Can't get enough of the lion king.

I can't get enough of the Lion King! This was my third time attending! The story of the the Circle of Life means a lot to me and my family. The first time I saw the performance I was so moved that I went out and got a tattoo of Mufasa (in color) on my left upper arm! It reminds me of the theme and my family every day! Next bucket list item...to see Lion King on Broadway! I had my entire family with me at this performance, and I even teared up in certain scenes! Thanks to everyone involved with the production!

Great show! We had a great time!!

This show could never disappoint us!! We are looking forward to our next opportunity to see it again.

Spectacular performance!

Wonderful show! The singing, acting, costumes, all spectacular!!!

Outstanding !

I had seen it 2 years ago on Broadway and wanted to have my daughter see it here ! It was outstanding and she loved it . She is a choreographer and was mesmerized by everything happening on that stage ! We loved every minute if this production ! So glad we came to see it !

Lion King Orpheum MN

The production and talent for the Lion King were outstanding. I’m not a big Disney fan but my wife and family are and she absolutely loved it. We were 14 rows from the stage however we couldn’t see some of the performance as it was blocked when sitting on the end seats. Well worth seeing if a play or Disney fan.

Lion King doesn't disappoint! I would love to go again!

The play was amazing! The only disappointment was that my tickets were magic pass that included merchandise. This was never explained and hard to figure out how to get the included merch.

Captivating

Amazing and breathtaking. Do not be late as the opening is not to be missed. Great story telling, beautiful singing and dancing. This was my second time seeing this show, 24 years apart, and introduced it to my children (teens). I saw the awe in their eyes and it is unforgettable.

Great evening

This play was one of the best I have ever seen.we had great tickets!

The show was very creative. Fantastic costumes, makeup and talented performers. Audience was the problem with children way to young to even understand or be there for it (literally months old) to the ones that were hollering from the scary parts like Scar and the hyenas. The parts my granddaughter got bored with were the individual singing acts of the young Simba and Nahla along with the talking hyena scenes. Wasn't enough action on stage during those parts to keep her interest and it was hard to hear and understand. She has seen the movie several times so she was familiar with what was going on and overall we enjoyed it. The adult humor that was mixed in was very funny. Thank you for asking.

Love every second of this amazing show. It has been on my bucket list for years and we finally got to see it. Beyond expectations

So many tears.

I’ve seen it twice, both as a teenager/young adult. And I cried beginning to end both times. The music, the costumes, the nostalgia, all of it combines to an amazing show. Hoping they come back to Vancouver so I can see it a third time, this time with my niece and nephew

Great show! However I think the NYC theatre has a lot more capabilities based on youtube videos I saw

Spectacular

The costumes were colourful, and creative. The performances were outstanding, especially young Simba and Scar. It was non-stop entertainment. I wouldn’t hesitate ito recommend it to people of any age.

The Lion King was spectacular!!

This show exceeded my expectations. There was added humour , amazing actors, the costumes were phenomenal - this is a show your whole family will love. #HakunaMattata

Lion King - good

The show was good but you needed to be close to the stage to enjoy. Sound was off. Scar was just ok - difficulty hearing him and seeing any emotions. Circle of Life number was just ok. Could have had more drama but ending drum beat was awesome

everything we'd hoped for and then some!

Lion King lived up to and exceeded our expectations. The costumes and sets were amazing! Great vocals and terrific acting with sprinklings of humour for adults and children alike!

I have seen this show twice! Looking to now bring my 6 year old daughter. When is it coming back to Toronto!!????

Really enjoyed the show, very well played. My daughter wanted to go again :)

Lion King was a blast!

This is my third Lion King, my first Broadway across Canada version of the show and the first ever musical for my little boy. The music, dancing, acting and singing were all fantastic. The sets, lighting and large animals stunning. We all loved it. Only minor wrinkle - at times the sound system was a touch too loud leading to distortion. Be warned - the concession prices for the toys are eye watering! A great outing for the family.

It was exceptional! Mufasa was outstanding! the Signers moved me.. gave me goosebumps.. I cried. The best theater production I've been to. Side note: too long for my 3 year old.

Review: THE LION KING at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

Disney's iconic Broadway sensation, The Lion King, made a triumphant return to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, revisiting the same venue where it held its pre-Broadway run back in 1997. As the third-longest-running show on Broadway and a recipient of numerous Tony Awards, its legacy precedes it.

For those familiar with the animated film, the musical stays true to its beloved storyline while infusing it with rich African American culture. From the moment the curtains rise, the production captivates with its mesmerizing costumes, intricate makeup, and dazzling effects, creating an atmosphere of sheer wonder.

The cast's talent is nothing short of extraordinary. Mukelisiwe Goba 's portrayal of Rafiki commands attention, particularly during the powerful opening of "Circle of Life." Gerald Ramsey 's deep, resonant voice brings authority to the role of Mufasa, and his rendition of "He Lives In You" is simply stunning. Aniya Simone and Julian Villela shine as Young Nala and young Simba, respectively, infusing energy and charm into "I Just Can't Wait to Be King." Peter Hargrave 's portrayal of Scar exudes villainy, showcasing both his vocal prowess and acting prowess. Nick LaMedica 's Zazu adds a delightful touch of humor, while Nick Cordileone and William John Austin bring Timon and Pumbaa to life with infectious chemistry and liveliness. Forest VanDyke , Martina Sykes , and Robbie Swift excel as the hyenas, their camaraderie evident in their performances. Darian Sanders and Khalifa White deliver captivating performances as Simba and Nala, their chemistry shining through in poignant moments such as "Shadowland" and "Endless Nights."

Review: THE LION KING at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

The ensemble numbers are a highlight of the production, with "Circle of Life" leaving a lasting impression with its awe-inspiring animal costumes and puppetry. "One By One" celebrates African culture with vibrant costumes and a palpable sense of pride that resonates throughout the performance. Each member of the ensemble brings their characters to life with dedication and skill, enhancing the overall magic of the show.

The production elements of Disney's The Lion King are nothing short of breathtaking, from the intricate sets to the masterful lighting and special effects. While "Circle of Life" is undeniably a highlight, it's the stampede scene that truly mesmerizes. The way the grass sways, the starry night sky twinkles above, and Mufasa's spirit communicates with Simba creates a sense of pure magic that leaves audiences spellbound.

Review: THE LION KING at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing The Lion King at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis while it's in town. It's an absolute must-see, and you'll find yourself immersed in a world of wonder and awe that you won't soon forget. Don't miss out on this extraordinary theatrical masterpiece!

MINNEAPOLIS — Editor's Note: This photo is from The Lion King's previous tour stop in Minneapolis in 2016.

A popular Broadway show is roaring back in Minneapolis... and it will be here for a whole month.

The Lion King has visited the Orpheum five times in previous years, but with its continuous success on national stages, the tour has made another stop in the Twin Cities. The show runs March 27 - April 28.

The show is known for its intricate costumes, which include detailed puppets that mimic animals like giraffes, zebras and, of course, lions.

And if you're interested in a sensory-friendly performance, the Hennepin Theatre Trust will host that on April 20 at 2 p.m.

Tickets range in price from $39 to $189. Click here to visit the Hennepin Theatre Trust website for more information.

From Minnesota to Broadway: here are some shows that launched in the land of 10,000 lights

W hen the musical version of Prince's "Purple Rain" opens at the State Theatre in Minneapolis next spring, it likely will be the biggest show to premiere in the Twin Cities since "The Lion King," which bowed in 1997. Those two high-wattage shows form tentpoles, but they're not the only Broadway shows to try out or launch national tours in the Twin Cities. Here are seven others.

1992: "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat": After playing at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, the show launched its American tour with a three-month autumn run at the State Theatre. Donny Osmond headlined the musical as Joseph and dancer-choreographer Linda Talcott Lee, who still works in the Twin Cities, played an Apache Dancer.

1995: "Beauty and the Beast": The show launched its national tour in Minneapolis with a cast that included Patrick Page as Lumière. The show was Disney's first encounter with Minnesota.

1995: "Victor/Victoria": Julie Andrews headlined a cast that also included Rachel York and Tony Roberts.

2000: "Dame Edna: The Royal Tour": Australian female impersonator Barry Humphries lit up the State Theatre with her pink wigs and diamond-studded glasses.

2001: "Aida": The Elton John-Time Rice tuner launched its national tour at the Orpheum headlined by Simone, Patrick Cassidy and Kelli Fournier.

2005: "Sweet Charity": Christina Applegate started small in the lead role of Charity Hope Valentine but grew into the role as the run progressed.

2019: "Six": The show gives voice and power to the Tudor queens who were the wives of Henry VIII. The show had a sold-out pre-Broadway run at the Ordway.

Reconnect with your childhood at ‘Disney Princess: The Concert,’ coming to Broward Center

A dream is a wish your heart makes, at least according to Cinderella, and we’re on the same page when it comes to shoes. If your dream also includes a night of music, you’re in luck! There’s a fun concert coming to town this weekend that’s a real royal affair.

They’ve taken us to new heights, and under the sea.

And this weekend, Disney’s iconic princesses and their musical fairy god-fairy are taking over the Broward Center.

Benjamin Rauhala: “It’s sort of a cross between almost a Broadway show and then almost like the Disney Princess Eras Tour.”

Disney Princess: “‘The Concert’ brings the animated characters you know and love to life on stage, with the help of some Broadway divas.

Like SoFlo’s own Syndee Winters.

Syndee Winters: “I played Nala in Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ on Broadway, and I am celebrating Princess Tiana, Princess Merida, Queen Anna and Queen Nala.”

Syndee Winters (singing): “But I’ve climbed the mountain and crossed the river, and I’m almost there.”

Now, the show is not your typical concert experience.

Syndee Winters: “We get to have a 40-foot giant LED screen that plays the animations in the back while we sing some of these songs.”

Syndee Winters, Alyssa Fox, and Hiba Elchikhe (singing): “Let it go, let it go, and I’ll rise like the break of dawn.”

Alyssa Fox and Hiba Elchikhe are also joining the princess party.

Hiba Elchikhe: “I think that everyone can connect to Disney music generationally, right? So I think there’s something in it for everyone.”

Alyssa Fox: “It’s so amazing getting to connect with audiences in different cities, so we’re excited about joining you over there in Florida.”

And the best part is singing along.

Syndee Winters: “To get to be able to sing this music with the audience and, like, put the mic out and let them sing.”

Benjamin Rauhala: “You are all in the show with us. We love to hear you sing.”

And dressing up is encouraged.

Alyssa Fox: “It’s a really incredible thing to know that you can wear a gown and wear sparkles and wear a crown, even.”

Hiba Elchikhe: “Yeah.”

Alyssa Fox: “And still feel like a strong warrior.”

amBroadway | ‘Frozen’ a smash on tour, Paper Mill Playhouse announces new season and more

' src=

The Broadway musical adaptation of “Frozen” was one of the earliest casualties of the pandemic, with Disney announcing early on that the production (which opened in 2018 to mixed reviews) would not reopen following the shutdown. However, since the pandemic, it has been produced internationally and received a national tour.

On a trip to Philadelphia last weekend, I was able to catch the national tour of “Frozen” at the Academy of Music along with my seven-year-old son (who had previously seen “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” on Broadway) and three-year-old daughter (marking her first time attending a two-act musical). Impressively, my son, who has expressed a strong aversion for “Frozen” in recent years, got into it again, going so far as to reread a “Frozen” guidebook he received years earlier the following day.

The national tour faithfully recreates the Broadway production, with direction by Michael Grandage, choreography by Rob Ashford and extensive digital effects to create the transition to a wintry wonderland. While I still have lukewarm feelings about the musical’s stage adaptation, I enjoyed the experience of taking in a first-class, Equity national tour of a recent Broadway hit at a stunning historic theater I had never been to before.

The rights to produce “Frozen” will next be released to regional theaters and amateur groups. I look forward to seeing how it will be reinvented visually.

Ben Platt and ‘Tammy Faye’ will play the Palace

The Palace Theatre on Broadway, which has undergone extensive physical refurbishment and restoration (including raising the venue 30 feet into the air), will reopen with an 18-performance concert residency by Ben Platt (who will perform his own music and introduce his new album) from May 28 through June 15. This will mark Platt’s return to Broadway following his breakout performance in “Dear Evan Hansen” in 2016. Michael Arden (“Parade,” “Once On This Island”) will direct the concert. Famous entertainers who have previously played the Palace include Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Josephine Baker, and Bette Midler.

Following Platt, the next tenant at the Palace will be the Broadway premiere of “Tammy Faye,” Elton John’s new musical about the life of televangelist Tammy Faye Messner, which has lyrics by Jake Shears and book by James Graham. The musical received mixed reviews when it received its world premiere in London. Katie Brayben and Andrew Rannells, who originated the roles of Tammy Faye and her husband Jim Bakker in London, will reprise their performances on Broadway. (The roles were played by Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield in the 2021 film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”)

Paper Mill Playhouse announces new season

The new season at Paper Mill Playhouse a lot like the New Jersey theater’s recent seasons, including a bio-jukebox musical (“Jersey Boys”), a holiday show (“White Christmas”), a Disney show (“The Little Mermaid”), and two new musicals: “Mystic Pizza,” which is based on the 1988 rom-com and has a jukebox score of hits from the ’80s and ’90s; and “Take the Lead,” which is based on a 2006 dance film starring Antonio Banderas that will be directed and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli (“Newsies”). The current Paper Mill season will continue this week with the new musical “Gun & Powder” and will be followed by the Carole King bio-jukebox musical “Beautiful.”

‘Left on Tenth’ will play Broadway with Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher

“Left on Tenth,” a new play by novelist and screenwriter Delia Ephron (“You’ve Got Mail”) based on her romantic comedy-style memoir “Left on Tenth: a Second Chance at Life,” will open on Broadway in the fall with Julianna Margulies as Delia, who will be joined by Peter Gallagher. Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) will direct. In a statement, Ephron described “Left on Tenth” as being about “a perilous and wondrous time of my life.” In 2013, “Lucky Guy,” a play written by her sister, the late Nora Ephron, about journalist Mike McAlary was produced on Broadway with Tom Hanks.

The slate of shows for the upcoming season includes the Neil Diamond bio-musical “A Beautiful Noise” Oct. 1-6, 2024; the return of Disney’s “The Lion King” Nov. 13-Dec. 1, 2024; “MJ the Musical” Dec. 10-15, 2024; a radically rethought revival of “Peter Pan” Feb. 4-9, 2025; “The Wiz” March 11-16, 2025; “Some Like It Hot” April 29-May 4, 2025; and “Back to the Future the Musical” June 4-8, 2025.

The schedule breaks down to two jukebox musicals, two refreshed and reinterpreted 20th-century musical classics and three musical versions of famous movies (one of them from Disney).

The Bushnell continues its tradition of hosting the first national tours of recent Broadway hits. Two of the shows, “MJ” and “Back to the Future,” are still running on Broadway as their first national tours commence. The Broadway production of “Some Like It Hot” closed in December after running for around a year. “The Wiz,” a revival of the 1974 Black version of “The Wizard of Oz,” is touring before it gets to Broadway, playing The Bushnell less than three weeks before it begins preview performances at New York’s Marquis Theatre.

Besides the seven shows in the subscription season, The Bushnell announced return bookings of two musicals that have already played the venue in recent years: “Les Miserables” from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3, 2024, and the concert-style British history lesson “Six” Dec. 31, 2024 through Jan. 5, 2025. Various tours of “Les Mis” have been coming to The Bushnell since 1989, most recently in 2017. When “Six” happens, it will be only two years since the first tour of the show about the six wives of Henry VIII played The Bushnell in January 2023.

Tickets are not yet available. Bushnell Broadway series subscribers are contacted first about renewing their subscriptions. Then, new subscriptions are offered to those not currently subscribing. Finally, months from now, single tickets will go on sale for the shows.

Kyle Ramar Freeman as Lion, Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Phillip Johnson Richardson as Tinman and Avery Wilson as Scarecrow in the revival of "The Wiz" that will head to Broadway right after its pre-Broadway national tour plays The Bushnell in March 2025. (Jeremy Daniel)

Of the seven subscription shows, five are the first national tours of new musicals that have never appeared at The Bushnell. The other two, “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz,” first came to The Bushnell decades ago but in very different forms. This new production of “Peter Pan” has been rewritten by playwright Larissa Fasthorse (Broadway’s “The Thanksgiving Play”), with a particular interest in reworking the original script’s objectionable depictions of Native Americans.

“Some Like It Hot” is based on the 1959 film comedy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe. It’s not the first time the movie has been turned into a musical. A previous attempt, “Sugar,” by Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Peter Stone ran on Broadway in 1972 and (retitled as “Some Like It Hot”) played the Shubert Theatre in New Haven in 2002. This new one has a score by the “Hairspray” and TV “Smash” team of Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman and a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin. López has had several of his plays (including the world premieres of “Somewhere” and “Reverberation”) produced by Hartford Stage, which also commissioned (but did not end up producing) his Tony-winning epic “The Inheritance.”

Ruffin, best known as a writer/performer on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and for her now-defunct “Amber Ruffin Show” on Peacock, also had a hand in the tour of “The Wiz,” adding new material to the show’s book.

It took years, but The Bushnell has finally caught up with the backlog of Broadway series shows whose visits to Hartford were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The last straggler was “The Cher Show,” which was originally scheduled to play The Bushnell in November of 2020 and finally arrived earlier this month. This will likely be the first season since 2021 which has not had to make room for delayed runs of musicals originally planned for previous seasons.

The 2024-25 season begins in the fall. There are still three more Broadway shows coming in the current 2023-24 season: the “Wizard of Oz” prequel “Wicked” April 24 through May 12, “Beetlejuice” May 28 through June 2 and “Funny Girl” June 18-23.

The Shubert in New Haven announced its own 2024-25 Broadway series slate last week with “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Clue,” “Mean Girls” and “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of the Temptations.” All but one of those shows, the non-musical play “Clue,” has already played The Bushnell on earlier tours. Other Connecticut theaters that host Broadway tours, such as the Waterbury Palace, will announce their 2024-25 seasons soon.

About A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical on Broadway

Video & photos.

Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself,  A Beautiful Noise  is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chartbusting, show-stopping American rock icon. The Kremlin

Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.

The house-museum of Maxim Gorky

This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.

Gorgeous buildings and fountains tower on all sides – showcasing the best of Nizhny’s architecture. Quirky shop fronts and lovely local souvenirs will have you pausing at every window while the charming cafés will draw you in with their tempting aromas. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street transforms by night into a vibrant hub of evening activity and is the place to come for a night-out in the city. The bars of this street are favorites with Nizhny Novgorod’s student population.

The Chkalov Staircase

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

The National Centre of Contemporary Art

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.
