Gorumara and Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara & Gorumara Wildlife Tour

Not many know that there is a lot more to West Bengal than the rich culture, lip-smacking food and magnificent temples. This eastern state of India is blessed with plenty of exotic wildlife. Our wildlife tour to Jaldapara and Gorumara national parks comprises of 5 nights and 6 days itinerary that offers you a great chance to see several animals and birdlife species. These include the one horned rhinos, elephants, gaur, spotted deers, Pallas's fishing eagle, jungle fowl, peafowl and partridges. The tour's specially designed itinerary lets you watch the best of West Bengal wildlife from close quarters.

Upon arrival at NJP (New Jalpaiguri) railway station / Bagdogra airport meet with our representative and drive to Gorumara National Park. Established in 1992 as a national park Gorumara is situated in Jalpaiguri district of west Bengal. Upon arrival check into the wildlife resort. Evening free at leisure. Overnight stay at resort.

Today we will explore the Gorumara National park by a 02 hrs Jeep safari. We will awake a little early and after morning tea it is time to enter the national park first time. Gorumara National Park is mainly famous for the one horned Rhino, apart from Rhino a number of spotted Deers, Bison's, Elephants and Gaurs can be spotted during your wildlife jeep safari.

Later return to the resort for breakfast. After lunch we will again enter to the national park for wildlife viewing, this time we will spent our quite time at Jatraprasad Watch Tower. The watch towers are very popular in Gorumara and offer an excellent view of the forest, these watch tower are very significance for viewing wildlife from very close proximity. To spend some time at the watch tower is a very good idea. The popular watch tower of the national park is Jatraprasad watch tower; which is a tribute to the pet Elephant of forest department (Kunki).

Later return to the resort for overnight stay.

Today we will enjoy our safari in the forest of Gorumara to get a chance to move very close the wildlife animals. After one hrs long safari we will return to the resort for fresh-n-up and breakfast.

Enjoy the day at leisure up to the lunch time or one can go for visit to Rhino observation tower, located near the forest bungalow. The salt reservoir just below the Rhino observation point is an ideal a perfect place to see wildlife as these wildlife frequently visit the reservoir for water.

After lunch we will again visit the national park, this time we will enjoy a nature trekking to the national park.

Later return to the wildlife resort for wildlife viewing.

Gorumara - Jaldapara National Park (90 km)

After breakfast we will leave for our second wildlife destination Jaldapara National Park. On the way to Jaldapara we will visit the South Khayerbari animal rescue center. The animal rescue center at Khayerbari is home to Tigers, Leopards which was brought from various circus troupes and zoos. One can enjoy a leopard safari in this center.

Further we will continue drive to Jaldapara national Park, situated within the foothills of Himalayas. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1991, for the protection of the one-horned rhino. The park is flung by river Torsa and river Malangi. The sanctuary is mostly covered with tall grasses and comprises rich vegetation and a variety of wildlife. Upon arrival in Jaldapara check into the wildlife resort. After fresh-n-up we will explore the nearby tribal villages within the vicinity of the national park and will also enjoy a nature trail.

This morning we will awake a little early and will move for a jungle safari in Jaldapara national park for wildlife viewing. Later return to the resort for breakfast.

After breakfast enjoy the atmosphere and the glimpse of nature around the wildlife resort.

After lunch we will again visit the National Park. This time we will enjoy our jeep safari to the national park to explore its exquisite beauty of the vast grassland. The national park is famous for the one one-horned rhinoceros and holds the highest rhino population in India after Kaziranga National Park. The other fauna found in Jaldapara are tigers, elephants, deers, sambar, wild pig and bison and a number of avifauna are also found in Jaldapara which make it a paradise for bird watchers, the avifauna are the Bengal Florican, crested eagle, Pallas's fishing eagle, jungle fowl, peafowl, partridges, and lesser pied hornbill etc.

Morning after breakfast we leave for Bagdogra / NJP to connect with onward destination.

Jaldapara Tour Package

The most exciting part of the National Park is its increased population of the rhinoceros. In fact, it has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The one-of-a-kind trees, shrubs and herbs found in the park, and the Torsa river flowing through the wildlife sanctuary are other prime attractions for tourists here. Places To Visit

Around 20 km away from jaldapara lies Chilapata, a dense, lush green forest that is home to an ancient fort. Yo can see the fort built by Nal King standing in the periphery which highlights the merits of Gupta Age. You must take some time out to go on a wildlife safari of the Chilapata forests. You may spot some leopards and elephants gallivanting about as you cruise through the dusty paths of the woods.

Jaldapara was also known by this name once upon a time. Today, Totopara is a small village located a slight distance away from the Jaldapara National Park. Bordered by Bhutan to the North, this village is a picturesque and quiet getaway. If you want a secluded vacation and enjoy some private time with friends or family, do not forget to visit Totopara.

A small stretch of land used now as a leopard rescue centre, the Khairbari is a fantastic sightseeing opportunity for all tourists who frequents the Jaldapara National Park. Gorumara National Park

Wildlife preserve since the 1800s, the Gorumara National park is another natural delight just 80 kilometres from the Jaldapara National park. It is famous for bison, peacocks, Asiatic one-horned rhinos and Asian Elephants.

GajolDoba and Apalchand Forest

The Gajodolba and Apalchand Forest is a scenic reservoir built by the Teesta river Barrage. The Baikunthpur forests surround it. You can take a short trip here when you want a healthy dose of nature.

Welcome to ‘Jaldapara Tour’ . On arrival at the Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri railway station (own cost), you will be transferred to Madarihat. Enroute enjoy the natural beauty of Dooars.

Day 02: Jungle safari at national park

The approximate Elephant Safari Cost in Jaldapara is around Rs 1000/- Per Head.

In case of medical emergency Mal Sub Division Hospital , Mainyaguri Hospital , Chalsa Hospital near Lataguri and Madarihat Rural Hospital near Jaldapara is the best option. Few pvt nursing homes are also available in both sectors. Otherwise one can reach North Bengal Medical College Hospital , Siliguri in case of serious health issue.

Jaldapara Elephant Safari is operated by WBFDC . They provide trained elephant and expert keeper as well as guide. Ticket must be booked one day prior to the elephant safari. Ticket will be available from ticket counter in front of Jungle main gate beside Jaldapara Tourist Lodge . One needs to stand in queue 2 hrs prior to the opening of ticket counter due to rush during season. Document needed while booking is Voter Card, Passport Copy or Photocopy of Driving License. Note: The resident guests in Hollong Tourist Lodge and Jaldapara Tourists Lodge get the preferential treatment to obtain Jaldapara Elephant Safari Ticket . If you Book Dooars Package from NatureWings , there chance for Confirmed Booking of Hollong Tourist Lodge along with a confirmed Elephant Safari Ticket.

Q. Is Elephant Safari / Jeep Safari in Dooars is allowed with 3 years old Child?

Me and my wife went to Dooars in the 2nd week of February 2020 and this our first experience of a jungle safari. We were confused about the Dooars Tour Plan . My family and I visited Jaldapara during winter last year with Naturewings. We stayed at the Hollong Eco village resort. It was a beautiful resort very close to the forest. I recently went to Dooars Trip, right before the lockdown. Our entire trip was planned and organized by Naturewings. Finally three friends family decided to explore forest in last winter and close to Kolkata, Dooars was the best forest destination. Based on inputs from one of our friend, who already visited Dooars suggested NatureWings as they are the best for the Dooars Tour Package . Our Dooars Tour started from New Mal Jn (NMZ) Railway Station and as per the plan, our car was waiting just outside the station. We then proceed to Lataguri and in the afternoon we took the Lataguri Jungle Safari by Jeep, where we spotted Wild Bison, Wild Elephants and few peacocks. Next day, we took the whole day excursion to Jhalong, Bindu, Paren, Rocky Isalnd, Samsing and SultaniKhola. Next Day we went to Jayanti forest inside Buxa Tiger Reserve. Jayanti homestays are very nice just in front of Jayanti River. Next day morning we took the Chilapata Jeep Safari , the jeep entered into very deep jungle, where no sun light reaches and after completing Jeep Safari Completes, we proceed to the Jaladapara Forest, where NatureWings arranged a nice resort, Hallong Eco Resort. From the resort back gate, we entered into the forest for an afternoon walk. The best part of Dooars Tour was the Elephant Safari in Jaldapara and we took at 5 am slot. It was an amazing experience as Elephant entered into the Jeep jungle and we could see a most coveted Indian One Horn Rhino from stone throwing distance. Description, transfer to lataguri & jungle safari at gorumara.

You will be received and greeted by our official at New Malbazaar Junction, NJP or Bagdogra Airport. Then proceed to Lataguri which takes about two and half hours to reach from NJP or Bagdogra Airport. The village is adjacent to Gorumara National park known for its rich tropical forest, multitudinous hill streams and complete serenity of nature. Have lunch on the way or after reaching you pre-booked resort. After having some rest, get ready for a fascinating Jungle Safari at Gorumara. Witness Bison, Barking Deer, Rhinoceros and various other wild animals while enjoying Safari through the lush green forest of Gorumara. However, it is worth mentioning that the Jungle Safari is subjected to the availability of the ticket and everyone has to personally stand in the queue carrying original government-issued photo identity card for obtaining the tickets. Get back to the resort again and take rest. In the evening witness a magnificent sunset and enjoy the hypnotizing sound of cicada. Finally, after being served a delicious dinner, overnight stay at Lataguri.

Sightseeing at Jhallong, Bindu, Samsing, Suntalekhola

1. As per the instruction by Forest Department of Government of West Bengal, tickets for  Jeep safari & Elephant Safari in Jaldapara National Park to be collected by guest himself from forest office as first come first     serve basis.

2. Permit for Jeep Safari in Jaldapara  National Park  is being issued by In-Charge , Nature Interpretation Center , Madarihat from 5am to 7am for Morning shift & 1pm to 3pm for Evening shift.

3. Permit for Elephant Safari in Jaldapara  National Park  is being issued by In-Charge , Nature Interpretation Center , Madarihat from 6 pm to 8 pm for next day Morning shift only.

4. Forest recommended Gypsy [maximum 06 passengers] & forest Guide is mandatory to enter inside forest for Watch Tower Visit & Jungle Safari.

5. Camera Charges to be paid directly during collection of entry permit as per category of camera.

6. Photo copy of Photo ID proof [ Voter Card/Pan Card/ Driving Licence/passport ] of any one of the guest along with original to be produce during collection of permit.

Salkumar Forest village is the southern entry gate of Jaldapara National Park . Unlike Madarihat – the other entry gate, Salkumar is less congested and is located in the fringes of the forest within natural surroundings. Moreover, jeep safaris and elephant safaris in Jaldapara National Park are also available from Salkumar and the rush for booking these safaris are much less compared to Madarihaat.

Spread over 216 sq. kilometers on the banks of Torsa River, Jaldapara National Park is home to the second largest population of Indian One Horned Rhinos (after Kaziranga National Park in Assam). It also supports a healthy population of Indian elephants, leopards, Indian bisons (Gaurs), deers, wild hogs and 99 taxa of birds belonging to 43 families including peacocks, eagles, hornbills, kingfishers and some rare species like Bengal Floricans, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Lesser Adjutant and Pheasnat. A healthy snake population of King Cobras, pythons, kraits and numerous fresh water turtles can also be spotted in Jaldapara National Park. The guesthouse in the village of Salkumar overlooking the Jaldapara National Park is equipped with all modern amenities and is one of the most convenient spots to stay if you are eager to enjoy the elephant and jeep safaris in Jaladapara. The guesthouse arranges the permits for these safaris too.

Things to do at Salkumar, Jaldapara

Salkumar is “the place to be” if you are longing to enjoy the elephant safaris and jeep safaris in Jaldapara National Park. The Forest Department arranges for these safaris in early mornings and afternoons. Permits are available from the Salkumar Gate only and the guesthouse authorities assist in arranging the permits too.

Things to see around Shalkumar, Jaldapara

Apart from visiting the watchtowers within the Jaldapara National Park and enjoying the safaris, guests can also visit the nearby Khayerbari Leopard Rehabilitation Center , the surrounding tea Gardens, villages and the recently-popularised Natunpara River side view point . Another popular spot located near is the elephant corridor and ruins of Nal King’s Fort in Chilapata Forest.

How to reach Salkumar, Jaldapara

The nearest railhead to Sal kumar is Falakata Railway Station. However, tourists can also reach this village from Hasimara and New Alipurduar. Pick-up services from Shalkumar can also be arranged from these stations. Shalkumar is around 20 kms. from National Highway 31, so guests visiting from other areas of Dooars can reach Sal kumar by car quite easily. The nearest airport to Shalkumar is Bagdogra (IXB).

You can visit Salkumar anytime of the year but Jaldapara National Park stays closed from mid-June to mid-September every year.
