About The Package

It goes without saying, but India is an unfathomably diverse country. There are so many cultures, traditions, schools of thought and languages that all share these lands with each other despite the differences. All of these religions have learned to coexist with each other over the course of living side by side for centuries.

Travelling to Uttar Pradesh, there are a couple of townships that holds importance in so many of our cultures, and you can explore them yourself with our Kashi Vishwanath tour package . In the village of Kashi and the monuments of Sarnath, which are located fairly close to one another, the monuments, the people, the rituals that are performed here are all presented in a fascinating confluence of different faiths, all accompanying each other in an incredible showing of tolerance and compassion. It is also known as Benaras to some and Varanasi to others. The one thing that is common and clear across regardless of how someone may refer to it, is the fact that it is truly a place of great reverence among many faiths. All in all, if you are interested in becoming a part of this incredible dance of life, colour and culture for a few days, TravelTriangle’s Kashi Vishwanath temple tour package is meant for you. Here’s a glimpse at some of the place you may get to visit on our itinerary.

In the Pali Canon, a collection of scriptures that forms the belief system and history of the Theravada Buddhist tradition, this village for referred to as “Isipatana”, meaning “a place where holy men landed”. The name Sarnath, however, comes from the Sanskrit language, where the word “Saranganatha” has the meaning of “Lord of the Deer”. This may be due to the tale of one of Gautam Buddha’s previous lives as a Bodhisattva (a person who delays their ascent into enlightenment due to their display of compassion for beings who are still suffering) who was leading deer through a forest. There was a king who lived nearby who wished to hunt his deer, so this Bodhisattva struck a deal with him - that he would only hunt these animals one by one, per the Bodhisattva’s instructions. The king agreed, but then one day, the time came for the king to kill a doe who was to give birth to a fawn. To save this doe’s life he offered his own life to the king. The king, rocked to his core by this act of sacrifice, decide to create a sanctuary for deer in that forest instead. This sanctuary is said to be Sarnath’s famous Deer Park, where deer still live and thrive to this day.

  • Witness the cultural mixture of Sarnath

Other Benefits (On Arrival)

Starting with the stupas of Sarnath

This tour commences with your arrival in the village of Varanasi. After you check into your hotel, drop off your luggage and stretch your legs for a bit to shake off that travel fatigue, we’re off to our first stop on the tour. That stop is the holy lands of Sarnath. One of the most important sites anywhere in India for the people who follow both the Buddhist philosophies as well as Jain philosophies, this place has a number of monuments scattered throughout its expanse that tell the story of why this place has the reverence that it does in these cultures.

The first of these places is the famed Deer Park of Sarnath. Next up on the tour of Sarnath are its magnificent stupas. Stupas, in Buddhist culture, were originally meant to function as tombs, not too dissimilar to how pyramids function in Egyptian culture. Another stupa here that is worthy of note is the Chaukhandi Stupa. Whereas the Dhamek Stupa enshrines the spot where Gautam Buddha taught his disciples for the first time, the Chaukhandi Stupa marks the place where they first met, as Gautam Buddha returned from Bodh Gaya after achieving enlightenment.

Following this, we travel to Sarnath’s main chowk, where a monument named Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is located. After our tour of Sarnath is completed, we make our way back to Varanasi at around 5 pm, just in time to witness the wonderfully choreographed ritual of the Ganga Aarti, performed here at Dasaswamedh Ghat during every sunset. After this tiring yet fulfilling jaunt around these sacred towns, we return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Varanasi - Sightseeing

  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The splendour of Shiva’s sacred shrine

This day is dedicated entirely towards the exploration and study of the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple here in Varanasi. It is one of, if not the most revered temple to Lord Shiva anywhere in the world. On the outside, the temple is absolutely gorgeous, an utter architectural marvel, adorned with gold domes, with a spire shooting up through them. Once you have had the opportunity to explore the temple to your heart’s content, you may return to the hotel and retire to your room for an overnight stay.

Varanasi: Departure

Bid bye Varanasi

The final day of the tour wraps up after we have breakfast. Once the check-out process is complete, we head out from the hotel and begin our departure from Varanasi, with the blessings of these venerated grounds in our hearts and minds.

For 3 days and 2 nights in Varanasi, you can end up shelling out INR 7,499 whereas if you are planning a long trip with added activities, the overall expense will be significantly higher. If you are planning to book a trip to Varanasi to spend some time with your family or friends enjoying a handful of activities that you want to explore together, a 24-hour day trip can take you to all the important landmarks. The number of days will also depend on the kind of activities you are planning to include in your itinerary.

Varanasi Tour Packages

Vibrant, spiritual, and steeped in mysticism, Varanasi offers an experience to satiate the soul.

The city of ghats, known as Varanasi, Banaras, and Kashi, reflects the centuries-old traditions, influences, invasions, and metamorphosis. Not only is Varanasi the oldest city in India but also one of the most ancient in the world. Since it is one of the most important destinations for pilgrims, a Kashi yatra package is a very popular option. Things to Do in Varanasi

Varanasi is brimming with a cultural heritage that transcends beyond Hindu religious aspects.

Here are a few things that you can consider when booking your Varanasi tour package to make the most of your Varanasi trip.

• Ganga River:

The holiest of all rivers, Ganga is truly the lifeline of this majestic city and should definitely be a part of your Kashi tour package. The best way to experience this river is to take a boat and explore how this river has infused life into the city and helped it last for thousands of years. The spectacular ghats with the pandits performing various religious ceremonies celebrating both life and death are a sight to behold. These ghats are also centres of music and learning.

• Panch Koshi Parikrama:

It is a fifty-mile path with a radius of five miles that covers 108 shrines starting at Manikarnika Ghat and also covers the five religious places of Kardmeshwar, Shivpur, Rameshwar, Bhimchandi, and Kapildhara.

• Kashi Vishwanath Temple:

Considered to be one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located in Kashi Vishwanath Galli (street). This temple is mentioned in the Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana. It is the 12th Jyotirlinga in the country and is one of the most famous and popular places to visit for devotees and tourists alike. This temple witnesses about 3,000 visitors daily and the number even goes up to 1 lac on special occasions such as Shiva Ratri. The architecture of the temple is quite magnificent with intricate carvings adorning the walls. The temple complex has a pond known as Jnana Vapi or wisdom well. The complex also houses many smaller temples such as Kaalbhairav, Vishnu, Virupaksh Gauri, Vinayaka, and Avimukteshwara.

• Dashashwamedh Ghat:

Legend has it that this ghat is the place where Lord Brahma performed the Dasa (ten) Ashwa (horse)Medha (intelligence) sacrifice and hence the name. This ghat is the epicentre of many religious rituals and activities. Every evening, the Ganga Aarti is performed, and thousands of locals, tourists, and devotees turn up to witness the spectacular event. The magnificence of the aarti increases manifolds during important occasions such as Dev Deepavali which is celebrated during the Hindu month of Kartik. When booking your Varanasi city tour package, make sure witnessing the Ganga aarti is included in the itinerary.

Not only is Varanasi a hotspot for Hinduism, but it also plays a crucial role in the evolution and spread of Buddhism. Sarnath is adorned by towering stupas and it is where Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon. Sarnath is located about 10 kilometres from the city centre. The Sarnath museum displays the archaeological finds as well as a rich collection of numerous Buddha and Boddhisattva sculptures and artefacts. A kilometre away from Sarnath is the village of Singhpur, where Shreyansanath was born. Shreyansanath is the eleventh Tirthankara of Jainism and that makes Sarnath an important pilgrimage site for Jains as well. The erstwhile King of Banaras gifted Sarnath a deer-park which is in existence even today.

• Sankat Mochan Temple:

This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman and is situated by the River Assi. This temple was built by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in the 1900s. This temple should definitely make it to your Varanasi Tour Package.

• Banaras Hindu University:

Varanasi has for long been an important centre of learning and the Banaras Hindu University is a glowing testimony of the same. This university is internationally reputed and was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in the year 1916. It has contributed immensely to the nation's progress by producing many scholars in various fields.

The campus spreads over 1300 acres and boasts of lush greenery, beautiful buildings that house 124 departments and 6 centres of advanced studies, playgrounds, and even an airstrip. It is home to about 15000 students from all over India as well as a large number of foreign students.

• Jantar Mantar:

Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur was a great patron of the arts and sciences. He built the Jantar Mantar, which is an astronomical observatory, in 1737. The Jantar Mantar at Varanasi is built like the ones in Jaipur, Mathura, Delhi, and Ujjain. A lot of attention to details has gone into the building of this observatory, with each structure designed to perform a particular function. The main purpose of the Jantar Mantar is to measure the local time, the Sun's declination, as well as monitor other planetary movements. The instruments used for the many astronomical purposes are so accurate that they can be used even today.

• Shopping in Banaras:

No Varanasi tour package is complete without shopping for Banarasi handicrafts and sarees. This colourful city has been at the centre of Indian civilization and thus offers an evolved opportunity to discover its many offerings. The Banarasi saree has been a quintessential part of every bridal trousseau since times immemorial. Intricate gold and silver brocade work done on fine Banarasi silks make for a treasure that is passed from generation to generation. Apart from the rich silks, this city is also known for its brassware, copperware, carpets, religious souvenirs, and unique toys. The best places to shop for these are Vishwanath Gali, Thatheri Bazaar, Chowk, and Golghar. Ensure you have some free time included in your Varanasi holiday package to look around these old markets and shop to your heart’s content.

Best Time to Visit Varanasi

Varanasi is an institution in itself with visitors, pilgrims, and tourists wanting to experience the magic all year round. However, a Varanasi package is best booked during the winters (November to February) when the temperatures are mild. The pleasant weather helps you enjoy your Varanasi city tour package in the best possible way!

History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The history of Kashi Vishwanath Temple is as old and rich as the history of Varanasi itself, which is also known as Kashi, the city of light. According to legend, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati chose Kashi as their abode after their marriage, and the temple was built by them to house the Jyotirlinga, the radiant pillar of light that represents Lord Shiva's supreme power. The temple is also mentioned in the ancient scriptures, such as the Vedas, the Puranas, and the epics, as the most sacred and auspicious place for the worship of Lord Shiva.

The temple has witnessed several phases of construction and destruction over the centuries, as it was attacked and demolished by various invaders and rulers, and rebuilt and restored by different kings and devotees. The current structure of the temple dates back to 1780, when it was rebuilt by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, after the previous temple was destroyed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669. The temple was also patronized by other rulers and dynasties, such as the Marathas, the Peshwas, the Scindias, and the Birlas, who contributed to its renovation and expansion. The temple also received donations of gold and silver from various sources, such as Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab, who donated gold for the plating of the domes and towers in 1839.

The temple has also been visited by many famous saints and devotees, who have sung praises and composed hymns in honor of Lord Shiva and Kashi. Some of the notable names are Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhvacharya, Kabir, Tulsidas, Guru Nanak, Swami Vivekananda, and Mahatma Gandhi. The temple is also associated with many legends and miracles, such as the appearance of Lord Shiva in the form of a linga, the protection of the temple by the Jnana Vapi well, and the granting of boons and blessings to those who seek Lord Shiva's grace.

Architecture of Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The architecture of Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, reflecting the history and culture of Varanasi. The temple covers an area of about 5 acres, and has three distinct parts: the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), the Mandapa (assembly hall), and the Sabha Griha (congregation hall). The temple has two main entrances: one from the Vishwanath Gali, the narrow lane that leads to the temple, and the other from the Manikarnika Ghat , the cremation ground on the river bank. The temple also has an exit gate, called the Kaal Bhairav Darwaza , which opens to the Jnana Vapi well.

The Garbhagriha is the innermost part of the temple, where the main deity, Lord Shiva, is enshrined in the form of a linga. The linga is made of black stone, and is about 60 cm tall and 90 cm in circumference. The linga is placed on a silver platform, and is covered with a silver canopy. The linga is also adorned with various ornaments, such as flowers, garlands, and jewels. The Garbhagriha is surrounded by a silver fence, and has four doors, each guarded by a Nandi (bull), the vehicle of Lord Shiva. The devotees can enter the Garbhagriha from the south door, and touch the linga as a part of the Sparsh Darshan (touching the deity). However, they have to follow a strict dress code, and wear only unstitched clothes, such as a dhoti or a sari.

The Mandapa is the middle part of the temple, where the devotees can sit and watch the rituals and ceremonies performed at the Garbhagriha. The Mandapa has a dome-shaped roof, supported by eight pillars, each decorated with intricate carvings and paintings. The Mandapa also has a silver throne, where the idol of Lord Shiva is placed during the festivals and special occasions. The Mandapa also has a small shrine of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god and the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The Sabha Griha is the outermost part of the temple, where the devotees can gather and chant the name of Lord Shiva. The Sabha Griha has a flat roof, supported by 40 pillars, each adorned with floral motifs and sculptures. The Sabha Griha also has a small shrine of Lord Hanuman, the monkey-god and the devotee of Lord Rama.

The temple also has several other features and attractions, such as the gold-plated domes and towers, the Jnana Vapi well, and the other temples within the complex. The domes and towers of the temple are covered with gold, which gives the temple its name, the Golden Temple. The gold plating was done by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab, who donated about 1 ton of gold for the purpose. The domes and towers are also embellished with various symbols and images, such as the trident, the crescent moon, and the snake, which represent Lord Shiva's attributes.

The Jnana Vapi well is a sacred well, located near the temple, which is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva himself. According to legend, when the temple was attacked by Aurangzeb in 1669, the priests hid the linga in the well, and placed a replica in the Garbhagriha. The well is also said to contain the knowledge and wisdom of Lord Shiva, and hence the name, Jnana Vapi, which means the well of knowledge. The well is also surrounded by a mosque, built by Aurangzeb, which is known as the Gyanvapi Mosque.
