspecies of the western grey kangaroo – delights visitors at every turn. With a population 14 times that of humans on the island, you’ll most likely spot one without even trying. As you journey further into the island, the coastal bushland reveals the tammar wallaby, a smaller kangaroo specie that also inhabits Kangaroo Island. The best spots to sight these iconic Australian animals in their natural habitat are at Stokes Bay or along scenic trails such as the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail in Penneshaw or the Wallaby Run dirt track.

Writer’s tip: The best time for spotting Kangaroos is often at dawn or dusk and you can find them roaming in your backyard when you book a stay at Ecopia Retreat , Sea Dragon or around Vivonne Bay’s campsites and jetty. 

Koalas 

Despite the name, Kangaroo Island is one of the best places to see koalas in the wild in Australia. Cruising around the island, you need only to turn your eyes to the eucalyptus treetops to spot koalas lazily lounging in the canopies. For a truly immersive and up-close encounter, head to  Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park or join the guided koala walk at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Echidnas 

From furry friends to the spiky kind, amidst the island's bushland cast your eyes to the ground and you might just find a short-beaked echidna. Resembling a cross between a porcupine and an anteater, these curious creatures are spotted practically anywhere on the island. The best time to see echidnas is during mating season in October, when a female leads a string of males in what’s known as the ‘echidna train’. Birds

The best place to view them is on the eastern reaches of the Island in Penneshaw at Baudin Conservation Park , and American River – chances are you’ll probably hear them before you see them! 

Marine Creatures

Dolphins 

Kangaroo Island's coastal waters are teeming with marine life, offering unique opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts to experience the wonders of the ocean. Cruise along the rugged coastline and be greeted by pods of playful bottle-nosed dolphins, known for showing off their acrobatic displays, surfing capabilities and curious nature. Often dancing in the waves behind boats, you’re likely to spot them following you on the ferry over to Kangaroo Island, as a resident pod cruises back and forth around Penneshaw. Other pods patrol waters dotted around the island in Vivonne Bay or in calm waters of Emu Bay , as pods often visit shallow waters between resting and feeding. 

Seals 

Kangaroo Island is also home to a colony of endangered Australian sea lions, often found lounging at  Seal Bay Conservation Park . One of the world’s rarest marine creatures, seals are affectionately known as the puppy dogs of the sea and are frequently seen in the waters surrounding Kangaroo Island. With a population of 800 sea-lions, Seal Bay Conservation Park acts as a sanctuary and offers the perfect opportunity for visitors to observe playful pups and lively juveniles basking along the picturesque white sand dunes and coves. Join a guided tour and immerse yourself in their world, learning about their diverse coastal habitat. Whales

One of the rarer wildlife to spot on Kangaroo Island, you’ll often hear penguins more than you can see them in places like Emu Bay. Where to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck

American travelers going abroad this summer will find their money buys more in some unexpected countries, including Japan and Australia.

It’s the backpacker’s call to India, the sunseeker’s attraction to Mexico, and the digital nomad’s drive to get to Thailand: Go where the dollar buys more.

The evergreen budget travel strategy is getting a boost this summer: The dollar has surged against a number of foreign currencies, including the Japanese yen, thanks to high interest rates offered by the Federal Reserve — attracting foreign investment, which bolsters the dollar.

“A destination’s weaker currency spells greater value for U.S. tourists,” said Erina Pindar, the chief operating officer and managing partner at SmartFlyer , a global travel agency based in New York City.

“This economic advantage could make far-flung bucket list destinations in Asia, such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, or in South America, like Peru, Argentina and Chile, more accessible than ever before,” she added.

Distant destinations are usually more expensive to fly to, which, along with the physical toll of jet lag, helps make the case for the country’s North American neighbors, Canada and Mexico , where the exchange rates have long favored the dollar’s buying power.

But this year there are some new contenders with attractive exchange rates to consider, including the following destinations.

Currently, the U.S. dollar is worth about 1.50 Australian dollars, up about 16 percent over the last three years.

The hurdle, of course, is the long flight, which can easily run over $1,000 round trip. But the travel search engine Kayak lists some attractive summer round-trip fares between the West Coast and Sydney starting at $770, with the best availability in August.

Getting around Australia by air isn’t cheap either, especially since the recent collapse of the low-cost carrier Bonza. Jetstar offers lower fares, including, recently, $50 one-way tickets between Melbourne and Adelaide.

Camper vans can be an affordable way to take an Australian road trip, with companies like Jucy , Britz and Apollo offering vehicles that include beds and cooking facilities. Jucy recently priced a two-person van rented for a week in July at about $53 a night.

The Northern Hemisphere summer is Australia’s winter. If you’re planning a ski vacation in the Australian Alps, Tourism Australia suggests avoiding mid-July when schools are on break and many families head to the slopes.

Australia does not have a culture of tipping, potentially saving travelers 20 percent on restaurant meals, according to Craig Bradbery, the chief operating officer of Baillie Lodges, which includes the newly rebuilt Southern Ocean Lodge , a luxury property on Kangaroo Island.

Bali, Indonesia

Many destinations in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, offer compelling exchange rates. In Indonesia, the rupiah is at a four-year low against the dollar.

“I would send clients to Bali, Indonesia,” said Rob Huie, the owner of Luxury Travel Services by Rob , based in Millsboro, Del., noting that the cost of living is low on the island. “The caveat is a higher upfront cost to fly there, but once you’re there you are able to stay at three- and four-star hotels at very affordable rates, have meals for $10 to $25 per day and massages for $10 to $30.”

Travelers with Marriott loyalty points can cash them in at the Four Points by Sheraton Bali, Kuta (rooms from $57 a night). IGH Reward members can spend or earn points at Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach (from $138).

Tripadvisor’s list of the top budget hotels in the central highlands around Ubud includes options under $100.

Bali is a good place to look for a vacation rental, according to the home rental platform HomeToGo . Its data shows the median per-night price for a rental property on Bali this summer is $86, compared to the median price of a rental in the United States at $388.

“Despite the strength of the U.S. dollar on a global scale, prices across the states continue to rise, prompting travelers to look to international destinations where their dollar can stretch further,” said Eleanor Moody, a travel expert at HomeToGo, who added that searches for rentals in Indonesia have more than doubled in the past year.

South America — including Argentina where inflation has spiraled, and Peru where the sol has softened against the dollar — is another place to look for value.

“Stop going to Europe,” said Cecile Blot, the owner of the travel agency Boundless Travels in Washington, D.C., praising “destination dupes” in South America. “Many of the countries on the southern continent offer the entire package — history, culture, nature, culinary delights, world-class accommodation — at a fraction of the price.”

One of these is Colombia , where the dollar recently equaled about 3,935 pesos, a gain of roughly 20 percent over the past five years.

“Colombia has something for everyone,” said Stefanie Pichonnat, the owner of AAV Travel , based in Terre Haute, Ind., citing Cartagena on the Caribbean as a budget-friendly substitute for a European capital, and coastal Tayrona National Natural Park as a cheaper alternative to Costa Rica.

“Coffee aficionados can spend days touring the coffee fincas, passionate hikers can challenge themselves with a trek to the páramo desert and bird watchers will find an abundance of options to explore,” she added.

Air service is frequent and affordable. A recent search for round-trip fares from the New York area turned up summer departures starting from about $290 to the capital of Bogotá and $320 to coastal Cartagena.

From Bogotá, visitors can reach Chingaza National Natural Park in the eastern Andes or spend a few days in the laid-back colonial city of Villa de Leyva . But Colombia’s mountainous terrain and perilous roads often require travelers to fly domestically to see other areas.

Among tour operators that do the planning for you, Responsible Travel , based in England, offers a customizable 12-day trip to Colombia that visits Bogotá, Medellín and the central coffee country, including the lush Cocora Valley with its nearly 200-foot-tall wax palm trees (from $2,990 a person).

The U.S. dollar is currently worth about 156 Japanese yen, a gain of more than 11 percent over the past year.

Demand for Japan was already booming when the economic picture improved. BWH Hotels , which includes Best Western Hotels, said occupancy and rates have grown steadily for the past two years because of demand and a shortage of employees, especially in popular destinations like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido.

But with careful planning, Americans can still exploit the exchange rate. IHG Hotels & Resorts , which operates hotel brands in the country from the design-focused Voco to the high-end InterContinental, suggested traveling by early July for the best rates (an overnight at the Voco Osaka Central starts at $135).

The Japanese-owned Hoshino Resorts tend to be upscale, but their OMO line offers more entry-level accommodations, from capsule hotels to full-service locations. The OMO5 Kyoto Gion , for example, offers rooms that sleep up to six people and include kitchens, starting at 24,000 yen, or about $153. Staff guides offer free tours to temples in the area.

While many temples, parks and shrines are free, travelers in the capital can get the Tokyo Museum Grutto Pass for 2,500 yen (about $16) that includes admission to more than 100 museums and attractions around town.

Among its tips for budget travelers, the tourism office of Japan recommends making lunch your big meal as many restaurants offer midday specials.

There are a number of cost-conscious ways to get around Japan, including trains (a Japan Rail Pass starts at 50,000 yen, or about $320, for seven days), low-cost airlines like Peach and Zipair and overnight buses .

Or consider walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route that connects sacred shrines in the Kii Mountains. Walk Japan has a self-guided seven-day trip, including accommodations and most meals, starting at 224,000 yen.
