A child is born. We see underwater swimmers representing this. He is young, in a jungle setting, with two fanciful "instincts" guiding him as swooping bird-like acrobats initially menace, then delight. As an adolescent, he enters a desert, where a man spins a large cube of metal tubing. He leaves his instinct-guides behind, and enters a garden where two statues dance in a pond. As he watches their sensual acrobatics of love, he becomes a man. He is offered wealth (represented by a golden hat) by a devil figure. In a richly decorated room, a scruffy troupe of a dozen acrobats and a little girl reawaken the old man's youthful nature and love.

In an exciting addition, Cirque du Soleil proudly announces its collaboration with Sam Williams, a contemporary country artist, grandson of country pioneer Hank Williams and the son of outlaw legend Hank Jr, for the creation of an original song for the show Songblazers , fusing gut-wrenching honesty and plainspoken poetics with raw vulnerability and deep empathy, CARNIVAL HEART, is inspired by a personal yearning of self-discovery, friendship, and hope. Williams wrote the spellbinding new song with fellow songwriters PJ Harding and Ned Houston.

“The title idea came to me pretty easily after becoming acquainted with Cirque du Soleil ,” says Williams. “Where I come from, most people don’t get to go to the circus. We go to county fairs and carnivals, and the carnival in a small town is filled with joy, excitement, mystery, euphoria, you name it. That feeling is one you always remember, and I think the roller coaster of emotions lines up with what you want to feel seeing such an incredibly beautiful production such as Cirque’s.”

Grandson of country pioneer Hank Williams and the son of outlaw legend Hank Jr., Sam Williams is the latest in a long line of American originals, who sings with his own singular voice and writes in his own singular style, fusing gut-wrenching honesty and plainspoken poetics with raw vulnerability and deep empathy. Cirque du Soleil brings country show to San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The world-famous Cirque du Soleil is returning to San Antonio with its new country music show, “Songblazers.”

“Songblazers – A Journey into Country Music” will have eight performances at the Majestic Theatre from Aug. 21-25.

Tickets are on sale now for Club Cirque members. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Thursday.

Cirque du Soleil teamed with Universal Music Group Nashville to produce the country-themed show. It was written and directed by Amy Tinkham.

“Drawing inspiration from the rich legacy of country music, Songblazers pays homage to the legendary trailblazers of the past while embracing the vibrant talents of contemporary artists,” a news release states. “... As the crowd grooves to beloved country tunes, they will be entranced by the breathtaking skills of Cirque du Soleil artists, honoring the rich tradition of country music while embracing its evolving spirit.”

This marks Cirque du Soleil’s 11th visit to San Antonio and its first show at the Majestic Theatre.

“Songblazers” will also be in Sugar Land from Aug. 1-11, Austin from Aug. 14-18, and Dallas from Sept. 25-Oct. 20.

CT serves up a double dose of Cirque du Soleil fantasies with a ‘Bazzar’ and the return of ‘Corteo’

Cirque du Soleil , hard hit by the COVID years, has been able to stage a return that’s as miraculous and fantastic as its own spectacular performances.

Connecticut welcomes two different Cirque du Soleil shows this month. One is the arena tour of “Corteo,” which played Hartford in December 2022 and is now at Bridgeport’s Total Mortgage Arena April 11-14. The other is “Bazzar,” a new show which is being set up in its own “big top” tent on Market Street in Hartford from April 6 to May 5.

Review: Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Corteo’ brings a baroque splendor that is just spectacular to the XL Center

Whether in a tent or an arena, Cirque du Soleil shows are distinguished by their exquisite design, theatrical artistry and often dark or mysterious themes. One show, “Ovo,” had a theme of eggs, birth and nature. “Luzia” felt tropical and mystical. “Corteo” explores mortality, and “Bazzar” is vaguely about social order and community. They are also all lively, vibrant, colorful circus entertainments, with routines that range from high wire walking and aerial stunts to cycles, acrobatics and juggling.

Cirque du Soleil’s “tent shows” are always special, since the company can control every element of the environment themselves from the creative lighting and special effects to the elegant refreshment and merchandise areas. The last tent show to play Hartford was the water-themed “Luzia” in 2019. “Bazzar” has never played Connecticut before.

Johnny Kim, the artistic director of “Bazzar,” said the show had an unusual development process. “Bazzar” began as a special new form of Cirque du Soleil show, scaled down somewhat so it could travel to areas of the world that had been unable to accommodate shows in the past, including Africa and India. When COVID happened, a lot of projects had to be postponed, canceled or greatly changed. Instead of being a scaled-down Cirque du Soleil show, “Bazzar” got scaled up again to the dimensions of other U.S. and European tours.

Kim said that unlike a lot of Cirque du Soleil shows, “Bazzar” has a cast of individual characters whom you warm up to during the show, rather than faceless entities who are constantly changing costumes and becoming other people.

While a lot of Cirque du Soleil shows, including “Corteo,” stretch the definition of what a theater-based circus can be, “Bazzar” has the feel of a traditional circus, including a ringmaster type called “Maestro.” While many Cirque du Soleil shows don’t use actual languages, opting for made-up lingo that’s universal in its expressions, “Bazzar” has some dialogue in English.

The show is described on the Cirque du Soleil website as “an eclectic lab of endless invention” in which the performers work to impress the “Maestro.”

“Corteo” may not be one of the intimate Cirque du Soleil tent shows, but it’s one of the most beautiful, elaborate and extraordinary arena shows the company has ever produced. A Courant review of the Hartford appearance called the show “an elaborate, enchanting dreamscape” in which the characters appeared to be in a “moving, fluid Renaissance painting.”

One big change since “Corteo” last played Connecticut is Stephane Gentilini, who has taken over the show’s starring role of Mauro, a bedridden man who is witnessing his own fantasmagorical funeral. “I joined the company five weeks ago,” Gentilini said, though he’s been preparing for the role since September. “It’s a great challenge as an actor, with many different emotions.”

In a Cirque du Soleil show, the spectacle is not just emotional but physical. Mauro flies, does acrobatics and juggles.

“I trained for both acting and circus,” Gentilini said. “The character is written out, and I try to play the lines, but I adapt it a bit for me.”

Though this is his first Cirque du Soleil show, he’s worked with “Corteo” creator/director Daniele Finzi Pasta many times on shows for other companies.

“We have similar ideas,” Gentilini said. “Even if it is about a funeral, it’s a celebration. It’s really optimistic of Mauro to be thinking about his own funeral. There are memories everywhere. He is remembering the love of his life. It is a pleasure to play this show. It’s a contemporary show but it is also a homage. It is the old circus but a new way of doing it.”

It goes without saying that both “Corteo” and “Bazzar” are filled with amazing aerial and acrobatic routines performed by top circus talent from around the world. Cirque du Soleil shows can also feature anything from contortionists to clowns to realistic human depictions of jungle animals. There’s always some juggling and some gravity-defying balancing acts. The other guaranteed elements are superior theatrical design elements and dazzling special effects. The music is often original, moody and an ideal accompaniment to the physical artistry.

Cirque du Soleil, whether in a tent or an arena, is just the thing to pull Connecticut out of the winter doldrums and into the still-forming spring season.

Cirque du Soleil’s “Bazzar” runs April 6 through May 5 under a big top on Market Street in Hartford. Performances are Wednesdays through Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3 and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 1 and 4:30 p.m., with added matinees at noon on April 20 and 27.  $53-$170. cirquedusoleil.com .
