Mogwai announce winter UK tour dates

Scottish post-rock heroes Mogwai are hitting the road in the UK before the end of the year

Mogwai

Mogwai have announced UK shows for winter '22/23.

The Glasgow post-rock quartet will sign off their 2022 with four Scottish shows, including two nights at the Barrowland Ballroom in their hometown, then kick off their 2023 with shows in England and Wales in February.

Stuart Braithwaite's band will play:

2022 Dec 20: Music Hall, Aberdeen Dec 21: Usher Hall, Edinburgh Dec 22: Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow Dec 23: Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow

2023 Feb 10: Albert Hall, Manchester Feb 11: O2 Academy, Leeds Feb 12: Sage, Gateshead Feb 14: Rock City, Nottingham Feb 15: The Forum, Bath Feb 16: Great Hall, Cardiff Feb 17: Brighton Dome, Brighton Feb 18: Corn Exchange, Cambridge Feb 19: O2 Institute, Birmingham Band leader Braithwaite is to publish a memoir in September. Spaceships over Glasgow: Mogwai and Misspent Youth is due on September 1 via White Rabbit Publishing, and will tell the story of Braithwaite’s childhood through to his career fronting Mogwai.

The book is billed as "a love song to live rock and roll; to the passionate abandon we've all felt in the crowd (and some of us, if lucky enough, from the stage) at a truly incendiary gig. It is also the story of a life lived on the edge; of the high-times and hazardous pit-stops of international touring with a band of misfits and miscreants." Lee Brackstone of White Rabbit says: “From his early years in thrall to the giants of alternative music like MBV, JAMC and Sonic Youth to improbable sonic misadventures on tour with one of the greatest psychedelic bands of the present day, Mogwai, Stuart Braithwaite’s memoir is a funny and righteous celebration of a life lived on the road and in the studio, dedicated to the pursuit of aural (and occasionally) psychic enlightenment and obliteration.”

The book can be pre-ordered now .

Mogwai is a post-rock band founded in Glasglow, UK in 1995. Their namesake comes from the creatures in the film “Gremlins.”

The original trio Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchinson, and Martin Bulloch joined forces in 1991 and began putting out music a few years later. Their single “Tuner”/”Lower” caught the attention of the public in 1996, along with the song “Summer,” which earned a mention in the British publication, New Music Express (NME).

Mogwai’s debut album “Mogwai Young Team” was released in 1997 with the joint efforts of additional members: guitarist John Cummings and drummer Brendan O’Hare. Their work hit #75 on the UK Albums Chart. Musical influences for Mogwai include The Cure, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine and post-rock band Tortoise. Their music is characterized by extended instrumental guitar solos in post-rock style.

Mogwai’s sophomore album “Come On Die Young” came out in 1998 and upped the band’s popularity to #29 on the UK charts. The band brought on Barry Burns as a permanent member and featured Scottish violinist Luke Sutherland. At the turn of the century, Mogwai released their highest grossing album “Rock Action” which also became the name of their record label. The album featured guest vocalists and experimented with electronic elements while simultaneously staying true to their signature lengthy instrumental pieces (one song “My Father the King” is twenty minutes long!).

“Happy Songs for Happy People” was Mogwai’s first album to break into U.S. territory charting at #13 on the Billboard Indie Albums in 2003. Mogwai broke into the film industry in 2006 by providing the soundtrack to the movie “Zidane: A 20th Century Portrait.” Mogwai’s music is distributed through multiple international labels: firstly through Glasgow label Chemikal Underground, American labels Matador and Sub Pop, UK’s Play It Again Sam, and their own Rock Action Records.

Live reviews

I have had the good fortune to see Mogwai a number of times in a bunch of different places. I saw them at coachella 2004, I saw them once on a boat in Sydney Harbour. SF, Boston, LA, Seattle and NYC. The show on Monday night was in all seriousness one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life. Part of that is likely attributable to the sound at the opera house, but that is not the whole story. As a band they were just astoundingly tight. When you have a wall of sound coming at you that is likely louder than a 747 taking off and you can still hear an intrigue guitar line in the middle of it you know you are seeing something special. For a band that has 20 years of tracks to pull from they clearly took the time to put together a great setlist. Not only was every song amazing but they flowed perfectly. And they played christmas steps one of my favourite tracks. Hearing christmas steps in the opera house at mind numbing volume will be one of the highlights of any show I've ever seen.

If you have not seen them on this tour or even before. I assure you that you will not be disappointed, they are at the height of their powers and one of the best live bands in the world. It is not to be missed.

Mogwai, the Scottish post rock band have gained cult-like icon status in their 20 year career. Their experimental, largely instrumental based sound has inspired a number of contemporaries and has seen their fan base explode in numbers.

They were billed as lake stage headliners at the 2014 Latitude Festival and saw revellers from across the site flock to their feet to view the weird and wonderful stage show. The band steps out modestly and taking to their instruments there is an electric atmosphere in the festival field. They begin with a deafening version of 'Heard About You Last Night' with heavy bass tones that makes the ground beneath your feet shake and your hairs stand up on edge.

The group hand picks music from almost all of their eight albums and delight fans with huge renditions of 'How to Be a Werewolf' and 'Mexican Grand Prix' which are both accompanied with a mind bending light show. The music, the atmosphere, the stage and the light come together for a cathartic finale of 'Batcat' and leave the spectators talking about this festival highlight all weekend.

It is fair to accuse Mogwai of setting the mood for their show; slow, melodic guitar play highlighted by forays into the heavier, more metallic side of music.

Their songwriting is top notch, with tracks like "Cody" that could break your heart with its tender melody. However, most folks go for the wall of sound that this band travels with from Glasgow. Check out "The Precipice" or "Rats of the Capital" for evidence... but even if you do, this will not prepare you for this band in person.

They play with passion and diligence... they also manage to f*ck it up on the regular. I've seen folks cover their ears cause it got too heavy, definitely proof that you're listening to the right band of Scots.

They usually play intimate venues, but can more than hold their own at any festival; a great band to take in live, if you ask me.

Have seen Mogwai approx 10 times. This latest show (Toronto Jan 2017) was a screening of Atomic with a live performance of the film score.

Mogwai, as always, sounded fantastic, and delivered a strong performance of a powerful soundtrack, with some embellishments particularly at finale.

The film, on the other hand, is amateurish and disappointing. It was a visual distraction from a beautiful musical soundscape and was very detrimental to the overall experience. Some might find it depressing and/or biased as well, depending on your level of awareness regarding the history of nuclear science, power, weaponization, and resulting consequences.

In summary, if Mogwai are playing their studio/concert material, amazing act - definitely worth seeing! I'd skip the Atomic screenings tour though, and wait for a real concert.

I traveled from Brighton to Edinburgh just for this gig so I was really looking forward to it but also a little nervous as I had never seen them live before and didn't want to be disappointed, I needn't have worried! I thought I had been to my best gig of the year when I went to see Thee Oh Sees in July but with no disrespect intended, I was wrong. I knew tracks like remurdered, rano piano, Mogwai fear Satan and Like Herod but hearing them live was a whole new experience. They absolutely nailed every single track and the crowd loved it all. Mogwai's music is the sonic equivalent to being hit in the head with a large axe. If you do not like very, VERY loud music this might not be the band for you but for everyone else GO SEE THEM!

Slow Burning through to glorious finale

Blighted by some poor sound- there was appalling resonance from the bass- was a slow start but as they moved through the gears and the gig progressed exploded into a maelstrom of aural assault culminating in a wonderful coruscating “My Father My King” encore. Highlights along the way were “ Old Poisons” “Remurdered” and a sublime “Mogwai fear Satan”. I saw this gig with a newbie and he was blown away. Good to see Martin back on drums for the encore though I’ve really enjoyed the energy Cat has bought to the band. Any chance of a dual drum approach in the future a la Radiohead??

The location was great, though a bit difficult to reach with public transportation, especially the way home after the event was a bit of a hassle.

The support act (didn't bother to recall/look up their name) was bad. Felt like a one trick pony, playing basically the same song about 15(?) times.

Mogwai themselves had great energy, but the sound sucked. It's sad to see them furiously work their guitars but only get to hear some fuzzy (not in a good way), indistinguishable mash. Liking the melodic intricacy in their studio tracks this was disappointing.

I've been a fan of Mogwai for 20 years and saw them for the first time at this concert, they were,as expected awesome and me and my wife thourghly enjoyed it. Great set list and light show! Top class by The Young Team. Also they were the loudest band I have EVER seen. Would go again immediately!!!

Pezza67’s profile image

Absolutely profound and timely show- poignant in its venue, 6th & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, DC, terrifying in light of the US's strange political week. The show delivered chills and truly breathless moments with Mogwai's epic and important score. Wow! A lifetime experience.

lainey-cohen’s profile image

Easily the best and the loudest concert I have ever been to! The amount of noise these five people make on the stage is unreal, also the venue seemed like a perfect choice - a brick wall setting, not too large but still plenty of room to enjoy! Would love to see them again sometime

mogwai uk tour 2022

Mogwai – Barrowland Glasgow 23 rd December 2022

A wet night in the city as Mogwai prepare for their 2 nd night in the famous venue. As the crowd flock to the venue the queue outside forms as the fans enter. The excitement is building and creating an amazing atmosphere.

There were no frills to the stage set up with the band preparing to let this music talk to the fans than an explosion of light. Instead, we have a show filled with amazing soundscapes that capture the imagination of the audience. The fans eager and waiting for the band as they take to the stage under the cover of blue lights, intrigue positioned in select places to capture the band members silhouettes. The band opened with the excellent Boltfor that really captured the fans attention from the off with the epic song. As the opening chords of How to be a Werewolf sounded from the Hardcore Will Never Die, But You will Album, the crowd were going to be in for a real treat tonight and early Christmas present.

Stuart Braithwaite and the boys were on top form as you manage to catch a look at the band through the occasional flash that lights the stage up for a second or two. The band playing with passion the songs and music that builds on the atmosphere within the venue as the band play Hunted by a Freak and Don’t Believe the Fife, they are mixing the songs well to deliver a power filled set. With it being close to Christmas it was time to pull a suitable Christmas song out of the bag in the way of Christmas Steps a 11-minute instrumental that had the Barrowland crowd captured with the enthusiastic performance of the track. The band were on a roll as they brought an epic performance to the venue it was just wonderful to see the passion and the energy of the fans come together through the amazing music from the band. The band known for its extreme loudness didn’t disappoint as the volume levels were turned up to the max as rattled the old venue’s structure.

The band played a good range of their back catalogue including Drive The Nail, Party in the Dark and the epic Remurdered before delighting the audience to Ratts of the Capital before brining their set to a close with the impressive Like Herod before the band left the stage. Going off to a rapturous applause we are sure the band will return for an encore on the last night of this tour.

The band returned after a show break and opened the encores with the Ritchie Sacramento from As The Love Continues album delighting the fans from the front to the back of the venue. This is a song that delivers the power and passion of the band and has becoming a real fan favourite and if tonight is anything to go with you can see why it would be. As the band moved into the final song of the show My Father, My King was just the perfect way to close a remarkable show by Stuart Braithwaite and Mogwai. Tonight, was special, it had everything from the festive spirit to the atmospheric ambiance of the historic venue and the powerful energy that emerges from the band to they audience. This was a beautiful night filled by the soundscapes of Mogwai to close their tour in the famous venue. If you get a chance to see the band, go to the show with your mind wide open and let the power and the energy pf the band’s music capture your vision and emotions.
