Best Time to Visit Japan

Japan is an ideal tourist destination around the year. Each season brings forth a glorious beauty to the land that inspires divine poetry in the human mind.

Summer in Japan

During the summer months of June through August, you can visit Hokkaido City and the Japanese mountain ranges where the weather is pleasant. It is the perfect time to go hiking or explore one of the major cities of Japan, try the local cuisine, and relish the soft breeze with the sun shining above. Other places in Japan can be hot during summer, so it is not ideal to plan your Japan tours at this time.

Autumn in Japan

Autumn arrives in Japan with flair in the month of September, lasting till November. This is a perfect time to plan Japan tourism packages when the changing color of the leaves adds vibrancy against the natural highlights that make the scenery of Japan so appealing. This is one of the two peak seasons when most people love to plan their Japan trips in order to witness the attractions with the weather and atmosphere in their favor.

Winter in Japan

Winter in Japan can be quite chilly, especially near the hills. However, the frequent snowfalls are delightful. You can partake in activities in the snow or join the locals in their festivals, which inadvertently makes the atmosphere feel much warmer with friendliness. If you don’t like chilly weather then it is not ideal to visit at this time or during monsoon, which only lasts from May-end to mid-June.

Spring in Japan

Spring is another season in Japan that instantly brightens up your mood. The light breeze coupled with the warm glow of the sun is enticing in itself. When paired with the beautiful cherry blossom raining around the countryside, the delight doubles itself. You can even take part in the cherry blossom festival or have a picnic in the gardens of Japan at this time.

Therefore, the best time to visit Japan for the perfect weather and indulge in local festivals while admiring the scenic views is in autumn or spring when nature takes an interesting recourse. Most people choose their Japan holiday packages at this time, so you can expect the region to be crowded. If you wish to avoid the constant swarm of tourists, you can book your Japan trip packages for winter when the cities are still beautiful and covered in snow. You can also book Japan tour packages for summer, although you need to stay in Hokkaido or the Alps in order to avoid the extreme heat.

How to Reach Japan

As a country that is basically an island surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, how to reach Japan becomes a real challenge, especially from India. The two most popular means of travel for your Japan holiday packages are by air or by seaway.

Only direct flights leave from India to Japan from Delhi airport. Of course, there are connecting flights available from places such as Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc. As a country, Japan is ready to welcome you at several of its international airports. Most flights headed to Japan arrive at Haneda airport located in Tokyo city while others may take you straight to your destination or at least closer while landing at Narita airport, Osaka international airport, or Kansai airport.

Being connected to the Pacific Ocean allows Japan to welcome travelers via ships or cruises. However, there are no direct cruises available from India to Japan, although if you are so inclined, you can take a cruise or a flight to Singapore or China and book a cruise from there to Japan. It can be a little more expensive as well as a much longer journey than a flight; however, the luxuries aboard the cruisers keep your entertainment pampered, preparing you for your Japan holidays.

When considering how to reach Japan, take into account the duration of travel for each mode of transportation. While flights can take anywhere between 5 to 8 hours to reach Japan from India, ships and cruises can take days. Ideally, it is best to take a flight as it costs less and you don't end up losing a lot of your Japan holiday time in travel alone.

If you are planning to book Japan packages from anywhere outside the United States of America, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, you will require a visa for your Japan tours. Here is the Japan visa process for your next Japan tour as given below:

  • Download the visa application from the website of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and fill out all the details, do not leave anything blank. If certain points do not apply to you, put down ‘Not Applicable or NA’
  • Make sure you have an updated passport that is valid for at least the next six months and has two or more blank pages available for the entry and exit stamps
  • You must have a recent passport-size photograph with a white background where your entire face is visible. You must also write down your Date of Birth at the back of the photograph
  • Have your flight information ready even if you have not yet made the reservation. You must be able to provide the dates of your arrival and departure
  • You have to provide your bank statement to prove that you can sustain your Japan tour with ease. If you have a guarantor or an invitation from a resident of Japan, you can also provide that along with the letter demonstrating that you will be taken care of in case of emergencies
  • You must also furnish any civil certificates such as your identity, marriage certificates, birth certificate, etc.

Applying for a Japanese visa also requires a travel itinerary. If you book the Japan tour package from SOTC, you will have your itinerary available which is required for your visa application. If you are still uncertain about your travel plans on slide bookings, you can refer to the samples available on the website of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and get an idea of the details that you need to provide.

THINGS TO DO

Places to visit, japan tour packages from india.

Japan is glorious all year round and there is no one best time to visit Japan. The spring months between March and May blanket the country’s sidewalks and parks in pretty pink cherry blossoms. The blooming of the trees seeps its way into the lifestyle of the Japanese, and food and desserts inspired by the flower fill the streets.

Hanami, or cherry blossom viewing is a nationwide custom in which people eat, drink and make merry under the blossoming trees. The weather is cool and comfortable, making it the ideal time to explore the cities.

The months between June and September are humid in Japan and it is advisable to explore the places in the northern region instead of limiting oneself to the bustling, sweltering cities. Treks on Mount Fuji are popular during these hot days. Moreover, trips to Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of the country, are also well loved because of its pristine natural beauty and sprawling urban areas like Sapporo and Hakodate.

If you are in Japan during the summer, you cannot miss out on the Japanese culture of sipping chilled beer along with the season’s delicacies in the country’s many rooftop bars.

Summer blends into Autumn in Japan and the vibrant trees give way to orange leaves. The temperature drops down, making outdoor exploration comfortable once again. November and December are the months for a host of festivals that are celebrated with a lot of pomp. The Japan Grand Prix is an annual event that draws a lot of racing enthusiasts.

Fall is also when the Japanese people enjoy tsukimi , or moon viewing, and taking part in this custom is sure to be etched in your heart for a long time. Japan loves cosplay and attending a Halloween party in the country promises to be the best you will ever attend!

Japanese winters are cold, with temperatures going as low as 5 degrees Celsius in Tokyo. However, armed with thick jackets, gloves and a few heating pads, trips to Japan during these cold months will be straight out of a fairytale. The snowy scenery decorated with glittering lights to usher in the new year and year end festivities that fill the country are fun and striking.

Hot spring baths with uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape and winter sports on the mountains of the nation enjoy a good degree of popularity, and are the perfect way to unwind

Japan is a country filled with unique, mesmerizing natural occurrences. The wedded rocks of Ise in Mie, for instance, are perhaps the most unusual sights one will ever see. As the name suggests, two rocks, fondly named Izanagi and Izanami, the husband and the wife respectively, are “married” and bound by a traditional rope made of rice stalks that weighs almost a ton.

The sun rises precisely between the two rocks and with Mount Fuji in the background, the sight is ethereal. The place is popular among couples and photographers alike.

Tottori Sand Dunes in Western Japan are another place of stunning natural beauty that one must explore in Japan. The seemingly endless expanse of sand with well defined patterns made by the force of the wind early in the morning looks great in reality and in photographs.

Come autumn, the desert starts getting bordered by fields of purple scallion flowers, and the contrast between the vivid blooms and the sandy dunes is spectacular.

In winters, the sand gets coated with a layer of snow, adding a whole new level of beauty to Tottori. Umanose, a hill in the center of the sandy desert, offers views of the Sea of Japan from a little elevation and the sight is well worth seeing.

The streets, islands and hills of the country are filled with so much beauty that one only needs to open their eyes to see something stunning. From simple pretty trees in the busy cities to blue-green bays with sandy shores, to snow capped mountains and fields of flowers, no Japan holiday tour is complete without connecting with the nation’s pristine natural beauty.

Japan is also a country with an incredibly rich history, and the well preserved presence of all the periods the nation has seen is waiting to be explored. With more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than in any other country, some holiday packages are dedicated only to visiting these famous landmarks.

Japan has many imperial palaces, but three in particular stand out and are considered to be the Three Greats. Osaka Castle, with its surrounding luxurious park is the most iconic of them, and it stands as a symbol of the city today.

The palace has a vast museum with artefacts belonging to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, an important national figure and the founder of the castle. The premise also features a viewing platform that offers sweeping views of the entire city of Osaka.

One of Japanese history’s most tragic chapters is the bombing of Hiroshima in August, 1945. The Hiroshima Peace Park stands in tranquility today to remind people of the value of peace.

The premises hold the A-Bomb Dome, which is the remnant of the building that survived the force of the attack despite being in the hypocenter, a museum dedicated to the history and aftermath of the blast and a Cenotaph commemorating the victims who lost their lives due to the attack.

The area has been developed as a beautiful garden bordered by two rivers. While the story behind the park is sombre, visiting it is oddly uplifting.

Founded in the year 794, Kyoto is considered to be the cultural capital of Japan and the best place to witness the charms of the traditions of the nation. With a number of shrines, including the iconic Fushimi Inari, and a host of museums, including the Kyoto International Manga Museum, days are fascinating in Kyoto. The geisha district of Gion also draws tourists.

The bustling capital city of Tokyo has a skyline dotted with incredible skyscrapers. The parks of the city are well maintained and beautiful and Tokyo holds a host of iconic places within its boundaries. The Shibuya Scramble Crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, is overwhelming to witness and should not be missed. Close to the crossing in the district of Shibuya itself stands the bronze statue of Hachiko, the dog who waited for his human till his last breath.

Recognised for its stunning night view, Sapporo in Hokkaido is an unmissable addition to Japan tour packages. Climb the Mount Moiwa ropeway after the sun sets and witness the city sparkle brightly underneath you. The Hokkaido Jingu park has over 1400 cherry trees and it is absolutely magnificent during spring. Sapporo’s miso ramen is a greatly loved dish and one must try it while in the city!

TOP TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

The representative tower of Tokyo is modelled on the Eiffel, but is 13 meters taller than its inspiration. It is the world’s tallest self supported steel tower, and has an observation deck offering a bird’s eye view of the city. Patrons can visit the cafe in the tower and enjoy the view along with a cup of tea. At night, the tower lights up and is a sight to behold.

One of Japan’s most revered shrines, Todai-Ji temple is a landmark of Nara, and was the head temple of all Buddhist Temples in the country. The massive main hall of the temple holds one of the largest idols of Buddha in Japan. The temple lies close to the deer park of Nara, and often the deer venture into the temple premises.

The symmetrically shaped active volcano of Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks. Visitors can attempt to climb it in July and August, and there are many other viewpoints for the other months. When visibility is nice, Lake Ashi in Hakone is one of the best places to see Fuji. The Chureito Pagoda in the Five Lakes region is another popular place to marvel at the mountain from.

I still have no words for this incredibly beautiful trip, the great hikes and great moments. I have learned so much about the Japanese culture -then and now- on this trip. Thanks again to my fantastic guide Svenja! Without you, I'm sure this trip would not have been beautiful. I can really recommend this trip to everyone, even if you have been to Japan before, because especially on the hikes through small towns in the countryside, you see completely different corners of this incredibly exciting country.

What are popular layovers on flights from India to Japan?

Once you land in Osaka, you can take public transport to reach Universal Studios in generally just under 50min.

Is there Wi-Fi on board flights from India to Japan?

If you are travelling for work, you can use the internet on board flights. When you arrive in Japan, you may be asked to provide evidence of your return flight or onward travel.

Can I shower upon arrival at airports in Japan?

After a long journey, you might want to freshen up. At Toyko Narita Airport (NRT) there are eight private shower cubicles. These can be found before the Departures area and are available to arriving passengers for free. Osaka Airport (KIX) also has free shower rooms on the 2nd floor of Aeroplaza.

Is food served on flights from India to Japan?

As the journey is long, you will want to ensure food is included in the ticket price. For instance, if you fly with ANA, Air India or Cathay Pacific, a meal is provided during the journey. Whereas, a flight with VietJet Air provides food, but this comes at an additional cost.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Japan flight deals.
  • If you're travelling to Japan for work, it may be convenient to fly to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND). Tokyo Haneda Airport is located roughly a 20min drive or a 40min train ride from Tokyo’s central business and financial districts.
  • Should you want to hire a car upon your arrival at a Japan airport, you should familiarise yourself with the laws of the road before you set off. For example, if you're with kids that are smaller than 140 cm, or younger than 6 years old, they must be in a child seat.
  • If you want to visit Japan’s northern region or enjoy some skiing during your trip, you can fly from Mumbai Airport (BOM) to Sapporo Chitose Airport (CTS) with just a single layover on the route. This will give you easy access to Sapporo city and to the mountainous regions there.
  • If you're flying to Japan during July or August, you should be aware that Matsuri, a well celebrated religious festival, takes place for a whole month. It's likely that ticket prices will be more during this time. So, if you're not travelling for this reason, you might want to visit either side of the celebrations.
  • If you want to explore numerous cities during your visit to Japan, central travel hubs, such as Tokyo Haneda or Tokyo Narita (NRT), offer numerous cheap domestic flights to surrounding cities, including Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya.

Top 5 airlines flying to Japan

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

I cancelled the flights in good time but could only get a partial refund. I was not warned of this.

Crew experience was more transnational, seats were so close together (LtoR and FtoB) that it was difficult to enjoy much of anything. When the person in front leaned back, there is no space for me. Sadly it was a flight to be endured not experienced.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

My seat was sold off to someone else. Had to wait 9 hours to catch the next filght. Definitely will never use Cathay Pacific again. Bad, very bad airline. will comment on google reviews too.

The aircraft was slightly newer but the food was very bad. Bland and uninteresting. Nothing special at all.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Everything was good food could be better but ok for economy on my 2nd flight the head ph jack are bad you have to hold pushed in to hear anything but other then that very nice service

We requested special assistance and Cathay Pacific provided it in Sydney, but we were completely forgotten about in Hong Kong - when we really needed the help to catch our connecting flight. Really disappointing service.

Would have liked working outlets on the flight. The first meal was very bleh, the second meal was a lot better so overall okay meals

In flight entertainment system including wifi were down and passengers got tortured for the 16 hours flight without any of these. Food was spoiled as well for the first meal provided but second meal was Ok. Overall a horrible experience which was not at all expected for such a long haul flight which was expected to be THE most memorable part of my planned trip for family.

The cabin was quite noisy as there were lots of children travelling for the school holidays. Found the selection of movies limited.

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

Orange juice change to mineral water . Should keep the orange juice.

Entertainment system was too old, crew were unorganised during boarding

No recognition for one World Emerald member. Business class seat has flat bed

No recognition for one World Emerald member. I got row 1 in business class and it was pathetic. No leg space, cramped space, less recline

Legs space in the business class cabin is too small and pillow is dirty!

Flight from Shanghai to Kuala Luumpur delay byy 3.5hrs with no real explanation.

Paid for seats near the window but given seats right at the back, near the toilets. This location was so noisy with the blasts from the aircraft engines blowing beside. Not a nice one 😞.

Flight was delayed 2 hours, which seems regular with this airline. Aircrew were avarage, friendly but robotic. At check in I asked for a spare seat. Got some stupid response about loading capacity (it was 85% full!) Then passengers behind jumped up and moved to vacant exit rows, they obviously didn't pay for. Waited over 20+ minutes to disembark, with ground staff trying to squash all passengers onto 1 bus. Causing even more delays. Unsafe and stupid! But this is a problem at Saigon airport. Overall a very average experience!

In experience we didn't even get water unless it was paid for. Even Bamboo Airlines provided free water. The flight was cold with no blanket being provided. The flight attendants were not responsive in keeping the passengers under control. I complained about fellow passengers playing loud music several times before one of the flight attendants to action. I will not recommend flying with Vietjet unless things improve.

I have few bad reviews about VietJet, but my experience was really good and it worth every penny..

Not even free water. NO legroom. Narrow seats. Not enough room to even hold a book at reading distance in front of you.

No food? No movies? No water?? On an international flight, really???

No water or snacks. Crew did not give us arrival cards. There was no need for more than 1 flight attendant as they did not do anything

I got to the airport and flight was cancelled without notice

Some chair in the flight should be maintained, but I think they may not have time to check every seats, since it is high demand in this period.

Our experience was the worst. Over 2 days flight was changed and delayed 4 times. Not impressed

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct. However, the TV's did not work so I'm glad we brought our own entertainment.

Need to update the staff of the airport. They tell luggage weight according to they want.

The Air India lounge in Delhi , was very disappointing! The food was of poor quality and options were limited especially for vegetarians!! Beverages were fine. The in flight crew was excellent! . They helped me with my seat controls - the controls did not work without a hassle or assistance!! A very poor showing for a Business cabin!!! Post flight , the wheel chair passengers ( including Me) were “ shepherded and left waiting twice (an hour or more) before taking us to immigration! I chose to Fly Air India because I want. to patronize our National carrier with the hope that the experience will improve!!! Regrettably, I will have to look at other options for my next trip to India

Mediocre staff, crappy food selections and no entertainment for a 14 hour flight. The only good thing was that it was a direct flight.

Entertainment system was not working and was told I would get a voucher and have not got one. No toiletries were available not even a toothbrush false sweet talk by ground staff

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Very very impressed with the proactive care and alertness with which ABHISHEK Chowdhary took care of us. Quietl, dignified , very alert, and meticulous. Very impressed. Also with SUNiL Kumar who was there for us in a very helpful way. SHERLY ALEX On Flight 119, BOM TO JFK CUSTOMER ON SEAT 21C, 21ST March 2024
