ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

Here's a rundown of the tour guide company, ToursByLocals, including what they do, what their features are, and if it's worth the money. Read on to find out more!

join tours by locals

When you’re planning a trip to a new city or country, you want to make sure you get the most out of your visit by finding the best things to do, places to stay, and restaurants to eat at.

If that's the case, then read all about them in our travel blog collection here. Here at  Pilot , we’re all about helping you plan your trip and make the best of your time abroad.

However, if you're not the type that wants to plan out every detail of your trip, why not get a tour guide instead? We know that for many people, a great way to get to know a city is to take part in an organized travel tour, whether that’s as part of a large group or in a more private and personalized setting. Whether it's joining a tour on a yacht or hopping on a Busabout , tour guides comes in many shapes or forms!

There are many ways to find local guides to a city or town, and  ToursByLocals  is one of them. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Read our comprehensive guide to find out!

What Is ToursByLocals?

ToursByLocals is an easy-to-use website that provides you, the traveler, with access to local tourist guides in cities all over the world. It currently operates in 193 countries and has more than 4,500 guides that you can connect with, in locations ranging from Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and Bern to places a little further afield, like Tokyo, Iceland, and even the South Island of New Zealand.

Tourbylocals logo

The tour guides are all local people that just so happen to have expert knowledge of the ins and outs of their hometown. Taking a tour from a local is one of the best ways to learn more about historical events that took place in a certain city, explore specific neighborhoods, or just find out about the best things to do while you’re traveling.

As well as personal tours of cities, ToursByLocals offers  shore excursions , allowing you to get a local’s perspective of any of the stops on your cruise.

At the moment, you can even book virtual tours with ToursByLocals if you’re craving a travel fix but can’t get away right now—perfect for armchair tourism during the pandemic! If you book and attend a live virtual tour, which will still be run by local people, you’ll also receive the money you’ve spent as a voucher that you can spend on an in-person tour when you’re next free to travel. Score!

Is ToursByLocals an Accredited Tour Company?

Now, you might be wondering why ToursByLocals doesn’t come up if you’re searching for top-rated tour companies in Europe, or if you’ve been googling the best US travel and tour options. There’s a pretty simple explanation for this: ToursByLocals isn’t actually a tour company.

Instead, it acts as a marketplace that gives you access to individual guides who run their own tours. All tours listed on the website are private tours, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can message guides to see if they can customize a tour to better suit your needs.

What Is a Personal Tour?

One of the main benefits of using ToursByLocals is that you’ll be receiving a personal tour rather than a group tour. We’ve all seen group tours on our travels: Hordes of people following a slightly tired-looking guide who’s carrying some kind of brightly colored umbrella or flag, speaking in hushed tones into a microphone and not stopping to answer any questions along the way. Sounds great!

A personal tour is not like this. Instead, it’s one that you and your travel buddies (whether that’s your family, your partner, or your friends) book privately with a guide. The benefits of a personal tour are numerous:

  • You can customize the tour based on your own interests
  • You’re free to ask as many questions as you like without feeling like you’re bogarting the guide!
  • You can book it for a time and date that suits you, making it easier to fit in with your other travel plans
  • You could gain access to certain tourist spots that may be closed to large groups
  • You avoid having to interact with  that one person— you know the type—who thinks they know more than the guide!

Instead of booking onto a tour that’s targeted at large groups, which can be impersonal and pretty rigid in structure, a personal tour allows you more freedom. It gives you the chance to get to know a city however you   want, making it easier to find your way around and uncover the coolest parts of town.

How Do I Find a Private Tour Guide?

Using ToursByLocals to find a private tour guide is easy. Sign up or log in to your account, then search by location. Add the dates you want to go on a tour, then browse the options and book whichever one interests you most.

Choosing a location on a map for travel Toursbylocals

You can also contact the tour guide before booking to arrange customization if you’re looking for something more personal to your interests.

Once you’ve got everything organized, just pay ahead of time and attend your tour. It couldn’t be simpler.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Sometimes when you’re traveling, things go wrong. Maybe your cruise ship has illness on board and has been told it can’t dock, meaning your planned shore excursion is a no-go. Maybe you’ve had to cancel your whole trip because of a family issue. Or maybe you’ve just changed your mind! Can you still get your money back?

The ToursByLocals cancelation policy is pretty fair. If you cancel 15 days or more before the tour was due to start, you can get all your money back. Nice. You’ll also get a refund if certain unforeseeable events take place—this includes the ship being told it can’t dock.

If you’re booking ahead of time but aren’t completely sure whether you’re definitely going to attend the tour, the website also offers a more flexible (but more expensive) cancelation policy, known as the “Any Reason” policy. If you’ve paid extra for this, you can cancel for any reason at all, as long as you do so before the tour starts.

How Do I Become a Local Tour Guide?

If you want to  become a tour guide  for ToursByLocals, you can  apply  through the ToursByLocals website. You have to be legally permitted to give tours in your area (but this doesn’t mean you have to be a licensed tour guide—“passionate locals” are also encouraged to apply).

If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to take part in an interview process to make sure you’re suitable for giving tours, and to check your English skills. You’ll also have to undergo a background check.

If you pass all the stages of the application process, you can start selling your tours on ToursByLocals.

Do Tour Guides Make Good Money?

Tour guides that offer their services through ToursByLocals can charge as much as they think is appropriate for their tours. The company takes a percentage of every dollar earned, but you can factor this into your pricing when you set up your profile and tour offerings.

Tour guides making money

Remember to make sure you’re getting paid a fair amount, but you’ll also want to ensure your prices aren’t so expensive that they’re off-putting to potential customers!

Is ToursByLocals Worth It?

It’s easy enough to find and book private tours with ToursByLocals, but is it really worth it? The costs of private tours can be high, and with guides setting their own prices, you could end up paying huge amounts for a private tour.

It all depends on what you’re looking for from your vacation. Some people prefer group tours, as they give them the chance to meet new people and get a basic overview of a city or a particular sight. For others, it makes more sense to book a private tour because it’s easier to get a personalized or customizable experience. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

I'd recommend looking at different options and reading up on specific reviews of that individual tour operator before making the purchase!

My Rating: 4.1/5

  • Curated tours

How to Engage More With Locals on Your Next Trip

Travel is as much about the people we meet as the places we go, but making those on-the-ground connections can be challenging. these sites are here to help..

How to Engage More With Locals on Your Next Trip

Some of the best memories we collect as travelers are of the strangers we meet along the way: the proud taxi driver who shuts off the meter and takes you to his favorite hole-in-the-wall eatery; the innkeeper who calls a friend of a friend’s cousin to take you on a breathless hike through a private tea plantation; the gentleman one barstool over who turns out to be a theater director with an extra ticket for that night’s sold-out show. But not every transformative experience comes from a chance encounter; some can be booked in advance. Think of these websites as the wingmen of the travel world, connecting curious travelers with residents eager to share their deeply local knowledge.

League of Kitchens

Lisa Gross, founder of League of Kitchens , believes food is a great way to counter toxic rhetoric around immigration and support meaningful cross-cultural exchange. She recruits female immigrants, many of them 50 or older, to lead immersive cooking lessons and food tours in the neighborhoods where they live and shop. The service is currently limited to New York City and Los Angeles , but LOK’s 15 instructors hail from around the world: Afghanistan, Argentina, Greece , Nepal, Mexico , Iran, and beyond. Each woman has a deep knowledge of her native culture’s food traditions, but they are not professional chefs. Jeanette, for instance, moved from Zahle, Lebanon , to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, in 2006. When you sign up for one of her 2.5-hour or 4.5-hour culinary workshops, you’ll hang out in her home kitchen and hear her personal backstory while learning to make mujaddara (lentil and rice porridge topped with sweet fried onions) and bake maamoul (semolina shortbread cookies stuffed with nuts). In the Manhattan kitchen of Aiko, an immigrant from Kagawa, Japan , you’ll be schooled in the principles of mottainai , or waste avoidance, while making kinpira- burdock root simmered in soy sauce, mirin (rice wine), and homemade dashi (fish broth). Up to six guests can join a cooking class, and each participant leaves with a detailed shopping guide and a packet of family recipes.

League of Kitchens is an organization where female immigrants lead immersive cooking lessons and food tours in the neighborhoods where they live.

“From as early as I can remember, I’ve craved outdoor adventure. I surf, snowboard, skydive, climb high mountains, ride motorcycles, and love camping and bushcraft,” says Pedro McCardell, a former advertising executive. “I love exploring new places, and I’m always in search of the spots that only the locals know about.” When McCardell realized he couldn’t find a digital platform to help him, he launched his own. Lyfx , pronounced life-X (short for “life experience”), connects adventurous travelers such as McCardell with local outdoors enthusiasts. The site is still getting its footing but already has 350 adventures listed, some “tough” and others “chill.” Activities are concentrated in Colorado , Utah, and California for now, but McCardell is also eyeing markets in Maine , Georgia, New York, the Dolomites , and Chile . He aims to have as many as 1,000 experiences listed by summer. (How does trekking through the Atacama Desert with seven-summits mountaineer Ernesto Olivares sound?) Lyfx adventures are searchable by region and include camping, hiking, running, cycling, landscape photography, kayaking, surfing, skiing, snowboarding, sailing, and more. Guides are required to obtain the necessary permits and certifications for each experience.

Tours By Locals

A mind-boggling number of services claim to connect travelers with in-the-know locals and tour guides, but one of the oldest and easiest to use is still one of the best. Founded in Vancouver in 2008, Tours By Locals maintains a smaller inventory than its younger, hotter competitors, yet every person featured is someone you probably want to know. (Theyʼre people like Rodolpho Emanuel in Manaus, Brazil, who was born and raised in the Amazon rain forest and can offer insight and access to unique indigenous sites.) Each profile tells you the guide’s location, languages spoken and level of fluency, background, and tourism credentials. Travelers can search by special interest (adventure, after dark, food and wine, religious heritage, shopping, etc.), activity level (minimal to extreme), wheelchair accessibility, and kid-friendliness, and read detailed reviews of other travelers’ experiences. When you find something of interest, book a spot on a pre-arranged tour or start a conversation with the guide. The ability to directly message the guides makes Tours By Locals stand out from the pack, because you can shape your own itinerary and better determine if your personalities meld before committing to an outing. With more than 3,400 guides in 156 countries, there’s bound to be a match.

Here are some good reasons why.

FOCUS ON  SUSTAINABILITY

We plant trees.

For every 100 customers on our Barcelona Walking Tours, in collaboration with Environomica , we adopt a tree to fight deforestation and compensate our emissions. We also adopt a tree for every Private Tour booked. Check our progress in our Eco-Project page.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

SMALL GROUP PHILOSOPHY

Our groups are always reduced in order to protect the daily rhythm and the privacy of the locals. This also allows us to offer  better quality  and  a more personal and friendly approach  during our tours.

SOCIAL COMMITMENT

As Be Local Tours, in 2018 we cooperated in a unique and special Social Project to support the local community by teaching a group of  young girls and boys  how to become tourist guides , in collaboration with Casals de Infants .

“Gaudi & Modernism Tour”

I had so much fun on this tour! The guides are experienced and funny guys 🙂

“Great Tour!”

Had a lovely tour today with Carlos, very informative and chilled out.

“Fantastic and insightful walking tour”

Riccardo pointed out a lot of things that the average visitor would never have paid attention to.

“Half Day Walking Tour”

We had the most interesting and informative tour of the new and old part of the city. [..]. We only had a short visit to Barcelona and we really felt like we had seen so much – we all highly recommend Carlos and this company.

“Unbelievable”

Wow, I can not speak highly enough of our guide on the Spanish civil war tour, his knowledge was incredible.

Our Clients are our best sponsors.

Amazing Gaudí tour in Barcelona! The best walking tour to date! Patrick was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. The way he talks is super engaging and you wouldn’t even realize when the 2 hours would end. He would make you visualise the whole history behind the place with his wonderful imagery and voice modulations and keep you super interested. Highly recommend!

Excellent walking tour!

We joined the free  Gaudi Walking Tour with Patrick and it was amazing! He explained the history behind many buildings in Barcelona, and even though we aren’t exactly fans of art, he explained the ideas behind the architecture in an incredible way that made us think, wonder and notice details and themes we wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Patrick  was fascinating, funny, charismatic and we’ll spoken. By far the best guide we’ve had yet. If you get a chance to join a tour, go with  Patrick , he’s well worth your while 🙂 Thanks  Patrick !!

The Walking Tour is a Must!

I’m usually a bit of a critic with free tours… normally Id say I expected a bit more of history / commentaries from my guide, but this was so not the case.  Patrick  was an AMAZING GUIDE! Soooooo full of knowledge about history, and although he’s not an artist or an architect, he explained everything with so much passion it almost seemed like he was. Hightly reccomend this tour, otherwise you might go through Barcelona without understanding what’s just in front of your nose.

Bonus points for  Patrick’s  british accent and sense of humor!

Thank You Patrick!

We had a great tour with  Patrick . This tour begins at 11:00 am, unlike most of the other free  Gaudi tours. It lasted 2 and a half hours which flew by as was compact with in-depth reviews of many buildings. P atrick   was very engaging and  knowledgeable about the area and was able to keep all different ages in our group entertained 🙂 would 100% recommend to others

Truly impressive!

Patrick was an absolutely fantastic guide, his passion for and deep understanding of Barcelonas history and architecture made for a wonderful tour. Extremely informative, by far the best tour I can remember going on. Would greatly recommend!

An excellent way to spend a morning! We had an excellent tour of the Barcelona Architecture with Patrick. The tour was intimate (only 6 people) and by the end I felt I had come to personally know him. Patrick knew the history down to the last detail, and while this may seem like a daunting task to comprehend, the storytelling methods employed made me feel like I had been there to experience it myself. I highly recommend this tour if you want a great understanding of not only the architectures of Barcelona, but the personal stories behind them as well!

"Jorge was a great guide with a very good understanding of the history of Tallin. He was good humored and made us feel relaxed. Would definitely recommend Jorge. "

guest Alan

Tallin walking tour with Paul

"The private walking tour was great and I would definitely recommend! Paul had a lot of historical and cultural information to share and showed us all the main sights of Tallin. We had only a few hours in Tallin and this tour helped us maximise our time there - we learnt and saw a lot in a short period of time. Paul was also really flexible. He met us at the ferry terminal and started the tour at a different point (which would normally not be a part of the tour). He also stayed with us for a longer period of time in order to show us all the main sights of the city. All in all a really nice experience which I would definitely recommend. If you read this Paul -Thanks again! "

guest Adaugo

Paul made it special!

"We really didn't know much about Talinn or Estonia and therefore didn't have any expectations. We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and history of this city, expertly delivered by Paul. We thoroughly enjoyed the food we tried!! My only suggestion is too communicate the meeting point in detail. We waited in an area that was wrong for several minutes. "

When you hit the road and land in a new city like Tallinn, there's an exciting way to dive into its soul: personalized local tours. Forget the typical touristy routes – these tours are like having a local friend show you around all the cool spots.

Imagine having someone who lives and breathes Tallinn spill its secrets. That's what local guides bring to the table. They know the hidden alleys, the best bites, and stories that never made it to the guidebooks. Whether you're into munching through food tours, wandering the city's streets, or going off the beaten path, a local guide hooks you up with a private tour that's authentically Tallinn.

The best part? These tours are all about you. No herding in big groups or rushing through places you're not interested in. With private tours, you're the boss. Whether it's snapping pics at iconic landmarks, diving into history, or checking out the art scene, the tour is tuned to your vibes at your tempo.

But it doesn't stop at city limits. Day trips let you escape the urban jungle and explore nearby wonders. And if you're just setting foot in Tallinn, kickstart tours give you a taste of everything. Think of it as a crash course in Tallinn awesomeness, guided by a local who knows the city like the back of their hand.

So, next time you're in Tallinn, ditch the ordinary. Grab a local tour and unlock the city's real magic – the stories, flavors, and places that make it uniquely Tallinn. Get ready to explore like a local!

Taylor Blatchford

Walking around Seattle, you’ve likely encountered someone with untreated psychosis. We’re not alone in this — many U.S. cities are facing an ongoing crisis as people with severe mental illness cycle between the streets, hospitals and jails.

Why is it like this?

In the  “Lost Patients” podcast , reporters from The Seattle Times and KUOW have examined Washington state’s mazelike system for treating serious mental illness and past decisions that led to this outcome. You can catch up on the podcast on all major podcast platforms, and new episodes of the six-part series are released on Tuesdays.

On Thursday, May 9, we invite you to join The Seattle Times and KUOW for a discussion on the mental illness crisis.

‘On the Clock’ tour brings NFL draft excitement to young fans in Pontiac

Visit detroit is going beyond what’s at the draft by providing opportunities with these events.

Mara MacDonald , Reporter

PONTIAC, Mich. – Before the NFL draft rolls into town, organizers took the game on the road to give young fans around the city a chance to become football stars.

Despite their small stature, the young ones who flocked to the NFL draft “On the Clock Tour” at Pontiac High School lived out their football dreams in a unique setting.

“I’m pretty fast,” said 7-year-old Oryan Gibson. “I think I’ll be a quarterback or wide receiver.”

Gibson got to run drills just like a professional football player.

Visit Detroit, and the draft is taking the NFL event on the road.

“We bring the NFL Draft to the neighborhoods,” Visit Detroit’s Harriet Carter said. “So many people feel they’re not a part of these events, and we want them to know they are.”

Visit Detroit is going beyond what’s at the draft by providing opportunities with these events, including mentorship and sports opportunities at no cost.

For example,  Sheriffpal.com  was on site, letting parents know about the abundance of program options, especially with summer break approaching.

An entire footprint for the draft is being built around Campus Martius right now. Families will have many opportunities for activities for little ones during the draft weekend, which have no cost.

Be aware that if you have plans in and around Campus Martius over the next three to four weeks, there will be a lot of construction, which also means limited parking and road closures.
